Spin relaxation was studied in a two-dimensional electron gas confined in a wide GaAs quantum well. Recently, the control of the spin relaxation anisotropy by diffusive motion was first shown in D. Iizasa et al., arXiv:2006.08253 (2020). Here, we demonstrate electrical control by drift transport in a system with two-subbands occupied. The combined effect of in-plane and gate voltages was investigated using time-resolved Kerr rotation. The measured relaxation time present strong anisotropy with respect to the transport direction. For an in-plane accelerating electric field along $\left[110\right]$, the lifetime was strongly suppressed irrespective of the applied gate voltage. Remarkably, for transport along $\left[1\bar{1}0\right]$, the data shows spin lifetime that was gate-dependent and longer than in the $\left[110\right]$ direction regardless of the in-plane voltage. In agreement, independent results of anisotropic spin precession frequencies are also presented. Nevertheless, the long spin lifetime, strong anisotropy and drift response seen in the data are beyond the existing models for spin drift and diffusion.
Owing to its array of unique properties, graphene is a promising material for a wide variety of applications. Being two-dimensional, the properties of graphene are also easily tuned via proximity to other materials. In this work, we investigate the possibility of inducing electrical and optical anisotropy in graphene by interfacing it with other anisotropic carbon systems, including nanoporous graphene and arrays of graphene nanoribbons. We find that such materials do indeed induce such anisotropy in graphene, while also preserving the unique properties offered by graphene's Dirac band structu…
We report the experimental observation of strong electrical magneto-chiral anistropy (eMChA) in trigonal tellurium (t-Te) crystals. We introduce the tensorial character of the effect and determine several tensor elements and we propose a novel intrinsic bandstructure-based mechanism for eMChA which gives a reasonable description of the principal results.
Nonreciprocal charge transport, which is frequently termed as electrical magnetochiral anisotropy (EMCA) in chiral conductors, touches the most important elements of modern condensed matter physics. Here, we have investigated the EMCA in Pt/PtMnGa (PMG) bilayers with the assitance of nonequilibrium fluctuation theorems. Large EMCA in the Pt/PMG bilayers can be attributed to nonreciprocal response of an interface-driven chiral transport channel. Due to the presence of large charge fluctuations for small current region, higher order EMCA coefficients should be added and they are all functions of…
Two-dimensional (2D) metal-diboride ZrB2 monolayers was predicted theoretically as a stable new electronic material [A. Lopez-Bezanilla, Phys. Rev. Mater., 2018, 2, 011002 (R)]. Here, we investigate its electronic transport properties along the zigzag (z-ZrB2) and armchair (a-ZrB2) directions, using the density functional theory and non-equilibrium Green's function methods. Under low biases, the 2D ZrB2 shows a similar electrical transport along zigzag and armchair directions as electric current propagates mostly via the metallic Zr-Zr bonds. However, it shows an electrical anistropy under hig…
It is of considerable technological importance to achieve an electrical control of magnetism of sufficient magnitude. To overcome the in-plane shape anisotropy, needed is the electrical control of a perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA). It is known, within a free electron model, the Rashba spin-orbit coupling provides such a control. Surprisingly, this same Rashba PMA is enhanced by two to three orders of magnitude when a periodic potential is added. Usually spin Berry phase physics reflects time dependent magnetic fields. Here it is shown, within a time independent model, such physics aris…
Yttrium iron garnet (YIG) is a magnetic insulator with record-low damping, allowing spin-wave transport over macroscopic distances. Doping YIG with gallium ions greatly reduces the demagnetizing field and introduces a perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, which leads to an isotropic spin-wave dispersion that facilitates spin-wave optics and spin-wave steering. Here, we characterize the dispersion of a gallium-doped YIG (Ga:YIG) thin film using electrical spectroscopy. We determine the magnetic anisotropy parameters from the ferromagnetic resonance frequency and use propagating spin wave spectrosc…
Observation of Optical and Electrical In-plane Anisotropy in High-mobility Few-layer ZrTe5
Hybrid straintronics and voltage-controlled-magnetic-anisotropy: Precessional switching of a perpendicular anisotropy magneto-tunneling junction without a magnetic field
Spin transport via magnon diffusion in magnetic insulators is important for a broad range of spin-based phenomena and devices. However, the absence of the magnon equivalent of an electric force is a bottleneck. In this work, we demonstrate the controlled generation of magnon drift currents in yttrium iron garnet/platinum heterostructures. By performing electrical injection and detection of incoherent magnons, we find magnon drift currents that stem from the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We can further control the magnon drift by the orientation of the magnetic field. The drift…
Spin-transfer torques (STT), Gilbert damping (GD), and effective spin renormalization (ESR) are investigated microscopically in a 2D Rashba ferromagnet with spin-independent Gaussian white-noise disorder. Rashba spin-orbit coupling induced anisotropy of these phenomena is thoroughly analysed. For the case of two partly filled spin subbands, a remarkable relation between the anisotropic STT, GD, and ESR is established. In the absence of magnetic field and other torques on magnetization, this relation corresponds to a current-induced motion of a magnetic texture with the classical drift velocity…
The coexistence of Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions (SOIs) in semiconductor quantum wells leads to an anisotropic effective field coupled to carriers' spins. We demonstrate a gate-controlled anisotropy in Aharonov-Casher (AC) spin interferometry experiments with InGaAs mesoscopic rings by using an in-plane magnetic field as a probe. Supported by a perturbation-theory approach, we find that the Rashba SOI strength controls the AC resistance anisotropy via spin dynamic and geometric phases and establish ways to manipulate them by employing electric and magnetic tunings. Moreover, a…
In a very recent experimental work [Gao et al., 2018 Adv. Mater. 30, 1707055], a graphene-like CuSe monolayer was realized. Motivated by this success, we performed first-principles calculations to investigate its electronic transport and photoelectronic properties. We find that the CuSe ML shows a strong electrical anisotropy, and its current-voltage (I-V) curves along the zigzag and armchair directions are noticeably different. The CuSe ML also displays a useful negative differential resistance (NDR) effect along the both directions when the bias is beyond 1.0 V. Moreover, it has a large phot…
Excitons in semiconductors, bound pairs of excited electrons and holes, can form the basis for new classes of quantum optoelectronic devices. A van der Waals heterostructure built from atomically thin semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) enables the formation of excitons from electrons and holes in distinct layers, producing interlayer excitons with large binding energy and a long lifetime. Employing heterostructures of monolayer TMDs, we realize optical and electrical generation of long-lived neutral and charged interlayer excitons. We demonstrate the transport of neutral in…
Electrically injected and detected nonlocal magnon transport has emerged as a versatile method for transporting spin as well as probing the spin excitations in a magnetic insulator. We examine the role of drift currents in this phenomenon as a method for controlling the magnon propagation length. Formulating a phenomenological description, we identify the essential requirements for existence of magnon drift. Guided by this insight, we examine magnetic field gradient, asymmetric contribution to dispersion, and temperature gradient as three representative mechanisms underlying a finite magnon dr…
Electrical control of spin transport is promising for achieving new device functionalities. Here we calculate the propagation of spin currents in a graphene-based spin-current demultiplexer under the effect of drift currents. We show that, using spin- and charge-transport parameters already obtained in experiments, the spin currents can be guided in a controlled way. In particular, spin-current selectivities up to 102 can be achieved for measurements over a distance of 10μm under a moderate drift current density of 20μA/μm, meaning that the spin current in the arm that is off is only 1% of the…
The skyrmions generated by frustration in centrosymmetric structures host extra internal degrees of freedom: vorticity and helicity, resulting in distinctive properties and potential functionality, which are not shared by the skyrmions stemming from the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in noncentrosymmetric structures. The present work indicates that the magnetism-driven electric polarization carried by skyrmions provides a direct handle for tuning helicity. Especially for the in-plane magnetized skyrmions, the helicity can be continuously rotated and exactly picked by applying an external el…
