An open question in studying normal grain growth concerns the asymptotic state to which microstructures converge. In particular, the distribution of grain topologies is unknown. We introduce a thermodynamic-like theory to explain these distributions in two- and three-dimensional systems. In particular, a bending-like energy $E_i$ is associated to each grain topology $t_i$, and the probability of observing that particular topology is proportional to $\frac{1}{s(t_i)}e^{-βE_i}$, where $s(t_i)$ is the order of an associated symmetry group and $β$ is a thermodynamic-like constant. We explain the physical origins of this approach, and provide numerical evidence in support.
It is often observed that martensitic microstructures in adjacent polycrystal grains are related. For example, micrographs of Arlt exhibit propagation of layered structures across grain boundaries in the cubic-to-tetragonal phase transformation in $\rm BaTiO_3$. Such observations are related to requirements of compatibility of the deformation at the grain boundary. Using a generalization of the Hadamard jump condition, this is explored in the nonlinear elasticity model of martensitic transformations for the case of a bicrystal with suitably oriented columnar geometry, in which the microstructu…
We introduce a general, efficient method to completely describe the topology of individual grains, bubbles, and cells in three-dimensional polycrystals, foams, and other multicellular microstructures. This approach is applied to a pair of three-dimensional microstructures that are often regarded as close analogues in the literature: one resulting from normal grain growth (mean curvature flow) and another resulting from a random Poisson-Voronoi tessellation of space. Grain growth strongly favors particular grain topologies, compared with the Poisson-Voronoi model. Moreover, the frequencies of h…
Laser surface remelting can be used to manipulate the microstructure of cast material. Here, we present a detailed analysis of the microstructure of Fe$_2$VAl following laser surface remelting. Within the melt pool, elongated grains grow nearly epitaxially from the heat-affected zone. These grains are separated by low-angle grain boundaries with 1°-5° misorientations. Segregation of vanadium, carbon, and nitrogen at grain boundaries and dislocations is observed using atom probe tomography. The local electrical resistivity was measured by an in-situ four-point-probe technique. A smaller increas…
One of the main challenges in the study of TRISO (Tristructural Isotropic) coated fuel particles is the understanding of the diffusion of fission products through SiC. Among the elements produced inside the uranium kernel, it has been suggested that Pd might enhance the diffusion of other fission products. In this work we have studied the interaction between Pd and SiC. We have observed that as Pd diffuses it can change the chemical composition and microstructure of SiC. Electron Backscattered Diffraction (EBSD) analysis showed that Pd increased the amount of high angle grain boundaries from 4…
A versatile generic framework for parent grain reconstruction from fully or partially transformed child microstructures was integrated into the open-source crystallographic toolbox MTEX. The framework extends traditional parent grain reconstruction, phase transformation and variant analysis to all parent-child crystal symmetry combinations. The inherent versatility of the universally applicable parent grain reconstruction methods, and the ability to conduct in-depth variant analysis are showcased via example workflows that can be programmatically modified by users to suit their specific applic…
Many physical systems can be modeled as large sets of domains "glued" together along boundaries - biological cells meet along cell membranes, soap bubbles meet along thin films, countries meet along geopolitical boundaries, and metallic crystals meet along grain interfaces. Each class of microstructures results from a complex interplay of initial conditions and particular evolutionary dynamics. The statistical steady-state microstructure resulting from isotropic grain growth of a polycrystalline material is canonical in that it is the simplest example of a cellular microstructure resulting fro…
Unraveling impacts of polycrystalline microstructures on ionic conductivity of ceramic electrolytes by computational homogenization and machine learning
Many physical systems are composed of polyhedral cells of varying sizes and shapes. These structures are simple in the sense that no more than three faces meet at an edge and no more than four edges meet at a vertex. This means that individual cells can usually be considered as simple, three-dimensional polyhedra. This paper is concerned with determining the distribution of combinatorial types of such polyhedral cells. We introduce the terms \emph{fundamental} and \emph{vertex-truncated} types and apply these concepts to the grain growth microstructure as a testing ground. For these microstruc…
Faces-classes of grains, often referred to as topological features, largely dictate the evolution of polycrystalline microstructures during grain growth. Realising these topological features is generally an arduous task, often demanding sophisticated techniques. In the present work, a distinct machine-learning algorithm is extended for the first time to comprehend the topological distribution of the grains constituting a polycrystalline continuum. This regression-based object-detection approach, besides significantly reducing human-efforts and ensuring computational efficiency, predicts the fa…
Microstructure and crystallography of δ phase hydrides in as-received fine grain and 'blocky' alpha large grain Zircaloy-4 (average grain size ~11 μm and >200 μm, respectively) were examined using electron backscatter diffraction. Results suggest that the the matrix-hydride orientation relationship is {0001}α||{111}δ;<11-20>α||<110>δ for all the cases studied. The habit plane of intragranular hydrides and some intergranular hydrides has been found to be {10-17} of the surrounding matrix. The morphology of intergranular hydrides can vary depending upon the angle between the grain boundary and t…
We investigate the geometry of polycrystals, showing that for polycrystals formed of convex grains the interior grains are polyhedral, while for polycrystals with general grain geometry the set of triple points is small. Then we investigate possible martensitic morphologies resulting from intergrain contact. For cubic-to-tetragonal transformations we show that homogeneous zero-energy microstructures matching a pure dilatation on a grain boundary necessarily involve more than four deformation gradients. We discuss the relevance of this result for observations of microstructures involving second…

In this paper, the effect on the ultrasonic attenuation of the grain size heterogeneity in polycrystals is analyzed. First, new analytical developments allowing the extension of the unified theory of Stanke and Kino to general grain size distributions are presented. It is then shown that one can additively decompose the attenuation coefficient provided that groups of grains are defined. Second, the study is specialized to a bimodal distribution of the grain size for which microstructures are numerically modeled by means of the software Neper. The additive partition of the attenuation coefficie…
We report a study on a series of lanthanum doped barium stannate-titanate (LBTS) ceramics towards correlating their microstructure with ferroelectric properties. The samples were prepared by solid state reaction technique and the XRD analysis indicated predominantly single phase microstructure. Scanning Electron Microscopy revealed that while a low La doping of 1 atomic % yielded inhibited grain growth in 1LBTS, higher amounts of La doping yield larger leafy grains. This peculiar grain growth and microstructure evolution could be attributed to the combination of the following two competing fac…
Nanocrystalline metals are promising materials for wear-resistant applications due to their superior strength and hardness, but prior work has shown that cyclic loading can lead to coarsening. In this study, scratch wear tests were carried out on nanocrystalline Ni-19 at.% W films with an as-deposited grain size of 3 nm, with systematic characterization performed after different wear cycles. A new gradient nanograined microstructure is observed and a direct connection between wear rate and subsurface microstructure is discovered. A second Ni-W specimen with the same composition and a 45 nm ave…
A complex study of aging kinetics for both coarse-grained and nanostructured by severe plastic deformation Cu -- 2 wt% Be alloy is reported. It is shown that aging of a coarse-grained alloy leads to continuous formation of nanosized CuBe body centred cubic (bcc, CsCl -- type) semi-coherent particles with the {220} Cu // {200} CuBe crystallographic orientation relationship. These particles created significant internal stress fields and became obstacles for dislocation glide that resulted in a change in the hardness from 95 Vickers hardness (HV) for the solubilized alloy to 400 HV for the aged o…
The unique sub-grain patterns have been found in some particular alloys (316L, Al-Si, Co-Cr-Mo) selective laser melting (SLM), the submicron-scale cellular, elongated cellular or even band structures are always coexisting inside one single macro-solidified grain. Furthermore, the cellular structures are symmetrical with hexagonal, pentagonal and square cellular patterns where the cellular size is only around 1μm. Single-layer and bulk 316L SLM experiments are presented that reveals the forming mechanism of these sub-grain cellular microstructures. Complex cellular sub-micron patterns were form…
Pulsed laser deposition from a Nd:YAG laser was employed in production of hundreds of nanometer thick quasicrystalline Ti-Zr-Ni films on glass substrate. The influence of deposition temperature Ts on the structure, morphology and microstructure of the films across their thickness was investigated. The morphology and microstructure features were evaluated by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy techniques. The low deposition temperatures were found to produce films with nanometer sized grains embedded in an amorphous matrix. The grains exhibit quasicrystalline order. The highe…
During grain growth in multiphase system, a convincing understanding on how the evolution kinetics of an individual phase-grains relates to the growth rate of entire microstructure is yet to be achieved. Therefore, in this work, comfortably comprehensible statistical tools are employed to realise the influence of the evolving phase-grains on the overall grain-growth kinetics of multiphase systems, both duplex and triplex, with varying phase-fractions. A dataset capable of rendering statistically significant, and accessible, information is built by modelling, and analysing, grain growth in twen…
We present a fast algorithm for generating Laguerre diagrams with cells of given volumes, which can be used for creating RVEs of polycrystalline materials for computational homogenisation, or for fitting Laguerre diagrams to EBSD or XRD measurements of metals. Given a list of desired cell volumes, we solve a convex optimisation problem to find a Laguerre diagram with cells of these volumes, up to any prescribed tolerance. The algorithm is built on tools from computational geometry and optimal transport theory which, as far as we are aware, have not been applied to microstructure modelling befo…
A Potts model and the Replica Exchange Wang-Landau algorithm are used to construct an energy landscape for a crystalline solid containing surfaces and grain boundaries. The energy landscape is applied to an equation of motion from the steepest-entropy-ascent quantum thermodynamic (SEAQT) framework to explore the kinetics of three distinct kinds of microstructural evolution: polycrystalline sintering, precipitate coarsening, and grain growth. The steepest entropy ascent postulate predicts unique kinetic paths for these non-equilibrium processes without needing any detailed information about the…
ZnSe nanowire growth has been successfully achieved on ZnSe (100) and (111)B buffer layers deposited on GaAs substrates. Cubic [100] oriented ZnSe nanowires or [0001] oriented hexagonal NWs are obtained on (100) substrates while [111] oriented cubic mixed with [0001] oriented hexagonal regions are obtained on (111)B substrates. Most of the NWs are perpendicular to the surface in the last case. CdSe quantum dots were successfully incorporated in the ZnSe NWs as demonstrated by transmission electron microscopy, energy filtered TEM and high angle annular dark field scanning TEM measurements.
An original thermodynamically consistent large strains-based multiphase phase-field (PF) approach of Ginzburg-Landau type is developed for studying the grain boundary (GB)-induced martensitic transformations (MTs) in polycrystalline materials at the nanoscale considering the structural stresses within the interfaces. In this general PF approach, N independent order parameters are used for describing the austenite (A)<->martensite (M) transformations and N(>1) martensitic variants, and another M independent order parameters are considered for describing M(>1) grains in the polycrystalline sampl…
Systematic microstructure design requires reliable thermodynamic descriptions of each and all microstructure elements. While such descriptions are well established for most bulk phases, thermodynamic assessment of crystal defects is challenged because of their individualistic nature. In this paper, a model is devised for assessing grain boundary thermodynamics based on available bulk thermodynamic data. We propose a continuous relative atomic density field and its spatial gradients to describe the grain boundary region with reference to the defect-free, homogeneous bulk and derive the grain bo…
Polycrystal microstructures, with their distinct physical, chemical, structural and topological entities, play an important role in determining the effective properties of materials. Particularly for computational studies, the well-known Voronoi tessellation technique is regularly used for obtaining microstructures. Standard Voronoi tessellations, however, exhibit statistics that are generally far removed from those in real microstructures. Nevertheless, such tessellations can be optimized to obtain certain key features and statistics seen in real microstructures. In this work, we develop the …
Homogeneous face-centered cubic (fcc) polycrystalline CoCrFeNi films were deposited at room temperature on (0001)alpha-Al2O3 (c-sapphire). Phase and morphological stability of 200 to 670 nm thick films were investigated between 973 K and 1423 K. The fcc-phase persists while the original <111> texture of 30-100 nm wide columnar grains evolves into ~10 or ~1000 micron wide grains. Only the grains having specific orientation relationships to the sapphire grow; as in the case of pure fcc metal (M) films 4 orientation relationships (OR) are found: OR1 (M(111)[1-10]//alpha-Al2O3 (0001)[1-100]) and O…
A microstructure-sensitive fatigue life prediction framework based on CP-FFT is proposed to study SLM fabricated Hastelloy-X. The microstructure enters in the model through the shape, size and orientation distributions of grains in the RVEs, which are generated from experimental EBSD data. The framework has been applied to specimens built in two different directions with different polycrystalline microstructures and is able to accurately predict their fatigue life, using just two experiments for calibration. The model reproduces the better fatigue performance found experimentally at high stres…
Experiments, theory and atomistic simulations show that finite triple junction mobility results in non-equilibrium triple junction angles in evolving polycrystalline systems. These angles have been predicted and verified for cases where grain boundary migration is steady-state. Yet, steady-state never occurs during the evolution of polycrystalline microstructures as a result of changing grain size and topological events (e.g., grain face/edge switching - "$T_1$" process, or grain disappearance "$T_2$" or "$T_3$" processes). We examine the non-steady evolution of the triple junction angle in th…
The Ni-Mn-based shape memory alloys as a promising candidate of elastocaloric material has been reported in many literatures, especially on bulk samples. The as-spun ribbon, which has a larger surface area and is more efficient for heat transfer, is rarely studied and hence of importance. In the present work, we succeeded in producing very long as-spun Ni-Fe-Mn-(Al, In) ribbons, with around 300 mm in length. The microstructure and mechanical properties of these as-spun ribbons were thoroughly investigated by scanning electron microscopy / electron backscattered diffraction (SEM/EBSD), nanoinde…
Highly crystallized undoped hydrogenated microcrystalline silicon films prepared using SiF4-H2 mixture plasma were investigated at various stages of growth employing different microstructural probes. Our self-consistent results elucidate various aspects of the evolution of film microstructure, compositional changes and variations in crystallite size distributions with film growth. Inclusion of a bimodal crystallite size distribution in microstructural data analysis leads to results that are corroborative with those obtained from other microstructural tools, and yields a more physically accurat…

This investigation demonstrates a way to innovatively modify the ferritic microstructure at a local scale, particularly at the failure prone area such as Charpy V-notch (CVN) root. Tensile pre-strain (PS) up to 6 percent and 12 percent were employed before annealing (An) the samples at 650°C for 15 minutes. Ferrite grain size increased sharply and gradually (along the distance ahead of the notch root) within the microstructurally modified region in 6-12 percent pre-strained and annealed samples, respectively. Critical strain which promotes strain induced boundary migration (SIBM), was found to…

In this paper, we discuss growth of binary NiTi thin films on single crystalline MgO substrates. Sputter deposition is used to grow NiTi films. Films prepared by complementary preparation routes (with different deposition temperatures and subsequent heat treatments) are investigated by X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and electrical resistivity measurements, with the aim of optimizing film properties, particularly to obt…
Sea ice growth with lamellar microstructure containing brine channels has been extensively investigated. However, the quantitative growth information of sea ice remains lack due to the uncontrolled crystalline orientation in previous investigations. For the first time, we in-situ observed the unidirectional growth of lamellar sea ice with well-manipulated ice crystal orientation and visualized tip undercooling of sea ice. A semi-empirical model was proposed to quantitatively address the variation of tip undercooling with growth velocity and salinity and compared with a very recent analytical m…

Tensile twinning is a main deformation mode in hexagonal close packed structure metals, so it is important to comprehensively understand twinning mechanisms which are not fully disclosed using 2D or small volume 3D characterization techniques. A large area 3D electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) measurement and crystal plasticity modeling were carried out to investigate the tensile twinning behaviors in a Mg alloy. The results showed that tensile twinning activity was underestimated using conventional 2D EBSD scans. When compressed to yield point, the examined twin frequency with 2D was low…
A systematic investigation has been performed to optimize the microstructure of $\mathrm{L1_0-FePt-SiO_x}$ granular thin film as recording media for heat-assisted magnetic recording. The FePt-BN nucleation layer, which is stable even at $700^\circ \text{C}$, is used to control the grain sizes and microstructure during high-temperature processing. The study finds that films of high-aspect-ratio FePt grains with well-formed silicon oxide (SiOx) grain boundaries require the grading of the deposition temperature during film growth as well as the grading of the silicon oxide concentration. Well-iso…
We present an original approach for predicting the static recrystallization texture development during annealing of deformed crystalline materials. The microstructure is considered as a population of subgrains and grains whose sizes and boundary properties determine their growth rates. The model input parameters are measured directly on orientation maps maps of the deformed microstructure measured by electron backscattered diffraction. The anisotropy in subgrain properties then drives a competitive growth giving rise to the recrystallization texture development. The method is illustrated by a …
The present study evidences the role of ferrite grain size distributions on the occurrence of void initiation in a low carbon steel. Various thermomechanical treatments were done to create ultrafine, bimodal and coarse range of ferrite grain distributions. A two parameter characterization of probable void initiation sites is proposed; elastic modulus difference and difference in Schmid factor of the grains surrounding the void. All microstructures were categorized based on the ability to ease or resist void nucleation. For coarse grains, elastic modulus difference as well as the Schmid factor …
