For a pure SU(2) Yang-Mills theory in 4D we revisit the spatial (3D), ball-like region of radius $r_0$, in its bulk subject to the pressureless, deconfining phase at $T_0=1.32\,T_c$ where $T_c$ denotes the critical temperature for the onset of the deconfining-preconfining phase transition. Such a region possesses of a finite energy density and represents the self-intersection of a figure-eight shaped center-vortex loop if a BPS monopole of core radius $\sim \frac{r_0}{52.4}$, isolated from its antimonopole by repulsion externally invoked through a transient shift of (anti)caloron holonomy (pair creation), is trapped therein. The entire soliton (vortex line plus region of self-intersection of mass $m_0$ containing the monopole) can be considered an excitation of the pressureless and energyless ground state of the confining phase. Correcting an earlier estimate of $r_0$, we show that the vortex-loop self-intersection region associates with the {\sl central part} of a(n) (anti)caloron and that this region carries one unit of electric U(1) charge via the (electric-magnetic dually interpreted) charge of the monopole. The monopole core quantum vibrates at a thermodynamically determined frequency $ω_0$ and is unresolved. For a deconfining-phase plasma oscillation about the zero-pressure background at $T=T_0$ we compute the lowest frequency $Ω_0$ within a {\sl neutral} and homogeneous spatial ball (no trapped monopole) in dependence of its radius $R_0$. For $R_0=r_0$ a comparison of $Ω_0$ with $ω_0$ reveals that the neutral plasma oscillates much slower than the same plasma driven by the oscillation of a monopole core.
We study excitations of LLM geometries. These geometries arise from the backreaction of a condensate of giant gravitons. Excitations of the condensed branes are open strings, which give rise to an emergent Yang-Mills theory at low energy. We study the dynamics of the planar limit of these emergent gauge theories, accumulating evidence that they are planar ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills. There are three observations supporting this conclusion: (i) we argue for an isomorphism between the planar Hilbert space of the original ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills and the planar Hilbert space of the emergen…
In this article, subleading (in $1/N$) corrections to the action of the one loop dilatation operator in the su(3) sector of $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory are studied. We focus on the system of operators dual to two giant graviton systems, which have a bare dimension $\sim\mathcal{O}(N)$ and are a linear combination of restricted Schur polynomials with $p=2$ long columns. At the leading order the dilatation operator gives rise to the free part of an emergent Yang-Mills theory, arising from the open string excitations of the giant gravitons. We verify that the terms we study describe i…
Four-dimensional supersymmetric SU(N) Yang-Mills theory on a sphere has highly charged baryon-like states built from anti-symmetric combinations of the adjoint scalars. We show that these states, which are equivalently described as holes in a free fermi sea of a reduced matrix model, are D-branes. Their excitations are stringlike and effectively realize Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions in various directions. The low energy brane dynamics should realize an emergent gauge theory that is local on a new space. We show that the Gauss' Law associated to this emergent gauge symmetry appears …
We study the spectrum of anomalous dimensions of operators dual to giant graviton branes. The operators considered belong to the su$(2|3)$ sector of ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory, have a bare dimension $\sim N$ and are a linear combination of restricted Schur polynomials with $p\sim O(1)$ long rows or columns. In the same way that the operator mixing problem in the planar limit can be mapped to an integrable spin chain, we find that our problem maps to particles hopping on a lattice. The detailed form of the model is in precise agreement with the expected world volume dynamics of $p$ gi…
We demonstrate five-dimensional anti-de Sitter black hole emerges as dual geometry holographic to weakly interacting N=4 superconformal Yang-Mills theory. We first note that an ideal probe of the dual geometry is the Yang-Mills instanton, probing point by point in spacetime. We then study instanton moduli space at finite temperature by adopting Hitchin's proposal that geometry of the moduli space is definable by Fisher-Rao "information geometry". In Yang-Mills theory, the information metric is measured by a novel class of gauge-invariant, nonlocal operators in the instanton sector. We show tha…
We consider a U(2) Yang-Mills theory on M x S_F^2 where M is a Riemannian manifold and S_F^2 is the fuzzy sphere. Using essentially the representation theory of SU(2) we determine the most general SU(2)-equivariant gauge field on M x S_F^2. This allows us to reduce the Yang-Mills theory on M x S_F^2 down to an abelian Higgs-type model over M. Depending on the enforcement (or non-enforcement) of a "constraint" term, the latter may (or may not) lead to the standard critically-coupled abelian Higgs model in the commutative limit, S_F^2 -> S^2. For M = R^2, we find that the abelian Higgs-type mode…
We study BPS states in a marginal deformation of super Yang-Mills on R x S^3 using a quantum mechanical system of q-commuting matrices. We focus mainly on the case where the parameter q is a root of unity, so that the AdS dual of the field theory can be associated to an orbifold of AdS_5x S^5. We show that in the large N limit, BPS states are described by density distributions of eigenvalues and we assign to these distributions a geometrical spacetime interpretation. We go beyond BPS configurations by turning on perturbative non-q-commuting excitations. Considering states in an appropriate BMN…
The framework of emergent gravity arising from Yang-Mills matrix models is developed further, for general noncommutative branes embedded in R^D. The effective metric on the brane turns out to have a universal form reminiscent of the open string metric, depending on the dynamical Poisson structure and the embedding metric in R^D. A covariant form of the tree-level equations of motion is derived, and the Newtonian limit is discussed. This points to the necessity of branes in higher dimensions. The quantization is discussed qualitatively, which singles out the IKKT model as a prime candidate for …
We give an introductory account of the AdS/CFT correspondence in the 1/2-BPS sector of ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory.Six of the dimensions of the string theory are emergent in the Yang-Mills theory. In this article we suggest how these dimensions and local physics in these dimensions emerge. The discussion is aimed at non-experts.
We consider the maximal super-Yang-Mills theory in 5 Euclidean dimensions with SO(5) R-symmetry and 16 supersymmetries. We argue that the strong coupling limit of this theory (with a possible UV completion) has an emergent time dimension and gives a description of the 5+1 dimensional Lorentz invariant (2,0) theory of the M5-brane, compactified on a timelike circle with radius R=g^2/4π^2 . Our discussion involves issues of quantization of Euclidean theories without time.
We consider a U(4) Yang-Mills theory on M x S_F^2 x S_F^2 where M is an arbitrary Riemannian manifold and S_F^2 x S_F^2 is the product of two fuzzy spheres spontaneously generated from a SU(\cal {N}) Yang-Mills theory on M which is suitably coupled to six scalars in the adjoint of SU({\cal N}). We determine the SU(2) x SU(2)-equivariant U(4) gauge fields and perform the dimensional reduction of the theory over S_F^2 x S_F^2. The emergent model is a U(1)^4 gauge theory coupled to four complex and eight real scalar fields. We study this theory on R_2 and find that, in certain limits, it admits v…
Gauge symmetries remove unphysical states and guarantee that field theories are free from the pathologies associated with these states. In this work we find a set of general conditions that guarantee the removal of unphysical states in field theories describing interacting vector fields. These conditions are obtained through the extension of a mechanism for the emergence of gauge symmetries proposed in a previous article [C. Barceló et al. JHEP 10 (2016) 084] in order to account for non-Abelian gauge symmetries, and are the following: low-energy Lorentz invariance, emergence of massless vector…
We study fermions coupled to Yang-Mills matrix models from the point of view of emergent gravity. The matrix model Dirac operator provides an appropriate coupling for fermions to the effective gravitational metric for general branes with nontrivial embedding, albeit with a non-standard spin connection. This generalizes previous results for 4-dimensional matrix models. Integrating out the fermions in a nontrivial geometrical background induces indeed the Einstein-Hilbert action of the effective metric, as well as additional terms which couple the Poisson tensor to the Riemann tensor, and a dila…
We study the coupling of fermions to Yang-Mills matrix models in the framework of emergent noncommutative gravity. It is shown that the matrix model action provides an appropriate coupling for fermions to gravity, albeit with a non-standard spin-connection. Integrating out the fermions in a nontrivial geometrical background induces indeed the Einstein-Hilbert action for on-shell geometries plus a dilaton-like term. This result explains UV/IR mixing as a gravity effect. It also illuminates why UV/IR mixing remains even in supersymmetric models, except in the N=4 case.
Matrix models of Yang-Mills type induce an effective gravity theory on 4-dimensional branes, which are considered as models for dynamical space-time. We review recent progress in the understanding of this emergent gravity. The metric is not fundamental but arises effectively in the semi-classical limit, along with nonabelian gauge fields. This leads to a mechanism for protecting certain geometries from corrections due to the vacuum energy.
We consider the Hermitian-Yang-Mills (HYM) equations for gauge potentials on a complex vector bundle E over an almost complex manifold X^6 which is the twistor space of an oriented Riemannian manifold M^4. Each solution of the HYM equations on such X^6 defines a pseudo-holomorphic structure on the bundle E. It is shown that the pull-back to X^6 of any anti-self-dual gauge field on M^4 is a solution of the HYM equations on X^6. This correspondence allows us to introduce new twistor actions for bosonic and supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories. As examples of X^6 we consider homogeneous nearly Kaeh…
Combinatorial quantum gravity is governed by a discrete Einstein-Hilbert action formulated on an ensemble of random graphs. There is strong evidence for a second-order quantum phase transition separating a random phase at strong coupling from an ordered, geometric phase at weak coupling. Here we derive the picture of space-time that emerges in the geometric phase, given such a continuous phase transition. In the geometric phase, ground-state graphs are discretizations of Riemannian, negative-curvature Cartan-Hadamard manifolds. On such manifolds, diffusion is ballistic. Asymptotically, diffusi…
We elaborate the description of the semi-classical gravity sector of Yang-Mills matrix models on a covariant quantum FLRW background. The basic geometric structure is a frame, which arises from the Poisson structure on an underlying $S^2$ bundle over space-time. The equations of motion for the associated Weitzenböck torsion obtained in arXiv:2002.02742 are rewritten in the form of Yang-Mills-type equations for the frame. An effective action is found which reproduces these equations of motion, which contains an Einstein-Hilbert term coupled to a dilaton, an axion and a Maxwell-type term for the…
The phenomena of emergent fuzzy geometry and noncommutative gauge theory from Yang-Mills matrix models is briefly reviewed. In particular, the eigenvalues distributions of Yang-Mills matrix models in lower dimensions in the commuting (matrix or Yang-Mills) phase of these models are discussed.
Fermions coupled to Yang-Mills matrix models are studied from the point of view of emergent gravity. We show that the simple matrix model action provides an appropriate coupling for fermions to gravity, albeit with a non-standard spin connection. Integrating out the fermions in a nontrivial geometrical background induces indeed the Einstein-Hilbert action and a dilaton-like term, at least for on-shell geometries. This explains and precisely reproduces the UV/IR mixing for fermions in noncommutative gauge theory, extending recent results for scalar fields. It also explains why some UV/IR mixing…
We consider orientifold field theories (i.e. SU(N) Yang--Mills theories with fermions in the two-index symmetric or antisymmetric representations) on R3xS1 where the compact dimension can be either temporal or spatial. These theories are planar equivalent to supersymmetric Yang--Mills. The latter has Z_N center symmetry. The famous Polyakov criterion establishing confinement-deconfinement phase transition as that from Z_N symmetric to Z_N broken phase applies. At the Lagrangian level the orientifold theories have at most a Z_2 center. We discuss how the full Z_N center symmetry dynamically eme…
The present manuscript discusses a remarkable phenomenon concerning non-linear and non-integrable field theories in $(3+1)$-dimensions, living at finite density and possessing non-trivial topological charges and non-Abelian internal symmetries (both local and global). With suitable types of ansätze, one can construct infinite-dimensional families of analytic solutions with non-vanishing topological charges (representing the Baryonic number) labelled by both two integers numbers and by free scalar fields in $(1+1)$-dimensions. These exact configurations represent $(3+1)$-dimensional topological…
We map noncommutative (NC) U(1) gauge theory on R^d_C X R^{2n}_{NC} to U(N -> \infty) Yang-Mills theory on R^d_C, where R^d_C is a d-dimensional commutative spacetime while R^{2n}_{NC} is a 2n-dimensional NC space. The resulting U(N) Yang-Mills theory on R^d_C is equivalent to that obtained by the dimensional reduction of (d+2n)-dimensional U(N) Yang-Mills theory onto R^d_C. We show that the gauge-Higgs system (A_μ,Φ^a) in the U(N -> \infty) Yang-Mills theory on R^d_C leads to an emergent geometry in the (d+2n)-dimensional spacetime whose metric was determined by Ward a long time ago. In parti…
We consider a U(2) Yang-Mills theory on M x S_F^2 where M is an arbitrary noncommutative manifold and S_F^2 is a fuzzy sphere spontaneously generated from a noncommutative U(N) Yang-Mills theory on M, coupled to a triplet of scalars in the adjoint of U(N). Employing the SU(2)-equivariant gauge field constructed in arXiv:0905.2338, we perform the dimensional reduction of the theory over the fuzzy sphere. The emergent model is a noncommutative U(1) gauge theory coupled adjointly to a set of scalar fields. We study this model on the Groenewald-Moyal plane and find that, in certain limits, it admi…
We introduce a novel spacetime reduction procedure for the fields of a supergravity-Yang-Mills theory in generic curved spacetime background, and with large N flavor group, to linearized forms on an infinitesimal patch of local tangent space at a point in the spacetime manifold. Our new prescription for spacetime reduction preserves all of the local symmetries of the continuum field theory Lagrangian in the resulting zero-dimensional matrix Lagrangian, thereby obviating difficulties encountered in previous matrix proposals for emergent spacetime in recovering the full nonlinear symmetries of E…
We present a study of D=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills matrix models with SO(3) mass terms based on the Monte Carlo method. In the bosonic models we show the existence of an exotic first/second order transition from a phase with a well defined background geometry (the fuzzy sphere) to a phase with commuting matrices with no geometry in the sense of Connes. At the transition point the sphere expands abruptly to infinite size then it evaporates as we increase the temperature (the gauge coupling constant). The transition looks first order due to the discontinuity in the action whereas it looks secon…

We introduce new local gauge invariant variables for N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, explicitly parameterizing the physical Hilbert space of the theory. We show that these gauge invariant variables have a geometrical interpretation, and can be constructed such that the emergent geometry is that of N=1 supergravity: a Riemannian geometry with vector-spinor generated torsion. Full geometrization of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory is carried out, and geometry independent divergences associated to the inversion of a differential operator with zero modes -- that were encountered in the non-s…
We study a six matrix model with global $SO(3)\times SO(3)$ symmetry containing at most quartic powers of the matrices. This theory exhibits a phase transition from a geometrical phase at low temperature to a Yang-Mills matrix phase with no background geometrical structure at high temperature. This is an exotic phase transition in the same universality class as the three matrix model but with important differences. The geometrical phase is determined dynamically, as the system cools, and is given by a fuzzy four-sphere background ${\bf S}^2_N\times{\bf S}^2_N$, with an Abelian gauge field whic…
We re-address the self-intersection region in a figure-eight shaped center-vortex loop containing a frequently perturbed {\sl BPS monopole} subject to a core-oscillation frequency $ω_0$, rectifying a numerical error in estimating the system's radius $r_0$ in comparison to the spatial coarse-graining scale of infinite-volume thermodynamics. Implications are discussed. We also compute the lowest frequency $Ω_0$ of a spherically symmetric plasma oscillation within a {\sl neutral} and spatially homogeneous ball-like region of deconfining phase in dependence of its radius $R_0$. For $r_0=R_0$ we co…
Recently, a model for an emergent gravity based on $SO(5)$ Yang-Mills action in Euclidian 4-dimensional spacetime was proposed. In this work we provide some 1 and 2-loops computations and show that the model can accommodate suitable predicting values for the Newtonian constant. Moreover, it is shown that the typical scale of the expected transition between the quantum and the geometrodynamical theory is consistent with Planck scale. We also provide a discussion on the cosmological constant problem.
In a matrix model of pure $SU(2)$ Yang-Mills theory, boundaries emerge in the space of $\textrm{Mat}_{3}(\mathbb{R})$ and the Hamiltonian requires boundary conditions. We show the existence of edge localized glueball states which can have negative energies. These edge levels can be lifted to positive energies if the gluons acquire a London-like mass. This suggests a new phase of QCD with an incompressible bulk.
Plasma balls are droplets of deconfined plasma surrounded by a confining vacuum. We present the first holographic simulation of their real-time evolution via the dynamics of localized, finite-energy black holes in the five-dimensional anti-de Sitter (AdS) soliton background. The dual gauge theory is four-dimensional, N=4 super Yang-Mills compactified on a circle with supersymmetry-breaking boundary conditions. We consider horizonless initial data sourced by a massless scalar field. Prompt scalar field collapse then produces an excited black hole at the bottom of the geometry together with grav…
A detailed Monte Carlo calculation of the phase diagram of bosonic IKKT Yang-Mills matrix models in three and six dimensions with quartic mass deformations is given. Background emergent fuzzy geometries in two and four dimensions are observed with a fluctuation given by a noncommutative $U(1)$ gauge theory very weakly coupled to normal scalar fields. The geometry, which is determined dynamically, is given by the fuzzy spheres ${\bf S}^2_N$ and ${\bf S}^2_N\times{\bf S}^2_N$ respectively. The three and six matrix models are in the same universality class with some differences. For example, in t…
