As an intriguing topological defect, global monopole's influence on behaviors of black holes has always been anticipated but still remains less clear. Analyzing the thermodynamics of charged AdS black hole incorporating a global monopole manifests that the black hole undergoes a first-order phase transition at critical point, and of special interest, the critical behaviors qualitatively resemble a Van der Waals liquid-gas system. This paper concentrates on further investigating the charged AdS black hole with a global monopole, aiming at clarifying the significant effects of the global monopole on criticality and microstructure of charged AdS black holes. An interesting dependence on the internal global monopole can be witnessed intuitively by employing contrastive illustrations.
We construct analogs of the flat space Kaluza-Klein (KK) monopoles in locally Anti-de Sitter (AdS) spaces for $D \ge 5+1$. We show that, unlike the flat space KK monopole, there is no five dimensional static KK monopole in AdS that smoothly reduces to the flat space one as the cosmological constant goes to zero. Thus, one needs at least two extra dimensions, one of which is compact, to get a static KK monopole in cosmological backgrounds.
In this paper, we investigate the global monopole in asymptotically dS/Ads spacetime and find that the mass of the monopole in the asymptotically dS spacetime could be positive if the cosmological constant is greater than a critical value. This shows that the gravitational field of the global monopole could be attractive or repulsive depending on the value of the cosmological constant.
Recently, black hole thermodynamics and phase transition have been studied in the extended phase space. Besides the VdW-like phase transition, more interesting phase transitions were found. More interestingly, combining with the thermodynamic geometry, the microstructure of black holes was investigated. In this paper, we give a brief review of recent progress on this subject.
In this paper, we analytically study the phase structure and construct the Ruppeiner geometry in the extended phase space for the five-dimensional neutral Gauss-Bonnet AdS black hole. Through calculating the scalar curvature of the Ruppeiner geometry and combining the phase transition, we show that the attractive interaction is dominant in the microstructure of the black hole system. More significantly, there is an intriguing property that the normalized scalar curvature has the same expression for the saturated small and large black hole curves. This implies that although the microstructure i…
We study holographic superconductors in the Schwarzschild-AdS black hole with a global monopole through a charged complex scalar field. We calculate the condensates of the charged operators in the dual conformal field theories (CFTs) and discuss the effects of the global monopole on the condensation formation. Moreover, we compute the electric conductive using the probe approximation and find that the properties of the conductive are quite similar to those in the Schwarzschild-AdS black hole. These results can help us know more about holographic superconductors in the asymptotic AdS black hole…
In this article, the behaviour of a charged and massive scalar field around a global monopole swallowed by a Reissner-Nordström-Anti-de Sitter (RN-AdS) black hole is investigated by considering the Klein-Gordon equation in this geometry. The superradiance phenomenon and instability behaviour of the black hole against charged scalar perturbations are studied for both an RN-AdS case and also for an RN black hole surrounded by a reflective mirror, i.e., the black hole bomb case. The effects of the monopole on these cases are discussed analytically and also with the help of several graphs in detai…
We implement quantum corrections for a magnetic monopole in a classically conformally invariant theory containing gravity. This yields the trace (conformal) anomaly and introduces a length scale in a natural fashion via the process of renormalization. We evaluate the one-loop effective potential and extract the vacuum expectation value (VEV) from it; spontaneous symmetry breaking is radiatively induced. The VEV is set at the renormalization scale $M$ and we exchange the dimensionless scalar coupling constant for the dimensionful VEV via dimensional transmutation. The asymptotic (background) sp…
In this paper, we study the small-large black hole phase transition and construct the Ruppeiner geometry for the five-dimensional charged Gauss-Bonnet-AdS black hole in the grand canonical ensemble. By making use of the equal area law, we obtain the analytical coexistence curve of the small and large black holes. Then the phase diagrams are examined. We also calculate the change of the thermodynamic volume during the small-large phase transition, which indicates that there exists a sudden change among the black hole microstructures. The corresponding normalized scalar curvature of the Ruppeine…
Combining with the small-large black hole phase transition, the thermodynamic geometry has been well applied to study the microstructure for the charged AdS black hole. In this paper, we extend the geometric approach to the rotating Kerr-AdS black hole and aim to develop a general approach for the Kerr-AdS black hole. Treating the entropy and pressure as the fluctuation coordinates, we construct the Ruppeiner geometry for the Kerr-AdS black hole by making the use of the Christodoulou-Ruffini-like squared-mass formula, which is quite different from the charged case. Employing the empirical obse…
The first law of black hole thermodynamics in the extended phase space is prevailing recently. However, the second law as well as the weak cosmic censorship conjecture has not been investigated extensively. In this paper, we investigate the laws of thermodynamics and the weak cosmic censorship conjecture of an AdS black hole with a global monopole in the extended phase space under a charged particle absorption. It is shown that the first law of thermodynamics is valid, while the second law is violated for the extremal and near-extremal black holes. Moreover, we find the weak cosmic censorship …

The phase transition of the Gauss-Bonnet AdS black hole has the similar property with the van der Waals thermodynamic system. However, it is determined by the Gauss-Bonnet coefficient α, not only the horizon radius. Furthermore, the phase transition is not the pure one between a big black hole and a small black hole. With this issue, we introduce a new order parameter to investigate the critical phenomenonand to give the microstructure explanation of the Gauss-Bonnet AdS black hole phase transition. And the critical exponents are also obtained. At the critical pointof the Gauss-Bonnet AdS blac…
We find monopole solutions for a spontaneously broken SU(2)-Higgs system coupled to gravity in asymptotically anti-de Sitter space. We present new analytic and numerical results discussing,in particular, how the gravitational instability of self-gravitating monopoles depends on the value of the cosmological constant.
It is well-known that black hole can be endowed with topological charge coming as a result of phase transition(s) in the early universe. It has also recently been revealed that such object might exist in one of the modified theory of gravity called the Eddington-inspired-Born-Infeld (EiBI) theory. Here we shall investigate the the possibility of phase transitions, and in general thermodynamic phenomena, of EiBI-anti-de Sitter (AdS) black hole with (topologically-charged) global monopole. This is the first work that applies the full Euclidean action formalism in this model. We provide a counter…
The phase transition and critical behaviours of charged AdS black holes in $f(R)$ gravity with a conformally invariant Maxwell (CIM) source and constant curvature are further investigated. As a highlight, this research is carried out by employing new state parameters $(T,Q,Φ)$ and contributes to deeper understanding the thermodynamics and phase structure of black holes. Our analyses manifest that the charged $f(R)$-CIM AdS black hole undergoes a first order small-large black hole phase transition, and the critical behaviours qualitatively behave like a Van der Waals liquid-vapor system. Howeve…
The discovery of new four-dimensional black hole solutions presents a new approach to understand the Gauss-Bonnet gravity in low dimensions. In this paper, we test the Gauss-Bonnet gravity by studying the phase transition and microstructures for the four-dimensional charged AdS black hole. In the extended phase space, where the cosmological constant and the Gauss-Bonnet coupling parameter are treated as thermodynamic variables, we find that the thermodynamic first law and the corresponding Smarr formula are satisfied. Both in the canonical ensemble and grand canonical ensemble, we observe the …
In this paper, we study the motion of test particle and light around the Global Monopole in asymptotically dS/AdS spacetime. The motion of a test particle and light in the exterior region of the global monopole in dS/AdS spacetime has been investigated. Although the test particle's motion is quite different from the case in asymptotically flat spacetime, the behaviors of light(null geodesic) remain unchanged except a energy(frequency) shift. Through a phase-plane analysis, we prove analytically that the existence of a periodic solution to the equation of motion for a test particle will not be …
We study the Einstein-SO(3)Yang-Mills-Higgs system with a negative cosmological constant, and find the monopole black hole solutions as well as the trivial Reissner-Nordström black hole. We discuss thermodynamical stability of the monopole black hole in an isolated system. We expect a phase transition between those two black holes when the mass of a black hole increases or decreases. The type of phase transition depends on the cosmological constant $Λ$ as well as the vacuum expectation value $v$ and the coupling constant $λ$ of the Higgs field. Fixing $λ$ small, we find there are two critical …
Originally considered for van der Waals fluids and charged black holes [Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 071103 (2019)], we extend and generalize our approach to higher-dimensional charged AdS black holes. Beginning with thermodynamic fluctuations, we construct the line element of the Ruppeiner geometry and obtain a universal formula for the scalar curvature $R$. We first review the thermodynamics of a van der Waals fluid and calculate the coexistence and spinodal curves. From this we are able to clearly display the phase diagram. Notwithstanding the invalidity of the equation of state in the coexistence…
We investigate the relationship between shadow radii (photosphere radii) and black hole microstructures for a static spherically symmetric black hole and confirm their close connection. As a concrete analysis, we take the Reissner-Nordstr$\mathrm{\ddot{o}}$m AdS black hole surrounded by perfect fluid dark matter (RN AdS black hole surrounded by PFDM) as an example. We calculate the Ruppeiner thermodynamic scalar curvature and shadow radius (photosphere radius) for the specific model. On the one hand, we find that the greater density of the perfect fluid dark matter makes black hole molecules m…
According to the standard lore only single monopoles contribute to the superpotential on the Coulomb branch of 3D ${\mathcal N}=2$ SUSY gauge theories. However we argue that multi-monopole configurations can also generate superpotential terms in the presence of squark VEVs on the mixed Higgs-Coulomb branch. The new ingredient is the confinement of monopoles via Nielsen-Olesen flux tubes. Such confined multi-monopoles will yield a pre-ADS superpotential which depends both on the local Coulomb moduli and matter superfields but has no fractional powers. Once the lifted moduli are integrated out t…
We construct a new giant graviton solution in AdS_5 x Y_5, with Y_5 a quasi-regular Sasaki-Einstein manifold, consisting on a Kaluza-Klein monopole wrapped around the Y_5 and with its Taub-NUT direction in AdS_5. We find that this configuration has minimal energy when put in the centre of AdS_5, where it behaves as a massless particle. When we take Y_5 to be S^5, we provide a microscopical description in terms of multiple gravitational waves expanding into the fuzzy S^5 defined as an S^1 bundle over the fuzzy CP^2. Finally we provide a possible field theory dual interpretation of the construct…
In this note we solve a minimization problem arising in a recent work of Bolognesi and Tong on the determination of an AdS monopole wall. We show that the problem has a unique solution. Although the solution cannot be obtained explicitly, we show that it may practically be constructed via a shooting method for which the correct shooting slope is unique. We also obtain some energy estimates which allow an asymptotic explicit determination of the monopole wall in a large coupling parameter limit.
Applications to holographic theories have led to some recent interest in magnetic monopoles in four-dimensional Anti-de Sitter spacetime. This paper is concerned with a study of these monopoles, using both analytic and numerical methods. An approximation is introduced in which the fields of a charge N monopole are explicitly given in terms of a degree N rational map. Within this approximation, it is shown that the minimal energy monopole of charge N has the same symmetry as the minimal energy Skyrmion with baryon number N in Minkowski spacetime. Beyond charge two the minimal energy monopole ha…
Thermodynamics of Bardeen AdS black holes has attracted a great deal of attentions due to its intrinsic complications and rich phase structures. However, the entropy and thermodynamic volume are incorrect in some literatures. In this paper we revisit the thermodynamics of Bardeen AdS black holes and provide the correct entropy and thermodynamic volume. Furthermore, thermodynamic geometries are a powerful tool to probe the microstructure of black holes. Based on the Hessian matrix of black hole mass, we introduce a thermodynamic metric and give its scalar curvature in Weinhold's geometry. The c…
Regular monopole and dyon solutions to the SU(2) Einstein Yang-Mills equations in asymptotically anti-de Sitter space are discussed. A class of monopole solutions are shown to be stable against spherically symmetric linear perturbations.
In this paper, we study the thermodynamic geometry of charged Gauss-Bonnet black holes (and Reissner-Nordström black holes, for the sake of comparison) in AdS: in both $(T,V)$- and $(S,P)$-planes. The thermodynamic phase space is known to have an underlying contact and metric structure; Ruppeiner geometry then naturally arises in this framework. Sign of Ruppeiner curvature can be used to probe the nature of interactions between the black hole microstructures. It is found that there are both attraction and repulsion dominated regions which are in general determined by the electric charge, Gauss…
We consider monopole and dyon classical solutions of the Yang-Mills-Higgs system coupled to gravity in asymptotically anti-de Sitter space. We discuss both singular and regular solutions to the second order equations of motion showing that singular Wu-Yang like dyons can be found, the resulting metric being of the Reissner-Nördstrom type (with cosmological constant). Concerning regular solutions, we analyze the conditions under which they can be constructed discussing, for vanishing coupling constant, the main distinctive features related to the anti-de Sitter asymptotic condition; in particul…
Generalizing the geometry of the gauge covariant variables in Yang-Mills theory proposed by Johnson and Haagensen, the 4-d geometry associated with a monopole is defined for SU(2). There are three relevant geometries: AdS$_2\times S^2$, $R^2\times S^2$ and $H_+\times S^2$, depending on the asymptotic behavior of the torsion. Using this geometry, the Wilson loop average is computed {\it à la} Nambu-Goto action. In case of AdS$_2\times S^2$, it satisfies the area law.
The Ruppeiner geometry of thermodynamic fluctuations provides a powerful diagnostic of black hole microstructures. We investigate this for charged AdS black holes and find that while an attractive microstructure interaction dominates for most parameter ranges, a weak repulsive interaction dominates for small black holes of high temperature. This unique property distinguishes the black hole system from that of a Van der Waals fluid, where only attractive microstructure interactions are found. We also find two other novel universal properties for charged black holes. One is that the repulsive in…
Certain exact results in supersymmetric gauge theories are generated by non-perturbative effects different from instantons. In supersymmetric QCD with N colours and Nf fundamental flavours we examine the Affleck-Dine-Seiberg (ADS) superpotential using controlled semi-classical analysis. We show how for Nf < N-1 the ADS superpotential arises from monopole contributions to the path integral of the supersymmetric gauge theory compactified on R^3*S^1. These are the monopole effects leading to gaugino condensation and confinement of the low-energy SU(N-Nf) supersymmetric gauge theory.
In this paper, we study the effect of dark energy on the extended thermodynamic structure and interacting microstructures of black holes in AdS, through an analysis of thermodynamic geometry. Considering various limiting cases of the novel equation of state obtained in charged rotating black holes with quintessence, and taking enthalpy $H$ as the key potential in the extended phase space, we scrutinize the behavior of the Ruppeiner curvature scalar $R$ in the entropy-pressure $(S,P)$-plane (or equivalently in the temperature-volume ($T,V$)-plane). Analysis of $R$ empirically reveals that dark …
We consider global monopoles in asymptotic de Sitter/ Anti- de Sitter space-time. We present the by our numerical analysis confirmed asymptotic behaviour of the metric and Goldstone field functions. We find that the appearance of horizons in this model depends strongly on the sign and value of the cosmological constant as well as on the value of the gravitational coupling. In Anti-de Sitter (AdS) space, we find that for a fixed value of the cosmological constant, global monopoles without horizons exist only up to a critical value of the gravitational coupling. Moreover, we observe (in contrast…
In this paper, the new formalism of thermodynamic geometry proposed in [1] is employed in investigating phase transition points and the critical behavior of a Gauss Bonnet-AdS black hole in four dimensional spacetime. In this regard, extrinsic and intrinsic curvatures of a certain kind of hypersurface immersed in the thermodynamic manifold contain information about stability/instability of heat capacities. We, therefore, calculate the intrinsic curvature of the $Q$-zero hypersurface for a four-dimensional neutral Gauss Bonnet black hole case in the extended phase space. Interestingly, intrinsi…
We consider states with large angular momentum to facilitate the study of the M-theory regime of the AdS_4/CFT_3 correspondence. We study the duality between M-theory in AdS_4xS^7/Z_k and the ABJM N=6 Chern-Simons-matter theory with gauge group U(N)xU(N) and level k, taking N large and k of order 1. In this regime the lack of an explicit formulation of M-theory in AdS_4xS^7/Z_k makes the gravity side difficult, while the CFT is strongly coupled and the planar approximation is not applicable. To overcome these difficulties, we focus on states on the gravity side with large angular momentum J>>1…
Taking the quantum electrodynamics (QED) effect into account, we study the black hole phase transition and Ruppeiner geometry for the Euler-Heisenberg anti-de Sitter black hole in the extended phase space. For negative and small positive QED parameter, we observe a small/large black hole phase transition and reentrant phase transition, respectively. While a large positive value of the QED parameter ruins the phase transition. The phase diagrams for each case are explicitly exhibited. Then we construct the Ruppeiner geometry in the thermodynamic parameter space. Different features of the corres…
The quark-monopole potential is computed at finite temperature in the context of $AdS/CFT$ correspondence. It is found that the potential is invariant under $g \to 1/g$ and $U_T \to U_T / g$. As in the quark-quark case there exists a maximum separation between quark and monopole, and $L$-dependence of the potential exhibits a bifurcation behavior. We find a functional relation $dE_{QM}^{Reg} / dL = [(1/E_{(1,0)}^{Reg}(U_0))^2 + (1/E_{(0,1)}^{Reg}(U_0))^2]^{-1/2}$ which is responsible for the bifurcation. The remarkable property of this relation is that it makes a relation between physical quan…
The connection between the shadow radius and the Ruppeiner geometry of a charged static spherically symmetric black hole is investigated. The normalized curvature scalar is adopted, and its close relation to the Van der Waals-like and Hawking-Page phase transition of Reissner-Nordström AdS black hole is studied. The results show that the shadow radius is a useful tool to reveal the correct information of the phase structure and the underlying microstructure of the black hole, which opens a new window to investigate the strong gravity system from the observational point of view.
In a seminal paper by Brown et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, no. 19, 191301 (2016)] a new conjecture was proposed, namely it was argued that the quantum complexity of a holographic state is equal to action of a Wheeler-DeWitt patch in the late time limit suggesting that the fastest computer in nature are the black holes. Motivated by this conjecture, in the present paper, we study the action growth rate for different types of black holes such as dyonic, nonlinear charge, stringy hair, black hole with a global monopole and a cosmic string. In general we find that action growth rates of the Wheeler…
We present a holographic theory in AdS_4 whose zero temperature ground state develops a crystal structure, spontaneously breaking translational symmetry. The crystal is induced by a background magnetic field, but requires no chemical potential. This lattice arises from the existence of 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole solitons in the bulk which condense to form a classical object known as a monopole wall. In the infra-red, the magnetic field is screened and there is an emergent SU(2) global symmetry.
In this paper we find an equivalent mean-field description for asymptotically $AdS$ black hole in high temperature limit and in arbitrary dimensions. We obtain a class of mean-field potential for which the description is valid. We explicitly show that there is an one to one correspondence between the thermodynamics of a gas of interacting particles moving under a mean-field potential and an $AdS$ black hole, namely the equation of state, temperature, pressure, entropy and enthalpy of both the systems match. In $3+1$ dimensions, in particular, the mean-field description can be thought of as an …
We study Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen (ANO) flux tubes on the Higgs branch of N=2 QCD with SU(2) gauge group and two flavors of fundamental matter. In particular, we consider this theory near Argyres-Douglas (AD) point where the mass of monopoles connected by these ANO strings becomes small. In this regime the effective QED which describes the theory on the Higgs branch becomes strongly coupled. We argue that the appropriate description of the theory is in terms of long and thin flux tubes (strings) with small tension. We interpret this as another example of duality between field theory in strong …
Employing the thermodynamic geometry approach, we explore phase transition of four dimensional spinning black holes in an anti-de Sitter (AdS) spaces and found the following novel results. (i) Contrary to the charged AdS black hole, thermodynamic curvature of the spinning AdS black hole diverges at the critical point, without needing normalization.(ii) There is a certain region with small entropy in the space of parameters for which the thermodynamic curvature is positive and the repulsive interaction dominates. Such behavior exists even when the pressure is extremely large. (iii) The dominant…
We obtain analogs of the Blandford-Znajek split monopole solution for force-free magnetospheres around a slowly rotating Kerr-AdS black hole. For small black holes, we find an analytic solution to first order in the ratio of horizon radius to AdS scale, $r_H/l$, which exhibits a radial Poynting flux and for $r_H/l \rightarrow 0$ smoothly approaches the Blandford-Znajek configuration in an asymptotically flat Kerr background. However, for large Kerr-AdS black holes with $r_H/l > 1$, namely those for which the bulk black hole holographically describes the thermodynamics of a strongly-interacting…
