We study the effect of superfluidity on the tidal response of a neutron star in a general relativistic framework. In this work, we take a dual-layer approach where the superfluid matter is confined in the core of the star. Then, the superfluid core is encapsulated with an envelope of ordinary matter fluid which acts effectively as the low-density crustal region of the star. In the core, the matter content is described by a two-fluid model where only the neutrons are taken as superfluid and the other fluid consists of protons and electrons making it charge neutral. We calculate the values of various tidal love numbers of a neutron star and discuss how they are affected due to the presence of entrainment between the two fluids in the core. We also emphasize that more than one tidal parameter is necessary to probe superfluidity with the gravitational wave from the binary inspiral.
The LIGO collaboration recently reported the first gravitational-wave constraints on the tidal deformability of neutron stars. I discuss an inherent ambiguity in the notion of relativistic tidal deformability that, while too small to affect the present measurement, may become important in the future. I propose a new way to understand the ambiguity and discuss future prospects for reliably linking observed gravitational waveforms to compact object microphysics.
Universal relations independently of the equation of state (EOS) for neutron star matter are valuable, if they exist, for extracting the neutron star properties, which generally depend on the EOS. In this study, we newly derive the universal relations predicting the gravitational wave frequencies for the fundamental ($f$), the 1st pressure ($p_1$), and the 1st spacetime ($w_1$) modes and the damping rate for the $f$- and $w_1$-modes as a function of the dimensionless tidal deformability. In particular, with the universal relations for the $f$-modes one can predict the frequencies and damping r…
Finite size effects come into play during the late stages of neutron star binary inspiral, with the tidal deformability of the supranuclear density matter leaving an imprint on the gravitational-wave signal. As demonstrated in the case of GW170817, this leads to a constraint on the neutron star radius (and hence the equation of state). A deeper understanding of the tidal response requires an analysis of both the state and composition of matter. While these aspects may not have dramatic impact, they could lead to systematic effects that need to be kept in mind as the observational data become m…
(Abridged) It is well known that the tidal deformability of a compact star carries important information about the interior equation-of-state (EOS) of the star. The first gravitational-wave event GW170817 from a binary compact star merger observed by the LIGO/VIRGO detectors have already put limits on the tidal deformability and provided constraints on the ultra-high nuclear density EOS. In view of this ground breaking discovery, we revisit and extend our previous work [Phys. Rev. D 95, 101302(R) (2017)] which found that taking the effect of elasticity into account in the calculation of the ti…
We compute the equilibrium, the fundamental eigenfrequency of oscillations modes, and quadrupolar tidal deformability of anisotropic polytropic spheres. These studies are respectively performed through the numerical solution of the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equation, Chandrasekhar radial oscillation equations, and nonlinear first-order Riccati equation for tidal deformability, all modified from their original version to include the anisotropic effects. For the polytropic exponent $γ=2$ and the anisotropic model of Cattoen, Faber, and Visser, we show that the anisotropy could be reflected in t…
Constraints set on key parameters of the nuclear matter equation of state (EoS) by the values of the tidal deformability, inferred from GW170817, are examined by using a diverse set of relativistic and non-relativistic mean field models. These models are consistent with bulk properties of finite nuclei as well as with the observed lower bound on the maximum mass of neutron star $\sim 2 ~ {\rm M}_\odot$. The tidal deformability shows a strong correlation with specific linear combinations of the isoscalar and isovector nuclear matter parameters associated with the EoS. Such correlations suggest …
There is a growing interest in investigating modified theories of gravity, primarily, with the aim of explaining the universe's accelerated expansion, which has been confirmed by several independent observations. Compact objects, like neutron stars, exhibit strong gravity effects and therefore are used to study modified gravity theories. We use the $f(R)=R+aR^2$ model, where R is the Ricci scalar and $a$ is a free parameter. This model has been studied both perturbatively and non-perturbatively. However, it was found that perturbative methods results in nonphysical solutions for the neutron st…
In this work, we investigate the influence of the phase transition and a stiffer fluid in neutron stars' cores on the static equilibrium configuration, dynamical stability, and tidal deformability. For this aim, it is taken into account that the fluid in the core and the envelope follow the relativistic polytropic equation of state. We find that the phase transition and a stiffer fluid in the core will reflect in the total mass, radius, speed of sound, core radius, radial stability with a slow and rapid conversion at the interface, and tidal deformability. We also investigate the dimensionless…
The early part of the gravitational wave signal of binary neutron star inspirals can potentially yield robust information on the nuclear equation of state. The influence of a star's internal structure on the waveform is characterized by a single parameter: the tidal deformability lambda, which measures the star's quadrupole deformation in response to the companion's perturbing tidal field. We calculate lambda for a wide range of equations of state and find that the value of lambda spans an order of magnitude for the range of equation of state models considered. An analysis of the feasibility o…
The evolution of the gravitational-wave phase in the signal produced by inspiralling binaries of compact stars is modified by the nonzero deformability of the two stars. Hence, the measurement of these corrections has the potential of providing important information on the equation of state of nuclear matter. Extensive work has been carried out over the last decade to quantify these corrections, but it has so far been restricted to stars with zero intrinsic magnetic fields. While the corrections introduced by the magnetic tension and magnetic pressure are expected to be subdominant, it is neve…
In this work we consider minimally-coupled boson stars immersed in a tidal environment and compute their tidal deformability to leading order. We also describe an approximate correspondence between Newtonian boson star configurations (described by the Schrödinger-Poisson equations) and dynamical dark matter clumps (described by the collisionless Boltzmann equation). This allows us to map our results for the tidal deformability of boson stars to approximate statements for dark matter clumps.
The tidal deformability of compact objects by a companion has a detectable imprint in the gravitational waves emitted by a binary system. This effect is governed by the so-called tidal Love numbers. For a particular theory of gravity, these depend solely on the object internal structure and they vanish for black holes in general relativity. A measurement compatible with nonzero tidal Love numbers could thus provide evidence of new physics in the strong-field regime. However, in realistic astrophysical scenarios, compact objects are surrounded by a nonvacuum environment. In this work, we study …
One of the main targets for ground-based gravitational wave (GW) detectors such as Advanced LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory) and Virgo is coalescences of neutron star (NS) binaries. Even though a NS's macroscopic properties such as mass and radius have been obtained from electro-magnetic wave observations, its internal structure has been studied mainly by using theoretical approaches. However, with the advent of Advanced LIGO and Virgo, the tidal deformability of a NS, which depends on the internal structure of the NS, has been recently obtained from GW observations. …
We find that the Hanford and Livingston detectors of Advanced LIGO derive a distinct posterior probability distribution of binary tidal deformability tilde{Lambda} of the first binary-neutron-star merger GW170817. By analyzing public data of GW170817 with a nested-sampling engine and the default TaylorF2 waveform provided by the LALInference package, the probability distribution of the binary tidal deformability derived by the LIGO-Virgo detector network turns out to be determined dominantly by the Hanford detector. Specifically, by imposing the flat prior on tidal deformability of individual …
Despite their long history and astrophysical importance, some of the key properties of neutron stars are still uncertain. The extreme conditions encountered in their interiors, involving matter of uncertain composition at extreme density and isospin asymmetry, uniquely determine the stars' macroscopic properties within General Relativity. Astrophysical constraints on those macroscopic properties, such as neutron star masses and radii, have long been used to understand the microscopic properties of the matter that forms them. In this article we discuss another astrophysically observable macrosc…
Though individual stellar parameters of compact stars usually demonstrate obvious dependence on the equation of state (EOS), EOS-insensitive universal formulas relating these parameters remarkably exist. In the present paper, we explore the interrelationship between two such formulas, namely the $f$-$I$ relation connecting the $f$-mode quadrupole oscillation frequency $ω_2$ and the moment of inertia $I$, and the $I$-Love-$Q$ relations relating $I$, the quadrupole tidal deformability $λ_2$, and the quadrupole moment $Q$, which have been proposed by Lau, Leung, and Lin [Astrophys. J. {\bf 714}, …
We revisit the lower bound on binary tidal deformability tilde{Lambda} imposed by a luminous kilonova/macronova, AT 2017gfo, by numerical-relativity simulations of models that are consistent with gravitational waves from the binary neutron star merger GW170817. Contrary to the claim made in the literature, we find that binaries with tilde{Lambda}<~400 can explain the luminosity of AT 2017gfo, as long as moderate mass ejection from the remnant is assumed as had been done in previous work. The reason is that the maximum mass of a neutron star is not strongly correlated with the tidal deformabili…
We study how to extract information on the neutron star equation of state from the gravitational wave signal emitted during the coalescence of a binary system composed of two neutron stars or a neutron star and a black hole. We use post-Newtonian templates which include the tidal deformability parameter and, when tidal disruption occurs before merger, a frequency cut-off. Assuming that this signal is detected by Advanced LIGO/Virgo or ET, we evaluate the uncertainties on these parameters using different data analysis strategies based on the Fisher matrix approach, and on recently obtained anal…
One of the macroscopically measurable effects of gravity is the tidal deformability of astrophysical objects, which can be quantified by their tidal Love numbers. For planets and stars, these numbers measure the resistance of their material against the tidal forces, and the resulting contribution to their gravitational multipole moments. According to general relativity, nonrotating deformed black holes, instead, show no addition to their gravitational multipole moments, and all of their Love numbers are zero. In this paper we explore different configurations of nonrotating compact and ultracom…
Gravitational wave measurements of binary neutron star coalescences offer information about the properties of the extreme matter that comprises the stars. Despite our expectation that all neutron stars in the Universe obey the same equation of state, i.e. the properties of the matter that forms them are universal, current tidal inference analyses treat the two bodies as independent. We present a method to measure the effect of tidal interactions in the gravitational wave signal -- and hence constrain the equation of state -- that assumes that the two binary components obey the same equation of…
The moment of inertia, the spin-induced quadrupole moment, and the tidal Love number of neutron-star and quark-star models are related through some relations which depend only mildly on the stellar equation of state. These "I-Love-Q" relations have important implications for astrophysics and gravitational-wave astronomy. An interesting problem is whether similar relations hold for other compact objects and how they approach the black-hole limit. To answer these questions, here we investigate the deformation properties of a large class of thin-shell gravastars, which are exotic compact objects …
The chi-squared based covariance approach allows one to estimate the correlations among desired observables related to nuclear matter directly from a set of fit data without taking recourse to the distributions of the nuclear matter parameters (NMPs). Such an approach is applied to study the correlations of tidal deformability of neutron star with the slope and the curvature parameters of nuclear symmetry energy governed by an extensive set of fit data on the finite nuclei together with the maximum mass of the neutron star. The knowledge of the distributions of NMPs consistent with the fit dat…
The deformability of a compact object under the presence of a tidal perturbation is encoded in the tidal Love numbers (TLNs), which vanish for isolated black holes in vacuum. We show that the TLNs of black holes surrounded by matter fields do not vanish and can be used to probe the environment around binary black holes. In particular, we compute the TLNs for the case of a black hole surrounded by a scalar condensate under the presence of scalar and vector tidal perturbations, finding a strong power-law behavior of the TLN in terms of the mass of the scalar field. Using this result as a proxy f…
Unimodular gravity is a modified theory with respect to general relativity by an extra condition that the determinant of the metric is fixed. Especially, if the energy-momentum tensor is not imposed to be conserved separately, a new geometric structure appears with potentially observational signatures. In this paper, we study tidal deformability of compact star in the unimodular gravity under the assumption of non-conserved energy-momentum tensor. Both the electric-type and magnetic-type quadrupole tidal Love numbers are calculated for neutron stars with polytrope model. It is found that the e…
A principal goal of gravitational-wave astronomy is to constrain the neutron star equation of state (EOS) by measuring the tidal deformability of neutron stars. The tidally induced departure of the waveform from that of point-particle (or spinless binary black hole (BBH)) increases with the stiffness of the EOS. We show that causality (the requirement that the speed of sound is less than the speed of light for a perfect fluid satisfying a one-parameter equation of state) places an upper bound on tidal deformability as a function of mass. Like the upper mass limit, the limit on deformabity is o…
Motivated by events in which black holes can lose their environment due to tidal interactions in a binary system, we develop a waveform model in which the tidal deformability interpolates between a finite value (dressed black hole) at relatively low frequency and a zero value (naked black hole) at high frequency. We then apply this model to the example case of a black hole dressed with an ultralight scalar field and investigate the detectability of the tidal Love number with the Einstein Telescope. We show that the parameters of the tidal deformability model could be measured with high accurac…
We study the tidal deformability of bare quark stars and hybrid compact stars composed of a quark matter core in general relativity, assuming that the deconfined quark matter exists in a crystalline color superconducting phase. We find that taking the elastic property of crystalline quark matter into account in the calculation of the tidal deformability can break the universal I-Love relation discovered for fluid compact stars, which connects the moment of inertia and tidal deformability. Our result suggests that measurements of the moment of inertia and tidal deformability can in principle be…

Gravitational-wave measurements of the tidal deformability of neutron stars could reveal important information regarding their internal structure, the equation of state of high-dense nuclear matter and gravity in strong field regime. In this work, we extend the relativistic theory of the tidal deformability of neutron stars to Rastall gravity. Both the electric-type and magnetic-type quadrupole tidal Love numbers are calculated for neutron stars in the polytrope model. It is found that neutron star's tidal Love numbers in Rastall gravity is significantly smaller than those in general relativit…
The upper bound of the speed of sound in dense nuclear matter is one of the most interesting but still unsolved problems in Nuclear Physics. Theoretical studies in connection with recent observational data of isolated neutron stars as well as binary neutron stars systems offer an excellent opportunity to shed light on this problem. In the present work, we suggest a method to directly relate the measured tidal deformability (polarizability) of binary neutron stars system (before merger) to the maximum neutron star mass scenario and possible upper bound on the speed of sound. This method is base…
We construct dark energy stars with Chaplygin-type equation of state (EoS) in the presence of anisotropic pressure within the framework of Einstein gravity. From the classification established by Iyer et al. [Class. Quantum Grav. 2, 219 (1985)], we discuss the possible existence of isotropic dark energy stars as compact objects. However, there is the possibility of constructing ultra-compact stars for sufficiently large anisotropies. We investigate the stellar stability against radial oscillations, and we also determine the moment of inertia and tidal deformability of these stars. We find that…
We use gravitational wave (GW) and electromagnetic (EM) observations of GW170817 to constrain the extent of pressure anisotropy in it. While it is quite likely that the pressure inside a neutron star is mostly isotropic, certain physical processes or characteristics, such as phase transitions in nuclear matter or the presence of strong magnetic fields, can introduce pressure anisotropy. In this work, we show that anisotropic pressure in neutron stars can reduce their tidal deformability substantially. For the anisotropy-pressure model of Bowers and Liang and a couple of relativistic EOSs -- DD…
We estimate the accuracy in the measurement of the tidal Love number of a supermassive compact object through the detection of an extreme mass ratio inspiral~(EMRI) by the future LISA mission. A nonzero Love number would be a smoking gun for departures from the classical black hole prediction of General Relativity. We find that an EMRI detection by LISA could set constraints on the tidal Love number of a spinning central object with dimensionless spin $\hat a=0.9$ ($\hat a=0.99$) which are approximately four (six) orders of magnitude more stringent than what achievable with current ground-base…

We relate the fundamental quadrupolar fluid mode of isolated non-rotating NSs and the dominant oscillation frequency of neutron star merger remnants. Both frequencies individually are known to correlate with certain stellar parameters like radii or the tidal deformability, which we further investigate by constructing fit formulae and quantifying the scatter of the data points from those relations. Furthermore, we compare how individual data points deviate from the corresponding fit to all data points. Considering this point-to-point scatter we uncover a striking similarity between the frequenc…
The discovery of gravitational waves (GW) by Advanced LIGO has ushered us into an era of observational GW astrophysics. Compact binaries remain the primary target sources for LIGO, of which neutron star-black hole (NSBH) binaries form an important subset. GWs from NSBH sources carry signatures of (a) the tidal distortion of the neutron star by its companion black hole during inspiral, and (b) its potential tidal disruption near merger. In this paper, we present a Bayesian study of the measurability of neutron star tidal deformability $Λ_\mathrm{NS}\propto (R/M)^{5}$ using observation(s) of ins…
The concept of boson stars (BSs) was first introduced by Kaup and Ruffini-Bonazzola in the 1960s. Following this idea, we investigate an effect of self-interacting asymmetric bosonic dark matter (DM) according to Colpi et al. model for BSs (1986) on different observable properties of neutron stars (NSs). In this paper, the bosonic DM and baryonic matter (BM) are mixed together and interact only through gravitational force. The presence of DM as a core of a compact star or as an extended halo around it is examined by applying different boson masses and DM fractions for a fixed coupling constant…

After the detection of gravitational waves caused by the coalescence of compact objects in the mass range of neutron stars, GW170817, several studies have searched for an imprint of tidal effects in the signal, employing different model assumptions. One important distinction is whether or not to assume that both objects are neutron stars and obey the same equation of state. Some studies assumed independent properties. Others assume a universal equation of state, and in addition that the tidal deformability follows certain phenomenological relations. An important question is whether the gravita…
Using parametric equations of state (relativistic polytropes and a simple quark bag model) to model dense-matter phase transitions, we study global, measurable astrophysical parameters of compact stars such as their allowed radii and tidal deformabilities. We also investigate the influence of stiffness of matter before the onset of the phase transitions on the parameters of the possible exotic dense phase. The aim of our study is to compare the parameter space of the dense matter equation of state permitting phase transitions to a sub-space compatible with current observational constraints suc…
