This paper is devoted to the comparison of different localized categories of differential complexes. The first result is that the canonical functor from the category of complexes of differential operators of order one (defined by Herrera and Lieberman) to the category of differential complexes (of any order, defined by M. Saito), both localized with respect to a suitable notion of quasi-isomorphism, is an equivalence of categories. Then we prove a similar result for a filtered version of the previous categories (defined respectively by Du Bois and M.Saito), localized with respect to graded-quasi-isomorphisms, thus answering a question posed by M. Saito.
We show how to recover the underlying topological space of a quasi-compact quasi-separated scheme from the tensor triangulated structure on its category of perfect complexes.
We investigate equivalences between the categories of perfects complexes of the quotients of two smooth projective schemes by the action of a finite group. As a result we give a necessary and sufficient condition for an equivalence between the equivariant derived categories to descend to the categories of perfect complexes.
We develop a theory of unbounded derived categories of quasi-coherent sheaves on algebraic stacks. In particular, we show that these categories are compactly generated by perfect complexes for stacks that either have finite stabilizers or are local quotient stacks. We also extend Toën and Antieau--Gepner's results on derived Azumaya algebras and compact generation of sheaves on linear categories from derived schemes to derived Deligne--Mumford stacks. These are all consequences of our main theorem: compact generation of a presheaf of triangulated categories on an algebraic stack is local for t…
Orlov's famous representability theorem asserts that any fully faithful functor between the derived categories of coherent sheaves on smooth projective varieties is a Fourier-Mukai functor. This result has been extended by Lunts and Orlov to include functors from perfect complexes to quasi-coherent complexes. In this paper we show that the latter extension is false without the full faithfulness hypothesis. Our results are based on the properties of scalar extensions of derived categories, whose investigation was started by Pawel Sosna and the first author.
We prove that the dg category of perfect complexes on a smooth, proper Deligne-Mumford stack over a field of characteristic zero is geometric in the sense of Orlov, and in particular smooth and proper. On the level of triangulated categories, this means that the derived category of perfect complexes embeds as an admissible subcategory into the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on a smooth, projective variety. The same holds for a smooth, projective, tame Artin stack over an arbitrary field.
In this paper we introduce the category of stratified Pro-modules and the notion of induced object in this category. We propose a translation of a Morihiko Saito equivalence result using the dual language of Pro-objects. So we prove an equivalence between the derived category of stratified Pro-modules and the category of Pro-differential complexes. We also supply a comparison with the notion of Crystal in Pro-module (introduced by P. Deligne in 1960).
We prove a structure theorem for the differential operator in the 0-term of the ${\cal V}$-filtration with respect to a free divisor. Using this theorem, we give a formula for the logarithmic de Rham complex in terms of ${\cal V}_0$-modules. We also give a sufficient condition for perversity of the logarithmic de Rham complex.
In this paper we study the homotopy limits of cosimplicial diagrams of dg-categories. We first give an explicit construction of the totalization of such a diagram and then show that the totalization agrees with the homotopy limit in the following two cases: (1) the complexes of sheaves of $\mathcal O$-modules on the Čech nerve of an open cover of a ringed space $(X, \mathcal O)$; (2) the complexes of sheaves on the simplicial nerve of a discrete group $G$ acting on a space. The explicit models we obtain in this way are twisted complexes as well as their $D$-module and $G$-equivariant versions.…
The paper contains general results on the uniqueness of a DG enhancement for triangulated categories. As a consequence we obtain such uniqueness for the unbounded categories of quasi-coherent sheaves, for the triangulated categories of perfect complexes, and for the bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves on quasi-projective schemes. If a scheme is projective then we also prove a strong uniqueness for the triangulated category of perfect complexes and for the bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves. These results directly imply that fully faithful functors from the bounded derive…
We prove that the Hilbert scheme of degeneracy loci of pairs of global sections of Omega(2), the twisted cotangent bundle on P^(n-1), is unirational and dominated by the Grassmannian of lines in the projective space of skew-symmetric forms over a vector space of dimension n. We provide a constructive method to find the fibers of the dominant map. In classical terminology, this amounts to giving a method to realize all the pencils of linear line complexes having a prescribed set of centers. In particular, we show that the previous map is birational when n=4.
Much of the homotopical and homological structure of the categories of chain complexes and topological spaces can be deduced from the existence and properties of the 'simple' functors Tot : {double chain complexes} -> {chain complexes} and geometric realization : {sSets} -> {Top}, or similarly, Tot : {simplicial chain complexes} -> {chain complexes} and | | : {sTop} -> {Top}. The purpose of this thesis is to abstract this situation, and to this end we introduce the notion of '(co)simplicial descent category'. It is inspired by Guillen-Navarros's '(cubical) descent categories'. The key ingredie…
We prove that the derived categories of abelian categories have unique enhancements -- all of them, the unbounded, bounded, bounded above and bounded below derived categories. The unseparated and left completed derived categories of a Grothendieck abelian category are also shown to have unique enhancements. Finally we show that the derived category of complexes with quasi-coherent cohomology and the category of perfect complexes have unique enhancements for quasi-compact and quasi-separated schemes.
In this paper we discuss different properties of noncommutative schemes over a field. We define a noncommutative scheme as a differential graded category of a special type. We study regularity, smoothness and properness for noncommutative schemes. Admissible subcategories of categories of perfect complexes on smooth projective schemes provide natural examples of smooth and proper noncommutative schemes that are called geometric noncommutative schemes. In this paper we show that the world of all geometric noncommutative schemes is closed under an operation of a gluing of differential graded cat…
We study certain 'weights' for triangulated categories endowed with $t$-structures. Our results axiomatize and describe in detail the relations between the Chow weight structure (introduced in a preceding paper), the (conjectural) motivic t-structure for Voevodsky's motives, and the conjectural weight filtration for them. This picture becomes non-conjectural when restricted to the derived categories of 1-motives (over a smooth base) and of Artin-Tate motives over number fields; other examples include Beilinson's derived category of graded polarizable mixed Hodge complexes and Saito's derived c…
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring. We introduce the notion of localization functors $λ^W$ with cosupports in arbitrary subsets $W$ of $\text{Spec}\, R$; it is a common generalization of localizations with respect to multiplicatively closed subsets and left derived functors of ideal-adic completion functors. We prove several results about the localization functors $λ^W$, including an explicit way to calculate $λ^W$ by the notion of Cech complexes. As an application, we can give a simpler proof of a classical theorem by Gruson and Raynaud, which states that the projective dimension of a f…
In this article we survey recent results on rigid dualizing complexes over commutative algebras. We begin by recalling what are dualizing complexes. Next we define rigid complexes, and explain their functorial properties. Due to the possible presence of torsion, we must use differential graded algebras in the constructions. We then discuss rigid dualizing complexes. Finally we show how rigid complexes can be used to understand Cohen-Macaulay homomorphisms and relative dualizing sheaves.
This note proposes a new method to complete a triangulated category, which is based on the notion of a Cauchy sequence. We apply this to categories of perfect complexes. It is shown that the bounded derived category of finitely presented modules over a right coherent ring is the completion of the category of perfect complexes. The result extends to non-affine noetherian schemes and gives rise to a direct construction of the singularity category. The parallel theory of completion for abelian categories is compatible with the completion of derived categories. There are three appendices. The firs…
A semiorthogonal decomposition for the bounded derived category (the category of perfect complexes in a non smooth case) of coherent sheaves on a Brauer Severi scheme is given. It relies on bounded derived categories (categories of perfect complexes in a non smooth case) of suitably twisted coherent sheaves on the base.
We present a robust categorical foundation for the duality theory introduced by Eisenbud and Schreyer to prove the Boij-Söderberg conjectures describing numerical invariants of syzygies. The new foundation allows us to extend the reach of the theory substantially. More explicitly, we construct a pairing between derived categories that simultaneously categorifies all the functionals used by Eisenbud and Schreyer. With this new tool, we describe the cone of Betti tables of finite, minimal free complexes having homology modules of specified dimensions over a polynomial ring, and we treat many exa…
In this paper we prove that a morphism between schemes or stacks naturally corresponds to a symmetric monoidal functor between stable infinity-categories of quasi-coherent complexes. It can be viewed as a derived analogue of Tannaka duality. As a consequence, we deduce that an algebraic stack satisfying a certain condition can be recovered from the stable infinity-category of quasi-coherent complexes with tensor operation.
We construct generalized Weyman complexes for coherent sheaves on projective space and describe explicitly how the differential depend on the differentials in the correpsonding Tate resolution. We apply this to define the Weyman complex of a coherent sheaf on a projective variety and explain how certain Weyman complexes can be regarded as Fourier-Mukai transforms.
We instal homological algebra, including derived functors, on certain non-additive categories like categories of pointed CW-complexes, modules of monoids or sheaves thereof. We apply this theory to Monoid schemes and sheaves on them, compare the result with the base change and prove several structural theorems.
This is the fourth (and last) prepublication version of a book on derived categories, that will be published by Cambridge University Press. The purpose of the book is to provide solid foundations for the theory of derived categories, and to present several applications of this theory in commutative and noncommutative algebra. The emphasis is on constructions and examples, rather than on axiomatics. Here are the topics covered in the book: - A review of standard facts on abelian categories. - Differential graded algebra (DG rings, DG modules, DG categories and DG functors). - Triangulated categ…
For a locally presentable abelian category $\mathsf B$ with a projective generator, we construct the projective derived and contraderived model structures on the category of complexes, proving in particular the existence of enough homotopy projective complexes of projective objects. We also show that the derived category $\mathsf D(\mathsf B)$ is generated, as a triangulated category with coproducts, by the projective generator of $\mathsf B$. For a Grothendieck abelian category $\mathsf A$, we construct the injective derived and coderived model structures on complexes. Assuming Vopenka's prin…
A differential algebra of finite type over a field k is a filtered algebra A, such that the associated graded algebra is finite over its center, and the center is a finitely generated k-algebra. The prototypical example is the algebra of differential operators on a smooth affine variety, when char k = 0. We study homological and geometric properties of differential algebras of finite type. The main results concern the rigid dualizing complex over such an algebra A: its existence, structure and variance properties. We also define and study perverse A-modules, and show how they are related to th…
We define model category structures on the category of chain complexes over a Grothendieck abelian category depending on the choice of a generating family, and we study their behaviour with respect to tensor products and stabilization. This gives convenient tools to construct and understand triangulated categories of motives and we consider here the case of mixed motives over a regular base scheme.
To any triangulated category with tensor product $(K,\otimes)$, we associate a topological space $Spc(K,\otimes)$, by means of thick subcategories of $K$, a la Hopkins-Neeman-Thomason. Moreover, to each open subset $U$ of $Spc(K,\otimes)$, we associate a triangulated category $K(U)$, producing what could be thought of as a presheaf of triangulated categories. Applying this to the derived category $(K,\otimes):=(D^{perf}(X),\otimes^L)$ of perfect complexes on a noetherian scheme $X$, the topological space $Spc(K,\otimes)$ turns out to be the underlying topological space of $X$; moreover, for ea…
We study differential forms on an algebraic compactification of a moduli space of metric graphs. Canonical examples of such forms are obtained by pulling back invariant differentials along a tropical Torelli map. The invariant differential forms in question generate the stable real cohomology of the general linear group, as shown by Borel. By integrating such invariant forms over the space of metrics on a graph, we define canonical period integrals associated to graphs, which we prove are always finite and take the form of generalised Feynman integrals. Furthermore, canonical integrals can be …
We study fppf descent for enhanced derived categories. We revisit the work of [HS] and [TV08] in a lax context. More precisely, we construct a Cartesian and coCartesian fibration ${}^{\mathrm{op}}\mathscr D^+_S\rightarrow N(\mathop{\mathrm{Sch}}_S)$ whose fibre over an $S$-scheme $T$ is the opposite $\mathscr D^+(T)^{\mathrm{op}}$ of the quasicategory of bounded below complexes of $\mathscr O_T$-modules. We show that this fibration satisfies fppf-descent for schemes.
It follows from the work of Burban and Drozd arXiv:0905.1231 that for nodal curves $C$, the derived category of modules over the Auslander order $\mathcal{A}_C$ provides a categorical (smooth and proper) resolution of the category of perfect complexes $\mathrm{Perf}(C)$. On the A-side, it follows from the work of Haiden-Katzarkov-Kontsevich arXiv:1409.8611 that for punctured surfaces $X$ with stops $Λ$ at their boundary, the partially wrapped Fukaya category $\mathcal{W}(X,Λ)$ provides a categorical (smooth and proper) resolution of the compact Fukaya category $\mathcal{F}(X)$. Inspired by thi…
