Nontrivial diffeomorphisms act on the horizon of a generic 4D black holes and create distinguishing features referred to as soft hair. Amongst these are a left-right pair of Virasoro algebras with associated charges that reproduce the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy for Kerr black holes. In this paper we show that if one adds a negative cosmological constant, there is a similar set of infinitesimal diffeomorphisms that act non-trivially on the horizon. The algebra of these diffeomorphisms gives rise to a central charge. Adding a boundary counterterm, justified to achieve integrability, leads to well-defined central charges with cL = cR. The macroscopic area law for Kerr-AdS black holes follows from the assumption of a Cardy formula governing the black hole microstates.
When two-dimensional Anti-de Sitter space (AdS_2) is endowed with a non-constant dilaton the origin of the central charge in the Virasoro algebra generating the asymptotic symmetries of AdS_2 can be traced back to the breaking of the SL(2,R) isometry group of AdS_2. We use this fact to clarify some controversial results appeared in the literature about the value of the central charge in these models.
We apply the recent derivations of dual charges in asymptotically flat spacetimes to asymptotically locally AdS spacetimes. In contrast to the results in the flat case, in the AdS case with a Dirichlet boundary the dual charge contribution vanishes at the leading order. However, by focusing on the Taub-NUT-AdS solution, we show that nevertheless, more generally, the dual charge is non-vanishing and corresponds to the NUT parameter. We propose a complex first law of black mechanics in the presence of NUT charges that is inspired by the naturally complex nature of the charges derived using Hamil…
We compute the energy and angular momenta of recent D-dimensional Kerr-AdS solutions to cosmological Einstein gravity, as well as of the BTZ metric, using our invariant charge definitions.
In this work we study the phase transitions between the planar charged AdS black hole and the planar charged soliton. The planar soliton is obtained as a double analytic continuation of the charged black hole metric, which also involves analytically continuing the electric charge. We show that there are phase transitions between both solutions depending on the electric potential, magnetic flux and temperature. The analysis is carried out in the Grand-Canonical ensemble.
In this paper, we visit the thermodynamic criticality and thermodynamic curvature of the charged AdS black hole in a new phase space. It is shown that when the square of the total charge of the charged black hole is considered as a thermodynamic quantity, the charged AdS black hole also admits an van der Waals-type critical behavior without the help of thermodynamic pressure and thermodynamic volume. Based on this, we study the fine phase structures of the charged AdS black hole with fixed AdS background in the new framework. On the one hand, we give the phase diagram structures of the charged…
We study electromagnetically charged dilatonic black brane solutions in arbitrary dimensions with flat transverse spaces, that are asymptotically AdS. This class of solutions includes spacetimes which possess a bulk region where the metric is approximately invariant under Lifshitz scalings. Given fixed asymptotic boundary conditions, we analyze how the behavior of the bulk up to the horizon varies with the charges and derive the extremality conditions for these spacetimes.
In this paper, we consider a charged rotating AdS black holes in four dimensions and study the effects of leading-order thermal corrections on the thermodynamics of such system explicitly. The first-order corrected thermodynamical quantities also satisfy the first-law of thermodynamics of the black holes. The holographic duality between the charged rotating AdS black holes and Van der Waals fluid is also emphasized through the $P-v$ diagram. Finally, we study the effects of the leading-order thermal corrections on the stability of the charged rotating black holes.
As an intriguing topological defect, global monopole's influence on behaviors of black holes has always been anticipated but still remains less clear. Analyzing the thermodynamics of charged AdS black hole incorporating a global monopole manifests that the black hole undergoes a first-order phase transition at critical point, and of special interest, the critical behaviors qualitatively resemble a Van der Waals liquid-gas system. This paper concentrates on further investigating the charged AdS black hole with a global monopole, aiming at clarifying the significant effects of the global monopol…
We generalize the vacuum static black brane solutions of Einstein's equations with negative cosmological constant recently discussed in literature, by introducing rotations and an electromagnetic field. We investigate numerically the thermodynamical properties of the charged and of the rotating $AdS$ black brane and we provide evidences for the existence of the charged and rotating case. In particular, we study the influence of the rotation and charge on the tension and mass. We find that the rotation essentially influences the tensions while the charge essentially influences the mass.
We present a new family of topological charged hairy black hole solutions in asymptotically AdS space in $D$-dimensions. We solve the coupled Einstein-Maxwell-Scalar gravity system and obtain exact charged hairy black hole solutions with planar, spherical and hyperbolic horizon topologies. The scalar field is regular everywhere. We discuss the thermodynamics of the hairy black hole and find drastic changes in its thermodynamic structure due to the scalar field. For the case of planar and spherical horizons, we find charged hairy/RN-AdS black hole phase transition, with thermodynamically prefer…
In this paper we have added Maxwell, Maxwell-Chern-Simons and gravitational Chern-Simons terms to Born-Infeld extended new massive gravity and we have found different types of (non)extremal charged black holes. For each black hole we find mass, angular momentum, entropy and temperature. Since our solutions are asymptotically AdS or warped-AdS, we infer central charges of dual CFTs by using Cardy's formula. Computing conserved charges associated to asymptotic symmetry transformations confirms calculation of central charges. For CFTs dual to asymptotically AdS solutions we find left central char…
We study the thermodynamics in the grand canonical ensemble of D-dimensional charged Gauss-Bonnet-AdS black holes in the extended phase space. We find that the usual small-large black hole phase transition, which exhibits analogy with the Van de Waals liquid-gas system holds in five-dimensional spherical charged Gauss-Bonnet-AdS black holes when its potential is fixed within the range $0<Φ<\frac{\sqrt{3}π}{4}$. For the other higher dimensional and topological charged Gauss-Bonnet-AdS black holes, there is no such phase transition. In the limiting case, Reissner-Nordstrom-AdS black holes, with …
We analyze the extended phase space thermodynamics of Kiselev black hole introducing a central charge and allowing the gravitational constant to vary. We also discuss the relation between the chemical potential and the size of the black hole, besides the new description of phase transitions. We obtain as a conclusion that the universality of the central charge does not remain valid in general.
Using the AdS/CFT, we establish a correspondence between the intricate thermal phases of R-charged AdS_{5} blackholes and the R-charge sector of the N=4 gauge theory, in the large N limit. Integrating out all fields in the gauge theory except the thermal Polyakov line, leads to an effective unitary matrix model. In the canonical ensemble, a logarithmic term is generated in the non-zero charge sector of the matrix model. This term is important to discuss various supergravity properties like i) the non-existence of thermal AdS as a solution, ii) the existence of a point of cusp catastrophe in th…
We study the thermodynamic properties of the RN-AdS black hole in full phase space and propose a generalized thermodynamic identity. As an example, we use it to find relations of thermodynamical coefficients between the grand canonical and canonical ensembles. We also show, for the first order phase transition, that the usual Maxwell's equal area law should be extended to a new form for the RN-AdS black hole.
We investigate the holographic entanglement entropy in the Rindler-AdS space-time to obtain an exact solution for the corresponding minimal surface. Moreover, the holographic entanglement entropy of the charged single accelerated AdS Black holes in four dimensions is investigated. We obtain the volume of the codimension one-time slice in the bulk geometry enclosed by the minimal surface for both the RindlerAdS space-time and the charged accelerated AdS Black holes in the bulk. It is shown that the holographic entanglement entropy and the volume enclosed by the minimal hyper-surface in both the…
We consider Einstein gravity on a patch of AdS$_3$ spacetime between two radii $r_1, r_2$. We compute surface charges and their algebra at an arbitrary radius $r$ such that it reduces to a given set of surface charges at $r_1, r_2$. The $r$-dependent charges become integrable upon addition of an appropriate boundary $Y$-term. We observe that soft excitations at each boundary are independent of those at the other boundary. We explicitly construct solution geometries which interpolate between these radii with specified surface charges. The interpolation is smooth provided that the mass and angul…
Mass and other conserved Noether charges are discussed for solutions of gravity theories with locally Anti-de Sitter asymptotics in 2n dimensions. The action is supplemented with a boundary term whose purpose is to guarantee that it reaches an extremum on the classical solutions, provided the spacetime is locally AdS at the boundary. It is also shown that if spacetime is locally AdS at spatial infinity, the conserved charges are finite and properly normalized without requiring subtraction of a reference background. In this approach, Noether charges associated to Lorentz and diffeomorphism inva…
Treating the cosmological constant as a thermodynamic pressure and its conjugate quantity as a thermodynamic volume, we reconsider the critical behaviour of charged AdS black holes. We complete the analogy of this system with the liquid-gas system and study its critical point, which occurs at the point of divergence of specific heat at constant pressure. We calculate the critical exponents and show that they coincide with those of the Van der Waals system.
Topological classes of thermodynamics of the static multi-charge AdS black holes in gauged supergravities: novel temperature-dependent thermodynamic topological phase transition
In this letter we investigate the throttling process of the charged Anti-de Sitter (AdS) black holes in the rainbow gravity. In the extended phase space of these black holes, the cosmological constant plays the role of a varying thermodynamic pressure and the black hole mass is identified with the thermodynamic enthalpy. We derive exact expressions for the Joule-Thomson coefficient and the inversion temperature in terms of black hole parameters and constants of rainbow gravity analytically, and then perform a numerical analysis for the isenthalpic and inversion curves of charged AdS black hole…
We study the phenomena of superradiance for $F(R)$-Maxwell black holes in an AdS space-time. The AdS boundary plays the role of a mirror and provides a natural confining system that makes the superradiant waves bouncing back and forth between the region near the horizon and the reflective boundary, causing a possible superradiant instability. We obtain numerical solutions for static hairy black holes in this scenario and investigate their instability and explicitly address the stability of such solutions for spherical perturbations under specific conditions for the scalar charge and AdS radius…
We construct supersymmetric, asymptotically AdS$_5$ gravitational soliton solutions of five-dimensional gauged supergravity coupled to arbitrarily many vector multiplets. These generalize the supersymmetric solitons of $U(1)^3$ gauged supergravity previously constructed by Chong, Cvetic, Lu, and Pope. We show that the solitons contain evanescent ergosurfaces and give an argument that these solitons should be nonlinearly unstable.
Using Killing-Yano symmetries, we construct conserved charges of spacetimes that asymptotically approach to the flat or Anti-de Sitter spaces only in certain directions. In D dimensions, this allows one to define gravitational charges (such as mass and angular momenta densities) of p-dimensional branes/solitons or any other extended objects that curve the transverse space into an asymptotically flat or AdS one. Our construction answers the question of what kind of charges the antisymmetric Killing-Yano tensors lead to.
We have obtained (warped) AdS black hole solutions in the three dimensional extended new massive gravity. We investigate some properties of black holes and obtain central charges of the two dimensional dual CFT. To obtain the central charges, we use the relation between entropy and temperature according to the AdS/CFT dictionary. For AdS black holes, one can also use the central charge function formalism which leads to the same results.
In this paper, we will analyze the effects of thermal fluctuations on a charged AdS black hole. This will be done by analyzing the corrections to black hole thermodynamics due to these thermal fluctuations. We will demonstrate that the entropy of this black hole get corrected by logarithmic term. We will also calculate other corrections to other important thermodynamic quantities for this black hole. Finally, we will use the corrected value of the specific heat to analyze the phase transition in this system.
We obtain the charged rotating black hole in conformal gravity. The metric is asymptotic to the (anti-)de Sitter spacetime. The contribution to the metric from the charges has a slower falloff than that in the Kerr-Newman AdS black hole. We analyse the global structure and obtain all the thermodynamical quantities including the mass, angular momentum, electric/magnetic charges and their thermodynamical conjugates. We verify that the first law of thermodynamics holds. We also obtain the new neutral rotating black holes that are beyond Einstein metrics. In contrast to the static ones, these rota…
We study the thermodynamics and the phase structures of Reissner-Nordstrom and Born-Infeld black holes in AdS space by constructing ``off-shell'' free energies using thermodynamic quantities derived directly from the action. We then use these results to propose ``off-shell'' effective potentials for the respective boundary gauge theories. The saddle points of the potentials describe all the equilibrium phases of the gauge theories.
We reconsider the thermodynamics of AdS black holes in the context of gauge-gravity duality. In this new setting where both the cosmological constant $Λ$ and the gravitational Newton constant $G$ are varied in the bulk, we rewrite the first law in a new form containing both $Λ$ (associated with thermodynamic pressure) and the central charge $C$ of the dual CFT theory and their conjugate variables. We obtain a novel thermodynamic volume, in turn leading to a new understanding of the Van der Waals behavior of the charged AdS black holes, in which phase changes are governed by the degrees of free…
The extended thermodynamics of static charged AdS black holes in conformal gravity is analyzed. The $P-V$ criticality of these black holes has some unusual features. There exists a single critical point with critical temperature $T_c$ and critical pressure $P_c$. At fixed $T>T_c$ (or at fixed $P>P_c$), there are two zeroth order phase transition points but no first order phase transition points. The systems favors large pressure states at constant $T$, or high temperature states at constant $P$.
In the previous work we give a microscopic explanation of the entropy for the BTZ black hole and four-dimensional Kerr black hole based on the massless scalar field theory on the horizon. An essential input is the central charges of those black holes. In this paper, we calculate the central charges for Kerr black holes and Kerr-AdS black holes in diverse dimensions by rewriting the entropy formula in a suggesting way. Then we also give the statistical explanation for the entropy of those black holes based on the scalar field on the horizon which similar to 4D kerr black hole.
We construct hairy black hole solutions that merge with the anti-de Sitter (AdS$_4$) Reissner-Nordström black hole at the onset of superradiance. These hairy black holes have, for a given mass and charge, higher entropy than the corresponding AdS$_4$-Reissner-Nordström black hole. Therefore, they are natural candidates for the endpoint of the charged superradiant instability. On the other hand, hairy black holes never dominate the canonical and grand-canonical ensembles. The zero-horizon radius of the hairy black holes is a soliton (i.e. a boson star under a gauge transformation). We construct…
We construct necessary and sufficient geometric conditions for a class of AdS$_2$ solutions of M-theory with, at least, minimal supersymmetry to exist. We generalize previous results in the literature for ${\cal N}=(2,0)$ supersymmetry in AdS$_2$ to ${\cal N}=(1,0)$. When the solution can be locally described as AdS$_2\times Σ_g \times \,$SE$_7$ with $Σ_g$ a Riemann surface of genus $g$ and SE$_7$ a seven-dimensional Sasaki-Einstein manifold, we clarify and unify various solutions present in the literature. In the case of SE$_7=Q^{1,1,1}$ we find a new solution with baryonic and mesonic charge…
We study the hololgraphic dual of the extended thermodynamics of spherically symmetric, charged AdS black holes in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. The gravitational thermodynamics of AdS black holes can be extended by allowing for variations of the cosmological constant and Newton's constant. In the dual CFT this corresponds to including the central charge $C$ and its chemical potential $μ$ as a new pair of conjugate thermodynamic variables, in addition to the standard pairs: temperature vs. entropy $(T,S)$, electric potential vs. charge $(\tilde Φ, \tilde Q)$ and field theory press…
We discuss the issue of how to include magnetic charges in the AdS(4) superalgebra osp(4|2). It is shown that the usual way of introducing a pseudoscalar central charge on the right hand side of the basic anticommutator does not work, because this breaks SO(2,3) covariance. We propose a way out by promoting the magnetic charge to a vector charge, which amounts to enlarge osp(4|2) to the superconformal algebra su(2,2|1). The conditions for 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 BPS states are then analyzed. These states form the boundary of the convex cone associated with the Jordan algebra of 4x4 complex hermitian …
We investigate the relations between the black hole shadow and charged AdS black hole critical behaviour in the extended phase space. Using the thermo-shadow formalism built-in [1], we reveal that the shadow radius can be considered as an efficient tool to study thermodynamical black hole systems. Based on such arguments, we build a thermal profile by varying the RN-AdS black hole temperature on the shadow silhouette. Among others, the Van der Waals-like phase transition takes place. This could open a new window on the thermal picture of black holes and the corresponding thermodynamics from th…
We investigate the conjectured bound on the Lyapunov exponent for a charged particle with angular motion in the Kerr-Newman-AdS black hole. The Lyapunov exponent is calculated based on the effective Lagrangian. We show that the negative cosmological constant reduces the chaotic behavior of the particle, namely, it decreases the Lyapunov exponent. Hence, the bound is more effective in the AdS spacetime than in the flat spacetime. Nevertheless, we find that the bound can be violated when the angular momenta of the black hole are turned on. Moreover, we show that in an extremal black hole, the bo…
In this paper, we consider dyonic charged AdS black hole which is holographic dual of a van der Waals fluid. We use logarithmic corrected entropy and study thermodynamics of the black hole and show that holographic picture is still valid. Critical behaviors and stability also discussed. Logarithmic corrections arises due to thermal fluctuations which are important when size of black hole be small. So, thermal fluctuations interpreted as quantum effect. It means that we can see quantum effect of a black hole which is a gravitational system.
When an electrically charged black hole is perturbed its inner horizon becomes a singularity, often referred to as the Poisson-Israel mass inflation singularity. Ori constructed a model of this phenomenon for asymptotically flat black holes, in which the metric can be determined explicitly in the mass inflation region. In this paper we implement the Ori model for charged AdS black holes. We find that the mass function inflates faster than the flat space case as the inner horizon is approached. Nevertheless, the mass inflation singularity is still a weak singularity: although spacetime curvatur…
We study the dual CFT description of the $d+1$-dimensional Reissner-Nordström-Anti de Sitter (RN-AdS$_{d+1}$) black hole in the large dimension (large $d$) limit, both for the extremal and nonextremal cases. The central charge of the dual CFT$_2$ (or chiral CFT$_1$) is calculated for the near horizon near extremal geometry which possess an AdS$_2$ structure. Besides, the $Q$-picture hidden conformal symmetry in the nonextremal background can be naturally obtained by a probe charged scalar field in the large $d$ limit, without the need to input the usual limits to probe the hidden conformal sym…
We consider quantum field theory near the horizon of an extreme Kerr black hole. In this limit, the dynamics is well approximated by a tower of electrically charged fields propagating in an $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ invariant AdS$_2$ geometry endowed with a constant, symmetry preserving background electric field. At large charge the fields oscillate near the AdS$_2$ boundary and no longer admit a standard Dirichlet treatment. From the Kerr black hole perspective, this phenomenon is related to the presence of an ergosphere. We discuss a definition for the quantum field theory whereby we 'UV' complete …
We obtain a perturbative solution for rotating charged black holes in 5-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory with a negative cosmological constant. We start from a small undeformed Kerr-AdS solution and use the electric charge as a perturbative parameter to build up black holes with equal-magnitude angular momenta up to forth order. These black hole solutions are described by three parameters, the charge, horizon radius and horizon angular velocity. We determine the physical quantities of these black holes and study their dependence on the parameters of black holes and arbitrary Ch…
A new formula for the conserved charges in 3+1 gravity for spacetimes with local AdS asymptotic geometry is proposed. It is shown that requiring the action to have an extremum for this class of asymptotia sets the boundary term that must be added to the Lagrangian as the Euler density with a fixed weight factor. The resulting action gives rise to the mass and angular momentum as Noether charges associated to the asymptotic Killing vectors without requiring specification of a reference background in order to have a convergent expression. A consequence of this definition is that any negative con…
We calculate the quasinormal modes of massless scalar perturbations around small and large four-dimensional Reissner-Nordstrom-Anti de Sitter (RN-AdS) black holes. We find a dramatic change in the slopes of quasinormal frequencies in small and large black holes near the critical point where the Van der Waals like thermodynamic phase transition happens. This further supports that the quasinormal mode can be a dynamic probe of the thermodynamic phase transition.
With the help of a generalized form of the metric ansatz found for the single-charge case in a previous work [S.Q. Wu, Phys. Rev. D 83, 121502(R) (2011)], I adopt a simple algorithm to construct the most general nonextremal rotating charged black hole solutions in five-dimensional $U(1)^3$ gauged supergravity. The general solution that is interesting for testing the AdS$_5$/CFT$_4$ correspondence in M-theory, is characterized by its mass, two unequal rotation parameters, three different U(1) charges, and a negative cosmological constant. The metric ansatz is very universal and illuminative, it…
Motivated by a recent work on asymptotically Ad$S_4$ black holes in M-theory, we investigate both thermodynamics and thermodynamical geometry of Raissner-Nordstrom-AdS black holes from M2-branes. More precisely, we study AdS black holes in $AdS_{4}\times S^{7}$, with the number of M2-branes interpreted as a thermodynamical variable. In this context, we calculate various thermodynamical quantities including the chemical potential, and examine their phase transitions along with the corresponding stability behaviors. In addition, we also evaluate the thermodynamical curvatures of the Weinhold, Ru…
We study N =4 super Yang-Mills theories on a three sphere with two kinds of chemical potentials. One is associated with the R-symmetry and the other with the rotational symmetry of S^3 (SO(4) symmetry). These correspond to the charged Kerr-AdS black holes via AdS/CFT. The exact partition functions at zero coupling are computed and the thermodynamical properties are studied. We find a nontrivial gap between the confinement/deconfinement transition line and the boundary of the phase diagram when we include more than four chemical potentials. In the dual gravity, we find such a gap in the phase d…
The evolution of evaporating charged black holes is complicated to model in general, but is nevertheless important since the hints to the Information Loss Paradox and its recent firewall incarnation may lie in understanding more generic geometries than that of Schwarzschild spacetime. Fortunately, for sufficiently large asymptotically flat Reissner-Nordstrom black holes, the evaporation process can be modeled via a system of coupled linear ordinary differential equations, with charge loss rate governed by Schwinger pair-production process. The same model can be generalized to study the evapora…
I construct exact solutions for general nonextremal rotating, charged Kaluza-Klein black holes with a cosmological constant and with arbitrary angular momenta in all higher dimensions. I then investigate their thermodynamics and find their generalizations with the NUT charges. The metrics are given in both Boyer-Lindquist coordinates and a form very similar to the famous Kerr-Schild ansatz, which highlights its potential application to include multiple electric charges into solutions yet to be found in gauged supergravity. It is also observed that the metric ansatz in $D = 4$ dimensions is sim…
We show that the 3D charged Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole solution interpolates between two different 2D AdS spacetimes: a near-extremal, near-horizon AdS_2 geometry with constant dilaton and U(1) field and an asymptotic AdS_2 geometry with a linear dilaton. Thus, the charged BTZ black hole can be considered as interpolating between the two different formulations proposed until now for AdS_2 quantum gravity. In both cases the theory is the chiral half of a 2D CFT and describes, respectively, Brown-Hennaux-like boundary deformations and near-horizon excitations. The central charge…
The scaling dimensions of charged operators in conformal field theory were recently computed in a large charge expansion. We verify this expansion in a dual AdS model. Specifically, we numerically construct solitonic boson star solutions of Einstein-Maxwell-Scalar theory in AdS$_4$ and find that its mass at large charge reproduces the universal form of the lowest operator dimension in the large U(1) charge sector of the dual 2+1 dimensional CFT.
We compute logarithmic corrections to the entropy of a magnetically charged extremal black hole in AdS4 x S7 using the quantum entropy function and discuss the possibility of matching against recently derived microscopic expressions.
We study 2D Maxwell-dilaton gravity on AdS(2). We distinguish two distinctive cases depending on whether the AdS(2) solution can be lifted to an AdS(3) geometry. In both cases, in order to get a consistent boundary condition we need to work with a twisted energy momentum tensor which has non-zero central charge. With this central charge and the explicit form of the twisted Virasoro generators we compute the entropy of the system using the Cardy formula. The entropy is found to be the same as that obtained from gravity calculations for a specific value of the level of the U(1) current. The agre…
We show the existence of an infinite set of non-local classically conserved charges on the Green-Schwarz closed superstring in a pp-wave background. We find that these charges agree with the Penrose limit of non-local classically conserved charges recently found for the $AdS_5 \times S^5$ Green-Schwarz superstring. The charges constructed in this paper could help to understand the role played by these on the full $AdS_5 \times S^5$ background.
Surface charges of a $p$-form theory on the boundary of an AdS$_{d+1}$ spacetime are computed. Counter-terms on the boundary produce divergent corner-terms which holographically renormalize the symplectic form. Different choices of boundary conditions lead to various expressions for the charges and the associated fluxes. With the usual standard AdS boundary conditions, there are conserved zero-mode charges. Moreover, we explore two leaky boundary conditions which admit an infinite number of charges forming an Abelian algebra and non-vanishing flux. Finally, we discuss magnetic $p$-form charges…
