For a compact, irreducible, $\partial$-irreducible, an-annular bounded 3-manifold $M\ne\mathbb{B}^3$, then any triangulation $\mathcal{T}$ of $M$ can be modified to an ideal triangulation $\mathcal{T}^*$ of $\stackrel{\circ}{M}$. We use the inverse relationship of crushing a triangulation along a normal surface and that of inflating an ideal triangulation to introduce and study boundary-efficient triangulations and end-efficient ideal triangulations. We prove that the topological conditions necessary for a compact 3-manifold $M$ admitting an annular-efficient triangulation are sufficient to modify any triangulation of $M$ to a boundary-efficient triangulation which is also annular-efficient. From the proof we have for any ideal triangulation $T^*$ and any inflation $\mathcal{T}_Λ$, there is a bijective correspondence between the closed normal surfaces in $\mathcal{T}^*$ and the closed normal surfaces in $\mathcal{T}_Λ$ with corresponding normal surfaces being homeomorphic. It follows that for an ideal triangulation $\mathcal{T}^*$ that is $0$-efficient, $1$-efficient, or end-efficient, then any inflation $\mathcal{T}_Λ$ of $\mathcal{T}^*$ is $0$-efficient, $1$-efficient, or $\partial$-efficient, respectively. There are algorithms to decide if a given triangulation or ideal triangulation of a $3$-manifold is one of these efficient triangulations. Finally, it is shown that for an annular-efficient triangulation, there are only a finite number of boundary slopes for normal surfaces of a bounded Euler characteristic; hence, in a compact, orientable, irreducible, $\partial$-irreducible, and an-annular $3$-manifold, there are only finitely many boundary slopes for incompressible and $\partial$-incompressible surfaces of a bounded Euler characteristic.
One measure of the complexity of a 3-manifold is its triangulation complexity: the minimal number of tetrahedra in a triangulation of it. A natural question is whether we can relate this quantity to its topology. We determine the triangulation complexity of Seifert fibered spaces with non-empty boundary in terms of their Seifert data, up to a multiplicative constant. We also show that all singular fibres of such a Seifert fibered space (aside from those of multiplicity two) can be made simplicial in the 79th barycentric subdivision of any triangulation of it.
A triangulation of a compact 3-manifold is annular-efficient if it is 0-efficient and the only normal, incompressible annuli are thin edge-linking. If a compact 3-manifold has an annular-efficient triangulation, then it is irreducible, boundary-irreducible, and an-annular. Conversely, it is shown that for a compact, irreducible, boundary-irreducible, and an-annular 3-manifold, any triangulation can be modified to an annular-efficient triangulation. It follows that for a manifold satisfying this hypothesis, there are only a finite number of boundary slopes for incompressible and boundary-incomp…
It is shown that given any link-manifold, there is an algorithm to decide if the manifold contains an embedded, essential planar surface; if it does, the algorithm will construct one. If a slope on the boundary of the link-manifold is given, there is an algorithm to determine if the slope bounds an embedded punctured-disk; if a meridian slope is given, then it can be determined if a longitude bounds an embedded punctured-disk. The methods use normal surface theory but do not follow the classical approach. Properties of minimal vertex triangulations, layered-triangulations, 0--efficient triangu…
0-efficient triangulations of 3-manifolds are defined and studied. It is shown that any triangulation of a closed, orientable, irreducible 3-manifold M can be modified to a 0-efficient triangulation or M can be shown to be one of the manifolds S^3, RP^3 or L(3,1). Similarly, any triangulation of a compact, orientable, irreducible, boundary-irreducible 3-manifold can be modified to a 0-efficient triangulation. The notion of a 0-efficient ideal triangulation is defined. It is shown if M is a compact, orientable, irreducible, boundary-irreducible 3-manifold having no essential annuli and distinct…
It is known that an ideal triangulation of a compact $3$-manifold with nonempty boundary is minimal if and only if it contains the minimum number of edges among all ideal triangulations of the manifold. Therefore, any ideal one-edge triangulation (i.e., an ideal singular triangulation with exactly one edge) is minimal. Vesnin, Turaev, and the first author showed that an ideal two-edge triangulation is minimal if no $3$-$2$ Pachner move can be applied. In this paper we show that any of the so-called poor ideal three-edge triangulations is minimal. We exploit this property to construct minimal i…
In this paper, we will compute the dimension of the space of spun and ordinary normal surfaces in an ideal triangulation of the interior of a compact 3-manifold with incompressible tori or Klein bottle components. Spun normal surfaces have been described in unpublished work of Thurston. We also define a boundary map from spun normal surface theory to the homology classes of boundary loops of the 3-manifold and prove the boundary map has image of finite index. Spun normal surfaces give a natural way of representing properly embedded and immersed essential surfaces in a 3-manifold with tori and …
We extend to the context of hyperbolic 3-manifolds with geodesic boundary Thurston's approach to hyperbolization by means of geometric triangulations. In particular, we introduce moduli for (partially) truncated hyperbolic tetrahedra, and we discuss consistency and completeness equations. Moreover, building on previous work of Ushijima, we extend Weeks' tilt formula algorithm, which computes the Epstein-Penner canonical triangulation, to an algorithm that computes the Kojima triangulation. The theory is particularly interesting in the case of complete finite-volume manifolds with geodesic boun…
Starting with an ideal triangulation of the interior of a compact 3-manifold M with boundary, no component of which is a 2-sphere, we provide a construction, called an inflation of the ideal triangulation, to obtain a strongly related triangulations of M itself. Besides a step-by-step algorithm for such a construction, we provide examples of an inflation of the two-tetrahedra ideal triangulation of the complement of the figure-eight knot in the 3-sphere, giving a minimal triangulation, having ten tetrahedra, of the figure-eight knot exterior. As another example, we provide an inflation of the …
The so-called Mom-structures on hyperbolic cusped 3-manifolds without boundary were introduced by Gabai, Meyerhoff, and Milley, and used by them to identify the smallest closed hyperbolic manifold. In this work we extend the notion of a Mom-structure to include the case of 3-manifolds with non-empty boundary that does not have spherical components. We then describe a certain relation between such generalized Mom-structures, called protoMom-structures, internal on a fixed 3-manifold N, and ideal triangulations of N; in addition, in the case of non-closed hyperbolic manifolds without annular cus…
The Ptolemy variety for SL(2,C) is an invariant of a topological ideal triangulation of a compact 3-manifold M. It is closely related to Thurston's gluing equation variety. The Ptolemy variety maps naturally to the set of conjugacy classes of boundary-unipotent SL(2,C)-representations, but (like the gluing equation variety) it depends on the triangulation, and may miss several components of representations. In this paper, we define a Ptolemy variety, which is independent of the choice of triangulation, and detects all boundary-unipotent irreducible SL(2,C)-representations. We also define varia…
We establish a bijective correspondence between the set T(n) of 3-dimensional triangulations with n tetrahedra and a certain class H(n) of relative handlebodies (i.e. handlebodies with boundary loops, as defined by Johannson) of genus n+1. We show that the manifolds in H(n) are hyperbolic (with geodesic boundary, and cusps corresponding to the loops), have least possible volume, and simplest boundary loops. Mirroring the elements of H(n) in their geodesic boundary we obtain a class D(n) of cusped hyperbolic manifolds, previously considered by D. Thurston and the first named author. We show tha…
It is shown that every non-compact hyperbolic manifold of finite volume has a finite cover admitting a geodesic ideal triangulation. Also, every hyperbolic manifold of finite volume with non-empty, totally geodesic boundary has a finite regular cover which has a geodesic partially truncated triangulation. The proofs use an extension of a result due to Long and Niblo concerning the separability of peripheral subgroups.
Matveev and Piergallini independently showed that, with a small number of known exceptions, any triangulation of a three-manifold can be transformed into any other triangulation of the same three-manifold with the same number of vertices, via a sequence of 2-3 and 3-2 moves. We can interpret this as showing that the Pachner graph of such triangulations is connected. In this paper, we extend this result to show that (again with a small number of known exceptions), the subgraph of the Pachner graph consisting of triangulations without degree one edges is also connected, for single-vertex triangu…
Let r_m and r_M be the least and greatest finite boundary slopes of a hyperbolic knot K in S^3. We show that any cyclic surgery slopes of K must lie in the interval (r_m - 1/2, r_M + 1/2).
We show that for certain hyperbolic 3-manifolds, all boundary slopes are slopes of immersed incompressible surfaces, covered by incompressible embeddings in some finite cover. The manifolds include hyperbolic punctured torus bundles and hyperbolic two-bridge knots.
We investigate the question of when distinct branched surfaces in the complement of a 2-bridge knot support essential surfaces with identical boundary slopes. We determine all instances in which this occurs and identify an infinite family of knots for which no boundary slopes are repeated.
In this paper, two lower bounds on the diameters of the boundary slope sets are given for Montesinos knots. One is described in terms of the minimal crossing numbers of the knots, and the other is related to the Euler characteristics of essential surfaces with the maximal/minimal boundary slopes.
We give (1) an upper bound on the denominators of numerical boundary slopes and (2) an upper bound on the differences between two numerical boundary slopes, for Montesinos knot exteriors.
We show for an alternating knot the minimal boundary slope of an essential spanning surface is given by the signature plus twice the minimum degree of the Jones polynomial and the maximal boundary slope of an essential spanning surface is given by the signature plus twice the maximum degree of the Jones polynomial. For alternating Montesinos knots, these are the minimal and maximal boundary slopes.
It is shown that there exist alternating non-Montesinos knots whose essential spanning surfaces with maximal and minimal boundary slopes are not realised by the checkerboard surfaces coming from a reduced alternating planar diagram.
It has been an open question whether all boundary slopes of hyperbolic knots are strongly detected by the character variety. The main result of this paper produces an infinite family of hyperbolic knots each of which has at least one strict boundary slope that is not strongly detected by the character variety.
Let X be a norm curve in the SL(2,C)-character variety of a knot exterior M. Let t = || b || / || a || be the ratio of the Culler-Shalen norms of two distinct non-zero classes a, b in H_1(\partial M, Z). We demonstrate that either X has exactly two associated strict boundary slopes \pm t, or else there are strict boundary slopes r_1 and r_2 with |r_1| > t and |r_2| < t. As a consequence, we show that there are strict boundary slopes near cyclic, finite, and Seifert slopes. We also prove that the diameter of the set of strict boundary slopes can be bounded below using the Culler-Shalen norm of …
We show that, for any positive real number, there exists a knot in the 3-sphere admitting a pair of boundary slopes whose difference is at most the given number.
This paper presents some finiteness results for the number of boundary slopes of immersed essential surfaces of given genus g in a compact 3-manifold with torus boundary. In the case of hyperbolic 3-manifolds we obtain uniform quadratic bounds in g for the number of possible slopes, independent of the 3-manifold. We also look at some related quantities, such as how many times the slopes of two such surfaces of specified genus can intersect.
We find a sufficient condition for a nerve of a hyperbolic right-angled Coxeter group, under which the boundary of the group is homeomorphic to the Menger curve. We show that this condition is satisfied by many triangulations of surfaces with boundary and other 2-complexes, as well as by some triangulations of disks $D^n$ for arbitrary $n\geq3$.
The 3D index of Dimofte-Gaiotto-Gukov a partially defined function on the set of ideal triangulations of 3-manifolds with $r$ torii boundary components. For a fixed $2r$ tuple of integers, the index takes values in the set of $q$-series with integer coefficients. Our goal is to give an axiomatic definition of the tetrahedron index, and a proof that the domain of the 3D index consists precisely of the set of ideal triangulations that support an index structure. The latter is a generalization of a strict angle structure. We also prove that the 3D index is invariant under 3-2 moves, but not in ge…
We show that a finite numerical boundary slope of an essential surface in the exterior of a Montesinos knot is bounded above and below in terms of the numbers of positive/negative crossings of a specific minimal diagram of the knot.
For any hyperbolic 3-manifold $M$ with totally geodesic boundary, there are finitely many boundary slopes for essential immersed surfaces of a given genus. There is a uniform bound for the number of such boundary slopes if the genus of $\partial M$ or the volume of $M$ is bounded above. When the volume is bounded above, then area of $\partial M$ is bounded above and the length of closed geodesic on $\partial M$ is bounded below.
In this paper we prove that any triangulation of a 2-dimensional sphere with a strict 4-coloring on its vertices can seen as the boundary of a triangulation of a 3-dimensional disk with the same vertices and preserving the 4-coloring.
We show that every nonzero integer occurs in the denominator of a boundary slope for infinitely many (1,1)-knots and that infinitely many (1,1)-knots have boundary slopes of arbitrarily small difference. Specifically, we prove that for any integers m, n > 1 with n odd the exterior of the Montesinos knot K(-1/2, m/(2m \pm 1), 1/n) in S^3 contains an essential surface with boundary slope r = 2(n-1)^2/n if m is even and 2(n+1)^2/n if m is odd. If n > 4m, we prove that K(-1/2, m/(2m+1), 1/n) also has a boundary slope whose difference with r is (8m-2)/(n^2-4mn+n), which decreases to 0 as n increase…
Let $M$ be an orientable 3-manifold with $\partial M$ a single torus. We show that the number of boundary slopes of immersed essential surfaces with genus at most $g$ is bounded by a quadratic function of $g$. In the hyperbolic case, this was proved earlier by Hass, Rubinstein and Wang.
Let K be a tame knot with irreducible exterior M(K) in a closed, connected, orientable 3--manifold Sigma such that pi_1(Sigma) is cyclic. If infinity is not a strict boundary slope, then the diameter of the set of strict boundary slopes of K, denoted d_K, is a numerical invariant of K. We show that either (i) d_K >= 2 or (ii) K is a generalized iterated torus knot. The proof combines results from Culler and Shalen [Comment. Math. Helv. 74 (1999) 530-547] with a result about the effect of cabling on boundary slopes.
An ideal triangulation of a singular flat surface is a geodesic triangulation such that its vertex set is equal to the set of singular points of the surface. Using the fact that each pair of points in a surface has a finite number of geodesics having length $\leq L$ connecting them, where $L$ is any positive number, we prove that each singular flat surface has an ideal triangulation provided that the surface has singular points when it has no boundary components, or each of its boundary components has a singular point. Also, we prove that such a surface contains a finite number of geodesics wh…
Following Matveev, a k-normal surface in a triangulated 3-manifold is a generalization of both normal and (octagonal) almost normal surfaces. Using spines, complexity, and Turaev-Viro invariants of 3-manifolds, we prove the following results: 1) a minimal triangulation of a closed irreducible or a bounded hyperbolic 3-manifold contains no non-trivial k-normal sphere; 2) every triangulation of a closed manifold with at least 2 tetrahedra contains some non-trivial normal surface; 3) every manifold with boundary has only finitely many triangulations without non-trivial normal surfaces. Here, tria…
We prove that for 2-bridge knots, the diameter, D, of the set of boundary slopes is twice the crossing number, c. This constitutes partial verification of a conjecture that, for all knots in S^3, D is at most 2c.
This paper illustrates a computational approach to Culler-Morgan-Shalen theory using ideal triangulations, spun-normal surfaces and tropical geometry. Certain affine algebraic sets associated to the Whitehead link complement as well as their logarithmic limit sets are computed. The projective solution space of spun-normal surface theory is related to the space of incompressible surfaces and to the unit ball of the Thurston norm. It is shown that all boundary curves of the Whitehead link complement are strongly detected by its character variety. The specific results obtained can be used to stud…
We show that colored Khovanov homology detects classes of essential surfaces as a direct analogue of the slope conjectures for the colored Jones polynomial. We do this by identifying certain generators of the colored Khovanov chain complex with normal surfaces in the complement of the knot using an ideal triangulation from a diagram.
We consider the question of how many essential Seifert Klein bottles with common boundary slope a knot in S^3 can bound, up to ambient isotopy. We prove that any hyperbolic knot in S^3 bounds at most six Seifert Klein bottles with a given boundary slope. The Seifert Klein bottles in a minimal projection of hyperbolic pretzel knots of length 3 are shown to be unique and pi_1-injective, with surgery along their boundary slope producing irreducible toroidal manifolds. The cable knots which bound essential Seifert Klein bottles are classified; their Seifert Klein bottles are shown to be non-pi_1-i…
Let M be a complete finite-volume hyperbolic 3-manifold with compact non-empty geodesic boundary and k toric cusps, and let T be a geometric partially truncated triangulation of M. We show that the variety of solutions of consistency equations for T is a smooth manifold or real dimension 2k near the point representing the unique complete structure on M. As a consequence, the relation between deformations of triangulations and deformations of representations is completely understood, at least in a neighbourhood of the complete structure. This allows us to prove, for example, that small deformat…
Given an ideal triangulation of a connected 3-manifold with non-empty boundary consisting of a disjoint union of tori, a point of the deformation variety is an assignment of complex numbers to the dihedral angles of the tetrahedra subject to Thurston's gluing equations. From this, one can recover a representation of the fundamental group of the manifold into the isometries of 3-dimensional hyperbolic space. However, the deformation variety depends crucially on the triangulation: there may be entire components of the representation variety which can be obtained from the deformation variety with…
Using the Hatcher-Oertel algorithm for finding boundary slopes of Montesinos knots, we prove the Slope Conjecture and the Strong Slope Conjecture for a family of 3-tangle pretzel knots. More precisely, we prove that the maximal degrees of the colored Jones polynomial of such knots determine a boundary slope as predicted by the Slope Conjecture, and that the linear term in the degrees correspond to the Euler characteristic of an essential surface.
Let M be a compact, connected, orientable, irreducible 3-manifold and T an incompressible torus boundary component of M such that the pair (M,T) is not cabled. In the paper "Toroidal and Klein bottle boundary slopes" [arXiv:math/0601034] by the author it was established that for any K-incompressible tori F,F' in (M,T) which intersect in graphs G in F and G' in F', the maximal number of mutually parallel, consecutive, negative edges that may appear in G is n'+1, where n' is the number of boundary components of F'. In this paper we show that the correct such bound is n'+2, give a partial classif…
In this article we study a partial ordering on knots in the 3-sphere where K_1 is greater than or equal to K_2 if there is an epimorphism from the knot group of K_1 onto the knot group of K_2 which preserves peripheral structure. If K_1 is a 2-bridge knot and K_1 > K_2, then it is known that K_2 must also be 2-bridge. Furthermore, Ohtsuki, Riley, and Sakuma give a construction which, for a given 2-bridge knot K_{p/q}, produces infinitely 2-bridge knots K_{p'/q'} with K_{p'/q'}>K_{p/q}. After characterizing all 2-bridge knots with 4 or less distinct boundary slopes, we use this to prove that in…
Let M be a compact, connected, orientable, irreducible 3-manifold and T' an incompressible torus boundary component of M such that the pair (M,T') is not cabled. By a result of C. Gordon, if S and T are incompressible punctured tori in M with boundary on T' and boundary slopes at distance d, then d is at most 8, and the cases where d=6,7,8 are very few and classified. We give a simplified proof of this result (or rather, of its reduction process), based on an improved estimate for the maximum possible number of mutually parallel negative edges in the graphs of intersection of S and T. We also …
We describe an algorithm for computing boundary slopes of 2-bridge links. As an example, we work out the slopes of the links obtained by 1/k surgery on one component of the Borromean rings. A table of all boundary slopes of all 2-bridge links with 10 or less crossings is also included.
Garoufalidis conjectured a relation between the boundary slopes of a knot and its colored Jones polynomials. According to the conjecture, certain boundary slopes are detected by the sequence of degrees of the colored Jones polynomials. We verify this conjecture for adequate knots, a class that vastly generalizes that of alternating knots.
A diagonal surface in a link exterior M is a properly embedded, incompressible, boundary incompressible surface which furthermore has the same number of boundary components and same slope on each component of the boundary of M. We derive a formula for the boundary slope of a diagonal surface in the exterior of a 2-bridge link which is analogous to the formula for the boundary slope of a 2-bridge knot found by Hatcher and Thurston. Using this formula we show that the diameter of a 2-bridge link, that is, the difference between the smallest and largest finite slopes of diagonal surfaces, is equa…
