A family of vector fields that are the infinitesimal generators of determined one-parameter groups of transformations are constructed. It is shown that these vector fields represent symmetries of the system of differential equations interrelated by the axially symmetric Laplace equation and a certain supplementary equation. Group-invariant solutions of this system of equations are obtained by means of two alternative methods, and it is proved that these solutions turn out to be the family of axisymmetric potentials related to specific gravitational multipoles. The existence of these symmetries provides us with a generalization of the fact that the Newtonian Monopole is defined by the solution of the Laplace equation with spherical symmetry, and it allows us to extract from all solutions of this equation those with the prescribed Newtonian Multipole Moments.
The multipole moments are defined as the multipole expansion coefficients of the gravitational field at infinity. In Newtonian gravity, the multipole moments are determined by the source distribution -- the multipole integrals of the source. In this paper, we show that the multipole moments in general relativity cannot be determined by the multipole integrals of the source. We provide the multipole integrals in static axial spacetimes, such as, the Curzon spacetime. The Curzon spacetime possesses the same multipole integrals of the source with the Schwarzschild spacetime, while they possess di…
The tidal Love numbers of a black hole vanish, and this is often taken to imply that the hole's tidally induced multipole moments vanish also. An obstacle to establishing a link between these statements is that the multipole moments of individual bodies are not defined in general relativity, when the bodies are subjected to a mutual gravitational interaction. In a previous publication [Phys. Rev. D 103, 064023 (2021)] I promoted the view that individual multipole moments can be defined when the mutual interaction is sufficiently weak to be described by a post-Newtonian expansion. In this view,…
New expressions for the multipole moments of an isolated post-Newtonian source, in the form of surface integrals in the outer near-zone, are derived. As an application we compute the ``source'' quadrupole moment of a Schwarzschild solution boosted to uniform velocity, at the third post-Newtonian (3PN) order. We show that the consideration of this boosted Schwarzschild solution (BSS) is enough to uniquely determine one of the ambiguity parameters in the recent computation of the gravitational wave generation by compact binaries at 3PN order: zeta=-7/33. We argue that this value is the only one …
This paper is motivated by the need to improve the post-Newtonian (PN) amplitude accuracy of waveforms for gravitational waves generated by inspiralling compact binaries, both for use in data analysis and in the comparison between post-Newtonian approximations and numerical relativity computations. It presents: (i) the non-linear couplings between multipole moments of general post-Newtonian matter sources up to order 3.5PN, including all contributions from tails, tails-of-tails and the non-linear memory effect; and (ii) the source mass-type octupole moment of (non-spinning) compact binaries up…
We derive the equation of motion for the relativistic compact binaries in the post-Newtonian approximation taking explicitly their strong internal gravity into account. For this purpose we adopt the method of the point particle limit where the equation of motion is expressed in terms of the surface integrals. We examine carefully the behavior of the surface integrals in the derivation. As a result, we obtain the Einstein-Infeld-Hoffman equation of motion at the first post-Newtonian (1PN) order, and a part of the 2PN order which depends on the quadrupole moments and the spins of component stars…
We examine the tidal deformation of a nonrotating compact body (material body or black hole) in general relativity. The body's exterior metric is calculated in a simultaneous expansion in powers of the ratio between the distance to the body and three distinct length scales: the radius of curvature of the external spacetime in which the body is inserted, the scale of spatial inhomogeneity of the curvature, and the scale of temporal variation. The metric is valid in the body's immediate neighborhood, which excludes the external matter responsible for the tidal environment. The body's tidal respo…
In order to shed some light in the meaning of the relativistic multipolar expansions we consider different static solutions of the axially symmetric vacuum Einstein equations that in the non relativistic limit have same Newtonian moments. The motion of test particles orbiting around different deformed attraction centers with the same Newtonian limit is studied paying special attention to the advance of the perihelion. We find discrepancies in the fourth order of the dimensionless parameter (mass of the attraction center)/(semilatus rectum). An evolution equation for the difference of the radia…
Using effective field theory techniques we calculate the source multipole moments needed to obtain the spin contributions to the power radiated in gravitational waves from inspiralling compact binaries to third Post-Newtonian order (3PN). The multipoles depend linearly and quadratically on the spins and include both spin(1)spin(2) and spin(1)spin(1) components. The results in this paper provide the last missing ingredient required to determine the phase evolution to 3PN including all spin effects which we will report in a separate paper.
Using the NRGR effective field theory formalism we calculate the remaining source multipole moments necessary to obtain the spin contributions to the gravitational wave amplitude to 2.5 Post-Newtonian (PN) order. We also reproduce the tail contribution to the waveform linear in spin at 2.5PN arising from the nonlinear interaction between the current quadrupole and the mass monopole.
The present paper derives the post-Newtonian Lagrangian of translational motion of N arbitrary-structured bodies with all mass and spin multipoles in a scalar-tensor theory of gravity. The multipoles depend on time and evolve in accordance with their own dynamic equations of motion. The Lagrangian is retrieved from the post-Newtonian equations of motion by solving the inverse problem of the Lagrangian mechanics and generalizes a well-known Lagrangian of pole-dipole-quadrupole massive particles to the particles of higher multipolarity. Analytic treatment of the higher-order multipole contributi…
We discuss the effects of the black holes' spin-multipole structure in the orbital dynamics of binary black holes according to general relativity, focusing on the leading-post-Newtonian-order couplings at each order in an expansion in the black holes' spins. We first review previous widely confirmed results up through fourth order in spin, observe suggestive patterns therein, and discuss how the results can be extrapolated to all orders in spin with minimal information from the test-body limit. We then justify this extrapolation by providing a complete derivation within the post-Newtonian fram…
The gravitational radiation originating from a compact binary system in circular orbit is usually expressed as an infinite sum over radiative multipole moments. In a slow-motion approximation, each multipole moment is then expressed as a post-Newtonian expansion in powers of v/c, the ratio of the orbital velocity to the speed of light. The bare multipole truncation of the radiation consists in keeping only the leading-order term in the post-Newtonian expansion of each moment, but summing over all the multipole moments. In the case of binary systems with small mass ratios, the bare multipole se…
Multipole moments carry a lot of information about the gravitational field. Nonetheless, knowing all the multipole moments of an object does not determine conclusively the nature of the object itself. In particular, the multipole moments of the Kerr spacetime are not unique. Here we construct several physically motivated Newtonian objects with multipole moments identical to those of Kerr. Moreover, we also provide a description of how to include post-Newtonian corrections to these objects without changing their multipole moments.
The static solutions of the axially symmetric vacuum Einstein equations with a finite number of Relativistic Multipole Moments are described by means of a function that can be written in the same analytic form as the Newtonian gravitational multipole potential. A family of so-called MSA (Multipole-Symmetry Adapted) coordinates are introduced and calculated at any multipole order to perform the transformation of the Weyl solutions. In analogy with a previous result obtained in Newtonian gravity, the existence of a symmetry of a certain system of differential equations leading to the determinati…
We study the planar motion of test particles in gravitational fields produced by an external material halo, of the type found in many astrophysical systems, such as elliptical galaxies and globular clusters. Both the Newtonian and the general-relativistic dynamics are examined, and in the relativistic case the dynamics of both massive and massless particles are investigated. The halo field is given in general by a multipole expansion; we restrict ourselves to multipole fields of pure order, whose Newtonian potentials are homogeneous polynomials in cartesian coordinates. A pure (n)-pole field h…
We analyse an eleven-orbit inspiral of a non-spinning black-hole binary with mass ratio q=M1/M2=4. The numerically obtained gravitational waveforms are compared with post-Newtonian (PN) predictions including several sub-dominant multipoles up to multipolar indices (l=5,m=5). We find that (i) numerical and post-Newtonian predictions of the phase of the (2,2) mode accumulate a phase difference of about 0.35 rad at the PN cut off frequency 0.1 for the Taylor T1 approximant when numerical and PN waveforms are matched over a window in the early inspiral phase; (ii) in contrast to previous studies o…
The article reviews the current status of a theoretical approach to the problem of the emission of gravitational waves by isolated systems in the context of general relativity. Part A of the article deals with general post-Newtonian sources. The exterior field of the source is investigated by means of a combination of analytic post-Minkowskian and multipolar approximations. The physical observables in the far-zone of the source are described by a specific set of radiative multipole moments. By matching the exterior solution to the metric of the post-Newtonian source in the near-zone we obtain …
We calculate the time delay of light in the gravitational field of a slowly moving body with arbitrary multipoles (mass and spin multipole moments) by the Time-Transfer-Function (TTF) formalism. The parameters we use, first introduced by Kopeikin for a gravitational source at rest, make the integration of the TTF very elegant and simple. Results completely coincide with expressions from the literature. The results for a moving body (with constant velocity) with complete multipole-structure are new, according to our knowledge.
Perhaps the most powerful method for deriving the Newtonian gravitational interaction between two masses is the multipole expansion. Once inner multipoles are calculated for a particular shape this shape can be rotated, translated, and even converted to an outer multipole with well established methods. The most difficult stage of the multipole expansion is generating the initial inner multipole moments without resorting to three dimensional numerical integration of complex functions. Previous work has produced expressions for the low degree inner multipoles for certain elementary solids. This …
It is shown that the known solutions for nonexpanding impulsive gravitational waves generated by null particles of arbitrary multipole structure can be obtained by boosting the Weyl solutions describing static sources with arbitrary multipole moments, at least in a Minkowski background. We also discuss the possibility of boosting static sources in (anti-) de Sitter backgrounds, for which exact solutions are not known, to obtain the known solutions for null multipole particles in these backgrounds.
This paper employs the post-Newtonian approximations of scalar-tensor theory of gravity along with the Cartesian STF tensors and the Blanchet-Damour multipole formalism to derive translational and rotational equations of motion of N extended bodies with arbitrary distribution of mass and velocity. We assume that spacetime can be covered by a global coordinate chart which is Minkowskian at infinity. We also introduce N local coordinate charts adapted to each body and covering a finite domain of space around the body. Gravitational field of each body is parametrized by an infinite set of the bod…
For a test body orbiting an axisymmetric body in Newtonian gravitational theory with multipole moments Q_L, (and for a charge in a non-relativistic orbit about a charge distribution with the same multipole moments) we show that there exists, in addition to the energy and angular momentum component along the symmetry axis, a conserved quantity analogous to the Carter constant of Kerr spacetimes in general relativity, if the odd-L moments vanish, and the even-L moments satisfy Q_2L = m (Q_2/m)^L. Strangely, this is precisely the relation among mass moments enforced by the no-hair theorems of rot…
We present a new approach to factorize and resum the post-Newtonian (PN) waveform for generic equatorial motion to be used within effective-one-body (EOB) based waveform models. The new multipolar waveform factorization improves previous prescriptions in that: (i) the generic Newtonian contribution is factored out from each multipole; (ii) the circular part is factored out and resummed using standard EOB methods and (iii) the residual, 2PN-accurate, noncircular part, and in particular the tail contribution, is additionally resummed using Padé approximants. The resulting waveform is validated i…
Using the gravitational potential and source multipole moments bilinear in the spins, first computed to next-to-leading order (NLO) in the post-Newtonian (PN) expansion within the effective field theory (EFT) framework, we complete here the derivation of the dynamical invariants and flux-balance equations, including energy and angular momentum. We use these results to calculate spin-spin effects in the orbital frequency and accumulated phase to NLO for circular orbits. We also derive the linear momentum and center-of-mass fluxes and associated kick-velocity, to the highest relevant PN order. W…
This paper derives the expressions of the multipole moments of an isolated gravitating source with an accuracy corresponding to the second post-Newtonian (2-PN) approximation of general relativity. The moments are obtained by a procedure of matching of the external gravitational field of the source to the inner field, and are found to be given by integrals extending over the stress-energy distribution of the matter fields and the gravitational field. Although this is not manifest on their expressions, the moments have a compact support limited to the material source only (they are thus perfect…
This paper constructs the multipole expansion (in general relativity) of the gravitational field generated by a slowly-moving isolated source. We introduce some definitions for the source multipole moments, valid to all orders in a post-Newtonian expansion, and depending in a well-defined way on the total stress-energy pseudo-tensor of the material and gravitational fields. Previously obtained expressions of the source multipole moments are recovered in the appropriate limits. The source moments parametrize the linearized approximation of the gravitational field exterior to the source, as comp…
Perturbations of satellite orbits in the gravitational field of a body with a mass monopole and arbitrary spin multipole moments are considered for an axisymmetric and stationary situation. Periodic and secular effects caused by the central gravitomagnetic field are derived by a first order perturbation theory. For a central spin-dipole field these results reduce to the well known Lense-Thirring effects.
The mass-type quadrupole moment of inspiralling compact binaries (without spins) is computed at the fourth post-Newtonian (4PN) approximation of general relativity. The multipole moments are defined by matching between the field in the exterior zone of the matter system and the PN field in the near zone, following the multipolar-post-Minkowskian (MPM)-PN formalism. The matching implies a specific regularization for handling infra-red (IR) divergences of the multipole moments at infinity, based on the Hadamard finite part procedure. On the other hand, the calculation entails ultra-violet (UV) d…
We apply an effective field theory method for the gravitational interaction of compact stars, developed within the context of general relativity, to Newtonian gravity. In this effective theory a compact object is represented by a point particle possessing generic gravitational multipole moments. The time evolution of the multipoles depends on excitations due to external fields. This can formally be described by a response function of the multipoles to applied fields. The poles of this response correspond to the normal oscillation modes of the star. This gives rise to resonances between modes a…
We give analytic expressions for the gravitational inner spherical multipole moments, q_{lm} with l <= 5, for 11 elementary solid shapes. These moments, in conjunction with their known rotational and translational properties, can be used to calculate precisely the moments of complex objects that may be assembled from the elementary shapes. We also give an analytic expression for the gravitational force between two rectangular solids at arbitrary separations. These expressions are useful for computing the gravitational properties of complex instruments, such as those used in equivalence princip…
Extremely high precision of near-future radio/optical interferometric observatories like SKA, Gaia, SIM and the unparalleled sensitivity of LIGO/LISA gravitational-wave detectors demands more deep theoretical treatment of relativistic effects in the propagation of electromagnetic signals through variable gravitational fields of the solar system, oscillating and precessing neutron stars, coalescing binary systems, exploding supernova, and colliding galaxies. Especially important for future gravitational-wave observatories is the problem of propagation of light rays in the field of multipolar gr…
Gravitational-wave observations of binary black holes currently rely on theoretical models that predict the dominant multipoles (l,m) of the radiation during inspiral, merger and ringdown. We introduce a simple method to include the subdominant multipoles to binary black hole gravitational waveforms, given a frequency-domain model for the dominant multipoles. The amplitude and phase of the original model are appropriately stretched and rescaled using post-Newtonian results (for the inspiral), perturbation theory (for the ringdown), and a smooth transition between the two. No additional tuning …
We revisit the problem of flux-balance equations for isolated post-Newtonian matter systems due to the emission of gravitational waves. In particular we show by a local derivation confined to the system, using the expression of radiation-reaction forces up to the 3.5PN order, that not only the energy, angular momentum and linear momentum of the system, but also the position of its center of mass, obey some (non-trivial) flux-balance equations. The balance equation for the center-of-mass position completes the description of the secular evolution by gravitational waves of relativistic post-Newt…
Following the method of Hoenselaers and Perjés we present a new corrected and dimensionally consistent set of multipole gravitational and electromagnetic moments for stationary axisymmetric spacetimes. Furthermore, we use our results to compute the multipole moments, both gravitational and electromagnetic, of a Kerr-Newman black hole.
As the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo interferometers, soon to be joined by the KAGRA interferometer, increase their sensitivity, they detect an ever-larger number of gravitational waves with a significant presence of higher multipoles in addition to the dominant $(2, 2)$ multipole. These higher multipoles can be detected with different approaches, such as the minimally-modeled burst search methods, and here we discuss one such approach based on the coherent WaveBurst pipeline (cWB). During the inspiral phase the higher multipoles produce chirps whose instantaneous frequency is a multiple of…
A binary system, composed of a compact object orbiting around a massive central body, will emit gravitational waves which will depend on the central body's spacetime geometry. We expect that the gravitational wave observables will somehow ``encode'' the information about the spacetime structure. On the other hand, it has been known for some time that the geometry around an axisymmetric body can be described by its (Geroch-Hansen) multipole moments. Therefore one can speculate that using the multipole moments can prove to be a helpful tool for extracting this information. We will try to demonst…
We give a surface integral derivation of post-1-Newtonian translational equations of motion for a system of arbitrarily structured bodies, including the coupling to all the bodies' mass and current multipole moments. The derivation requires only that the post-1-Newtonian vacuum field equations are satisfied in weak-field regions between the bodies; the bodies' internal gravity can be arbitrarily strong. The derivation extends previous results of Damour, Soffel and Xu (DSX) for weakly self-gravitating bodies for which the post-1-Newtonian field equations are satisfied everywhere. The derivation…
In this work we analyze the emission of gravitational waves from a gravitational system described by a Newtonian term plus a Hénon-Heiles term. The main concern is to analyze how the inclusion of the Newtonian term changes the emission of gravitational waves, considering its emission in the chaotic and regular regime.
Gravitational radiation can be expressed in terms of an infinite series of radiative, symmetric trace-free (STF) multipole moments which can be connected to the behavior of the source. We consider a truncated model for gravitational radiation from binary systems in which each STF mass and current moment of order l is given by the lowest-order, Newtonian-like l-pole moment of the orbiting masses; we neglect post-Newtonian corrections to each STF moment. Specializing to orbits which are circular (apart from the radiation-induced inspiral), we find an explicit infinite series for the energy flux …
We examine the Newtonian potential in gravitational cohomology. This is given by a symmetric, two-index tensor field, which satisfies the wave equation in empty space. Furthermore, the associated gravitational field strength, obtained by applying the coboundary operator to the potential, is constructed for the case of a stationary point mass and shown to give the classical result.
General relativistic deflection of light by mass, dipole, and quadrupole moments of gravitational field of a moving massive planet in the Solar system is derived in the approximation of the linearized Einstein equations. All terms of order 1 microarcsecond are taken into account, parametrized, and classified in accordance with their physical origin. We discuss the observational capabilities of the near-future optical and radio interferometers for detecting the Doppler modulation of the radial deflection, and the dipolar and quadrupolar light-ray bendings by Jupiter and the Saturn.
We extend the analytical determination of the main radial potential describing (within the effective one-body formalism) the gravitational interaction of two bodies beyond the 4th post-Newtonian approximation recently obtained by us. This extension is done to linear order in the mass ratio by applying analytical gravitational self-force theory (for a particle in circular orbit around a Schwarzschild black hole) to Detweiler's gauge-invariant redshift variable. By using the version of black hole perturbation theory developed by Mano, Suzuki and Takasugi, we have pushed the analytical determinat…
Expression for second post-Newtonian level gravitational deflection angle of massive particles is obtained in a model independent framework. Several of its important implications including the possibility of testing gravitational theories at that level are discussed.
We present expressions for the energy, linear momentum and angular momentum carried away from an isolated system by gravitational radiation based on spin-weighted spherical harmonics decomposition of the Weyl scalar $Ψ_4$. We also show that the expressions derived are equivalent to the common expressions obtained when using a framework based on perturbations of a Schwazschild background. The main idea is to collect together all the different expressions in a uniform and consistent way. The formulae presented here are directly applicable to the calculation of the radiated energy, linear momentu…
The set up of matched filters for the detection of gravitational waves from in-spiraling compact binaries is usually carried out using the restricted post-Newtonian approximation: the filter phase is modelled including post-Newtonian corrections, whereas the amplitude is retained at the Newtonian order. Here we investigate the effects of the introduction of post-Newtonian corrections also to the amplitude and we discuss some of the implications for signal detection and parameter estimation.
In this review we present the theoretical background for treating General Relativity as an effective field theory and focus on the concrete results of such a treatment. As a result we present the calculations of the low-energy leading gravitational corrections to the Newtonian potential between two sources.
The accuracy of the post-Newtonian waveforms, both in standard and Pade form, is determined by computing their matched-filtering overlap integral with a reference waveform obtained from black-hole perturbation theory.
For a modified Randall-Sundrum model [Phys. Rev. D 88 (2013) 025048], the graviton equations are derived and the mass spectrum found. The latter includes a massless graviton and a continuum mass with a gap. There is no negative mass-squared in the spectrum, so the model is stable. The gravitational Newtonian limit is obtained with an exponentially suppressed modification from extra dimension.
We have found some analytical cosmological solutions to MOdified Gravity (MOG). These solutions describe different evolutionary epochs of an isotropic and homogeneous universe. During each epoch, the evolution of cosmological perturbation is studied in the Newtonian framework and compared with the corresponding results of GR.
An equation of motion for relativistic compact binaries is derived through the third post-Newtonian (3 PN) approximation of general relativity. The strong field point particle limit and multipole expansion of the stars are used to solve iteratively the harmonically relaxed Einstein equations. We take into account the Lorentz contraction on the multipole moments defined in our previous works. We then derive a 3 PN acceleration of the binary orbital motion of the two spherical compact stars based on a surface integral approach which is a direct consequence of local energy momentum conservation. …
Tidal forces cause inspiralling binary neutron stars to deform, leaving a measurable imprint on the gravitational waves they emit. The induced stellar multipoles are an added source of gravitational radiation and modify the orbital dynamics, producing a slight acceleration of the coalescence which manifests as a phase shift in the waveform relative to point-particles. The dominant piece of this tidal phase comes from the mass quadrupoles, which contribute at fifth post-Newtonian order (5PN). Current quadrupoles and mass octupoles contribute at higher orders. For spinning neutron stars, additio…
We compute the non-linear memory contributions to the gravitational-wave amplitudes for compact binaries in eccentric orbits at the third post-Newtonian (3PN) order in general relativity. These contributions are hereditary in nature as they are sourced by gravitational waves emitted during the binary's entire dynamical past. Combining these with already available instantaneous and tail contributions we get the complete 3PN accurate gravitational waveform.
We compute the hereditary part of the third post-Newtonian accurate gravitational energy radiation from hyperbolic scatterings (and parabolic scatterings) of non-spinning compact objects. We employ large angular momentum ($j$) expansion, and compute it to the relative $1/j^{11}$ order (so the first 12 terms). For parabolic scattering case, the exact solution is computed. At the end, the completely collected expression of the energy radiation upto the third post-Newtonian and from $1/j^{3}$ to $1/j^{15}$ order, is presented including the instantaneous contribution.
We complete the analytical determination, at the 4th post-Newtonian approximation, of the main radial potential describing the gravitational interaction of two bodies within the effective one-body formalism. The (non logarithmic) coefficient a_5 (nu) measuring this 4th post-Newtonian interaction potential is found to be linear in the symmetric mass ratio nu. Its nu-independent part a_5 (0) is obtained by an analytical gravitational self-force calculation that unambiguously resolves the formal infrared divergencies which currently impede its direct post-Newtonian calculation. Its nu-linear part…
