The origin of the Li-rich K giants is still highly debated. Here, we investigate the incidence of binarity among this family from a nine-year radial-velocity monitoring of a sample of 11 Li-rich K giants using the HERMES spectrograph attached to the 1.2m Mercator telescope. A sample of 13 non-Li-rich giants (8 of them being surrounded by dust according to IRAS, WISE, and ISO data) was monitored alongside. When compared to the binary frequency in a reference sample of 190 K giants (containing 17.4% of definite spectroscopic binaries -- SB -- and 6.3% of possible spectroscopic binaries -- SB?), the binary frequency appears normal among the Li-rich giants (2/11 definite binaries plus 2 possible binaries, or 18.2% SB + 18.2% SB?), after taking account of the small sample size through the hypergeometric probability distribution. Therefore, there appears to be no causal relationship between Li enrichment and binarity. Moreover, there is no correlation between Li enrichment and the presence of circumstellar dust, and the only correlation that could be found between Li enrichment and rapid rotation is that the most Li-enriched K giants appear to be fast-rotating stars. However, among the dusty K giants, the binary frequency is much higher (4/8 definite binaries plus 1 possible binary). The remaining 3 dusty K giants suffer from a radial-velocity jitter, as is expected for the most luminous K giants, which these are.
This study is a contribution in comprehending the role of binarity upon late stages of stellar evolution. We determine the binary status of six Galactic RV Tauri stars, namely DY Ori, EP Lyr, HP Lyr, IRAS 17038-4815, IRAS 09144-4933 and TW Cam, which are surrounded by a dusty disc. We also place them on the HR diagram, thereby establishing their evolutionary nature. All the six Galactic RV Tauri stars included in this study are binaries with orbital periods ranging between $\sim$ 650 and 1700 days and with eccentricities between 0.2 and 0.6. The mass functions range between 0.08 to 0.55 M$_\od…
Circumstellar discs are essential for high mass star formation, while multiplicity, in particular binarity, appears to be an inevitable outcome since the vast majority of massive stars (> 8 Msun) are found in binaries (up to 100%). We constrain the sizes of the dust and ionised gas (Brgamma) emission of the innermost regions towards a sample of six MYSOs, and provide high-mass binary statistics of young stars at 2-300 au scales using VLTI (GRAVITY, AMBER) observations. We determine the inner radius of the dust emission and place MYSOs with K-band measurements in a size-luminosity diagram for t…
Long secondary periods (LSPs), observed in a third of pulsating red giant stars, are the only unexplained type of large-amplitude stellar variability known at this time. Here we show that this phenomenon is a manifestation of a substellar or stellar companion orbiting the red giant star. Our investigation is based on a sample of about 16,000 well-defined LSP variables detected in the long-term OGLE photometric database of the Milky Way and Magellanic Clouds, combined with the mid-infrared data extracted from the NEOWISE-R archive. From this collection, we selected about 700 objects with stable…
Despite years of effort, the impact of central star binarity on planetary nebula formation and shaping remains unclear. This is hampered by the fact that detecting central star binarity is inherently difficult, and requires very precise observations. The fraction of planetary nebulae with binary central stars therefore remains elusive. This work presents initial results of central star analysis using data from the VST H$α$ Survey of the Southern Galactic Plane and Bulge (VPHAS+). The true central star of PN Hf 38 has been revealed, and it exhibits a 0.465$\pm$0.334 $i$ band magnitude excess, i…
Theoretical scaling relations for solar-like oscillators and red giants are widely used to estimate fundamental stellar parameters. The accuracy and precision of these relations have often been questioned in the literature, with studies often utilising binarity for model-independent validation. However, it has not been tested if the photometric effects of binarity introduce a systematic effect on the extraction of the seismic properties of the pulsating component(s). In this paper, we present an estimation of the impact of a contaminating photometric signal with a distinct background profile o…

Using the SDSS DR7 spectroscopic catalog, we searched the WISE AllWISE catalog to investigate the occurrence of warm dust, as inferred from IR excesses, around field M dwarfs (dMs). We developed SDSS/WISE color selection criteria to identify 175 dMs (from 70,841) that show IR flux greater than typical dM photosphere levels at 12 and/or 22 $μ$m, including seven new stars within the Orion OB1 footprint. We characterize the dust populations inferred from each IR excess, and investigate the possibility that these excesses could arise from ultracool binary companions by modeling combined SEDs. Our …
S106 is one of the best known bipolar HII regions, thoroughly studied and modelled at infrared, submillimeter and millimeter wavelengths, and it is one of the nearest examples of the late stages of massive star formation in which the newly formed star that ionizes it is still surrounded by vast amounts of gas and dust. However, little is known about its heavily obscured central source, S106IR. The possible binarity of the central source is investigated, which is considered to be likely given the high binarity fraction among massive stars. We have carried out visible and near-infrared photometr…
We searched for a correlation between the two anomalous properties of K giants: Li enhancement and IR excess from an unbiased survey of a large sample of RGB stars. A sample of 2000 low-mass K giants with accurate astrometry from the Hipparcos catalog was chosen for which Li abundances have been determined from low-resolution spectra. Far-infrared data were collected from the $WISE$ and $IRAS$ catalogs. To probe the correlation between the two anomalies, we supplemented 15 Li-rich K giants discovered from this sample with 25 known Li-rich K giants from other studies. Dust shell evolutionary mo…
Accretion is one of the defining characteristics of classical T Tauri stars, fueled by the presence of a circumstellar disk comprised of dust and gas. Accretion produces a UV and optical excess, while re-radiated emission at the inner edge of the dust component of the disk produces a near-infrared (NIR) excess. The interplay between stars and their disks helps regulate protoplanetary disk evolution and dispersal, which is key to a full understanding of planet formation. To investigate the relations between NIR excess and optical excess in both single and binary stars, we used an archival sampl…
The nature of progenitors of the so-called super-Chandrasekhar candidate Type Ia supernovae (SC-SNe Ia) has been actively debated. Recently, Yamanaka et al. (2016) reported a near-infrared (NIR) excess for SN 2012dn, and proposed that the excess originates from an echo by circumstellar (CS) dust. In this paper, we examine a detailed distribution of the CS dust around SN 2012dn, and investigate implications of the CS dust echo scenario for general cases of SC-SNe Ia. We find that a disk/bipolar CS medium configuration reproduces the NIR excess fairly well, where the radial density distribution …
A Trio of Metal-Rich Dust and Gas Disks Found Orbiting Candidate White Dwarfs with K-Band Excess
Recent interferometric surveys of nearby main-sequence stars show a faint but significant near-infrared excess in roughly two dozen systems, i.$\,$e. around $10\,\%$ to $30\,\%$ of stars surveyed. This excess is attributed to dust located in the immediate vicinity of the star, the origin of which is highly debated. We used previously published interferometric observations to constrain the properties and distribution of this hot dust. Considering both scattered radiation and thermal reemission, we modelled the observed excess in nine of these systems. We find that grains have to be sufficiently…
The infrared excess from OB stars are commonly considered as contributions from ionized stellar wind or circumstellar dust. With the newly published LAMOST-OB catalog and GOSSS data, this work steps further on understanding the infrared excess of OB stars. Based on a forward modeling approach comparing the spectral slope of observational Spectral Energy Distributions (SED) and photospheric models, 1147 stars are found to have infrared excess from 7818 stars with good-quality photometric data. After removing the objects in the sightline of dark clouds, 532 ($\sim7\%$) B-type stars and 118 ($\si…
We investigated the evolutionary stages and disk properties of 211 Young stellar objects (YSOs) across the Perseus cloud by modeling the broadband optical to mid-infrared (IR) spectral energy distribution (SED). By exploring the relationships among the turnoff wave bands lambda_turnoff (longward of which significant IR excesses above the stellar photosphere are observed), the excess spectral index alpha_excess at lambda <~ 24 microns, and the disk inner radius R_in (from SED modeling) for YSOs of different evolutionary stages, we found that the median and standard deviation of alpha_excess of …
We report Spitzer Space Telescope IRAC 3.6, 4.5, 5.8 and 8 um and MIPS 24 and 70 um observations of the 32 Ori Group, a recently discovered nearby stellar association situated towards northern Orion. The proximity of the group (~93 pc) has enabled a sensitive search for circumstellar dust around group members, and its age (~20 Myr) corresponds roughly to an epoch thought to be important for terrestrial planet formation in our own solar system. We quantify infrared excess emission due to circumstellar dust among group members, utilizing available optical (e.g. Hipparcos, Tycho) and near-IR (2MA…
This study presents a search for IR excess in the 3.4, 4.6, 12 and 22 $μ$m bands in a sample of 216 targets, composed of solar sibling, twin and analog stars observed by the \textit{WISE} mission. In general, an infrared excess suggests the existence of warm dust around a star. We detected 12 $μ$m and/or 22 $μ$m excesses at the 3$σ$ level of confidence in five solar analog stars, corresponding to a frequency of 4.1 $\%$ of the entire sample of solar analogs analyzed, and in one out of 29 solar sibling candidates, confirming previous studies. The estimation of the dust properties shows that the…
The equatorial ring of Supernova (SN) 1987A has been exposed to forward shocks from the SN blast wave, and it has been suggested that these forward shocks have been causing on-going destruction of dust in the ring. We obtained SOFIA FORCAST 11.1, 19.7 and 31.5 micron photometry of SN\,1987A in 2016. Compared with Spitzer measurements 10 years earlier, the 31.5 micron flux has significantly increased. The excess at 31.5 micron appears to be related to the Herschel 70 micron excess, which was detected 5 years earlier. The dust mass needed to account for the the 31.5--70 micron excess is 3--7x10^…
Infrared excesses around white dwarf stars indicate the presence of various astrophysical objects of interest, including companions and debris disks. In this second paper of a series, we present follow-up observations of infrared excess candidates from Gaia and unWISE discussed in the first paper, Paper I. We report space-based infrared photometry at 3.6 and 4.5 micron for 174 white dwarfs from the Spitzer Space Telescope and ground-based near-infrared J, H, and K photometry of 235 white dwarfs from Gemini Observatory with significant overlap between Spitzer and Gemini observations. This data …
We present a new technique to infer dust locations towards reddened Type Ia supernovae and to help discriminate between an interstellar and a circumstellar origin for the observed extinction. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we show that the time-evolution of the light-curve shape and especially of the colour excess \ebv~places strong constraints on the distance between dust and the supernova. We apply our approach to two highly-reddened Type Ia supernovae for which dust distance estimates are available in the literature: SN 2006X and SN 2014J. For the former, we obtain a time-variable $E(B-V)$ …
Supernovae Type Iax (SNe Iax) are less energetic and less luminous than typical thermonuclear explosions. A suggested explanation for the observed characteristics of this subclass is a binary progenitor system consisting of a CO white dwarf primary accreting from a helium star companion. A single-degenerate explosion channel might be expected to result in a dense circumstellar medium (CSM), although no evidence for such a CSM has yet been observed for this subclass. Here we present recent Spitzer observations of the SN Iax 2014dt obtained by the SPIRITS program nearly one year post-explosion t…
We report the detection of an excess in dust continuum emission at 233~GHz (1.3~mm in wavelength) in the protoplanetary disk around TW~Hya revealed through high-sensitivity observations at $\sim$3~au resolution with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The sensitivity of the 233~GHz image has been improved by a factor of 3 with regard to that of our previous cycle 3 observations. The overall structure is mostly axisymmetric, and there are apparent gaps at 25 and 41 au as previously reported. The most remarkable new finding is a few au-scale excess emission in the south-west…
Debris discs are typically revealed through excess emission at infrared wavelengths. Most discs exhibit excess at mid- and far-infrared wavelengths, analogous to the solar system's Asteroid and Edgeworth-Kuiper belts. Recently, stars with strong (1 per cent) excess at near-infrared wavelengths were identified through interferometric measurements. Using the HIgh Precision Polarimetric Instrument (HIPPI), we examined a sub-sample of these hot dust stars (and appropriate controls) at parts-per-million sensitivity in SDSS g' (green) and r' (red) filters for evidence of scattered light. No detectio…
Infrared excess is an important probe of sub-stellar companions and/or debris disks around white dwarfs (WDs). Such systems are still rare for in-depth understanding of their formation and long-term evolution. One of the largest spectroscopic surveys carried out by the Large sky Area Multi-Object fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) recently released more than $3000$ WDs, a significant fraction of which have not undergone excess search. Here we present cross-correlation of LAMOST DR5 WD catalog with the Pan-STARRS, SDSS, UKIDSS, 2MASS, and {\it WISE}. By performing SED (spectral energy distr…
Using observations of Spitzer/IRAC, we report the serendipitous discovery of excess infrared emission from a single white dwarf PG 0010+280. At a temperature of 27,220 K and a cooling age of 16 Myr, it is the hottest and youngest white dwarf to display an excess at 3-8 $μ$m. The infrared excess can be fit by either an opaque dust disk within the tidal radius of the white dwarf or a 1300 K blackbody, possibly from an irradiated substellar object or a re-heated giant planet. PG 0010+280 has two unique properties that are different from white dwarfs with a dust disk: (i) relatively low emission a…

94 Ceti is a triple star system with a circumprimary gas giant planet and far-infrared excess. Such excesses around main sequence stars are likely due to debris discs, and are considered as signposts of planetary systems and, therefore, provide important insights into the configuration and evolution of the planetary system. Consequently, in order to learn more about the 94 Ceti system, we aim to precisely model the dust emission to fit its observed SED and to simulate its orbital dynamics. We interpret our APEX bolometric observations and complement them with archived Spitzer and Herschel bolo…
We have performed a search among low mass red giants for finding evidence for merger scenario for triggering He-flash and subsequent Li enhancement. We chose a sample of red giants from GALAH survey with well-measured Li abundances, and near and mid-IR fluxes from 2MASS and WISE surveys, respectively. The sample contains 418 cool red clump giants and 359 upper red giant branch giants. Most of the giants and majority of super Li-rich giants show no IR excess. Only five red clump giants and one RGB giant show IR excess. Notably, of the five red clump giants with IR excess, three are super Li-ric…
The persistence of planetary systems after their host stars evolve into their post-main sequence phase is poorly constrained by observations. Many young white dwarf systems exhibit infrared excess emission and/or spectral absorption lines associated with a reservoir of dust (or planetesimals) and its accretion. However, most white dwarfs are too cool to sufficiently heat any circumstellar dust to detectable levels of emission. The Helix Nebula (NGC 7293) is a young, nearby planetary nebula; observations at mid- and far-infrared wavelengths revealed excess emission associated with its central w…
We have obtained new NASA IRTF SpeX spectra of the HR 4796A debris ring system. We find a unique red excess flux that extends out to ~9 um in Spitzer IRS spectra, where thermal emission from cold, ~100K dust from the system's ring at ~75 AU takes over. Matching imaging ring photometry, we find the excess consists of NIR reflectance from the ring which is as red as that of old, processed comet nuclei, plus a tenuous thermal emission component from close-in, T ~ 850 K circumstellar material evincing an organic plus silicate emission feature complex at 7 - 13 um. Unusual, emission-like features d…
