We present and prove a formula for the MHV scattering amplitude of n gravitons at tree level. Some of the more interesting features of the formula, which set it apart as being significantly different from many more familiar formulas, include the absence of any vestigial reference to a cyclic ordering of the gravitons--making it in a sense a truly gravitational formula, rather than a recycled Yang-Mills result, and the fact that it simultaneously manifests both S_{n-2} symmetry as well as large-z behavior that is O(1/z^2) term-by-term, without relying on delicate cancellations. The formula is seemingly related to others by an enormous simplification provided by O(n^n) iterated Schouten identities, but our proof relies on a complex analysis argument rather than such a brute force manipulation. We find that the formula has a very simple link representation in twistor space, where cancellations that are non-obvious in physical space become manifest.
In arXiv:2008.04330 it was shown that supertranslation and $\overline{SL(2,\mathbb C)}$ current algebra symmetries, corresponding to leading and subleading soft graviton theorems, are enough to determine the tree level MHV graviton scattering amplitudes. In this note we clarify the role of subsubleading soft graviton theorem in this context.
We show how the maximally helicity violating (MHV) scattering amplitudes for gravitons can be related to current correlators and vertex operators in twistor space. This is similar to what happens in Yang-Mills theory and raises the possibility of a direct twistor-string-like construction for ${\cal N}=8$ supergravity.
Two new formulas which express n-graviton MHV tree amplitudes in terms of sums of squares of n-gluon amplitudes are discussed. The first formula is derived from recursion relations. The second formula, simpler because it involves fewer permutations, is obtained from the variant of the Berends, Giele, Kuijf formula given in Arxiv:0707.1035.
We extend the Berkovits-Maldacena prescription for MHV amplitudes of the open superstring to the closed superstring, showing that in the α'=0 limit it reduces to the result of supergravity found recently by Hodges. We also verify that this prescription calculates the correct superstring tree level MHV amplitude for 4 gravitons including α' corrections.
The Cachazo-Strominger subleading soft graviton theorem for a positive helicity soft graviton is equivalent to the Ward identities for $\overline{SL(2,\mathbb C)}$ currents. This naturally gives rise to a $\overline{SL(2,\mathbb C)}$ current algebra living on the celestial sphere. The generators of the $\overline{SL(2,\mathbb C)}$ current algebra and the supertranslations, coming from a positive helicity leading soft graviton, form a closed algebra. We find that the OPE of two graviton primaries in the Celestial CFT, extracted from MHV amplitudes, is completely determined in terms of this alge…
In this paper we continue our study of the tree level MHV graviton scattering amplitudes from the point of view of celestial holography. In arXiv:2008.04330 we showed that the celestial OPE of two gravitons in the MHV sector can be written as a linear combination of $\overline{SL(2,\mathbb C)}$ current algebra and supertranslation descendants. In this note we show that the OPE is in fact manifestly invariant under the infinite dimensional Virasoro algebra as is expected for a $2$-D CFT. This is consistent with the conjecture that the holographic dual in $4$-D asymptotically flat space time is …
The MHV or CSW expansion of tree-level Yang-Mills amplitudes provides an elegant and simple way of obtaining analytic formulas for S-matrix elements. Inspired by the BCFW technique, a systematic approach to obtain the MHV expansion was introduced by Risager, using a particular complex deformation. Although it works for Yang-Mills amplitudes, Risager's technique fails to provide an MHV expansion already for Next-to-MHV gravity amplitudes with more than eleven particles, as shown by Bianchi, Elvang and Freedman in 2008. This fact implies that in this sector there is a contribution at infinity st…
We discuss the calculation of one-loop amplitudes in N=8 supergravity using MHV diagrams. In contrast to MHV amplitudes of gluons in Yang-Mills, tree-level MHV amplitudes of gravitons are not holomorphic in the spinor variables. In order to extend these amplitudes off shell, and use them as vertices to build loops, we introduce certain shifts for the spinor variables associated to the loop momenta. Using this off-shell prescription, we rederive the four-point MHV amplitude of gravitons at one loop, in complete agreement with known results. We also discuss the extension to the case of one-loop …
Recently, tree-level recursion relations for scattering amplitudes of gluons in Yang-Mills theory have been derived. In this note we propose a generalization of the recursion relations to tree-level scattering amplitudes of gravitons. We use the relations to derive new simple formulae for all amplitudes up to six gravitons. In particular, we present an explicit formula for the six graviton non-MHV amplitude. We prove the relations for MHV and next-to-MHV n-graviton amplitudes and for all eight-graviton amplitudes.
We present all-multiplicity formulae for the tree-level scattering of gluons and gravitons in the maximal helicity violating (MHV) helicity configuration, calculated in certain chiral strong fields. The strong backgrounds we consider are self-dual plane waves in gauge theory and general relativity, which are treated exactly and admit a well-defined S-matrix. The gauge theory background-coupled MHV amplitude is simply a dressed analogue of the familiar Parke-Taylor formula, but the gravitational version has non-trivial new structures due to graviton tails. Both formulae have just one residual i…
We obtain a CSW-style formalism for calculating graviton scattering amplitudes and prove its validity through the use of a special type of BCFW-like parameter shift. The procedure is illustrated with explicit examples.
As an alternative to the usual Feynman graphs, tree amplitudes in Yang-Mills theory can be constructed from tree graphs in which the vertices are tree level MHV scattering amplitudes, continued off shell in a particular fashion. The formalism leads to new and relatively simple formulas for many amplitudes, and can be heuristically derived from twistor space.
We use the twistor-string theory on the B-model of CP^{3|4} to compute the maximally helicity violating(MHV) tree amplitudes for conformal supergravitons. The correlator of a bilinear in the affine Kac-Moody current(Sugawara stress-energy tensor) can generate these amplitudes. We compare with previous results from open string version of twistor-string theory. We also compute the MHV tree amplitudes for both gravitons and gluons from the correlators between stress-energy tensor and current.
We prove the MHV vertex expansion for all tree amplitudes of N=4 SYM theory. The proof uses a shift acting on all external momenta, and we show that every N^kMHV tree amplitude falls off as 1/z^k, or faster, for large z under this shift. The MHV vertex expansion allows us to derive compact and efficient generating functions for all N^kMHV tree amplitudes of the theory. We also derive an improved form of the anti-NMHV generating function. The proof leads to a curious set of sum rules for the diagrams of the MHV vertex expansion.
New methods are introduced for the description and evaluation of tree-level gravitational scattering amplitudes. An N=7 super-symmetric recursion, free from spurious double poles, gives a more efficient method for evaluating MHV amplitudes. The recursion is naturally associated with twistor geometry, and thereby gives a new interpretation for the amplitudes. The recursion leads to new expressions for the MHV amplitudes for six and seven gravitons, simplifying their symmetry properties, and suggesting further generalization. The N=7 recursion is valid for all tree amplitudes, and we illustrate …
This article proves the cyclicity of anti-NMHV and N$^2$MHV tree amplitudes in planar N=4 SYM up to any number of external particles as an interesting application of positive Grassmannian geometry. In this proof the two-fold simplex-like structures of tree amplitudes introduced in 1609.08627 play a key role, as the cyclicity of amplitudes will induce similar simplex-like structures for the boundary generators of homological identities. For this purpose, we only need a part of all distinct boundary generators, and the relevant identities only involve BCFW-like cells. The manifest cyclic invaria…
In this paper we define, independent of theories, two discriminant matrices involving a solution to the scattering equations in four dimensions, the ranks of which are used to divide the solution set into a disjoint union of subsets. We further demonstrate, {entirely within the Cachazo-He-Yuan formalism,} that each subset of solutions gives nonzero contribution to tree-level $\text{N}^{k}\text{MHV}$ gauge/gravity amplitudes only for a specific value of $k$. Thus the solutions can be characterized by the rank of their discriminant matrices, which in turn determines the value of $k$ of the $\tex…
A simple formula is given for the n-field tree-level MHV gravitational amplitude, based on soft limit factors. It expresses the full S_n symmetry naturally, as a determinant of elements of a symmetric (n \times n) matrix.
In this paper we develop a supersymmetric version of unitarity cut method for form factors of operators from the chiral truncation of the the $\mathcal{N}=4$ stress-tensor current supermultiplet $T^{AB}$. The relation between the superform factor with supermomentum equals to zero and the logarithmic derivative of the superamplitude with respect to the coupling constant is discussed and verified at tree- and one-loop level for any MHV $n$-point ($n \geq 4$) superform factor involving operators from chiral truncation of the stress-tensor energy supermultiplet. The explicit $\mathcal{N}=4$ covari…
Over the past few decades, it has been realised that gauge theory scattering amplitudes have structures much simpler than the traditional Feynman graph driven approach would suggest. In particular, Parke and Taylor found a particularly simple expression for the tree-level amplitudes with two gluons of different helicity than the others (the so-called MHV amplitudes). Cachazo, Svrcek and Witten (CSW) devised rules for constructing tree-level amplitudes by sewing lower-valence MHV amplitudes together with scalar propagators. It was shown by Mansfield in 2005 that a canonical change of the field …
Significant progress has been made in the past year in developing new `MHV' techniques for calculating multiparticle scattering amplitudes in Yang-Mills gauge theories. Most of the work so far has focussed on applications to Quantum Chromodynamics, both at tree and one-loop level. We show how such techniques can also be applied to abelian theories such as QED, by studying the simplest tree-level multiparticle process, e^+e^- to n γ. We compare explicit results for up to n=5 photons using both the Cachazo, Svrcek and Witten `MHV rules' and the related Britto-Cachazo-Feng `recursion relation' ap…
In this talk, we review our recent work on direct evaluation of tree-level MHV amplitudes by Cachazo-He-Yuan (CHY) formula. We also investigate the correspondence between solutions to scattering equations and amplitudes in four dimensions along this line. By substituting the MHV solution of scattering equations into the integrated CHY formula, we explicitly calculate the tree-level MHV amplitudes for four dimensional Yang-Mills theory and gravity. These results naturally reproduce the Parke-Taylor and Hodges formulas. In addition, we derive a new compact formula for tree-level single-trace MHV…
We compute one-loop threshold corrections to R^4 terms in N= 5,6 supergravity vacua of Type II superstrings. We then discuss non-perturbative corrections generated by asymmetric D-brane instantons. Finally we derive generating functions for MHV amplitudes at tree level in N = 5, 6 supergravities.
We study n-point tree amplitudes of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory and N=8 supergravity for general configurations of external particles of the two theories. We construct generating functions for n-point MHV and NMHV amplitudes with general external states. Amplitudes derived from them obey SUSY Ward identities, and the generating functions characterize and count amplitudes in the MHV and NMHV sectors. The MHV generating function provides an efficient way to perform the intermediate state helicity sums required to obtain loop amplitudes from trees. The NMHV generating functions rely on the MHV-ve…
In four dimensions, a tree-level double-trace Einstein-Yang-Mills (EYM) amplitude with two negative-helicity gluons (the $(g^-,g^-)$-configuration) satisfies a symmetric spanning forest formula, which was derived from the graphic expansion rule. On another hand, in the framework of Cachazo-He-Yuan (CHY) formula, the maximally-helicity-violating (MHV) amplitudes are supported by the MHV solution of scattering equations. The relationship between the symmetric formula for double-trace amplitudes, and the MHV sector of Cachazo-He-Yuan (CHY) formula in four dimensions is still not clear. In this no…
We show that the Mellin transform of an $n$-point tree level MHV gluon scattering amplitude, also known as the celestial amplitude in pure Yang-Mills theory, satisfies a system of $(n-2)$ linear first order partial differential equations corresponding to $(n-2)$ positive helicity gluons. Although these equations closely resemble Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations for $SU(N)$ current algebra there is also an additional "correction" term coming from the subleading soft gluon current algebra. These equations can be used to compute the leading term in the gluon-gluon OPE on the celestial sphere. Sim…
Pasterski, Shao and Strominger have recently proposed that massless scattering amplitudes can be mapped to correlators on the celestial sphere at infinity via a Mellin transform. We apply this prescription to arbitrary $n$-point tree-level gluon amplitudes. The Mellin transforms of MHV amplitudes are given by generalized hypergeometric functions on the Grassmannian $Gr(4,n)$, while generic non-MHV amplitudes are given by more complicated Gelfand $A$-hypergeometric functions.
In the gauge-theoretic formulation of gravity the cubic vertex becomes simple enough for some graviton scattering amplitudes to be computed using Berends-Giele-type recursion relations. We present such a computation for the current with all same helicity on-shell gravitons. Once the recursion relation is set up and low graviton number cases are worked out, a natural guess for the solution in terms of a sum over trees presents itself readily. The solution can also be described either in terms of the half-soft function familiar from the 1998 paper by Bern, Dixon, Perelstein and Rozowsky or as a …
We argue that generic one-loop scattering amplitudes in supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories can be computed equivalently with MHV diagrams or with Feynman diagrams. We first present a general proof of the covariance of one-loop non-MHV amplitudes obtained from MHV diagrams. This proof relies only on the local character in Minkowski space of MHV vertices and on an application of the Feynman Tree Theorem. We then show that the discontinuities of one-loop scattering amplitudes computed with MHV diagrams are precisely the same as those computed with standard methods. Furthermore, we analyse colline…
It was proposed in hep-th/0403047 that all tree amplitudes in pure Yang-Mills theory can be constructed from known MHV amplitudes. We apply this approach for calculating tree amplitudes of gauge fields and fermions and find agreement with known results. The formalism amounts to an effective scalar perturbation theory which offers a much simpler alternative to the usual Feynman diagrams in gauge theory and can be used for deriving new simple expressions for tree amplitudes. At tree level the formalism works in a generic gauge theory, with or without supersymmetry, and for a finite number of colo…
Celestial and momentum space amplitudes for massless particles are related to each other by a change of basis provided by the Mellin transform. Therefore properties of celestial amplitudes have counterparts in momentum space amplitudes and vice versa. In this paper, we study the celestial avatar of dual superconformal symmetry of $\mathcal{N}=4$ Yang-Mills theory. We also analyze various differential equations known to be satisfied by celestial $n$-point tree-level MHV amplitudes and identify their momentum space origins.
We show that there are remarkable simplifications when the MHV diagram formalism for N=4 super Yang-Mills is reformulated in momentum twistor space. The vertices are replaced by unity while each propagator becomes a dual superconformal `R-invariant' whose arguments may be read off from the diagram. The momentum twistor MHV rules generate a formula for the full, all-loop planar integrand of the super Yang-Mills S-matrix that is manifestly dual superconformally invariant up to the choice of a reference twistor. We give a general proof of this reformulation and illustrate its use by computing the…
We show how all non-MHV tree-level amplitudes in 0 =< N =< 4 gauge theories can be obtained directly from the known MHV amplitudes using the scalar graph approach of Cachazo, Svrcek and Witten. Generic amplitudes are given by sums of inequivalent scalar diagrams with MHV vertices. The novel feature of our method is that after the `Feynman rules' for scalar diagrams are used, together with a particular choice of the reference spinor, no further helicity-spinor algebra is required to convert the results into a numerically usable form. Expressions for all relevant individual diagrams are free of …
In this paper we extend our techniques, developed in a previous paper (Du, etc, JHEP 05(2016)086) for direct evaluation of arbitrary $n$-point tree-level MHV amplitudes in 4d Yang-Mills and gravity theory using the Cachazo-He-Yuan (CHY) formalism, to the 4d Einstein-Yang-Mills (EYM) theory. Any single-trace color-ordered $n$-point tree-level MHV amplitude in EYM theory, obtained by a direct evaluation of the CHY formula, is of an elegant factorized form of a Parke-Taylor factor and a Hodges determinant, much simpler and more compact than the existing formulas in the literature. We prove that o…
We explore further the notion of cluster adjacency, focussing on non-MHV amplitudes. We extend the notion of adjacency to the BCFW decomposition of tree-level amplitudes. Adjacency controls the appearance of poles, both physical and spurious, in individual BCFW terms. We then discuss how this notion of adjacency is connected to the adjacency already observed at the level of symbols of scattering amplitudes which controls the appearance of branch cut singularities. Poles and symbols become intertwined by cluster adjacency and we discuss the relation of this property to the $\bar{Q}$-equation wh…
We incorporate all gauge-invariant local composite operators into the twistor-space formulation of N=4 SYM theory, detailing and expanding on ideas we presented recently in arXiv:1603.04471. The vertices for these operators contain infinitely many terms and we show how they can be constructed by taking suitable derivatives of a light-like Wilson loop in twistor space and shrinking it down to a point. In particular, these vertices directly yield the tree-level MHV super form factors of all composite operators in N=4 SYM theory.
Using newly proposed BCF/BCFW recursion relations, compact formulas are obtained for tree-level n-gluon amplitudes of helicity structure --++...+. We then make an extension of these recursion relations to include fermions of multi-flavors, from which MHV and \bar{MHV} amplitudes are reproduced. We also calculate non-MHV amplitudes of processes with two fermions and four gluons. Results thus obtained are equivalent to those obtained by extended CSW prescriptions, and those by conventional field theory calculations.
We consider the multi-collinear limit of multi-gluon QCD amplitudes at tree level. We use the MHV rules for constructing colour ordered tree amplitudes and the general collinear factorization formula to derive timelike splitting functions that are valid for specific numbers of negative helicity gluons and an arbitrary number of positive helicity gluons (or vice versa). As an example we present new results describing the collinear limits of up to six gluons.
We present a supersymmetric generalization of the MHV vertex expansion for all tree amplitudes in N=4 SYM theory. In addition to the choice of a reference spinor, this super MHV vertex expansion also depends on four reference Grassmann parameters. We demonstrate that a significant fraction of diagrams in the expansion vanishes for a judicious choice of these Grassmann parameters, which simplifies the computation of amplitudes. Even pure-gluon amplitudes require fewer diagrams than in the ordinary MHV vertex expansion. We show that the super MHV vertex expansion arises from the recursion relati…
MHV diagrams give an efficient Feynman diagram-like formalism for calculating gauge theory scattering amplitudes on momentum space. Although they arise as the Feynman diagrams from an action on twistor space in an axial gauge, the main ingredients were previously expressed only in momentum space and momentum twistor space. Here we show how the formalism can be elegantly derived and expressed entirely in twistor space. This brings out the underlying superconformal invariance of the framework (up to the choice of a reference twistor used to define the axial gauge) and makes the twistor support t…
We identify a hidden GL(n,C) symmetry of the tree level n-point MHV gravity amplitude. Representations of this symmetry reside in an auxiliary n-space whose indices are external particle labels. Spinor helicity variables transform non-linearly under GL(n,C), but linearly under its notable subgroups, the little group and the permutation group S_n. Using GL(n,C) covariant variables, we present a new and simple formula for the MHV amplitude which can be derived solely from geometric constraints. This expression carries a huge intrinsic redundancy which can be parameterized by a pair of reference …
We give a self-contained derivation of the MHV amplitudes for gravity and use the associated twistor generating function to define a twistor action for the MHV diagram approach to gravity. Starting from a background field calculation on a spacetime with anti self-dual curvature, we obtain a simple spacetime formula for the scattering of a single, positive helicity linearized graviton into one of negative helicity. Re-expressing our integral in terms of twistor data allows us to consider a spacetime that is asymptotic to a superposition of plane waves. Expanding these out perturbatively yields …
The scattering equation formalism is a general framework for calculation of amplitudes in theories of massless particles. We provide a detailed introduction to the 4D scattering equation framework accessible to non-experts, outline current difficulties solving the equations numerically, and explain how to overcome them with a Monte Carlo algorithm. With this submission we include {\tt treeamps4dJAF}, the first publicly available {\sc Mathematica} package for calculating amplitudes by solving the scattering equations, supporting MHV analytical and N$^{k-2}$MHV numerical computations. The packag…
We initiate an exploration of on-shell functions in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM beyond the planar limit by providing compact, combinatorial expressions for all leading singularities of MHV amplitudes and showing that they can always be expressed as a positive sum of differently ordered Parke-Taylor tree amplitudes. This is understood in terms of an extended notion of positivity in $G(2,n)$, the Grassmannian of 2-planes in $n$ dimensions: a single on-shell diagram can be associated with many different "positive" regions, of which the familiar positive region associated with planar diagrams is just one …
Using the recent formula presented by He and Cachazo-Mason-Skinner for the link representation of tree-level N=8 supergravity amplitudes, we derived a CSW-like expansion for the Next-to-MHV 6- and 7-graviton amplitudes by using the global residue theorem; a technique introduced originally for Yang-Mills amplitudes. We analytically checked the equivalence of one of the CSW terms and its corresponding Risager's diagram. For the remaining 6-graviton and all 7-graviton terms, we numerically checked the agreement with Risager's expansion. We showed that the conditions for the absence of contributio…
We review two novel techniques used to calculate tree-level scattering amplitudes efficiently: MHV diagrams, and on-shell recursion relations. For the MHV diagrams, we consider applications to tree-level amplitudes and focus in particular on the N=4 supersymmetric formulation. We also briefly describe the derivation of loop amplitudes using MHV diagrams. For the recursion relations, after presenting their general proof, we discuss several applications to massless theories with and without supersymmetry, to theories with massive particles, and to graviton amplitudes in General Relativity. This …
