In this short note, we propose an algorithm based on the expansions of amplitudes, the dimensional reduction technic and the differential operators, to calculate the tree level scalar-graviton amplitudes with two massive scalars, as well as the tree level scalar-photon-graviton amplitudes with two massive scalars and one photon. While applying the unitarity method, these amplitudes are necessary inputs for the calculation of post-Newtonian and post-Minkowskian expansions in general relativity for two massive charged objects interact with gravity and electromagnetic field.
In arXiv:2008.04330 it was shown that supertranslation and $\overline{SL(2,\mathbb C)}$ current algebra symmetries, corresponding to leading and subleading soft graviton theorems, are enough to determine the tree level MHV graviton scattering amplitudes. In this note we clarify the role of subsubleading soft graviton theorem in this context.
We show how the maximally helicity violating (MHV) scattering amplitudes for gravitons can be related to current correlators and vertex operators in twistor space. This is similar to what happens in Yang-Mills theory and raises the possibility of a direct twistor-string-like construction for ${\cal N}=8$ supergravity.
Two new formulas which express n-graviton MHV tree amplitudes in terms of sums of squares of n-gluon amplitudes are discussed. The first formula is derived from recursion relations. The second formula, simpler because it involves fewer permutations, is obtained from the variant of the Berends, Giele, Kuijf formula given in Arxiv:0707.1035.
A new class of twistor string theories were recently constructed by Abou-Zeid, Hull and Mason. The most interesting one of these theories has the particle content of N=8 supergravity. Arguments are given for the vanishing of the (+ - -)-helicity amplitude for gravitons which suggest that this theory describes a chiral N=8 supergravity rather than Einstein supergravity.
We show that the soft part of the charge generating infinitesimal superrotations can be expressed, in harmonic gauge, in terms of metric components evaluated at the boundaries of null infinity that are subleading in a large radius expansion. We then recast the spin memory observable in terms of these boundary values.
In this paper, we study the tree amplitudes with gluons coupled to gravitons. We first study the relations among the mixed amplitudes. With BCFW on-shell recursion relation, we will show the color-order reversed relation, $U(1)$-decoupling relation and KK relation hold for tree amplitudes with gluons coupled to gravitons. We then study the disk relation which expresses mixed amplitudes by pure gluon amplitudes. More specifically we will prove the disk relation for mixed amplitudes with gluons coupled to one graviton. Using the disk relation and the properties of pure gluon amplitudes, the colo…
We compute graviton scattering amplitudes in M-theory using Feynman rules for a scalar particle coupled to gravity in eleven dimensions. The processes that we consider describe the single graviton exchange and the double graviton exchange, that in M(atrix) theory correspond to the $v^4/r^7$- and $v^6/r^{14}$-term respectively. We further show that the $ v^6/r^{14}$-term appearing in M(atrix) theory at two-loops can be obtained from the covariant eleven-dimensional four-graviton amplitude. Finally, we calculate the $v^8/r^{18}$-term appearing at two-loops in M(atrix) theory. It has been previou…
In our previous work (Phys. Rev. D63, 085010, hep-th/0011290), we showed that the brane universe on the giant graviton moving in the near-horizon background of the dilatonic D(6-p)-brane is described by the mirage cosmology. We study thermodynamic properties of the moving giant graviton by applying thermodynamics of cosmology and the recently proposed holographic principles of cosmology. We find that the Fischler-Susskind holographic bound is satisfied by the closed brane universe on the moving giant graviton with p>3. The Bekenstein and the Hubble entropy bounds and the recently proposed Verl…
We use the Cutkosky rules as a tool for determining the infinities present in graviton scattering amplitudes. We are able to confirm theoretical derivations of counterterms in Einstein-Maxwell theory and to determine new results in the Dirac-Einstein counter-Lagrangian.
We construct an expression for the n-point one-loop graviton scattering amplitude with a single negative helicity external leg using an augmented recursion technique. We analyse the soft-limits of these amplitudes and demonstrate that they have soft behaviour beyond the conjectured universal behaviour.
We compute the three-graviton tree amplitude in Type IIB superstring theory compactified to six dimensions using the manifestly (6d) supersymmetric Berkovits-Vafa-Witten worldsheet variables. We consider two cases of background geometry: the flat space example R6xK3, and the curved example AdS3xS3xK3 with Ramond flux, and compute the correlation functions in the bulk.
Techniques based upon the string organisation of amplitudes may be used to simplify field theory calculations. We apply these techniques to perturbative gravity and calculate all one-loop amplitudes for four-graviton scattering with arbitrary internal particle content. Decomposing the amplitudes into contributions arising from supersymmetric multiplets greatly simplifies these calculations. We also discuss how unitarity may be used to constrain the amplitudes.
We extend the Berkovits-Maldacena prescription for MHV amplitudes of the open superstring to the closed superstring, showing that in the α'=0 limit it reduces to the result of supergravity found recently by Hodges. We also verify that this prescription calculates the correct superstring tree level MHV amplitude for 4 gravitons including α' corrections.
We investigate the giant gravitons in the maximally supersymmetric IIB pp-wave from several viewpoints: (i) the dynamics of D3-branes, (ii) the world-sheet description and (iii) the correlation functions in the dual N=4 Yang-Mills theory. In particular, we derive the BPS equation of a D3-brane with magnetic flux, which is equivalent to multiple D-strings, and discuss the behavior of solutions in the presence of RR-flux. We find solutions which represent the excitations of the giant gravitons in that system.
We present unitarity as a method for determining the infinities present in graviton scattering amplitudes. The infinities are a combination of IR and UV. By understanding the soft singularities we may extract the UV infinities and relate these to counter-terms in the effective action. As an demonstration of this method we rederive the UV infinities present at one-loop when gravity is coupled to matter.
We consider the D^8 R^5 and D^{10} R^5 terms in the low momentum expansion of the five graviton amplitude in type IIB string theory at one loop. They involve integrals of various modular graph functions over the fundamental domain of SL(2,Z). Unlike the graphs which arise in the four graviton amplitude or at lower orders in the momentum expansion of the five graviton amplitude where the links are given by scalar Green functions, there are several graphs for the D^8 R^5 and D^{10} R^5 terms where two of the links are each given by a derivative of the Green function. Starting with appropriate au…
The Cachazo-Strominger subleading soft graviton theorem for a positive helicity soft graviton is equivalent to the Ward identities for $\overline{SL(2,\mathbb C)}$ currents. This naturally gives rise to a $\overline{SL(2,\mathbb C)}$ current algebra living on the celestial sphere. The generators of the $\overline{SL(2,\mathbb C)}$ current algebra and the supertranslations, coming from a positive helicity leading soft graviton, form a closed algebra. We find that the OPE of two graviton primaries in the Celestial CFT, extracted from MHV amplitudes, is completely determined in terms of this alge…
We present a complete analysis for double soft limit of graviton scattering amplitude using the formalism proposed by Cachazo, He and Yuan. Our results agree with that obtained via BCFW recursion relations in arXiv:1504.05558. In addition we find precise relations between degenerate and nondegenerate solutions of scattering equations with local and nonlocal terms in the soft factor.
We show how the recently introduced "Pure Connection Formulation" of gravity provides a natural framework for approaching the problem of computing graviton scattering amplitudes. In particular, we show that the interaction vertices are greatly simplified in this formalism as compared to the Einstein-Hilbert perturbation theory. This, in turns, leads to very simple Feynman rules that we employ for the direct computations. Furthermore, this framework naturally extends to wider class of gravitational theories, which encompasses General Relativity as a special case. We compute all the possible tre…
Recently, tree-level recursion relations for scattering amplitudes of gluons in Yang-Mills theory have been derived. In this note we propose a generalization of the recursion relations to tree-level scattering amplitudes of gravitons. We use the relations to derive new simple formulae for all amplitudes up to six gravitons. In particular, we present an explicit formula for the six graviton non-MHV amplitude. We prove the relations for MHV and next-to-MHV n-graviton amplitudes and for all eight-graviton amplitudes.
In the IR limit the Matrix string theory is expected to be described by the $S^N\R^{8}$ supersymmetric orbifold sigma model. Recently Dijkgraaf, Verlinde and Verlinde proposed a vertex that may describe the type IIA string interaction. In this paper using this interaction vertex we derive the four graviton scattering amplitude from the orbifold model in the large $N$ limit.
We express all tree-level graviton amplitudes in Einstein's gravity as the collinear limits of a linear combination of pure Yang-Mills amplitudes in which each graviton is represented by two gauge bosons, each of them carrying exactly one half of graviton's momentum and helicity.
We obtain T--duality invariant second order differential equations satisfied by the $D^8\mathcal{R}^4$ and $D^{10} \mathcal{R}^4$ interactions from the low energy expansion of the one loop four graviton amplitude in toroidally compactified type II string theory. The eigenvalues of these equations are completely determined by the structure of the one loop integrands. Unlike the BPS interactions, these non--BPS interactions satisfy Poisson equations having source terms that receive contributions from both the bulk and boundary of the worldsheet moduli space. We explicitly solve these equations i…
We give a pedagogical review to alternative, first quantised approaches to calculating graviton scattering amplitudes, giving an introduction to string inspired approaches and presenting more recent work based on the worldline formalism of quantum field theory that is motivated by these historic results. We describe how these first quantised techniques can greatly simplify the determination of such amplitudes, in particular reducing the number of Feynman-like diagrams that enter the computation and leading to compact results.
We evaluate in great detail one-loop four-graviton field theory amplitudes in pure N=4 D=4 supergravity. The expressions are obtained by taking the field theory limits of (4,0) and (2,2) space-time supersymmetric string theory models. For each model we extract the contributions of the spin-1 and spin-2 N=4 supermultiplets running in the loop. We show that all of those constructions lead to the same four-dimensional result for the four-graviton amplitudes in pure supergravity even though they come from different string theory models.
We find explicit expression for the one-loop four-graviton amplitude in eleven-dimensional supergravity compactified on a circle. Represented in terms of the string coupling (related to the compactification radius) it takes the form of an infinite sum of perturbative string loop corrections. We also compute the amplitude in the case of compactification on a 2-torus which is given by an SL(2,Z) invariant expansion in powers of the torus area. We discuss the structure of quantum corrections in eleven-dimensional theory and their relation to string theory.
We study the bending of gravitons that pass near a massive object like the Sun, using scattering amplitudes in which the Sun is represented by a massive scalar particle. Our results complete previous work on the bending angles of massless spin-0, spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ and spin-1 particles, and provides more evidence for the violation of the equivalence principle at the quantum level, in the sense that the quantum corrections to bending angles for massless particles with different spins are different. We provide a universal expression for the bending angle in terms of coefficients of triangle and …
A covariant path integral calculation of the even spin structure contribution to the one-loop N-graviton scattering amplitude in the type-II superstring theory is presented. The apparent divergence of the $N=5$ amplitude is resolved by separating it into twelve independent terms corresponding to different orders of inserting the graviton vertex operators. Each term is well defined in an appropriate kinematic region and can be analytically continued to physical regions where it develops branch cuts required by unitarity. The zero-slope limit of the $N=5$ amplitude is performed, and the Feynman …
We consider the low momentum expansion of the four graviton and the two graviton--two gluon amplitudes in heterotic string theory at one loop in ten dimensions, and analyze contributions upto the D^2 R^4 interaction from the four graviton amplitude, and the D^4 R^2 F^2 interaction from the two graviton--two gluon amplitude. The calculations are performed by obtaining equations for the relevant modular graph functions that arise in the modular invariant integrals, and involve amalgamating techniques used in the type II theory and the calculation of the elliptic genus in the heterotic theory.
In this paper we continue our study of the tree level MHV graviton scattering amplitudes from the point of view of celestial holography. In arXiv:2008.04330 we showed that the celestial OPE of two gravitons in the MHV sector can be written as a linear combination of $\overline{SL(2,\mathbb C)}$ current algebra and supertranslation descendants. In this note we show that the OPE is in fact manifestly invariant under the infinite dimensional Virasoro algebra as is expected for a $2$-D CFT. This is consistent with the conjecture that the holographic dual in $4$-D asymptotically flat space time is …
Tree-level scattering amplitudes for gravitons, gluons and Goldstone particles in any dimensions are strongly constrained by basic principles, and they are intimately related to each other via various relations. We study two types of "universal expansions" with respect to gauge bosons and Goldstone bosons: the former express tree amplitudes in Einstein gravity (Yang-Mills) as linear combinations of single-trace Einstein-Yang-Mills (Yang-Mills-$ϕ^3$) amplitudes with coefficients given by Lorentz products of polarizations and momenta; the latter express tree amplitudes in non-linear sigma model,…
We study a freely falling graviton propagating in AdS in the context of the D1D5 CFT, where we introduce an interaction by turning on a deformation operator. We start with one left and right moving boson in the CFT. After applying two deformation operators, the initial bosons split into three left moving and three right moving bosons. We compute the amplitude for various energies and extrapolate the result to the large energy region. At early times, the amplitude is linear in time. This corresponds to an infalling graviton becoming redshifted in AdS. At late times, the amplitude is periodic, w…
We derive an ABDK-like relation between the one- and two-loop four-graviton amplitudes in N=8 supergravity. Specifically we show that the infrared divergent part of the two-loop amplitude is one-half the square of the one-loop amplitude, suggesting an exponential structure for IR divergences. The difference between the two-loop amplitude and one-half the square of the full one-loop amplitude is therefore finite, and expressible in a relatively simple form. We give arguments for generalizations to higher loops and n-point functions, suggesting that the exponential of the full one-loop amplitude…
Tree-level scattering amplitudes for a scalar particle coupled to an arbitrary number N of photons and a single graviton are computed. We employ the worldline formalism as the main tool to compute the irreducible part of the amplitude, where all the photons and the graviton are directly attached to the scalar line, then derive a tree replacement rule to construct the reducible parts of the amplitude which involve irreducible pure N-photon two-scalar amplitudes where one photon line emits the graviton. We test our construction by verifying the on-shell gauge and diffeomorphism Ward identities, …
A natural SL(2,Z) invariant generalization of the Veneziano amplitude in type IIB superstring theory is investigated. It includes certain perturbative and non-perturbative (D-instanton) contributions, and it reduces to the correct expressions in different limits. The singularities are poles in the $s$-$t$-$u$ channels, corresponding to the exchange of particles with a mass spectrum coinciding with that of $(p,q)$ string states. We describe the general structure of the associated perturbative corrections to the effective action.
We study some of the properties of dual giant gravitons - D2-branes wrapped on an $S^{2}\subset AdS_{4}$ - in type IIA string theory on $AdS_{4}\times \mathbb{CP}^{3}$. In particular we confirm that the spectrum of small fluctuations about the giant is both real and independent of the size of the graviton. We also extend previously developed techniques for attaching open strings to giants to this D2-brane giant and focus on two particular limits of the resulting string sigma model: In the pp-wave limit we quantize the string and compute the spectrum of bosonic excitations while in the semiclas…
Recently, new soft graviton theorem proposed by Cachazo and Strominger has inspired a lot of works. In this note, we use the KLT-formula to investigate the theorem. We have shown how the soft behavior of color ordered Yang-Mills amplitudes can be combined with KLT relation to give the soft behavior of gravity amplitudes. As a byproduct, we find two nontrivial identities of the KLT momentum kernel must hold.
Recently, Bern, Carrasco and Johansson conjectured dual identities inside the gluon tree scattering amplitudes. In this paper, we use the properties of the heterotic string and open string tree scattering amplitudes to refine and derive these dual identities. These identities can be carried over to loop amplitudes using the unitarity method. Furthermore, given the $M$-gluon (as well as gluon-gluino) tree amplitudes, $M$-graviton (as well as graviton-gravitino) tree scattering amplitudes can be written down immediately, avoiding the derivation of Feynman rules and the evaluation of Feynman diag…
We present first results of a systematic study of the structure of the low energy limit of the one-loop photon-graviton amplitudes induced by massive scalars and spinors. Our main objective is the search of KLT-type relations where effectively two photons merge into a graviton. We find such a relation at the graviton-photon-photon level. We also derive the diffeomorphism Ward identity for the 1PI one graviton - N photon amplitudes.
Writing the fully color dressed and graviton amplitudes, respectively, as ${\bf A}=<C|A> =<C|M|N> $ and ${\bf A}_{gr}= <\tilde N|M|N> $, where $|A> $ is a set of Kleiss-Kuijf color-ordered basis, $|N>, $|\tilde N> $ and $|C>$ are the similarly ordered numerators and color coefficients, we show that the propagator matrix $M$ has $(n-3)(n-3)!$ independent eigenvectors $|λ^0_j>$ with zero eigenvalue, for $n$-particle processes. The resulting equations $<λ^0_j|A> = 0$ are relations among the color ordered amplitudes. The freedom to shift $|N> \to |N> +\sum_j f_j|λ^0_j>$ and similarly for $|\tilde …
We present and prove a formula for the MHV scattering amplitude of n gravitons at tree level. Some of the more interesting features of the formula, which set it apart as being significantly different from many more familiar formulas, include the absence of any vestigial reference to a cyclic ordering of the gravitons--making it in a sense a truly gravitational formula, rather than a recycled Yang-Mills result, and the fact that it simultaneously manifests both S_{n-2} symmetry as well as large-z behavior that is O(1/z^2) term-by-term, without relying on delicate cancellations. The formula is s…
The MHV or CSW expansion of tree-level Yang-Mills amplitudes provides an elegant and simple way of obtaining analytic formulas for S-matrix elements. Inspired by the BCFW technique, a systematic approach to obtain the MHV expansion was introduced by Risager, using a particular complex deformation. Although it works for Yang-Mills amplitudes, Risager's technique fails to provide an MHV expansion already for Next-to-MHV gravity amplitudes with more than eleven particles, as shown by Bianchi, Elvang and Freedman in 2008. This fact implies that in this sector there is a contribution at infinity st…
In this note, it is shown that closed string graviton scattering amplitudes obey the same subleading soft limit as field theory graviton scattering amplitudes. The result is derived using a combination of recent results and methods including the subleading soft expansion for type I open string gluon disk scattering amplitudes, the single value projection for multiple $ζ$ values, and the KLT relations in field and string theory.
We report on the status of an ongoing effort to calculate the complete one-loop low-energy effective actions in Einstein-Maxwell theory with a massive scalar or spinor loop, and to use them for obtaining the explicit form of the corresponding M-graviton/N-photon amplitudes. We present explicit results for the effective actions at the one-graviton four-photon level, and for the amplitudes at the one-graviton two-photon level. As expected on general grounds, these amplitudes relate in a simple way to the corresponding four-photon amplitudes. We also derive the gravitational Ward identity for the…
Using the CHY-formalism and its extension to a double cover we provide covariant expressions for tree-level amplitudes with two massive scalar legs and an arbitrary number of gravitons in D dimensions. Using unitarity methods, such amplitudes are needed inputs for the computation of post-Newtonian and post-Minkowskian expansions in classical general relativity.
We define a theory of gravity by constructing a gravitational holonomy operator in twistor space. The theory is a gauge theory whose Chan-Paton factor is given by a trace over elements of Poincaré algebra and Iwahori-Hecke algebra. This corresponds to a fact that, in a spinor-momenta formalism, gravitational theories are invariant under spacetime translations and diffeomorphism. The former symmetry is embedded in tangent spaces of frame fields while the latter is realized by a braid trace. We make a detailed analysis on the gravitational Chan-Paton factor and show that an S-matrix functional f…
We consider the s-channel scattering of massive fermion or vector-boson pairs with equal helicities, mediated by a graviton in the linearized Einstein theory. We show that, although in general both spin-2 and spin-0 components are present in the exchanged graviton, there is a special set of reference frames where the spin-0 graviton component vanishes. This is connected to the dependence of the trace of the graviton propagator on the effective dimension of the space-time spanned by the sources. On the other hand, one finds a non-vanishing (Lorentz-invariant) interference of the graviton amplit…
We discuss the calculation of one-loop amplitudes in N=8 supergravity using MHV diagrams. In contrast to MHV amplitudes of gluons in Yang-Mills, tree-level MHV amplitudes of gravitons are not holomorphic in the spinor variables. In order to extend these amplitudes off shell, and use them as vertices to build loops, we introduce certain shifts for the spinor variables associated to the loop momenta. Using this off-shell prescription, we rederive the four-point MHV amplitude of gravitons at one loop, in complete agreement with known results. We also discuss the extension to the case of one-loop …
In this note we explicitly compute the graviton exchange graph for scalar fields with arbitrary conformal dimension Δin arbitrary spacetime dimension d. This results in an analytical function in Δas well as in d.
We analyze the critical ultraviolet behaviour of the four-graviton amplitude in N=8 supergravity to all order in perturbation. We use the Bern-Carrasco-Johansson diagrammatic expansion for N=8 supergravity multiloop amplitudes, where numerator factors are squares of the Lorentz factor of N=4 super-Yang-Mills amplitudes, and the analysis of the critical ultraviolet behaviour of the multiloop four-gluon amplitudes in the single- and double-trace sectors. We argue this implies that the superficial ultraviolet behaviour of the four-graviton N=8 amplitudes from four-loop order is determined by the …
We consider the one-loop five-graviton amplitude in type II string theory calculated in the light-cone gauge. Although it is not possible to explicitly evaluate the integrals over the positions of the vertex operators, a low-energy expansion can be obtained, which can then be used to infer terms in the low-energy effective action. After subtracting diagrams due to known D^{2n}R^4 terms, we show the absence of one-loop R^5 and D^2R^5 terms and determine the exact structure of the one-loop D^4R^5 terms where, interestingly, the coefficient in front of the D^4R^5 terms is identical to the coeffic…
We present new relations for scattering amplitudes of color ordered gluons, massive quarks and scalars minimally coupled to gravity. Tree-level amplitudes of arbitrary matter and gluon multiplicities involving one graviton are reduced to partial amplitudes in QCD or scalar QCD. The obtained relations are a direct generalization of the recently found Einstein-Yang-Mills relations. The proof of the new relation employs a simple diagrammatic argument trading the graviton-matter couplings to an `upgrade' of a gluon coupling with a color-kinematic replacement rule enforced. The use of the Melia-Joh…
