Brane world models with a non-minimally coupled bulk scalar field have been studied recently. In this paper we consider metric fluctuations around an arbitrary gravity-scalar background solution, and we show that the corresponding spectrum includes a localized zero mode which strongly depends on the profile of the background scalar field. For a special class of solutions, with a warp factor of the RS form, we solve the linearized Einstein equations, for a point-like mass source on the brane, by using the brane bending formalism. We see that general relativity on the brane is recovered only if we impose restrictions on the parameter space of the models under consideration.
The isotropy of Newton potential in noncommutative space disappears as it deforms to a momentum dependent one. We generalize the earlier derivation of such a deformed potential to the relativistic regime by calculating the 2 scalar-1 graviton scattering amplitude by taking into account the noncommutativity of space.
We consider an dS_4 brane embedded in a five-dimensional bulk with a positive, vanishing or negative bulk cosmological constant and derive the localized graviton spectrum that consists of a normalizable zero-mode separated by a gap from a continuum of massive states. We estimate the massive sector contribution to the static potential at short distances and find that only in the case of a negative bulk cosmological constant there is a range, determined by the effective four-dimensional and the bulk cosmological constants, where the conventional Newton law is valid.
Theoretical data obtained from physically sensible field and string theory models suggest that gravitational Effective Field Theories (EFTs) live on islands that are tiny compared to current general bounds determined from unitarity, causality, crossing symmetry, and a good high-energy behavior. In this work, we present explicit perturbative and nonperturbative $2 \to 2$ graviton scattering amplitudes and their associated low-energy expansion in spacetime dimensions $D\geq 4$ to support this notion. Our new results include a first nonperturbative example consisting of a $D=4$, $\mathcal{N}=1$ s…
We consider the quantization of the massless minimally coupled scalar field in de Sitter spacetime. The no-boundary Euclidean prescription naturally picks out the de Sitter invariant vacuum state of Kirsten and Garriga. We extend Strominger's dS/CFT correspondence to this case which allows us to interpret the massless field in terms of a Euclidean CFT. The extension is non-trivial and requires careful treatment of the zero mode. Since the graviton is massless, this work may also be considered a step towards a theory of gravity in de Sitter space.
Recently it was shown that NCOS theories are part of a ten-dimensional theory known as Non-relativistic Wound string theory. We clarify the sense in which gravity is present in this theory. We show that Wound string theory contains exceptional unwound strings, including a graviton, which mediate the previously discovered instantaneous long-range interactions, but are negligible as asymptotic states. Unwound strings also provide the expected collective coordinates for the transverse D-branes in the theory. These and other results are shown to follow both from a direct analysis of the effect of …
In this work we study a scenario with a warped 5D smooth braneworld with 4D Minkowski geometry builded from bulk scalar matter non-minimally coupled to gravity with an additional Gauss-Bonnet term. We present exact solutions for the full braneworld configuration in contrast to previous results where only approximate solutions were constructed due to the highly non-linear character of the relevant differential equations. These solutions allow us to study the necessary conditions for the finiteness of the 4D Planck mass and additionally, enables us to perform a more rigorous analysis of 4D gravi…
We argue that if the Newtonian gravitational field of a body can mediate entanglement with another body, then it should also be possible for the body producing the Newtonian field to entangle directly with on-shell gravitons. Our arguments are made by revisiting a gedankenexperiment previously analyzed by Belenchia et al., which showed that a quantum superposition of a massive body requires both quantized gravitational radiation and local vacuum fluctuations of the spacetime metric in order to avoid contradictions with complementarity and causality. We provide a precise and rigorous descriptio…
In this short note, we propose an algorithm based on the expansions of amplitudes, the dimensional reduction technic and the differential operators, to calculate the tree level scalar-graviton amplitudes with two massive scalars, as well as the tree level scalar-photon-graviton amplitudes with two massive scalars and one photon. While applying the unitarity method, these amplitudes are necessary inputs for the calculation of post-Newtonian and post-Minkowskian expansions in general relativity for two massive charged objects interact with gravity and electromagnetic field.
Many experiments have recently been proposed to test whether non-relativistic gravitational interactions can generate entanglement. In this note, I consider the extent to which these experiments can test if the graviton exists. Assuming unitarity and Lorentz invariance of the $S$-matrix, I demonstrate that this "Newtonian entanglement" requires the existence of massless bosons, universally coupled to mass, in the Hilbert space of low-energy scattering states. These bosons could be the usual spin-2 gravitons, but in principle there are other possibilities like spin-0 scalar gravitons. I suggest…
In this paper, we consider Einstein gravity coupled to a vector field, either minimally or non-minimally, together with a vector potential of the type $V=2Λ_0+\ft 12 m^2 A^2+γ_4 A^4$. For a simpler non-minimally coupled theory with $Λ_0=m=γ_4=0$, we obtain both extremal and non-extremal black hole solutions that are asymptotic to Minkowski space-times. We study the global properties of the solutions and derive the first law of thermodynamics using Wald formalism. We find that the thermodynamical first laws of the extremal black holes are modified by a one form associated with the vector field.…
In the two-body scattering problem in general relativity, we study the final graviton particle distribution using a perturbative approach. We compute the mean, the variance and the factorial moments of the distribution from the expectation value of the graviton number operator in the KMOC formalism. For minimally coupled scalar particles, the leading deviation from the Poissonian distribution is given by the unitarity cut involving the six-point tree amplitude with the emission of two gravitons. We compute this amplitude in two independent ways. First, we use an extension of the Cheung-Remmen …
We give the Lagrangian formulation of a generic non-minimally extended Einstein-Maxwell theory with an action that is linear in the curvature and quadratic in the electromagnetic field. We derive the coupled field equations by a first order variational principle using the method of Lagrange multipliers. We look for solutions describing plane-fronted Einstein-Maxwell waves with parallel rays. We give a family of exact solutions associated with a partially massless spin-2 photon and a partially massive spin-2 graviton.
Graviton pairing and destruction of these pairs under collisions with bodies may lead to the Newtonian attraction. It opens us a new way to a very-low-energy quantum gravity model. In the model by the author, cosmological redshifts are caused by interactions of photons with gravitons of the background. Non-forehead collisions with gravitons lead to an additional relaxation of any photonic flux. Total galaxy number counts/redshift and galaxy number counts/magnitude relations are computed and found to be in a good agreement with galaxy observations.
We have found the graviton contribution to the one-loop quantum correction to the Newton law. This correction results in interaction decreasing with distance as 1/r^3 and is dominated numerically by the graviton contribution. The previous calculations of this contribution to the discussed effect are demonstrated to be incorrect.
We present new relations for scattering amplitudes of color ordered gluons, massive quarks and scalars minimally coupled to gravity. Tree-level amplitudes of arbitrary matter and gluon multiplicities involving one graviton are reduced to partial amplitudes in QCD or scalar QCD. The obtained relations are a direct generalization of the recently found Einstein-Yang-Mills relations. The proof of the new relation employs a simple diagrammatic argument trading the graviton-matter couplings to an `upgrade' of a gluon coupling with a color-kinematic replacement rule enforced. The use of the Melia-Joh…
Using relationships between open and closed strings, we present a construction of tree-level scattering amplitudes for gravitons minimally coupled to matter in terms of gauge theory partial amplitudes. In particular, we present examples of amplitudes with gravitons coupled to vectors or to a single fermion pair. We also present two examples with massive graviton exchange, as would arise in the presence of large compact dimensions. The gauge charges are represented by flavors of dynamical scalars or fermions. This also leads to an unconventional decomposition of color and kinematics in gauge th…
Primordial inflation results in the production of a vast ensemble of highly infrared, massless, minimally coupled scalars. We use a recent fully renormalized computation of the one loop contribution to the graviton self-energy from these scalars to show that they have no effect on the propagation of dynamical gravitons. Our computation motivates a conjecture for the first correction to the vacuum state wave functional of gravitons. We comment as well on performing the same analysis for the more interesting contribution from inflationary gravitons, and on inferring one loop corrections to the f…
We consider Einstein gravity with the addition of $R^2$ and $R^{μν} R_{μν}$ interactions in the context of effective field theory, and the corresponding scattering amplitudes of gravitons and minimally-coupled heavy scalars. First, we recover the known fact that graviton amplitudes are the same as in Einstein gravity. Then we show that all amplitudes with two heavy scalars and an arbitrary number of gravitons are also not affected by these interactions. We prove this by direct computations, using field redefinitions known from earlier applications in string theory, and with a combination of fa…
The four-dimensional Minkowski space-time is considered as a three-brane embedded in five dimensions, using solutions of five-dimensional supergravity. These backgrounds have a string theoretical interpretation in terms of D3-brane distributions. By studying linear fluctuations of the graviton we find a zero-mode representing the massless graviton in four-dimensional space-time. The novelty of our models is that the graviton spectrum has a genuine mass gap (independent of the position of the world-brane) above the zero-mode or it is discrete. Hence, an effective four-dimensional theory on a br…
We analyze the single subleading soft graviton theorem in $(d+1)$ dimensions under compactification on $S^1$. This produces the single soft theorems for the graviton, vector and scalar fields in $d$ dimension. For the compactification of $11$-dimensional supergravity theory, this gives the soft factorization properties of the single graviton, dilaton and RR 1-form fields in type IIA string theory in ten dimensions. For the case of the soft vector field, we also explicitly check the result obtained from compactification by computing the amplitudes with external massive spin two and massless fin…
We derive a noncovariant but simple representation for the self-energy of a conformally transformed graviton field on the cosmological patch of de Sitter. Our representation involves four structure functions, as opposed to the two that would be necessary for a manifestly de Sitter invariant representation. We work out what the four structure functions are for the one loop correction due to a massless, minimally coupled scalar. And we employ the result to work out what happens to dynamical gravitons.
In this work, we derive an expression for the correction in the Newton's law of gravitation due to the gravitational Kaluza-Klein states in a general thick string-like braneworld scenario in six dimensions. In order to analyze corrections to Newton's law we study the gravity fluctuations in a 3-brane placed in a transverse resolved conifold and use suitable numerical methods to attain the massive spectrum and the corresponding eigenfunctions. Such braneworld model has a resolution parameter which removes the conical singularity. The correction has an exponentially suppressed mass term and depe…
Using the CHY-formalism and its extension to a double cover we provide covariant expressions for tree-level amplitudes with two massive scalar legs and an arbitrary number of gravitons in D dimensions. Using unitarity methods, such amplitudes are needed inputs for the computation of post-Newtonian and post-Minkowskian expansions in classical general relativity.
We construct the graviton propagator on de Sitter background in exact de Donder gauge. We prove that it must break de Sitter invariance, just like the propagator of the massless, minimally coupled scalar. Our explicit solutions for its two scalar structure functions preserve spatial homogeneity and isotropy so that the propagator can be used within the larger context of inflationary cosmology, however, it is simple to alter the residual symmetry. Because our gauge condition is de Sitter invariant (although no solution for the propagator can be) renormalization should be simpler using this prop…
We use dimensional regularization to evaluate the one loop contribution to the graviton self-energy from a massless, minimally coupled scalar on a locally de Sitter background. For noncoincident points our result agrees with the stress tensor correlators obtained recently by Perez-Nadal, Roura and Verdaguer. We absorb the ultraviolet divergences using the $R^2$ and $C^2$ counterterms first derived by 't Hooft and Veltman, and we take the $D=4$ limit of the finite remainder. The renormalized result is expressed as the sum of two transverse, 4th order differential operators acting on nonlocal, d…
Using graviton correlator on deSitter (dS) brane in 5d AdS or dS bulk we calculate the four-dimensional Newton potential. For flat brane in AdS bulk the Randall-Sundrum result is recovered. For flat brane in dS bulk the sign of subleading ($1/r^3$) term in Newton potential is negative if compare with AdS bulk. In accordance with dS/CFT correspondence this indicates that dual CFT should be non-unitary (for example, higher derivative conformal theory).
We discuss the renormalization of the Newton constant due to fields of various spin $s$. We first briefly review the cases of $s=0, \, 1/2, \, 1,\, 3/2$ already discussed in the literature and notice the appearance of the well-known contact terms for the vector bosons. We then extend this discussion of the contact terms to massive vector fields, $p$-forms and to the case of spin $s=2$ particles (gravitons). We observe that, in general, the contact terms originate from the fields which mediate the interactions (such as vector gauge bosons and gravitons). We then discuss entanglement entropy and…
We propose a scenario that can naturally explain the observed dark matter-baryon ratio in the context of bimetric theory with a chameleon field. We introduce two additional gravitational degrees of freedom, the massive graviton and the chameleon field, corresponding to dark matter and dark energy, respectively. The chameleon field is assumed to be non-minimally coupled to dark matter, i.e., the massive graviton, through the graviton mass terms. We find that the dark matter-baryon ratio is dynamically adjusted to the observed value due to the energy transfer by the chameleon field. As a result,…
We employ the curvature expansion of the quantum effective action for gravity-matter systems to construct graviton-mediated scattering amplitudes for non-minimally coupled scalar fields in a Minkowski background. By design, the formalism parameterises all quantum corrections to these processes and is manifestly gauge-invariant. The conditions resulting from UV-finiteness, unitarity, and causality are analysed in detail and it is shown by explicit construction that the quantum effective action provides sufficient room to meet these structural requirements without introducing non-localities or h…
We study the renormalized energy-momentum tensor of gravitons in a de Sitter space-time. After canonically quantizing only the physical degrees of freedom, we adopt the standard adiabatic subtraction used for massless minimally coupled scalar fields as a regularization procedure and find that the energy density of gravitons in the E(3) invariant vacuum is proportional to H^4, where H is the Hubble parameter, but with a positive sign. According to this result the scalar expansion rate, which is gauge invariant in de Sitter space-time, is increased by the fluctuations. This implies that graviton…
We treat quantum creation of gravitons by small scale factor oscillations around the average of an expanding universe. Such oscillations can arise in standard general relativity due to oscillations of a homogeneous, minimally coupled scalar field. They can also arise in modified gravity theories with a term proportional to the square of the Ricci scalar in the gravitational action. The graviton wave equation is different in the two cases, leading to somewhat different creation rates. Both cases are treated using a perturbative method due to Birrell and Davies, involving an expansion in a confo…

We calculate the one loop graviton vacuum polarization induced by a massless, nonminimally coupled scalar field on Minkowski background. We make use of the Schwinger-Keldysh formalism, which allows us to study time dependent phenomena. As an application we compute the leading quantum correction to the Newtonian potential of a point particle. The novel aspect of the calculation is the use of the Schwinger-Keldysh formalism, within which we calculate the time transients induced by switching on of the graviton-scalar coupling.
We consider de Sitter brane-world motivated by dS/CFT correspondence where both bulk and brane are de Sitter spaces. The brane tension is fixed by holographic RG. The 4d effective action for metric perturbations and 4d graviton correlator are explicitly found. The induced values of cosmological and Newton constants are calculated. The short distance behaviour of the graviton correlator (when no brane matter presents) turns out to be significally stronger than in the case of General Relativity. It is shown that quantum brane CFT gives the dominant contribution to graviton correlator on small sc…
In this talk we consider the problem of a scalar field, non-minimally coupled to gravity, in the presence of a Brane. A number of exact solutions, for a wide range of values of the coupling parameter, are presented. The behavior and general features of these solutions are discussed. We derive solutions for the scalar field compatible with the Randall-Sundrum metric and also geometries which can accomodate a folded kink-like scalar. Analytic and numerical results are provided for the case of a Brane or for smooth geometries, where the scalar field acts as a thick Brane. We also discuss briefly …
In this work, we evaluate the Shannon-like entropic measure of spatially-localized functions for a five-dimensional braneworld generated by a double sine-Gordon (DSG) potential. The differential configurational entropy (DCE) has been shown in several recent works to be a configurational informational measure (CIM) that selects critical points and brings out phase transitions in confined energy models with arbitrary parameters. We select the DSG scenario because it presents an energy-degenerate spatially localized profile where the solutions to the scalar field demonstrate critical behavior tha…
We calculate the quantum corrections to the Newtonian potential induced by a massless, nonminimally coupled scalar field on Minkowski background. We make use of the graviton vacuum polarization calculated in our previous work and solve the equation of motion nonperturbatively. When written as the quantum-corrected gauge invariant Bardeen potentials, our results show that quantum effects generically antiscreen the Newtonian singularity 1/r. This result supports the point of view that gravity on (super-)Planckian scales is an asymptotically safe theory. In addition, we show that, in the presence…
We propose a mechanism to evade the Lyth bound in models of inflation. We minimally extend the conventional single-field inflation model in general relativity (GR) to a theory with non-vanishing graviton mass in the very early universe. The modification primarily affects the tensor perturbation, while the scalar and vector perturbations are the same as the ones in GR with a single scalar field at least at the level of linear perturbation theory. During the reheating stage, the graviton mass oscillates coherently and leads to resonant amplification of the primordial tensor perturbation. After r…
We obtain the full 5D graviton propagator in the Randall-Sundrum model with the Gauss-Bonnet interaction. From the decomposition of the graviton propagator on the brane, we show that localization of gravity arises in the presence of the Gauss-Bonnet term. We also obtain the metric perturbation for observers on the brane with considering the brane bending and compute the amplitude of one massless graviton exchange. For the positive definite amplitude or no ghost states, the sign of the Gauss-Bonnet coefficient should be negative in our convention, which is compatible with string amplitude compu…
We consider a theory of scalars minimally coupled to an auxiliary background metric. The theory is generally covariant and subject to the constraint of vanishing energy-momentum tensor. Eliminating the auxiliary metric leads to a reparametrization invariant, non-polynomial, metric-independent action for the scalar fields. Working in the limit of a large number of physical scalars, a composite massless spin-2 state, the graviton, was identified in previous work, in a two-into-two scalar scattering process. Here, we further explore the possibility that dynamical emergent gravity is a natural fea…
We consider single graviton loop corrections to the effective field equation of a massless, minimally coupled scalar on de Sitter background in the simplest gauge. We find a large temporal logarithm in the approach to freeze-in at late times, but no correction to the feeze-in amplitude. We also find a large spatial logarithm (at large distances) in the scalar potential generated by a point source, which can be explained using the renormalization group with one of the higher derivative counterterms regarded as a curvature-dependent field strength renormalization. We discuss how these results se…
We perform a one-loop test of the holographic interpretation of the Karch-Randall model, whereby a massive graviton appears on an AdS_4 brane in an AdS_5 bulk. Within the AdS/CFT framework, we examine the quantum corrections to the graviton propagator on the brane, and demonstrate that they induce a graviton mass in exact agreement with the Karch-Randall result. Interestingly enough, at one loop order, the spin 0, spin 1/2 and spin 1 loops contribute to the dynamically generated (mass)^2 in the same 1: 3: 12 ratio as enters the Weyl anomaly and the 1/r^3 corrections to the Newtonian gravitatio…
We consider a recently proposed class of extended teleparallel theories of gravity, which entail a scalar field which is non-minimally coupled to the torsion of a flat, metric-compatible connection. This class of scalar-torsion theories of gravity is constructed in analogy to and as a direct extension of the well-studied class of scalar-curvature gravity theories, and has various common features, such as the conformal frame freedom. For this class we determine the parametrized post-Newtonian limit, both for a massive and a massless scalar field. In the massive case, we determine the effective …
We discuss a non-relativistic contraction of massive and massless field theories minimally coupled to gravity. Using the non-relativistic limiting procedure introduced in our previous work, we (re-)derive non-relativistic field theories of massive and massless spins 0 to 3/2 coupled to torsionless Newton-Cartan backgrounds. We elucidate the relativistic origin of the Newton-Cartan central charge gauge field $m_μ$ and explain its relation to particle number conservation.
We observe that the dominant one loop contribution to the graviton propagator in the theory of N (N>>1) light scalar fields ϕ_a (with masses smaller than M_{pl}/\sqrt{N}) minimally coupled to Einstein gravity is proportional to N while that of graviton-scalar-scalar interaction vertex is N independent. We use this to argue that the coefficient of the Rϕ_a^2 term appearing at one loop level is 1/N suppressed. This observation provides a resolution to the η-problem, that the slow-roll parameter ηreceives order one quantum loop corrections for inflationary models built within the framework of sca…
We study the properties of a previously found family of thick brane configurations in a pure geometric Weyl integrable 5D space time, a non-Riemannian generalization of Kaluza-Klein (KK) theory involving a geometric scalar field. Thus the 5D theory describes gravity coupled to a self-interacting scalar field which gives rise to the structure of the thick branes. Analyzing the graviton spectrum for this class of models, we find that a particularly interesting situation arises for a special case in which the 4D graviton is separated from the KK gravitons by a mass gap. The corresponding effectiv…
We study the propagation of gravitons within 5-D supersymmetric braneworld models with a bulk scalar field. The setup considered here consists of a 5-D bulk spacetime bounded by two 4-D branes localized at the fixed points of an $S^1/Z_2$ orbifold. There is a scalar field $ϕ$ in the bulk which, provided a superpotential $W(ϕ)$, determines the warped geometry of the 5-D spacetime. This type of scenario is common in string theory, where the bulk scalar field $ϕ$ is related to the volume of small compact extra dimensions. We show that, after the moduli are stabilized by supersymmetry breaking ter…
We address the issue of whether extra dimensions could have an infinite volume and yet reproduce the effects of observable four-dimensional gravity on a brane. There is no normalizable zero-mode graviton in this case, nevertheless correct Newton's law can be obtained by exchanging bulk gravitons. This can be interpreted as an exchange of a single {\it metastable} 4D graviton. Such theories have remarkable phenomenological signatures since the evolution of the Universe becomes high-dimensional at very large scales. Furthermore, the bulk supersymmetry in the infinite volume limit might be preser…
We consider a simple abelian vector dark matter (DM) model, where {\it only} the DM $(\widetilde{X}_μ)$ couples non-minimally to the scalar curvature $(\widetilde{R})$ of the background spacetime via an operator of the form $\sim \widetilde{X}_μ\,\widetilde{X}^μ\,\widetilde{R}$. By considering the standard freeze-out scenario, we show, it is possible to probe such a non-minimally coupled DM in direct detection experiments for a coupling strength $ξ\sim\mathcal{O}\left(10^{30}\right)$ and DM mass $m_X\lesssim 55$ TeV, satisfying Planck observed relic abundance and perturbative unitarity. We als…
We analyze, within the framework of unified brane gravity, the weak-field perturbations caused by the presence of matter on a 3-brane. Although deviating from the Randall-Sundrum approach, the masslessness of the graviton is still preserved. In particular, the four-dimensional Newton force law is recovered, but serendipitously, the corresponding Newton constant is shown to be necessarily lower than the one which governs FRW cosmology. This has the potential to puzzle out cosmological dark matter. A subsequent conjecture concerning galactic dark matter follows.
This Thesis presents a study of higher dimensional brane-world models with non-factorizable geometry. It is shown that in the context of multi-brane world constructions with localized gravity the phenomenon of multi-localization is possible. When the latter scenario is realized, the KK spectrum contains special ultralight and localized KK state(s). Existence of such states give the possibility that gravitational interactions as we realize them are the net effect of the massless graviton and the special KK state(s). Models that reproduce Newtonian gravity at intermediate distances even in the a…
We propose a modified gravity theory that propagates only two local gravitational degrees of freedom and that does not have an Einstein frame. According to the classification in JCAP 01 (2019) 017 [arXiv:1810.01047 [gr-qc]], this is a type-II minimally modified gravity theory. The theory is characterized by the gravitational constant $G_{\rm N}$ and a function $V(ϕ)$ of a non-dynamical auxiliary field $ϕ$ that plays the role of dark energy. Once one fixes a homogeneous and isotropic cosmological background, the form of $V(ϕ)$ is determined and the theory no longer possesses a free parameter or…
