The role of the crust on the tidal deformability of a cold nonaccreted neutron star is studied using the recent unified equation of state BSk24. This equation of state, which is based on the nuclear-energy density functional theory, provides a thermodynamically consistent description of all stellar regions. Results obtained with this equation of state are compared to those calculated for a putative neutron star made entirely of homogeneous matter. The presence of the crustal layers is thus found to significantly reduce the Love number $k_2$, especially for low-mass stars. However, this reduction mainly arises from the increase in the stellar radius almost independently of the equation of state. This allows for a simple analytic estimate of $k_2$ for realistic neutron stars using the equation of state of homogeneous matter only.
With the recent measurement of GW170817 providing constraints on the tidal deformability of a neutron star, it is very important to understand what features of the equation of state have the biggest effect on it. We therefore study the contribution of the crust to the tidal deformability and the moment of inertia of a neutron star for a variety of well-known equations of state. It is found that the contributions to these quantities from the low density crust are typically quite small and as a result the determination of the tidal deformability provides an important constraint on the equation o…
Constraints set on key parameters of the nuclear matter equation of state (EoS) by the values of the tidal deformability, inferred from GW170817, are examined by using a diverse set of relativistic and non-relativistic mean field models. These models are consistent with bulk properties of finite nuclei as well as with the observed lower bound on the maximum mass of neutron star $\sim 2 ~ {\rm M}_\odot$. The tidal deformability shows a strong correlation with specific linear combinations of the isoscalar and isovector nuclear matter parameters associated with the EoS. Such correlations suggest …
We analyze how the crust equation of state affects several neutron star properties and how it impacts on possible constraints inferred from astrophysical observations. Using three distinct crusts, we generate three sets of model-independent equations of state describing stellar matter from a Taylor expansion around saturation density. The equations of state are thermodynamically consistent, causal, and compatible with astrophysical observations. The relations between the tidal deformability $Λ$ and compactness $C$, Love number $k_2$ and radius of neutron star with mass $M$ are studied, and the…
The LIGO collaboration recently reported the first gravitational-wave constraints on the tidal deformability of neutron stars. I discuss an inherent ambiguity in the notion of relativistic tidal deformability that, while too small to affect the present measurement, may become important in the future. I propose a new way to understand the ambiguity and discuss future prospects for reliably linking observed gravitational waveforms to compact object microphysics.

We find that the Hanford and Livingston detectors of Advanced LIGO derive a distinct posterior probability distribution of binary tidal deformability tilde{Lambda} of the first binary-neutron-star merger GW170817. By analyzing public data of GW170817 with a nested-sampling engine and the default TaylorF2 waveform provided by the LALInference package, the probability distribution of the binary tidal deformability derived by the LIGO-Virgo detector network turns out to be determined dominantly by the Hanford detector. Specifically, by imposing the flat prior on tidal deformability of individual …
Despite their long history and astrophysical importance, some of the key properties of neutron stars are still uncertain. The extreme conditions encountered in their interiors, involving matter of uncertain composition at extreme density and isospin asymmetry, uniquely determine the stars' macroscopic properties within General Relativity. Astrophysical constraints on those macroscopic properties, such as neutron star masses and radii, have long been used to understand the microscopic properties of the matter that forms them. In this article we discuss another astrophysically observable macrosc…
We revisit the lower bound on binary tidal deformability tilde{Lambda} imposed by a luminous kilonova/macronova, AT 2017gfo, by numerical-relativity simulations of models that are consistent with gravitational waves from the binary neutron star merger GW170817. Contrary to the claim made in the literature, we find that binaries with tilde{Lambda}<~400 can explain the luminosity of AT 2017gfo, as long as moderate mass ejection from the remnant is assumed as had been done in previous work. The reason is that the maximum mass of a neutron star is not strongly correlated with the tidal deformabili…
In this paper, we present some relativistic mean-field inner crust equations of state that have recently been uploaded in the CompOSE online repository. These equations of state fulfill experimental and microscopic constraints, and are also able to reproduce two solar-mass stars. We integrate the TOV equations to obtain the mass-radius relation, and we also calculate the tidal deformability, compactness, and effective tidal deformability to compare with the latest astrophysical data from NICER and LIGO and Virgo.
The chi-squared based covariance approach allows one to estimate the correlations among desired observables related to nuclear matter directly from a set of fit data without taking recourse to the distributions of the nuclear matter parameters (NMPs). Such an approach is applied to study the correlations of tidal deformability of neutron star with the slope and the curvature parameters of nuclear symmetry energy governed by an extensive set of fit data on the finite nuclei together with the maximum mass of the neutron star. The knowledge of the distributions of NMPs consistent with the fit dat…
The neutron star tidal deformability is a critical parameter which determines the pre-merger gravitational-wave signal in a neutron star merger. In this article, we show how neutron star tidal deformabilities behave in the presence of one or two sharp phase transition(s). We characterize how the tidal deformability changes when the properties of these phase transitions are modified in dense matter equation of state (EoS). Sharp phase transitions lead to the smallest possible tidal deformabilities and also induce discontinuities in the relation between tidal deformability and gravitational mass…
A principal goal of gravitational-wave astronomy is to constrain the neutron star equation of state (EOS) by measuring the tidal deformability of neutron stars. The tidally induced departure of the waveform from that of point-particle (or spinless binary black hole (BBH)) increases with the stiffness of the EOS. We show that causality (the requirement that the speed of sound is less than the speed of light for a perfect fluid satisfying a one-parameter equation of state) places an upper bound on tidal deformability as a function of mass. Like the upper mass limit, the limit on deformabity is o…
Universal relations independently of the equation of state (EOS) for neutron star matter are valuable, if they exist, for extracting the neutron star properties, which generally depend on the EOS. In this study, we newly derive the universal relations predicting the gravitational wave frequencies for the fundamental ($f$), the 1st pressure ($p_1$), and the 1st spacetime ($w_1$) modes and the damping rate for the $f$- and $w_1$-modes as a function of the dimensionless tidal deformability. In particular, with the universal relations for the $f$-modes one can predict the frequencies and damping r…
The upper bound of the speed of sound in dense nuclear matter is one of the most interesting but still unsolved problems in Nuclear Physics. Theoretical studies in connection with recent observational data of isolated neutron stars as well as binary neutron stars systems offer an excellent opportunity to shed light on this problem. In the present work, we suggest a method to directly relate the measured tidal deformability (polarizability) of binary neutron stars system (before merger) to the maximum neutron star mass scenario and possible upper bound on the speed of sound. This method is base…
Neutron star tidal deformability extracted from gravitational wave data provides a novel probe to the interior neutron star structures and the associated nuclear equation of state (EOS). Instead of the popular composition of nucleons and leptons in neutron stars, we include hyperons and examine the role of hyperons in the tidal deformability and its impact on the symmetry energy in a relativistic mean-field approach with the density-dependent parametrizations. The hyperons are found to have significant impact on the deformability, correlated sensitively with the onset density and fraction of h…
We use gravitational wave (GW) and electromagnetic (EM) observations of GW170817 to constrain the extent of pressure anisotropy in it. While it is quite likely that the pressure inside a neutron star is mostly isotropic, certain physical processes or characteristics, such as phase transitions in nuclear matter or the presence of strong magnetic fields, can introduce pressure anisotropy. In this work, we show that anisotropic pressure in neutron stars can reduce their tidal deformability substantially. For the anisotropy-pressure model of Bowers and Liang and a couple of relativistic EOSs -- DD…
The role of the symmetry energy and the neutron-matter stiffness on the tidal deformability of a cold nonaccreted neutron star is studied using a set of unified equations of state. Based on the nuclear energy-density functional theory, these equations of state provide a thermodynamically consistent treatment of all regions of the star and were calculated using functionals that were precision fitted to experimental and theoretical nuclear data. Predictions are compared to constraints inferred from the recent detection of the gravitational-wave signal GW170817 from a binary neutron-star merger a…
The energy radiated in supernova neutrinos is a fundamental quantity that is closely related to the gravitational binding energy of a neutron star. Recently the tidal deformability of neutron stars was constrained by gravitational wave observations. By considering several equations of state, we find a strong correlation between the tidal deformability and neutron star binding energy. We use this correlation to sharpen predictions of the binding energy of neutron stars and the total neutrino energy in supernovae. We find a minimum binding energy for a neutron star formed in a supernova of $\sim…
The tidal properties of a neutron star are measurable in the gravitational waves emitted from inspiraling binary neutron stars, and they have been used to constrain the neutron star equation of state. In the same spirit, we study the dimensionless tidal deformability of dark matter admixed neutron stars. The tidal Love number is computed in a two-fluid framework. The dimensionless tidal Love number and dimensionless tidal deformability are computed for dark matter admixed stars with the dark matter modelled as ideal Fermi gas or self-interactive bosons. The dimensionless tidal deformability sh…
In this work, we investigate the influence of the phase transition and a stiffer fluid in neutron stars' cores on the static equilibrium configuration, dynamical stability, and tidal deformability. For this aim, it is taken into account that the fluid in the core and the envelope follow the relativistic polytropic equation of state. We find that the phase transition and a stiffer fluid in the core will reflect in the total mass, radius, speed of sound, core radius, radial stability with a slow and rapid conversion at the interface, and tidal deformability. We also investigate the dimensionless…
Finite size effects come into play during the late stages of neutron star binary inspiral, with the tidal deformability of the supranuclear density matter leaving an imprint on the gravitational-wave signal. As demonstrated in the case of GW170817, this leads to a constraint on the neutron star radius (and hence the equation of state). A deeper understanding of the tidal response requires an analysis of both the state and composition of matter. While these aspects may not have dramatic impact, they could lead to systematic effects that need to be kept in mind as the observational data become m…
In the late inspiral phase, gravitational waves from binary neutron star mergers carry the imprint of the equation of state due to the tidally deformed structure of the components. If the stars contain solid crusts, then their shear modulus can affect the deformability of the star and, thereby, modify the emitted signal. Here, we investigate the effect of realistic equations of state (EOSs) of the crustal matter, with a realistic model for the shear modulus of the stellar crust in a fully general relativistic framework. This allows us to systematically study the deviations that are expected fr…
(Abridged) It is well known that the tidal deformability of a compact star carries important information about the interior equation-of-state (EOS) of the star. The first gravitational-wave event GW170817 from a binary compact star merger observed by the LIGO/VIRGO detectors have already put limits on the tidal deformability and provided constraints on the ultra-high nuclear density EOS. In view of this ground breaking discovery, we revisit and extend our previous work [Phys. Rev. D 95, 101302(R) (2017)] which found that taking the effect of elasticity into account in the calculation of the ti…
The study of binary neutron stars mergers by the detection of the emitted gravitational waves is one of the most promised tools to study the properties of dense nuclear matter at high densities. It is worth claiming that, at the moment, strong evidence that the temperature of the stars is zero during the last orbits before coalescing, does not exist. Nevertheless, theoretical studies suggest that the temperature concerning the inspiral phase, could reach even a few MeV. According to the main theory, tides transfer mechanical energy and angular momentum to the star at the expense of the orbit, …
The study of neutron star mergers by the detection of the emitted gravitational waves is one of the most promised tools to study the properties of dense nuclear matter at high densities. It is worth claiming that, at the moment, strong evidence that the temperature of the stars is zero during the last orbits before coalescing does not exist. Contrariwise, there are some theoretical predictions suggesting that the star's temperature might even be a few MeV. According to the main theory, the tides transfer mechanical energy and angular momentum to the star at the expense of the orbit, where fric…
The tidal deformability of compact objects by a companion has a detectable imprint in the gravitational waves emitted by a binary system. This effect is governed by the so-called tidal Love numbers. For a particular theory of gravity, these depend solely on the object internal structure and they vanish for black holes in general relativity. A measurement compatible with nonzero tidal Love numbers could thus provide evidence of new physics in the strong-field regime. However, in realistic astrophysical scenarios, compact objects are surrounded by a nonvacuum environment. In this work, we study …
Gravitational waves from the coalescence of two neutron stars were recently detected for the first time by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration, in event GW170817. This detection placed an upper limit on the effective tidal deformability of the two neutron stars and tightly constrained the chirp mass of the system. We report here on a new simplification that arises in the effective tidal deformability of the binary, when the chirp mass is specified. We find that, in this case, the effective tidal deformability of the binary is surprisingly independent of the component masses of the individual neutron …
The constraints on tidal deformability $Λ$ of neutron stars are first extracted from GW170817 by LIGO and Virgo Collaborations but the relation between radius $R$ and tidal deformability $Λ$ is still nuder debate. Using an isospin-dependent parameterized equation of state (EOS), we study the relation between $R$ and $Λ$ of neutron stars and its dependence on parameters of symmetry energy $E_{\rm sym}$ and EOS of symmetric nuclear matter $E_0$ when the mass is fixed as $1.4$ $M_\odot$, $1.0$ $M_\odot$, and $1.8$ $M_\odot$, respectively. We find that, though the changes of high order parameters …
There is a growing interest in investigating modified theories of gravity, primarily, with the aim of explaining the universe's accelerated expansion, which has been confirmed by several independent observations. Compact objects, like neutron stars, exhibit strong gravity effects and therefore are used to study modified gravity theories. We use the $f(R)=R+aR^2$ model, where R is the Ricci scalar and $a$ is a free parameter. This model has been studied both perturbatively and non-perturbatively. However, it was found that perturbative methods results in nonphysical solutions for the neutron st…
We study the effect of superfluidity on the tidal response of a neutron star in a general relativistic framework. In this work, we take a dual-layer approach where the superfluid matter is confined in the core of the star. Then, the superfluid core is encapsulated with an envelope of ordinary matter fluid which acts effectively as the low-density crustal region of the star. In the core, the matter content is described by a two-fluid model where only the neutrons are taken as superfluid and the other fluid consists of protons and electrons making it charge neutral. We calculate the values of va…
Background: The nuclear symmetry energy $E_{sym}(ρ)$ encodes information about the energy necessary to make nuclear systems more neutron-rich. While its slope parameter L at the saturation density $ρ_0$ of nuclear matter has been relatively well constrained by recent astrophysical observations and terrestrial nuclear experiments, its curvature $K_{\rm{sym}}$ characterizing the $E_{sym}(ρ)$ around $2ρ_0$ remains largely unconstrained. Over 520 calculations for $E_{sym}(ρ)$ using various nuclear theories and interactions in the literature have predicted several significantly different $K_{\rm{sy…
This article is intended for undergraduate students with the aim to provide a pedagogical introduction to the physics of stellar tidal deformations. The spherically symmetric shape of any star is deformed via rotation around an arbitrary axis or by the presence of an external tidal field. We compute the ellipticity of such a stellar object and show that rotation can be treated analogously to tidal effects caused by an external field, which induces a quadrupole moment. The detection of gravitational waves from a binary neutron star merger in 2017 set constraints on the tidal deformability param…
The concept of boson stars (BSs) was first introduced by Kaup and Ruffini-Bonazzola in the 1960s. Following this idea, we investigate an effect of self-interacting asymmetric bosonic dark matter (DM) according to Colpi et al. model for BSs (1986) on different observable properties of neutron stars (NSs). In this paper, the bosonic DM and baryonic matter (BM) are mixed together and interact only through gravitational force. The presence of DM as a core of a compact star or as an extended halo around it is examined by applying different boson masses and DM fractions for a fixed coupling constant…
The early part of the gravitational wave signal of binary neutron star inspirals can potentially yield robust information on the nuclear equation of state. The influence of a star's internal structure on the waveform is characterized by a single parameter: the tidal deformability lambda, which measures the star's quadrupole deformation in response to the companion's perturbing tidal field. We calculate lambda for a wide range of equations of state and find that the value of lambda spans an order of magnitude for the range of equation of state models considered. An analysis of the feasibility o…
With the first detections of binary neutron star mergers by gravitational-wave detectors, it proves timely to consider how the internal structure of neutron stars affects the way in which they can be asymmetrically deformed. Such deformations may leave measurable imprints on gravitational-wave signals and can be sourced through tidal interactions or the formation of mountains. We detail the formalism that describes fully-relativistic neutron star models with elastic crusts undergoing static perturbations. This formalism primes the problem for studies into a variety of mechanisms that can defor…
We develop a Bayesian analysis method for selecting the most probable equation of state under a set of constraints from compact star physics, which now include the tidal deformability from GW170817. We apply this method for the first time to a two-parameter family of hybrid equations of state that is based on realistic models for the hadronic phase (KVORcut02) and the quark matter phase (SFM$α$) which produce a third family of hybrid stars in the mass-radius diagram. One parameter ($α$) characterizes the screening of the string tension in the string-flip model of quark matter while the other (…
The evolution of the gravitational-wave phase in the signal produced by inspiralling binaries of compact stars is modified by the nonzero deformability of the two stars. Hence, the measurement of these corrections has the potential of providing important information on the equation of state of nuclear matter. Extensive work has been carried out over the last decade to quantify these corrections, but it has so far been restricted to stars with zero intrinsic magnetic fields. While the corrections introduced by the magnetic tension and magnetic pressure are expected to be subdominant, it is neve…
The deformability of a compact object under the presence of a tidal perturbation is encoded in the tidal Love numbers (TLNs), which vanish for isolated black holes in vacuum. We show that the TLNs of black holes surrounded by matter fields do not vanish and can be used to probe the environment around binary black holes. In particular, we compute the TLNs for the case of a black hole surrounded by a scalar condensate under the presence of scalar and vector tidal perturbations, finding a strong power-law behavior of the TLN in terms of the mass of the scalar field. Using this result as a proxy f…
Strange quark matter, which is composed of u, d, and s quarks, could be the true ground of matter. According to this hypothesis, compact stars may actually be strange quark stars, and there may even be stable strange quark dwarfs and strange quark planets. The detection of the binary neutron star merger event GW170817 provides us new clues on the equation of state of compact stars. In this study, the tidal deformability of strange quark planets and strange quark dwarfs are calculated. It is found that the tidal deformability of strange quark objects is smaller than that of normal matter counte…

We revisit asteroseismology with quadrupolar wI modes and present universal relationships for its fundamental and first overtone. In contrast to relationships proposed in the literature, our universal relationships are capable of including slow stable hybrid stars that appear when considering slow sharp hadron-quark phase transitions. We show that, if the frequency and damping time of the fundamental mode of a given pulsating object are measured, its mass, radius, and dimensionless tidal deformability can be inferred. Moreover, we show that the errors of such estimates are smaller than a few p…
Though individual stellar parameters of compact stars usually demonstrate obvious dependence on the equation of state (EOS), EOS-insensitive universal formulas relating these parameters remarkably exist. In the present paper, we explore the interrelationship between two such formulas, namely the $f$-$I$ relation connecting the $f$-mode quadrupole oscillation frequency $ω_2$ and the moment of inertia $I$, and the $I$-Love-$Q$ relations relating $I$, the quadrupole tidal deformability $λ_2$, and the quadrupole moment $Q$, which have been proposed by Lau, Leung, and Lin [Astrophys. J. {\bf 714}, …
Gravitational wave measurements of binary neutron star coalescences offer information about the properties of the extreme matter that comprises the stars. Despite our expectation that all neutron stars in the Universe obey the same equation of state, i.e. the properties of the matter that forms them are universal, current tidal inference analyses treat the two bodies as independent. We present a method to measure the effect of tidal interactions in the gravitational wave signal -- and hence constrain the equation of state -- that assumes that the two binary components obey the same equation of…
We study the tidal deformability of bare quark stars and hybrid compact stars composed of a quark matter core in general relativity, assuming that the deconfined quark matter exists in a crystalline color superconducting phase. We find that taking the elastic property of crystalline quark matter into account in the calculation of the tidal deformability can break the universal I-Love relation discovered for fluid compact stars, which connects the moment of inertia and tidal deformability. Our result suggests that measurements of the moment of inertia and tidal deformability can in principle be…
The moment of inertia, the spin-induced quadrupole moment, and the tidal Love number of neutron-star and quark-star models are related through some relations which depend only mildly on the stellar equation of state. These "I-Love-Q" relations have important implications for astrophysics and gravitational-wave astronomy. An interesting problem is whether similar relations hold for other compact objects and how they approach the black-hole limit. To answer these questions, here we investigate the deformation properties of a large class of thin-shell gravastars, which are exotic compact objects …
