We analyse an eleven-orbit inspiral of a non-spinning black-hole binary with mass ratio q=M1/M2=4. The numerically obtained gravitational waveforms are compared with post-Newtonian (PN) predictions including several sub-dominant multipoles up to multipolar indices (l=5,m=5). We find that (i) numerical and post-Newtonian predictions of the phase of the (2,2) mode accumulate a phase difference of about 0.35 rad at the PN cut off frequency 0.1 for the Taylor T1 approximant when numerical and PN waveforms are matched over a window in the early inspiral phase; (ii) in contrast to previous studies of equal-mass and specific spinning binaries, we find the Taylor T4 approximant to agree less well with numerical results, provided the latter are extrapolated to infinite extraction radius; (iii) extrapolation of gravitational waveforms to infinite extraction radius is particularly important for subdominant multipoles with l unequal m; (iv) 3PN terms in post-Newtonian multipole expansions significantly improve the agreement with numerical predictions for sub-dominant multipoles.
The paper generalizes the structure of gravitational waves from orbiting spinning binaries under leading order spin-orbit coupling, as given in the work by Königsdörffer and Gopakumar [PRD 71, 024039 (2005)] for single-spin and equal-mass binaries, to unequal-mass binaries and arbitrary spin configurations. The orbital motion is taken to be quasi-circular and the fractional mass difference is assumed to be small against one. The emitted gravitational waveforms are given in analytic form.
We derive the rate of change of the mean motion up to the second post-Newtonian order for inspiralling compact binaries with spin, mass quadrupole and magnetic dipole moments on eccentric orbits. We give this result in terms of orbital elements. We also present the related orbital phase for circular orbits.
We derive from first principles third post-Newtonian (3PN) accurate Keplerian-type parametric solution to describe PN-accurate dynamics of non-spinning compact binaries in hyperbolic orbits. Orbital elements and functions of the parametric solution are obtained in terms of the conserved orbital energy and angular momentum in both Arnowitt-Deser-Misner type and modified harmonic coordinates. Elegant checks are provided that include a modified analytic continuation prescription to obtain our independent hyperbolic parametric solution from its eccentric version. A prescription to model gravitatio…
The post-post-Newtonian (2PN) accurate mass quadrupole moment, for compact binaries of arbitrary mass ratio, moving in general orbits is obtained by the multi-polar post Minkowskian approach of Blanchet, Damour, and Iyer (BDI). Using this, for binaries in general orbits, the 2PN contributions to the gravitational waveform, and the associated far-zone energy and angular momentum fluxes are computed. For quasi-elliptic orbits, the energy and angular momentum fluxes are averaged over an orbital period, and employed to determine the 2PN corrections to the rate of decay of the orbital elements.
Using the canonical Arnowitt-Deser-Misner Hamiltonian formalism, a "first law of mechanics" is established for binary systems of point masses moving along generic stable bound (eccentric) orbits. This relationship is checked to hold within the post-Newtonian approximation to general relativity, up to third (3PN) order. Several applications are discussed, including the use of gravitational self-force results to inform post-Newtonian theory and the effective one-body model for eccentric-orbit compact binaries.
We study gravitational wave emission and the structure and formation of apparent horizons in orbiting black-hole binary systems in higher-dimensional general relativity. For this purpose we present an apparent horizon finder for use in higher dimensional numerical simulations and test the finder's accuracy and consistency in single and binary black-hole spacetimes. The black-hole binaries we model in $D=6$ dimensions complete up to about one orbit before merging or scatter off each other without formation of a common horizon. In agreement with the absence of stable circular geodesic orbits aro…
We present a prescription to compute the time-domain gravitational wave (GW) polarization states associated with spinning compact binaries inspiraling along quasi-circular orbits. We invoke the orbital angular momentum ${\bf L}$ rather than its Newtonian counterpart ${\bf L_{\rm N}}$ to describe the orbits and the two spin vectors are freely specified in the source frame associated with the initial direction of the total angular momentum. We discuss the various implications of our approach.
The second post-Newtonian (2PN) contribution to the `plus' and `cross' gravitational wave polarizations associated with gravitational radiation from non-spinning, compact binaries moving in elliptic orbits is computed. The computation starts from our earlier results on 2PN generation, crucially employs the 2PN accurate generalized quasi-Keplerian parametrization of elliptic orbits by Damour, Schäfer and Wex and provides 2PN accurate expressions modulo the tail terms for gravitational wave polarizations incorporating effects of eccentricity and periastron precession.
The angular momentum flux from an inspiralling binary system of compact objects moving in quasi-elliptical orbits is computed at the third post-Newtonian (3PN) order using the multipolar post-Minkowskian wave generation formalism. The 3PN angular momentum flux involves the instantaneous, tail, and tail-of-tails contributions as for the 3PN energy flux, and in addition a contribution due to non-linear memory. We average the angular momentum flux over the binary's orbit using the 3PN quasi-Keplerian representation of elliptical orbits. The averaged angular momentum flux provides the final input …
We probe the ability of various types of post-Newtonian(PN)-accurate circular templates to capture inspiral gravitational-wave (GW) signals from compact binaries having tiny orbital eccentricities. The GW signals are constructed by adapting the phasing formalism, available in T. Damour, A. Gopakumar, and B. R. Iyer, [Phys. Rev. D 70, 064028 (2004)], employing the orbital energy and the time-eccentricity to describe the orbital evolution. Using the fitting factor estimates, relevant for the initial LIGO, we show that circular templates, based on the adiabatic TaylorT1, complete adiabatic Taylor…
In this Comment we compute the contributions of the radiation reaction force in the 2.5 post-Newtonian (PN) gravitational wave polarizations for compact binaries in circular orbits. (i) We point out and correct an inconsistency in the derivation of Arun, Blanchet, Iyer, and Qusailah. (ii) We prove that all contributions from radiation reaction in the 2.5PN waveform are actually negligible since they can be absorbed into a modification of the orbital phase at the 5PN order.
We compute the non-linear memory contributions to the gravitational-wave amplitudes for compact binaries in eccentric orbits at the third post-Newtonian (3PN) order in general relativity. These contributions are hereditary in nature as they are sourced by gravitational waves emitted during the binary's entire dynamical past. Combining these with already available instantaneous and tail contributions we get the complete 3PN accurate gravitational waveform.
The imprint of non-linearities in the propagation of gravitational waves --- the tail effect --- is responsible for new spin contributions to the energy flux and orbital phasing of spinning black hole binaries. The spin-orbit (linear in spin) contribution to this effect is currently known at leading post-Newtonian order, namely 3PN for maximally spinning black holes on quasi-circular orbits. In the present work, we generalize these tail-originated spin-orbit terms to the next-to-leading 4PN order. This requires in particular extending previous results on the dynamical evolution of precessing c…
We derive a fully analytic Keplerian-type parametrization solution to conservative motion of spinning binary in ADM gauge. This solution is able to describe three dimensional motion of binaries of arbitrary eccentricity, mass ratio and initial configuration of spin angular momentum up to the leading order of post-Newtonian(PN) approximation and a linear order in spin. Based on our results waveforms can be quickly computed with high accuracy.
We derive Keplerian-type parametrization for the solution of post-Newtonian (PN) accurate conservative dynamics of spinning compact binaries moving in eccentric orbits. The PN accurate dynamics that we consider consists of the third post-Newtonian accurate conservative orbital dynamics influenced by the leading order spin effects, namely the leading order spin-orbit interactions. The orbital elements of the representation are explicitly given in terms of the conserved orbital energy, angular momentum and a quantity that characterizes the leading order spin-orbit interactions in Arnowitt, Deser…
We present Keplerian-type parametrization for the solution of third post-Newtonian (3PN) accurate equations of motion for two non-spinning compact objects moving in an eccentric orbit. The orbital elements of the parametrization are explicitly given in terms of the 3PN accurate conserved orbital energy and angular momentum in both Arnowitt, Deser, and Misner-type and harmonic coordinates. Our representation will be required to construct post-Newtonian accurate `ready to use' search templates for the detection of gravitational waves from compact binaries in inspiralling eccentric orbits. Due to…
The rotation of the bodies and the eccentricity of the orbit have significant effects on the emitted gravitational radiation of binary systems. This work focuses on the evaluation of the gravitational wave polarization states for spinning compact binaries. We consider binaries on eccentric orbits and the spin-orbit interaction up to the 1.5 post-Newtonian order in a way which is independent of the parameterization of the orbit. The equations of motion for angular variables are included. The formal expressions of the polarization states are given with the inclusion of higher order corrections t…
We present a prescription to compute the time-domain gravitational wave (GW) polarization states associated with spinning compact binaries inspiraling along quasi-circular orbits. We invoke the orbital angular momentum $\vek L$ rather than its Newtonian counterpart $\vek L_{\rm N}$ to describe the binary orbits while the two spin vectors are freely specified in an inertial frame associated with the initial direction of the total angular momentum. We show that the use of $\vek L$ to describe the orbits leads to additional 1.5PN order amplitude contributions to the two GW polarization states com…
We evolve isolated comparable mass spinning compact binaries experiencing Schnittman's post-Newtonian spin-orbit resonances in an inertial frame associated with $j_0$, the initial direction of the total angular momentum. We argue that accurate gravitational wave (GW) measurements of the initial orientations of the two spins and orbital angular momentum from $j_0$ should allow us to distinguish between the two possible families of spin-orbit resonances. Therefore, these measurements have the potential to provide direct observational evidence of possible binary formation scenarios. The above sta…
We compute the tail contributions to the gravitational-wave mode amplitudes for compact binaries in eccentric orbits at the third post-Newtonian order of general relativity. We combine them with the already available instantaneous pieces and include the post-adiabatic corrections required to fully account for the effects of radiation-reaction forces on the motion. We compare the resulting waveform in the small eccentricity limit to the circular one, finding perfect agreement.
In this work we present an analytical gravitational self-force calculation of the spin-orbit precession along an eccentric orbit around a Schwarzschild black hole, following closely the recent prescription of Akcay, Dempsey, and Dolan. We then transcribe this quantity within the Effective-One-Body (EOB) formalism, thereby determining several new, linear-in-mass-ratio, contributions in the post-Newtonian expansion of the spin-orbit couplings entering the EOB Hamiltonian. Namely, we determine the second gyro-gravitomagnetic ratio $g_{S_*}(r,p_r,p_ϕ)$ up to order $p_r^2/r^4$ included.
A generalized true anomaly-type parametrization, convenient to describe both bound and open orbits of a two-body system in general relativity is introduced. A complete description of the time evolution of both the radial and of the angular equations of a binary system taking into account the first order post-newtonian (1PN) is given. The gravitational radiation field emitted by the system is computed in the 1PN approximation including higher multipole moments beyond the standard quadrupole term. The gravitational waveforms in the time domain are explicitly given up to the 1PN order for unbound…
Using the Multipolar post-Minskowskian formalism, we compute the linear momentum flux from black-hole binaries in circular orbits and having no spins. The total linear momentum flux contains various types of instantaneous (which are functions of the retarded time) and hereditary (which depends on the dynamics of the binary in the past) terms both of which are analytically computed. In addition to the inspiral contribution, we use a simple model of plunge to compute the kick or recoil accumulated during this phase.
Compact binaries inspiralling along eccentric orbits are plausible gravitational wave (GW) sources for the ground-based laser interferometers. We explore the losses in the event rates incurred when searching for GWs from compact binaries inspiralling along post-Newtonian accurate eccentric orbits with certain obvious non-optimal search templates. For the present analysis, GW signals having 2.5 post-Newtonian accurate orbital evolution are modeled following the phasing formalism, presented in [T. Damour, A. Gopakumar, and B. R. Iyer, Phys. Rev. D \textbf{70}, 064028 (2004)]. We demonstrate that…
We derive analytic expressions that provide Fourier domain gravitational wave (GW) response function for compact binaries inspiraling along moderately eccentric orbits. These expressions include amplitude corrections to the two GW polarization states that are accurate to the first post-Newtonian (PN) order. Additionally, our fully 3PN accurate GW phase evolution incorporates eccentricity effects up to sixth order at each PN order. Further, we develop a prescription to incorporate analytically the effects of 3PN accurate periastron advance in the GW phase evolution. This is how we provide a rea…
We extend our previous work devoted to the computation of the next-to-next-to-leading order spin-orbit correction (corresponding to 3.5PN order) in the equations of motion of spinning compact binaries, by: (i) Deriving the corresponding spin-orbit terms in the evolution equations for the spins, the conserved integrals of the motion and the metric regularized at the location of the particles (obtaining also the metric all-over the near zone but with some lower precision); (ii) Performing the orbital reduction of the precession equations, near-zone metric and conserved integrals to the center- o…
One of the promising sources of gravitational radiation is a binary system composed of compact stars. It is an important question how the rotation of the bodies and the eccentricity of the orbit affect the detectable signal. Here we present a method to evaluate the gravitational wave polarization states for inspiralling compact binaries with comparable mass. We consider eccentric orbits and the spin-orbit contribution in the case of one spinning object up to 1.5 post-Newtonian order. For circular orbits our results are in agreement with existing calculations.
The conservative dephasing effects of gravitational self forces for extreme mass-ratio inspirals are studied. Both secular and non-secular conservative effects may have a significant effect on LISA waveforms that is independent of the mass ratio of the system. Such effects need to be included in generated waveforms to allow for accurate gravitational wave astronomy that requires integration times as long as a year.
Based on the secular spin evolution of black holes, neutron stars, gravastars, or boson stars in precessing compact binaries on eccentric orbit, we identify the aligned and more generic coplanar configurations of the spins and orbital angular momentum as fix points. Through a dynamical system analysis, we investigate their linear stability as function of the mass quadrupole parameter. Marginal stability holds for the binary configurations with both spins antialigned to the orbital angular momentum, for both spins aligned to the orbital angular momentum (with the exception of certain quadrupola…
Inspiraling compact binaries with non-negligible orbital eccentricities are plausible gravitational wave (GW) sources for the upcoming network of GW observatories. In this paper, we present two prescriptions to compute post-Newtonian (PN) accurate inspiral templates for such binaries. First, we adapt and extend the post-circular scheme of Yunes {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. D 80, 084001 (2009)] to obtain a Fourier-domain inspiral approximant that incorporates the effects of PN-accurate orbital eccentricity evolution. This results in a fully analytic frequency-domain inspiral waveform with Newtonian…
Compact binaries inspiralling along quasi-circular orbits are the most plausible gravitational wave (GW) sources for the operational, planned and proposed laser interferometers. We provide new class of restricted post-Newtonian accurate GW templates for non-spinning compact binaries inspiralling along PN accurate quasi-circular orbits. Arguments based on data analysis, theoretical and astrophysical considerations are invoked to show why these time-domain Taylor approximants should be interesting to various GW data analysis communities.
We formally show that the conservative second post-Newtonian (PN) accurate dynamics of spinning compact binaries moving in eccentric orbits, when spin effects are restricted to the leading order spin-orbit interaction cannot be chaotic for the following two distinct cases: (i) the binary consists of compact objects of arbitrary mass, where only one of them is spinning with an arbitrary spin and (ii) the binary consists of equal mass compact objects, having two arbitrary spins. We rest our arguments on the recent determination of PN accurate Keplerian-type parametric solutions to the above case…
The equations of motion for spinning compact binaries on eccentric orbits are treated perturbatively in powers of a fractional mass-difference ordering parameter. The solution is valid through first order in the mass-difference parameter. A canonical point transformation removes the leading order terms of the spin-orbit Hamiltonian which induce a wiggling precession of the orbital angular momentum around the conserved total angular momentum, a precession which disappears in the case of equal masses or one single spin. Action-angle variables are applied which make a canonical perturbation theor…
We compare results from numerical simulations of spinning binaries in the "orbital hangup" case, where the binary completes at least nine orbits before merger, with post-Newtonian results using the approximants TaylorT1, T4 and Et. We find that, over the ten cycles before the gravitational-wave frequency reaches $Mω= 0.1$, the accumulated phase disagreement between NR and 2.5PN results is less than three radians, and is less than 2.5 radians when using 3.5PN results. The amplitude disagreement between NR and restricted PN results increases with the black holes' spin, from about 6% in the equal…
Individual supermassive black hole binaries in non-circular orbits are possible nanohertz gravitational wave sources for the rapidly maturing Pulsar Timing Array experiments. We develop an accurate and efficient approach to compute Pulsar Timing Array signals due to gravitational waves from inspiraling supermassive black hole binaries in relativistic eccentric orbits. Our approach employs a Keplerian-type parametric solution to model third post-Newtonian accurate precessing eccentric orbits while a novel semi-analytic prescription is provided to model the effects of quadrupolar order gravitati…
Compact binaries in hyperbolic orbits are plausible gravitational wave (GW) sources for the upcoming and planned GW observatories. We develop an efficient prescription to compute post-Newtonian (PN) accurate ready-to-use GW polarization states for spinning compact binaries, influenced by the dominant order spin-orbit interactions, in hyperbolic orbits. This is achieved by invoking the 1.5PN accurate quasi-Keplerian parameterization for the radial sector of the orbital dynamics. We probe the influences of spins and gravitational radiation reaction on $h_+$ and $h_{\times}$ during the hyperbolic…
We compute here the spin-orbit and spin-spin couplings needed for an accurate computation of the phasing of gravitational waves emitted by comparable-mass binaries on eccentric orbits at the second post-Newtonian (PN) order. We use a quasi-Keplerian parametrization of the orbit free of divergencies in the zero eccentricity limit. We find that spin-spin couplings induce a residual eccentricity for coalescing binaries at 2PN, of the order of $10^{-4}$-$10^{-3}$ for supermassive black hole binaries in the LISA band. Spin-orbit precession also induces a non-trivial pattern in the evolution of the …
Newtonian point mass binaries can be brought into arbitrarily close circular orbits. Neutron stars and black holes, however, are extended, relativistic objects. Both finite size and relativistic effects make very close orbits unstable, so that there exists an innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO). We illustrate the physics of the ISCO in a simple model problem, and review different techniques which have been employed to locate the ISCO in black hole and neutron star binaries. We discuss different assumptions and approximations, and speculate on how differences in the results may be explained …
A compact binary in an eccentric orbit radiates gravitational waves (GWs) at all integer harmonics of its orbital frequency. In this study, we investigate the effect of orbital eccentricity on the expected gravitational background radiation (GWBR) from supermassive black hole (SMBH) binaries in the nuclei of galaxies. For this purpose, we formulate a power spectrum of the GWBR from cosmological evolving eccentric binaries. Then, we apply this formulation to the case of the GWBR from SMBH binaries. The key to doing this is to correctly estimate the number density of coalescing SMBH binaries. In…
We present the first fully-nonlinear numerical study of the dynamics of highly spinning black-hole binaries. We evolve binaries from quasicircular orbits (as inferred from Post-Newtonian theory), and find that the last stages of the orbital motion of black-hole binaries are profoundly affected by their individual spins. In order to cleanly display its effects, we consider two equal mass holes with individual spin parameters S/m^2=0.757, both aligned and anti-aligned with the orbital angular momentum (and compare with the spinless case), and with an initial orbital period of 125M. We find that …
A quasi-Keplerian parameterisation for the solutions of second post-Newtonian (PN) accurate equations of motion for spinning compact binaries is obtained including leading order spin-spin and next-to-leading order spin-orbit interactions. Rotational deformation of the compact objects is incorporated. For arbitrary mass ratios the spin orientations are taken to be parallel or anti-parallel to the orbital angular momentum vector. The emitted gravitational wave forms are given in analytic form up to 2PN point particle, 1.5PN spin orbit and 1PN spin-spin contributions, where the spins are counted …
The LISA (Laser Interferometer Space Antenna) mission will observe in the low frequency band from 0.1 mHz to 1 Hz. In this regime, we expect the galactic binaries to be the dominant (by number) sources of gravitational waves signal. Considering that galactic binaries are composed of the most magnetized astrophysical objects in the universe (i.e., the white dwarfs and the neutron stars), LISA is expected to bring new informations about the origin and the nature of magnetism inside degenerated stars. Currently, the data processing assumes that the galactic binary systems are non-magnetic and in …
We present a new algorithm for evolving orbiting black-hole binaries that does not require excision or a corotating shift. Our algorithm is based on a novel technique to handle the singular puncture conformal factor. This system, based on the BSSN formulation of Einstein's equations, when used with a `pre-collapsed' initial lapse, is non-singular at the start of the evolution, and remains non-singular and stable provided that a good choice is made for the gauge. As a test case, we use this technique to fully evolve orbiting black-hole binaries from near the Innermost Stable Circular Orbit (ISC…
Spin--orbit misalignment in coalescing compact binaries affects their gravitational radiation waveforms. When the misalignment angles are large (>30 degrees), the detection efficiency of the coalescence events can decrease significantly if the misalignment effects are not modeled. In this paper, we consider the formation of close compact binaries and calculate the expected misalignment angles after the second core collapse event. Depending on the progenitor parameters and the assumptions made about supernova kicks, we find that 30 to 80 per cent of binaries containing a black hole and a neutro…
We develop a method to compute low-eccentricity initial data of black hole--neutron star binaries in the puncture framework extending previous work on other types of compact binaries. In addition to adjusting the orbital angular velocity of the binary, the approaching velocity of a neutron star is incorporated by modifying the helical Killing vector used to derive equations of the hydrostationary equilibrium. The approaching velocity of the black hole is then induced by requiring the vanishing of the total linear momentum of the system, differently from the case of binary black holes in the pu…
We present a new numerical scheme for solving the initial value problem for quasiequilibrium binary neutron stars allowing for arbitrary spins. We construct sequences of circular-orbit binaries of varying separation, keeping the rest mass and circulation constant along each sequence. The spin angular frequency of the stars is shown to vary along the sequence, a result that can be derived analytically in the PPN limit. This spin effect, in addition to leaving an imprint on the gravitational waveform emitted during binary inspiral, is measurable in the electromagnetic signal if one of the stars …
Zoom-whirl behavior has the reputation of being a rare phenomenon. The concern has been that gravitational radiation would drain angular momentum so rapidly that generic orbits would circularize before zoom-whirl behavior could play out, and only rare highly tuned orbits would retain their imprint. Using full numerical relativity, we catch zoom-whirl behavior despite dissipation. The larger the mass ratio, the longer the pair can spend in orbit before merging and therefore the more zooms and whirls seen. Larger spins also enhance zoom-whirliness. An important implication is that these eccentri…
We study how the neutron-star equation of state affects the onset of the dynamical instability in the equations of motion for inspiraling neutron-star binaries near coalescence. A combination of relativistic effects and Newtonian tidal effects cause the stars to begin their final, rapid, and dynamically-unstable plunge to merger when the stars are still well separated and the orbital frequency is $\approx$ 500 cycles/sec (i.e. the gravitational wave frequency is approximately 1000 Hz). The orbital frequency at which the dynamical instability occurs (i.e. the orbital frequency at the innermost …
We present a recently developed prescription to obtain ready-to-use gravitational wave (GW) polarization states for spinning compact binaries on hyperbolic orbits. We include leading order spin-orbit interactions, invoking 1.5PN-accurate quasi-Keplerian parametrization for the radial part of the orbital dynamics. We also include radiation reaction effects on $h_+$ and $h_{\times}$ during the interaction. In the GW signals from spinning binaries there is evidence of the memory effect in both polarizations, in contrast to the non-spinning case, where only the cross polarizations exhibits non-van…
Black holes binaries support unstable orbits at very close separations. In the simplest case of geodesics around a Schwarzschild black hole the orbits, though unstable, are regular. Under perturbation the unstable orbits can become the locus of chaos. All unstable orbits, whether regular or chaotic, can be quantified by their Lyapunov exponents. The exponents are observationally relevant since the phase of gravitational waves can decohere in a Lyapunov time. If the timescale for dissipation due to gravitational waves is shorter than the Lyapunov time, chaos will be damped and essentially unobs…
Several scenarios have been proposed in which the orbits of binary black holes enter the band of a gravitational wave detector with significant eccentricity. To avoid missing these signals or biasing parameter estimation it is important that we consider waveform models that account for eccentricity. The ingredients needed to compute post-Newtonian (PN) waveforms produced by spinning black holes inspiralling on quasi-eccentric orbits have been available for almost two decades at 2 PN order, and this work has recently been extended to 2.5 PN order. However, the computational cost of directly imp…
We perform numerical simulations of black-hole binaries to study the exchange of spin and orbital angular momentum during the last, highly nonlinear, stages of the coalescence process. To calculate the transfer of angular momentum from orbital to spin, we start with two quasi-circular configurations, one with initially non-spinning black holes, the other with corotating black holes. In both cases the binaries complete almost two orbits before merging. We find that, during these last orbits, the specific spin (a/m) of each horizon increases by only 0.012 for the initially non-spinning configura…
We present new numerical-relativity simulations of eccentric merging black holes with initially antiparallel spins lying in the orbital plane (the so-called \emph{superkick} configuration). Binary eccentricity boosts the recoil of the merger remnant by up to $25\%$. The increase in the energy flux is much more modest, and therefore this kick enhancement is mainly due to asymmetry in the binary dynamics. Our findings might have important consequences for the retention of stellar-mass black holes in star clusters and supermassive black holes in galactic hosts.
The stability of binary orbits can significantly shape the gravity wave signal which future Earth-based interferometers hope to detect. The inner most stable circular orbit has been of interest as it marks the transition from the late inspiral to final plunge. We consider purely relativistic orbits beyond the circular assumption. Homoclinic orbits are of particular importance to the question of stability as they lie on the boundary between dynamical stability and instability. We identify these, estimate their rate of energy loss to gravity waves, and compute their gravitational waveforms.
Given the absence of observations of black hole binaries, it is critical that the full range of accessible parameter space be explored in anticipation of future observation with gravitational wave detectors. To this end, we compile the Hamiltonian equations of motion describing the conservative dynamics of the most general black hole binaries, as computed by Will and collaborators, and incorporate an effective treatment of dissipation through gravitational radiation. We evolve these equations for systems with orbital eccentricity and precessing spins. We find that, while spin-spin coupling cor…
We derive the equations of motion of dyonic black hole binaries with electric and magnetic charges and explore features of static orbits. By using a Newtonian method with the inclusion of radiation reaction, we calculate the total emission rate of energy and angular momentum due to gravitational radiation and electromagnetic radiation for circular orbits. Moreover, we obtain the evolutions of orbits and calculate merger times of dyonic binaries. We show that electric and magnetic charges significantly suppress the merger times of dyonic binaries. Our results provide rich information about dyon…
Merging compact black-hole (BH) binaries are likely to exist in the nuclear star clusters around supermassive BHs (SMBHs), such as Sgr A$^\ast$. They may also form in the accretion disks of active galactic nuclei. Such compact binaries can emit gravitational waves (GWs) in the low-frequency band (0.001-1 Hz) that are detectable by several planned space-borne GW observatories. We show that the orbital axis of the compact binary may experience significant variation due to the frame-dragging effect associated with the spin of the SMBH. The dynamical behavior of the orbital axis can be understood …
We revisit the scenario of the gravitational radiation recoil acquired by the final remnant of a black-hole-binary merger by studying a set of configurations that have components of the spin both aligned with the orbital angular momentum and in the orbital plane. We perform a series of 42 new full numerical simulations for equal-mass and equal-spin-magnitude binaries. We extend previous recoil fitting formulas to include nonlinear terms in the spins and successfully include both the new and known results. The new predicted maximum velocity approaches 5000km/s for spins partially aligned with t…
Using effective field theory (EFT) techniques we calculate the next-to-leading order (NLO) spin-orbit contributions to the gravitational potential of inspiralling compact binaries. We use the covariant spin supplementarity condition (SSC), and explicitly prove the equivalence with previous results by Faye et al. in arXiv:gr-qc/0605139. We also show that the direct application of the Newton-Wigner SSC at the level of the action leads to the correct dynamics using a canonical (Dirac) algebra. This paper then completes the calculation of the necessary spin dynamics within the EFT formalism that w…
