We map noncommutative (NC) U(1) gauge theory on R^d_C X R^{2n}_{NC} to U(N -> \infty) Yang-Mills theory on R^d_C, where R^d_C is a d-dimensional commutative spacetime while R^{2n}_{NC} is a 2n-dimensional NC space. The resulting U(N) Yang-Mills theory on R^d_C is equivalent to that obtained by the dimensional reduction of (d+2n)-dimensional U(N) Yang-Mills theory onto R^d_C. We show that the gauge-Higgs system (A_μ,Φ^a) in the U(N -> \infty) Yang-Mills theory on R^d_C leads to an emergent geometry in the (d+2n)-dimensional spacetime whose metric was determined by Ward a long time ago. In particular, the 10-dimensional gravity for d=4 and n=3 corresponds to the emergent geometry arising from the 4-dimensional N=4 vector multiplet in the AdS/CFT duality. We further elucidate the emergent gravity by showing that the gauge-Higgs system (A_μ,Φ^a) in half-BPS configurations describes self-dual Einstein gravity.
We present a unified description of gravity and electromagnetism in the framework of a $Z_2$ noncommutative differential calculus. It can be considered as a ``discrete version" of Kaluza-Klein theory, where the fifth continuous dimension is replaced by two discrete points. We derive an action which coincides with the dimensionally reduced one of the ordinary Kaluza-Klein theory.
We showed before that self-dual electromagnetism in noncommutative (NC) spacetime is equivalent to self-dual Einstein gravity. This result implies a striking picture about gravity: Gravity can emerge from electromagnetism in NC spacetime. Gravity is then a collective phenomenon emerging from gauge fields living in fuzzy spacetime. We elucidate in some detail why electromagnetism in NC spacetime should be a theory of gravity. In particular, we show that NC electromagnetism is realized through the Darboux theorem as a diffeomorphism symmetry G which is spontaneously broken to symplectomorphism H…
We study electric-magnetic duality rotations for noncommutative electromagnetism (NCEM). We express NCEM as a nonlinear commutative U(1) gauge theory and show that it is self-dual when the noncommutativity parameter θis light-like (e.g. θ^{0i}=θ^{1i}). This implies, in the slowly varying field approximation, self-duality of NCEM to all orders in θ.
We compute the noncommutative de Rham cohomology for the finite-dimensional q-deformed coordinate ring $C_q[SL_2]$ at odd roots of unity and with its standard 4-dimensional differential structure. We find that $H^1$ and $H^3$ have three additional modes beyond the generic $q$-case where they are 1-dimensional, while $H^2$ has six additional modes. We solve the spin-0 and Maxwell theory on $C_q[SL_2]$ including a complete picture of the self-dual and anti-self dual solutions and of Lorentz and temporal gauge fixing. The system behaves in fact like a noncompact space with self-propagating modes …
We develop some ideas about gauge symmetry in the context of Maxwell's theory of electromagnetism in the Hamiltonian formalism. One great benefit of this formalism is that it pairs momentum and configurational degrees of freedom, so that a decomposition of one side into subsets can be translated into a decomposition of the other. In the case of electromagnetism, this enables us to pair degrees of freedom of the electric field with degrees of freedom of the vector potential. Another benefit is that the formalism algorithmically identifies subsets of the equations of motion that represent time-d…
Using noncommutative geometry we do U(1) gauge theory on the permutation group $S_3$. Unlike usual lattice gauge theories the use of a nonAbelian group here as spacetime corresponds to a background Riemannian curvature. In this background we solve spin 0, 1/2 and spin 1 equations of motion, including the spin 1 or `photon' case in the presence of sources, i.e. a theory of classical electromagnetism. Moreover, we solve the U(1) Yang-Mills theory (this differs from the U(1) Maxwell theory in noncommutative geometry), including the moduli spaces of flat connections. We show that the Yang-Mills ac…
We analyze the residual gauge freedom in light-cone electromagnetism in four dimensions. The standard boundary conditions involved in the so-called $lc_2$ formalism, which contains only the two physical degrees of freedom, allow for a subset of residual gauge transformations. We relax the boundary conditions imposed on the fields in order to obtain all the residual gauge transformations. We compute the canonical generators for Poincaré and gauge transformations with these relaxed boundary conditions. This enables us to distinguish between the trivial (proper) and large (improper) gauge transfo…
We address questions regarding construction and implications of gauge-invariant "dressed" observables in nontrivial background geometries such as that of a black hole. Formally, such observables can be constructed, e.g. by locating points with geodesics launched from infinity. However, practical complications arise in non-trivial geometries, and in particular for observables behind black hole horizons. Greater simplicity can be achieved by considering null constructions where the dressing lies along a null geodesic, or null surface such as a cone. We first investigate basic properties of these…
We deal with the gravitational theory relevant to gravito-electromagnetism (GEM) exactly. It is shown that the theory can be decomposed in terms of two sectors of Abelian gauge field theories. The two sectors dominate the whole action in an inverse way, showing a sign of strong-weak duality.
The generation of large-scale magnetic fields is studied in dilaton electromagnetism in noncommutative inflationary cosmology taking into account the effects of the spacetime uncertainty principle motivated by string theory. We show that it is possible to generate large-scale magnetic fields with sufficient strength to account for the observed fields in galaxies and clusters of galaxies through only adiabatic compression without dynamo amplification mechanism in models of power-law inflation based on spacetime noncommutativity without introducing a huge hierarchy between the dilaton's potentia…
In the reduced phase space of electromagnetism, the generator of duality rotations in the usual Poisson bracket is shown to generate Maxwell's equations in a second, much simpler Poisson bracket. This gives rise to a hierarchy of bi-Hamiltonian evolution equations in the standard way. The result can be extended to linearized Yang-Mills theory, linearized gravity and massless higher spin gauge fields.
We propose a constraint on the noncommutative gauge theory with U(N) gauge group which gives rise to a noncommutative version of the SU(N) gauge group. The baryon operator is also constructed.
The gauge connections corresponding to electromagnetism, Yang-Mills theory and Einstein gravity can be derived by assuming specific commutation relations between the phase-space variables of a first quantized theory. Extending the procedure to noncommuting coordinates leads to new types of dynamics, which are explored. In particular, the conditions for the coexistence of an electromagnetic background and a noncommutative two-from are found, as well as a generalized mechanism of dimensional reduction. The noncommutative deformation of a gravitational background is also constructed. The present …
It has recently been shown that there exists a class of stable gapless spin liquids in 3+1 dimensions described by higher rank tensor U(1) gauge fields, giving rise to an emergent tensor electromagnetism. The tensor gauge field of these theories couples naturally to subdimensional particles (such as fractons), which are restricted by gauge invariance to move only along lower-dimensional subspaces of the system. We here work out some of the basic generalized electromagnetic properties of subdimensional particles coupled to tensor electromagnetism, such as generalized electrostatic fields, poten…

"Physical theories of fundamental significance tend to be gauge theories. These are theories in which the physical system being dealt with is described by more variables than there are physically independent degree of freedom. The physically meaningful degrees of freedom then reemerge as being those invariant under a transformation connecting the variables (gauge transformation). Thus, one introduces extra variables to make the description more transparent and brings in at the same time a gauge symmetry to extract the physically relevant content. It is a remarkable occurrence that the road to …
There are strong restrictions on the possible representations and in general on the matter content of gauge theories formulated on noncommutative Moyal spaces, termed as noncommutative gauge theory no-go theorem. According to the no-go theorem \cite{no-go}, matter fields in the noncommutative U(1) gauge theory can only have $\pm 1$ or zero charges and for a generic noncommutative $\prod_{i=1}^n U(N_i)$ gauge theory matter fields can be charged under at most two of the $U(N_i)$ gauge group factors. On the other hand, it has been argued in the literature that, since a noncommutative U(N) gauge t…
We examine the renormalizability problem of spontaneously broken non-Abelian gauge theory on noncommutative spacetime. We show by an explicit analysis of the U(2) case that ultraviolet divergences can be removed at one loop level with the same limited number of renormalization constants as required on commutative spacetime. We thus push forward the efforts towards constructing realistic models of gauge interactions on noncommutative spacetime.
In Dirac-Bergmann constrained dynamics, a first-class constraint typically does not _alone_ generate a gauge transformation. Each first-class constraint in Maxwell's theory generates a change in the electric field E by an arbitrary gradient, spoiling Gauss's law. The secondary constraint p^i,_i=0 still holds, but being a function of derivatives of momenta (mere auxiliary fields), it is not directly about the observable electric field (a function of derivatives of A), which couples to charge. Only a special combination of the two first-class constraints, the Anderson-Bergmann-Castellani gauge g…
We construct exact solutions to noncommutative gravity following the formulation of Chamseddine and show that they are in general accompanied by Abelian gauge fields which are first order in the noncommutative scale. This provides a mechanism for generating cosmological electromagnetic fields in an expanding space-time background, and also leads to multipole-like fields surrounding black holes. Exact solutions to noncommutative Einstein-Maxwell theory can give rise to first order corrections to the metric tensor, as well as to the electromagnetic fields. This leads to first order shifts in the…
The gauge covariance of the wave function phase factor in noncommutative quantum mechanics (NCQM) is discussed. We show that the naive path integral formulation and an approach where one shifts the coordinates of NCQM in the presence of a background vector potential leads to the gauge non-covariance of the phase factor. Due to this fact, the Aharonov-Bohm phase in NCQM which is evaluated through the path-integral or by shifting the coordinates is neither gauge invariant nor gauge covariant. We show that the gauge covariant Aharonov-Bohm effect should be described by using the noncommutative Wi…
On Riemannian signature conformal 4-manifolds we give a conformally invariant extension of the Maxwell operator on 1-forms. We show the extension is in an appropriate sense injectively elliptic, and recovers the invariant gauge operator of Eastwood and Singer. The extension has a natural compatibility with the de Rham complex and we prove that, given a certain restriction, its conformally invariant null space is isomorphic to the first de Rham cohomology. General machinery for extending this construction is developed and as a second application we describe an elliptic extension of a natural op…
We extend the work of Mello et al. based in Cabbibo and Ferrari concerning the description of electromagnetism with two gauge fields from a variational principle, i.e. an action. We provide a systematic independent derivation of the allowed actions which have only one magnetic and one electric physical fields and are invariant under the discrete symmetries $P$ and $T$. We conclude that neither the Lagrangian, nor the Hamiltonian, are invariant under the electromagnetic duality rotations. This agrees with the weak-strong coupling mixing characteristic of the duality due to the Dirac quantizatio…
I argue that the gauge group of noncommutative gauge theory consists of maps into unitary operators on Hilbert space of the form $u=1+K$ with $K$ compact. Some implications of this proposal are outlined.
We consider gauge theories on noncommutative euclidean space . In particular, we discuss the structure of gauge group following standard mathematical definitions and using the ideas of hep-th/0102182.
The black-body radiation is considered in a theory with noncommutative electromagnetic fields; that is noncommutativity is introduced in field space, rather than in real space. A direct implication of the result on Cosmic Microwave Background map is argued.
The concept of covariant coordinates on noncommutative spaces leads directly to gauge theories with generalized noncommutative gauge fields of the type that arises in string theory with background B-fields. The theory is naturally expressed in terms of cochains in an appropriate cohomology; we discuss how it fits into the framework of projective modules. The equivalence of star products that arise from the background field with and without fluctuations and Kontsevich's formality theorem allow an explicitly construction of a map that relates ordinary gauge theory and noncommutative gauge theory…
We show that in the presence of U(1) noncommutative gauge interaction the noncommutative tachyonic system exhibits solitonic solutions for finite value of the noncommutativity parameter.
Following the formalism of enveloping algebras and star product calculus we formulate and analyze a model of gauge gravity on noncommutative spaces and examine the conditions of its equivalence to general relativity. The corresponding Seiberg-Witten maps are established which allow the definition of respective dynamics for a finite number of gravitational gauge field components on noncommutative spaces.
We investigate the decomposition of noncommutative gauge potential $\hat{A_{i}}$, and find it has inner structure, namely, $\hat{A_{i}}$ can be decomposed in two parts $\hat{b_{i}}$ and $\hat{a_{i}}$, here $\hat{b_{i}}$ satisfies gauge transformations while $\hat{a_{i}}$ satisfies adjoint transformations, so dose the Seiberg-Witten mapping of noncommutative U(1) gauge potential. By means of Seiberg-Witten mapping, we construct a mapping of unit vector field between noncommutative space and ordinary space, and find the noncommutative U(1) gauge potential and its gauge field tenser can be expres…
We present a pedagogical introduction into noncommutative gauge theories, their stringy origin, and non-perturbative effects, including monopole and instanton solutions
Anomalies arising from nonplanar triangle diagrams of noncommutative gauge theory are studied. Local chiral gauge anomalies for both noncommutative U(1) and U(N) gauge theories with adjoint matter fields are shown to vanish. For noncommutative QED with fundamental matters, due to UV/IR mixing a finite anomaly emerges from the nonplanar contributions. It involves a generalized $\star$-product of gauge fields.
We present here a theory of fractional electro-magnetism which is capable of describing phenomenon as disparate as the non-locality of the Pippard kernel in superconductivity and anomalous dimensions for conserved currents in holographic dilatonic models. The starting point for our analysis is the observation that the standard current conservation equations remain unchanged if any differential operator that commutes with the total exterior derivative multiplies the current. Such an operator, effectively changing the dimension of the current, increases the allowable gauge transformations in ele…
We discuss the different possibilities of constructing the various energy-momentum tensors for noncommutative gauge field models. We use Jackiw's method in order to get symmetric and gauge invariant stress tensors--at least for commutative gauge field theories. The noncommutative counterparts are analyzed with the same methods. The issues for the noncommutative cases are worked out.
We examine several aspects of S-duality of four-dimensional noncommutative gauge theory. By making duality transformation explicit, we find that S-dual of noncommutative gauge theory is defined in terms of dual noncommutative deformation. In `magnetic' noncommutative U(1) gauge theory, we show that, in addition to gauge bosons, open D-strings constitute important low-energy excitations: noncritical open D-strings. Upon S-duality, they are mapped to noncritical open F-strings. We propose that, in dual `electric' noncommutative U(1) gauge theory, the latters are identified with gauge-invariant, …
We discuss noncommutative gauge theory from the generalized geometry point of view. We argue that the equivalence between the commutative and semiclassically noncommutative DBI actions is naturally encoded in the generalized geometry of D-branes.
We implement the Hamiltonian treatment of a nonAbelian noncommutative gauge theory, considering with some detail the algebraic structure of the noncommutative symmetry group. The first class constraints and Hamiltonian are obtained and their algebra derived, as well as the form of the gauge invariance they impose on the first order action.
We develop a formalism to realize algebras defined by relations on function spaces. For this porpose we construct the Weyl-ordered star-product and present a method how to calculate star-products with the help of commuting vector fields. Concepts developed in noncommutative differential geometry will be applied to this type of algebras and we construct actions for noncommutative field theories. Derivations of star-products makes it further possible to extend noncommutative gauge theory in the Seiberg-Witten formalism with covariant derivatives. In the commutative limit these theories are becom…
Gauge theories are formulated on the noncommutative two-sphere. These theories have only finite number of degrees of freedom, nevertheless they exhibit both the gauge symmetry and the SU(2) "Poincaré" symmetry of the sphere. In particular, the coupling of gauge fields to chiral fermions is naturally achieved.
As a tool to carry out the quantization of gauge theory on a noncommutative space, we present a Dirac operator that behaves as a line element of the canonical noncommutative space. Utilizing this operator, we construct the Dixmier trace, which is the regularized trace for infinite-dimensional matrices. We propose the possibility of solving the cosmological constant problem by applying our gauge theory on the noncommutative space.
Studies of noncommutative gauge theory have mainly focused on noncommutative spacetimes with constant noncommutative structure, with little known about actions for noncommutative 4D Yang-Mills theory beyond this case. We construct an action for Yang-Mills theory on a quadratically-noncommutative spacetime, i.e. of quantum-plane type, obtained from a Drinfeld twist, with star-gauge symmetry. Applied to supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, this gives a candidate AdS/CFT dual of string theory on a related deformation of AdS$_5\times$S$^5$, which is expected to be integrable in the planar limit.
Field theory and gauge theory on noncommutative spaces have been established as their own areas of research in recent years. The hope prevails that a noncommutative gauge theory will deliver testable experimental predictions and will thus be a serious candidate for an extension of the Standard Model. This note contains the results for expanded gauge theory actions on a noncommutative space with constant theta, up to second order, together with a discussion of the ambiguities of the expanded theory and how they affect the action.
First, we briefly review the description of gravity theories as gauge theories in three and four dimensions. Specifically, we recall the procedure in which the results of General Relativity in three and four dimensions are recovered in a gauge-theoretic approach. Also, the procedure is applied for the case of the Weyl gravity, too. Then, after reminding briefly the formulation of gauge theories on noncommutative spaces, we review our most recent works in which gravity models are constructed as gauge theories on noncommutative spaces.
We introduce a formulation of gauge theory on noncommutative spaces based on the concept of covariant coordinates. Some important examples are discussed in detail. A Seiberg-Witten map is established in all cases.
Translation-invariant noncommutative gauge theories are discussed in the setting of matrix modeled gauge theories. Using the matrix model formulation the explicit form of consistent anomalies and consistent Schwinger terms for translation-invariant noncommutative gauge theories are derived.
We analyze the renormalizability properties of pure gauge noncommutative SU(N) theory in the $θ$-expanded approach. We find that the theory is one-loop renormalizable to first order in $θ$.
