We give two asymptotic results for the empirical distance covariance on separable metric spaces without any iid assumption on the samples. In particular, we show the almost sure convergence of the empirical distance covariance for any measure with finite first moments, provided that the samples form a strictly stationary and ergodic process. We further give a result concerning the asymptotic distribution of the empirical distance covariance under the assumption of absolute regularity of the samples and extend these results to certain types of pseudometric spaces. In the process, we derive a general theorem concerning the asymptotic distribution of degenerate V-statistics of order 2 under a strong mixing condition.
We propose an independence test for random variables valued into metric spaces by using a test statistic obtained from appropriately centering and rescaling the squared Hilbert-Schmidt norm of the usual empirical estimator of normalized cross-covariance operator. We then get asymptotic normality of this statistic under independence hypothesis, so leading to a new test for independence of functional random variables. A simulation study that allows to compare the proposed test to existing ones is provided.
Multivariate processes with long-range dependence properties can be encountered in many fields of application. Two fundamental characteristics in such frameworks are long-range dependence parameters and correlations between component time series. We consider multivariate long-range dependent linear processes, not necessarily Gaussian. We show that the covariances between the wavelet coefficients in this setting are asymptotically Gaussian. We also study the asymptotic distributions of the estimators of the long-range dependence parameter and the long-run covariance by a wavelet-based Whittle p…

The eigendecomposition of a matrix is the central procedure in probabilistic models based on matrix factorization, for instance principal component analysis and topic models. Quantifying the uncertainty of such a decomposition based on a finite sample estimate is essential to reasoning under uncertainty when employing such models. This paper tackles the challenge of computing confidence bounds on the individual entries of eigenvectors of a covariance matrix of fixed dimension. Moreover, we derive a method to bound the entries of the inverse covariance matrix, the so-called precision matrix. Th…
Kronecker product covariance structure provides an efficient way to modeling the inter-correlations of matrix-variate data. In this paper, we propose testing statistics for Kronecker product covariance matrix based on linear spectral statistics of renormalized sample covariance matrices. Central limit theorem is proved for the linear spectral statistics with explicit formulas for mean and covariance functions, which fills the gap in the literature. We then theoretically justify that the proposed testing statistics have well-controlled sizes and strong powers. To facilitate practical usefulness…
We establish that the limiting spectral distribution of a block-rescaled empirical covariance matrix is an arcsine law when the ratio between the dimension and the underlying sample size converges to 1 and when the samples corresponding to each block are independent. We further propose a conjecture for the cases where the latter ratio converges to a constant in the unit interval.
The goal of this paper is to establish relative perturbation bounds, tailored for empirical covariance operators. Our main results are expansions for empirical eigenvalues and spectral projectors, leading to concentration inequalities and limit theorems. One of the key ingredients is a specific separation measure for population eigenvalues, which we call the relative rank, giving rise to a sharp invariance principle in terms of limit theorems, concentration inequalities and inconsistency results. Our framework is very general, requiring only $p > 4$ moments and allows for a huge variety of dep…
Given $n,m\in \mathbb{N}$, we study two classes of large random matrices of the form $$ \mathcal{L}_n =\sum_{α=1}^mξ_α\mathbf{y}_α\mathbf{y}_α^T\quad\text{and}\quad \mathcal{A}_n =\sum_{α=1}^mξ_α(\mathbf{y}_α\mathbf{x}_α^T+\mathbf{x}_α\mathbf{y}_α^T), $$ where for every $n$, $(ξ_α)_α\subset \mathbb{R}$ are iid random variables independent of $(\mathbf{x}_α,\mathbf{y}_α)_α$, and $(\mathbf{x}_α)_α$, $(\mathbf{y}_α)_α\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ are two (not necessarily independent) sets of independent random vectors having different covariance matrices and generating well concentrated bilinear forms. W…
We study sample covariance matrices arising from rectangular random matrices with i.i.d. columns. It was previously known that the resolvent of these matrices admits a deterministic equivalent when the spectral parameter stays bounded away from the real axis. We extend this work by proving quantitative bounds involving both the dimensions and the spectral parameter, in particular allowing it to get closer to the real positive semi-line. As applications, we obtain a new bound for the convergence in Kolmogorov distance of the empirical spectral distributions of these general models. We also appl…
