In this paper, we study the effect of dark energy on the extended thermodynamic structure and interacting microstructures of black holes in AdS, through an analysis of thermodynamic geometry. Considering various limiting cases of the novel equation of state obtained in charged rotating black holes with quintessence, and taking enthalpy $H$ as the key potential in the extended phase space, we scrutinize the behavior of the Ruppeiner curvature scalar $R$ in the entropy-pressure $(S,P)$-plane (or equivalently in the temperature-volume ($T,V$)-plane). Analysis of $R$ empirically reveals that dark energy parameterized by $α$, significantly alters the dominant interactions of neutral, charged and slowly rotating black hole microstructures. In the Schwarzschild-AdS case: black holes smaller than a certain size continue to have attractive interactions whereas larger black holes are completely dominated by repulsive interactions which arise to due dark energy. For charged or rotating AdS black holes with quintessence, $R$ can change sign at multiple points depending upon the relation between $α$ and charge $q$ or angular momentum $J$. In particular, above a threshold value of $α$, $R$ is never negative at all, suggesting heuristically that the repulsive interactions due to quintessence are long ranged as opposed to the previously known short ranged repulsion in charged AdS black holes. A mean field interaction potential is proposed whose extrema effectively capture the points where the curvature $R$ changes sign.
The thermodynamics and phase transitions of charged RN-AdS and rotating Kerr-AdS black holes in a generalized Randall-Sundrum braneworld are investigated in the framework of thermodynamic geometry. A detailed analysis of the thermodynamics, stability and phase structures in the canonical and the grand canonical ensembles for these AdS braneworld black holes are described. The thermodynamic curvatures for both these AdS braneworld black holes are computed and studied as a function of the thermodynamic variables. Through this analysis we illustrate an interesting dependence of the phase structur…
We study thermodynamic and classical instability of AdS black holes in fourth-order gravity. These include the BTZ black hole in new massive gravity, Schwarzschild-AdS black hole, and higher-dimensional AdS black holes in fourth-order gravity. All thermodynamic quantities which are computed using the Abbot-Deser-Tekin method are used to study thermodynamic instability of AdS black holes. On the other hand, we investigate the $s$-mode Gregory-Laflamme instability of the massive graviton propagating around the AdS black holes. We establish the connection between the thermodynamic instability and…
We study the thermodynamic properties of the RN-AdS black hole in full phase space and propose a generalized thermodynamic identity. As an example, we use it to find relations of thermodynamical coefficients between the grand canonical and canonical ensembles. We also show, for the first order phase transition, that the usual Maxwell's equal area law should be extended to a new form for the RN-AdS black hole.
In this paper, we visit the thermodynamic criticality and thermodynamic curvature of the charged AdS black hole in a new phase space. It is shown that when the square of the total charge of the charged black hole is considered as a thermodynamic quantity, the charged AdS black hole also admits an van der Waals-type critical behavior without the help of thermodynamic pressure and thermodynamic volume. Based on this, we study the fine phase structures of the charged AdS black hole with fixed AdS background in the new framework. On the one hand, we give the phase diagram structures of the charged…
A new formalism for thermodynamics of AdS black holes called the {\em restricted phase space thermodynamics} (RPST) is proposed. The construction is based on top of Visser's holographic thermodynamics, but with the AdS radius fixed as a constant. Thus the RPST is free of the $(P,V)$ variables but inherits the central charge and chemical potential as a new pair of conjugate thermodynamic variables. In this formalism, the Euler relation and the Gibbs-Duhem equation hold simultaneously with the first law of black hole thermodynamics, which guarantee the appropriate homogeneous behaviors for the b…
We study thermodynamics and thermodynamic geometry of a five-dimensional Schwarzschild AdS black hole in $AdS_5\times{S^5}$ spacetime by treating the cosmological constant as the number of colors in the boundary gauge theory and its conjugate quantity as the associated chemical potential. It is found that the chemical potential is always negative in the stable branch of black hole thermodynamics and it has a chance to be positive, but appears in the unstable branch. We calculate scalar curvatures of the thermodynamical Weinhold metric, Ruppeiner metric and Quevedo metric, respectively and we f…
In this paper, we show the relation between the thermodynamic geometry of a four-dimensional Reissner-Nordstrom-AdS (RN-AdS) black hole and non-local observables in boundary field theory. Instead of introducing the critical point associating with the black hole charge to nondimensionalize the thermodynamics parameters, we use the cosmological constant to rescale these variables, so that a universal specific equation of state of the black hole is obtained. Further, the correspondence between thermodynamic properties of the black hole and the oscillating behaviors of the non-local observables ha…
A large AdS Schwarzschild black hole can be approximated by an AdS planar black hole. However, the temperature of a planar black hole is not well defined due to the translational invariance of the horizon. We propose to fix this arbitrariness by imposing the entropy area law. Furthermore, using the AdS/CFT holography, we propose a relationship between the temperatures of an AdS planar and large AdS Schwarzschild black holes.
In this paper, we consider a charged rotating AdS black holes in four dimensions and study the effects of leading-order thermal corrections on the thermodynamics of such system explicitly. The first-order corrected thermodynamical quantities also satisfy the first-law of thermodynamics of the black holes. The holographic duality between the charged rotating AdS black holes and Van der Waals fluid is also emphasized through the $P-v$ diagram. Finally, we study the effects of the leading-order thermal corrections on the stability of the charged rotating black holes.
The Ruppeiner geometry and the fluctuation for a four-dimensional charged AdS black hole in the framework of the extensive thermodynamics have been investigated. By fixing the AdS radius of Vissers construction, the extensive thermodynamics of the RN-AdS black hole is established, and the central charge plays the role of particle number. With the thermodynamic variables density, we reexamine the phase transition of the black hole, and the result will hold for the black holes under different gravitational models. Moreover, we have studied the Ruppeiner geometry and the black hole fluctuation, a…
We consider leading order quantum corrections to the geometry of large AdS black holes in a spherical reduction of four-dimensional Einstein gravity with negative cosmological constant. The Hawking temperature grows without bound with increasing black hole mass, yet the semiclassical back-reaction on the geometry is relatively mild, indicating that observers in free fall outside a large AdS black hole never see thermal radiation at the Hawking temperature. The positive specific heat of large AdS black holes is a statement about the dual gauge theory rather than an observable property on the gr…
Employing the thermodynamic geometry approach, we explore phase transition of four dimensional spinning black holes in an anti-de Sitter (AdS) spaces and found the following novel results. (i) Contrary to the charged AdS black hole, thermodynamic curvature of the spinning AdS black hole diverges at the critical point, without needing normalization.(ii) There is a certain region with small entropy in the space of parameters for which the thermodynamic curvature is positive and the repulsive interaction dominates. Such behavior exists even when the pressure is extremely large. (iii) The dominant…
In theories of semi-classical quantum gravity where the cosmological constant is considered a thermodynamic variable, the gravitational mass of a black hole has been shown to correspond to the enthalpy of the thermodynamic system, rather than the energy. We propose that this should be extended to all spacetime solutions, and consider the meaning of this extension of gravitational thermodynamics for the Taub-NUT and Taub-Bolt geometries in four dimensional locally anti-de Sitter spacetime. We present formulae for their thermodynamic volumes. Surprisingly, Taub-NUT has negative volume, for which…
In theories of gravity where the cosmological constant defines a thermodynamic variable, the pressure, it has been shown that solutions of Einstein's equations have a corresponding thermodynamic volume. In general, the expression for the volume is not the same as the one arising from naive geometrical considerations. Both rotation and nut charge are properties known in the literature to give non-geometric thermodynamic volumes, and so we combine the two in a single example and compute the volume for the Kerr-bolt-AdS spacetime, presenting a new expression that generalizes the previously known …
The thermodynamics of the Schwarzschild-AdS black hole is reformulated within the context of the recently developed formalism of geometrothermodynamics (GTD). Different choices of the metric in the equilibrium states manifold are used in order to reproduce the Hawking-Page phase transition as a divergence of the thermodynamical curvature scalar. We show that the enthalpy and total energy representations of GTD does not reproduce the transition while the entropy rep- resentation gives the expected behavior.
Topological classes of thermodynamics of the static multi-charge AdS black holes in gauged supergravities: novel temperature-dependent thermodynamic topological phase transition
We study physical properties of constant curvature black holes (CCBHs) in Einstein anti-de Sitter (AdS) gravity. These objects, which are locally AdS throughout the space, are constructed from identifications of global AdS spacetime, in a similar fashion as Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole in three dimensions. We find that, in dimensions equal or greater than four, CCBHs have zero mass and angular momentum. Only in odd dimensions we are able to associate a nonvanishing conserved quantity to these solutions, which corresponds to the vacuum (Casimir) energy of the spacetime.
Due to the non-independence of entropy and thermodynamic volume for spherically symmetric black holes in the AdS spacetime, when applying the Ruppeiner thermodynamic geometry theory to these black holes, we often encounter an unavoidable problem of the singularity about the line element of thermodynamic geometry. In this paper, we propose a basic and natural scheme for dealing with the thermodynamic geometry of spherically symmetric AdS black holes. We point out that enthalpy, not internal energy, is the fundamental thermodynamic characteristic function for the Ruppeiner thermodynamic geometry…
We compute the Euclidean action for constant curvature black holes (CCBHs), as an attempt to associate thermodynamic quantities to these solutions of Einstein anti-de Sitter (AdS) gravity. CCBHs are gravitational configurations obtained by identifications along isometries of a $D$-dimensional globally AdS space, such that the Riemann tensor remains constant. Here, these solutions are interpreted as extended objects, which contain a $(D-2)$-dimensional de-Sitter brane as a subspace. Nevertheless, the computation of the free energy for these solutions shows that they do not obey standard thermod…
We study the possible existence of gravitational phase transitions from AdS to dS geometries in the context of higher-curvature gravities. We use Lanczos-Gauss-Bonnet (LGB) theory with a positive cosmological constant as a toy model. This theory has two maximally symmetric vacua with positive (dS) and negative (AdS) constant curvature. We show that a phase transition from the AdS vacuum to a dS black hole geometry takes place when the temperature reaches a critical value. The transition is produced by nucleation of bubbles of the new phase that expand afterwards. We claim that this phenomenon …
Recently, black hole thermodynamics and phase transition have been studied in the extended phase space. Besides the VdW-like phase transition, more interesting phase transitions were found. More interestingly, combining with the thermodynamic geometry, the microstructure of black holes was investigated. In this paper, we give a brief review of recent progress on this subject.
The super-entropic black hole, which possesses a noncompact horizon topology and violates the reverse isoperimetric inequality, has been found to satisfy both the thermodynamic first law and the Bekenstein-Smarr mass formula. In this paper, we first derive a new Christodoulou-Ruffini-like squared-mass formula for the four-dimensional Kerr-Newman-AdS super-entropic black hole, and then establish a set of very simple relations between thermodynamic quantities of the super-entropic Kerr-Newman-AdS$_4$ black hole and its usual counterparts. Using these relations, the thermodynamic quantities of th…
Motivated by a recent work on asymptotically Ad$S_4$ black holes in M-theory, we investigate both thermodynamics and thermodynamical geometry of Raissner-Nordstrom-AdS black holes from M2-branes. More precisely, we study AdS black holes in $AdS_{4}\times S^{7}$, with the number of M2-branes interpreted as a thermodynamical variable. In this context, we calculate various thermodynamical quantities including the chemical potential, and examine their phase transitions along with the corresponding stability behaviors. In addition, we also evaluate the thermodynamical curvatures of the Weinhold, Ru…
Thermodynamics of Bardeen AdS black holes has attracted a great deal of attentions due to its intrinsic complications and rich phase structures. However, the entropy and thermodynamic volume are incorrect in some literatures. In this paper we revisit the thermodynamics of Bardeen AdS black holes and provide the correct entropy and thermodynamic volume. Furthermore, thermodynamic geometries are a powerful tool to probe the microstructure of black holes. Based on the Hessian matrix of black hole mass, we introduce a thermodynamic metric and give its scalar curvature in Weinhold's geometry. The c…
Recently Gibbons {\it et al.} in hep-th/0408217 defined a set of conserved quantities for Kerr-AdS black holes with the maximal number of rotation parameters in arbitrary dimension. This set of conserved quantities is defined with respect to a frame which is non-rotating at infinity. On the other hand, there is another set of conserved quantities for Kerr-AdS black holes, defined by Hawking {\it et al.} in hep-th/9811056, which is measured relative to a frame rotating at infinity. Gibbons {\it et al.} explicitly showed that the quantities defined by them satisfy the first law of black hole the…
We reconsider the thermodynamics of AdS black holes in the context of gauge-gravity duality. In this new setting where both the cosmological constant $Λ$ and the gravitational Newton constant $G$ are varied in the bulk, we rewrite the first law in a new form containing both $Λ$ (associated with thermodynamic pressure) and the central charge $C$ of the dual CFT theory and their conjugate variables. We obtain a novel thermodynamic volume, in turn leading to a new understanding of the Van der Waals behavior of the charged AdS black holes, in which phase changes are governed by the degrees of free…
The thermodynamic geometry has been proved to be quite useful in understanding the microscopic structure of black holes. We investigate the phase structure, thermodynamic geometry and critical behavior of a Reissner-Nordstrom-AdS black hole and a Reissner-Nordstrom black hole in a cavity, which can reach equilibrium in a canonical ensemble. Although the phase structure and critical behavior of both cases show striking resemblance, we find that there exist significant differences between the thermodynamic geometry of these two cases. Our results imply that there may be a connection between the …
We revisit the background solution for scalar matter coupled higher derivative gravity originally reported in arXiv: 1409.8019[hep-th]. In this letter, we choose a convenient ansatz for metric which determines the first order perturbative corrections to scalar as well as geometry.
We obtain spherically-symmetric and $\R^2$-symmetric dyonic black holes that are asymptotic to anti-de Sitter space-time (AdS), which are solutions in maximal gauged four-dimensional supergravity, with just one of the U(1) fields carrying both the electric and magnetic charges $(Q,P)$. We study the thermodynamics, and find that the usually-expected first law does not hold unless P=0, Q=0 or P=Q. For general values of the charges, we find that the first law requires a modification with a new pair of thermodynamic conjugate variables. We show that they describe the scalar hair that breaks some o…
We obtain the charged rotating black hole in conformal gravity. The metric is asymptotic to the (anti-)de Sitter spacetime. The contribution to the metric from the charges has a slower falloff than that in the Kerr-Newman AdS black hole. We analyse the global structure and obtain all the thermodynamical quantities including the mass, angular momentum, electric/magnetic charges and their thermodynamical conjugates. We verify that the first law of thermodynamics holds. We also obtain the new neutral rotating black holes that are beyond Einstein metrics. In contrast to the static ones, these rota…
We consider the geometry of anti-de-Sitter (AdS) black hole thermodynamics in four dimensions, where the equation of state in the extended phase space formalism allows explicit comparison with normal fluid systems. We show that for the two-dimensional parameter manifolds considered here, the scalar curvature is proportional to the thermodynamic volume. This allows us to critically examine the applicability of geometric methods in black hole thermodynamics in extended phase space. We show how several standard features that are expected to hold in normal fluid systems impose severe restrictions …
We investigate the thermodynamics of phase transition for $ (n+1) $ dimensional Reissner Nordstrom (RN)-AdS black holes using a grand canonical ensemble. This phase transition is characterized by a discontinuity in specific heat. The phase transition occurs from a lower mass black hole with negative specific heat to a higher mass black hole with positive specific heat. By exploring Ehrenfest's scheme we show that this is a second order phase transition. Explicit expressions for the critical temperature and critical mass are derived. In appropriate limits the results for $ (n+1) $ dimensional S…
We study the thermodynamics of $D$-dimensional Born-Infeld AdS black holes in the extended phase space. We find that the usual small-large black hole phase transition, which exhibits analogy with the Van de Waals liquid-gas system holds in all dimensions greater than three. However, different from the four-dimensional case, in the system of higher dimensional Born-Infeld AdS black holes there is no reentrant phase transition. For the three-dimensional Born-Infeld AS black hole, there does not exist critical phenomena.
We study thermodynamical properties of static dyonic AdS black holes in four-dimensional $ω$-deformed Kaluza-Klein gauged supergravity theory, and find that the differential first law requires a modification via introducing a new pair of thermodynamical conjugate variables (X, Y). To ensure such a modification, we then apply the quasi-local ADT formalism developed in Ref. [20] to calculate the quasi-local conserved charge and identify that the new pair is precisely the one previously introduced to modify the differential form of first law.
Considering the cosmological constant $Λ$ as a thermodynamic pressure and its conjugate quantity as a thermodynamic volume as proposed in Kubiznak and Mann (2012), we discuss the critical behavior of charged AdS black hole in arbitrary dimensions $d$. In particular, we present a comparative study in terms of the spacetime dimension $d$ and the displacement of critical points controlling the transition between the small and the large black holes. Such behaviors vary nicely in terms of $d$. Among our result in this context consists in showing that the equation of state for a charged RN-AdS black…
We construct solutions of a model which includes the Gauss-Bonnet and Born-Infeld terms for various horizon topologies $(k=0, \pm 1)$, and then the mass, temperature, entropy and heat capacity of black holes are computed. For the sake of simplicity, we perform the stability analysis of five dimensional topological black holes in AdS space.
We discuss a scheme based on Ehrenfest like equations to exhibit and classify transitions between two phases (with "smaller" and "larger" masses) of Kerr AdS black holes. We show that for fixed angular velocity this phase transition is of second order as both Ehrenfest's equations are satisfied. Finally we make a close connection of the results found from this analysis with those obtained from the thermodynamic state space geometry approach.
We study the thermodynamic and gravitational stability of Kerr anti-de Sitter black holes in five and higher dimensions. We show, in the case of equal rotation parameters, $a_i=a$, that the Kerr-AdS background metrics become stable, both thermodynamically and gravitationally, when the rotation parameters $a_i$ take values comparable to the AdS curvature radius. In turn, a Kerr-AdS black hole can be in thermal equilibrium with the thermal radiation around it only when the rotation parameters become not significantly smaller than the AdS curvature radius. We also find with equal rotation paramet…
In this paper we analyze the phase transition phenomena in Born-Infeld AdS black holes using Ehrenfest's scheme of standard thermodynamics. The critical points are marked by the divergences in the heat capacity. In order to investigate the nature of the phase transition, we analytically check both the Ehrenfest's equations near the critical points. Our analysis reveals that this is indeed a second order phase transition. Finally, we analyze the nature of the phase transition using state space geometry approach. This is found to be compatible with the Ehrenfest's scheme.
We derive new thermodynamic relations for asymptotically planar AdS black hole and soliton solutions. In addition to the ADM mass, these spacetimes are characterized by gravitational tensions in each of the planar spatial directions. We show that with planar AdS asymptotics, the sum of the ADM mass and tensions necessarily vanishes, as one would expect from the AdS /CFT correspondence. Each Killing vector of such a spacetime leads to a Smarr formula relating the ADM mass and tensions, the black hole horizon and soliton bubble areas, and a set of thermodynamic volumes that arise due to the non-…
We investigate the thermodynamic curvature in the Hawking-Page phase transition and the second-order phase transition of the AdS black hole. It is shown that the thermodynamic curvature has the same behavior in these two different phase transitions. Specifically, the thermodynamic curvature in the Hawking-Page phase transition is the power function of the Hawking-Page phase transition temperature with exponent related to the spacetime dimension, or is invariably proportional to the reciprocal of the Hawking-Page phase transition entropy. For the thermodynamic curvature in the second-order phas…
In this work it is introduced an extension of the study of the first law of thermodynamics of black holes based on the geometry of the extended phase space for AdS Lovelock gravities which includes changes of scales. As expected, the result obtained coincides with the previously known four dimensional case. For higher dimensions, the result is the arise of two new contributions to the first law of thermodynamics. The first term corresponds to corrections of the usual definition of thermodynamics volume at the horizon, due to the presence of the higher curvature terms. The second term arises in…
Motivated by the recent unified approach to the Smarr-like relation of AdS planar black holes in conjunction with the quasi-local formalism on conserved charges, we revisit the quantum statistical and thermodynamic relations of hairy AdS planar black holes. By extending the previous results, we identify the hairy contribution in the bulk and show that the holographic computation can be improved so that it is consistent with the bulk computation. We argue that the first law can be retained in its universal form while the relation between the on-shell renormalized Euclidean action and its free e…
In this paper, we obtain topological black hole solutions of third order Lovelock gravity couple with two classes of Born-Infeld type nonlinear electrodynamics with anti-de Sitter asymptotic structure. We investigate geometric and thermodynamics properties of the solutions and obtain conserved quantities of the black holes. We examine the first law of thermodynamics and find that the conserved and thermodynamic quantities of the black hole solutions satisfy the first law of thermodynamics. Finally, we calculate the heat capacity and determinant of Hessian matrix to evaluate thermal stability i…
In this paper, we will analyze the thermodynamics of a small singly spinning Kerr-AdS black hole. As the black hole will be sufficient small, its temperature will be large and so we can not neglect the effects of thermal fluctuations. We will demonstrate that these thermal fluctuations correct the entropy of singly spinning Kerr-AdS black hole by a logarithmic correction term. We will analyze the implications of the logarithmic correction on other thermodynamic properties of this black hole, and analyze the stability of such a black hole. We will observe that this form of correction becomes im…
By using the scattering of a scalar field, we discuss the thermodynamics and overcharging problem in a 4D Gauss-Bonnet AdS black hole in both the normal phase space and extended phase space. In the normal phase space, where the cosmological constant and Gauss-Bonnet parameter are fixed, the first law and the second law of thermodynamics are valid. In addiction, the black hole cannot be overcharged and the weak cosmic censorship conjecture is valid. In the extended phase space, where the cosmological constant and Gauss-Bonnet parameter are treated as the thermodynamic variables, the first law i…
It has been known that in the presence of a scalar hair there would be a distinct additional contribution to the first law of black hole thermodynamics. While it has been checked in many examples, a deeper understanding of this issue is necessary. The thermodynamics of AdS black holes in Einstein-scalar gravity is studied by using the standard holographic renormalization procedure and the variation of the Hamiltonian via the Wald formalism. It is found that the first law requires a modification by including an additional term that has a particular form $\sim\left<O\right>δϕ_s$, with $ϕ_s$ and …
