We present a flexible family of 3D mobility models suitable for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). Based on stochastic differential equations, the models offer a unique property of explicitly incorporating the mobility control mechanism and environmental perturbation, while enabling tractable steady state solutions for properties such as position and connectivity. Specifically, motivated by UAV flight data, for a symmetric mobility model with an arbitrary control mechanism, we derive the steady state distribution of the distance from the target position. We provide closed form expressions for the special cases of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (OU) process and on-off control (OC). We extend the model to incorporate imperfect positioning and asymmetric control. For a practically relevant scenario of partial symmetry (such as in the x-y plane), we present steady state position results for the OU control. Building on these results, we derive UAV connectivity probability results based on a SNR criterion in a Rayleigh fading environment.
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can be powerful Internet-of-Things components to execute sensing tasks over the next-generation cellular networks, which are generally referred to as the cellular Internet of UAVs. However, due to the high mobility of UAVs and the shadowing in the air-to-ground channels, UAVs operate in an environment with dynamics and uncertainties. Therefore, UAVs need to improve the quality of service (QoS) of sensing and communication without complete information, which makes reinforcement learning suitable to be employed in the cellular Internet of UAVs. In this article, we…

The measurement results show that the average RCS of the UAVs depends on shape, size, material composition of the target UAV as well as the azimuth angle, frequency, and polarization of the illuminating radar. Afterward, radar characteriza…

In particular, UAVs in a swarm can utilize wireless communications to collect information, like velocity and heading angle, from surrounding UAVs for coordinating their operations and maintaining target speed and intra-UAV distance. However, due to the uncertainty of the wireless channel, wireless communications among UAVs will experience a transmission delay which can impair the swarm's ability to stab…

Providing reliable connectivity to cellular-connected UAV can be very challenging; their performance highly depends on the nature of the surrounding environment, such as density and heights of the ground BSs. On the other hand, tall buildings might block undesired interference signals from ground BSs, thereby improving the connectivity between the UAVs and their serving BSs. To address the connectivity of UAVs in such environments, this paper proposes a RL algorithm to dynamically optimise the height of a UAV as it moves through the environment, with the goal of increasing the throughput or sp…

Several solutions have been proposed in the literature to address the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) collision avoidance problem. Most of these solutions consider that the ground controller system (GCS) determines the path of a UAV before starting a particular mission at hand. Furthermore, these solutions expect the occurrence of collisions based only on the GPS localization of UAVs as well as via object-detecting sensors placed on board UAVs. The sensors' sensitivity to environmental disturbances and the UAVs' influence on their accuracy impact negatively the efficiency of these solutions. I…

In this paper, we consider the cellular Internet of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), where UAVs sense data for multiple tasks and transmit the data to the base station (BS). To quantify the "freshness" of the data at the BS, we bring in the concept of the age of information (AoI). The AoI is determined by the time for UAV sensing and that for UAV transmission, and gives rise to a trade-off within a given period. To minimize the AoI, we formulate a joint sensing time, transmission time, UAV trajectory, and task scheduling optimization problem. To solve this problem, we first propose an iterativ…

One of the major restrictions on the practical applications of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) is their incomplete self-sufficiency, which makes continuous operations infeasible without human oversights. The more oversight UAVs require, the less likely they are going to be commercially advantageous when compared to their alternatives. As an autonomous system, how much human interaction is needed to function is one of the best indicators evaluating the limitations and inefficiencies of the UAVs. Popular UAV related research areas, such as path planning and computer vision, have enabled substanti…
