Tree-level scattering amplitudes for a scalar particle coupled to an arbitrary number N of photons and a single graviton are computed. We employ the worldline formalism as the main tool to compute the irreducible part of the amplitude, where all the photons and the graviton are directly attached to the scalar line, then derive a tree replacement rule to construct the reducible parts of the amplitude which involve irreducible pure N-photon two-scalar amplitudes where one photon line emits the graviton. We test our construction by verifying the on-shell gauge and diffeomorphism Ward identities, at arbitrary N.
We compute spin-flip cross section for graviton photoproduction on a spin-1/2 target of finite mass. Using this tree-level result, we find one-loop graviton correction to the spin-flip low-energy forward Compton scattering amplitude by using Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule. We show that this result agrees with the corresponding perturbative computations, implying the validity of the sum rule at one-loop level, contrary to the previous claims. We discuss possible effects from the black hole production and string Regge trajectory exchange at very high energies. These effects seem to soften the UV…
We use the feature that the gravitational Compton scattering amplitude factorizes in terms of Abelian QED amplitudes to evaluate various gravitational Compton processes. We examine both the QED and gravitational Compton scattering from a massive spin-1 system by the use of helicity amplitude methods. In the case of gravitational Compton scattering we show how the massless limit can be used to evaluate the cross section for graviton-photon scattering and discuss the difference between photon interactions and the zero mass spin-1 limit. We show that the forward scattering cross section for gravi…
In this short note, we propose an algorithm based on the expansions of amplitudes, the dimensional reduction technic and the differential operators, to calculate the tree level scalar-graviton amplitudes with two massive scalars, as well as the tree level scalar-photon-graviton amplitudes with two massive scalars and one photon. While applying the unitarity method, these amplitudes are necessary inputs for the calculation of post-Newtonian and post-Minkowskian expansions in general relativity for two massive charged objects interact with gravity and electromagnetic field.
The isotropy of Newton potential in noncommutative space disappears as it deforms to a momentum dependent one. We generalize the earlier derivation of such a deformed potential to the relativistic regime by calculating the 2 scalar-1 graviton scattering amplitude by taking into account the noncommutativity of space.
The cross-couplings among several Weyl gravitons (described in the free limit by a sum of linearized Weyl actions) in the presence of a scalar field are studied with the help of the deformation theory based on local BRST cohomology. Under the hypotheses of locality, smoothness of the interactions in the coupling constant, Poincare invariance, (background) Lorentz invariance, and the preservation of the number of derivatives on each field, together with the supplementary assumption that the internal metric defined by the sum of Weyl lagrangians is positively defined, we prove that there are no …
The interaction between gravitons and fermions is investigated in the teleparallel gravity. The scattering of fermions and gravitons in the weak field approximation is analyzed. The transition amplitudes of M$\varnothing$ller, Compton and new gravitational scattering are calculated.
We compute the two-point functions of the scalar and graviton in a Coleman-De Luccia type instanton background in general dimensions. These are analytically continued to Lorentzian signature. We write the correlator in a form convenient for examining the "holographic" properties of this background inspired by the work of Freivogel, Sekino, Susskind and Yeh(FSSY). Based on this, we speculate on what kind of boundary theory we would have on this background if we assume that there exists a holographic duality.
In the framework of causal perturbation theory we consider a massive scalar field coupled to gravity. In the field theoretic approach to quantum gravity (QG) we start with a massless second rank tensor field. This tensor field is then quantized in a covariant way in Minkowski space. This article deals with the adiabatic limit for graviton radiative corrections in a scattering process of two massive scalar particles. We compute the differential cross-section for bremsstrahlung processes in which one of the outgoing particles emites a graviton of low energy, a so called soft graviton. Since the …
We compute the graviton two scalar off-shell interaction vertex at tree level in Type IIB superstring theory on the pp-wave background using the light-cone string field theory formalism. We then show that the tree level vertex vanishes when all particles are on-shell and conservation of p_{+} and p_{-} are imposed. We reinforce our claim by calculating the same vertex starting from the corresponding SUGRA action expanded around the pp-wave background in the light-cone gauge.
We study corrections to the soft graviton theorem at all loop orders in Yukawa and scalar theories, both in the high energy and low energy regions. It is found that the tree level soft theorem is corrected by matrix elements coupled to the Riemann curvature tensor of linearized gravity. Further corrections appear in the high energy region and we develop a power counting technique to classify all such loop corrections according to their order of magnitude. This leads to the construction of factorized contributions to the soft theorem, to which we apply an analysis analogous to Low's theorem bas…
We study five-dimensional solutions to Einstein equations coupled to a scalar field. Bounce-type solutions for the scalar field are associated with AdS_5 spaces with smooth warp functions. Gravitons are dynamically localized in this framework in analogy to the Randall-Sundrum solution whereas, a bulk fermion gives rise to a single chiral zero mode localized at the bounce. Additional bulk scalar fields are incorporated in this picture. The dilaton, as a bulk scalar leads, through its coupling, to localized gauge boson fields, something that holds also in the case that the bounce system is repla…
We derive the Hamiltonian describing Pauli-Fierz massive gravitons on a flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) cosmology in a particular, non-generic effective field theory. The cosmological evolution is driven by a scalar field Phi with an arbitrary potential V(Phi). The model contains two coupled scalar modes, corresponding to the fluctuations of Phi and to the propagating scalar component of the Pauli-Fierz graviton. In order to preserve the full gauge invariance of the massless version of the theory, both modes have to be taken into account. We canonically normalize the Hamiltonian and gene…
Brane world models with a non-minimally coupled bulk scalar field have been studied recently. In this paper we consider metric fluctuations around an arbitrary gravity-scalar background solution, and we show that the corresponding spectrum includes a localized zero mode which strongly depends on the profile of the background scalar field. For a special class of solutions, with a warp factor of the RS form, we solve the linearized Einstein equations, for a point-like mass source on the brane, by using the brane bending formalism. We see that general relativity on the brane is recovered only if …
We study massive graviton propagations of scalar, vector, and tensor modes in the deformed Hořava-Lifshitz gravity by introducing Lorentz-violating mass term. It turns out that vector and tensor modes are massively propagating on the Minkowski spacetime background. However, adding the mass term does not cure a ghost instability in the Hořava scalar.
We construct two kinds of model exhibiting Higgs mechanism for gravitons in potentials of scalar fields. One class of the model is based on a potential which is a generic function of the induced internal metric $H^{AB}$, and the other involves a potential which is a generic function of the usual metric tensor $g_{μν}$ and the induced curved metric $Y_{μν}$. In the both models, we derive conditions on the scalar potential in such a way that gravitons acquire mass in a flat Minkowski space-time without non-unitary propagating modes in the process of spontaneous symmetry breaking of diffeomorphis…
The effects of vacuum polarization arising from loops of massive scalar particles on graviton propagation in curved space are considered. Physically, they are due to curvature induced tidal forces acting on the cloud of virtual scalar particles surrounding the graviton. The effects are tractable in a WKB and large mass limit and the results can be written as an effective refractive index for the graviton modes with both a real and imaginary part. The imaginary part of the refractive index is a curvature induced contribution to the wavefunction renormalization of the graviton in real affine tim…
We consider a way of eliminating the unwanted scalar graviton from Horava-Lifshitz gravity. That is achieved via introduction of certain additional constraints. We perform canonical analysis of both projectable and non-projectable versions of the theory. We obtain the structure of constraints in each case, and analyze its dependence on the values of the coupling constants involved in the additional constraints. In the non-projectable theory, the scalar graviton is absent when the coupling constants have certain values, while for other values the scalar graviton appears. The projectable theory …
The CHY formula which describes an $n$-point tree level scattering amplitude for scalars, gluons or gravitons in arbitrary dimension [22], is used to prove the sub-sub-leading soft- graviton theorem recently proposed by Cachazo and Strominger [13].
Using the CHY-formalism and its extension to a double cover we provide covariant expressions for tree-level amplitudes with two massive scalar legs and an arbitrary number of gravitons in D dimensions. Using unitarity methods, such amplitudes are needed inputs for the computation of post-Newtonian and post-Minkowskian expansions in classical general relativity.
In this talk we review the work in [1,2,3] where we have studied the applicability of the color-kinematics duality to the scattering of two distinguishable scalar matter particles with one gluon emission in QCD, or one graviton emission in Einstein gravity. We have shown that the duality works well in the Regge limit under two different extensions of the gauge theory: the introduction of a new scalar contact interaction and the relaxation of the distinguishability of the scalars. Both modifications correspond to theories obtained by dimensional reduction from higher-dimensional pure gauge theo…
Quantum gravity coupled to scalar massive matter fields is investigated within the framework of causal perturbation theory. One-loop calculations include matter loop graviton self-energy and matter self-energy and yield ultraviolet finite and cutoff-free expressions. Perturbative gauge invariance to second order implies the usual Slavnov-Ward identities for the graviton self-energy in the loop graph sector and generates the correct quartic graviton-matter interaction in the tree graph sector. The mass zero case is also discussed.
We investigate propagations of graviton and additional scalar on four-dimensional anti de Sitter (AdS$_4$) space using $f(R)$ gravity models with external sources. It is shown that there is the van Dam-Veltman-Zakharov (vDVZ) discontinuity in $f(R)$ gravity models because $f(R)$ gravity implies GR with additional scalar. This indicates a difference between general relativity and $f(R)$ gravity clearly.
In this note we explicitly compute the graviton exchange graph for scalar fields with arbitrary conformal dimension Δin arbitrary spacetime dimension d. This results in an analytical function in Δas well as in d.
We study the imprint of a massive scalar particle on cosmological correlation functions, and suggest the way to determine the mass of the newly introduced particle, which is expected to be around 10^14 GeV. After reviewing the basic theory by Maldacena and the effective field theory (EFT) of inflation by Cheung et al., we apply these two theories to construct new couplings of a massive scalar field with primordial fluctuations including an arbitrary number of gravitons. We compute some correlation functions including these couplings in the soft-graviton limit. We show that when the number of s…
We examine the scalar sector of the covariant graviton two-point function in de Sitter spacetime. This sector consists of the pure-trace part and another part described by a scalar field. We show that it does not contribute to two-point functions of gauge-invariant quantities. We also demonstrate that the long-distance growth present in some gauges is absent in this sector for a wide range of gauge parameters.
Primordial inflation results in the production of a vast ensemble of highly infrared, massless, minimally coupled scalars. We use a recent fully renormalized computation of the one loop contribution to the graviton self-energy from these scalars to show that they have no effect on the propagation of dynamical gravitons. Our computation motivates a conjecture for the first correction to the vacuum state wave functional of gravitons. We comment as well on performing the same analysis for the more interesting contribution from inflationary gravitons, and on inferring one loop corrections to the f…
We obtain the leading order interaction between the graviton and the neutral scalar boson in the context of noncommutative field theory. Our approach makes use of the Ward identity associated with the invariance under a subgroup of symplectic diffeomorphisms.
Recently Horava proposed a renormalizable gravity theory with higher derivatives by abandoning the Lorenz invariance in UV. But there have been confusions regarding the extra scalar graviton mode and the consistency of the Horava model. I reconsider these problems and show that, in the Minkowski vacuum background, the scalar graviton mode can be consistency decoupled from the usual tensor graviton modes by imposing the (local) Hamiltonian as well as the momentum constraints.
Any field, even if it lives in a completely hidden sector, interacts with the visible sector at least via the gravitational interaction. In this paper, we show that a scalar field in such a hidden sector generically couples to the quadratic curvature via dimension five operators, i.e., $ϕR^2$, $ϕR^{μν} R_{μν}$, $ϕR_{μνρσ} R^{μνρσ}$, $ϕR_{μνρσ} \tilde R^{μνρσ}$, because they can emerge if there exist particles heavier than it. We derive these scalar couplings to the quadratic curvature by integrating out heavy particles in a systematic manner. Such couplings are of phenomenological interest sin…
We study graviton-graviton scattering in partial-wave amplitudes after unitarizing their Born terms. In order to apply S-matrix techniques, based on unitarity and analyticity, we introduce an S-matrix associated to this resummation that is free of infrared divergences. This is achieved by removing the diverging phase factor calculated by Weinberg that multiplies the S matrix, and that stems from the virtual infrared gravitons. A scalar graviton-graviton resonance with vacuum quantum numbers (J^{PC}=0^{++}) is obtained as a pole in the nonperturbative S-wave amplitude, which we call the {\it gr…
I consider a simple model where the graviton mass and the cosmological constant depend on a scalar field with appropriate couplings and I calculate the graviton propagator and the resulting effective potential for the scalar field in order to examine issues of stability and symmetry breaking.
We study the bending of gravitons that pass near a massive object like the Sun, using scattering amplitudes in which the Sun is represented by a massive scalar particle. Our results complete previous work on the bending angles of massless spin-0, spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ and spin-1 particles, and provides more evidence for the violation of the equivalence principle at the quantum level, in the sense that the quantum corrections to bending angles for massless particles with different spins are different. We provide a universal expression for the bending angle in terms of coefficients of triangle and …
We use dimensional regularization to evaluate the one loop contribution to the graviton self-energy from a massless, minimally coupled scalar on a locally de Sitter background. For noncoincident points our result agrees with the stress tensor correlators obtained recently by Perez-Nadal, Roura and Verdaguer. We absorb the ultraviolet divergences using the $R^2$ and $C^2$ counterterms first derived by 't Hooft and Veltman, and we take the $D=4$ limit of the finite remainder. The renormalized result is expressed as the sum of two transverse, 4th order differential operators acting on nonlocal, d…
We use a simplified formalism to re-compute the single graviton loop contribution to the self-mass of a massless, conformally coupled scalar on de Sitter background which was originally made by Boran, Kahya and Park [1-3]. Our result resolves the problem with the flat space correspondence limit that was pointed out by Fröb [4]. We discuss how this computation will be used in a long-term project to purge the linearized effective field equation of gauge dependence.
The existing equivalence between (generalized) BMS Ward identities with leading and subleading soft graviton theorems is extended to the case where the scattering particles are massive scalars. By extending the action of generalized BMS group off null infinity at late times, we show that there is a natural action of such group not only on the radiative data at null infinity but also on the scattering data of the massive scalar field. This leads to a formulation of Ward identities associated to the generalized BMS group when the scattering states are massive scalars or massless gravitons and we…
We exploit a recent computation of one graviton loop corrections to the self-mass [1] to quantum-correct the field equation for a massless, conformally coupled scalar on a de Sitter background. With the obvious choice for the finite part of the $R^2 ϕ^2$ counterterm, we find that neither plane wave mode functions nor the response to a point source acquires large infrared logarithms. However, we do find a decaying logarithmic correction to the mode function and a short distance logarithmic running of the potential in addition to the power-law effect inherited from flat space.
We consider an extension of the Hořava-Lifshitz gravity with extra conformal symmetry by introducing a scalar field with higher order curvature terms. Relaxing the exact local Weyl symmetry, we construct an action with three free parameters which breaks local anisotropic Weyl symmetry but still preserves residual global Weyl symmetry. At low energies, it reduces to a Lorentz-violating scalar-tensor gravity. With a constant scalar field background and particular choices of the parameters, it reduces to the Hořava-Lifshitz (HL) gravity, but any perturbation from these particular configurations p…
Using the non-Abelian action for coincident Type IIB gravitational waves proposed in hep-th/0303183 we show that giant gravitons in the AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4 background can be described in terms of coincident waves expanding into a fuzzy cylinder, spanned by two embedding scalars and one worldvolume scalar. This fuzzy cylinder has dipole and magnetic moments with respect to the 2-form and 6-form potentials of the background, and can be interpreted as a bound state of D1-branes and D5-branes (wrapped on the 4-torus) wrapped around the basis of the cylinder. We show the exact agreement between this …
We study the dynamics of a BPS D3-brane wrapped on a three-sphere in AdS_5 x L, a so-called dual giant graviton, where L is a Sasakian five-manifold. The phase space of these configurations is the symplectic cone X over L, and geometric quantisation naturally produces a Hilbert space of L^2-normalisable holomorphic functions on X, whose states are dual to scalar chiral BPS operators in the dual superconformal field theory. We define classical and quantum partition functions and relate them to earlier mathematical constructions by the authors and S.-T. Yau, hep-th/0603021. In particular, a Sasa…
The Einstein-Hilbert Lagrangian for gravity is non-renormalizable at loop level. However, it can be treated in the effective field theory framework which means that gravity as an effective theory can be renormalized when a proper expansion of the effective Lagrangian is made. At the same time, the Feynman rules for gravity are very complicated, although the resulting amplitudes do not have the same complications. Therefore, in this thesis we want to simplify the Feynman rules as much as possible by using the most general parameterized gauge condition, adding all possible parameterized total de…
We compute the tree-level potential between two parallel $p$-branes due to the exchange of scalars, gravitons and $(p+1)$-forms. In the case of BPS membranes in 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ supergravity, this provides an interesting reinterpretation of the classical Cremmer et al. formula for the F-term scalar potential in terms of scalar, graviton and 3-form exchange. In this way, we present a correspondence between the scalar potential at every point in scalar field space and a system of two interacting BPS membranes. This could potentially lead to interesting implications for the swampland program by…
In a recent note we presented a compact formula for the complete tree-level S-matrix of pure Yang-Mills and gravity theories in arbitrary spacetime dimension. In this paper we show that a natural formulation also exists for a massless colored cubic scalar theory. In Yang-Mills, the formula is an integral over the space of n marked points on a sphere and has as integrand two factors. The first factor is a combination of Parke-Taylor-like terms dressed with U(N) color structures while the second is a Pfaffian. The S-matrix of a U(N)xU(N') cubic scalar theory is obtained by simply replacing the P…
In this note we study the linear dynamics of scalar graviton in a de Sitter background in the infrared limit of the healthy extension of Hořava-Lifshitz gravity with the dynamical critical exponent $z=3$. Both our analytical and numerical results show that the non-zero Fourier modes of scalar graviton oscillate with an exponentially damping amplitude on the sub-horizon scale, while on the super-horizon scale, the phases are frozen and they approach to some asymptotic values. In addition, as the case of the non-zero modes on super-horizon scale, the zero mode also initially decays exponentially…
A Higgs mechanism for gravity is presented, where four scalars with global Lorentz symmetry are employed. We show that in the broken symmetry phase a graviton absorbs all scalars and become massive spin 2 particle with five degrees of freedom. The resulting theory is unitary and free of ghosts.
We compute graviton scattering amplitudes in M-theory using Feynman rules for a scalar particle coupled to gravity in eleven dimensions. The processes that we consider describe the single graviton exchange and the double graviton exchange, that in M(atrix) theory correspond to the $v^4/r^7$- and $v^6/r^{14}$-term respectively. We further show that the $ v^6/r^{14}$-term appearing in M(atrix) theory at two-loops can be obtained from the covariant eleven-dimensional four-graviton amplitude. Finally, we calculate the $v^8/r^{18}$-term appearing at two-loops in M(atrix) theory. It has been previou…
In conformally flat background geometries the long wavelength gravitons can be described in the fluid approximation and they induce scalar fluctuations both during inflation and in the subsequent radiation-dominated epoch. While this effect is minute and suppressed for a de Sitter stage of expansion, the fluctuations of the energy-momentum pseudo-tensor of the graviton fluid lead to curvature perturbations that increase with time all along the post-inflationary evolution. An explicit calculation of these effects is presented for a standard thermal history and it is shown that the growth of the…
We confirm the recent claims that, in the infrared limit of Hořava-Lifshitz gravity, the scalar graviton becomes a ghost if the sound speed squared is positive on the flat de Sitter and Minkowski background. In order to avoid the ghost and tame the instability, the sound speed squared should be negative and very small, which means that the flow parameter $λ$ should be very close to its General Relativity (GR) value. We calculate the cubic interactions for the scalar graviton which are shown to have a similar structure with those of the curvature perturbation in k-inflation models. The higher o…
In this follow up paper, we calculate higher point tree level graviton Witten diagrams in AdS$_4$ via bulk perturbation theory. We show that by rearranging the bulk to bulk graviton propagators, the calculations effectively reduce to the computation of a scalar factor. Analogous to the amplitudes for vector boson interactions we computed in the previous paper, scalar factors for the graviton exchange diagrams also become relatively simple when written in momentum space. We explicitly calculate higher point correlators and discuss how this momentum space formalism makes flat space and collinear…
