In this article we survey recent results on rigid dualizing complexes over commutative algebras. We begin by recalling what are dualizing complexes. Next we define rigid complexes, and explain their functorial properties. Due to the possible presence of torsion, we must use differential graded algebras in the constructions. We then discuss rigid dualizing complexes. Finally we show how rigid complexes can be used to understand Cohen-Macaulay homomorphisms and relative dualizing sheaves.
Let $k$ be a field, and let $X,Y$ be two locally noetherian $k$-schemes (respectively $k$-formal schemes) with dualizing complexes $R_X$ and $R_Y$ respectively. We show that $R_X \boxtimes_{k} R_Y$ (respectively its derived completion) is a dualizing complex over $X\times_{k} Y$ if and only if $X\times_{k} Y$ is locally noetherian of finite Krull dimension.
Let C be a semidualizing complex over a noetherian local ring A. If there exists a local homomorphism with source A satisfying some homological properties, then C is dualizing.
In this paper we present a new approach to Grothendieck duality over commutative rings. Our approach is based on the idea of rigid dualizing complexes, which was introduced by Van den Bergh in the context of noncommutative algebraic geometry. The method of rigidity was modified to work over general commutative base rings in our paper [YZ5]. In the present paper we obtain many of the important local features of Grothendieck duality, yet manage to avoid lengthy and difficult compatibility verifications. Our results apply to essentially finite type algebras over a regular noetherian finite dimens…
A quasi-coherent ringed scheme is a pair (X,A), where X is a scheme, and A is a noncommutative quasi-coherent O_X-ring. We introduce dualizing complexes over quasi-coherent ringed schemes and study their properties. For a separated differential quasi-coherent ringed scheme of finite type over a field, we prove existence and uniqueness of a rigid dualizing complex. In the proof we use the theory of perverse coherent sheaves in order to glue local pieces of the rigid dualizing complex into a global complex.
A differential algebra of finite type over a field k is a filtered algebra A, such that the associated graded algebra is finite over its center, and the center is a finitely generated k-algebra. The prototypical example is the algebra of differential operators on a smooth affine variety, when char k = 0. We study homological and geometric properties of differential algebras of finite type. The main results concern the rigid dualizing complex over such an algebra A: its existence, structure and variance properties. We also define and study perverse A-modules, and show how they are related to th…
We use the anti-equivalence between Cohen-Macaulay complexes and coherent sheaves on formal schemes to shed light on some older results and prove new results. We bring out the relations between a coherent sheaf M satisfying an S_2 condition and the lowest cohomology N of its "dual" complex. We show that if a scheme has a Gorenstein complex satisfying certain coherence conditions, then in a finite étale neighborhood of each point, it has a dualizing complex. If the scheme already has a dualizing complex, then we show that the Gorenstein complex must be a tensor product of a dualizing complex an…
Let $X$ be a separated scheme of dimension $d$ of finite type over a perfect field $k$ of positive characteristic $p$. In this work, we show that Bloch's cycle complex $\mathbb{Z}^c_X$ of zero cycles mod $p^n$ is quasi-isomorphic to the Cartier operator fixed part of a certain dualizing complex from coherent duality theory. From this we obtain new vanishing results for the higher Chow groups of zero cycles with mod $p^n$ coefficients for singular varieties.
In this paper we present a new approach to Grothendieck duality on schemes. Our approach is based on the idea of rigid dualizing complexes, which was introduced by Van den Bergh in the context of noncommutative algebraic geometry. We obtain most of the important features of Grothendieck duality, yet manage to avoid lengthy and difficult compatibility verifications. Our results apply to finite type schemes over a regular noetherian finite dimensional base ring, and hence are suitable for arithmetic geometry.
We prove that there is a map from Bloch's cycle complex to Kato's complex of Milnor K-theory, which induces a quasi-isomorphism from étale sheafified cycle complex to the Gersten complex of logarithmic de Rham--Witt sheaves. Next we show that the truncation of Bloch's cycle complex at -3 is quasi-isomorphic to Spiess' dualizing complex.
For a left coherent ring A with every left ideal having a countable set of generators, we show that the coderived category of left A-modules is compactly generated by the bounded derived category of finitely presented left A-modules (reproducing a particular case of a recent result of Stovicek with our methods). Furthermore, we present the definition of a dualizing complex of fp-injective modules over a pair of noncommutative coherent rings A and B, and construct an equivalence between the coderived category of A-modules and the contraderived category of B-modules. Finally, we define the notio…
This paper introduces two new notions of graded linear resolution and graded linear quotients, which generalize the concepts of linear resolution property and linear quotient for modules over the polynomial ring $A=k[x_1, \dots ,x_n]$. Besides, we compare graded linearity with componentwise linearity in general. For modules minimally generated by a regular sequence in a maximal ideal of $A$, we show that graded linear quotients imply graded linear resolution property for the colon ideals. On the other hand, we provide specific characterizations of graded linear resolution property for the Stan…
This is the fourth (and last) prepublication version of a book on derived categories, that will be published by Cambridge University Press. The purpose of the book is to provide solid foundations for the theory of derived categories, and to present several applications of this theory in commutative and noncommutative algebra. The emphasis is on constructions and examples, rather than on axiomatics. Here are the topics covered in the book: - A review of standard facts on abelian categories. - Differential graded algebra (DG rings, DG modules, DG categories and DG functors). - Triangulated categ…
We show that Bloch's complex of relative zero-cycles can be used as a dualizing complex over perfect fields and number rings. This leads to duality theorems for torsion sheaves on arbitrary separated schemes of finite type over algebraically closed fields, finite fields, local fields of mixed characteristic, and rings of integers in number rings, generalizing results which so far have only been known for smooth schemes or in low dimensions, and unify the p-adic and l-adic theory. As an application, we generalize Rojtman's theorem to normal, projective schemes.
Let X be a smooth projective variety with torsion-free Picard group. We introduce complexes of vector spaces whose homology determines the structure of the minimal free resolution of the Cox ring of X over the polynomial ring and show how the homology of these complexes can be studied by purely geometric methods. As an application of these techniques we give a simple new proof of a characterization of the Cox rings of Del Pezzo surfaces (of degree >1) conjectured by Batyrev and Popov.
Let A be a commutative ring, B a commutative A-algebra and M a complex of B-modules. We begin by constructing the square Sq_{B/A} M, which is also a complex of B-modules. The squaring operation is a quadratic functor, and its construction requires differential graded (DG) algebras. If there exists an isomorphism ρ: M \iso Sq_{B/A} M then the pair (M,ρ) is called a rigid complex over B relative to A (there are some finiteness conditions). There is an obvious notion of rigid morphism between rigid complexes. We establish several properties of rigid complexes, including their uniqueness, existenc…
We describe the intersection complex of any perversity of a toric variety completely in terms of the associated fan. It is described by a finite complex of finite dimensional graded vector spaces which we call graded exterior modules. The intersection complexes of the middle perversity are treated in the second part following this article.
Let $A$ be a connected graded $k$-algebra with a balanced dualizing complex. We prove that $A$ is a Koszul AS-regular algebra if and only if that the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and the Ext-regularity coincide for all finitely generated $A$-modules. This can be viewed as a non-commutative version of \cite[Theorem 1.3]{ro}. By using Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity, we prove that any Koszul standard AS-Gorenstein algebra is AS-regular. As a preparation to prove the main result, we also prove the following statements are equivalent: (1) $A$ is AS-Gorenstein; (2) $A$ has finite left injective di…
In this paper, we try to realize the unbounded derived category of an abelian category as the homotopy category of a Quillen model structure on the category of unbounded chain complexes. We construct such a model structure based on injective resolutions for an arbitrary Grothendieck category, as has apparently also been done by Morel. In particular, this works for sheaves on a ringed space, and for quasi-coherent sheaves on a quasi-compact, quasi-separated scheme. However, this injective model structure is not well suited to studying the derived tensor product, so we investigate other model st…
We consider commutative DG rings (better known as nonpositive strongly commutative associative unital DG algebras). For such a DG ring $A$ we define the notions of perfect, tilting, dualizing, Cohen-Macaulay and rigid DG $A$-modules. Geometrically perfect DG modules are defined by a local condition on $\operatorname{Spec} \bar{A}$, where $\bar{A} := \operatorname{Spec} \, \operatorname{H}^0(A)$. Algebraically perfect DG modules are those that can be obtained from $A$ by finitely many shifts, direct summands and cones. Tilting DG modules are those that have inverses w.r.t. the derived tensor pr…
We prove that for any finite-dimensional differential graded algebra with separable semisimple part the category of perfect modules is equivalent to a full subcategory of the category of perfect complexes on a smooth projective scheme with a full separable semi-exceptional collection. Moreover, we also show that it gives a characterization of such categories assuming that a subcategory is idempotent complete and has a classical generator.
Given a graded vector space V, the variety of complexes Com(V) consists of all differentials making V into a cochain complex. This variety was first introduced by Buchsbaum and Eisenbud and later studied by Kempf, De Concini, Strickland and many other people. It is highly singular and can be seen as a proto-typical singular moduli space in algebraic geometry. We introduce a natural derived analog of Com(V) which is a smooth derived scheme RCom(V). It can be seen as classifying twisted complexes. We study the cohomology of the dg-algebra of regular functions om RCom(V). It turns out that the na…
This paper is devoted to the comparison of different localized categories of differential complexes. The first result is that the canonical functor from the category of complexes of differential operators of order one (defined by Herrera and Lieberman) to the category of differential complexes (of any order, defined by M. Saito), both localized with respect to a suitable notion of quasi-isomorphism, is an equivalence of categories. Then we prove a similar result for a filtered version of the previous categories (defined respectively by Du Bois and M.Saito), localized with respect to graded-qua…
There has long been a philosophy that every deformation problem in characteristic zero should be governed by a differential graded Lie algebra (DGLA). In this paper, the theory of Simplicial Deformation Complexes (SDCs) is developed, as an alternative to DGLAs. These work in all characteristics, and for many problems can be constructed canonically. In particular, SDCs are constructed for the problems of deforming an arbitrary scheme, of deforming a Hopf algebra, and of deforming a representation of the fundamental group. In characteristic zero, SDCs and DGLAs are equivalent.
We study the shifted Poisson structure on the cochain complex C*(g) of a graded Lie algebra arising from shifted Lie bialgebra structure on g. We apply this to construct a 1-shifted Poisson structures on an infinitesimal quotient of the derived variety of complexes RCom(V) by a subgroup of the automorphisms of V, and a non-shifted Poisson structure on an appropriately defined derived variety of 1-periodic complexes, extending the standard Kirillov-Kostant Poisson structure on gl*_n. We also show that in the case of RCom(V) the 1-shifted structure is up to homotopy a Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra …
We study the differential graded Lie algebra of endomorphisms of the Koszul resolution of a regular sequence on a unitary commutative $K$-algebra $R$ and we prove that it is homotopy abelian over $K$, while it is generally not formal over $R$. We apply this result to prove an annihilation theorem for obstructions of (derived) deformations of locally complete intersection ideal sheaves on projective schemes.
