We find general conditions under which Lipschitz-free spaces over metric spaces are isomorphic to their infinite direct $\ell_1$-sum and exhibit several applications. As examples of such applications we have that Lipschitz-free spaces over balls and spheres of the same finite dimensions are isomorphic, that the Lipschitz-free space over $\mathbb{Z}^d$ is isomorphic to its $\ell_1$-sum, or that the Lipschitz-free space over any snowflake of a doubling metric space is isomorphic to $\ell_1$. Moreover, following new ideas from [E. Bruè, S. Di Marino and F. Stra, Linear Lipschitz and $C^1$ extension operators through random projection, arXiv:1801.07533] we provide an elementary self-contained proof that Lipschitz-free spaces over doubling metric spaces are complemented in Lipschitz-free spaces over their superspaces and they have BAP. Everything, including the results about doubling metric spaces, is explored in the more comprehensive setting of $p$-Banach spaces, which allows us to appreciate the similarities and differences of the theory between the cases $p<1$ and $p=1$.
We prove the result stated in the title. This provides a first example of an infinite-dimensional Banach space whose Lipschitz free space is isomorphic to the free space of a compact set.
We prove that, for each Banach space $X$ which is isomorphic to its hyperplanes, the Lipschitz-free spaces over $X$ and over its sphere are isomorphic.
We show that the class of subspaces of c_0 is stable under Lipschitz isomorphisms. The main corollary is that any Banach space which is Lipschitz isomorphic to c_0 is linearly isomorphic to c_0.
Two methods of constructing infinitely many isomorphically distinct $\Cal L_p$-spaces have been published. In this article we show that these constructions yield very different spaces and in the process develop methods for dealing with these spaces from the isomorphic viewpoint. We use these methods to give a complete isomorphic classification of the spaces $R_p^α$ constructed by Bourgain, Rosenthal, and Schechtman and to show that $X_p\otimes X_p$ is not isomorphic to a complemented subspace of any $R_p^α.$
We prove that the Lipschitz-free space over a Banach space $X$ of density $κ$, denoted by $\mathcal{F}(X)$, is linearly isomorphic to its $\ell_1$-sum $\left(\bigoplus_κ\mathcal{F}(X)\right)_{\ell_1}$. This provides an extension of a previous result from Kaufmann in the context of non-separable Banach spaces. Further, we obtain a complete classification of the spaces of real-valued Lipschitz functions that vanish at $0$ over a $\mathcal{L}_p$-space. More precisely, we establish that, for every $1\leq p\leq \infty$, if $X$ is a $\mathcal{L}_p$-space of density $κ$, then $\mathrm{Lip}_0(X)$ is e…
We give several structural results concerning the Lipschitz-free spaces $\mathcal F(M)$, where $M$ is a metric space. We show that $\mathcal F(M)$ contains a complemented copy of $\ell_1(Γ)$, where $Γ=\text{dens}(M)$. If $\mathcal N$ is the net in a finite dimensional Banach space $X$, we show that $\mathcal F(\mathcal N)$ is isomorphic to its square. If $X$ contains a complemented copy of $\ell_p, c_0$ then $\mathcal F(\mathcal N)$ is isomorphic to its $\ell_1$-sum. Finally, we prove that for all $X\cong C(K)$ spaces $\mathcal F(\mathcal N)$ are mutually isomorphic spaces with a Schauder basi…
We show that, given a Banach space $X$, the Lipschitz-free space over $X$, denoted by $\mathcal{F}(X)$, is isomorphic to $(\sum_{n=1}^\infty \mathcal{F}(X))_{\ell_1}$. Some applications are presented, including a non-linear version of Pelczyśki's decomposition method for Lipschitz-free spaces and the identification up to isomorphism between $\mathcal{F}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ and the Lipschitz-free space over any compact metric space which is locally bi-Lipschitz embeddable into $\mathbb{R}^n$ and which contains a subset that is Lipschitz equivalent to the unit ball of $\mathbb{R}^n$. We also show tha…
The nonlinear geometry of operator spaces has recently started to be investigated. Many notions of nonlinear embeddability have been introduced so far, but, as noticed before by other authors, it was not clear whether they could be considered ``correct notions''. The main goal of these notes is to provide the missing evidence to support that \emph{almost complete coarse embeddability} is ``a correct notion''. This is done by proving results about the complete isomorphic theory of $\ell_1$-sums of certain operators spaces. Several results on the complete isomorphic theory of $c_0$-sums of opera…
We prove that for any separable Banach space $X$, there exists a compact metric space which is homeomorphic to the Cantor space and whose Lipschitz-free space contains a complemented subspace isomorphic to $X$. As a consequence we give an example of a compact metric space which is homeomorphic to the Cantor space and whose Lipschitz-free space fails the approximation property and we prove that there exists an uncountable family of topologically equivalent distances on the Cantor space whose free spaces are pairwise non isomorphic. We also prove that the free space over a countable compact metr…
For pointed compact metric spaces $(X,d)$, we address the biduality problem as to when the space of Lipschitz functions $\mathrm{Lip}_0(X,d)$ is isometrically isomorphic to the bidual of the space of little Lipschitz functions $\mathrm{lip}_0(X,d)$, and show that this is the case whenever the closed unit ball of $\mathrm{lip}_0(X,d)$ is dense in the closed unit ball of $\mathrm{Lip}_0(X,d)$ with respect to the topology of pointwise convergence. Then we apply our density criterion to prove in an alternate way the real version of a classical result which asserts that $\mathrm{Lip}_0(X,d^α)$ is i…
Let $X$ be a Banach space and let $(ξ_j)_{j\ge 1}$ be an i.i.d. sequence of symmetric random variables with finite moments of all orders. We prove that the following assertions are equivalent: (1). There exists a constant $K$ such that $$ \Bigl(\E\Big\|\sum_{j=1}^n ξ_j f(x_j)\Big\|^2\Bigr)^{\frac12} \leq K \n f\n_{\rm Lip} \Bigl(\E\Big\|\sum_{j=1}^n ξ_j x_j\Big\|^2\Bigr)^{\frac12} $$ for all Lipschitz functions $f:X\to X$ satisfying $f(0)=0$ and all finite sequences $x_1,...,x_n$ in $X$. (2). $X$ is isomorphic to a Hilbert space.
We prove that if $M$ is an infinite complete metric space then the set of strongly norm-attaining Lipschitz functions $\SA(M)$ contains a linear subspace isomorphic to $c_0$. This solves an open question posed by V. Kadets and O. Roldán.
Our aim in this article is to contribute to the theory of Lipschitz free $p$-spaces for $0<p\le 1$ over the Euclidean spaces $\mathbb{R}^d$ and $\mathbb{Z}^d$. To that end, on one hand we show that $\mathcal{F}_p(\mathbb{R}^d)$ admits a Schauder basis for every $p\in(0,1]$, thus generalizing the corresponding result for the case $p=1$ achieved in [P. Hájek and E. Pernecká, On Schauder bases in Lipschitz-free spaces, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 416 (2014), no. 2, 629--646] and answering in the positive a question that was raised in [F. Albiac, J. L. Ansorena, M. Cúth, and M. Doucha, Embeddability of l…
The paper studies properties of twisted sums of a Banach space $X$ with $c_0(κ)$. We first prove a representation theorem for such twisted sums from which we will obtain, among others, the following: (a) twisted sums of $c_0(I)$ and $c_0(κ)$ are either subspaces of $\ell_\infty(κ)$ or trivial on a copy of $c_0(κ^+)$; (b) under the hypothesis $[\mathfrak p = \mathfrak c]$, when $K$ is either a suitable Corson compact, a separable Rosenthal compact or a scattered compact of finite height, there is a twisted sum of $C(K)$ with $c_0(κ)$ that is not isomorphic to a space of continuous functions; (c…
Let \(X\) be a compact metric space and \(E\) be a Banach space. \(\lip (X, E)\) denotes the Banach space of all \(E\)-valued little Lipschitz functions on \(X\). We show that \(\lip (X, E)^{**}\) is isometrically isomorphic to Banach space of \(E^{**}\)-valued Lipschitz functions \(\Lip(X, E^{**})\) under several conditions. Moreover, we describe the isometric isomorphism from \(\lip (X, E)^{**}\) to \(\Lip (X, E^{**})\).
Explicit formulae are given for a type of Battle-Lemarié scaling functions and related wavelets. Compactly supported sums of their translations are established and applied to alternative norm characterization of sequence spaces isometrically isomorphic to Nikolskii-Besov spaces on R.
We provide some new consequences on the Lipschitz numerical radius and index which were introduced recently. More precisely, we give some renorming results on the Lipschitz numerical index, introduce a concept of Lipschitz numerical radius attaining functions in order to show that the denseness fails for an arbitrary Banach space, and study a Lipschitz version of Daugavet centers. Furthermore, we discuss the Lipschitz numerical index of vector-valued function spaces, absolute sums of Banach spaces, the Köthe-Bochner spaces, and Banach spaces which contain a dense union of increasing family of …
We prove that the Lipschitz-free space over a separable ultrametric space has a monotone Schauder basis and is isomorphic to $\ell_1$. This extends results of A. Dalet using an alternative approach.
This paper initiates the study of the structure of a new class of $p$-Banach spaces, $0<p<1$, namely the Lipschitz free $p$-spaces (alternatively called Arens-Eells $p$-spaces) $\mathcal{F}_{p}(\mathcal{M})$ over $p$-metric spaces. We systematically develop the theory and show that some results hold as in the case of $p=1$, while some new interesting phenomena appear in the case $0<p<1$ which have no analogue in the classical setting. For the former, we, e.g., show that the Lipschitz free $p$-space over a separable ultrametric space is isomorphic to $\ell_{p}$ for all $0<p\le 1$, or that $\ell…
We show that a complemented subspace of a locally convex direct sum of an uncountable collection of Banach spaces is a locally convex direct sum of complemented subspaces of countable subsums. As a corollary we prove that a complemented subspace of a locally convex direct sum of arbitrary collection of $\ell_{1}(Γ)$-spaces is isomorphic to a locally convex direct sum of $\ell_{1}(Γ)$-spaces.
We present a way to turn an arbitrary (unbounded) metric space $\mathcal{M}$ into a bounded metric space $\mathcal{B}$ in such a way that the corresponding Lipschitz-free spaces $\mathcal{F}(\mathcal{M})$ and $\mathcal{F}(\mathcal{B})$ are isomorphic. The construction we provide is functorial in a weak sense and has the advantage of being explicit. Apart from its intrinsic theoretical interest, it has many applications in that it allows to transfer many arguments valid for Lipschitz-free spaces over bounded spaces to Lipschitz-free spaces over unbounded spaces. Furthermore, we show that with a…
We study the numerical radius of Lipschitz operators on Banach spaces via the Lipschitz numerical index, which is an analogue of the numerical index in Banach space theory. We give a characterization of the numerical radius and obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for Banach spaces to have Lipschitz numerical index 1. As an application, we show that real lush spaces and $C$-rich subspaces have Lipschitz numerical index 1. Moreover, using the G$\hat{a}$teaux differentiability of Lipschitz operators, we characterize the Lipschitz numerical index of separable Banach spaces with the RNP. Fi…
We prove that the Lipschitz-free space over a countable proper metric space is isometric to a dual space and has the metric approximation property. We also show that the Lipschitz-free space over a proper ultrametric space is isometric to the dual of a space which is isomorphic to c_0.
In this note, we study some concentration properties for Lipschitz maps defined on Hamming graphs, as well as their stability under sums of Banach spaces. As an application, we extend a result of Causey on the coarse Lipschitz structure of quasi-reflexive spaces satisfying upper $\ell_p$ tree estimates to the setting of $\ell_p$-sums of such spaces. Our result provides us with a tool for constructing the first examples of Banach spaces that are not quasi-reflexive but nevertheless admit some concentration inequality. We also give a sufficient condition for a space to be asymptotic-$c_0$ in ter…
This paper is concerned with the isomorphic structure of the Banach space $\ell_\infty/c_0$ and how it depends on combinatorial tools whose existence is consistent but not provable from the usual axioms of ZFC. Our main global result is that it is consistent that $\ell_\infty/c_0$ does not have an orthogonal \break $\ell_\infty$-decomposition that is, it is not of the form $\ell_\infty(X)$ for any Banach space $X$. The main local result is that it is consistent that $\ell_\infty(c_0(\mathfrak{c}))$ does not embed isomorphically into $\ell_\infty/c_0$, where $\mathfrak{c}$ is the cardinality of…
In our note we show the very close connection between the existence of a Finite Dimensional Decomposition (FDD for short) for a separable Banach space $X$ and the existence of a Lipschitz retraction of $X$ onto a small (in a certain precise sense) generating convex and compact subset $K$ of $X$. In one direction, if $X$ admits an FDD then we construct a Lipschitz retraction onto a small generating convex and compact set $K$. On the other hand, we prove that if $X$ admits a small generating compact Lipschitz retract then $X$ has the $π$-property. We note that it is still unknown if the $π$-prop…

The notions of $p$-convexity and $q$-concavity are mostly known because of their importance as a tool in the study of isomorphic properties of Banach lattices, but they also play a role in several results involving linear maps between Banach spaces and Banach lattices. In this paper we introduce Lipschitz versions of these concepts, dealing with maps between metric spaces and Banach lattices, and start by proving nonlinear versions of two well-known factorization theorems through $L_p$ spaces due to Maurey/Nikishin and Krivine. We also show that a Lipschitz map from a metric space into a Banac…
We introduce the notion of asymptotic coarse Lipschitz equivalence of metric spaces. We show that it is strictly weaker than coarse Lipschitz equivalence. We study its impact on the asymptotic dimension of metric spaces. Then we focus on Banach spaces. We prove that, for $2\leq p<\infty$, being linearly isomorphic to $\ell_p$ is stable under asymptotic coarse Lipschitz equivalences. Finally, we establish a version of the Gorelik principle in this setting and apply it to prove the stability of various properties of asymptotic uniform smoothness of Banach spaces under asymptotic coarse Lipschitz…
New concepts related to approximating a Lipschitz function between Banach spaces by affine functions are introduced. Results which clarify when such approximations are possible are proved and in some cases a complete characterization of the spaces $X$, $Y$ for which any Lipschitz function from $X$ to $Y$ can be so approximated is obtained. This is applied to the study of Lipschitz and uniform quotient mappings between Banach spaces. It is proved, in particular, that any Banach space which is a uniform quotient of $L_p$, $1<p<\infty$, is already isomorphic to a linear quotient of $L_p$.
We propose a family of extensions of the Kantorovich-Rubinstein norm from the space of zero-charge countably additive measures on a compact metric space to the space of all countably additive measures, and a family of extensions of the Lipschitz norm from the quotient space of Lipschitz functions on a compact metric space to the space of all Lipschitz functions. These families are parameterized by $p,q \in [1,\infty]$, and if $p,q$ are Hölder conjugates, then the dual of the resulting $p$-Kantorovich space is isometrically isomorphic to the resulting $q$-Lipschitz space.
Real smooth three-dimensional or higher Banach spaces are isomorphic with respect to the nonlinear structure of Birkhoff-James orthogonality if and only if they are isometrically isomorphic. Moreover, using smooth Radon planes and non-smooth direct sums, in arbitrary dimensions, we construct examples of non-isometric pairs of real Banach spaces that admit norm-preserving homogeneous bicontinuous Birkhoff-James orthogonality preservers among them.
The problem involving the extension of functions from a certain class and defined on subdomains of the ambient space to the whole space is an old and a well investigated theme in analysis. A related question whether the extensions that result in the process may be chosen in a linear or a continuous manner between appropriate spaces of functions turns out to be highly nontrivial. That this holds for the class of continuous functions defined on metric spaces is the well-known Borsuk-Dugundji theorem which asserts that given a metric space M and a subspace S of M, each continuous function g on S …
In this note we study the structure of Lipschitz-free Banach spaces. We show that every Lipschitz-free Banach space over an infinite metric space contains a complemented copy of $\ell_1$. This result has many consequences for the structure of Lipschitz-free Banach spaces. Moreover, we give an example of a countable compact metric space $K$ such that $F(K)$ is not isomorphic to a subspace of $L_1$ and we show that whenever $M$ is a subset of $R^n$, then $F(M)$ is weakly sequentially complete; in particular, $c_0$ does not embed into $F(M)$.
Our goal in this paper is to continue the study initiated by the authors in [Lipschitz free $p$-spaces for $0<p<1$; arXiv:1811.01265 [math.FA]] of the geometry of the Lipschitz free $p$-spaces over quasimetric spaces for $0<p\le1$, denoted $\mathcal F_{p}(\mathcal M)$. Here we develop new techniques to show that, by analogy with the case $p=1$, the space $\ell_{p}$ embeds isomorphically in $\mathcal F_{p}(\mathcal M)$ for $0<p<1$. Going further we see that despite the fact that, unlike the case $p=1$, this embedding need not be complemented in general, complementability of $\ell_{p}$ in a Lips…
We give a simple example of a countable metric space $M$ that does not embed bi-Lipschitz with distortion strictly less than 2 into any Asplund space. Actually, if $M$ embeds with distortion strictly less than 2 to a Banach space $X$, then $X$ contains an isomorphic copy of $\ell_1$. We also show that the space $M$ does not embed with distortion strictly less than $2$ into $\ell_1$ itself but it does embed isometrically into a space that is isomorphic to $\ell_1$.
Given a pointed metric space $M$, we study when there exist $n$-dimensional linear subspaces of $\operatorname{Lip}_0(M)$ consisting of strongly norm-attaining Lipschitz functionals, for $n\in\mathbb{N}$. We show that this is always the case for infinite metric spaces, providing a definitive answer to the question. We also study the possible sizes of such infinite-dimensional closed linear subspaces $Y$, as well as the inverse question, that is, the possible sizes of the metric space $M$ given that such a subspace $Y$ exists. We also show that if the metric space $M$ is $σ$-precompact, then th…

We study a new bi-Lipschitz invariant λ(M) of a metric space M; its finiteness means that Lipschitz functions on an arbitrary subset of M can be linearly extended to functions on M whose Lipschitz constants are enlarged by a factor controlled by λ(M). We prove that λ(M) is finite for several important classes of metric spaces. These include metric trees of arbitrary cardinality, groups of polynomial growth, Gromov-hyperbolic groups, certain classes of Riemannian manifolds of bounded geometry and finite direct sums of arbitrary combinations of these objects. On the other hand we construct an ex…
Inspired by ideas of R. Schatten in his celebrated monograph on a theory of cross-spaces, we introduce the notion of a Lipschitz tensor product X\boxtimes E of a pointed metric space and a Banach space E as a certain linear subspace of the algebraic dual of Lipo(X,E^*). We prove that <Lipo(X,E^*),X\boxtimes E> forms a dual pair. We prove that X\boxtimes E is linearly isomorphic to the linear space of all finite-rank continuous linear operators from (X^#,T) into E, where X^# denotes the space Lipo(X,K) and T is the topology of pointwise convergence of X^#. The concept of Lipschitz tensor produc…
Motivated by a problem stated by S.A.Argyros and Th. Raikoftsalis, we introduce a new class of Banach spaces. Namely, for a sequence of separable Banach spaces $(X_n,\|\cdot\|_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$, we define the Bourgain Delbaen $\mathcal{L}^{\infty}$-sum of the sequence $(X_n,\|\cdot\|_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ which is a Banach space $\mathcal{Z}$ constructed with the Bourgain-Delbaen method. In particular, for every $1\leq p<\infty$, taking $X_n=\ell_p$ for every $n\in\mathbb{N}$ the aforementioned space $\mathcal{Z}_p$ is strictly quasi prime and admits $\ell_p$ as a complemented subspace. We s…
