We compute the non-linear memory contributions to the gravitational-wave amplitudes for compact binaries in eccentric orbits at the third post-Newtonian (3PN) order in general relativity. These contributions are hereditary in nature as they are sourced by gravitational waves emitted during the binary's entire dynamical past. Combining these with already available instantaneous and tail contributions we get the complete 3PN accurate gravitational waveform.
We present the first analytic computation of the Detweiler-Barack-Sago gauge-invariant redshift function for a small mass in {\it eccentric} orbit around a {\it spinning} black hole. Our results give the redshift contributions that mix eccentricity and spin effects, through second order in eccentricity, second order in spin parameter, and the eight-and-a-half post-Newtonian order.
We compute the tail contributions to the gravitational-wave mode amplitudes for compact binaries in eccentric orbits at the third post-Newtonian order of general relativity. We combine them with the already available instantaneous pieces and include the post-adiabatic corrections required to fully account for the effects of radiation-reaction forces on the motion. We compare the resulting waveform in the small eccentricity limit to the circular one, finding perfect agreement.
The inspiral and merger of supermassive black hole binary systems with high orbital eccentricity are among the promising sources of the advanced gravitational wave observatories. In this paper we derive analytic ready-to-use first post-Newtonian eccentric waveform in Fourier domain with the use of Hansen coefficients. Introducing generic perturbations of celestial mechanics we have generalized the Hansen expansion to the first post-Newtonian order which are then used to express the waveforms. Taking into account the high eccentricity of the orbit leads to the appearance of secular terms in the…

Gravitational waves radiated during binary black hole coalescence is a perfect probe for studying the characteristics of strong gravity. Advanced techniques for creating numerical relativity substitute models for eccentric binary black hole systems are presumed to become more crucial in existing and anticipated gravitational wave detectors. The imprint on the observation data of the gravitational wave emitted by the binary coalescence enhances the two body system studies. The aim of this study is to present an overview of the change in characteristics behaviours of hierarchical massive astroph…
Black hole binaries on non-eccentric orbits form an important subclass of gravitational wave sources, but it is a non-trivial issue to construct numerical initial data with minimal initial eccentricity for numerical simulations. We compute post-Newtonian orbital parameters for quasi-spherical orbits using the method of Buonanno, Chen and Damour (2006) and examine the resulting eccentricity in numerical simulations. Four different methods are studied resulting from the choice of Taylor-expanded or effective-one-body Hamiltonians, and from two choices for the energy flux. The eccentricity increa…
We use equations of motion containing gravitational radiation-reaction terms through 4.5 post-Newtonian order to calculate the late-time eccentricities of inspiraling binary systems of non-spinning compact bodies as they cross the detection threshold of ground-based gravitational-wave interferometers. The initial eccentricities can be as large as 0.999. We find that the final eccentricities are systematically smaller than those predicted by the leading quadrupole approximation, by as much as 30 percent for a 300 solar mass binary crossing the LIGO/Virgo detection threshold at 10 Hz, or eight p…
We integrate the third and a half post-Newtonian equations of motion for a fully generic binary black hole system, allowing both for non-circular orbits, and for one or both of the black holes to spin, in any orientation. Using the second post-Newtonian order expression beyond the leading order quadrupole formula, we study the gravitational waveforms produced from such systems. Our results are validated by comparing to Taylor T4 in the aligned-spin circular cases, and the additional effects and modulations introduced by the eccentricity and the spins are analyzed. We use the framework to evalu…
While there has been much success in understanding the orbital dynamics and gravitational wave emission of eccentric compact binaries in the post-Newtonian formalism, some problems still remain. The largest of these concerns hereditary effects: non-linear phenomena related to the scattering off of the background curved spacetime (tails) and to the generation of gravitational waves by gravitational waves (memory). Currently, these hereditary effects are only known numerically for arbitrary eccentricity through infinite sums of Bessel functions, with closed-form, analytic results only available …
We analytically compute, through the six-and-a-half post-Newtonian order, the second-order-in-eccentricity piece of the Detweiler-Barack-Sago gauge-invariant redshift function for a small mass in eccentric orbit around a Schwarzschild black hole. Using the first law of mechanics for eccentric orbits [A. Le Tiec, Phys. Rev. D {\bf 92}, 084021 (2015)] we transcribe our result into a correspondingly accurate knowledge of the second radial potential of the effective-one-body formalism [A. Buonanno and T. Damour, Phys. Rev. D {\bf 59}, 084006 (1999)]. We compare our newly acquired analytical inform…
Using the canonical Arnowitt-Deser-Misner Hamiltonian formalism, a "first law of mechanics" is established for binary systems of point masses moving along generic stable bound (eccentric) orbits. This relationship is checked to hold within the post-Newtonian approximation to general relativity, up to third (3PN) order. Several applications are discussed, including the use of gravitational self-force results to inform post-Newtonian theory and the effective one-body model for eccentric-orbit compact binaries.
Compact object binaries formed from dynamics interactions will generically have non-zero orbital eccentricity. The gravitational waves from such binaries can change drastically depending on how large the eccentricity is, ranging from emitted in small a subset of orbital harmonics at low eccentricities, to being concentrated into intense bursts of radiation from each pericenter passage at large eccentricities. Gravitational waves from such highly eccentric binaries present themselves an intriguing systems for probing fundamental physics, but also present interesting challenges in terms of detec…
We present the first comparison between numerical relativity (NR) simulations of an eccentric binary black hole system with corresponding post-Newtonian (PN) results. We evolve an equal-mass, non-spinning configuration with an initial eccentricity e ~ 0.1 for 21 gravitational wave cycles before merger, and find agreement in the gravitational wave phase with an adiabatic eccentric PN model with 2 PN radiation reaction within 0.1 radians for 10 cycles. The NR and PN phase difference grows to 0.7 radians by 5 cycles before merger. We find that these results can be obtained by expanding the eccent…
The detection of GW150914 by ground based gravitational wave observatories has brought about a new era in astrophysics. At optimal sensitivity, these observatories are expected to detect several events each year, with one or two of these occurring with non-negligible eccentricity. Such eccentric binaries will emit bursts of gravitational radiation during every pericenter passage, where orbital velocities can reach greater than ten percent the speed of light. As a result, such binaries may prove to be powerful probes of extreme gravitational physics and astrophysics. A promising method of achie…
Inspiralling compact binaries are expected to circularize before their gravitational-wave signals reach the sensitive frequency band of ground-based detectors. Current searches for gravitational waves from compact binaries using the LIGO and Virgo detectors therefore use circular templates to construct matched filters. Binary formation models have been proposed which suggest that some systems detectable by the LIGO--Virgo network may have non-negligible eccentricity. We investigate the ability of the restricted 3.5 post-Newtonian order TaylorF2 template bank, used by LIGO and Virgo to search f…
The article provides ready-to-use 1pN-accurate frequency-domain gravitational wave forms for eccentric nonspinning compact binaries of arbitrary mass ratio including the first post-Newtonian (1pN) point particle corrections to the far-zone gravitational wave amplitude, given in terms of tensor spherical harmonics. The averaged equations for the decay of the eccentricity and growth of radial frequency due to radiation reaction are used to provide stationary phase approximations to the frequency-domain wave forms.
We probe the ability of various types of post-Newtonian(PN)-accurate circular templates to capture inspiral gravitational-wave (GW) signals from compact binaries having tiny orbital eccentricities. The GW signals are constructed by adapting the phasing formalism, available in T. Damour, A. Gopakumar, and B. R. Iyer, [Phys. Rev. D 70, 064028 (2004)], employing the orbital energy and the time-eccentricity to describe the orbital evolution. Using the fitting factor estimates, relevant for the initial LIGO, we show that circular templates, based on the adiabatic TaylorT1, complete adiabatic Taylor…
The Detweiler-Barack-Sago redshift function for particles moving along slightly eccentric equatorial orbits around a Kerr black hole is currently known up to the second order in eccentricity, second order in spin parameter, and the 8.5 post-Newtonian order. We improve the analytical computation of such a gauge-invariant quantity by including terms up to the fourth order in eccentricity at the same post-Newtonian approximation level. We also check that our results agrees with the corresponding post-Newtonian expectation of the same quantity, calculated by using the currently known Hamiltonian f…
We derive analytic expressions that provide Fourier domain gravitational wave (GW) response function for compact binaries inspiraling along moderately eccentric orbits. These expressions include amplitude corrections to the two GW polarization states that are accurate to the first post-Newtonian (PN) order. Additionally, our fully 3PN accurate GW phase evolution incorporates eccentricity effects up to sixth order at each PN order. Further, we develop a prescription to incorporate analytically the effects of 3PN accurate periastron advance in the GW phase evolution. This is how we provide a rea…

We calculate the eccentricity dependence of the high-order post-Newtonian (PN) series for the generalized redshift invariant $\langle u^t \rangle_τ$ for eccentric-orbit extreme-mass-ratio inspirals on a Schwarzschild background. These results are calculated within first-order black hole perturbation theory (BHPT) using Regge-Wheeler-Zerilli (RWZ) gauge. Our \textsc{Mathematica} code is based on a familiar procedure, using PN expansion of the Mano-Suzuki-Takasugi (MST) analytic function formalism for $l$ modes up to a certain maximum and then using a direct general-$l$ PN expansion of the RWZ e…

While most binary inspirals are expected to have circularized before they enter the LIGO/Virgo frequency band, a small fraction of those binaries could have non-negligible orbital eccentricity depending on their formation channel. Hence, it is important to accurately model eccentricity effects in waveform models used to detect those binaries, infer their properties, and shed light on their astrophysical environment. We develop a multipolar effective-one-body (EOB) eccentric waveform model for compact binaries whose components have spins aligned or anti-aligned with the orbital angular momentum…
We compare different methods of computing the orbital eccentricity of quasi-circular binary black hole systems using the orbital variables and gravitational wave phase and frequency. For eccentricities of about a per cent, most methods work satisfactorily. For small eccentricity, however, the gravitational wave phase allows a particularly clean and reliable measurement of the eccentricity. Furthermore, we measure the decay of the orbital eccentricity during the inspiral and find reasonable agreement with post-Newtonian results. Finally, we measure the periastron advance of non-spinning binary …
One of the major assumptions in the search for gravitational wave signatures from massive and supermassive black hole binaries with LISA, is that these systems will have circularized before entering the LISA bandwidth. Current astrophysical simulations now suggest that systems could have a non-negligible eccentricity in the LISA band, and an important level of eccentricity in the Pulsar Timing regime. In this work, we use a set of source catalogues from astrophysically motivated models of massive black hole binary formation and assume a one year LISA mission lifetime. Depending on the model in…
We present a method for solving the first-order field equations in a post-Newtonian (PN) expansion. Our calculations generalize work of Bini and Damour and subsequently Kavanagh et al., to consider eccentric orbits on a Schwarzschild background. We derive expressions for the retarded metric perturbation at the location of the particle for all $\ell$-modes. We find that, despite first appearances, the Regge-Wheeler gauge metric perturbation is $C^0$ at the particle for all $\ell$. As a first use of our solutions, we compute the gauge-invariant quantity $\langle U \rangle$ through 4PN while simu…
The equations of motion for spinning compact binaries on eccentric orbits are treated perturbatively in powers of a fractional mass-difference ordering parameter. The solution is valid through first order in the mass-difference parameter. A canonical point transformation removes the leading order terms of the spin-orbit Hamiltonian which induce a wiggling precession of the orbital angular momentum around the conserved total angular momentum, a precession which disappears in the case of equal masses or one single spin. Action-angle variables are applied which make a canonical perturbation theor…
Searching for gravitational-wave signals emitted by eccentric compact binaries using a non-eccentric template bank: implications for ground-based detectors
Inspiraling compact binaries with non-negligible orbital eccentricities are plausible gravitational wave (GW) sources for the upcoming network of GW observatories. In this paper, we present two prescriptions to compute post-Newtonian (PN) accurate inspiral templates for such binaries. First, we adapt and extend the post-circular scheme of Yunes {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. D 80, 084001 (2009)] to obtain a Fourier-domain inspiral approximant that incorporates the effects of PN-accurate orbital eccentricity evolution. This results in a fully analytic frequency-domain inspiral waveform with Newtonian…
We present a detailed analysis of the expected signal-to-noise ratios of supermassive black hole binaries on eccentric orbits observed by pulsar timing arrays. We derive several analytical relations that extend the results of Peters and Mathews [Phys. Rev. D 131, 435 (1963)] to quantify the impact of eccentricity in the detection of single resolvable binaries in the pulsar timing array band. We present ready-to-use expressions to compute the increase/loss in signal-to-noise ratio of eccentric single resolvable sources whose dominant harmonic is located in the low/high frequency sensitivity reg…
A brief review is given of all the Hamiltonians and effective potentials calculated hitherto covering the post-Newtonian (pN) dynamics of a two body system. A method is presented to compare (conservative) reduced Hamiltonians with nonreduced potentials directly at least up to the next-to-leading-pN order.
While current gravitational wave observations with ground based detectors have been consistent with compact binaries in quasi-circular orbits, eccentric binaries may be detectable by ground-based and space-based instruments in the near future. Eccentricity significantly complicates the gravitational wave signal, and we currently lack fast and accurate models that are valid in the moderate to large eccentricity range. In a previous paper, we built a Fourier domain, eccentric waveform model at leading order in the post-Newtonian approximation, i.e. as an expansion in small velocities and weak fi…
The leading-order spin-orbit coupling is included in a post-Newtonian Lagrangian formulation of spinning compact binaries, which consists of the Newtonian term, first post-Newtonian (1PN) and 2PN non-spin terms and 2PN spin-spin coupling. This makes a 3PN spin-spin coupling occur in the derived Hamiltonian. The spin-spin couplings are mainly responsible for chaos in the Hamiltonians. However, the 3PN spin-spin Hamiltonian is small and has different signs, compared with the 2PN spin-spin Hamiltonian equivalent to the 2PN spin-spin Lagrangian. As a result, the probability of the occurrence of ch…
We calculate the eccentricity dependence of the high-order post-Newtonian (PN) expansion of the spin-precession invariant $ψ$ for eccentric-orbit extreme-mass-ratio inspirals with a Schwarzschild primary. The series is calculated in first-order black hole perturbation theory through direct analytic expansion of solutions in the Regge-Wheeler-Zerilli formalism, using a code written in \textsc{Mathematica}. Modes with small values of $l$ are found via the Mano-Suzuki-Takasugi (MST) analytic function expansion formalism for solutions to the Regge-Wheeler equation. Large-$l$ solutions are found by…
We study the secular, hierarchical three-body problem to first-order in a post-Newtonian expansion of General Relativity. We expand the first-order post-Newtonian Hamiltonian to leading-order in the ratio of the semi-major axis of the two orbits. In addition to the well-known terms that correspond to the GR precession of the inner and outer orbits, we find a new secular post-Newtonian interaction term that can affect the long-term evolution of the triple. We explore the parameter space for highly inclined and eccentric systems, where the Kozai-Lidov mechanism can produce large-amplitude oscill…
We derive from first principles third post-Newtonian (3PN) accurate Keplerian-type parametric solution to describe PN-accurate dynamics of non-spinning compact binaries in hyperbolic orbits. Orbital elements and functions of the parametric solution are obtained in terms of the conserved orbital energy and angular momentum in both Arnowitt-Deser-Misner type and modified harmonic coordinates. Elegant checks are provided that include a modified analytic continuation prescription to obtain our independent hyperbolic parametric solution from its eccentric version. A prescription to model gravitatio…
We present a prescription for computing gravitational waveforms for the inspiral, merger and ringdown of non-spinning eccentric binary black hole systems. The inspiral waveform is computed using the post-Newtonian expansion and the merger waveform is computed by interpolating a small number of quasi-circular NR waveforms. The use of circular merger waveforms is possible because eccentric binaries circularize in the last few cycles before the merger, which we demonstrate up to mass ratio $q = m_1/m_2 = 3$. The complete model is calibrated to 23 numerical relativity (NR) simulations starting ~20…
We analytically compute the gravitational self-force correction to the gyroscope precession along slightly eccentric equatorial orbits in the Kerr spacetime, generalizing previous results for the Schwarzschild spacetime. Our results are accurate through the 9.5 post-Newtonian order and to second order in both eccentricity and rotation parameter. We also provide a post-Newtonian check of our results based on the currently known Hamiltonian for spinning binaries.
We raise the analytical knowledge of the eccentricity-expansion of the Detweiler-Barack-Sago redshift invariant in a Schwarzschild spacetime up to the 9.5th post-Newtonian order (included) for the $e^2$ and $e^4$ contributions, and up to the 4th post-Newtonian order for the higher eccentricity contributions through $e^{20}$. We convert this information into an analytical knowledge of the effective-one-body radial potentials $\bar d(u)$, $ρ(u)$ and $q(u)$ through the 9.5th post-Newtonian order. We find that our analytical results are compatible with current corresponding numerical self-force da…
The article provides full-analytic gravitational wave (GW) forms for eccentric nonspinning compact binaries of arbitrary mass ratio in the time Fourier domain. The semi-analytical property of recent descriptions, i.e. the demand of inverting the higher-order Kepler equation numerically but keeping all other computations analytic, is avoided for the first time. The article is a completion of a previous one (Tessmer and Schäfer, Phys. Rev. D 82, 124064 (2010)) to second post-Newtonian (2PN) order in the harmonic GW amplitude and conservative orbital dynamics. A fully analytical inversion formula…
