For a given bounded positive (semidefinite) linear operator $A$ on a complex Hilbert space $\big(\mathcal{H}, \langle \cdot\mid \cdot\rangle \big)$, we consider the semi-Hilbertian space $\big(\mathcal{H}, \langle \cdot\mid \cdot\rangle_A \big)$ where ${\langle x\mid y\rangle}_A := \langle Ax\mid y\rangle$ for every $x, y\in\mathcal{H}$. The $A$-numerical radius of an $A$-bounded operator $T$ on $\mathcal{H}$ is given by \begin{align*} ω_A(T) = \sup\Big\{\big|{\langle Tx\mid x\rangle}_A\big|\,; \,\,x\in \mathcal{H}, \,{\langle x\mid x\rangle}_A= 1\Big\}. \end{align*} Our aim in this paper is to derive several $\mathbb{A}$-numerical radius inequalities for $2\times 2$ operator matrices whose entries are $A$-bounded operators, where $\mathbb{A}=\text{diag}(A,A)$.
For a complex nilpotent finite dimensional Lie algebra of matrices,and a Jordan-Hölder basis of it, we prove a spectral radius formula which extends a well-known result for commuting matrices.
The main goal of this article is to establish several new upper and lower bounds for the $\mathbb{A}$-numerical radius of $2\times 2$ operator matrices, where $\mathbb{A}$ be the $2\times 2$ diagonal operator matrix whose diagonal entries are positive bounded operator $A$.
Denote by $w(T)$ the numerical radius of a matrix $T$. An elementary proof is given to the fact that $w(AB) \leq w(A)w(B)$ for a pair of commuting matrices of order two, and characterization is given for the matrix pairs that attain the quality.
We prove an inequality for the spectral radius of products of non-negative matrices conjectured by X. Zhan. We show that for all $n\times n$ non-negative matrices $A$ and $B$, $ρ(A\circ B)\leρ((A\circ A)(B\circ B))^{1/2}\leρ(AB)$, where $\circ$ represents the Hadamard product.
Operator matrices have played a significant role in studying Hilbert space operators. In this paper, we discuss further properties of operator matrices and present new estimates for the operator norms and numerical radii of such operators. Moreover, operator matrices whose real and imaginary parts are positive will be discussed, and sharper bounds will be shown for such class.
The concepts of weighted numerical radius has been defined in recent times. In this article, we obtain several upper bound for weighted numerical radius of operators and $2 \times 2$ operator matrices which generalize and improves some well known famous inequality for classical numerical radius. We also obtain an upper bound for the weighted numerical radius of the Aluthge transformation, $\tilde{T}$ of an operator $T \in \mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H}),$ where $\tilde{T} = |T|^{1/2} U |T|^{1/2}$ and $T = U |T|$ be the canonical polar decomposition of $T.$
Let $\mathbb{A}= \begin{pmatrix} A & 0 \\ 0 & A \\ \end{pmatrix} $ be a $2\times2$ diagonal operator matrix whose each diagonal entry is a bounded positive (semidefinite) linear operator $A$ acting on a complex Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$. In this paper, we derive several $\mathbb{A}$-numerical radius inequalities for $2\times 2$ operator matrices whose entries are bounded with respect to the seminorm induced by the positive operator $A$ on $\mathcal{H}$. Some applications of our inequalities are also given.
Let ($\mathcal{H}, \langle . , .\rangle )$ be a complex Hilbert space and $A$ be a positive bounded linear operator on it. Let $w_A(T)$ be the $A$-numerical radius and $\|T\|_A$ be the $A$-operator seminorm of an operator $T$ acting on the semi-Hilbertian space $(\mathcal{H}, \langle .,.\rangle_A),$ where $\langle x, y\rangle_A:=\langle Ax, y\rangle$ for all $x,y\in \mathcal{H}$. In this article, we establish several upper and lower bounds for $B$-numerical radius of $2\times 2$ operator matrices, where $B=\begin{bmatrix} A & 0 0 & A \end{bmatrix}$. Further, we prove some refinements of earlie…
Let $\mathbb{A}=\left( \begin{array}{cc} A & 0 \\ 0 & A \\ \end{array} \right)$ be the $2\times2$ diagonal operator matrix determined by a positive bounded operator $A$. For semi-Hilbertian operators $X$ and $Y$, we first show that \begin{align*} w^2_{\mathbb{A}}\left(\begin{bmatrix} 0 & X \\ Y & 0 \end{bmatrix}\right) &\leq \frac{1}{4}\max\Big\{{\big\|XX^{\sharp_A} + Y^{\sharp_A}Y\big\|}_{A}, {\big\|X^{\sharp_A}X + YY^{\sharp_A}\big\|}_{A}\Big\} + \frac{1}{2}\max\big\{w_{A}(XY), w_{A}(YX)\big\}, \end{align*} where $w_{\mathbb{A}}(\cdot)$, ${\|\cdot\|}_{A}$ and $w_{A}(\cdot)$ are the $\mathbb{…
We show that the set of bounded linear operators from $X$ to $X$ admits a Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás type theorem for numerical radius whenever $X$ is $\ell_1(\mathbb{C})$ or $c_0(\mathbb{C})$. As an essential tool we provide two constructive versions of the classical Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás theorem for $\ell_1(\mathbb{C})$.
The numerical radius of a matrix is a scalar quantity that has many applications in the study of matrix analysis. Due to the difficulty in computing the numerical radius, inequalities bounding it have received a considerable attention in the literature. In this article, we present many new bounds for the numerical radius of accretive matrices. The importance of this study is the presence of a new approach that treats a specific class of matrices, namely the accretive ones. The new bounds provide a new set of inequalities, some of which can be considered as refinements of other existing ones, w…
We give tight upper bounds on the numerical range of square matrices in terms of their Frobenius (Euclidian) norm and a combinatorial parameter similar to the clique number of graphs. Our results imply a concise form of the fundamental theorem of Turan in extremal graph theory.
In this paper, we establish some upper bounds for numerical radius inequalities including of $2\times 2$ operator matrices and their off-diagonal parts. Among other inequalities, it is shown that if $T=\left[\begin{array}{cc} 0&X, Y&0 \end{array}\right]$, then \begin{align*} ω^{r}(T)\leq 2^{r-2}\left\|f^{2r}(|X|)+g^{2r}(|Y^*|)\right\|^\frac{1}{2}\left\|f^{2r}(|Y|)+g^{2r}(|X^*|)\right\|^\frac{1}{2} \end{align*} and \begin{align*} ω^{r}(T)\leq 2^{r-2}\left\|f^{2r}(|X|)+f^{2r}(|Y^*|)\right\|^\frac{1}{2}\left\|g^{2r}(|Y|)+g^{2r}(|X^*|)\right\|^\frac{1}{2}, \end{align*} where $X, Y$ are bounded lin…
The lower spectral radius of a set of $d \times d$ matrices is defined to be the minimum possible exponential growth rate of long products of matrices drawn from that set. When considered as a function of a finite set of matrices of fixed cardinality it is known that the lower spectral radius can vary discontinuously as a function of the matrix entries. In a previous article the author and J. Bochi conjectured that when considered as a function on the set of all pairs of $2 \times 2$ real matrices, the lower spectral radius is discontinuous on a set of positive (eight-dimensional) Lebesgue mea…
Let $A$ be a positive (semidefinite) bounded linear operator acting on a complex Hilbert space $\big(\mathcal{H}, \langle \cdot\mid \cdot\rangle \big)$. The semi-inner product ${\langle x\mid y\rangle}_A := \langle Ax\mid y\rangle$, $x, y\in\mathcal{H}$ induces a seminorm ${\|\cdot\|}_A$ on $\mathcal{H}$. Let $T$ be an $A$-bounded operator on $\mathcal{H}$, the $A$-numerical radius of $T$ is given by \begin{align*} ω_A(T) = \sup\Big\{\big|{\langle Tx\mid x\rangle}_A\big|: \,\,x\in \mathcal{H}, \,{\|x\|}_A = 1\Big\}. \end{align*} In this paper, we establish several inequalities for $ω_\mathbb{A…
In this article we answer a question raised by N. Feldman in \cite{Feldman} concerning the dynamics of tuples of operators on $\mathbb{R}^n$. In particular, we prove that for every positive integer $n\geq 2$ there exist $n$ tuples $(A_1, A_2, ..., A_n)$ of $n\times n$ matrices over $\mathbb{R}$ such that $(A_1, A_2, ..., A_n)$ is hypercyclic. We also establish related results for tuples of $2\times 2$ matrices over $\mathbb{R}$ or $\mathbb{C}$ being in Jordan form.
We observe that the classical notion of numerical radius gives rise to a notion of smoothness in the space of bounded linear operators on certain Banach spaces, whenever the numerical radius is a norm. We demonstrate an important class of \emph{real} Banach space $ \mathbb{X} $ for which the numerical radius defines a norm on $ \mathbb{L}(\mathbb{X}), $ the space of all bounded linear operators on $ \mathbb{X} $. We characterize Birkhoff-James orthogonality in the space of bounded linear operators on a finite-dimensional Banach space, endowed with the numerical radius norm. Some examples are a…
Let $A=\begin{bmatrix} A_{ij} \end{bmatrix}$ be an $n\times n$ operator matrix, where each $A_{ij}$ is a bounded linear operator on a complex Hilbert space. Among other numerical radius bounds, we show that $w(A)\leq w(\hat{A})$, where $\hat{A}=\begin{bmatrix} \hat{a}_{ij} \end{bmatrix}$ is an $n\times n$ complex matrix, with $$\hat{a}_{ij}= \begin{cases} w(A_{ii}) \text{ when $i=j$,} \left \| | A_{ij}|+ | A_{ji}^*| \right\|^{1/2} \left\| | A_{ji}|+ | A_{ij}^*| \right\|^{1/2} \text{ when $i<j$,} 0 \text{ when $i>j$} . \end{cases}$$ This is a considerable improvement of the existing bound $w(A)…
Let $H_{n}^{+}(\mathbb{R})$ be the cone of all positive semidefinite $n\times n$ real matrices. Two of the best known partial orders that were mostly studied on subsets of square complex matrices are the Löwner and the minus partial orders. Motivated by applications in statistics we study these partial orders on $H_{n}^{+}(\mathbb{R})$. We describe the form of all surjective maps on $H_{n}^{+}(\mathbb{R})$, $n>1$, that preserve the Löwner partial order in both directions. We present an equivalent definition of the minus partial order on $H_{n}^{+}(\mathbb{R})$ and also characterize all surject…
In the present paper, we provide several inequalities for the generalized numerical radius of operator matrices as introduced by A. Abu-omar and F. Kittaneh in [3]. We generalize the convexity and the log-convexity results obtained by M. Sababheh in [12] for the case of the numerical radius to the case of the generalized numerical radius. We illustrate our work by providing a positive answer for the question addressed in [12] for the convexity of a certain matrix operator function. Moreover, and motivated by the results of A. Aldalabih and F. Kittaneh in [2] for the case of Hilbert-Schmidt num…
An $n \times n$ matrix $A$ with real entries is said to be Schur stable if all the eigenvalues of $A$ are inside the open unit disc. We investigate the structure of linear maps on $M_n(\mathbb{R})$ that preserve the collection $\mathcal{S}$ of Schur stable matrices. We prove that if $L$ is a linear map such that $L(\mathcal{S}) \subseteq \mathcal{S}$, then $ρ(L)$ (the spectral radius of $L$) is at most $1$ and when $L(\mathcal{S}) = \mathcal{S}$, we have $ρ(L) = 1$. In the latter case, the map $L$ preserves the spectral radius function and using this, we characterize such maps on both $M_n(\ma…
In this paper, we present various inequalities for generalized numerical radius of $2 \times 2$ block matrices for Schatten p-norm. Moreover, we give a refinement of the triangle inequality for the Schatten p-generalized numerical radius.
In this paper, we study the relationship between operator space norm and operator space numerical radius on the matrix space $\mathcal{M}_n(X)$, when $X$ is a numerical radius operator space. Moreover, we establish several inequalities for operator space numerical radius and the maximal numerical radius norm of $2\times 2$ operator matrices and their off-diagonal parts. One of our main results states that if $(X, (O_n))$ is an operator space, then \begin{align*} \frac12\max\big(W_{\max}(x_1+x_2)&, W_{\max}(x_1-x_2) \big)\\ &\le W_{\max}\Big(\begin{bmatrix} 0 & x_1 \\ x_2 & 0 \end{bmatrix}\Big)…
Let $A$ be a positive (semidefinite) operator on a complex Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ and let $\mathbb{A}=\left(\begin{array}{cc} A & O O & A \end{array}\right).$ We obtain upper and lower bounds for the $A$-Davis-Wielandt radius of semi-Hilbertian space operators, which generalize and improve on the existing ones. We also obtain upper bounds for the $\mathbb{A}$-Davis-Wielandt radius of $2 \times 2$ operator matrices. Finally, we determine the exact value for the $\mathbb{A}$-Davis-Wielandt radius of two operator matrices $\left(\begin{array}{cc} I & X\\ 0 & 0 \end{array}\right)$ and $\left(…
We generalize several inequalities involving powers of the numerical radius for off-diagonal part of $2\times2$ operator matrices of the form $T=\left[\begin{array}{cc} 0&B, C&0 \end{array}\right]$, where $B, C$ are two operators. In particular, if $T=\left[\begin{array}{cc} 0&B, C&0 \end{array}\right]$, then we get \begin{align*} {1\over 2^{{3\over2}(r-1)}}\max\{ \| μ\|, \| η\| \} \leq w^{r}(T)\leq \frac{1}{2^{r+1}} \max\{ \| μ\|, \| η\| \}, \end{align*} where $r\geq 2$ and $ μ=|(C-B^{*})+i(C+B^{*})|^{r}+|(B^{*}-C)+i(C+B^{*})|^{r}$, $ η=|(B-C^{*})+i(B+C^{*})|^{r}+|(C^{*}-B)+i(B+C^{*})|^{r}$.
We consider random $n\times n$ matrices $X$ with independent and centered entries and a general variance profile. We show that the spectral radius of $X$ converges with very high probability to the square root of the spectral radius of the variance matrix of $X$ when $n$ tends to infinity. We also establish the optimal rate of convergence, that is a new result even for general i.i.d. matrices beyond the explicitly solvable Gaussian cases. The main ingredient is the proof of the local inhomogeneous circular law [arXiv:1612.07776] at the spectral edge.
We give examples of $n \times n$ matrices $A$ and $B$ over the filed $\mathbb{K}=\mathbb{R}$ or $\mathbb{C}$ such that for almost every column vector $x \in \mathbb{K}^n$, the orbit of $x$ under the action of the semigroup generated by $A$ and $B$ is dense in $\mathbb{K}^n$.
The lower spectral radius, or joint spectral subradius, of a set of real $d \times d$ matrices is defined to be the smallest possible exponential growth rate of long products of matrices drawn from that set. The lower spectral radius arises naturally in connection with a number of topics including combinatorics on words, the stability of linear inclusions in control theory, and the study of random Cantor sets. In this article we apply some ideas originating in the study of dominated splittings of linear cocycles over a dynamical system to characterise the points of continuity of the lower spec…
Let ${\mathcal M}_2(\mathbb F)$ be the algebra of 2$\times$2 matrices over the real or complex field $\mathbb F$. For a given positive integer $k\geq 1$, the $k$-commutator of $A$ and $B$ is defined by $[A,B]_k=[[A,B]_{k-1},B]$ with $[A,B]_0=A$ and $[A,B]_1=[A,B]=AB-BA$. The main result is shown that a map $Φ: {\mathcal M}_2(\mathbb F)\to {\mathcal M}_2(\mathbb F)$ with range containing all rank one matrices satisfies that $[Φ(A),Φ(B)]_k = [A,B]_k $ for all $A, B\in{\mathcal M}_2(\mathbb F)$ if and only if there exist a functional $h :{\mathcal M}_2(\mathbb F) \rightarrow {\mathbb F}$ and a sc…
We give an effective bound of the joint spectral radius $ρ(Σ)$ for a finite set $Σ$ of nonnegative matrices: For every $n$, \[ \sqrt[n]{\left(\frac{V}{UD}\right)^{D} \max_C \max_{i,j\in C} \max_{A_1,\dots,A_n\inΣ}(A_1\dots A_n)_{i,j}} \le ρ(Σ) \le \sqrt[n]{D \max_C \max_{i,j\in C} \max_{A_1,\dots,A_n\inΣ}(A_1\dots A_n)_{i,j}}, \] where $D\times D$ is the dimension of the matrices, $U,V$ are respectively the largest entry and the smallest entry over all the positive entries of the matrices in $Σ$, and $C$ is taken over all strongly connected components in the dependency graph. The dependency gr…
We propose a boundary regularity condition for the $M_n(\mathbb{C})$-valued subordination functions in free probability to prove the local limit theorem and delocalization of eigenvectors for polynomials in two random matrices. We prove this through estimating the pair of $M_n(\mathbb{C})$-valued approximate subordination functions for the sum of two $M_n(\mathbb{C})$-valued random matrices $γ_1\otimes C_N+γ_2\otimes U_N^*D_NU_N$, where $C_N$, $D_N$ are deterministic diagonal matrices, and $U_N$ is Haar unitary.
Let M be a b*b nonzero {0,1}-matrix. Let ρ(M) be its spectral radius and let |M^n| be the norm of its n-th iteration. In the case ρ(M)>1, we see from the spectral radius formula that {|M^n|}_{n=1}^\infty tends to \infty exponentially as n to \infty. In the case ρ(M)=1, {|M^n|}_{n=1}^\infty can be bounded or tend to \infty depending on M. The fine behavior of this sequence is completely characterized in the present paper.
For positive semi-definite block-matrix $M,$ we say that $M$ is P.S.D. and we write $M=\begin{pmatrix} A \& X\\ {X^*} \& B\end{pmatrix} \in {\mathbb{M}}\_{n+m}^+$, with $A\in {\mathbb{M}}\_n^+$, $B \in {\mathbb{M}}\_m^+.$ The focus is on studying the consequences of a decomposition lemma due to C.~Bourrin and the main result is extending the class of P.S.D. matrices $M$ written by blocks of same size that satisfies the inequality: $\|M\|\le \|A+B\|$ for all symmetric norms.
In this note we study and obtain factorization theorems for colorings of matrices and Grassmannians over $\mathbb{R}$ and ${\mathbb{C}}$, which can be considered metric versions of the Dual Ramsey Theorem for Boolean matrices and of the Graham-Leeb-Rothschild Theorem for Grassmannians over a finite field.
