The light-cone Hamiltonians for spin 1 and spin 2 fields, describing both the pure and the maximally supersymmetric theories, may be expressed as quadratic forms. In this paper, we show that this feature extends to light-cone higher spin theories. To first order in the coupling constant, we prove that the higher spin Hamiltonians, with and without supersymmetry, are quadratic forms. Scattering amplitude structures emerge naturally in this framework and we relate the momentum space vertex in a supersymmetric higher spin theory to the corresponding vertex in the N=4 Yang-Mills theory.
In this paper we reconsider the Cachazo-He-Yuan construction (CHY) of the so called scattering amplitudes at one-loop, in order to obtain quadratic propagators. In theories with colour ordering the key ingredient is the redefinition of the Parke-Taylor factors. After classifying all the possible one-loop CHY-integrands we conjecture a new one-loop amplitude for the massless Bi-adjoint $Φ^3$ theory. The prescription directly reproduces the quadratic propagators from of the traditional Feynman approach.
We obtain the quadratic-in-spin terms of the conservative Hamiltonian describing the interactions of a binary of spinning bodies in General Relativity through $\mathcal{O}(G^2)$ and to all orders in velocity. Our calculation extends a recently-introduced framework based on scattering amplitudes and effective field theory to consider non-minimal coupling of the spinning objects to gravity. At the order that we consider, we establish the validity of the formula proposed in \cite{Bern:2020buy} that relates the impulse and spin kick in a scattering event to the eikonal phase.
It is well known that forward limits of tree-level amplitudes (and those trivalent diagrams they consist of) produce one-loop amplitudes and trivalent diagrams with propagators linear in the loop momentum. They naturally arise from one-loop worldsheet formulae, and an important open problem is how to recombine them into usual one-loop diagrams with quadratic propagators. In this paper, we study a new collection of worldsheet functions: generalized one-loop Parke-Taylor factors with tensor numerators, which are conjectured to serve as a basis for one-loop worldsheet functions with this nice pro…
Here we discuss color-kinematics duality for higher-derivative QCD-like amplitudes. We explicitly show that the duality still holds in this case and it can be instrumental in constructing the associated quadratic-gravity amplitudes by using the double-copy prescription. This allows one to drastically simplify calculations. We also evaluate some tree-level Compton scattering amplitudes in higher-derivative Yang-Mills and quadratic gravity coupled with matter. Furthermore, we illustrate the application of generalized unitarity method for both cases by studying a specific one-loop amplitude.
We sum up two- and three-point amplitudes in the chiral higher-spin theory over helicities and find that these quite manifestly have the form of invariant traces of the flat space chiral higher-spin algebra. We consider invariant traces of products of higher numbers of on-shell higher-spin fields and interpret these as higher-point scattering amplitudes. This construction closely mimics its anti-de Sitter space counterpart, which was considered some time ago and was confirmed holographically.
Following the proposal of arXiv:1312.6673, multi-particle scattering amplitudes are represented as conserved higher-spin charges. The advantage of such reformulation is that multi-particle amplitudes acquire the form of an integral of a closed form in the correspondence unifying usual space-time with the twistor-like spinor space. This allows one to identify seemingly different formulae for amplitudes in terms of twistor and space-time integrals. Example of tree MHV amplitudes of Yang-Mills theory is considered in detail. Our results are derived using unfolded dynamics formulation of massless …

The dynamical commutators of the light-front Poincaré algebra yield first order differential equations in the $p^+$ momenta for the interaction vertex operators. The homogeneous solution to the equation for the quartic vertex is studied. Consequences as regards the constructibility assumption of quartic higher spin amplitudes from cubic amplitudes are discussed. The existence of quartic contact interactions unrelated to cubic interactions by Poincaré symmetry indicates that the higher spin S-matrix is not constructible. Thus quartic amplitude based no-go results derived by BCFW recursion for M…
We use the formulation of conformal higher spin (CHS) theories in twistor space to study their tree-level scattering amplitudes, finding expressions for all three-point anti-MHV amplitudes and all MHV amplitudes involving positive helicity conformal gravity particles and two negative helicity higher spins. This provides the on-shell analogue for the covariant coupling of CHS fields to a conformal gravity background. We discuss the restriction of the theory to a ghost-free unitary subsector, analogous to restricting conformal gravity to general relativity with a cosmological constant. We study …
The problem of finding general quartic interaction terms between fields of higher helicities on the light-front is discussed from the point of view of calculating the corresponding amplitudes directly from the cubic vertices using BCFW recursion. Amplitude based no-go results that has appeared in the literature are reviewed and discussed and it is pointed out how they may perhaps be circumvented.
In this work we explore general leading singularities of one-loop amplitudes in higher-derivative Yang-Mills and quadratic gravity. These theories are known to possess propagators which contain quadratic and quartic momentum dependence, which leads to the presence of an unstable ghostlike resonance. However, unitarity cuts are not to be taken through unstable particles and therefore unitarity is still satisfied. On the other hand, this could engender issues when calculating leading singularities which are generalizations of unitarity cuts. Nevertheless, we will show with explicit examples how …
We consider weakly-coupled theories of massive higher-spin particles. This class of models includes, for instance, tree-level String Theory and Large-N Yang-Mills theory. The S-matrix in such theories is a meromorphic function obeying unitarity and crossing symmetry. We discuss the (unphysical) regime $s,t \gg 1$, in which we expect the amplitude to be universal and exponentially large. We develop methods to study this regime and show that the amplitude necessarily coincides with the Veneziano amplitude there. In particular, this implies that the leading Regge trajectory, $j(t)$, is asymptotic…
We demonstrate how three-point correlation functions of the free scalar U(N) model involving two scalar operators and one spin-$s$ conserved current organize themselves into corresponding AdS amplitudes involving two scalar and one spin-$s$ bulk to boundary propagators, coupled via the bulk gauge invariant interaction vertex. Our analysis relies on the general program advocated in hep-th/0308184 and some features of the embedding space formalism also play an important role.
In this paper we study tree-level amplitudes from higher-dimensional operators, including $F^3$ operator of gauge theory, and $R^2$, $R^3$ operators of gravity, in the Cachazo-He-Yuan formulation. As a generalization of the reduced Pfaffian in Yang-Mills theory, we find a new, gauge-invariant object that leads to gluon amplitudes with a single insertion of $F^3$, and gravity amplitudes by Kawai-Lewellen-Tye relations. When reduced to four dimensions for given helicities, the new object vanishes for any solution of scattering equations on which the reduced Pfaffian is non-vanishing. This intrig…
The properties of the high energy behavior of the scattering amplitude of massive, neutral and spinless particles in higher dimensional field theories are investigated. The axiomatic formulation of Lehmann, Symanzik and Zimmermann is adopted. The analyticity properties of the causal, the retarded and the advanced functions associated with the four point elastic amplitudes are studied. The analog of the Lehmann-Jost-Dyson representation is obtained in higher dimensional field theories. The generalized J-L-D representation is utilized to derive the t-plane analyticity property of the amplitude. …
We present a generalisation of the flavour-ordering method applied to the chiral nonlinear sigma model with any number of flavours. We use an extended Lagrangian with terms containing any number of derivatives, organised in a power-counting hierarchy. The method allows diagrammatic computations at tree-level with any number of legs at any order in the power-counting. Using an automated implementation of the method, we calculate amplitudes ranging from 12 legs at leading order, $\mathcal{O}(p^2)$, to 6 legs at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order, $\mathcal{O}(p^8)$. In addition to this, we ge…
We study static spherically symmetric black hole solutions with a linearly time-dependent scalar field and discuss their linear stability in the shift- and reflection-symmetric subclass of quadratic degenerate higher-order scalar-tensor (DHOST) theories. We present the explicit forms of the reduced system of background field equations for a generic theory within this subclass. Using the reduced equations of motion, we show that in several cases the solution is forced to be of the Schwarzschild or Schwarzschild-(anti-)de Sitter form. We consider odd-parity perturbations around general static sp…
We explore General Relativity solutions with stealth scalar hair in general quadratic higher-order scalar-tensor theories. Adopting the assumption that the scalar field has a constant kinetic term, we derive in a fully covariant manner a set of conditions under which the Euler-Lagrange equations allow General Relativity solutions as exact solutions in the presence of a general matter component minimally coupled to gravity. The scalar field possesses a nontrivial profile, which can be obtained by integrating the condition of constant kinetic term for each metric solution. We demonstrate the con…
In this paper, we calculate higher point tree level vector amplitudes propagating in AdS$_4$. We use bulk perturbation theory to compute tree level Witten diagrams. We show that when these amplitudes are written in momentum space, they reduce to relatively simple expressions. We explicitly compute four and five point correlators and also sketch a general strategy to compute the full six-point correlators.
We find various exact black hole solutions in the shift-symmetric subclass of the quadratic degenerate higher-order scalar-tensor (DHOST) theories with linearly time dependent scalar field whose kinetic term is constant. The exact solutions are the Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild-(anti-)de Sitter solutions, and the Schwarzschild-type solution with a deficit solid angle, which are accompanied by nontrivial scalar field regular at the black hole event horizon. We derive the conditions for the coupling functions in the DHOST Lagrangian that allow the exact solutions, clarify their compatibility w…
The $N$-dimensional Smorodinsky-Winternitz system is a maximally superintegrable and exactly solvable model, being subject of study from different approaches. The model has been demonstrated to be multiseparable with wavefunctions given by Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials. In this paper we present the complete symmetry algebra ${\cal SW}(N)$ of the system, which it is a higher-rank quadratic one containing the recently discovered Racah algebra ${\cal R}(N)$ as subalgebra. The substructures of distinct quadratic ${\cal Q}(3)$ algebras and their related Casimirs are also studied. In this way, fro…
We calculate graviton multi-point amplitudes in an anti-de Sitter black brane background for higher-derivative gravity of arbitrary order in numbers of derivatives. The calculations are performed using tensor graviton modes in a particular regime of comparatively high energies and large scattering angles. The regime simplifies the calculations but, at the same time, is well suited for translating these results into the language of the dually related gauge theory. After considering theories of up to eight derivatives, we generalize to even higher-derivative theories by constructing a "basis" fo…
In this follow up paper, we calculate higher point tree level graviton Witten diagrams in AdS$_4$ via bulk perturbation theory. We show that by rearranging the bulk to bulk graviton propagators, the calculations effectively reduce to the computation of a scalar factor. Analogous to the amplitudes for vector boson interactions we computed in the previous paper, scalar factors for the graviton exchange diagrams also become relatively simple when written in momentum space. We explicitly calculate higher point correlators and discuss how this momentum space formalism makes flat space and collinear…

On-shell amplitude methods allow to derive one-loop renormalization effects from just tree-level amplitudes, with no need of loop calculations. We derive a simple formula to obtain the anomalous dimensions of higher-dimensional operators from a product of tree-level amplitudes. We show how this works for dimension-6 operators of the Standard Model, providing explicit examples of the simplicity, elegance and efficiency of the method. Many anomalous dimensions can be calculated from the same Standard Model tree-level amplitude, displaying the attractive recycling aspect of the on-shell method. W…
