On-shell amplitude methods allow to derive one-loop renormalization effects from just tree-level amplitudes, with no need of loop calculations. We derive a simple formula to obtain the anomalous dimensions of higher-dimensional operators from a product of tree-level amplitudes. We show how this works for dimension-6 operators of the Standard Model, providing explicit examples of the simplicity, elegance and efficiency of the method. Many anomalous dimensions can be calculated from the same Standard Model tree-level amplitude, displaying the attractive recycling aspect of the on-shell method. With this method, it is possible to relate anomalous dimensions that in the Feynman approach arise from very different diagrams, and obtain non-trivial checks of their relative coefficients. We compare our results to those in the literature, where ordinary methods have been applied.
In this paper we investigate the renormalization of ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric quantum electrodynamics, regularized by higher derivatives, in the on-shell scheme. It is demonstrated that in this scheme the exact Novikov, Shifman, Vainshtein, and Zakharov (NSVZ) equation relating the $β$-function to the anomalous dimension of the matter superfields is valid in all orders of the perturbation theory. This implies that the on-shell scheme enters the recently constructed continuous set of NSVZ subtraction schemes. To verify this statement, we compare the anomalous dimension of the matter superfiel…
We evaluate the one-loop $β$ functions of all dimension 6 parity-preserving operators in the Abelian Higgs-Kibble model. No on-shell restrictions are imposed; and the (generalized) non-polynomial field redefinitions arising at one-loop order are fully taken into account. The operator mixing matrix is also computed, and its cancellation patterns explained as a consequence of the functional identities of the theory and power-counting conditions.
We describe the on-shell method to deriving the Renormalization Group (RG) evolution of Wilson coefficients of high dimensional operators at one loop, which is a necessary part in the on-shell construction of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT), and exceptionally efficient based on the amplitude basis in hand. The UV divergence is obtained by firstly calculating the coefficients of scalar bubble integrals by unitary cuts, then subtracting the IR divergence in the massless bubbles, which can be easily read from the collinear factors we obtained for the Standard Model fields. Examp…
The full off-shell one loop renormalization for all divergent amplitudes up to dimension 6 in the Abelian Higgs-Kibble model, supplemented with a maximally power counting violating higher-dimensional gauge-invariant derivative interaction $\sim g ~ ϕ^\dagger ϕ(D^μϕ)^\dagger D_μϕ$, is presented. This allows one to perform the complete renormalization of radiatively generated dimension 6 operators in the model at hand. We describe in details the technical tools required in order to disentangle the contribution to UV divergences parameterized by (generalized) non-polynomial field redefinitions. W…
Using on-shell methods, we present a new perturbative non-renormalization theorem for operator mixing in massless four-dimensional quantum field theories. By examining how unitarity cuts of form factors encode anomalous dimensions we show that longer operators are often restricted from renormalizing shorter operators at the first order where there exist Feynman diagrams. The theorem applies quite generally and depends only on the field content of the operators involved. We apply our theorem to operators of dimension five through seven in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory, including exa…
The Cachazo-He-Yuan (CHY) formula for on-shell scattering amplitudes are extended off-shell. The off-shell amplitudes are Möbius invariant, and have the same momentum poles as the on-shell amplitudes. The same technique is also used to obtain off-shell massive scalar and vector boson amplitudes.
The consistent recursive subtraction of UV divergences order by order in the loop expansion for spontaneously broken effective field theories with dimension-6 derivative operators is presented for an Abelian gauge group. We solve the Slavnov-Taylor identity to all orders in the loop expansion by homotopy techniques and a suitable choice of invariant field coordinates (named bleached variables) for the linearly realized gauge group. This allows one to disentangle the gauge-invariant contributions to off-shell 1-PI amplitudes from those associated with the gauge-fixing and (generalized) non-poly…
We introduce an on shell renormalization scheme in which the mass parameter of minimal MS scheme is replaced with the pole mass obtained from the loop order expansion of the pole mass in the MS scheme. As a consequence, the quartic coupling constant remains same as that of the MS scheme and the vacuum expectation value gets contributions from the one-particle-irreducible diagrams. We also show the renormalization group invariance of the pole mass in this scheme.

The off-shell one-loop renormalization of a Higgs effective field theory possessing a scalar potential $\sim\left(Φ^\daggerΦ-\frac{v^2}2\right)^N$ with $N$ arbitrary is presented. This is achieved by renormalizing the theory once reformulated in terms of two auxiliary fields $X_{1,2}$, which, due to the invariance under an extended Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin symmetry, are tightly constrained by functional identities. The latter allow in turn the explicit derivation of the mapping onto the original theory, through which the (divergent) multi-Higgs amplitude are generated in a purely algebraic fa…
In this review, we present a derivation of the on-shell renormalization conditions for scalar and fermionic fields in theories with and without parity conservation. We also discuss the specifics of Majorana fermions. Our approach only assumes a canonical form for the renormalized propagators and exploits the fact that the inverse propagators are non-singular in $\varepsilon = p^2 - m_n^2$, where $p$ is the external four-momentum and $m_n$ is a pole mass. In this way, we obtain full agreement with commonly used on-shell conditions. We also discuss how they are implemented in renormalization.
In this paper we consider tree-level gauge invariant off-shell amplitudes (Wilson line form factors) in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM. For the off-shell amplitudes with one leg off-shell we present a conjecture for their Grassmannian integral representation in spinor helicity, twistor and momentum twistor parameterizations. The presented conjecture is successfully checked against BCFW results for MHV$_n$, NMHV$_4$ and NMHV$_5$ off-shell amplitudes. We have also verified that our Grassmannian integral representation correctly reproduces soft (on-shell) limit for the off-shell gluon momentum. It is shown …
With the introduction of a spectral representation, the Schwinger-Dyson equation (SDE) for the fermion propagator is formulated in Minkowski space in QED. After imposing the on-shell renormalization conditions, analytic solutions for the fermion propagator spectral functions are obtained in four dimensions with a renormalizable version of the Gauge Technique anzatz for the fermion-photon vertex in the quenched approximation in the Landau gauge. Despite the limitations of this model, having an explicit solution provides a guiding example of the fermion propagator with the correct analytic struc…
We introduce a manifestly little group covariant on-shell superspace for massive particles in four dimensions using the massive spinor helicity formalism. This enables us to construct massive on-shell superfields and fully utilize on-shell symmetry considerations to derive all possible $\mathcal{N}=1$ three-particle amplitudes for particles of spin as high as one, as well as some simple amplitudes for particles of any spin. Throughout, the conceptual and computational simplicity of this approach is exhibited.
We review some of the modern approaches to scattering amplitude computations in QCD and their application to precision LHC phenomenology. We emphasise the usefulness of momentum twistor variables in parameterising general amplitudes.
We perform a comprehensive study of on-shell recursion relations for Born amplitudes in spontaneously broken gauge theories and identify the minimal shifts required to construct amplitudes with a given particle content and spin quantum numbers. We show that two-line or three-line shifts are sufficient to construct all amplitudes with five or more particles, apart from amplitudes involving longitudinal vector bosons or scalars, which may require at most five-line shifts. As an application, we revisit selection rules for multi-boson amplitudes using on-shell recursion and little-group transforma…
We study the renormalization group of generic effective field theories that include gravity. We follow the on-shell amplitude approach, which provides a simple and efficient method to extract anomalous dimensions avoiding complications from gauge redundancies. As an invaluable tool we introduce a modified helicity $\tilde{h}$ under which gravitons carry one unit instead of two. With this modified helicity we easily explain old and uncover new non-renormalization theorems for theories including gravitons. We provide complete results for the one-loop gravitational renormalization of a generic mi…

Scattering amplitudes in quantum field theory are independent of the field parameterization, which has a natural geometric interpretation as a form of `coordinate invariance.' Amplitudes can be expressed in terms of Riemannian curvature tensors, which makes the covariance of amplitudes under non-derivative field redefinitions manifest. We present a generalized geometric framework that extends this manifest covariance to $all$ allowed field redefinitions. Amplitudes satisfy a recursion relation that closely resembles the application of covariant derivatives to increase the rank of a tensor. Thi…
We study the three-particle and four-particle scattering amplitudes for an arbitrary, finite number of massive scalars, spinors and vectors by employing the on-shell massive spinor formalism. We consider the most general three-particle amplitudes with energy growing behavior at most of $\mathcal{O} (E)$. This is the special case of the requirement of tree unitarity, which states that the $N$-particle scattering amplitudes at tree-level should grow at most as $\mathcal{O} (E^{4-N})$ in the high energy hard scattering limit, i.e. at fixed non-zero angles. Then the factorizable parts of the four-…
Möbius invariance is used to construct gluon tree amplitudes in the Cachazo, He, and Yuan (CHY) formalism. If it is equally effective in steering the construction of off-shell tree amplitudes, then the S-matrix CHY theory can be used to replace the Lagrangian Yang-Mills theory. In the process of investigating this possibility, we find that the CHY formula can indeed be modified to obtain a Möbius invariant off-shell amplitude, but unfortunately this modified amplitude $M_P$ is not the Yang-Mills amplitude because it lacks gauge invariance. A complementary amplitude $M_Q$ must be added to resto…

We calculate the scattering $T$-matrix of $I=0$ $\bar K N-πΣ$ coupled channels taking a ladder sum of the Weinberg-Tomozawa interaction without on-shell factorization, regularizing three types of divergent meson-baryon loop functions by dimensional regularization and renormalizing them by introducing counter terms. We show that not only infinite but also finite renormalization is important in order for the renormalized physical scattering $T$-matrix to have the form of the Weinberg-Tomozawa interaction. The results with and without on-shell factorization are compared. The difference of the sca…
Off-shell Ward identities in non-abelian gauge theory continue to be a subject of active research, since they are, in general, inhomogeneous and their form depends on the chosen gauge-fixing procedure. For the three-gluon and four-gluon vertices, it is known that a relatively simple form of the Ward identity can be achieved using the pinch technique or, equivalently, the background-field method with quantum Feynman gauge. The latter is also the gauge-fixing underlying the string-inspired formalism, and here we use this formalism to derive the corresponding form of the Ward identity for the one…
We use on-shell methods to calculate tree-level effective field theory (EFT) amplitudes, with no reference to the EFT operators. Lorentz symmetry, unitarity and Bose statistics determine the allowed kinematical structures. As a by-product, the number of independent EFT operators simply follows from the set of polynomials in the Mandelstam invariants, subject to kinematical constraints. We demonstrate this approach by calculating several amplitudes with a massive, SM-singlet, scalar ($h$) or vector ($Z^\prime$) particle coupled to gluons. Specifically, we calculate $hggg$, $hhgg$ and $Z^\prime …
