The present paper derives the post-Newtonian Lagrangian of translational motion of N arbitrary-structured bodies with all mass and spin multipoles in a scalar-tensor theory of gravity. The multipoles depend on time and evolve in accordance with their own dynamic equations of motion. The Lagrangian is retrieved from the post-Newtonian equations of motion by solving the inverse problem of the Lagrangian mechanics and generalizes a well-known Lagrangian of pole-dipole-quadrupole massive particles to the particles of higher multipolarity. Analytic treatment of the higher-order multipole contributions is important for more rigorous computation of gravitational waveform of inspiralling compact binaries at the latest stage of their orbital evolution before merger when tidal and rotational deformations of stars are no longer small and rapidly change in time. The Lagrangian of an N-body system with arbitrary mass and spin multipoles is instrumental for formulation of the post-Newtonian conservation laws of energy, momenta and the integrals of the center of mass.
The multipole moments are defined as the multipole expansion coefficients of the gravitational field at infinity. In Newtonian gravity, the multipole moments are determined by the source distribution -- the multipole integrals of the source. In this paper, we show that the multipole moments in general relativity cannot be determined by the multipole integrals of the source. We provide the multipole integrals in static axial spacetimes, such as, the Curzon spacetime. The Curzon spacetime possesses the same multipole integrals of the source with the Schwarzschild spacetime, while they possess di…
Using effective field theory techniques we calculate the source multipole moments needed to obtain the spin contributions to the power radiated in gravitational waves from inspiralling compact binaries to third Post-Newtonian order (3PN). The multipoles depend linearly and quadratically on the spins and include both spin(1)spin(2) and spin(1)spin(1) components. The results in this paper provide the last missing ingredient required to determine the phase evolution to 3PN including all spin effects which we will report in a separate paper.
Using the NRGR effective field theory formalism we calculate the remaining source multipole moments necessary to obtain the spin contributions to the gravitational wave amplitude to 2.5 Post-Newtonian (PN) order. We also reproduce the tail contribution to the waveform linear in spin at 2.5PN arising from the nonlinear interaction between the current quadrupole and the mass monopole.
A family of vector fields that are the infinitesimal generators of determined one-parameter groups of transformations are constructed. It is shown that these vector fields represent symmetries of the system of differential equations interrelated by the axially symmetric Laplace equation and a certain supplementary equation. Group-invariant solutions of this system of equations are obtained by means of two alternative methods, and it is proved that these solutions turn out to be the family of axisymmetric potentials related to specific gravitational multipoles. The existence of these symmetries…
Multipole moments carry a lot of information about the gravitational field. Nonetheless, knowing all the multipole moments of an object does not determine conclusively the nature of the object itself. In particular, the multipole moments of the Kerr spacetime are not unique. Here we construct several physically motivated Newtonian objects with multipole moments identical to those of Kerr. Moreover, we also provide a description of how to include post-Newtonian corrections to these objects without changing their multipole moments.
The tidal Love numbers of a black hole vanish, and this is often taken to imply that the hole's tidally induced multipole moments vanish also. An obstacle to establishing a link between these statements is that the multipole moments of individual bodies are not defined in general relativity, when the bodies are subjected to a mutual gravitational interaction. In a previous publication [Phys. Rev. D 103, 064023 (2021)] I promoted the view that individual multipole moments can be defined when the mutual interaction is sufficiently weak to be described by a post-Newtonian expansion. In this view,…
New expressions for the multipole moments of an isolated post-Newtonian source, in the form of surface integrals in the outer near-zone, are derived. As an application we compute the ``source'' quadrupole moment of a Schwarzschild solution boosted to uniform velocity, at the third post-Newtonian (3PN) order. We show that the consideration of this boosted Schwarzschild solution (BSS) is enough to uniquely determine one of the ambiguity parameters in the recent computation of the gravitational wave generation by compact binaries at 3PN order: zeta=-7/33. We argue that this value is the only one …
This paper is motivated by the need to improve the post-Newtonian (PN) amplitude accuracy of waveforms for gravitational waves generated by inspiralling compact binaries, both for use in data analysis and in the comparison between post-Newtonian approximations and numerical relativity computations. It presents: (i) the non-linear couplings between multipole moments of general post-Newtonian matter sources up to order 3.5PN, including all contributions from tails, tails-of-tails and the non-linear memory effect; and (ii) the source mass-type octupole moment of (non-spinning) compact binaries up…
We study the planar motion of test particles in gravitational fields produced by an external material halo, of the type found in many astrophysical systems, such as elliptical galaxies and globular clusters. Both the Newtonian and the general-relativistic dynamics are examined, and in the relativistic case the dynamics of both massive and massless particles are investigated. The halo field is given in general by a multipole expansion; we restrict ourselves to multipole fields of pure order, whose Newtonian potentials are homogeneous polynomials in cartesian coordinates. A pure (n)-pole field h…

We derive the equation of motion for the relativistic compact binaries in the post-Newtonian approximation taking explicitly their strong internal gravity into account. For this purpose we adopt the method of the point particle limit where the equation of motion is expressed in terms of the surface integrals. We examine carefully the behavior of the surface integrals in the derivation. As a result, we obtain the Einstein-Infeld-Hoffman equation of motion at the first post-Newtonian (1PN) order, and a part of the 2PN order which depends on the quadrupole moments and the spins of component stars…
An exact expression for the gravitational field strength in a self-gravitating dust continuum is derived within the Lagrangian picture of continuum mechanics. From the Euler-Newton system a transport equation for the gravitational field strength is formulated and then integrated along trajectories of continuum elements. The resulting integral solves one of the Lagrangian equations of the corresponding Lagrange-Newton system in general. Relations to known exact solutions without symmetry in Newtonian gravity are discussed. The presented integral may be employed to access the non-perturbative re…
We examine the tidal deformation of a nonrotating compact body (material body or black hole) in general relativity. The body's exterior metric is calculated in a simultaneous expansion in powers of the ratio between the distance to the body and three distinct length scales: the radius of curvature of the external spacetime in which the body is inserted, the scale of spatial inhomogeneity of the curvature, and the scale of temporal variation. The metric is valid in the body's immediate neighborhood, which excludes the external matter responsible for the tidal environment. The body's tidal respo…
The rotational dynamics of an $N$-body system at the first post-Newtonian order in Einstein-Cartan theory is derived. This result is achieved by performing the point-particle limit of the equations of motion of the Weyssenhoff fluid, which models the quantum spin effects residing inside the bodies. For the special case of binary systems, we determine the Lagrangian function and the resulting first integrals underlying the translational dynamics and the spin precession.
We apply an effective field theory method for the gravitational interaction of compact stars, developed within the context of general relativity, to Newtonian gravity. In this effective theory a compact object is represented by a point particle possessing generic gravitational multipole moments. The time evolution of the multipoles depends on excitations due to external fields. This can formally be described by a response function of the multipoles to applied fields. The poles of this response correspond to the normal oscillation modes of the star. This gives rise to resonances between modes a…
In order to shed some light in the meaning of the relativistic multipolar expansions we consider different static solutions of the axially symmetric vacuum Einstein equations that in the non relativistic limit have same Newtonian moments. The motion of test particles orbiting around different deformed attraction centers with the same Newtonian limit is studied paying special attention to the advance of the perihelion. We find discrepancies in the fourth order of the dimensionless parameter (mass of the attraction center)/(semilatus rectum). An evolution equation for the difference of the radia…
Regular and chaotic test particle motion in gravitational fields due to stellar bodies with quadrupolar and octupolar deformation are studied using Poincare surfaces of section. In first instance, we analyze the purely Newtonian case and we find that the octupolar term induces a distortion in the KAM curves corresponding to regular trajectories as well as an increase in chaoticity, even in the case corresponding to oblate deformation. Then we examine the effect of the first general relativistic corrections, provided by the post Newtonian approach. For typical values of the post Newtonian multi…
The leading-order spin-orbit coupling is included in a post-Newtonian Lagrangian formulation of spinning compact binaries, which consists of the Newtonian term, first post-Newtonian (1PN) and 2PN non-spin terms and 2PN spin-spin coupling. This makes a 3PN spin-spin coupling occur in the derived Hamiltonian. The spin-spin couplings are mainly responsible for chaos in the Hamiltonians. However, the 3PN spin-spin Hamiltonian is small and has different signs, compared with the 2PN spin-spin Hamiltonian equivalent to the 2PN spin-spin Lagrangian. As a result, the probability of the occurrence of ch…
We discuss the effects of the black holes' spin-multipole structure in the orbital dynamics of binary black holes according to general relativity, focusing on the leading-post-Newtonian-order couplings at each order in an expansion in the black holes' spins. We first review previous widely confirmed results up through fourth order in spin, observe suggestive patterns therein, and discuss how the results can be extrapolated to all orders in spin with minimal information from the test-body limit. We then justify this extrapolation by providing a complete derivation within the post-Newtonian fram…
We give a surface integral derivation of post-1-Newtonian translational equations of motion for a system of arbitrarily structured bodies, including the coupling to all the bodies' mass and current multipole moments. The derivation requires only that the post-1-Newtonian vacuum field equations are satisfied in weak-field regions between the bodies; the bodies' internal gravity can be arbitrarily strong. The derivation extends previous results of Damour, Soffel and Xu (DSX) for weakly self-gravitating bodies for which the post-1-Newtonian field equations are satisfied everywhere. The derivation…
We discuss various analytical approximation methods for the evolution of the density fluctuation in the Universe. From primordial density fluctuation, the large-scale structure is formed via its own self-gravitational instability. For this dynamical evolution, several approaches have been considered. In Newtonian cosmology, in which matter motion is described by Newtonian dynamics with cosmic expansion, Lagrangian description for the cosmic fluid is known to work rather well for quasi-nonlinear clustering regime. In this paper, we briefly review Lagrangian perturbation theory in Newtonian cosm…
The gravitational radiation originating from a compact binary system in circular orbit is usually expressed as an infinite sum over radiative multipole moments. In a slow-motion approximation, each multipole moment is then expressed as a post-Newtonian expansion in powers of v/c, the ratio of the orbital velocity to the speed of light. The bare multipole truncation of the radiation consists in keeping only the leading-order term in the post-Newtonian expansion of each moment, but summing over all the multipole moments. In the case of binary systems with small mass ratios, the bare multipole se…
Within the framework of the effective field theory approach to the post-Newtonian approximation to General Relativity, we report the so far missing G^3 and G^4 sectors of the conservative two body dynamics at fourth perturbative order for non-spinning compact objects. Following the standard procedure, the exchange of gravitational interaction is integrated out to obtain a systematic expansion in terms of Feynman graphs. Building on this result and on previously obtained ones, we are able to write the local-in-time regularized Lagrangian at fourth post-Newtonian order, which is in agreement wit…
The static solutions of the axially symmetric vacuum Einstein equations with a finite number of Relativistic Multipole Moments are described by means of a function that can be written in the same analytic form as the Newtonian gravitational multipole potential. A family of so-called MSA (Multipole-Symmetry Adapted) coordinates are introduced and calculated at any multipole order to perform the transformation of the Weyl solutions. In analogy with a previous result obtained in Newtonian gravity, the existence of a symmetry of a certain system of differential equations leading to the determinati…
We address issues with extant formulations of dissipative effects in the effective field theory (EFT) which describes the post-Newtonian (PN) inspiral of two gravitating bodies by (re)formulating several parts of the theory. Novel ingredients include gauge invariant spherical fields in the radiation zone; a system zone which preserves time reversal such that its violation arises not from local odd propagation but rather from interaction with the radiation sector in a way which resembles the balayage method; 2-way multipoles to perform zone matching within the EFT action; and a double-field rad…
Equations of motion for a general relativistic post-Newtonian Lagrangian approach mainly refer to acceleration equations, i.e. differential equations of velocities. They are directly from the Euler-Lagrangian equations, and usually have higher-order terms truncated when they remain at the same post-Newtonian order of the Lagrangian. In this sense, they are incoherent equations of the Lagrangian and approximately conserve constants of motion in this system. In this paper, we show that the Euler-Lagrangian equations can also yield the equations of motion for consistency of the Lagrangian in the …
We analyse an eleven-orbit inspiral of a non-spinning black-hole binary with mass ratio q=M1/M2=4. The numerically obtained gravitational waveforms are compared with post-Newtonian (PN) predictions including several sub-dominant multipoles up to multipolar indices (l=5,m=5). We find that (i) numerical and post-Newtonian predictions of the phase of the (2,2) mode accumulate a phase difference of about 0.35 rad at the PN cut off frequency 0.1 for the Taylor T1 approximant when numerical and PN waveforms are matched over a window in the early inspiral phase; (ii) in contrast to previous studies o…
The article reviews the current status of a theoretical approach to the problem of the emission of gravitational waves by isolated systems in the context of general relativity. Part A of the article deals with general post-Newtonian sources. The exterior field of the source is investigated by means of a combination of analytic post-Minkowskian and multipolar approximations. The physical observables in the far-zone of the source are described by a specific set of radiative multipole moments. By matching the exterior solution to the metric of the post-Newtonian source in the near-zone we obtain …
We present a method to study the time variation of the orbital parameters of a Post-Keplerian binary system undergoing a generic external perturbation. The method is the relativistic extension of the planetary Lagrangian equations. The theory only assumes the smallness of the external perturbation while relativistic effects are already included in the unperturbed problem. This is the major advantage of this novel approach over classical Lagrangian methods.
This paper employs the post-Newtonian approximations of scalar-tensor theory of gravity along with the Cartesian STF tensors and the Blanchet-Damour multipole formalism to derive translational and rotational equations of motion of N extended bodies with arbitrary distribution of mass and velocity. We assume that spacetime can be covered by a global coordinate chart which is Minkowskian at infinity. We also introduce N local coordinate charts adapted to each body and covering a finite domain of space around the body. Gravitational field of each body is parametrized by an infinite set of the bod…
For a test body orbiting an axisymmetric body in Newtonian gravitational theory with multipole moments Q_L, (and for a charge in a non-relativistic orbit about a charge distribution with the same multipole moments) we show that there exists, in addition to the energy and angular momentum component along the symmetry axis, a conserved quantity analogous to the Carter constant of Kerr spacetimes in general relativity, if the odd-L moments vanish, and the even-L moments satisfy Q_2L = m (Q_2/m)^L. Strangely, this is precisely the relation among mass moments enforced by the no-hair theorems of rot…
We present a new approach to factorize and resum the post-Newtonian (PN) waveform for generic equatorial motion to be used within effective-one-body (EOB) based waveform models. The new multipolar waveform factorization improves previous prescriptions in that: (i) the generic Newtonian contribution is factored out from each multipole; (ii) the circular part is factored out and resummed using standard EOB methods and (iii) the residual, 2PN-accurate, noncircular part, and in particular the tail contribution, is additionally resummed using Padé approximants. The resulting waveform is validated i…
Using the gravitational potential and source multipole moments bilinear in the spins, first computed to next-to-leading order (NLO) in the post-Newtonian (PN) expansion within the effective field theory (EFT) framework, we complete here the derivation of the dynamical invariants and flux-balance equations, including energy and angular momentum. We use these results to calculate spin-spin effects in the orbital frequency and accumulated phase to NLO for circular orbits. We also derive the linear momentum and center-of-mass fluxes and associated kick-velocity, to the highest relevant PN order. W…
The Newtonian limit of fourth-order gravity is worked out discussing its viability with respect to the standard results of General Relativity. We investigate the limit in the metric approach which, with respect to the Palatini formulation, has been much less studied in the recent literature, due to the higher-order of the field equations. In addition, we refrain from exploiting the formal equivalence of higher-order theories considering the analogy with specific scalar-tensor theories, i.e. we work in the so-called Jordan frame in order to avoid possible misleading interpretations of the resul…
This paper derives the expressions of the multipole moments of an isolated gravitating source with an accuracy corresponding to the second post-Newtonian (2-PN) approximation of general relativity. The moments are obtained by a procedure of matching of the external gravitational field of the source to the inner field, and are found to be given by integrals extending over the stress-energy distribution of the matter fields and the gravitational field. Although this is not manifest on their expressions, the moments have a compact support limited to the material source only (they are thus perfect…
The non-linear dynamics of irrotational dust in General Relativity is studied in synchronous and comoving coordinates. All the equations are written in terms of the metric tensor of spatial sections orthogonal to the flow, which allows an unambiguous expansion in powers of $1/c^2$. To lowest order, the Newtonian approximation in Lagrangian form is derived. At this level the evolution is governed by the Raychaudhuri equation for the Lagrangian-to-Eulerian Jacobian matrix. The Lagrangian spatial metric reduces to that of Euclidean 3-space in time-dependent curvilinear coordinates. A Lagrangian v…
We study the nonlinear gravitational dynamics of a universe filled with a pressureless fluid and a cosmological constant $Λ$ in the context of Newtonian gravity, and in the relativistic post-Friedmann approach proposed in paper I [I. Milillo et al., Phys. Rev. D 92, 023519 (2015).]. The post-Friedmann approximation scheme is based on the $1/c$ expansion of the space-time metric and the energy-momentum tensor, and includes nonlinear Newtonian cosmology. Here we establish the nonlinear post-Friedmann framework in the Lagrangian-coordinates approach for structure formation. For this we first iden…
The mass-type quadrupole moment of inspiralling compact binaries (without spins) is computed at the fourth post-Newtonian (4PN) approximation of general relativity. The multipole moments are defined by matching between the field in the exterior zone of the matter system and the PN field in the near zone, following the multipolar-post-Minkowskian (MPM)-PN formalism. The matching implies a specific regularization for handling infra-red (IR) divergences of the multipole moments at infinity, based on the Hadamard finite part procedure. On the other hand, the calculation entails ultra-violet (UV) d…
It was claimed recently that a low order post-Newtonian (PN) Lagrangian formulation, which corresponds to the Euler-Lagrange equations up to an infinite PN order, can be identical to a PN Hamiltonian formulation at the infinite order from a theoretical point of view. This result is difficult to check because in most cases one does not know what both the Euler-Lagrange equations and the equivalent Hamiltonian are at the infinite order. However, no difficulty exists for a special 1PN Lagrangian formulation of relativistic circular restricted three-body problem, where both the Euler-Lagrange equa…
We compute the complete post-Newtonian limit of the metric form of f(R) gravities using a scalar-tensor representation. By comparing the predictions of these theories with laboratory and solar system experiments, we find a set of inequalities that any lagrangian f(R) must satisfy. The constraints imposed by those inequalities allow us to find explicit bounds to the possible nonlinear terms of the lagrangian. We conclude that the lagrangian f(R) must be almost linear in R and that corrections that grow at low curvatures are incompatible with observations. This result shows that modifications of…
We revisit the problem of flux-balance equations for isolated post-Newtonian matter systems due to the emission of gravitational waves. In particular we show by a local derivation confined to the system, using the expression of radiation-reaction forces up to the 3.5PN order, that not only the energy, angular momentum and linear momentum of the system, but also the position of its center of mass, obey some (non-trivial) flux-balance equations. The balance equation for the center-of-mass position completes the description of the secular evolution by gravitational waves of relativistic post-Newt…
We construct a general stratified scalar theory of gravitation from a field equation that accounts for the self-interaction of the field and a particle Lagrangian, and calculate its post-Newtonian parameters. Using this general framework, we analyze several specific scalar theories of gravitation and check their predictions for the solar system post-Newtonian effects.
We compute the complete post-Newtonian limit of the Palatini form of f(R) gravities using a scalar-tensor representation. By comparing the predictions of these theories with laboratory and solar system experiments, we find a set of inequalities that any lagrangian f(R) must satisfy. The constraints imposed by those inequalities allow us to find explicit functions that bound from above and from below the possible nonlinear terms of the lagrangian. We conclude that the lagrangian f(R) must be almost linear in R and that nonlinear corrections that grow at low curvatures are incompatible with obse…
We improve and generalize a resummation method of post-Newtonian multipolar waveforms from circular compact binaries introduced in Refs. \cite{Damour:2007xr,Damour:2007yf}. One of the characteristic features of this resummation method is to replace the usual {\it additive} decomposition of the standard post-Newtonian approach by a {\it multiplicative} decomposition of the complex multipolar waveform $h_{\lm}$ into several (physically motivated) factors: (i) the "Newtonian" waveform, (ii) a relativistic correction coming from an "effective source", (iii) leading-order tail effects linked to pro…
Usually, the reduced mass $μ$ is viewed as a dropped factor in $μl$ and $μh$, where $l$ and $h$ are dimensionless Lagrangian and Hamiltonian functions. However, it must be retained in post-Newtonian systems of spinning compact binaries under a set of scaling spin transformations $\mathbf{S}_i=\mathbf{s}_iGM^{2}$ because $l$ and $h$ do not keep the consistency of the orbital equations and the spin precession equations but $(μ/M) l$ and $(μ/M) h$ do. When another set of scaling spin transformations $\mathbf{S}_i=\mathbf{s}_iGμM$ are adopted, the consistency of the orbital and spin equations is k…
The ``Newtonian'' theory of spatially unbounded, self--gravitating, pressureless continua in Lagrangian form is reconsidered. Following a review of the pertinent kinematics, we present alternative formulations of the Lagrangian evolution equations and establish conditions for the equivalence of the Lagrangian and Eulerian representations. We then distinguish open models based on Euclidean space $\R^3$ from closed models based (without loss of generality) on a flat torus $\T^3$. Using a simple averaging method we show that the spatially averaged variables of an inhomogeneous toroidal model form…
In this paper we investigate the gravitational-wave generation problem at the first post-Newtonian order in the context of Einstein-Cartan theory by exploiting the Blanchet-Damour formalism. The quantum intrinsic spin carried by slowly moving, weakly stressed, weakly self-gravitating sources is described geometrically by means of the torsion tensor. We obtain the expression of the source multipole moments with the required accuracy. The analysis of the physical meaning of the lowest-order non-radiative moments and of the asymptotic gravitational waveform is also performed. Eventually, we draw …
We derive the evolution equations for the electric and magnetic parts of the Weyl tensor for cold dust from both general relativity and Newtonian gravity. In a locally inertial frame at rest in the fluid frame, the Newtonian equations agree with those of general relativity. We give explicit expressions for the electric and magnetic parts of the Weyl tensor in the Newtonian limit. In general, the magnetic part does not vanish, implying that the Lagrangian evolution of the fluid is not purely local.
We derive the equilibrium hydrostatic equation of a spherical star for any gravitational Lagrangian density of the form $L=\sqrt{-g}f(R)$. The Palatini variational principle for the Helmholtz Lagrangian in the Einstein gauge is used to obtain the field equations in this gauge. The equilibrium hydrostatic equation is obtained and is used to study the Newtonian limit for $f(R)=R-\frac{a^{2}}{3R}$. The same procedure is carried out for the more generally case $f(R)=R-\frac{1}{n+2}\frac{a^{n+1}}{R^{n}}$ giving a good Newtonian limit.
Gravitational radiation can be expressed in terms of an infinite series of radiative, symmetric trace-free (STF) multipole moments which can be connected to the behavior of the source. We consider a truncated model for gravitational radiation from binary systems in which each STF mass and current moment of order l is given by the lowest-order, Newtonian-like l-pole moment of the orbiting masses; we neglect post-Newtonian corrections to each STF moment. Specializing to orbits which are circular (apart from the radiation-induced inspiral), we find an explicit infinite series for the energy flux …
A Lagrangian from which derive the third post-Newtonian (3PN) equations of motion of compact binaries (neglecting the radiation reaction damping) is obtained. The 3PN equations of motion were computed previously by Blanchet and Faye in harmonic coordinates. The Lagrangian depends on the harmonic-coordinate positions, velocities and accelerations of the two bodies. At the 3PN order, the appearance of one undetermined physical parameter λreflects an incompleteness of the point-mass regularization used when deriving the equations of motion. In addition the Lagrangian involves two unphysical (gaug…
The "dialogue of multipoles" matched asymptotic expansion for small black holes in the presence of compact dimensions is extended to the Post-Newtonian order for arbitrary dimensions. Divergences are identified and are regularized through the matching constants, a method valid to all orders and known as Hadamard's partie finie. It is closely related to "subtraction of self-interaction" and shows similarities with the regularization of quantum field theories. The black hole's mass and tension (and the "black hole Archimedes effect") are obtained explicitly at this order, and a Newtonian derivat…
