We relate the variance theory for Cousin complexes -^# developed by Lipman, Nayak and the author to Grothendieck duality for Cousin complexes. Specifically for a Cousin complex F on (Y, Δ)--with Δa codimension function on a formal scheme Y (noetherian, universally catenary)--and a pseudo-finite type map f:(X,Δ') --> (Y,Δ) of such pairs of schemes with codimension functions, we show there is a derived category map γ^!_f(F):f^#F --> f^!F, which is functorial as F varies over Cousin complexes on (Y,Δ), and induces an isomorphism f^#F = E(f^#F) --> E(f^!F). E here is the Cousin functor for the codimension function Δ. Further, we give conditions under which γ^!_f is an isomorphism. We also generalize the Residue Theorem of Grothendieck for residual complexes to Cousin complexes by defining trace as a sum of local residues when the map f is pseudo-proper.
We use the anti-equivalence between Cohen-Macaulay complexes and coherent sheaves on formal schemes to shed light on some older results and prove new results. We bring out the relations between a coherent sheaf M satisfying an S_2 condition and the lowest cohomology N of its "dual" complex. We show that if a scheme has a Gorenstein complex satisfying certain coherence conditions, then in a finite étale neighborhood of each point, it has a dualizing complex. If the scheme already has a dualizing complex, then we show that the Gorenstein complex must be a tensor product of a dualizing complex an…
We construct a canonical pseudofunctor ^# on the category of finite-type maps of (say) connected noetherian universally catenary finite-dimensional separated schemes, taking values in the category of Cousin complexes. This pseudofunctor is a concrete approximation to the restriction of the Grothendieck Duality pseudofunctor ^! to the full subcategory of the derived category having Cohen-Macaulay complexes as objects (a subcategory equivalent to the category of Cousin complexes, once a codimension function has been fixed). Specifically, for Cousin complexes M and any scheme map f:X -> Y as abov…
On a suitable category of formal schemes equipped with codimension functions we construct a canonical pseudofunctor (-)^# taking values in the corresponding categories of Cousin complexes. Cousin complexes on such a formal scheme X functorially represent derived-category objects F by the local cohomologies H_x^{codim(x)}(F) (x \in X) together with "residue maps" from the cohomology at x to that at each immediate specialization of x; this representation is faithful when restricted to F which are Cohen-Macaulay (CM), i.e., H_x^i(F)=0 unless i=codim(x). Formal schemes provide a framework for trea…
We present a robust categorical foundation for the duality theory introduced by Eisenbud and Schreyer to prove the Boij-Söderberg conjectures describing numerical invariants of syzygies. The new foundation allows us to extend the reach of the theory substantially. More explicitly, we construct a pairing between derived categories that simultaneously categorifies all the functionals used by Eisenbud and Schreyer. With this new tool, we describe the cone of Betti tables of finite, minimal free complexes having homology modules of specified dimensions over a polynomial ring, and we treat many exa…
The object of the paper is the dependence of Koszul complexes and dependence of dual Koszul complexes of two systems of non-homogeneous polynomials, when one system is a part of other system, in connection with the duality in a Koszul complex established by author earlier. Whence, the dependence of Koszul complexes and dependence of dual Koszul complexes follow when one system is linearly expressed through other system. Obtaned results are used in the proof of homotopic equivalence, formulated earlier by the author, of the Koszul complex and dual Koszul complex of a system of non-homogeneous p…
If K is a number field, arithmetic duality theorems for tori and complexes of tori over K are crucial to understand local-global principles for linear algebraic groups over K. When K is a global field of positive characteristic, we prove similar arithmetic duality theorems, including a Poitou-Tate exact sequence for Galois hypercohomology of complexes of tori. One of the main ingredients is Artin-Mazur-Milne duality theorem for fppf cohomology of finite flat commutative group schemes.
In this paper we present a new approach to Grothendieck duality over commutative rings. Our approach is based on the idea of rigid dualizing complexes, which was introduced by Van den Bergh in the context of noncommutative algebraic geometry. The method of rigidity was modified to work over general commutative base rings in our paper [YZ5]. In the present paper we obtain many of the important local features of Grothendieck duality, yet manage to avoid lengthy and difficult compatibility verifications. Our results apply to essentially finite type algebras over a regular noetherian finite dimens…
We obtain a linear algebra data presentation of the category of constructible with respect to perverse triangulation sheaves on a finite simplicial complex. We also establish Koszul duality between the above mentioned category and the category of perverse sheaves constructible with respect to the triangulation
We give several related versions of global Grothendieck Duality for unbounded complexes on noetherian formal schemes. The proofs, based on a non-trivial adaptation of Deligne's method for the special case of ordinary schemes, are reasonably self-contained, modulo the Special Adjoint Functor Theorem. An alternative approach, inspired by Neeman and based on recent results about "Brown Representability," is indicated as well. A section on applications and examples illustrates how these theorems synthesize a number of different duality-related results (local duality, formal duality, residue theore…
In this article we explain the theory of rigid residue complexes in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry, summarizing the background, recent results and anticipated future results. Unlike all previous approaches to Grothendiec Duality, the rigid approach concentrates on the construction of rigid residue complexes over rings, and their intricate yet robust properties. The geometrization, i.e. the passage to rigid residue complexes on schemes and Deligne-Mumford (DM) stacks, by gluing, is fairly easy. In the geometric part of the theory, the main results are the Rigid Residue Theorem and t…
We prove a duality theorem for simplicial complexes arising from a combinatorial construction we define, which applies to the squarefree monomial complexes for Veronese ideals of projective spaces and weighted projective spaces. Our theorem yields a formula for the multigraded Betti numbers of these Veronese ideals in terms of the reduced homology groups of these complexes which is dual to one given by Bruns and Herzog. We apply this formula in several ways, including by giving an algorithm for finding the highest syzygy of such a Veronese ideal.
We show that Bloch's complex of relative zero-cycles can be used as a dualizing complex over perfect fields and number rings. This leads to duality theorems for torsion sheaves on arbitrary separated schemes of finite type over algebraically closed fields, finite fields, local fields of mixed characteristic, and rings of integers in number rings, generalizing results which so far have only been known for smooth schemes or in low dimensions, and unify the p-adic and l-adic theory. As an application, we generalize Rojtman's theorem to normal, projective schemes.
We establish several strengthened versions of Lurie's Tannaka duality theorem for certain classes of spectral algebraic stacks. Our most general version of Tannaka duality identifies maps between stacks with exact symmetric monoidal functors between $\infty$-categories of quasi-coherent complexes which preserve connective and pseudo-coherent complexes.
We describe dualities and complexes of logarithmic forms and differentials for central affine and corresponding projective arrangements. We generalize the Borel-Serre formula from vector bundles to sheaves on projective d-space with locally free resolutions of length one. Combining these results we present a generalization of a formula due to Mustata and Schenck, relating the Poincare polynomial of an arrangement in projective 3-space (or a locally tame arrangement in projective d-space with zero-dimensional non-free locus) to the total Chern polynomial of its sheaf of logarithmic 1-forms.
For any Kac-Moody group $G$ with Borel $B$, we give a monoidal equivalence between the derived category of $B$-equivariant mixed complexes on the flag variety $G/B$ and (a certain completion of) the derived category of $B^\vee$-monodromic mixed complexes on the enhanced flag variety $G^\vee/U^\vee$, here $G^\vee$ is the Langlands dual of $G$. We also prove variants of this equivalence, one of which is the equivalence between the derived category of $U$-equivariant mixed complexes on the partial flag variety $G/P$ and certain "Whittaker model" category of mixed complexes on $G^\vee/B^\vee$. In …
Let $\mathbb{X}$ be a semiseparated Noetherian scheme with a dualizing complex $D$. We lift some well-known triangulated equivalences associated with Grothendieck duality to Quillen equivalences of model categories. In the process we are able to show that the Gorenstein flat model structure, on the category of quasi-coherent sheaves on $\mathbb{X}$, is Quillen equivalent to the Gorenstein injective model structure. Also noteworthy is that we extend the recollement of Krause to hold without the Noetherian condition. Using a set of flat generators, it holds for any quasi-compact semiseparated sc…
In this article, we prove that there is a canonical Verdier self-dual intersection space sheaf complex for the middle perversity on Witt spaces that admit compatible trivializations for their link bundles, for example toric varieties. If the space is an algebraic variety our construction takes place in the category of mixed Hodge modules. We obtain an intersection space cohomology theory, satisfying Poincaré duality, valid for a class of pseudomanifolds with arbitrary depth stratifications. The main new ingredient is the category of Künneth complexes; these are cohomologically constructible co…
We define cohomological complexes of locally compact abelian groups associated with varieties over $p$-adic fields and prove a duality theorem under some assumption. Our duality takes the form of Pontryagin duality between locally compact motivic cohomology groups.
In this paper we present a new approach to Grothendieck duality on schemes. Our approach is based on the idea of rigid dualizing complexes, which was introduced by Van den Bergh in the context of noncommutative algebraic geometry. We obtain most of the important features of Grothendieck duality, yet manage to avoid lengthy and difficult compatibility verifications. Let $f:X\to Y$ be a Cohen-Macaulay map of finite type between Noetherian schemes, and $:Y'\to Y$ a base change map, with $Y'$ Noetherian. Let $f'$ be the base change of $f$ under $g$ and $g'$ the base change of $g$ under $f$. We show that there is a canonical isomorphism between ${g'}^*ω_f$ and $ω_{f'}$, where $ω_f$ and $ω_{f'}$ are the relative dualizing sheaves. The map underlying this isomorphism is easily described when $f$ is proper, and has subtler description when $f$ is not. If $f$ is smooth we show that this map between the dualizing sheaves corresponds to the canonical identification…
For a left coherent ring A with every left ideal having a countable set of generators, we show that the coderived category of left A-modules is compactly generated by the bounded derived category of finitely presented left A-modules (reproducing a particular case of a recent result of Stovicek with our methods). Furthermore, we present the definition of a dualizing complex of fp-injective modules over a pair of noncommutative coherent rings A and B, and construct an equivalence between the coderived category of A-modules and the contraderived category of B-modules. Finally, we define the notio…
The notions of $\mathbb Q$-Gorenstein scheme and of $\mathbb Q$-Gorenstein morphism are introduced for locally Noetherian schemes by dualizing complexes and (relative) canonical sheaves. These cover all the previously known notions of $\mathbb Q$-Gorenstein algebraic variety and of $\mathbb Q$-Gorenstein deformation satisfying Kollár condition, over a field. By studies on relative $\mathbf S_{2}$-condition and base change properties, valuable results are proved for $\mathbb Q$-Gorenstein morphisms, which include infinitesimal criterion, valuative criterion, $\mathbb Q$-Gorenstein refinement, a…
We generalize the adjunction between the functors $Rf_*$ and $f^!$ of derived categories of quasi-coherent sheaves for proper morphisms $f\colon X \to Y$ of Noetherian schemes to the following situation: Let $f$ be a finite type morphism and let $Z' \subseteq X$ and $Z \subseteq Y$ be closed subsets such that $f$ restricts to a proper morphism $f'\colon Z'\to Z$ of $f$. Then the functor $Rf_*$ is left adjoint to $RΓ_{Z'}f^!$ when considered as functors between complexes supported on $Z'$ or $Z$.
Let $X$ be a separated scheme of dimension $d$ of finite type over a perfect field $k$ of positive characteristic $p$. In this work, we show that Bloch's cycle complex $\mathbb{Z}^c_X$ of zero cycles mod $p^n$ is quasi-isomorphic to the Cartier operator fixed part of a certain dualizing complex from coherent duality theory. From this we obtain new vanishing results for the higher Chow groups of zero cycles with mod $p^n$ coefficients for singular varieties.
We establish arithmetic duality theorems for short complexes associated to reductive groups over $p$-adic function fields. Using dualities, we deduce obstructions to weak approximation for certain reductive groups (especially quasi-split ones) and relate this obstruction to an unramified Galois cohomology group.
For a commutative ring $R$, we exploit localization techniques and point-free topology to give an explicit realization of both the Zariski frame of $R$ (the frame of radical ideals in $R$) and its Hochster dual frame, as lattices in the poset of localizing subcategories of the unbounded derived category $D(R)$. This yields new conceptual proofs of the classical theorems of Hopkins-Neeman and Thomason. Next we revisit and simplify Balmer's theory of spectra and supports for tensor triangulated categories from the viewpoint of frames and Hochster duality. Finally we exploit our results to show h…
