For a test body orbiting an axisymmetric body in Newtonian gravitational theory with multipole moments Q_L, (and for a charge in a non-relativistic orbit about a charge distribution with the same multipole moments) we show that there exists, in addition to the energy and angular momentum component along the symmetry axis, a conserved quantity analogous to the Carter constant of Kerr spacetimes in general relativity, if the odd-L moments vanish, and the even-L moments satisfy Q_2L = m (Q_2/m)^L. Strangely, this is precisely the relation among mass moments enforced by the no-hair theorems of rotating black holes. By contrast, if Newtonian gravity is supplemented by a multipolar gravitomagnetic field, whose leading term represents frame-dragging (or if the electrostatic field is supplemented by a multipolar magnetic field), we are unable to find an analogous Carter-like constant. This further highlights the very special nature of the Kerr geometry of general relativity.
We compare the Vinti integral of the classic celestial mechanics with a conserved Carter-like integral of motion for an axially-symmetric body in the Newtonian theory that has been recently found by Clifford Will. We demonstrate that the integrals are identical. It sheds new light on the Newtonian limit of the Kerr geometry.
In Newtonian gravity, a stationary axisymmetric system admits a third, Carter-like constant of motion if its mass multipole moments are related to each other in exactly the same manner as for the Kerr black-hole spacetime. The Newtonian source with this property consists of two point masses at rest a fixed distance apart. The integrability of motion about this source was first studied in the 1760s by Euler. We show that the general relativistic analogue of the Euler problem, the Bach-Weyl solution, does not admit a Carter-like constant of motion, first, by showing that it does not possess a no…
We investigate the carter like constant for a particle in a non relativistic dipolar field. This special case is a missing link between carter constant in stationary axially symmetric spacetime such as Kerr solution and its possible Newtonian counterpart. We use this system to carry over the definition of angular momentum from Newtonian mechanics to relativistic stationary axially symmetric stationary spacetime.
We analyze the effect of gravitational radiation reaction on generic orbits around a body with an axisymmetric mass quadrupole moment Q to linear order in Q, to the leading post-Newtonian order, and to linear order in the mass ratio. This system admits three constants of the motion in absence of radiation reaction: energy, angular momentum, and a third constant analogous to the Carter constant. We compute instantaneous and time-averaged rates of change of these three constants. For a point particle orbiting a black hole, Ryan has computed the leading order evolution of the orbit's Carter const…
We construct regular rotating black hole and no-horizon spacetimes based on the recently introduced spherically symmetric generic regular black hole spacetimes related to electric or magnetic charge under nonlinear electrodynamics coupled to general relativity that for special values of the spacetime parameters reduce to the Bardeen and Hayward spacetimes. We show that the weak and strong energy conditions are violated inside the Cauchy horizons of these generic rotating black holes. We give the boundary between the rotating black hole and no-horizon spacetimes and determine the black hole hor…
Nonlocal gravity (NLG) is a classical nonlocal generalization of Einstein's theory of gravitation developed in close analogy with the nonlocal electrodynamics of media. It appears that the nonlocal aspect of the universal gravitational interaction could simulate dark matter. Within the Newtonian regime of NLG, we investigate the deviation of the gravitational force from the Newtonian inverse square law as a consequence of the existence of the effective dark matter. In particular, we work out the magnitude of this deviation in the solar system out to 100 astronomical units. Moreover, we give an…
This is the first in a two-part series in which we extend non-relativistic stochastic mechanics, in the ZSM formulation [1, 2], to semiclassical Newtonian gravity (ZSM-Newton) and semiclassical Newtonian electrodynamics (ZSM-Coulomb), under the assumption that the gravitational and electromagnetic fields are fundamentally classical (i.e., not independently quantized fields). Our key findings are: (1) a derivation of the usual $N$-particle Schr{ö}dinger equation for many particles interacting through operator-valued gravitational or Coulomb potentials, and (2) recovery of the `single-body' Schr…
Continuing the development of the ZSM-Newton/Coulomb approach to semiclassical Newtonian gravity/electrodynamics [1], we formulate a ZSM-Newton/Coulomb version of the large N approximation scheme proposed by Oriols et al. [2]. We show that this new large N scheme makes it possible to self-consistently describe the center-of-mass evolution of a large number of gravitationally/electrostatically interacting, identical, \emph{zbw} particles, without assuming that the particles are weakly coupled, and without entailing the problematic macroscopic semiclassical gravitational/electrostatic cat states…
We present atom-interferometer tests of the local Lorentz invariance of post-Newtonian gravity. An experiment probing for anomalous vertical gravity on Earth, which has already been performed by us, uses the highest-resolution atomic gravimeter so far. The influence of Lorentz violation in electrodynamics is also taken into account, resulting in combined bounds on Lorentz violation in gravity and electrodynamics. Expressed within the standard model extension or Nordtvedt's anisotropic universe model, we limit twelve linear combinations of seven coefficients for Lorentz violation at the part pe…
Plebański's class of nonlinear vacuum electrodynamics is considered which is for several reasons of interest at the present time. In particular the question is answered under which circumstances Maxwell's original field equations are recovered approximately and which post-Maxwellian effects could arrise. To this end a weak field approximation method is developed allowing to calculate post-Maxwellian corrections up to Nth order. In some respect this is analogue of determining "post-newtonian" corrections from relativistic mechanics by a low velocity approximation. As a result we got a series of…
We derive the secular evolution of the orbital elements of a stellar-mass object orbiting a spinning massive black hole. We use the post-Newtonian approximation in harmonic coordinates, with test-body equations of motion for the conservative dynamics that are valid through 3PN order, including spin-orbit, quadrupole and (spin)$^2$ effects, and with radiation-reaction contributions linear in the mass of the body that are valid through 4.5PN order, including the 4PN damping effects of spin-orbit coupling. The evolution equations for the osculating orbit elements are iterated to high PN orders us…
Simpson-Visser (SV) space-times are the simplest globally regular modifications of the Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordstrom and other blak-hole solutions of general relativity. They smoothly interpolate between these black holes and traversable wormholes. After a brief presentation of the Schwarzschild-like and Reissner-Nordstrom-like SV geometries, including their Carter-Penrose diagrams, we show that any static, spherically symmetric SV metric can be obtained as an exact solution to the Einstein field equations sourced by a combination of a minimally coupled phantom scalar field with a nonzero …
Stochastic mechanics (SM), as proposed by Edward Nelson and others in the 20th century, aims to reconstruct quantum mechanics (QM) from a more fundamental theory of classical point particles interacting with a classical-like ether, where said interaction causes the particles to undergo a diffusion process that conserves their average total energy. However, Timothy Wallstrom and others have emphasized that SM runs into the problem that it cannot recover the Schroedinger equation of QM unless an ad hoc quantization condition is assumed. In this thesis, I reformulate SM so that the quantization c…
We modify the Einstein-Schrodinger theory to include a cosmological constant $Λ_z$ which multiplies the symmetric metric, and we show how the theory can be easily coupled to additional fields. The cosmological constant $Λ_z$ is assumed to be nearly cancelled by Schrodinger's cosmological constant $Λ_b$ which multiplies the nonsymmetric fundamental tensor, such that the total $Λ=Λ_z+Λ_b$ matches measurement. The resulting theory becomes exactly Einstein-Maxwell theory in the limit as $|Λ_z|\to\infty$. For $|Λ_z|\sim 1/(Planck length)^2$ the field equations match the ordinary Einstein and Maxwel…
After a brief review of the foundations of (pre-metric) electromagnetism, we explore some physical consequences of electrodynamics in curved spacetime. In general, new electromagnetic couplings and related phenomena are induced by the spacetime curvature. The applications of astrophysical interest considered here correspond essentially to the following geometries: the Schwarzschild spacetime and the spacetime around a rotating spherical mass in the weak field and slow rotation regime. In the latter, we use the Parameterised Post-Newtonian (PPN) formalism. We also explore the hypothesis that th…
In this paper we consider general relativity and its combination with scalar quantum electrodynamics (QED) as an effective quantum field theory at energies well below the Planck scale. This enables us to compute the one-loop quantum corrections to the Newton and Coulomb potential induced by the combination of graviton and photon fluctuations. We derive the relevant Feynman rules and compute the nonanalytical contributions to the one-loop scattering matrix for charged scalars in the nonrelativistic limit. In particular, we derive the post-Newtonian corrections of order $Gm/\text c^2 r$ from gen…

The Bose-Marletto-Vedral (BMV) experiment [3, 4] is a proposal for testing the quantum nature of gravity with entanglement due to Newtonian gravity. This proposal has stimulated controversy on how the entanglement due to Newtonian gravity is related to the essence of quantum gravity and the existence of gravitons. Motivated by this, we analyze the entanglement generation between two charged particles coupled to a photon field. We assume that each particle is in a superposition of two trajectories and that the photon field is initially in a coherent state. Based on covariant quantum electrodyna…
We extend the canonical formalism for the motion of $N$-particles in lineal gravity to include charges. Under suitable coordinate conditions and boundary conditions the determining equation of the Hamiltonian (a kind of transcendental equation) is derived from the matching conditions for the dilaton field at the particles' position. The canonical equations of motion are derived from this determining equation. For the equal mass case the canonical equations in terms of the proper time can be exactly solved in terms of hyperbolic and/or trigonometric functions. In electrodynamics with zero cosmo…
The motion of test particles in stationary axisymmetric gravitational fields is generally nonintegrable unless a nontrivial constant of motion, in addition to energy and angular momentum along the symmetry axis, exists. The Carter constant in Kerr-de Sitter spacetime is the only example known to date. Proposed astrophysical tests of the black-hole no-hair theorem have often involved integrable gravitational fields more general than the Kerr family, but the existence of such fields has been a matter of debate. To elucidate this problem, we treat its Newtonian analogue by systematically searchin…
In this work, we consider that in energy scales greater than the Planck energy, the geometry, fundamental physical constants, as charge, mass, speed of light and Newtonian constant of gravitation, and matter fields will depend on the scale. This type of theory is known as Rainbow Gravity. We coupled the nonlinear electrodynamics to the Rainbow Gravity, defining a new mass function $M(r,ε)$, such that we may formulate new classes of spherically symmetric regular black hole solutions, where the curvature invariants are well-behaved in all spacetime. The main differences between the General Relat…
