This article is intended for undergraduate students with the aim to provide a pedagogical introduction to the physics of stellar tidal deformations. The spherically symmetric shape of any star is deformed via rotation around an arbitrary axis or by the presence of an external tidal field. We compute the ellipticity of such a stellar object and show that rotation can be treated analogously to tidal effects caused by an external field, which induces a quadrupole moment. The detection of gravitational waves from a binary neutron star merger in 2017 set constraints on the tidal deformability parameter and on equations of state for compact stars. We derive the corresponding formalism classically and show that the Newtonian limit taken via general relativity is justified. The compressibility and the compactness of matter are discussed classically and compared to the relativistic approach. We find that relativistically the main influence on tidal deformability is related to the star's compactness.
The tidal properties of a neutron star are measurable in the gravitational waves emitted from inspiraling binary neutron stars, and they have been used to constrain the neutron star equation of state. In the same spirit, we study the dimensionless tidal deformability of dark matter admixed neutron stars. The tidal Love number is computed in a two-fluid framework. The dimensionless tidal Love number and dimensionless tidal deformability are computed for dark matter admixed stars with the dark matter modelled as ideal Fermi gas or self-interactive bosons. The dimensionless tidal deformability sh…
The moment of inertia, the spin-induced quadrupole moment, and the tidal Love number of neutron-star and quark-star models are related through some relations which depend only mildly on the stellar equation of state. These "I-Love-Q" relations have important implications for astrophysics and gravitational-wave astronomy. An interesting problem is whether similar relations hold for other compact objects and how they approach the black-hole limit. To answer these questions, here we investigate the deformation properties of a large class of thin-shell gravastars, which are exotic compact objects …
Finite size effects come into play during the late stages of neutron star binary inspiral, with the tidal deformability of the supranuclear density matter leaving an imprint on the gravitational-wave signal. As demonstrated in the case of GW170817, this leads to a constraint on the neutron star radius (and hence the equation of state). A deeper understanding of the tidal response requires an analysis of both the state and composition of matter. While these aspects may not have dramatic impact, they could lead to systematic effects that need to be kept in mind as the observational data become m…
We estimate the accuracy in the measurement of the tidal Love number of a supermassive compact object through the detection of an extreme mass ratio inspiral~(EMRI) by the future LISA mission. A nonzero Love number would be a smoking gun for departures from the classical black hole prediction of General Relativity. We find that an EMRI detection by LISA could set constraints on the tidal Love number of a spinning central object with dimensionless spin $\hat a=0.9$ ($\hat a=0.99$) which are approximately four (six) orders of magnitude more stringent than what achievable with current ground-base…
Gravitational-wave measurements of the tidal deformability of neutron stars could reveal important information regarding their internal structure, the equation of state of high-dense nuclear matter and gravity in strong field regime. In this work, we extend the relativistic theory of the tidal deformability of neutron stars to Rastall gravity. Both the electric-type and magnetic-type quadrupole tidal Love numbers are calculated for neutron stars in the polytrope model. It is found that neutron star's tidal Love numbers in Rastall gravity is significantly smaller than those in general relativit…
The tidal deformability of compact objects by a companion has a detectable imprint in the gravitational waves emitted by a binary system. This effect is governed by the so-called tidal Love numbers. For a particular theory of gravity, these depend solely on the object internal structure and they vanish for black holes in general relativity. A measurement compatible with nonzero tidal Love numbers could thus provide evidence of new physics in the strong-field regime. However, in realistic astrophysical scenarios, compact objects are surrounded by a nonvacuum environment. In this work, we study …
Though individual stellar parameters of compact stars usually demonstrate obvious dependence on the equation of state (EOS), EOS-insensitive universal formulas relating these parameters remarkably exist. In the present paper, we explore the interrelationship between two such formulas, namely the $f$-$I$ relation connecting the $f$-mode quadrupole oscillation frequency $ω_2$ and the moment of inertia $I$, and the $I$-Love-$Q$ relations relating $I$, the quadrupole tidal deformability $λ_2$, and the quadrupole moment $Q$, which have been proposed by Lau, Leung, and Lin [Astrophys. J. {\bf 714}, …
The recent discovery of the universal I-Love-Q relations connecting the moment of inertia, tidal deformability, and the spin-induced quadrupole moment of compact stars is intriguing and totally unexpected. In this paper, we provide numerical evidence showing that the universality can be attributed to the incompressible limit of the I-Love-Q relations. The fact that modern equations of state are stiff, with an effective adiabatic index larger than about two, above the nuclear density range is the key to establishing the universality for neutron stars and quark stars with typical compactness fro…
The tidal deformability of a self-gravitating object leaves an imprint on the gravitational-wave signal of an inspiral which is paramount to measure the internal structure of the binary components. We unveil here a surprisingly unnoticed effect: in the extreme-mass ratio limit the tidal Love number of the central object (i.e. the quadrupole moment induced by the tidal field of its companion) affects the gravitational waveform at the leading order in the mass ratio. This effect acts as a magnifying glass for the tidal deformability of supermassive objects but was so far neglected, probably beca…
We investigate the impact of strange matter equations of state involving $Λ$ hyperons, Bose-Einstein condensate of $K^-$ mesons and first order hadron-quark phase transition on moment of inertia, quadrupole moment and tidal deformability parameter of slowly rotating neutron stars. All these equations of state are compatible with the 2 M$_{solar}$ constraint. The main findings of this investigation are the universality of the I-Q and I-Love number relations, which are preserved by the EoSs including $Λ$ hyperons and antikaon condensates, but broken in presence of a first order hadron-quark phas…
Neutron star (NS) equation of state (EoS) insensitive relations or universal relations (UR) involving neutron star bulk properties play a crucial role in gravitational-wave astronomy. Considering a wide range of equations of state originating from (i) phenomenological relativistic mean field models, (ii) realistic EoS models based on different physical motivations, and (iii) polytropic EoSs described by spectral decomposition method, we update the EoS-insensitive relations involving NS tidal deformability (Multipole Love relation) and the UR between f-mode frequency and tidal deformability (f-…
One of the most common assumptions has been made that the pressure inside the star is isotropic in nature. However, the pressure is locally anisotropic in nature which is a more realistic case. In this study, we investigate certain properties of anisotropic neutron stars with the scalar pressure anisotropy model. Different perfect fluid conditions are tested within the star with the relativistic mean-field model equation of states (EOSs). The anisotropic neutron star properties such as mass ($M$), radius ($R$), compactness ($C$), Love number ($k_2$), dimensionless tidal deformability ($Λ$), an…
We relate the fundamental quadrupolar fluid mode of isolated non-rotating NSs and the dominant oscillation frequency of neutron star merger remnants. Both frequencies individually are known to correlate with certain stellar parameters like radii or the tidal deformability, which we further investigate by constructing fit formulae and quantifying the scatter of the data points from those relations. Furthermore, we compare how individual data points deviate from the corresponding fit to all data points. Considering this point-to-point scatter we uncover a striking similarity between the frequenc…
Recent observations of neutron stars (NS) with radio, X-rays and gravitational waves have begun to constrain the equation of state (EoS) for nuclear matter beyond the nuclear saturation density. To one's surprise, there exist approximate universal relations connecting certain bulk properties of NSs that are insensitive to the underlying EoS and having important applications on probing fundamental physics including nuclear and gravitational physics. To date, analytic works on universal relations for realistic NSs are lacking, which may lead to a better understanding of the origin of the univers…
Future gravitational wave detectors have been projected to be able to probe the nature of compact objects in great detail. In this work, we study the potential observability of the small length scale physics near black hole horizon with the tidal deformability of the compact objects in an inspiraling binary. We find that it is possible to probe them with extreme mass ratio inspirals. We discuss how the quantum effects can affect the gravitational wave observables. This as a consequence is bound to shape our understanding of the quantum scale near the horizon.
The coupling between the angular momentum of a compact object and an external tidal field gives rise to the "rotational" tidal Love numbers, which affect the tidal deformability of a spinning self-gravitating body and enter the gravitational waveform of a binary inspiral at high post-Newtonian order. We provide numerical evidence for a surprising "hidden" symmetry among the rotational tidal Love numbers with opposite parities, which are associated to perturbations belonging to separate sectors. This symmetry, whose existence had been suggested on the basis of a Lagrangian description of the ti…
We study the tidal deformability of bare quark stars and hybrid compact stars composed of a quark matter core in general relativity, assuming that the deconfined quark matter exists in a crystalline color superconducting phase. We find that taking the elastic property of crystalline quark matter into account in the calculation of the tidal deformability can break the universal I-Love relation discovered for fluid compact stars, which connects the moment of inertia and tidal deformability. Our result suggests that measurements of the moment of inertia and tidal deformability can in principle be…
The relations between most observables associated with a compact star, such as the mass and radius of a neutron star or a quark star, typically depend strongly on their unknown internal structure. The I-Love-Q relations (between the moment of inertia, the tidal deformability and the quadrupole moment) are however approximately insensitive to this structure. These relations become exact for stationary black holes in General Relativity as shown by the no-hair theorems. In this paper, we take the first steps toward studying how the approximate I-Love-Q relations become exact in the limit as compa…
The I-Love-Q relations are approximate equation-of-state independent relations that connect the moment of inertia, the spin-induced quadrupole moment, and the tidal deformability of neutron stars. In this paper, we study the I-Love-Q relations for superfluid neutron stars for a general relativistic two-fluid model: one fluid being the neutron superfluid and the other a conglomerate of all charged components. We study to what extent the two-fluid dynamics might affect the robustness of the I-Love-Q relations by using a simple two-component polytropic model and a relativistic mean field model wi…
We study the mass-radius relation and the second Love number of compact objects made of ordinary matter and non-selfannihilating fermionic dark matter for a wide range of dark matter particle masses, and for the cases of weakly and strongly interacting dark matter. We obtain stable configurations of compact objects with radii smaller than 10 km and masses similar to Earth- or Jupiter-like stellar objects. In certain parameter ranges we find second Love numbers which are markedly different compared to those expected for neutron stars without dark matter. Thus, by obtaining the compactness of th…
The open question of whether a black hole can become tidally deformed by an external gravitational field has profound implications for fundamental physics, astrophysics and gravitational-wave astronomy. Love tensors characterize the tidal deformability of compact objects such as astrophysical (Kerr) black holes under an external static tidal field. We prove that all Love tensors vanish identically for a Kerr black hole in the nonspinning limit or for an axisymmetric tidal perturbation. In contrast to this result, we show that Love tensors are generically nonzero for a spinning black hole. Spec…
Neutron stars and quark stars are not only characterized by their mass and radius, but also by how fast they spin, through their moment of inertia, and how much they can be deformed, through their Love number and quadrupole moment. These depend sensitively on the star's internal structure, and thus on unknown nuclear physics. We find universal relations between the moment of inertia, the Love number and the quadrupole moment that are independent of the neutron star's and quark star's internal structure. These can be used to learn about the deformability of these compact objects through observa…
Proca stars (arXiv:1508.05395) are everywhere regular, asymptotically flat self-gravitating solitons composed of complex, massive vector bosons, forming a macroscopic, star-sized, Bose-Einstein condensate. They have been suggested as a classical, dynamical model of exotic compact objects, black hole mimickers and dark matter candidates. In spherical symmetry, they are qualitatively similar to their scalar cousins, the standard (scalar) boson stars in all respects studied so far. Here we study the tidal deformability and the quadrupolar tidal Love numbers, both electric-type and magnetic-type, …
We study the effect of superfluidity on the tidal response of a neutron star in a general relativistic framework. In this work, we take a dual-layer approach where the superfluid matter is confined in the core of the star. Then, the superfluid core is encapsulated with an envelope of ordinary matter fluid which acts effectively as the low-density crustal region of the star. In the core, the matter content is described by a two-fluid model where only the neutrons are taken as superfluid and the other fluid consists of protons and electrons making it charge neutral. We calculate the values of va…
Observations of gravitational waves from inspiralling neutron star binaries---such as GW170817---can be used to constrain the nuclear equation of state by placing bounds on stellar tidal deformability. For slowly rotating neutron stars, the response to a weak quadrupolar tidal field is characterized by four internal-structure-dependent constants called "Love numbers." The tidal Love numbers $k_2^\text{el}$ and $k_2^\text{mag}$ measure the tides raised by the gravitoelectric and gravitomagnetic components of the applied field, and the rotational-tidal Love numbers $\mathfrak{f}^\text{o}$ and $\…
We extract the black hole (BH) static tidal deformability coefficients (Love numbers) and their spin-0 and spin-1 analogs by comparing on-shell amplitudes for fields to scatter off a spinning BH in the worldline effective field theory (EFT) and in general relativity (GR). We point out that the GR amplitudes due to tidal effects originate entirely from the BH potential region. Thus, they can be separated from gravitational non-linearities in the wave region, whose proper treatment requires higher order EFT loop calculations. In particular, the elastic scattering in the near field approximation …

Neutron stars are expected to have a tight relation between their moment of inertia ($I$), tidal deformability ($λ$, which is related to the Love number), and rotational mass quadrupole moment ($Q$) that is nearly independent of the unknown equation of state (EoS) of cold dense matter. These and similar relations are often called "universal", and they have been used for various applications including analysis of gravitational wave data. We extend these studies using piecewise polytropic representations of dense matter, including for so-called twin stars that have a second branch of stability a…
Gravitational-wave measurements of the tidal deformability in neutron-star binary coalescences can be used to infer the still unknown equation of state (EoS) of dense matter above the nuclear saturation density. By employing a Bayesian-ranking test we quantify the ability of current and future gravitational-wave observations to discriminate among families of nuclear-physics based EoS which differ in particle content and ab-initio microscopic calculations. While the constraining power of GW170817 is limited, we show that even twenty coalescences detected by LIGO-Virgo at design sensitivity are …

(Abridged) It is well known that the tidal deformability of a compact star carries important information about the interior equation-of-state (EOS) of the star. The first gravitational-wave event GW170817 from a binary compact star merger observed by the LIGO/VIRGO detectors have already put limits on the tidal deformability and provided constraints on the ultra-high nuclear density EOS. In view of this ground breaking discovery, we revisit and extend our previous work [Phys. Rev. D 95, 101302(R) (2017)] which found that taking the effect of elasticity into account in the calculation of the ti…

The role of dense-matter properties in the tidal deformability of a cold nonaccreted neutron star is further investigated. Using the set of Brussels-Montreal unified equations of state, we have computed the gravitoelectric Love numbers $k_\ell$ and the gravitomagnetic Love numbers $j_\ell$ up to $\ell=5$. Their relative importance and their sensitivity to the symmetry energy and the neutron-matter stiffness are numerically assessed. Their impact on the phase of the gravitational-wave signal emitted by binary neutron star inspirals is also discussed.
Using a data set of approximately 2 million phenomenological equations of state consistent with observational constraints, we construct new equation-of-state-insensitive universal relations that exist between the multipolar tidal deformability parameters of neutron stars, $Λ_l$, for several high-order multipoles ($l = 5,6,7,8$). We confirm the existence of a universal relation between the radius of the $1.4 M_\odot$ NS, $R_{1.4}$ and the reduced tidal parameter of the binary, $\tildeΛ$, and the chirp mass. We extend this relation to a large number of chirp masses and to the radii of isolated N…
The deformability of a compact object under the presence of a tidal perturbation is encoded in the tidal Love numbers (TLNs), which vanish for isolated black holes in vacuum. We show that the TLNs of black holes surrounded by matter fields do not vanish and can be used to probe the environment around binary black holes. In particular, we compute the TLNs for the case of a black hole surrounded by a scalar condensate under the presence of scalar and vector tidal perturbations, finding a strong power-law behavior of the TLN in terms of the mass of the scalar field. Using this result as a proxy f…
The thermodynamic relation between pressure and density (i.e. the equation of state) of cold supranuclear matter is critical in describing neutron stars, yet it remains one of the largest uncertainties in nuclear physics. The extraction of tidal deformabilities from the gravitational waves emitted in the coalescence of neutron star binaries, such as GW170817, is a promising tool to probe this thermodynamic relation. Equation-of-state insensitive relations between symmetric and antisymmetric combinations of individual tidal deformabilities, the so-called "binary Love relations", have proven imp…

The gravitational wave signal from a binary neutron star merger carries the imprint of the deformability properties of the coalescing bodies, and then of the equation of state of neutron stars. In current models of the waveforms emitted in these events, the contribution of tidal deformation is encoded in a set of parameters, the tidal Love numbers. More refined models include tidal-rotation couplings, described by an additional set of parameters, the rotational tidal Love numbers, which appear in the waveform at $6.5$ post-Newtonian order. For neutron stars with spins as large as $\sim0.1$, we…
We analyze how the crust equation of state affects several neutron star properties and how it impacts on possible constraints inferred from astrophysical observations. Using three distinct crusts, we generate three sets of model-independent equations of state describing stellar matter from a Taylor expansion around saturation density. The equations of state are thermodynamically consistent, causal, and compatible with astrophysical observations. The relations between the tidal deformability $Λ$ and compactness $C$, Love number $k_2$ and radius of neutron star with mass $M$ are studied, and the…
Gravitational-wave observations in the near future may allow us to measure tidal deformabilities of neutron stars, which leads us to the understanding of physics at nuclear density. In principle, the gravitational waveform depends on various tidal parameters, which correlate strongly. Therefore, it would be useful if one can express such tidal parameters with a single parameter. Here, we report on universal relations among various $\ell$-th (dimensionless) electric, magnetic and shape tidal deformabilities in neutron stars and quark stars that do not depend sensitively on the equation of state…
The distance-inclination degeneracy limits gravitational-wave parameter estimation of compact binary mergers. Although the degeneracy can be partially broken by including higher-order modes or precession, these effects are suppressed in binary neutron stars. In this work, we implement a new parametrization of the tidal effects in the binary neutron-star waveform, exploiting the binary Love relations, that breaks the distance-inclination degeneracy. The binary Love relations prescribe the tidal deformability of a neutron star as a function of its source-frame mass in an equation-of-state insens…
The multipole moments and the tidal Love numbers of neutron stars and quark stars satisfy certain relations which are almost insensitive to the star's internal structure. A natural question is whether the same relations hold for different compact objects and how they possibly approach the black-hole limit. Here we consider "gravastars", which are hypothetical compact objects sustained by their internal vacuum energy. Such solutions have been proposed as exotic alternatives to the black-hole paradigm because they can be as compact as black holes and exist in any mass range. By constructing slow…
The tidal Love numbers (TLNs) encode the deformability of a self-gravitating object immersed in a tidal environment and depend significantly both on the object's internal structure and on the dynamics of the gravitational field. An intriguing result in classical general relativity is the vanishing of the TLNs of black holes. We extend this result in three ways, aiming at testing the nature of compact objects: (i) we compute the TLNs of exotic compact objects, including different families of boson stars, gravastars, wormholes, and other toy models for quantum corrections at the horizon scale. I…
The deformability of a compact object induced by a perturbing tidal field is encoded in the tidal Love numbers, which depend sensibly on the object's internal structure. These numbers are known only for static, spherically-symmetric objects. As a first step to compute the tidal Love numbers of a spinning compact star, here we extend powerful perturbative techniques to compute the exterior geometry of a spinning object distorted by an axisymmetric tidal field to second order in the angular momentum. The spin of the object introduces couplings between electric and magnetic deformations and new c…
We show that rotating black holes do not experience any tidal deformation when they are perturbed by a weak and adiabatic gravitational field. The tidal deformability of an object is quantified by the so-called "Love numbers", which describe the object's linear response to its external tidal field. In this work, we compute the Love numbers of Kerr black holes and find that they vanish identically. We also compute the dissipative part of the black hole's tidal response, which is non-vanishing due to the absorptive nature of the event horizon. Our results hold for arbitrary values of black hole …
We investigate the tidal deformability of a superfluid neutron star. We calculate the equilibrium structure in the general relativistic two-fluid formalism with entrainment effect where we take neutron superfluid as one fluid and the other fluid is comprised of protons and electrons, making it a charge neutral fluid. We use a relativistic mean field model for the equation of state of matter where the interaction between baryons is mediated by the exchange $σ$, $ω$ and $ρ$ mesons. Then, we study the linear, static $l=2$ perturbation on the star to compute the electric-type Love number following…

The use of the Audio Spectrogram Transformer (AST) model for gravitational-wave data analysis is investigated. The AST machine-learning model is a convolution-free classifier that captures long-range global dependencies through a purely attention-based mechanism. In this paper a model is applied to a simulated dataset of inspiral gravitational wave signals from binary neutron star coalescences, built from five distinct, cold equations of state (EOS) of nuclear matter. From the analysis of the mass dependence of the tidal deformability parameter for each EOS class it is shown that the AST model…
We consider the dynamical tidal response of a neutron star in an inspiralling binary, focussing on the impact of the star's elastic crust. Within the context of Newtonian gravity, we add the elastic aspects to the theoretical formulation of the problem and quantify the dynamical excitation of different classes of oscillation modes. The results demonstrate the expectation that the fundamental mode dominates the tidal response and show how the usual tidal deformability (and the Love number) emerge in the static limit. In addition, we consider to what extent the different modes may be excited to …
