In this article, we prove that there is a canonical Verdier self-dual intersection space sheaf complex for the middle perversity on Witt spaces that admit compatible trivializations for their link bundles, for example toric varieties. If the space is an algebraic variety our construction takes place in the category of mixed Hodge modules. We obtain an intersection space cohomology theory, satisfying Poincaré duality, valid for a class of pseudomanifolds with arbitrary depth stratifications. The main new ingredient is the category of Künneth complexes; these are cohomologically constructible complexes with respect to a fixed stratification, together with additional data, which codifies triviality structures along the strata. In analogy to what Goreski and McPherson showed for intersection homology complexes, we prove that there are unique Künneth complexes that satisfy the axioms for intersection space complexes introduced by the first and third author. This uniqueness implies the duality statements in the same scheme as in Goreski and McPherson theory.
We present an obstruction theoretic inductive construction of intersection space pairs, which generalizes Banagl's construction of intersection spaces for arbitrary depth stratifications. We construct intersection space pairs for pseudomanifolds with compatible trivial structures at the link fibrations; this includes the case of toric varieties. We define intersection space complexes in an axiomatic way, similar to Goresky-McPherson axioms for intersection cohomology. We prove that if the intersection space exists, then the pseudomanifold has an intersection space complex whose hypercohomology…
We describe the intersection complex of any perversity of a toric variety completely in terms of the associated fan. It is described by a finite complex of finite dimensional graded vector spaces which we call graded exterior modules. The intersection complexes of the middle perversity are treated in the second part following this article.
In the previous paper, we describe the intersection complexes of a toric variety as a finite complex of graded exterior modules on the associated fan. In this second part, we rewrite it explicitly by the barycentric subdivision of the fan. We get the decomposition theorem of the intersection homologies for a barycentric subdivision of a fan in the case of middle perversity. We get also the diagonal theorems I and II. These theorems give a new proof of the g-comnjecture on a simplicial polytope which was proved by R. Stanley.
Let $f : X \longrightarrow Y$ be a proper and local complete intersection morphism of schemes. We prove that $\mathbb{R}f_{*}$ preserves perfect complexes, without any projectivity or noetherian assumptions. This provides a different proof of a theorem by Neeman and Lipman based on techniques from derived algebraic geometry to proceed a reduction to the noetherian case.
We prove the structure theorem of the intersection complexes of toric varieties in the category of mixed Hodge modules. This theorem is due to Bernstein, Khovanskii and MacPherson for the underlying complexes with rational coefficients. As a corollary the Euler characteristic Hodge numbers of non-degenerate toric hypersurface can be determined by the Euler characteristic subtotal Hodge numbers together with combinatorial data of Newton polyhedra. This is used implicitly in an explicit formula by Batyrev--Borisov. Note that a formula for the Euler characteristic subtotal Hodge numbers in terms …
We establish a positive characteristic analogue of intersection cohomology theory for variations of Hodge structure. It includes: a) the de Rham-Higgs comparison theorem for the intersection de Rham complex; b) the $E_1$-degeneration theorem for the intersection de Rham complex of a periodic de Rham bundle; c) the Kodaira-Saito vanishing theorem for the intersection cohomology groups of a periodic Higgs bundle. These results generalize the decomposition theorem of Deligne-Illusie and the de Rham-Higgs theorem of Ogus-Vologodsky, the $E_1$-degneration theorem of Deligne-Illusie, Illusie, Faltin…
We obtain a linear algebra data presentation of the category of constructible with respect to perverse triangulation sheaves on a finite simplicial complex. We also establish Koszul duality between the above mentioned category and the category of perverse sheaves constructible with respect to the triangulation
We present a combinatorial procedure (based on the W-graph of the Coxeter group) which shows that the characters of many intersection cohomology complexes on low rank complex flag varieties with coefficients in an arbitrary field are given by Kazhdan-Lusztig basis elements. Our procedure exploits the existence and uniqueness of parity sheaves. In particular we are able to show that the characters of all intersection cohomology complexes with coefficients in a field on the flag variety of type A_n for n < 7 are given by Kazhdan-Lusztig basis elements. By results of Soergel, this implies a part …
In this work, we calculate the trace of a Hecke correspondance composed with a power of the Frobenius endomorphism on the fibre of the intersection complexes of the Baily-Borel compactification of a Siegel modular variety. Our main tool is Pink's theorem about the restriction to the strata of the Baily-Borel compactification of the direct image of a local system on the Shimura variety. To use this theorem, we give a new construction of the intermediate extension of a pure perverse sheaf as a weight truncation of the full direct image. More generally, we are able to define analogs in positive c…
In this work, we calculate the trace of a power of the Frobenius endomorphism on the fibers of the intersection complex of the Baily-Borel compactification of a Shimura variety associated to a unitary group over Q. Our main tool is Pink's theorem about the restriction to the strata of the Baily-Borel compactification of the direct image of a local system on the Shimura variety. To use this theorem, we give a new construction of the intermediate extension of a pure perverse sheaf as a weight truncated of the full direct image. More generally, we are able to define analogs in positive characteri…
Given a collection of boundary divisors in the moduli space of stable genus-zero n-pointed curves, Giansiracusa proved that their intersection is nonempty if and only if all pairwise intersections are nonempty. We give a complete classification of the pairs (g,n) for which the analogous statement holds in the moduli space of n-pointed curves of genus g.
We discover that tautological intersection numbers on $\bar{\mathcal{M}}_{g, n}$, the moduli space of stable genus $g$ curves with $n$ marked points, are evaluations of Ehrhart polynomials of partial polytopal complexes. In order to prove this, we realize the Virasoro constraints for tautological intersection numbers as a recursion for integer-valued polynomials. Then we apply a theorem of Breuer that classifies Ehrhart polynomials of partial polytopal complexes by the nonnegativity of their $f^*$-vector. In dimensions 1 and 2, we show that the polytopal complexes that arise are \emph{inside-o…
The method of intersection spaces associates cell-complexes depending on a perversity to certain types of stratified pseudomanifolds in such a way that Poincaré duality holds between the ordinary rational cohomology groups of the cell-complexes associated to complementary perversities. The cohomology of these intersection spaces defines a cohomology theory HI for singular spaces, which is not isomorphic to intersection cohomology IH. Mirror symmetry tends to interchange IH and HI. The theory IH can be tied to type IIA string theory, while HI can be tied to IIB theory. For pseudomanifolds with …
We introduce tropical complexes, as an enrichment of the dual complex of a degeneration with additional data from non-transverse intersection numbers. We define cycles, divisors, and linear equivalence on tropical complexes, analogous both to the corresponding theories on algebraic varieties and to previous work on graphs and abstract tropical curves. In addition, we establish conditions for the divisor-curve intersection numbers on a tropical complex to agree with the generic fiber of a degeneration.
We establish several strengthened versions of Lurie's Tannaka duality theorem for certain classes of spectral algebraic stacks. Our most general version of Tannaka duality identifies maps between stacks with exact symmetric monoidal functors between $\infty$-categories of quasi-coherent complexes which preserve connective and pseudo-coherent complexes.
We show how to equip the cone complexes of toroidal embeddings with additional structure that allows to define a balancing condition for weighted subcomplexes. We then proceed to develop the foundations of an intersection theory on cone complexes including push-forwards, intersections with tropical divisors, and rational equivalence. These constructions are shown to have an algebraic interpretation: Ulirsch's tropicalizations of subvarieties of toroidal embeddings carry natural multiplicities making them tropical cycles, and the induced tropicalization map for cycles respects push-forwards, in…
In this article, we construct the Hitchin fibration for groups following the scheme outlined by Frenkel-Ngo in the case of SL_{2}. This construction uses as a decisive tool the Vinberg's semigroup. The total space of Hitchin is obtained by taking the fiber product of the Hecke stack with the diagonal of the stack of G-bundles $Bun_{G}$; we prove a transversality statement between the intersection complex of the Hecke stack and the diagonal of $Bun_{G}$, over a sufficiently big open subset, in order to get local applications, such that the fundamental lemma for the spherical Hecke algebra. Alon…
We show that every exact fully faithful functor from the category of perfect complexes on the spectrum of dual numbers to the bounded derived category of a noetherian separated scheme is of Fourier-Mukai type. The kernel turns out to be an object of the bounded derived category of coherent complexes on the product of the two schemes. We also study the space of stability conditions on the derived category of the spectrum of dual numbers.
We study an obstruction to prescribing the dual complex of a strict semistable degeneration of an algebraic surface. In particular, we show that if $Δ$ is a complex homeomorphic to a 2-dimensional manifold with negative Euler characteristic, then $Δ$ is not the dual complex of any semistable degeneration. In fact, our theorem is somewhat more general and applies to some complexes homotopy equivalent to such a manifold. Our obstruction is provided by the theory of tropical complexes.
We propose the new construction of complex surfaces with $h^{1,0} = h^{2,0} = 0$ from smoothings of normal crossing surfaces with non-collapsible dual complexes and carry it out for the simplest case of the duncehat complex, obtaining the surface with $h^{1,1} = 9$ (presumably Barlow surface).
If K is a number field, arithmetic duality theorems for tori and complexes of tori over K are crucial to understand local-global principles for linear algebraic groups over K. When K is a global field of positive characteristic, we prove similar arithmetic duality theorems, including a Poitou-Tate exact sequence for Galois hypercohomology of complexes of tori. One of the main ingredients is Artin-Mazur-Milne duality theorem for fppf cohomology of finite flat commutative group schemes.
Let X be an affine spherical variety, possibly singular, and $L^+X$ its arc space. The intersection complex of $L^+X$, or rather of its finite-dimensional formal models, is conjectured to be related to special values of local unramified L-functions. Such relationships were previously established in Braverman-Finkelberg-Gaitsgory-Mirkovic for the affine closure of the quotient of a reductive group by the unipotent radical of a parabolic, and in Bouthier-Ngo-Sakellaridis for toric varieties and L-monoids. In this paper, we compute this intersection complex for the large class of those spherical …
The object of the paper is the dependence of Koszul complexes and dependence of dual Koszul complexes of two systems of non-homogeneous polynomials, when one system is a part of other system, in connection with the duality in a Koszul complex established by author earlier. Whence, the dependence of Koszul complexes and dependence of dual Koszul complexes follow when one system is linearly expressed through other system. Obtaned results are used in the proof of homotopic equivalence, formulated earlier by the author, of the Koszul complex and dual Koszul complex of a system of non-homogeneous p…
Let C be a semidualizing complex over a noetherian local ring A. If there exists a local homomorphism with source A satisfying some homological properties, then C is dualizing.
We use the anti-equivalence between Cohen-Macaulay complexes and coherent sheaves on formal schemes to shed light on some older results and prove new results. We bring out the relations between a coherent sheaf M satisfying an S_2 condition and the lowest cohomology N of its "dual" complex. We show that if a scheme has a Gorenstein complex satisfying certain coherence conditions, then in a finite étale neighborhood of each point, it has a dualizing complex. If the scheme already has a dualizing complex, then we show that the Gorenstein complex must be a tensor product of a dualizing complex an…
In this paper we present a new approach to Grothendieck duality over commutative rings. Our approach is based on the idea of rigid dualizing complexes, which was introduced by Van den Bergh in the context of noncommutative algebraic geometry. The method of rigidity was modified to work over general commutative base rings in our paper [YZ5]. In the present paper we obtain many of the important local features of Grothendieck duality, yet manage to avoid lengthy and difficult compatibility verifications. Our results apply to essentially finite type algebras over a regular noetherian finite dimens…
We study the dual complexes of boundary divisors in log resolutions of compactifications of algebraic varieties and show that the homotopy types of these complexes are independent of all choices. Inspired by recent developments in nonarchimedean geometry, we consider relations between these boundary complexes and weight filtrations on singular cohomology and cohomology with compact supports, and give applications to dual complexes of resolutions of isolated singularities that generalize results of Stepanov and Thuillier.
We relate the variance theory for Cousin complexes -^# developed by Lipman, Nayak and the author to Grothendieck duality for Cousin complexes. Specifically for a Cousin complex F on (Y, Δ)--with Δa codimension function on a formal scheme Y (noetherian, universally catenary)--and a pseudo-finite type map f:(X,Δ') --> (Y,Δ) of such pairs of schemes with codimension functions, we show there is a derived category map γ^!_f(F):f^#F --> f^!F, which is functorial as F varies over Cousin complexes on (Y,Δ), and induces an isomorphism f^#F = E(f^#F) --> E(f^!F). E here is the Cousin functor for the cod…
In this paper we present a new approach to Grothendieck duality on schemes. Our approach is based on the idea of rigid dualizing complexes, which was introduced by Van den Bergh in the context of noncommutative algebraic geometry. We obtain most of the important features of Grothendieck duality, yet manage to avoid lengthy and difficult compatibility verifications. Our results apply to finite type schemes over a regular noetherian finite dimensional base ring, and hence are suitable for arithmetic geometry.
There is a strange duality between the quadrangle isolated complete intersection singularities discovered by the first author and C.T.C.Wall. We derive this duality from the mirror symmetry, the Berglund-Hübsch transposition of invertible polynomials, and our previous results about the strange duality between hypersurface and complete intersection singularities using matrix factorizations of size two.
We show that Bloch's complex of relative zero-cycles can be used as a dualizing complex over perfect fields and number rings. This leads to duality theorems for torsion sheaves on arbitrary separated schemes of finite type over algebraically closed fields, finite fields, local fields of mixed characteristic, and rings of integers in number rings, generalizing results which so far have only been known for smooth schemes or in low dimensions, and unify the p-adic and l-adic theory. As an application, we generalize Rojtman's theorem to normal, projective schemes.
C.T.C. Wall and the first author discovered an extension of Arnold's strange duality embracing on one hand series of bimodal hypersurface singularities and on the other, isolated complete intersection singularities. In this paper, we derive this duality from the mirror symmetry and the Berglund-Hübsch transposition of invertible polynomials.
We describe dualities and complexes of logarithmic forms and differentials for central affine and corresponding projective arrangements. We generalize the Borel-Serre formula from vector bundles to sheaves on projective d-space with locally free resolutions of length one. Combining these results we present a generalization of a formula due to Mustata and Schenck, relating the Poincare polynomial of an arrangement in projective 3-space (or a locally tame arrangement in projective d-space with zero-dimensional non-free locus) to the total Chern polynomial of its sheaf of logarithmic 1-forms.
Let $\mathbf{M}_n$ be the Simpson compactification of twisted ideal sheaves $\mathcal{I}_{L,Q}(1)$ where $Q$ is a rank $4$ quardric hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}^n$ and $L$ is a linear subspace of dimension $n-2$. This paper calculates the intersection Poincaré polynomial of $\mathbf{M}_n$ using Kirwan's desingularization method. We obtain the intersection Poincaré polynomial of the moduli space for one-dimensional sheaves on del Pezzo surfaces of degree $\geq 8$ by considering wall-crossings of stable pairs and complexes.
We present a robust categorical foundation for the duality theory introduced by Eisenbud and Schreyer to prove the Boij-Söderberg conjectures describing numerical invariants of syzygies. The new foundation allows us to extend the reach of the theory substantially. More explicitly, we construct a pairing between derived categories that simultaneously categorifies all the functionals used by Eisenbud and Schreyer. With this new tool, we describe the cone of Betti tables of finite, minimal free complexes having homology modules of specified dimensions over a polynomial ring, and we treat many exa…
We construct a canonical pseudofunctor ^# on the category of finite-type maps of (say) connected noetherian universally catenary finite-dimensional separated schemes, taking values in the category of Cousin complexes. This pseudofunctor is a concrete approximation to the restriction of the Grothendieck Duality pseudofunctor ^! to the full subcategory of the derived category having Cohen-Macaulay complexes as objects (a subcategory equivalent to the category of Cousin complexes, once a codimension function has been fixed). Specifically, for Cousin complexes M and any scheme map f:X -> Y as abov…
On a suitable category of formal schemes equipped with codimension functions we construct a canonical pseudofunctor (-)^# taking values in the corresponding categories of Cousin complexes. Cousin complexes on such a formal scheme X functorially represent derived-category objects F by the local cohomologies H_x^{codim(x)}(F) (x \in X) together with "residue maps" from the cohomology at x to that at each immediate specialization of x; this representation is faithful when restricted to F which are Cohen-Macaulay (CM), i.e., H_x^i(F)=0 unless i=codim(x). Formal schemes provide a framework for trea…
In this article we improve the upper bound for the arithmetic self-intersection number of the dualizing sheaf of the minimal regular model for the Fermat curves $F_p$ of prime exponent.
We show that every complete intersection of Laurent polynomials in an algebraic torus is isomorphic to a complete intersection of master functions in the complement of a hyperplane arrangement, and vice versa. We call this association Gale duality because the exponents of the monomials in the polynomials annihilate the weights of the master functions. We use Gale duality to give a Kouchnirenko theorem for the number of solutions to a system of master functions and to compute some topological invariants of generic master function complete intersections.
We study the arithmetic self-intersection number of the dualizing sheaf on arithmetic surfaces with respect to morphisms of a particular kind. We obtain upper bounds for the arithmetic self-intersection number of the dualizing sheaf on minimal regular models of the modular curves associated with congruence subgroups $Γ_0(N)$ with square free level, as well as for the modular curves X(N) and the Fermat curves with prime exponent.
Paper has been accepted for publication in the Journal für die reine und Angewandte Mathematik. This version contains the corrections and additional references made in the Galley proofs.
We prove that there is a map from Bloch's cycle complex to Kato's complex of Milnor K-theory, which induces a quasi-isomorphism from étale sheafified cycle complex to the Gersten complex of logarithmic de Rham--Witt sheaves. Next we show that the truncation of Bloch's cycle complex at -3 is quasi-isomorphic to Spiess' dualizing complex.
For any Kac-Moody group $G$ with Borel $B$, we give a monoidal equivalence between the derived category of $B$-equivariant mixed complexes on the flag variety $G/B$ and (a certain completion of) the derived category of $B^\vee$-monodromic mixed complexes on the enhanced flag variety $G^\vee/U^\vee$, here $G^\vee$ is the Langlands dual of $G$. We also prove variants of this equivalence, one of which is the equivalence between the derived category of $U$-equivariant mixed complexes on the partial flag variety $G/P$ and certain "Whittaker model" category of mixed complexes on $G^\vee/B^\vee$. In …
We formulate a strong positivity conjecture on characters afforded by the Alvis-Curtis dual of the intersection cohomology of Deligne-Lusztig varieties. This conjecture provides a powerful tool to determine decomposition numbers of unipotent $\ell$-blocks of finite reductive groups.
