A systematic investigation has been performed to optimize the microstructure of $\mathrm{L1_0-FePt-SiO_x}$ granular thin film as recording media for heat-assisted magnetic recording. The FePt-BN nucleation layer, which is stable even at $700^\circ \text{C}$, is used to control the grain sizes and microstructure during high-temperature processing. The study finds that films of high-aspect-ratio FePt grains with well-formed silicon oxide (SiOx) grain boundaries require the grading of the deposition temperature during film growth as well as the grading of the silicon oxide concentration. Well-isolated columnar grains of $\mathrm{L1_0-FePt}$ with an average height greater than 11 nm and diameters less than 7 nm have been achieved. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis of the microstructures of samples produced under a variety of non-optimal conditions is presented to show how the microstructure of the films depends on each of the sputtering parameters.
Understanding the damping mechanism in finite size systems and its dependence on temperature is a critical step in the development of magnetic nanotechnologies. In this work, nano-sized materials are modeled via atomistic spin dynamics, the damping parameter being extracted from Ferromagnetic Resonance (FMR) simulations applied for FePt systems, generally used for heat-assisted magnetic recording media (HAMR). We find that the damping increases rapidly close to Tc and the effect is enhanced with decreasing system size, which is ascribed to scattering at the grain boundaries. Additionally, FMR …
Grain-to-grain Curie temperature (Tc) variation in the media reduces signal-to-noise ratio due to its contribution in transition jitter noise, especially when average grain size is pushing down to increase the area storage capacity. A thermally insulating magnetic grain boundary may suppress such grain-to-grain Tc variation, especially at small grain size. Here we present an experimental study on the effect of adding thermally-insulating magnetic oxide, in particular BaFexOy, as part of the grain boundary materials in granular FePt-C HAMR media. It is found that the BaFexOy is chemically inert…
Light-matter interaction at the nanoscale in magnetic materials is a topic of intense research in view of potential applications in next-generation high-density magnetic recording. Laser-assisted switching provides a pathway for overcoming the material constraints of high-anisotropy and high-packing density media, though much about the dynamics of the switching process remains unexplored. We use ultrafast small-angle x-ray scattering at an x-ray free-electron laser to probe the magnetic switching dynamics of FePt nanoparticles embedded in a carbon matrix following excitation by an optical femt…
We developed a grain growth model that is based on the energy minimisation of surfaces with respect to the volume energy and the grain's environment. We used the well-known FePt L1$_\text{0}$ system to discover the physical factors that drive the shape and size of FePt grains. It was found that the preferred growth directions are along symmetry planes that are determined by the basic crystal and driven by surface energy minimisation. The model developed here can be used to predict a grain's growth and shape as a function of atomic number and composition. This means that by tailoring a grain's …
The dynamic process of assisted magnetic switchins has been simulated to investigate the associated physics. The model uses a Voronoi construction to determine the physical structure of the nano granular thin film recording media; and the Landau-Lifshitz-Bloch (LLB) equation is solved to evolve the magnetic system in time. The reduction of the magnetization is determined over a range of peak system temperatures and for a number of anisotropy values. The results show that the HAMR process is not simply magnetization reversal over a thermally reduced energy barrier. To achieve full magnetization…
The linear reversal mechanism in FePt grains ranging from 2.316 nm to 5.404 nm has been simulated using atomistic spin dynamics, parametrized from ab-initio calculations. The Curie temperature and the critical temperature (T*), at which the linear reversal mechanism occurs, are observed to decrease with system size whilst the temperature window T* < T < TC increases. The reversal paths close to the Curie temperature have been calculated, showing that for decreasing system size the reversal path becomes more elliptic at lower temperatures, consistent with the decrease in the Curie temperature a…
We employ an atomistic model using a nearest-neighbor Heisenberg Hamiltonian exchange to study computationally the dependence of the Curie temperature of L10-FePt on finite-size and surface effects in Heat-assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) media. We demonstrate the existence of a size threshold at 3.5nm below which the impact of finite-size effects start to permeate into the center of the grains and contribute to the reduction of the Curie temperature. We find a correlation between the Curie temperature and the percentage of atomistic bonds lost on the surface as a function of grain size, whi…
We investigate the ultrafast magnetization dynamics of FePt in the L10 phase after an optical heating pulse, as used in heat assisted magnetic recording. We compare continuous and nanogranular thin films and emphasize the impact of the finite size on the remagnetization dynamics. The remagnetization speeds up significantly with increasing external magnetic field only for the continuous film, where domain wall motion governs the dynamics. The ultrafast remagnetization dynamics in the continuous film are only dominated by heat transport in the regime of high magnetic fields, whereas the timescal…
We use ultrafast x-ray and electron diffraction to disentangle spin-lattice coupling of granular FePt in the time domain. The reduced dimensionality of single-crystalline FePt nanoparticles leads to strong coupling of magnetic order and a highly anisotropic three-dimensional lattice motion characterized by a- and b-axis expansion and c-axis contraction. The resulting increase of the FePt lattice tetragonality, the key quantity determining the energy barrier between opposite FePt magnetization orientations, persists for tens of picoseconds. These results suggest a novel approach to laser-assist…
Magnetic nanoparticles such as FePt in the L10-phase are the bedrock of our current data storage technology. As the grains become smaller to keep up with technological demands, the superparamagnetic limit calls for materials with higher magneto-crystalline anisotropy. This in turn reduces the magnetic exchange length to just a few nanometers enabling magnetic structures to be induced within the nanoparticles. Here we describe the existence of spin-wave solitons, dynamic localized bound states of spin-wave excitations, in FePt nanoparticles. We show with time-resolved X-ray diffraction and micr…
Heat assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) technology represents the most promising candidate to replace the current perpendicular recording paradigm to achieve higher storage densities. To better understand HAMR dynamics in granular media we need to describe accurately the magnetisation dynamics up to temperatures close to the Curie point. To this end we propose a multiscale approach based on the micromagnetic Landau-Lifshitz-Bloch (LLB) equation of motion parametrised using atomistic calculations. The LLB formalism describes the magnetisation dynamics at finite temperature and allows to efficie…
We propose a simple continuum model to interpret the shearing motion of dense, dry and cohesion-less granular media. Compressibility, dilatancy and Coulomb-like friction are the three basic ingredients. The granular stress is split into a rate-dependent part representing the rebound-less impacts between grains and a rate-independent part associated with long-lived contacts. Because we consider stationary flows only, the grain compaction and the grain velocity are the two main variables. The predicted velocity and compaction profiles are in apparent agreement with the experimental or numerical …
Exchange coupling between magnetic grains is essential for maintaining the stability of stored information in magnetic recording media. Using an atomistic spin model, we have investigated the coupling between neighbouring magnetic grains where magnetic impurity atoms have migrated into the non-magnetic grain boundary. We find that when the impurity density is low a biquadratic term in addition to the bilinear term is required to properly describe the inter-granular exchange coupling. The temperature dependence both terms is found to follow a power law behaviour with the biquadratic exchange co…
Avalanches of granular media are mainly characterized by the observation and the measurement of the main angles of avalanche corresponding first to the movement of a group beads and to the whole movement of a great part of the grains. These characteristics do not give any information about the rearrangements of the grains inside the granular beads layer. As any movement of a grain produces a deformation of the structure, it is quite normal to expect a sound that will propagate inside the granular medium. We present an acoustical experimental study of the of avalanches precursors signals in sph…
It has been observed that in bulk and polycrystalline thin films of collossal magnetoresistive (CMR) materials the magnetoresistance follows a different behaviour compared to single crystals or single crystalline films below the ferromagnetic transition temperature Tc. In this paper we develop a phenomenological model to explain the magnetic field dependence of resistance in granular CMR materials taking into account the spin polarised tunnelling at the grain boundaries. The model has been fitted to two systems, namely, La0.55Ho0.15Sr0.3MnO3 and La1.8Y0.5Ca0.7Mn2O7. From the fitted result we h…
We report the results of three dimensional molecular dynamic simulations on the angle of repose of a sandpile formed by pouring mono-sized cohesionless spherical grains into a granular Hele-Shaw cell. In particular, we are interested to investigate the effects of those variables which may impact significantly on pattern formation of granular mixtures in Hele-Shaw cells. The results indicate that the frictional forces influence remarkably the formation of pile on the grain level. Furthermore, We see that increasing grain insertion rate decreases slightly the angle of repose. We also find that i…
We present a two-dimensional granular model for the mechanical behavior of an ensemble of globular grains, during solidification. The grain structure is produced by a Voronoi tessellation based on an array of predefined nuclei. We consider the fluid flow caused by grain movement and solidification shrinkage in the network of channels that is formed by the faces of the grains in the tessellation. We develop the governing equations for the flow rate and pressure drop across each channel when the grains are allowed to move, and we then assemble the equations into a global expression that conserve…
The effect of grain size, easy magnetization axis and anisotropy constant distributions in the irreversible magnetic behavior of granular alloys is considered. A simulated granular alloy is used to provide a realistic grain structure for the Monte Carlo simulation of the ZFC-FC curves. The effect of annealing and external field is also studied. The simulation curves are in good agreement with the FC and ZFC magnetization curves measured on melt spun Cu-Co ribbons.
A macroscopic elastic description of stresses in static, preloaded granular media is derived systematically from the microscopic elasticity of individual inter-grain contacts. The assumed preloaded state and friction at contacts ensure that the network of inter-grain contacts is not altered by small perturbations. The texture of this network, set by the preparation of the system, is encoded in second and fourth order fabric tensors. A small perturbation generates both normal and tangential inter-grain forces, the latter causing grains to reorient. This reorientation response and the incrementa…
Deformation heterogeneities within microstructures of polycrystalline shape memory alloys (SMAs) during superelastic stressing are studied using both experiments and simulations. In situ X-ray diffraction, specifically the far-field high energy diffraction microscopy (ff-HEDM) technique was used to non-destructively measure the grain-averaged statistics of position, crystal orientation, elastic strain tensor and volume for hundreds of austenite grains in a superelastically loaded nickel-titanium (NiTi) SMA. This experimental data were also used to create a synthetic microstructure within a fin…
We model two-dimensional systems of granular aggregates confined between two planes and demonstrate that at a critical grain volume fraction an abrupt rigidity transition occurs. This transition is observed both in static and shear tests. The grain volume fraction at which the transition occurs, $ν_c$, decreases with increasing friction between the grains. Densely packed grains, with a volume fraction $ν> ν_c$, display an elastic-plastic rheology. Dilute packings, with $ν<ν_c$, display gas-like characteristics. Packings with $ν=ν_c$ display phase coexistance. It is shown that when volume fract…
Magnetic skyrmions are topologically-distinct swirls of magnetic moments which display particle-like behaviour, including the ability to undergo thermally-driven diffusion. In this paper we study the thermally activated motion of arrays of skyrmions using temperature dependent micromagnetic simulations where the skyrmions form spontaneously. In particular, we study the interaction of skyrmions with grain boundaries, which are a typical feature of sputtered ultrathin films used in experimental devices. We find the interactions lead to two distinct regimes. For longer lag times the grains lead t…
We describe the shear flow of a disordered granular material in the presence of grain fracture using the shear-transformation-zone (STZ) theory of amorphous plasticity adapted to systems with a hard-core inter-particle interaction. To this end, we develop the equations of motion for this system within a statistical-thermodynamic framework analogous to that used in the analysis of molecular glasses. For hard-core systems, the amount of internal, configurational disorder is characterized by the compactivity $X = \partial V / \partial S_C$, where $V$ and $S_C$ are respectively the volume and conf…
High storage density and high data rate are two of the most desired properties of modern hard disk drives. Heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) is believed to achieve both. Recording media, consisting of exchange coupled grains with a high and a low $T_{\mathrm{C}}$ part, were shown to have low DC noise, but increased AC noise, compared to hard magnetic single phase grains, like FePt [1]. In this work we extensively investigate the influence of an FeRh interlayer on the magnetic noise in exchange coupled grains. We find an optimal grain design that reduces the jitter in down-track direction…
Hydrated granular packings often crack into discrete clusters of grains when dried. Despite its ubiquity, accurate prediction of cracking remains elusive. Here, we elucidate the previously overlooked role of individual grain shrinkage---a feature common to many materials---in determining crack patterning using both experiments and simulations. By extending the classical Griffith crack theory, we obtain a scaling law that quantifies how cluster size depends on the interplay between grain shrinkage, stiffness, and size---applicable to a diverse array of shrinkable, granular packings.
We study thermoelectric properties of granular semiconductors with weak tunneling conductance between the grains, g_t < 1. We calculate the thermopower and figure of merit taking into account the shift of the chemical potential and the asymmetry of the density of states in the vicinity of the Fermi surface due to n- or p-type doping in the Efros-Shklovskii regime for temperatures less than the charging energy. We show that for weakly coupled semiconducting grains the figure of merit is optimized for grain sizes of order 5nm for typical materials and its values can be larger than one. We also s…
Many clays, soils, biological tissues, foods, and coatings are shrinkable, granular materials: they are composed of packed, hydrated grains that shrink when dried. In many cases, these packings crack during drying, critically hindering applications. However, while cracking has been widely studied for bulk gels and packings of non-shrinkable grains, little is known about how packings of shrinkable grains crack. Here, we elucidate how grain shrinkage alters cracking during drying. Using experiments with model shrinkable hydrogel beads, we show that differential shrinkage can dramatically alter c…
We study, using simulations, the steady-state flow of dry sand driven by gravity in two-dimensions. An investigation of the microscopic grain dynamics reveals that grains remain separated but with a power-law distribution of distances and times between collisions. While there are large random grain velocities, many of these fluctuations are correlated across the system and local rearrangements are very slow. Stresses in the system are almost entirely transfered by collisions and the structure of the stress tensor comes almost entirely from a bias in the directions in which collisions occur.
We report on experimentally measured drag force experienced by a solid cylinder penetrating a granular bed of glass beads including, specifically, a highly polydisperse sample with grain sizes in the range 1-100 μm. We consider both cases of lateral and axial intrusion in which the long axis of the cylinder is held horizontally and vertically, respectively. We explore different regimes of behavior for the drag force as a function of the penetration depth. In lateral intrusion, where the motion is effectively quasi-two-dimensional, we establish quantitative comparisons with existing theoretical…
