In this paper we present a new approach to Grothendieck duality on schemes. Our approach is based on the idea of rigid dualizing complexes, which was introduced by Van den Bergh in the context of noncommutative algebraic geometry. We obtain most of the important features of Grothendieck duality, yet manage to avoid lengthy and difficult compatibility verifications. Our results apply to finite type schemes over a regular noetherian finite dimensional base ring, and hence are suitable for arithmetic geometry.
In this article we survey recent results on rigid dualizing complexes over commutative algebras. We begin by recalling what are dualizing complexes. Next we define rigid complexes, and explain their functorial properties. Due to the possible presence of torsion, we must use differential graded algebras in the constructions. We then discuss rigid dualizing complexes. Finally we show how rigid complexes can be used to understand Cohen-Macaulay homomorphisms and relative dualizing sheaves.
Let $X$ be a separated scheme of dimension $d$ of finite type over a perfect field $k$ of positive characteristic $p$. In this work, we show that Bloch's cycle complex $\mathbb{Z}^c_X$ of zero cycles mod $p^n$ is quasi-isomorphic to the Cartier operator fixed part of a certain dualizing complex from coherent duality theory. From this we obtain new vanishing results for the higher Chow groups of zero cycles with mod $p^n$ coefficients for singular varieties.
Let $k$ be a field, and let $X,Y$ be two locally noetherian $k$-schemes (respectively $k$-formal schemes) with dualizing complexes $R_X$ and $R_Y$ respectively. We show that $R_X \boxtimes_{k} R_Y$ (respectively its derived completion) is a dualizing complex over $X\times_{k} Y$ if and only if $X\times_{k} Y$ is locally noetherian of finite Krull dimension.
A quasi-coherent ringed scheme is a pair (X,A), where X is a scheme, and A is a noncommutative quasi-coherent O_X-ring. We introduce dualizing complexes over quasi-coherent ringed schemes and study their properties. For a separated differential quasi-coherent ringed scheme of finite type over a field, we prove existence and uniqueness of a rigid dualizing complex. In the proof we use the theory of perverse coherent sheaves in order to glue local pieces of the rigid dualizing complex into a global complex.
Let C be a semidualizing complex over a noetherian local ring A. If there exists a local homomorphism with source A satisfying some homological properties, then C is dualizing.
In this paper we present a new approach to Grothendieck duality over commutative rings. Our approach is based on the idea of rigid dualizing complexes, which was introduced by Van den Bergh in the context of noncommutative algebraic geometry. The method of rigidity was modified to work over general commutative base rings in our paper [YZ5]. In the present paper we obtain many of the important local features of Grothendieck duality, yet manage to avoid lengthy and difficult compatibility verifications. Our results apply to essentially finite type algebras over a regular noetherian finite dimens…
A differential algebra of finite type over a field k is a filtered algebra A, such that the associated graded algebra is finite over its center, and the center is a finitely generated k-algebra. The prototypical example is the algebra of differential operators on a smooth affine variety, when char k = 0. We study homological and geometric properties of differential algebras of finite type. The main results concern the rigid dualizing complex over such an algebra A: its existence, structure and variance properties. We also define and study perverse A-modules, and show how they are related to th…
We prove that there is a map from Bloch's cycle complex to Kato's complex of Milnor K-theory, which induces a quasi-isomorphism from étale sheafified cycle complex to the Gersten complex of logarithmic de Rham--Witt sheaves. Next we show that the truncation of Bloch's cycle complex at -3 is quasi-isomorphic to Spiess' dualizing complex.
We prove basic facts about reflexivity in derived categories over noetherian schemes; and about related notions such as semidualizing complexes, invertible complexes, and Gorenstein-perfect maps. Also, we study a notion of rigidity with respect to semidualizing complexes, in particular, relative dualizing complexes for Gorenstein-perfect maps. Our results include theorems of Yekutieli and Zhang concerning rigid dualizing complexes on schemes. This work is a continuation of part I, which dealt with commutative rings.
We use the anti-equivalence between Cohen-Macaulay complexes and coherent sheaves on formal schemes to shed light on some older results and prove new results. We bring out the relations between a coherent sheaf M satisfying an S_2 condition and the lowest cohomology N of its "dual" complex. We show that if a scheme has a Gorenstein complex satisfying certain coherence conditions, then in a finite étale neighborhood of each point, it has a dualizing complex. If the scheme already has a dualizing complex, then we show that the Gorenstein complex must be a tensor product of a dualizing complex an…
Let $f:X\to Y$ be a Cohen-Macaulay map of finite type between Noetherian schemes, and $:Y'\to Y$ a base change map, with $Y'$ Noetherian. Let $f'$ be the base change of $f$ under $g$ and $g'$ the base change of $g$ under $f$. We show that there is a canonical isomorphism between ${g'}^*ω_f$ and $ω_{f'}$, where $ω_f$ and $ω_{f'}$ are the relative dualizing sheaves. The map underlying this isomorphism is easily described when $f$ is proper, and has subtler description when $f$ is not. If $f$ is smooth we show that this map between the dualizing sheaves corresponds to the canonical identification…
For a left coherent ring A with every left ideal having a countable set of generators, we show that the coderived category of left A-modules is compactly generated by the bounded derived category of finitely presented left A-modules (reproducing a particular case of a recent result of Stovicek with our methods). Furthermore, we present the definition of a dualizing complex of fp-injective modules over a pair of noncommutative coherent rings A and B, and construct an equivalence between the coderived category of A-modules and the contraderived category of B-modules. Finally, we define the notio…
Let $k$ be a perfect field of characteristic $p > 0$, $W_n = W_n(k)$. For separated $k$-schemes of finite type, we explain how rigid cohomology with compact supports can be computed as the cohomology of certain de Rham-Witt complexes with coefficients. This result generalizes the classical comparison theorem of Bloch-Illusie for proper and smooth schemes. In the proof, the key step is an extension of the Bloch-Illusie theorem to the case of cohomologies relative to $W_n$ with coefficients in a crystal that is only supposed to be flat over $W_n$.
We show that Bloch's complex of relative zero-cycles can be used as a dualizing complex over perfect fields and number rings. This leads to duality theorems for torsion sheaves on arbitrary separated schemes of finite type over algebraically closed fields, finite fields, local fields of mixed characteristic, and rings of integers in number rings, generalizing results which so far have only been known for smooth schemes or in low dimensions, and unify the p-adic and l-adic theory. As an application, we generalize Rojtman's theorem to normal, projective schemes.
We prove a version of faithfully flat descent in rigid analytic geometry, for almost perfect complexes and without finiteness assumptions on the rings involved. This extends results of Drinfeld for vector bundles.
We consider commutative DG rings (better known as nonpositive strongly commutative associative unital DG algebras). For such a DG ring $A$ we define the notions of perfect, tilting, dualizing, Cohen-Macaulay and rigid DG $A$-modules. Geometrically perfect DG modules are defined by a local condition on $\operatorname{Spec} \bar{A}$, where $\bar{A} := \operatorname{Spec} \, \operatorname{H}^0(A)$. Algebraically perfect DG modules are those that can be obtained from $A$ by finitely many shifts, direct summands and cones. Tilting DG modules are those that have inverses w.r.t. the derived tensor pr…
Let A be a commutative ring, B a commutative A-algebra and M a complex of B-modules. We begin by constructing the square Sq_{B/A} M, which is also a complex of B-modules. The squaring operation is a quadratic functor, and its construction requires differential graded (DG) algebras. If there exists an isomorphism ρ: M \iso Sq_{B/A} M then the pair (M,ρ) is called a rigid complex over B relative to A (there are some finiteness conditions). There is an obvious notion of rigid morphism between rigid complexes. We establish several properties of rigid complexes, including their uniqueness, existenc…
The notions of $\mathbb Q$-Gorenstein scheme and of $\mathbb Q$-Gorenstein morphism are introduced for locally Noetherian schemes by dualizing complexes and (relative) canonical sheaves. These cover all the previously known notions of $\mathbb Q$-Gorenstein algebraic variety and of $\mathbb Q$-Gorenstein deformation satisfying Kollár condition, over a field. By studies on relative $\mathbf S_{2}$-condition and base change properties, valuable results are proved for $\mathbb Q$-Gorenstein morphisms, which include infinitesimal criterion, valuative criterion, $\mathbb Q$-Gorenstein refinement, a…
I extend the definitions of schemes relative to monoids with zero - and therefore, toric geometry - to the world of formal schemes. This expands the usual framework to include, for instance, models for Mumford's degenerating Abelian varieties. Following the usual toric paradigm, normal formal monoid schemes can be classified in terms of certain cone complexes, and their properties understood in combinatorial terms. I use this to give a simple algebraisation criterion. I also reformulate the traditional notions of separated and proper morphism in a manner amenable to the context of relative for…
In this paper, we study a deformation theory of rigid analytic spaces. We develop a theory of cotangent complexes for rigid geometry which fits in with our deformations. We then use the complexes to give a cohomological description of infinitesimal deformation of rigid analytic spaces. Moreover, we will prove an existence of a formal versal family for a proper rigid analytic space.
In this article we explain the theory of rigid residue complexes in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry, summarizing the background, recent results and anticipated future results. Unlike all previous approaches to Grothendiec Duality, the rigid approach concentrates on the construction of rigid residue complexes over rings, and their intricate yet robust properties. The geometrization, i.e. the passage to rigid residue complexes on schemes and Deligne-Mumford (DM) stacks, by gluing, is fairly easy. In the geometric part of the theory, the main results are the Rigid Residue Theorem and t…
Let $\mathbb{X}$ be a semiseparated Noetherian scheme with a dualizing complex $D$. We lift some well-known triangulated equivalences associated with Grothendieck duality to Quillen equivalences of model categories. In the process we are able to show that the Gorenstein flat model structure, on the category of quasi-coherent sheaves on $\mathbb{X}$, is Quillen equivalent to the Gorenstein injective model structure. Also noteworthy is that we extend the recollement of Krause to hold without the Noetherian condition. Using a set of flat generators, it holds for any quasi-compact semiseparated sc…
On a suitable category of formal schemes equipped with codimension functions we construct a canonical pseudofunctor (-)^# taking values in the corresponding categories of Cousin complexes. Cousin complexes on such a formal scheme X functorially represent derived-category objects F by the local cohomologies H_x^{codim(x)}(F) (x \in X) together with "residue maps" from the cohomology at x to that at each immediate specialization of x; this representation is faithful when restricted to F which are Cohen-Macaulay (CM), i.e., H_x^i(F)=0 unless i=codim(x). Formal schemes provide a framework for trea…
We give several related versions of global Grothendieck Duality for unbounded complexes on noetherian formal schemes. The proofs, based on a non-trivial adaptation of Deligne's method for the special case of ordinary schemes, are reasonably self-contained, modulo the Special Adjoint Functor Theorem. An alternative approach, inspired by Neeman and based on recent results about "Brown Representability," is indicated as well. A section on applications and examples illustrates how these theorems synthesize a number of different duality-related results (local duality, formal duality, residue theore…
