As a simple cubic system with only one f electron per cerium ion, CeB6 is of model character to investigate the interplay of orbital phenomena with magnetism. It is also a textbook example of a compound that exhibits magnetically hidden order -- a low-temperature magnetic phase with ordered quadrupolar moments. It is difficult to identify the symmetry of such hidden-order states in common x-ray or neutron scattering experiments, as there is no signal in zero field, however alternative techniques like neutron diffraction in external field, resonant x-ray scattering, or ultrasonic investigations can be applied. Another possible method for characterizing hidden order is to look at the magnetic excitation spectrum, which carries the imprint of the multipolar interactions and the hidden order parameter in its dispersion relations. Using a specific candidate model, the dispersion is calculated and then compared to that measured with inelastic neutron scattering. Until recently, only a limited amount of data which show the presence of dispersing excitations measured along a few high-symmetry directions in an applied magnetic field were available. Early attempts to compare such calculations with experiments showed that only strongest modes at high-symmetry points could be identified. The present review of the most recent neutron-scattering results is intended to satisfy the need of more accurate inelastic neutron-scattering experiments as a function of field and temperature, giving us the opportunity to identify existing excitation branches in CeB6 and conclusively compare them with the theoretically predicted multipolar excitations.
The occurrence of a neutron resonance energy is a common feature of unconventional superconductors. In turn, the low-temperature incommensurate sharp peaks observed in the inelastic neutron scattering of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LSCO) correspond to four rods symmetrically distributed around $[π,π]$. Here it is shown that within the virtual-electron pair quantum liquid recently introduced the neutron resonance energy and the LSCO low-temperature incommensurate sharp peaks are generated by simple and closely related spinon processes. Our results indicate that in LSCO the neutron resonance energy…
The temperature-concentration phase diagram of the Si-doped spin-Peierls compound CuGeO$_{3}$ is investigated by means of neutron scattering and muon spin rotation spectroscopy in order to determine the microscopic distribution of the magnetic and lattice dimerised regions as a function of doping. The analysis of the zero-field muon spectra has confirmed the spatial inhomogeneity of the staggered magnetisation that characterises the antiferromagnetic superlattice peaks observed with neutrons. In addition, the variation of the macroscopic order parameter with doping can be understood by conside…
Single crystals of the lightly-doped spin-Peierls system Cu(1-x)Cd(x)GeO3 have been studied using bulk susceptibility, x-ray diffraction, and inelastic neutron scattering techniques. We investigate the triplet gap in the magnetic excitation spectrum of this quasi-one dimensional quantum antiferromagnet, and its relation to the spin-Peierls dimerisation order parameter. We employ two different theoretical forms to model the inelastic neutron scattering cross section and chi''(Q,omega), and show the sensitivity of the gap energy to the choice of chi''(Q,omega). We find that a finite gap exists a…
The dynamical spin response of doped two-leg ladder antiferromagnets is investigated based on the fermion-spin approach. Our calculations clearly demonstrate a crossover from the incommensurate antiferromagnetism in the weak interchain coupling regime to commensurate spin fluctuation in the strong interchain coupling regime. In particular, the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate extracted from the commensurate spin fluctuation decreases exponentially with decreasing temperatures. The behaviors of the spin dynamics in the strong coupling regime are quantitatively close to the experimental resu…
An Eu NMR study in the ferromagnetic phase of pure and Gd doped EuO was performed. A complete description of the NMR lineshape of pure EuO allowed for the influence of doping EuO with Gd impurities to be highlighted. The presence of a temperature dependent static magnetic inhomogeneity in Gd doped EuO was demonstrated by studying the temperature dependence of the lineshapes. The results suggest that the inhomogeneity in 0.6% Gd doped EuO is linked to colossal magnetoresistance. The measurement of the spin-lattice relaxation times as a function of temperature led to the determination of the val…
An excitonic magnet hosts a condensate of spin-triplet excitons composed of conduction-band electrons and valence-band holes, and may be described by the two-orbital Hubbard model. When the Hamiltonian has the nearest-neighbor interorbital hopping integrals with $d$-wave symmetry and the number of electrons is slightly away from half filling, the $\boldsymbol{k}$-space spin texture appears in the excitonic phase with a broken time-reversal symmetry. We then show that, applying electric field to this doped excitonic magnet along a particular direction, a pure spin current emerges along its orth…
We investigated the far- and mid-infrared reflectivity (20-6000 wavenumber) of several pure and doped CuGeO3 single crystals. The b-axis and c-axis optical response is presented for different temperatures between 4 K and 300 K. Moreover, a full group theoretical analysis of the lattice vibrational modes of CuGeO3 in the high temperature undistorted phase as well as in the low temperature spin-Peierls phase is reported and compared to the experimental results. We observe the activation of zone boundary phonons along the b axis of the crystal below the spin-Peierls transition temperature.
Inelastic Neutron Scattering (INS) data in LSCO, YBCO and Bi2212 are discussed. In the literature, the INS spectra remain far from being comprehensively understood. We show that local (Q-integrated) susceptibility data and the energy dependence of the spin susceptibility at antiferromagnetic vector, Q = (p,p), can be interpreted by using the phase diagram for hole-doped cuprates. We analyze also the origin of the resonant peak which relates to the order parameter for long-range phase coherence in hole-doped cuprates. Thus, we present an interpretation of neutron data in LSCO, YBCO and Bi2212 p…
We report a study of the low-temperature thermal conductivity (κ) of pure and Zn-doped LiCu_2O_2 single crystals. The κ(T) of pure LiCu_2O_2 single crystal shows a double-peak behavior, with two peaks locating at 48 K and 14 K, respectively. The different dependences of the peaks on the Zn concentration indicate that the high-T peak is likely due to the phonon transport while the low-T one is attributed to the magnon transport in the spin spiral ordering state. In addition, the magnetic field can gradually suppress the low-T peak but does not affect the high-T one; this further confirms that t…
Elastic and inelastic neutron scattering experiments have been performed in a La$_{0.94}$Sr$_{0.06}$MnO$_3$ untwinned crystal, which exhibits an antiferromagnetic canted magnetic structure with ferromagnetic layers. The elastic small q scattering exhibits a modulation with an anisotropic q-dependence. It can be pictured by ferromagnetic inhomogeneities or polarons with a platelike shape, the largest size ($\approx17Å$) and largest inter-polaron distance ($\approx$ 38$Å$) being within the ferromagnetic layers. Comparison with observations performed on Ca-doped samples, which show the growth of …
The thermal conductivity κof Cu_1-xMg_xGeO_3 is measured in magnetic fields up to 16 T. At the transition field H_c to the high-field incommensurate (I) phase, κabruptly decreases. While κof the pure CuGeO_3 is enhanced with the application of higher magnetic fields, an anomalous plateau feature shows up in the κ(H) profile in the I phase of the Mg-doped samples which includes antiferromagnetic ordering (I-AF phase). With the help of specific heat data, taken supplementally for the identical samples, the above features are well understood that phonons are strongly scattered by spin solitons an…
Thermal conductivity κis measured at very low temperatures down to 0.28 K for pure and Mg-doped CuGeO_3 single crystals. The doped samples carry larger amount of heat than the pure sample at the lowest temperature. This is because antiferromagnetic magnons appear in the doped samples and are responsible for the additional heat conductivity, while κof the pure sample represents phonon conductivity at such low temperatures. The maximum energy of the magnon is estimated to be much lower than the spin-Peierls-gap energy. The result presents the first example that κat very low temperatures probes t…
The intermediate-valence compound SmB6 is a well-known Kondo insulator, in which hybridization of itinerant 5d electrons with localized 4f electrons leads to a transition from metallic to insulating behavior at low temperatures. Recent studies suggest that SmB6 is a topological insulator, with topological metallic surface states emerging from a fully insulating hybridized bulk band structure. Here we locally probe the bulk magnetic properties of pure and 0.5 % Fe-doped SmB6 by muon spin rotation/relaxation methods. Below 6 K the Fe impurity induces simultaneous changes in the bulk local magnet…
We investigate the occurrence of singlet bound states in the Raman spectrum of dimerized spin 1/2 chains by Exact Diagonalization and Density Matrix Renormalization Group techniques. We predict that several bulk $δ$-peaks could be observed in pure systems. Furthermore, we show that new low energy lines arise from non-magnetic impurity doping. These features are interpreted in terms of soliton-antisoliton and soliton-impurity bound states respectively. Energies and spectral weights associated with these bound states are sensitive to lattice relaxation effects. Our results are discussed in the c…
We report inelastic neutron scattering measurements that provide a distinct dynamical "fingerprint" for the multiferroic ground state of 3.5% Ga-doped CuFeO_2. The complex ground state is stabilized by the displacement of the oxygen atoms, which are also responsible for the multiferroic coupling predicted by Arima. By comparing the observed and calculated spectrum of spin excitations, we conclude that the magnetic ground state is a distorted screw-type spin configuration that requires a mechanism for magnetoelectric coupling different from the generally accepted spin-current model.
We studied the nano-scale structure of the short-range incommensurate magnetic order in La1.5Sr0.5CoO4 by elastic neutron scattering. We find that magnetic diffuse scattering is isotropic in the a-b plane, in contrast with the naive expectation based on the popular stripe model. Indeed, charge segregation into lines favoring certain lattice direction(s) would facilitate linear stacking faults in an otherwise robust antiferromagnetism of un-doped material, leading to anisotropic disorder, with a characteristic symmetry pattern present in the neutron scattering data.
We show that the strain-induced resistivity anisotropy in the tetragonal state of the representative underdoped Fe-arsenides BaFe$_2$As$_2$, Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ and Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ is independent of disorder over a wide range of defect and impurity concentrations. This result demonstrates that the anisotropy in the in-plane resistivity in the paramagnetic orthorhombic state of this material is not due to elastic scattering from anisotropic defects, and is most easily understood in terms of an intrinsic anisotropy in the electronic structure.
This paper reviews studies of the spatial modulation of spin in La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO) through neutron-scattering measurements of the elastic magnetic peaks, with emphasis on Zn-doped LSCO. The elastic incommensurate magnetic peaks can be categorized in two classes with respect to the temperature dependence. Nd-doped LSCO, La2CuO4+y and LSCO with x ~ 1/8 exhibit an ordinary power law behavior. On the other hand, Zn-doped LSCO and LSCO with x = 0.02-0.07 show an exponential temperature dependence, and the correlation lengths stay short. This discrepancy can be attributed to the difference in the m…
We report on microscopic study of the ferromagnetism enhancement in the Ru doped ferromagnetic superconductor (FM SC) UCoGe. For that purpose, two single crystals with composition UCo0.97Ru0.03Ge and UCo0.88Ru0.12Ge were prepared. Both single crystals were investigated by polarized neutron diffraction (PND) at low temperatures in magnetic fields and the latter one also by the soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) method. UCo0.96Ru0.03Ge and UCo0.88Ru0.12Ge have been found ordering ferromagnetically below the Curie temperature TC = 6 K and 8.5 K, respectively, which are considerable hig…
We study the presence of ferromagnetism in the phase diagram of the two-dimensional honeycomb lattice close to half-filling (graphene) as a function of the strength of the Coulomb interaction and doping. We show that exchange interactions between Dirac fermions can stabilize a ferromagnetic phase at low doping when the coupling is sufficiently large. In clean systems, the zero temperature phase diagram shows both first order and second order transition lines and two distinct ferromagnetic phases: one phase with only one type of carriers (either electrons or holes) and another with two types of…
We present a systematic investigation of the antiferromagnetic ordering and structural distortion for the series of Ba(Fe{1-x}Ru{x})2As2 compounds (0 <= x <= 0.246). Neutron and x-ray diffraction measurements demonstrate that, unlike for the electron-doped compounds, the structural and magnetic transitions remain coincident in temperature. Both the magnetic and structural transitions are gradually suppressed with increased Ru concentration and coexist with superconductivity. For samples that are superconducting, we find strong competition between superconductivity, the antiferromagnetic orderi…
The leading electronic interactions governing the local physics of the CE phase of half-doped manganites are extracted from correlated ab initio calculations performed on an embedded cluster. The electronic structure of the low-energy states is dominated by double exchange configurations and O-2$p_σ$ to Mn-3d charge transfer configurations. The model spectra of both a purely magnetic non-symmetric Heisenberg Hamiltonian involving a magnetic oxygen and two non-symmetric double exchange models are compared to the \textit{ab initio} one. While a satisfactory agreement between the Heisenberg spect…
We perform spin-polarized two-dimensional angular correlation of annihilation radiation (2D-ACAR) calculations for the recently predicted ZrCo$_2$Sn-Weyl Heusler compound within the density functional theory using the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and its extension GGA+U. We confirm that within the GGA+U method, a pair of Weyl-points are revealed, and that by doping with Niobium, for the composition Nb$_{0.3}$Zr$_{0.7}$Co$_2$Sn, the Weyl points are reaching the Fermi level. Our 2D-ACAR results indicate the existence of the Weyl points, however, within the present calculation, it is …
Neutron elastic and inelastic scattering measurements have been performed in order to investigate the spin structure and the magnetic excitations in the impurity-induced antiferromagnetic ordered phase of the doped spin gap system Tl(Cu$_{1-x}$Mg$_x$)Cl$_3$ with $x=0.03$. The magnetic Bragg reflections indicative of the ordering were observed at ${\pmb Q}=(h, 0, l)$ with integer $h$ and odd $l$ below $T_{\rm N}=3.45$ K. It was found that the spin structure of the impurity-induced antiferromagnetic ordered phase on average in Tl(Cu$_{1-x}$Mg$_x$)Cl$_3$ with $x=0.03$ is the same as that of the f…
Low dimensional spin-1/2 systems with antiferromagnetic interactions display very innovative features, driven by strong quantum fluctuations. In particular, geometrical effects or competing magnetic interactions can give rise to the formation of a spin gap between the singlet ground state and the first excited triplet state. In this chapter, we focus on the numerical investigation of such systems by Exact Diagonalisation methods and some extensions of it including a simultaneous mean-field treatment of some perturbative couplings. After a presentation of the Lanczos algorithm and a description…
In-plane and out-of-plane thermal conductivities (κ_{ab} and κ_{c}) are measured on single crystals of pure, 1%-hole-doped, and 1%-Zn-doped La_{2}CuO_{4}. The roles of magnons and the spin stripes in the heat transport in these samples are discussed. Comparison with the heat transport in CuGeO_{3}, which shows similar κ(T) behavior as that of La_{2}CuO_{4}, gives us a lesson of how the heat transport can probe the difference in the spin ground state.
We studied electron spin resonance in a quantum magnet NiCl2-4SC(NH2)2, demonstrating a field-induced quantum phase transition from a quantum-disordered phase to an antiferromagnet. We observe two branches of the antiferromagnetic resonance of the ordered phase, one of them has a gap and the other is a Goldstone mode with zero frequency at a magnetic field along the four-fold axis. This zero frequency mode acquires a gap at a small tilting of the magnetic field with respect to this direction. The upper gap was found to be reduced in the doped compound Ni(Cl(1-x)Br(x))2-4SC(NH2)2 with $x=0.21$.…
We have measured the spin-wave spectrum of the half-doped bilayer manganite Pr(Ca,Sr)2Mn2O7 in its spin, charge, and orbital ordered phase. The measurements, which extend throughout the Brillouin zone and cover the entire one-magnon spectrum, are compared critically with spin-wave calculations for different models of the electronic ground state. The data are described very well by the Goodenough model, which has weakly interacting ferromagnetic zig-zag chains in the CE-type arrangement. A model that allows ferromagnetic dimers to form within the zigzags is inconsistent with the data. The analy…
Inelastic neutron scattering studies in single crystals of TbInO3 and TbIn0.95Mn0.05O3 with nearly-triangular antiferromagnetic lattice are reported. At low energies, a broad and apparently gapless continuum of magnetic excitations, located at the triangular lattice (TL) Brillouin zone boundary, is observed. The data are well described by the uncorrelated nearest-neighbor valence bonds model. At higher energies, a broad excitation branch dispersing from the TL zone boundary is observed. No signs of static magnetic order are found down to the temperatures two orders of magnitude smaller than th…
We have probed the Landau levels of nodal quasi-particles by tunneling along a nodal direction of (110) oriented YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ thin films with a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the $CuO_2$ planes, and parallel to the film's surface. In optimally doped films and at low temperature, finite energy nodal states are clearly observed in films thinner than the London penetration depth. Above a well defined temperature the order parameter reverts to a pure \emph{d}-wave symmetry.
We address the role of non-local Coulomb correlations and short-range magnetic fluctuations in the high-temperature phase of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ within state-of-the-art spectroscopic and first-principles theoretical methods. Introducing a novel cluster dynamical mean field scheme, we compute momentum-resolved spectral functions, which we find to be in excellent agreement with angle-resolved photoemission spectra. We show that while short-range antiferromagnetic fluctuations are crucial to account for the electronic properties of the material even in the high-temperature paramagnetic phase, long-rang…
Phases and phase transitions in pure and doped spin-Peierls system CuGeO_3 are considered on the basis of a Landau-theory. In particular we discuss the critical behaviour, the soliton width and the low temperature specific heat of the incommensurate phase. We show, that dilution leads always to the destruction of long range order in this phase, which is replaced by an algebraic decay of correlations if the disorder is weak.
We present structural studies of V$_{1-x}$Cr$_x$O$_2$ (pure, 0.7% and 2.5% Cr doped) compounds at room temperature in a diamond anvil cell for pressures up to 20 GPa using synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction. All the samples studied show a persistence of the monoclinic $M_1$ symmetry between 4 and 12 GPa. Above 12 GPa, the monoclinic $M_1$ symmetry changes to isostructural $M_x$ phase (space group $P2_1/c$) with a significant anisotropy in lattice compression of the $b$-$c$ plane of the $M_{1}$ phase. This behavior can be reconciled invoking the pressure induced charge-delocalization.
Cu1-xMgxGeO3 undergoes a first-order phase transition at a critical concentration xc between an antiferromagnetic (AF) state on dimerized lattice (D-AF) and an AF Neel state on undistorted uniform lattice (U-AF). Previous magnetic susceptibility measurements showed xc = 0.023 while a recent neutron scattering study reported xc = 0.027 +- 0.001. The present critical scattering due to antiferromagnetic fluctuations near the superlattice reflection (0,1,1/2) unambiguously determines xc = 0.028 +- 0.001 at TN = 3.4 ~ 4 K. Also at T = 1.3 K, the phase boundary was determined as xc = 0.028 +- 0.001 …
Insulating 5d3 La3OsO7 and hole doped La2.8Ca0.2OsO7 materials featuring well separated pseudo-one-dimensional zig-zag chains of corner-sharing OsO6 octahedra have been synthesized and their magnetic and electrical transport properties characterized. Long range magnetic order between the antiferromagnetic chains is determined with a propagation vector k = 1/2, 1/2, 0 and TN = 45 and 53 K for the parent and doped materials. An Os5+ moment of 1.7(1) μB for La3OsO7 and 1.2(2) μB for La2.8Ca0.2OsO7 is refined. The long range magnetic structure is compared to the few currently known for isostructur…
The intermetallic compound LaAgSb2 displays two charge-density-wave (CDW) transitions, which were detected with measurements of electrical resistivity (rho), magnetic susceptibility, and X-ray scattering; the upper transition takes place at T1 approx. 210 K, and it is accompanied by a large anomaly in rho(T), whereas the lower transition is marked by a much more subtle anomaly at T2 approx. 185 K. We studied the effect of hydrostatic pressure (P) on the formation of the upper CDW state in pure and doped La1-xRxAgSb2 (R = Ce, Nd) compounds, by means of measurements of rho(T) for P < 23 kbar. We…
We present reliable many-body calculations for the t-t'-t''-U Hubbard model that explain in detail the results of recent angle-resolved photoemission experiments on electron-doped high-temperature superconductors. The origin of the pseudogap is traced to two-dimensional antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations whose calculated temperature dependent correlation length also agrees with recent neutron scattering measurements. We make specific predictions for photoemission, for neutron scattering and for the phase diagram.
In this paper we explore the incommensurate spatial modulation of spin-spin correlations as the intrinsic property of the doped Mott insulator, described by the $t-J$ model. We show that such an incommensurability is a direct manifestation of the phase string effect introduced by doped holes in both one- and two-dimensional cases. The magnetic incommensurate peaks of dynamic spin susceptibility in momentum space are in agreement with the neutron-scattering measurement of cuprate superconductors in both position and doping dependence. In particular, this incommensurate structure can naturally r…
We use inelastic neutron scattering with spin polarization analysis to study the magnetic excitations in the normal and superconducting states of YBa2Cu3O6.9. Polarization analysis allows us to determine the spin polarization of the magnetic excitations and to separate them from phonon scattering. In the normal state, we find unambiguous evidence of magnetic excitations over the 10-60meV range of the experiment with little polarization dependence to the excitations. In the superconducting state, the magnetic response is enhanced near the "resonance energy" and above. At lower energies, 10<E<30…
Recent neutron scattering and nuclear magnetic resonance experiments have revealed that the low temperature phase of doped V_{2-y}O_3 is an itinerant antiferromagnet with a helical spin structure. We use a band structure calculation as the point of departure to show that these experiments are in agreement with mean field results for an Overhauser spin-density wave state. The influences of a finite life-time and of dilute magnetic impurities are discussed.
The nickelate compound Y_{2}BaNiO_{5} is a spin-1 Haldane-gap antiferromagnet. The compound is doped with holes on replacing the off-chain Y^{3+} ions by Ca^{2+} ions. Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiments reveal the existence of sub-gap states on doping. A recent INS experiment provides evidence for an incommensurate double-peaked structure factor S(q) corresponding to the sub-gap states. In this paper, we formulate a microscopic theory for the origin of the incommensurate peak.
Superlattice of spin vortices has been proposed in an earlier article as an alternative to the stripe interpretation of spin modulations in 1/8-doped lanthanum cuprates. The present article addresses several additional characteristics of the spin vortex lattice, namely: (i) the nature of extended charge states; (ii) the position of neutron spin peaks as a function of doping; and (iii) the absence of higher order spin harmonics. All these characteristics afford straightforward connection to the experimental results produced by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, resistivity measurements,…
We report anisotropic dc magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$, electrical resistivity $ρ(T)$, and heat capacity $C(T)$ measurements on the single crystals of CaFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$ for $x$ = 0 and 0.06. Large sized single crystals were grown by the high temperature solution method with Sn as the solvent. For the pure compound with $x$ = 0, a high temperature transition at 170 K is observed which is attributed to a combined spin density wave (SDW) ordering and a structural phase transition. On the other hand, for the Co-doped samples for $x$ = 0.06, the SDW transition is suppressed while supercondu…
The phase diagram for hole-doped cuprates is discussed. By examining some recent inelastic neutron scattering data obtained on hole-doped cuprates we conclude that the coherent gap in hole-doped cuprates has most likely the magnetic origin and scales with Tc, on average, as 2Delta/kTc = 5.4.
Sr2IrO4 is characterized by a large spin-orbit coupling, which gives rise to bands with strongly entangled spin and orbital characters, called J=1/2 and J=3/2. We use light-polarization dependent ARPES to study directly the orbital character of these bands and fully map out their dispersion. We observe bands in very good agreement with our cluster dynamical mean-field theory calculations. We show that the J=1/2 band, the closest to the Fermi level Ef, is dominated by dxz character along kx and dyz along ky. This is actually in agreement with an isotropic J=1/2 character on average, but this la…
We investigate the spin-wave excitations in the spin-density wave state of doped iron pnictides within a five-orbital model. We find that the excitations along ($π, 0$)$\rightarrow$($π, π$) are very sensitive to the doping whereas they do not exhibit a similar sensitivity along ($0, 0$) $\rightarrow$ ($π, 0$). Secondly, anisotropy in the excitations around ($π, 0$) with an elliptical shape grows on moving towards the hole-doped region for low energy, whereas it decreases for the high-energy excitations on the contrary. Thirdly, spin-wave spectral weight shifts towards the low-energy region on …
BaMn$_{2}$As$_{2}$ is an antiferromagnetic insulator where a metal-insulator transition occurs with hole doping via the substitution of Ba with K. The metal-insulator transition causes only a small suppression of the Néel temperature ($T_\mathrm{N}$) and the ordered moment, suggesting that doped holes interact weakly with the Mn spin system. Powder inelastic neutron scattering measurements were performed on three different powder samples of Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Mn$_{2}$As$_{2}$ with $x=$0, 0.125 and 0.25 to study the effect of hole doping and metallization on the spin dynamics of these compounds. …
The interfacial properties of Y0.6Pr0.4Ba2Cu3O7/La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 superlattices have been studied by resonant soft x-rays and diffuse scattered neutrons. Linearly polarized X-ray absorption at Cu L3 -edge reveals dramatic interfacial changes from the bulk including charge transfer between LCMO and YPBCO and an orbital reconstruction in the interface CuO2 plane. The similarities to the case of zero Pr-doping are due to the strongly hybridized covalent bond between Cu and Mn. However, reduced charge transfer and a more bulk-like interfacial orbital occupation are observed and related to the effect …
Muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) and magnetic susceptibility measurements have been performed on the pure and diluted spin 1/2 kagomé system (Cu$_x$Zn$_{1-x}$)$_{3}$V$_{2}$O$_7$(OH)$_{2}$ 2H$_2$O. In the pure $x=1$ system we found a slowing down of Cu spin fluctuations with decreasing temperature towards $T \sim 1$ K, followed by slow and nearly temperature-independent spin fluctuations persisting down to $T$ = 50 mK, indicative of quantum fluctuations. No indication of static spin freezing was detected in either of the pure ($x$=1.0) or diluted samples. The observed magnitude of fluctuating field…
Neutron-diffraction experiments have been carried out on U(Pt1-xPdx)3 single crystals (x<= 0.05). The small-moment antiferromagnetic order (SMAF) reported for pure UPt3 is robust upon doping and persists till at least x= 0.005. The ordered moment grows from 0.018(2) mB/U-atom for pure UPt3 to 0.048(8) mB/U-atom for x= 0.005. The Neel temperature, TN, is approximately 6 K and does not vary with Pd contents. The order parameter for the SMAF has an unusual quasi-linear temperature variation. For x>= 0.01 a large moment antiferromagnetic phase (LMAF) is found. For this phase at optimum doping (x= …
We report high-resolution neutron scattering measurements of the low energy spin fluctuations of KFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$, the end member of the hole-doped Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ family with only hole pockets, above and below its superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ ($\sim$ 3.5 K). Our data reveals clear spin fluctuations at the incommensurate wave vector ($0.5\pmδ$, 0, $L$), ($δ$ = 0.2)(1-Fe unit cell), which exhibit $L$-modulation peaking at $L=0.5$. Upon cooling to the superconducting state, the incommensurate spin fluctuations gradually open a spin-gap and form a sharp spin resonance…
The collective magnetic excitations in the spin-orbit Mott insulator (Sr$_{1-x}$La$_x$)$_2$IrO$_4$ ($x=0,\,0.01,\,0.04,\, 0.1$) were investigated by means of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering. We report significant magnon energy gaps at both the crystallographic and antiferromagnetic zone centers at all doping levels, along with a remarkably pronounced momentum-dependent lifetime broadening. The spin-wave gap is accounted for by a significant anisotropy in the interactions between $J_\text{eff}=1/2$ isospins, thus marking the departure of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ from the essentially isotropic Heisenbe…
We report a comprehensive small angle neutron scattering study (SANS) of the magnetic phase diagram of the doped semiconductor Fe_{1-x}Co_{x}Si for x=0.2 and 0.25. For magnetic field parallel to the neutron beam we observe a six-fold intensity pattern under field-cooling, which identifies the A-phase of Fe_{1-x}Co_{x}Si as a skyrmion lattice. The regime of the skyrmion lattice is highly hysteretic and extents over a wide temperature range, consistent with the site disorder of the Fe and Co atoms. Our study identifies Fe_{1-x}Co_{x}Si is a second material after MnSi in which a skyrmion lattice …
We present neutron scattering data on two single crystals of the high temperature superconductor La2-x(Ca,Sr)xCaCu2O6+delta. The Ca0.1-doped crystal exhibits a long-range antiferromagnetically ordered ground state. In contrast, the Sr0.15-doped crystal exhibits short-range antiferromagnetic order as well as weak superconductivity. In both crystals antiferromagnetic correlations are commensurate; however, some results on the Ca0.1-doped crystal resemble those on the spin-glass phase of La2-xSrxCuO4, where magnetic correlations became incommensurate. In addition, both crystals show a structural …
Inelastic neutron scattering measurements on Ba(Fe$_{0.963}$Ni$_{0.037}$)$_2$As$_2$ manifest a neutron spin resonance in the superconducting state with anisotropic dispersion within the Fe layer. Whereas the resonance is sharply peaked at Q$_{AFM}$ along the orthorhombic a axis, the resonance disperses upwards away from Q$_{AFM}$ along the b axis. In contrast to the downward dispersing resonance and hour-glass shape of the spin excitations in superconducting cuprates, the resonance in electron-doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$ compounds possesses a magnon-like upwards dispersion.
Stripe fluctuations in La2NiO4.17 have been studied by 139La NMR using the field and temperature dependence of the linewidth and relaxation rates. In the formation process of the stripes the NMR line intensity is maximal below 230K, starts to diminish around 140K, disappears around 50K and recovers at 4K. These results are shown to be consistent with, but completely complementary to neutron measurements, and to be generic for oxygen doped nickelates and underdoped cuprates.
The temperature and magnetic-field (H) dependences of thermal conductivity (κ) of Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ} (Bi2212) are systematically measured for a broad doping range by using both pure Bi2212 single crystals with tuned oxygen contents and Bi_2Sr_2Ca_{1-x}Dy_xCu_2O_{8+δ} (Dy-Bi2212) single crystals with different Dy contents x. In the underdoped samples, the quasiparticle (QP) peak below T_c is strongly suppressed, indicating strong QP scattering by impurities or oxygen defects, whereas the phonon conductivity is enhanced in moderately Dy-doped samples and a phonon peak at 10 K is observed for …
In this article we present a neutron diffraction in-situ study of the thermal evolution and high-temperature structure of layered cobaltites Y(Ba, Sr)Co2 O5+δ. Neutron thermodiffractograms and magnetic susceptibility measurements are reported in the temperature range 20 K <= T <= 570 K, as well as high resolution neutron diffraction experiments at selected temperatures. Starting from the as-synthesized samples with δ ~ 0.5, we show that the room temperature phases remain stable up to 550 K, where they start loosing oxygen and transform to a vacancy-disordered "112" structure with tetragonal sy…
The magnetic structures and the magnetic phase transitions in the Mn-doped orthoferrite TbFeO$_3$ studied using neutron powder diffraction are reported. Magnetic phase transitions are identified at $T^\mathrm{Fe/Mn}_N \approx$ 295~K where a paramagnetic-to-antiferromagnetic transition occurs in the Fe/Mn sublattice, $T^\mathrm{Fe/Mn}_{SR} \approx$ 26~K where a spin-reorientation transition occurs in the Fe/Mn sublattice and $T^\mathrm{R}_N \approx$ 2~K where Tb-ordering starts to manifest. At 295~K, the magnetic structure of the Fe/Mn sublattice in TbFe$_{0.5}$Mn$_{0.5}$O$_3$ belongs to the ir…
The in-plane oxygen vibrations in La2NiO4 are investigated for several hole-doping concentrations both theoretically and experimentally via inelastic neutron scattering. Using an inhomogeneous Hartree-Fock plus RPA numerical method in a two-dimensional Peierls-Hubbard model, it is found that the doping induces stripe ordering of localized charges, and that the strong electron-lattice coupling causes the in-plane oxygen modes to split into two subbands. This result agrees with the phonon band splitting observed by inelastic neutron scattering in La2-xSrxNiO4. Predictions of strong electron-latt…
