0-efficient triangulations of 3-manifolds are defined and studied. It is shown that any triangulation of a closed, orientable, irreducible 3-manifold M can be modified to a 0-efficient triangulation or M can be shown to be one of the manifolds S^3, RP^3 or L(3,1). Similarly, any triangulation of a compact, orientable, irreducible, boundary-irreducible 3-manifold can be modified to a 0-efficient triangulation. The notion of a 0-efficient ideal triangulation is defined. It is shown if M is a compact, orientable, irreducible, boundary-irreducible 3-manifold having no essential annuli and distinct from the 3-cell, then the interior of M admits an ideal triangulation; furthermore, it is shown that any ideal triangulation of such a 3-manifold can be modified to a 0-efficient ideal triangulation. A 0-efficient triangulation of a closed manifold has only one vertex or the manifold is S^3 and the triangulation has precisely two vertices. 0-efficient triangulations of 3-manifolds with boundary, and distinct from the 3-cell, have all their vertices in the boundary and then just one vertex in each boundary component. As tools, we introduce the concepts of barrier surface and shrinking, as well as the notion of crushing a triangulation along a normal surface. A number of applications are given, including an algorithm to construct an irreducible decomposition of a closed, orientable 3-manifold, an algorithm to construct a maximal collection of pairwise disjoint, normal 2-spheres in a closed 3-manifold, an alternate algorithm for the 3-sphere recognition problem, results on edges of low valence in minimal triangulations of 3-manifolds, and a construction of irreducible knots in closed 3-manifolds.
A census is presented of all closed non-orientable 3-manifold triangulations formed from at most seven tetrahedra satisfying the additional constraints of minimality and P^2-irreducibility. The eight different 3-manifolds represented by these 41 different triangulations are identified and described in detail, with particular attention paid to the recurring combinatorial structures that are shared amongst the different triangulations. Using these recurring structures, the resulting triangulations are generalised to infinite families that allow similar triangulations of additional 3-manifolds to…
In this paper, we describe geometrical constructions to obtain triangulations of connected sums of closed orientable triangulated 3-manifolds. Using these constructions, we show that it takes time polynomial in the number of tetrahedra to check if a closed orientable 3-manifold, equipped with a minimal triangulation, is reducible or not. This result can easily be generalized to compact orientable 3-manifolds with non-empty boundary.
In this thesis, we use normal surface theory to understand certain properties of minimal triangulations of compact orientable 3-manifolds. We describe the collapsing process of normal 2-spheres and disks. Using some geometrical constructions to take connected sums of triangulated 3-manifolds, we obtain the following result: given a minimal triangulation of a closed orientable 3-manifold M, it takes polynomial time in the number of tetrahedra to check if M is reducible or not.
Gay and Kirby recently introduced the concept of a trisection for arbitrary smooth, oriented closed 4-manifolds, and with it a new topological invariant, called the trisection genus. This paper improves and implements an algorithm due to Bell, Hass, Rubinstein and Tillmann to compute trisections using triangulations, and extends it to non-orientable 4-manifolds. Lower bounds on trisection genus are given in terms of Betti numbers and used to determine the trisection genus of all standard simply connected PL 4-manifolds. In addition, we construct trisections of small genus directly from the sim…
A family of one-vertex triangulations of 3-manifolds, layered-triangulations, is defined. Layered-triangulations are first described for handlebodies and then extended to all 3-manifolds via Heegaard splittings. A complete and detailed analysis of layered-triangulations is given in the cases of the solid torus and lens spaces, including the classification of all normal and almost normal surfaces in these triangulations. Minimal layered-triangulations of lens spaces provide a common setting for new proofs of the classification of lens spaces admitting an embedded non orientable surface and the …
With the $[0,1,2]$-family of cyclic triangulations we introduce a rich class of vertex-transitive triangulations of surfaces. In particular, there are infinite series of cyclic $q$-equivelar triangulations of orientable and non-orientable surfaces for every $q=3k$, $k\geq 2$, and every $q=3k+1$, $k\geq 3$. Series of cyclic tessellations of surfaces are derived from these triangulated series.
It is important to have effective methods for simplifying 3-manifold triangulations without losing any topological information. In theory this is difficult: we might need to make a triangulation super-exponentially more complex before we can make it smaller than its original size. Here we present experimental work that suggests the reality is far different: for an exhaustive census of 81,800,394 one-vertex triangulations that span 1,901 distinct closed orientable 3-manifolds, we never need to add more than two extra tetrahedra, we never need more than a handful of Pachner moves (or bistellar f…
We survey basic properties and bounds for $q$-equivelar and $d$-covered triangulations of closed surfaces. Included in the survey is a list of the known sources for $q$-equivelar and $d$-covered triangulations. We identify all orientable and non-orientable surfaces $M$ of Euler characteristic $0>χ(M)\geq -230$ which admit non-neighborly $q$-equivelar triangulations with equality in the upper bound $q\leq\Bigl\lfloor\tfrac{1}{2}(5+\sqrt{49-24χ(M)})\Bigl\rfloor$. These examples give rise to $d$-covered triangulations with equality in the upper bound $d\leq2\Bigl\lfloor\tfrac{1}{2}(5+\sqrt{49-24χ…
We present and apply a method for disproving the existence of polyhedral immersions in $\mathbb{R}^3$ of certain triangulations on non-orientable surfaces. In particular, it is proved that neither of the two vertex-minimal, neighborly 9-vertex triangulations of the non-orientable surface of genus 5 are realizable as immersed polyhedral surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$.
Let N be a topologically finite, orientable 3-manifold with ideal triangulation. We show that if there is a solution to the hyperbolic gluing equations, then all edges in the triangulation are essential. This result is extended to a generalisation of the hyperbolic gluing equations, which enables the construction of hyperbolic cone-manifold structures on N with singular locus contained in the 1-skeleton of the triangulation.
We study trisections of smooth, compact non-orientable 4-manifolds, and introduce trisections of non-orientable 4-manifolds with boundary. In particular, we prove a non-orientable analogue of a classical theorem of Laudenbach-Poénaru. As a consequence, trisection diagrams and Kirby diagrams of closed non-orientable 4-manifolds exist. We discuss how the theory of trisections may be adapted to the setting of non-orientable 4-manifolds with many examples.
This paper adresses the following problem: Given a closed orientable three-manifold M, are there at most finitely many closed orientable three-manifolds 1-dominated by M? We solve this question for the class of closed orientable graph manifolds. More presisely the main result of this paper asserts that any closed orientable graph manifold 1-dominates at most finitely many orientable closed three-manifolds satisfying the Poincare-Thurston Geometrization Conjecture. To prove this result we state a more general theorem for Haken manifolds which says that any closed orientable three-manifold M 1-d…
A connected combinatorial 2-manifold is called degree-regular if each of its vertices have the same degree. A connected combinatorial 2-manifold is called weakly regular if it has a vertex-transitive automorphism group. Clearly, a weakly regular combinatorial 2-manifold is degree-regular and a degree-regular combinatorial 2-manifold of Euler characteristic - 2 must contain 12 vertices. In 1982, McMullen et al. constructed a 12-vertex geometrically realized triangulation of the double-torus in $\RR^3$. As an abstract simplicial complex, this triangulation is a weakly regular combinatorial 2-man…
We present the census of all non-orientable, closed, connected 3-manifolds admitting a rigid crystallization with at most 30 vertices. In order to obtain the above result, we generate, manipulate and compare, by suitable computer procedures, all rigid non-bipartite crystallizations up to 30 vertices.
The construction of integer linking numbers of closed curves in a three-dimensional manifold usually appeals to the orientation of this manifold. We discuss how to avoid it constructing similar homotopy invariants of links in non-orientable manifolds.
We determine the minimum number of vertices needed to provide balanced triangulations of $\mathbb S^{d-2}$-bundles over $\mathbb S^1$. If $d$ is odd and the bundle is orientable, or $d$ is even and the bundle is non-orientable, the minimum number of vertices is $3d$; otherwise, it is $3d+2$. Similar results apply to all balanced simplicial complexes that triangulate homology manifolds with $β_1\neq 0$ and $β_2=0$, where $β_i$'s are the Betti numbers, computed with coefficients in $\mathbb Q$.
We describe an example of a closed orientable 3-manifold with distinct distance three genus two Heegaard splittings. This demonstrates that the constructions of alternate genus two Heegaard splittings of closed orientable 3-manifolds described by Rubinstein and Scharlemann in their 1998 paper Genus Two Heegaard Splittings of Orientable 3-Manifolds, does not yield all alternate genus two splittings and must be augmented.
Some properties of non-orientable 3-manifolds are shown. The semi-group of cobordism of immersions of surfaces in such manifolds is computed and proven actually to be a group. Explicit invariants are provided.
We give an upper bound for the Matveev complexity of the whole class of closed connected orientable prime graph manifolds that is sharp for all 14502 graph manifolds of the Recognizer catalogue (available at \texttt{http://matlas.math.csu.ru/?page=search}).
We use Heath's, Moriah's and Schultens's results to prove that irreducible Heegaard splittings of orientable Seifert manifolds with nonorientable base space are either vertical or horizontal.
A triangulated $d$-manifold $K$, satisfies the inequality $\binom{f_0(K)-d-1}{2}\geq \binom{d+2}{2}β_1(K;\mathbb{Z}_2)$ for $d\geq 3$. The triangulated $d$-manifolds that meet the bound with equality are called {\em tight neighborly}. In this paper, we present tight neighborly triangulations of 4-manifolds on 15 vertices with $\mathbb{Z}_3$ as automorphism group. One such example wasconstructed by Bagchi and Datta in 2011. We show that there are exactly 12 such triangulations up to isomorphism, 10 of which are orientable.
After a short summary of known results on surface-complexity of closed 3-manifolds, we will classify all closed orientable 3-manifolds with surface-complexity one.
The triangulation complexity of a compact 3-manifold is the minimal number of tetrahedra in any triangulation of the 3-manifold. We compute the triangulation complexity of all elliptic 3-manifolds and all sol 3-manifolds, to within a universally bounded multiplicative error.
The crushing operation of Jaco and Rubinstein is a powerful technique in algorithmic 3-manifold topology: it enabled the first practical implementations of 3-sphere recognition and prime decomposition of orientable manifolds, and it plays a prominent role in state-of-the-art algorithms for unknot recognition and testing for essential surfaces. Although the crushing operation will always reduce the size of a triangulation, it might alter its topology, and so it requires a careful theoretical analysis for the settings in which it is used. The aim of this short paper is to make the crushing opera…
This paper extends the results from the author's previous paper to consider finite, fiber- and orientation- preserving group actions on closed, orientable Seifert manifolds $M$ that fiber over a non-orientable base space. An orientable base space double cover $\tilde{M}$ of $M$ is constructed and then an isomorphism between the fiber- and orientation-preserving diffeomorphisms of ${M}$ and the fiber- and orientation-preserving actions on $\tilde{M}$ that preserve the orientation on the fibers and commute with the covering translation is shown. This result and previous results lead to a constru…
Quasitoric manifolds, introduced by M. Davis and T. Januskiewicz in 1991, are topological generalizations of smooth complex projective spaces. In 1992, Banchoff and Kühnel constructed a 10-vertex equilibrium triangulations of $\CP^2$. We generalize this construction for quasitoric manifolds and construct some equilibrium triangulations of $4$-dimensional quasitoric manifolds. In some cases, our constructions give vertex minimal equilibrium triangulations.
We classify all closed non-orientable P2-irreducible 3-manifolds having complexity up to 6 and we describe some having complexity 7. We show in particular that there is no such manifold with complexity less than 6, and that those having complexity 6 are precisely the 4 flat non-orientable ones and the filling of the Gieseking manifold, which is of type Sol. The manifolds having complexity 7 we describe are Seifert manifolds of type H2 x S1 and a manifold of type Sol.
We classify all closed non-orientable P2-irreducible 3-manifolds with complexity up to 7, fixing two mistakes in our previous complexity-up-to-6 classification. We show that there is no such manifold with complexity less than 6, five with complexity 6 (the four flat ones and the filling of the Gieseking manifold, which is of type Sol, and three with complexity 7 (one manifold of type Sol, and the two manifolds of type H2xR with smallest base orbifolds).
In this paper we consider the finite groups that act fiber- and orientation-preservingly on closed, compact, and orientable Seifert manifolds that fiber over an orientable base space. We establish a method of constructing such group actions and then show that if an action satisfies a condition on the obstruction class of the Seifert manifold, it can be derived from the given construction. The obstruction condition is refined and the general structure of the finite groups that act via the construction is provided.
We define essential and strongly essential triangulations of 3-manifolds, and give four constructions using different tools (Heegaard splittings, hierarchies of Haken 3-manifolds, Epstein-Penner decompositions, and cut loci of Riemannian manifolds) to obtain triangulations with these properties under various hypotheses on the topology or geometry of the manifold. We also show that a semi-angle structure is a sufficient condition for a triangulation of a 3-manifold to be essential, and a strict angle structure is a sufficient condition for a triangulation to be strongly essential. Moreover, alg…
We find conditions under which a non-orientable closed surface S embedded into an orientable closed 4-manifold X can be represented by a connected sum of an embedded closed surface in X and an unknotted projective plane in a 4-sphere. This allows us to extend the Gabai 4-dimensional light bulb theorem and the Auckly-Kim-Melvin-Ruberman-Schwartz "one is enough" theorem to the case of non-orientable surfaces.
The present paper follows the computational approach to 3-manifold classification via edge-coloured graphs, already performed by several authors with respect to orientable 3-manifolds up to 28 coloured tetrahedra, non-orientable 3-manifolds up to 26 coloured tetrahedra, genus two 3-manifolds up to 34 coloured tetrahedra: in fact, by automatic generation and analysis of suitable edge-coloured graphs, called crystallizations, we obtain a catalogue of all orientable 3-manifolds admitting coloured triangulations with 30 tetrahedra. These manifolds are unambiguously identified via JSJ decomposition…
We describe a general method to compute the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-Thurston norm for every $\mathbb{Z}_2$-homology class in an orientable Seifert manifold with orientable orbit surface. Our main tools are pseudo-horizontal surfaces. We give a necessary and sufficient criterion for the existence of pseudo-horizontal surfaces, calculate the non-orientable genera for such surfaces, and detect their $\mathbb{Z}_2$-homology classes. We then describe an algorithm to calculate the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-Thurston norm of each $\mathbb{Z}_2$-homology classes. We also present several interesting examples.
We give an explicit construction of vertex-transitive tight triangulations of $d$-manifolds for $d\geq 2$. More explicitly, for each $d\geq 2$, we construct two $(d^2+5d+5)$-vertex neighborly triangulated $d$-manifolds whose vertex-links are stacked spheres. The only other non-trivial series of such tight triangulated manifolds currently known is the series of non-simply connected triangulated $d$-manifolds with $2d+3$ vertices constructed by Kühnel. The manifolds we construct are strongly minimal. For $d\geq 3$, they are also tight neighborly as defined by Lutz, Sulanke and Swartz. Like Kühne…
In this paper, it is shown that every orientable closed 3-manifold maps with nonzero degree onto at most finitely many homeomorphically distinct irreducible non-geometric orientable closed 3-manifolds. Moreover, given any nonzero integer, as a mapping degree up to sign, every orientable closed 3-manifold maps with that degree onto only finitely many homeomorphically distinct orientable closed 3-manifolds.
It is not completely unreasonable to expect that a computable function bounding the number of Pachner moves needed to change any triangulation of a given 3-manifold into any other triangulation of the same 3-manifold exists. In this paper we describe a procedure yielding an explicit formula for such a function if the 3-manifold in question is a Seifert fibred space.
We generalise work of Young-Eun Choi to the setting of ideal triangulations with vertex links of arbitrary genus, showing that the set of all (possibly incomplete) hyperbolic cone-manifold structures realised by positively oriented hyperbolic ideal tetrahedra on a given topological ideal triangulation and with prescribed cone angles at all edges is (if non-empty) a smooth complex manifold of dimension the sum of the genera of the vertex links. Moreover, we show that the complex lengths of a collection of peripheral elements give a local holomorphic parameterisation of this manifold.
We give a concrete example of an infinite sequence of $(p_n, q_n)$-lens spaces $L(p_n, q_n)$ with natural triangulations $T(p_n, q_n)$ with $p_n$ taterahedra such that $L(p_n, q_n)$ contains a certain non-orientable closed surface which is fundamental with respect to $T(p_n, q_n)$ and of minimal crosscap number among all closed non-orientable surfaces in $L(p_n, q_n)$ and has $n-2$ parallel sheets of normal disks of a quadrilateral type disjoint from the pair of core circles of $L(p_n, q_n)$. Actually, we can set $p_0=0, q_0=1, p_{k+1}=3p_k+2q_k$ and $q_{k+1}=p_k+q_k$.
A triangulation of a compact 3-manifold is annular-efficient if it is 0-efficient and the only normal, incompressible annuli are thin edge-linking. If a compact 3-manifold has an annular-efficient triangulation, then it is irreducible, boundary-irreducible, and an-annular. Conversely, it is shown that for a compact, irreducible, boundary-irreducible, and an-annular 3-manifold, any triangulation can be modified to an annular-efficient triangulation. It follows that for a manifold satisfying this hypothesis, there are only a finite number of boundary slopes for incompressible and boundary-incomp…
We prove that the 8^4_2 link complement is the minimal volume orientable hyperbolic manifold with 4 cusps. Its volume is twice of the volume V_8 of the ideal regular octahedron, i.e. 7.32... = 2V_8. The proof relies on Agol's argument used to determine the minimal volume hyperbolic 3-manifolds with 2 cusps. We also need to estimate the volume of a hyperbolic 3-manifold with totally geodesic boundary which contains an essential surface with non-separating boundary.
Tight triangulated manifolds are generalisations of neighborly triangulations of closed surfaces and are interesting objects in Combinatorial Topology. Tight triangulated manifolds are conjectured to be minimal. Except few, all the known tight triangulated manifolds are stacked. It is known that locally stacked tight triangulated manifolds are strongly minimal. Except for three infinite series and neighborly surfaces, very few tight triangulated manifolds are known. From some recent works, we know more on tight triangulation. In this article, we present a survey on the works done on tight tria…
In this paper, we explore minimal contact triangulations on contact 3-manifolds. We give many explicit examples of contact triangulations that are close to minimal ones. The main results of this article say that on any closed oriented 3-manifold the number of vertices for minimal contact triangulations for overtwisted contact structures grows at most linearly with respect to the relative $d^3$ invariant. We conjecture that this bound is optimal. We also discuss, in great details, contact triangulations for a certain family of overtwisted contact structures on 3-torus.
For a field $\mathbb{F}$, the notion of $\mathbb{F}$-tightness of simplicial complexes was introduced by Kühnel. Kühnel and Lutz conjectured that any $\mathbb{F}$-tight triangulation of a closed manifold is the most economic of all possible triangulations of the manifold. The boundary of a triangle is the only $\mathbb{F}$-tight triangulation of a closed 1-manifold. A triangulation of a closed 2-manifold is $\mathbb{F}$-tight if and only if it is $\mathbb{F}$-orientable and neighbourly. In this paper we prove that a triangulation of a closed 3-manifold is $\mathbb{F}$-tight if and only if it i…
A filling Dehn sphere $Σ$ in a closed 3-manifold $M$ is a sphere transversely immersed in $M$ that defines a cell decomposition of $M$. Every closed 3-manifold has a filling Dehn sphere. The Montesinos complexity of a $3$-manifold $M$ is defined as the minimal number of triple points among all the filling Dehn spheres of $M$. A sharp upper bound for the Montesinos complexity of the connected sum of two 3-manifolds is given.
It is conjectured that every cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold has a decomposition into positive volume ideal hyperbolic tetrahedra (a "geometric" triangulation of the manifold). Under a mild homology assumption on the manifold we construct topological ideal triangulations which admit a strict angle structure, which is a necessary condition for the triangulation to be geometric. In particular, every knot or link complement in the 3-sphere has such a triangulation. We also give an example of a triangulation without a strict angle structure, where the obstruction is related to the homology hypothesis…
We compute the $p$-primary components of the linking pairings of orientable 3-manifolds admitting a fixed-point free $S^1$-action. Using this, we show that any non-singular linking pairing on a finite abelian group with homogeneous 2-primary summand is realized by such a manifold. However, some pairings on inhomogeneous 2-groups are not realizable by any Seifert fibred 3-manifold.
We prove that the Whitehead link complement and the (-2, 3, 8) pretzel link complement are the minimal volume orientable hyperbolic 3-manifolds with two cusps, with volume 3.66... = 4 x Catalan's constant. We use topological arguments to establish the existence of an essential surface which provides a lower bound on volume and strong constraints on the manifolds that realize that lower bound.
This paper uses results on the classification of minimal triangulations of 3-manifolds to produce additional results, using covering spaces. Using previous work on minimal triangulations of lens spaces, it is shown that the lens space $L(4k, 2k-1)$ and the generalised quaternionic space $S^3/Q_{4k}$ have complexity $k,$ where $k\ge 2.$ Moreover, it is shown that their minimal triangulations are unique.
