Classical multiple zeta values can be viewed as iterated integrals of the differentials $\frac{dt}{t}, \frac{dt}{1-t}$ from $0$ to $1$. In this paper, we reprove Brown's theorem: For $a_i, b_i, c_{ij}\in \mathbb{Z}$, the iterated integral of the form
\[
\mathop{\int\cdots \int}\limits_{0<t_1<\cdots<t_N<1}\prod_i t_i^{a_i}(1-t_i)^{b_i} \prod_{i<j}(t_j-t_i)^{c_{ij}}dt_1\cdots dt_N \]
is a $\mathbb{Q}$-linear combination of multiple zeta values of weight $\leq N$ if convergent.
What is more, we show that if $p_i(t), 1\leq i\leq N, $ are in a $\mathbb{Q}\left[t,1/t, 1/(1-t)\right]$-algebra generated by multiple polylogarithms and their dual,
and if $q_{ij}(t), 1\leq i<j\leq N$, are in a $\mathbb{Q}\left[ t,1/t\right]$-algebra generated by logarithm, then the iterated integral
\[
\mathop{\int\cdots \int}\limits_{0<t_1<\cdots<t_N<1}\prod_i p_i(t_i)\prod_{i<j}q_{ij}(t_j-t_i)dt_1\cdots dt_N \]
is a $\mathbb{Q}$-linear combination of multiple zeta values.
As an application of our main results, we show that the coefficients of the Taylor expansions of the Selberg integrals \[
\mathop{\int\cdots\int}_{0<t_1<\cdots<t_N<1}f\prod_it_i^{α_i}(1-t_i)^{β_i}\prod_{i<j}(t_j-t_i)^{γ_{ij}}
dt_1\cdots dt_N \] (with respect to $α_i,β_i,γ_{ij}$) at the integral points in some product of right half complex plane are $\mathbb{Q}$-linear combinations of multiple zeta values for any $$f\in \mathbb{Q}[t_i, t_i^{-1},(t_i-t_j)^{-1}| 1\leq i\leq N, 1\leq i<j\leq N].$$ This statement generalizes Terasoma's original result.
We present the first example of the Selberg type zeta function for noncompact higher rank locally symmetric spaces. We study certain Selberg type zeta functions and Ruelle type zeta functions attached to the Hilbert modular group of a real quadratic field. We show that they have meromorphic extensions to the whole complex plane and satisfy functional equations. The method is based on considering the differences among several Selberg trace formulas with different weights for the Hilbert modular group. Besides as an application of the differences of the Selberg trace formula, we also obtain an a…
By a similar idea for the construction of Milnor's gamma functions, we introduce "higher depth determinants" of the Laplacian on a compact Riemann surface of genus greater than one. We prove that, as a generalization of the determinant expression of the Selberg zeta function, this higher depth determinant can be expressed as a product of multiple gamma functions and what we call a Milnor-Selberg zeta function. It is shown that the Milnor-Selberg zeta function admits an analytic continuation, a functional equation and, remarkably, has an Euler product.
In this note we prove that the Selberg zeta-function associated to a compact Riemann surface is pseudo-prime and right-prime in the sense of a decomposition.
For a compact Riemann surface $M$ of genus $g\ge 2$, we study the functional equations of the Selberg zeta functions attached with the Tate motives $f$. We prove that certain functional equations hold if and only if $f$ has the absolute automorphy.
We prove that for a compact locally symmetric Riemannian space $M$ of rank 1 there exist infinitely many automorphic Tate motives $f$ such that the generalized Selberg zeta function $Z_{M(f)}(s)$ satisfies a simple functional equation in the sense that it has no gamma factors.
In one of his final research papers, Alan Turing introduced a method to certify the completeness of a purported list of zeros of the Riemann zeta-function. In this paper we consider Turing's method in the analogous setting of Selberg zeta-functions, and we demonstrate that it can be carried out rigorously in the prototypical case of the modular surface.
Levinson and Montgomery proved that the Riemann zeta-function $ζ(s)$ and its derivative have approximately the same number of non-real zeros left of the critical line. R. Spira showed that $ζ'(1/2+it)=0$ implies $ζ(1/2+it)=0$. Here we obtain that in small areas located to the left of the critical line and near it the functions $ζ(s)$ and $ζ'(s)$ have the same number of zeros. We prove our result for more general zeta-functions from the extended Selberg class $S$. We also consider zero trajectories of a certain family of zeta-functions from $S$.
The present paper is a report on joint work with Alessandro Languasco and Alberto Perelli on our recent investigations on the Selberg integral and its connections to Montgomery's pair-correlation function. We introduce a more general form of the Selberg integral and connect it to a new pair-correlation function, emphasising its relations to the distribution of prime numbers in short intervals.
This is an expanded version of the author's lecture at the XX Congresso U.M.I., held in Siena in September 2015. After a brief review of L-functions, we turn to the classical converse theorems of H.Hamburger, E.Hecke and A.Weil, and to some later developments. Finally we present several results on converse theorems in the framework of the Selberg class of L-functions.
Let $Γ\backslash\mathbb H^3$ be a finite-volume quotient of the upper-half space, where $Γ\subset {\rm SL}(2,\mathbb C)$ is a discrete subgroup. To a finite dimensional unitary representation $χ$ of $Γ$ one associates the Selberg zeta function $Z(s;Γ;χ)$. In this paper we prove the Artin formalism for the Selberg zeta function. Namely, if $\tildeΓ$ is a finite index group extension of $Γ$ in ${\rm SL}(2,\mathbb C)$, and $π={\rm Ind}_Γ^{\tildeΓ}χ$ is the induced representation, then $Z(s;Γ;χ)=Z(s;\tildeΓ;π)$. In the second part of the paper we prove by a direct method the analogous identity for…
For cofinite Kleinian groups, with finite-dimensional unitary representations, we derive the Selberg trace formula. As an application we define the corresponding Selberg zeta-function and compute its divisor, thus generalizing results of Elstrodt, Grunewald and Mennicke to non-trivial unitary representations. We show that the presence of cuspidal elliptic elements sometimes adds ramification point to the zeta function. In fact, if D is the ring of Eisenstein integers, then the Selberg zeta-function of PSL(2,D) contains ramification points.

We deeply appreciate the papers of Ivić on the links between the $2k-$th moments of the Riemann zeta function and, say, $d_k$, the $k-$divisor function. More specifically, both the one bounding the $2k-$th moment with a simple average of correlations of the $d_k$ (Palanga 1996 Conference Proceedings) and the more recent (arXiv:0708.1601v2 to appear on JTNB), which bounds the Selberg integral of $d_k$ applying the $2k-$th moment of the zeta. Building on the former paper, we apply an elementary approach (based on arithmetic averages) in order to get information on the reverse link to the second …
W. Luo has investigated the distribution of zeros of the derivative of the Selberg zeta function associated to compact hyperbolic Riemann surfaces. In essence, the main results in Luo's article involve the following three points: Finiteness for the number of zeros in the half plane to the left of the critical line; an asymptotic expansion for the counting function measuring the vertical distribution of zeros; and an asymptotic expansion for the counting function measuring the horizontal distance of zeros from the critical line. In the present article, we study the more complicated setting of d…
In this note, we prove Selberg's announced result on $r$-gaps between zeros of the Riemann zeta-function $ζ$. Our proof uses a result on variations of $\argζ$ by Tsang based on Selberg's method. The same result with explicit constants under the Riemann Hypothesis has been obtained by Conrey and Turnage-Butterbaugh using a different method. We explain how to obtain explicit constants under the Riemann Hypothesis using our approach which is based on Selberg's and Tsang's arguments.
In this paper, a heuristic method to compute the Selberg zeta function for Hecke triangle groups, $G_q$ ($q>=3$) is described. The algorithm is based on the transfer operator method and an overview of the relevant background is given. We give numerical support for the claim that the method works and can be used to compute the Selberg Zeta function for $G_q$ to any desired precision. We also present some numerical results obtained by implementing the algorithm.
As a generalization of the results [KW3],we study the functional equation of the higher Selberg zeta function for congruence subgroups. To obtain the gamma factor of this function, we introduce a higher Dirichlet $L$-function. Then we determine the gamma factor explicitly in terms of the Barnes triple gamma function and the higher Dirichlet $L$-function.
We introduce a Selberg type zeta function of two variables which interpolates several higher Selberg zeta functions. The analytic continuation, the functional equation and the determinant expression of this function via the Laplacian on a Riemann surface are obtained.
In this paper, we will give a certain formula for the Riemann zeta function that expresses the Riemann zeta function by an infinte series consisting of $K$-Bessel functions. Such an infinite series expression can be regarded as an analogue of the Chowla-Selberg formula. Roughly speaking, the Chowla-Selberg formula is the formula that expresses the Epstein zeta-function by an infinite series consisting of $K$-Bessel functions. In addition, we also give certain analogues of the Chowla-Selberg formula for Dirichlet $L$-functions and $L$-functions associated with holomorphic cusp forms. Moreover, …
Let $Λ= \{λ_{k}\}$ denote a sequence of complex numbers and assume that that the counting function $#\{λ_{k} \in Λ: | λ_{k}| < T\} =O(T^{n})$ for some integer $n$. From Hadamard's theorem, we can construct an entire function $f$ of order at most $n$ such that $Λ$ is the divisor $f$. In this article we prove, under reasonably general conditions, that the superzeta function $\Z_{f}(s,z)$ associated to $Λ$ admits a meromorphic continuation. Furthermore, we describe the relation between the regularized product of the sequence $z-Λ$ and the function $f$ as constructed as a Weierstrass product. In t…
In Sarnak's paper, it was proved that the Selberg zeta function for SL(2,Z) is expressed in terms of the fundamental units and the class numbers of the primitive indefinite binary quadratic forms. The aim of this paper is to obtain similar arithmetic expressions of the logarithmic derivatives of the Selberg zeta functions for congruence subgroups of SL(2,Z). As applications, we study the Brun-Titchmarsh type prime geodesic theorem, the asymptotic behavior of the sum of the class number.
We study the asymptotic behavior of zeros of the Selberg zeta-function for the congruence subgroup $Γ_0(4)$ as a function of a one-parameter family of characters tending to the trivial character. The motivation for the study comes from observations based on numerical computations. Some of the observed phenomena lead to precise theorems that we prove and compare with the original numerical results.
We introduce an iterated integral version of (generalized) log-sine integrals (iterated log-sine integrals) and prove a relation between a multiple polylogarithm and iterated log-sine integrals. We also give a new method for obtaining relations among multiple zeta values, which uses iterated log-sine integrals, and give alternative proofs of several known results related to multiple zeta values and log-sine integrals.
We initiate the study of Selberg zeta functions $Z_{Γ,χ}$ for geometrically finite Fuchsian groups $Γ$ and finite-dimensional representations $χ$ with non-expanding cusp monodromy. We show that for all choices of $(Γ,χ)$, the Selberg zeta function $Z_{Γ,χ}$ converges on some half-plane in $\mathbb{C}$. In addition, under the assumption that $Γ$ admits a strict transfer operator approach, we show that $Z_{Γ,χ}$ extends meromorphically to all of $\mathbb{C}$.
For Kleinian groups acting on hyperbolic three-space, we prove factorization formulas for both the Selberg zeta-function and the automorphic scattering matrix. We extend results of Venkov and Zograf from Fuchsian groups, to Kleinian groups, and we give a proof that is simple and extendable to more general groups.
It is known that the Selberg zeta function for the modular group has an expression in terms of the class numbers and the fundamental units of the indefinite binary quadratic forms. In the present paper, we generalize such a expression to any congruence subgroup of the modular groups in SL(2,R) and SL(2,C).
In this paper, we prove the universality theorem for the iterated integrals of the logarithm of the Riemann zeta-function on some line parallel to the real axis.
Let $\CmZ_{Y_0(N)}$ be the constant term of the logarithmic derivative at $s=1$ of the Selberg zeta function of the modular curve $Y_0(N)$. Jorgenson and Kramer established the bound $\CmZ_{Y_0(N)}=O_ε(N^ε)$, $ε>0$ by relating it to geometric invariants. In this article we give, for $N$ prime, another proof via $L$-functions and exponential sums improving on a previous approach by Abbes-Ullmo and Michel-Ullmo. We further derive a power of $\log N$ bound along the same line.
We characterize Maass cusp forms for any cofinite Hecke triangle group as 1-eigenfunctions of appropriate regularity of a transfer operator family. This transfer operator family is associated to a certain symbolic dynamics for the geodesic flow on the orbifold arising as the orbit space of the action of the Hecke triangle group on the hyperbolic plane. Moreover we show that the Selberg zeta function is the Fredholm determinant of the transfer operator family associated to an acceleration of this symbolic dynamics.
Over the last few years Pohl (partly jointly with coauthors) developed dual `slow/fast' transfer operator approaches to automorphic functions, resonances, and Selberg zeta functions for a certain class of hyperbolic surfaces $Γ\backslash\mathbb{H}$ with cusps and all finite-dimensional unitary representations $χ$ of $Γ$. The eigenfunctions with eigenvalue $1$ of the fast transfer operators determine the zeros of the Selberg zeta function for $(Γ,χ)$. Further, if $Γ$ is cofinite and $χ$ is the trivial one-dimensional representation then highly regular eigenfunctions with eigenvalue $1$ of the s…
We describe a decomposition algorithm for elliptic multiple zeta values, which amounts to the construction of an injective map $ψ$ from the algebra of elliptic multiple zeta values to a space of iterated Eisenstein integrals. We give many examples of this decomposition, and conclude with a short discussion about the image of $ψ$. It turns out that the failure of surjectivity of $ψ$ is in some sense governed by period polynomials of modular forms.
This paper gives some results for the logarithm of the Riemann zeta-function and its iterated integrals. We obtain a certain explicit approximation formula for these functions. The formula has some applications, which are related with the value distribution of these functions and a relation between prime numbers and the distribution of zeros in short intervals.
We provide an explicit construction of a cross section for the geodesic flow on infinite-area Hecke triangle surfaces which allows us to conduct a transfer operator approach to the Selberg zeta function. Further we construct closely related cross sections for the billiard flow on the associated triangle surfaces and endow the arising discrete dynamical systems and transfer operator families with two weight functions which presumably encode Dirichlet respectively Neumann boundary conditions. The Fredholm determinants of these transfer operator families constitute dynamical zeta functions, which…
Using Hecke triangle surfaces of finite and infinite area as examples, we present techniques for thermodynamic formalism approaches to Selberg zeta functions with unitary finite-dimensional representations $(V,χ)$ for hyperbolic surfaces (orbifolds) $Γ\backslash\mathbb{H}$ as well as transfer operator techniques to develop period-like functions for $(Γ,χ)$-automorphic cusp forms. This leads to several natural conjectures. We further show how to extend these results to the billiard flow on the underlying triangle surfaces, and study the convergence of transfer operators along sequences of Hecke…
It is known that multiple zeta values can be written in terms of certain iterated log-sine integrals. Conversely, we evaluate iterated log-sine integrals in terms of multiple polylogarithms and multiple zeta values in this paper. We also suggest some conjectures on multiple zeta values, multiple Clausen values, multiple Glaisher values and iterated log-sine integrals.
We consider iterated integrals of $\logζ(s)$ on certain vertical and horizontal lines. Here, the function $ζ(s)$ is the Riemann zeta-function. It is a well known open problem whether or not the values of the Riemann zeta-function on the critical line are dense in the complex plane. In this paper, we give a result for the denseness of the values of the iterated integrals on the horizontal lines. By using this result, we obtain the denseness of the values of $\int_{0}^{t} \log ζ(1/2 + it')dt'$ under the Riemann Hypothesis. Moreover, we show that, for any $m\geq 2$, the denseness of the values of…
We prove that there is an isomorphism between the Hopf Algebra of Feynman diagrams and the Hopf algebra corresponding to the Homogenous Multiple Zeta Value ring H in C<<X,Y>> . In other words, Feynman diagrams evaluate to Multiple Zeta Values in all cases. This proves a recent conjecture of Connes-Kreimer, and others including Broadhurst and Kontsevich. The key step of our theorem is to present the Selberg integral as discussed in Terasoma [22] as a Functional from the Rooted Trees Operad to the Hopf algebra of Multiple Zeta Values. This is a new construction which provides illumination to the…
In this paper we show that the iterated integrals on products of one variable multiple polylogarithms from 0 to 1 are actually multiple zeta values if they are convergent. In the divergent case, we define regularized iterated integrals from 0 to 1. By the same method, we show that the regularized iterated integrals are also multiple zeta values. As an application, we give new series representations for multiple zeta values and calculate some interesting examples of iterated integrals.
We describe iterated integrals as unipotent periods on families of marked elliptic curves in terms of multiple zeta values and elliptic multiple zeta values.

In this paper we give two idelic representations of the multiple zeta values - one using iterated integrals over the finite ideles and the other using iterated integrals over the idele class group. Each of the representations leads to a shuffle relation. Thus, we recover in a unified way the two types of shuffle relations of multiple zeta values via the iterated integrals over finite ideles and via iterated integrals over the idele class group.
We prove that the meromorphic continuations of the Ruelle and Selberg zeta functions considered by Bunke and Olbrich are of finite order not larger than the dimension of the underlaying compact, odd-dimensional, locally symmetric space.
In this paper we consider iterated integrals on $\mathbb{P}^{1}\setminus\{0,1,\infty,z\}$ and define a class of $\mathbb{Q}$-linear relations among them, which arises from the differential structure of the iterated integrals with respect to $z$. We then define a new class of $\mathbb{Q}$-linear relations among the multiple zeta values by taking their limits of $z\rightarrow1$, which we call \emph{confluence relations} (i.e., the relations obtained by the confluence of two punctured points). One of the significance of the confluence relations is that it gives a rich family and seems to exhaust …
We derive approximate formulas for the logarithmic de- rivative of the Selberg and Ruelle zeta functions over compact, even- dimensional, locally symmetric spaces of rank one. The obtained for- mulas are given in terms of the zeta-singularities.
We prove explicit formulae for $α$-points of $L$-functions from the Selberg class. Next we extend a theorem of Littlewood on the vertical distribution of zeros of the Riemann zeta-function $ζ(s)$ to the case of $α$-points of the aforementioned $L$-functions. This result implies the uniform distribution of subsequences of $α$-points and from this a discrete universality theorem in the spirit of Voronin is derived.
Brown showed that the affine ring of the motivic path torsor $π_1^{\text{mot}}(\mathbb{P}^1 \backslash \left\{0,1,\infty\right\}, \vec{1}_0, -\vec{1}_1)$, whose periods are multiple zeta values, generates the Tannakian category $\mathsf{MT}(\mathbb{Z})$ of mixed Tate motives over $\mathbb{Z}$. Brown also introduced multiple modular values, which are periods of the relative completion of the fundamental group of the moduli stack $\mathcal{M}_{1,1}$ of elliptic curves. We prove that all motivic multiple zeta values may be expressed as $\mathbb{Q}[2 πi]$-linear combinations of motivic iterated Ei…
Multiple $T$-values, a variant of multiple zeta values of level two, were introduced and studied by Kaneko and Tsumura. This paper will introduce iterated log-tangent integrals and discuss their relations with multiple $T$-values. We will use ideas from the author's previous work on multiple zeta values and iterated log-sine integrals to do so.
