The problem involving the extension of functions from a certain class and defined on subdomains of the ambient space to the whole space is an old and a well investigated theme in analysis. A related question whether the extensions that result in the process may be chosen in a linear or a continuous manner between appropriate spaces of functions turns out to be highly nontrivial. That this holds for the class of continuous functions defined on metric spaces is the well-known Borsuk-Dugundji theorem which asserts that given a metric space M and a subspace S of M, each continuous function g on S can be extended to a continuous function f on X such that the resulting assignment from C(S) to C(M) is a norm-one continuous linear extension operator.
The present paper is devoted to an investigation of this problem in the context of extendability of Lipschitz functions from closed subspaces of a given Banach space to the whole space such that the choice of the extended function gives rise to a bounded linear (extension) operator between appropriate spaces of Lipschitz functions. It is shown that the indicated property holds precisely when the underlying space is isomorphic to a Hilbert space. Among certain useful consequences of this theorem, we provide an isomorphic analogue of a well-known theorem of S. Reich by show ing that closed convex subsets of a Banach space X arise as Lipschitz retracts of X precisely when X is isomorphically a Hilbert space. We shall also discuss the issue of bounded linear extension operators between spaces of Lipschitz functions now defined on arbitrary subsets of Banach spaces and provide a direct proof of the known non-existence of such an extension operator by using methods which are more accessible than those initially employed by the authors.
In this paper we define the module extension dual Banach algebras and we use this Banach algebras to finding the relationship between $weak^*-$continuous homomorphisms of dual Banach algebras and Connes-amenability. So we study the $weak^*-$continuous derivations on module extension dual Banach algebras.
The notion of linear Hahn-Banach extension operator was first studied in detail by Heinrich and Mankiewicz (1982). Previously, J. Lindenstrauss (1966) studied similar versions of this notion in the context of non separable reflexive Banach spaces. Subsequently, Sims and Yost (1989) proved the existence of linear Hahn-Banach extension operators via interspersing subspaces in a purely Banach space theoretic set up. In this paper, we study similar questions in the context of Banach modules and module homomorphisms, in particular, Banach algebras of operators on Banach spaces. Based on Dales, Kani…
In this article we shall focus on the derivations on module extension of Banach algebras and determine the general structure of them. Then we obtain some results concerning the automatic continuity of these mappings.
We prove that an onto isometry between unit spheres of finite-dimensional polyhedral Banach spaces extends to a linear isometry of the corresponding spaces.
We study Hahn-Banach extensions of multilinear forms defined on Banach sequence spaces. We characterize $c_0$ in terms of extension of bilinear forms, and describe the Banach sequence spaces in which every bilinear form admits extensions to any superspace.
Let $A$ and $X$ be Banach algebras and let $X$ be an algebraic Banach $A-$module. Then the $\ell^1-$direct sum $A\times X$ equipped with the multiplication $$(a,x)(b,y)=(ab, ay+xb+xy)\quad (a,b\in A, x,y\in X)$$ is a Banach algebra, denoted by $A\bowtie X$, which will be called "\textit{a generalized module extension Banach algebra}". Module extension algebras, Lau product and also the direct sum of Banach algebras are the main examples satisfying this framework. We characterize the structure of $n-$dual valued ($n\in\mathbb N)$) derivations on $A\bowtie X$ from which we investigate the $n-$we…
Let $X$ be a Banach space with a separable dual $X^{*}$. Let $Y\subset X$ be a closed subspace, and $f:Y\to\mathbb{R}$ a $C^{1}$-smooth function. Then we show there is a $C^{1}$ extension of $f$ to $X$.
These notes concern the nonlinear geometry of Banach spaces, asymptotic uniform smoothness and several Banach-Saks-like properties. We study the existence of certain concentration inequalities in asymptotically uniformly smooth Banach spaces as well as weakly sequentially continuous coarse (Lipschitz) embeddings into those spaces. Some results concerning the descriptive set theoretical complexity of those properties are also obtained. We finish the paper with a list of open problem.
We show that fractional powers of general sectorial operators on Banach spaces can be obtained by the harmonic extension approach. Moreover, for the corresponding second order ordinary differential equation with incomplete data describing the harmonic extension we prove existence and uniqueness of a bounded solution (i.e. of the harmonic extension).
In the paper is considered two problems on extension of operators whose range space for the first problem (or domain space for the second one) belongs to the fixed class of finite equivalence, which is generated by a given Banach space $X$. Both problems are considered in two variants: isometric and isomorphic ones. Received a full solution of the first problem and the solution, close to final one for the second problem.
In this paper we present part I of nonlinear operator ideals theory between metric spaces and Banach spaces. Building upon the definition of operator ideal between arbitrary Banach spaces of A. Pietsch we pose three types of nonlinear versions of operator ideals. We introduce several examples of nonlinear ideals and the relationships between them. For every space ideal $\mathsf{A}$ can be generated by a special nonlinear ideal which consists of those Lipschitz operators admitting a factorization through a Banach space $\mathbf{M}\in\mathsf{A}$. We investigate products and quotients of nonlinea…

In recent years the coincidence of the operator relations equivalence after extension and Schur coupling was settled for the Hilbert space case, by showing that equivalence after extension implies equivalence after one-sided extension. In this paper we investigate consequences of equivalence after extension for compact Banach space operators. We show that generating the same operator ideal is necessary but not sufficient for two compact operators to be equivalent after extension. In analogy with the necessary and sufficient conditions on the singular values for compact Hilbert space operators …
We show that there exists a Banach space $E$ with the following properties: the Banach algebra $\mathscr{B}(E)$ of bounded, linear operators on $E$ has a singular extension which splits algebraically, but it does not split strongly, and the homological bidimension of $\mathscr{B}(E)$ is at least two. The first of these conclusions solves a natural problem left open by Bade, Dales, and Lykova (Mem. Amer. Math. Soc. 1999), while the second answers a question of Helemskii. The Banach space $E$ that we use was originally introduced by Read (J. London Math. Soc. 1989).
In this paper, we study nonlinear embeddings between Banach spaces. More specifically, the goal of this paper is to study weaker versions of coarse and uniform embeddability, and to provide suggestive evidences that those weaker embeddings may be stronger than one would think. We do such by proving that many known results for coarse and uniform embeddings remain valid for those weaker notions of embeddings.
The main result of this paper states that if a Banach space X has the property that every bounded operator from an arbitrary subspace of X into an arbitrary Banach space of cotype 2 extends to a bounded operator on X, then $B(\ell_{\infty},X^*)=Π_2(\ell_{\infty},X^*)$. If in addition X has the Gaussian average property, then it is of type 2. This implies that the same conclusion holds if X has the Gordon-Lewis property (in particular X could be a Banach lattice) or if X is isomorphic to a subspace of a Banach lattice of finite cotype, thus solving the Maurey extension property for these classe…
Ordered vector spaces E and F are said to be order isomorphic if there is a (not necessarily linear) bijection between them that preserves order. We investigate some situations under which an order isomorphism between two Banach lattices implies the persistence of some linear lattice structure. For instance, it is shown that if a Banach lattice E is order isomorphic to C(K) for some compact Hausdorff space K, then E is (linearly) isomorphic to C(K) as a Banach lattice. Similar results hold for Banach lattices order isomorphic to c_0, and for Banach lattices that contain a closed sublattice ord…
We study the relationship between exact interpolation spaces for positive, linear operators, for order preserving, Lipschitz continuous operators, and for positive Gagliardo-Peetre operators, and exact partially $K$-monotone spaces in interpolation couples of compatible Banach lattices. By general Banach lattice theory we recover a characterisation of exact interpolation spaces for order preserving, Lipschitz continuous operators in the couple $(L^1,L^\infty )$ due to Bénilan and Crandall.
Let $E$ and $F$ be Banach lattices. Let $G$ be a vector sublattice of $E$ and $T: G\rightarrow F$ be an order continuous positive compact (resp. weakly compact) operators. We show that if $G$ is an ideal or an order dense sublattice of $E$, then $T$ has a norm preserving compact (resp. weakly compact) positive extension to $E$ which is likewise order continuous on $E$. In particular, we prove that every compact positive orthomorphism on an order dense sublattice of $E$ extends uniquely to a compact positive orthomorphism on $E$.
In these notes, we study nonlinear embeddings between Banach spaces which are also weakly sequentially continuous. In particular, our main result implies that if a Banach space $X$ coarsely (resp. uniformly) embeds into a Banach space $Y$ by a weakly sequentially continuous map, then every spreading model $(e_n)_n$ of a normalized weakly null sequence in $X$ satisfies \[\|e_1+\ldots+e_k\|_{\overlineδ_Y}\lesssim\|e_1+\ldots+e_k\|_S,\] where $\overlineδ_Y$ is the modulus of asymptotic uniform convexity of $Y$. Among other results, we obtain Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$ so that $X$ coarsely (resp. u…
In this paper, we prove that the existence of an $\varepsilon$-isometry from a separable Banach space $X$ into $Y$ (the James space or a reflexive space) implies the existence of a linear isometry from $X$ into $Y$. Then we present a set valued mapping version lemma on non-surjective $\varepsilon$-isometries of Banach spaces. Using the above results, we also discuss the rotundity and smoothness of Banach spaces under the perturbation by $\varepsilon$-isometries.
In this paper, we present a geometric form of the Hahn-Banach extension theorem for $L^{0}-$linear functions and prove that the geometric form is equivalent to the analytic form of the Hahn-Banach extension theorem. Further, we use the geometric form to give a new proof of a known basic strict separation theorem in random locally convex modules. Finally, using the basic strict separation theorem we establish the Goldstine-Weston theorem in random normed modules under the two kinds of topologies----the $(ε,λ)-$topology and the locally $L^{0}-$convex topology, and also provide a counterexample s…
Let us consider a Banach space $X$ with the property that every real-valued Lipschitz function $f$ can be uniformly approximated by a Lipschitz, $C^1$-smooth function $g$ with $\Lip(g)\le C \Lip(f)$ (with $C$ depending only on the space $X$). This is the case for a Banach space $X$ bi-Lipschitz homeomorphic to a subset of $c_0(Γ)$, for some set $Γ$, such that the coordinate functions of the homeomorphism are $C^1$-smooth. Then, we prove that for every closed subspace $Y\subset X$ and every $C^1$-smooth (Lipschitz) function $f:Y\to\Real$, there is a $C^1$-smooth (Lipschitz, respectively) extens…
The extension of Banach Lie-Poisson spaces is studied and linked to the extension of a special class of Banach Lie algebras. The case of W*-algebras is given particular attention. Semidirect products and the extension of the restricted Banach Lie-Poisson space by the Banach Lie-Poisson space of compact operators are given as examples.
It is known that smooth bump functions are absent in the majority of infinite-dimensional Banach spaces. This is an obstacle in the development of local analysis, in particular in the questions of extending local maps onto the whole space. We suggest an approach that substitutes bump functions with special maps, which we call K-maps. It allows us to extend smooth local maps from non-smooth spaces, such as $C^q[0,1], q=0,1,...$. We also prove the Borel lemma for spaces possessing K-maps.
[REVISED VERSION] The aim of this paper is to state a sharp version of the König supremum theorem, an equivalent reformulation of the Hahn--Banach theorem. We apply it to derive statements of the Lagrange multipliers, Karush-Kuhn-Tucker and Fritz John type, for nonlinear infinite programs. We also show that a weak concept of convexity coming from minimax theory, infsup-convexity, is the adequate one for this kind of results.
In 1992, Kiendi, Adamy and Stelzner investigated under which conditions a certain type of function constituted a Lyapunov function for some time-invariant linear system. Six years later, it was obtained that this property holds if and only if the Banach space enjoys the self-extension property. However, the knowledge of these spaces needed to be extended in order to make useful this characterization, since there were little information on which classic Banach spaces satisfy this property and its relations with other classic properties. We present the self-extension property in a wider frame, r…
Let $X=C[0,1]$, and $Y$ be an arbitrary Banach space. Consider a collection of open segments $\{V_i \}\subset X$. Suppose the map $f: \cup_i V_i \to Y$ has $q$ bounded Fréchet derivatives ($q=0,1,...,\infty$), and $f$ and all its derivatives have continuous bounded limits at the boundary. Then, subject to some non-intercept condition for the segments $V_i$, the map $f$ can be extended to $F: X\to Y$, so that $F_{|\,\cup_i V_i}=f$ and $F$ has $q$ bounded derivatives. We prove similar Whitney's Extension theorem generalizations for some other Banach spaces. We also prove Seeley Extension theorem…
By extending the notion of Arens regularity of bilinear mappings, we say that a bounded trilinear map on Banach spaces id Aron--Berner regular when all its six Aron-Berner extensions to the bidual spaces coincide. We give some results on the Aron-Berner regularity of certain trilinear maps. We then focus on the bidual, $E^{**},$ of a Jordan banach triple system $(E,π)$, and investigate those conditions under which $E^{**}$ is itself a Jordan Banach triple system under each of the Aron-Berner extensions of the triple product $π.$ We also compare these six triple products with those arising from…
We find conditions for a smooth nonlinear map $f:U\rightarrow V$ between open subsets of Hilbert or Banach spaces to be locally convex in the sense that for some $c$ and each positive $\varepsilon<c$ the image $% f(B_\varepsilon(x))$ of each $\varepsilon$-ball $B_\varepsilon(x)\subset U$ is convex. We give a lower bound on $c$ via the second order Lipschitz constant $\mathrm{Lip}_2(f)$, the Lipschitz-open constant $\mathrm{Lip}_o(f)$ of $f$, and the 2-convexity number $\mathrm{conv}_2(X)$ of the Banach space $% X$.
In this study, we analyze the various strengthening and weakening of the uniqueness of the Hahn--Banach extension. In addition, we consider the case in which $Y$ is an ideal of $X$. In this context, we study the property-$(U)/ (SU)/ (HB)$ and property-$(k-U)$ for a subspace $Y$ of a Banach space $X$. We obtain various new characterizations of these properties. We discuss various examples in the classical Banach spaces, where the aforementioned properties are satisfied and where they fail. It is observed that a hyperplane in $c_0$ has property-$(HB)$ if and only if it is an $M$-summand. Conside…
We study extension theorems for Lipschitz-type operators acting on metric spaces and with values on spaces of integrable functions. Pointwise domination is not a natural feature of such spaces, and so almost everywhere inequalities and other measure-theoretic notions are introduced.%more appropriate. Thus, we adapt the classical definition of Lipschitz map to the context of spaces of integrable functions by introducing such elements. We analyze Lipschitz type inequalities in two fundamental cases. The first concerns a.e. pointwise inequalities, while the second considers dominations involving …
Let $X$ and $Z$ be Banach spaces, $A$ a closed subset of $X$ and a mapping $f:A \to Z$. We give necessary and sufficient conditions to obtain a $C^1$ smooth mapping $F:X \to Z$ such that $F_{\mid_A}=f$, when either (i) $X$ and $Z$ are Hilbert spaces and $X$ is separable, or (ii) $X^*$ is separable and $Z$ is an absolute Lipschitz retract, or (iii) $X=L_2$ and $Z=L_p$ with $1<p<2$, or (iv) $X=L_p$ and $Z=L_2$ with $2<p<\infty$.
We prove results of existence of a solution (resp. existence and uniqness of a solution) for nonlinear differential equations of type $x'(t) +G(x,t) x(t) = F(x,t),$ in an abstract Banach subspace $X$ of the space of bounded real-valued continuous functions, satisfying some general and natural property. In our work, the functions $F$ and $G$ jointly depend on the variables $(x,t)\in X\times \R$. Several examples will be given, in various function spaces, to illustrate our results. The vector-valued framework is also considered.
We show that if $T$ is an isometry (as metric spaces) from an open subgroup of the invertible group $A^{-1}$ of a unital Banach algebra $A$ onto an open subgroup of the invertible group $B^{-1}$ of a unital Banach algebra $B$, then $T$ is extended to a real-linear isometry up to translation between these Banach algebras. We consider multiplicativity or unti-multiplicativity of the isometry. Note that a unital linear isometry between unital semisimple commutative Banach algebra need be multiplicative. On the other hand, we show that if $A$ is commutative and $A$ or $B$ are semisimple, then $(T(…
Let $X$ and $E$ be $f$-algebras and $p:X \to E_+$ be a monotone vector norm. Then the triple $(X,p,E)$ is called a lattice-normed $f$-algebraic space. In this paper, we show a generalization of the extension of the Hahn-Banach theorem for operators on the lattice-normed $f$-algebras, in which the extension of one step of that is not similar to the other Hahn-Banach theorems. Also, we give some applications and results.
In 1994 H. Bart and V.É. Tsekanovskii posed the question whether the Banach space operator relations matricial coupling (MC), equivalence after extension (EAE) and Schur coupling (SC) coincide, leaving only the implication EAE/MC $\Rightarrow$ SC open. Despite several affirmative results, in this paper we show that the answer in general is no. This follows from a complete description of EAE and SC for the case that the operators act on essentially incomparable Banach spaces, which also leads to a new characterization of the notion of essential incomparability. Concretely, the forward shift ope…
If $D:A \to X$ is a derivation from a Banach algebra to a contractive, Banach $A$-bimodule, then one can equip $X^{**}$ with an $A^{**}$-bimodule structure, such that the second transpose $D^{**}: A^{**} \to X^{**}$ is again a derivation. We prove an analogous extension result, where $A^{**}$ is replaced by $\F(A)$, the \emph{enveloping dual Banach algebra} of $A$, and $X^{**}$ by an appropriate kind of universal, enveloping, normal dual bimodule of $X$. Using this, we obtain some new characterizations of Connes-amenability of $\F(A)$. In particular we show that $\F(A)$ is Connes-amenable if a…
Schur coupling (SC) and equivalence after extension (EAE) are important relations for bounded operators on Banach spaces. It has been known for 30 years that the former implies the latter, but only recently Ter Horst, Messerschmidt, Ran and Roelands disproved the converse by constructing a pair of Fredholm operators which are EAE, but not SC. Motivated by this result, we investigate when EAE and SC coincide for Fred\-holm operators. Fredholm operators which are EAE have the same Fredholm index. Surprisingly, we find that for each integer $k$ and every pair of Banach spaces $(\mathcal{X},\mathc…
In this paper we provide some extension results for n-cyclically monotone operators in reflexive Banach spaces by making use of the Fenchel duality. In this way we give a positive answer to a question posed by Bauschke and Wang in [4].
In this paper, we introduce and study a new generalized inverse, called ag-Drazin inverses in a Banach algebra $\mathcal{A}$ with unit $1$. An element $a\in\mathcal{A}$ is ag-Drazin invertible if there exists $x\in\mathcal{A}$ such that $ax=xa, \, xax=x \ {\rm and} \ a-axa\in\mathcal{A}^{acc}$, where $\mathcal{A}^{acc}\triangleq\{a\in\mathcal{A}: a-λ1 \ {\rm is \ generalized \ Drazin\ invertible} \ {\rm for \ all} \ λ\in\mathbb{C}\backslash\{0\}\}.$ Using idempotent elements, we characterize this inverse and give some its representations. Also, we prove that $a\in\mathcal{A}$ is ag-Drazin inve…
In stark contrast to the case of finite rank operators on a Banach space, the socle of a general, complex, semisimple, and unital Banach algebra $A$ may exhibit the `pathological' property that not all traceless elements of the socle of $A$ can be expressed as the commutator of two elements belonging to the socle. The aim of this paper is to show how one may develop an extension of $A$ which removes the aforementioned problem. A naive way of achieving this is to simply embed $A$ in the algebra of bounded linear operators on $A$, i.e. the natural embedding of $A$ into $\mathcal L(A)$. But this …
It was recently shown in [24] that the Banach space operator relations Equivalence After Extension (EAE) and Schur Coupling (SC) do not coincide by characterizing these relations for operators acting on essentially incomparable Banach spaces. The examples that prove the non-coincidence are Fredholm operators, which is a subclass of relatively regular operators, the latter being operators with complementable kernels and ranges. In this paper we analyse the relations EAE and SC for the class of relatively regular operators, leading to an equivalent Banach space operator problem from which we der…
In this work we investigate the c_0-extension property. This property generalizes Sobczyk's theorem in the context of nonseparable Banach spaces. We prove that a sufficient condition for a Banach space to have this property is that its closed dual unit ball is weak-star monolithic. We also present several results about the c_0-extension property in the context of C(K) Banach spaces. An interesting result in the realm of C(K) spaces is that the existence of a Corson compactum K such that C(K) does not have the c_0-extension property is independent from the axioms of ZFC.
Let $F:X\to X$ be a $C^2_\loc$ map in a Banach space $X$, and $A$ be its Frèchet derivative at the element $w:=w_\ve$, which solves the problem $(\ast) \dotw=-A^{-1}_\ve(F(w)+\ve w)$, $w(0)=w_0$, where $A_\ve:=A+\ve I$. Assume that $\|A^{-1}_\ve\|\leq c \ve^{-k}$, $0<k\leq 1$, $0<\ve>\ve_0$. Then $(\ast)$ has a unique global solution, $w(t)$, there exists $w(\infty)$, and $(\ast\ast) F(w(\infty))+\ve w(\infty)=0$. Thus the DSM (Dynamical Systems Method) is justified for equation $(\ast\ast)$. The limit of $w_\ve$ as $\ve\to 0$ is studied.
If $X$ is a closed subspace of a Banach space $L$ which embeds into a Banach lattice not containing $\ell_\infty^n$'s uniformly and $L/X$ contains $\ell_\infty^n$'s uniformly, then $X$ cannot have local unconditional structure in the sense of Gordon-Lewis (GL-{\sl l.u.st.}).
In complete metric measure spaces equipped with a doubling measure and supporting a weak Poincaré inequality, we investigate when a given Banach-valued Sobolev function defined on a subset satisfying a measure-density condition is the restriction of a Banach-valued Sobolev function defined on the whole space. We investigate the problem for Hajłasz- and Newton-Sobolev spaces, respectively. First, we show that Hajłasz-Sobolev extendability is independent of the target Banach spaces. We also show that every $c_0$-valued Newton-Sobolev extension set is a Banach-valued Newton-Sobolev extension set …
We give examples of two Banach spaces. One Banach space has no spreading model which contains $\ell_p$ ($1\le p<\infty$) or $c_0$. The other space has an unconditional basis for which $\ell_p$ ($1\le p<\infty$) and $c_0$ are block finitely represented in all block bases.
In this work we discuss several ways to extend to the context of Banach spaces the notion of Hilbert-Schmidt operators: $p$-summing operators, $γ$-summing or $γ$-radonifying operators, weakly $*1$-nuclear operators and classes of operators defined via factorization properties. We introduce the class $PS_2(E; F)$ of pre-Hilbert-Schmidt operators as the class of all operators $u:E\to F$ such that $w\circ u \circ v$ is Hilbert-Schmidt for every bounded operator $v: H_1\to E$ and every bounded operator $w:F\to H_2$, where $H_1$ et $H_2$ are Hilbert spaces. Besides the trivial case where one of the…
