We give tight upper bounds on the numerical range of square matrices in terms of their Frobenius (Euclidian) norm and a combinatorial parameter similar to the clique number of graphs. Our results imply a concise form of the fundamental theorem of Turan in extremal graph theory.
In a previous paper we completely described cyclotomic matrices--integer symmetric matrices of spectral radius at most 2. In this paper we find all minimal noncyclotomic matrices. As a consequence, we are able to determine all integer symmetric matrices of spectral radius at most 2.019, and to determine all integer symmetric matrices whose Mahler measure is at most 1.3. In particular we solve the strong version of Lehmer's problem for integer symmetric matrices: all noncyclotomic matrices have Mahler measure at least "Lehmer's number" 1.17628... .
In this paper, we give upper and lower bounds for the spectral radius of a nonnegative irreducible matrix and characterize the equality cases. These bounds theoretically improve and generalize some known results of Duan et al.[X. Duan, B. Zhou, Sharp bounds on the spectral radius of a nonnegative matrix, Linear Algebra Appl. (2013), http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.laa.2013.08.026]. Finally, applying these bounds to various matrices associated with a graph, we obtain some new upper and lower bounds on various spectral radiuses of graphs, which generalize and improve some known results.
We give upper and lower bounds for the spectral radius of a nonnegative matrix by using its average 2-row sums, and characterize the equality cases if the matrix is irreducible. We also apply these bounds to various nonnegative matrices associated with a graph, including the adjacency matrix, the signless Laplacian matrix, the distance matrix, the distance signless Laplacian matrix, and the reciprocal distance matrix.
We give an effective bound of the joint spectral radius $ρ(Σ)$ for a finite set $Σ$ of nonnegative matrices: For every $n$, \[ \sqrt[n]{\left(\frac{V}{UD}\right)^{D} \max_C \max_{i,j\in C} \max_{A_1,\dots,A_n\inΣ}(A_1\dots A_n)_{i,j}} \le ρ(Σ) \le \sqrt[n]{D \max_C \max_{i,j\in C} \max_{A_1,\dots,A_n\inΣ}(A_1\dots A_n)_{i,j}}, \] where $D\times D$ is the dimension of the matrices, $U,V$ are respectively the largest entry and the smallest entry over all the positive entries of the matrices in $Σ$, and $C$ is taken over all strongly connected components in the dependency graph. The dependency gr…
We show a simple method for constructing larger matrices but preserving the spectral radius. This yields a sufficient criteria for two square matrices of arbitrary dimension have the same spectral radius, a way to compare spectral radii of two matrices, and a way to derive new upper and lower bounds on spectral radius which give the standard row sum bounds as a special case.
We investigate pattern-avoiding (0,1)-matrices as generalizations of pattern-avoiding permutations. Our emphasis is on 123-avoiding and 321-avoiding patterns for which we obtain exact results as to the maximum number of 1's such matrices can have. We also give algorithms when carried out in all possible ways, construct all of the pattern-avoiding matrices of these two types.
We provide the first example of a sign pattern $S$ for which there exist orthogonal matrices $Q_1$ and $Q_2$ with sign pattern $S$ such that $\det Q_1=1$ and $\det Q_2=-1$. The existence of such matrices is raised by C. Waters in {"Sign Pattern Matrices That Allow Orthogonality"}, Linear Algebra and Its Applications, 235:1-13 (1996).
We initiate a study of the zero-nonzero patterns of n by n alternating sign matrices. We characterize the row (column) sum vectors of these patterns and determine their minimum term rank. In the case of connected alternating sign matrices, we find the minimum number of nonzero entries and characterize the case of equality. We also study symmetric alternating sign matrices, in particular, those with only zeros on the main diagonal. These give rise to alternating signed graphs without loops, and we determine the maximum number of edges in such graphs. We also consider n by n alternating sign mat…
A new condition, the strong inner product property, is introduced and used to construct sign patterns of row orthogonal matrices. Using this property, infinite families of sign patterns allowing row orthogonality are found. These provide insight into the underlying combinatorial structure of row orthogonal matrices. Algorithmic techniques for verifying that a matrix has the strong inner product property are also presented. These techniques lead to a generalization of the strong inner product property and can be easily implemented using various software.
M. Aouchiche and P. Hansen proposed the distance Laplacian and the distance signless Laplacian of a connected graph [Two Laplacians for the distance matrix of a graph, LAA 439 (2013) 21{33]. In this paper, we obtain three theorems on the sharp upper bounds of the spectral radius of a nonnegative matrix, then apply these theorems to signless Laplacian matrices and the distance signless Laplacian matrices to obtain some sharp bounds on the spectral radius, respectively. We also proposed a known result about the sharp bound of the signless Laplacian spectral radius has a defect.
For a graph $G=(V,E)$ and $v_{i}\in V$, denote by $d_{i}$ the degree of vertex $v_{i}$. Let $f(x, y)>0$ be a real symmetric function in $x$ and $y$. The weighted adjacency matrix $A_{f}(G)$ of a graph $G$ is a square matrix, where the $(i,j)$-entry is equal to $\displaystyle f(d_{i}, d_{j})$ if the vertices $v_{i}$ and $v_{j}$ are adjacent and 0 otherwise. Li and Wang \cite{U9} tried to unify methods to study spectral radius of weighted adjacency matrices of graphs weighted by various topological indices. If $\displaystyle f'_{x}(x, y)\geq0$ and $\displaystyle f''_{x}(x, y)\geq0$, then $\displ…
We present several results describing the interplay between the max algebraic joint spectral radius (JSR) for compact sets of matrices and suitably defined matrix norms. In particular, we extend a classical result for the conventional algebra, showing that the JSR can be described in terms of induced norms of the matrices in the set. We also show that for a set generating an irreducible semigroup (in a cone-theoretic sense), a monotone Barabanov norm always exists. This fact is then used to show that the max algebraic JSR is locally Lipschitz continuous on the space of compact irreducible sets…
The weighted adjacency matrix $A_{f}(G)$ of a simple graph $G=(V,E)$ is the $|V|\times|V|$ matrix whose $ij$-entry equals $f(d_{i},d_j)$, where $f(x,y)$ is a symmetric function such that $f(d_i,d_j)>0$ if $ij\in E$ and $f(d_i,d_j)=0$ if $ij\notin E$ and $d_i$ is the degree of the vertex $i$. In this paper, we determine the unique graph having the largest spectral radius of $A_{f}(G)$ among all the bicyclic graphs under the assumption that $f(x,y)$ is increasing and convex in $x$ and $f(x_1,y_1)\geq f(x_2,y_2)$ when $|x_1-y_1|>|x_2-y_2|$ and $x_1+y_1=x_2+y_2$. Moreover, we determine the unique …
Let $A$ be a real matrix. The term rank of $A$ is the smallest number $t$ of lines (that is, rows or columns) needed to cover all the nonzero entries of $A$. We prove a conjecture of Li et al. stating that, if the rank of $A$ exceeds $t-3$, there is a rational matrix with the same sign pattern and rank as those of $A$. We point out a connection of the problem discussed with the Kapranov rank function of tropical matrices, and we show that the statement fails to hold in general if the rank of $A$ does not exceed $t-3$.
A digraph D is the pattern of a matrix M when D has an arc ij if and only if the ij-th entry of M is nonzero. Study the relationship between unitary matrices and their patterns is motivated by works in quantum chaology and quantum computation. In this note, we prove that if a Cayley digraph is a line digraph then it is the pattern of a unitary matrix. We prove that for any finite group with two generators there exists a set of generators such that the Cayley digraph with respect to such a set is a line digraph and hence the pattern of a unitary matrix.
The combined work of Bousquet-Mélou, Claesson, Dukes, Jelínek, Kitaev, Kubitzke and Parviainen has resulted in non-trivial bijections among ascent sequences, (2+2)-free posets, upper-triangular integer matrices, and pattern-avoiding permutations. To probe the finer behavior of these bijections, we study two types of restrictions on ascent sequences. These restrictions are motivated by our results that their images under the bijections are natural and combinatorially significant. In addition, for one restriction, we are able to determine the effect of poset duality on the corresponding ascent s…
We show that for every subset $E$ of positive density in the set of integer square-matrices with zero traces, there exists an integer $k \geq 1$ such that the set of characteristic polynomials of matrices in $E-E$ contains the set of \emph{all} characteristic polynomials of integer matrices with zero traces and entries divisible by $k$. Our theorem is derived from results by Benoist-Quint on measure rigidity for actions on homogeneous spaces.
We study the structure of 01-matrices avoiding a pattern P as an interval minor. We focus on critical P-avoiders, i.e., on the P-avoiding matrices in which changing a 0-entry to a 1-entry always creates a copy of P as an interval minor. Let Q be the 3x3 permutation matrix corresponding to the permutation 231. As our main result, we show that for every pattern P that has no rotated copy of Q as interval minor, there is a constant c(P) such that any row and any column in any critical P-avoiding matrix can be partitioned into at most c(P) intervals, each consisting entirely of 0-entries or entire…
A square matrix $M$ with real entries is said to be algebraically positive (AP) if there exists a real polynomial $p$ such that all entries of the matrix $p(M)>0$. A square sign pattern matrix $S$ is said to allow algebraic positivity if there is an algebraically positive matrix $M$ whose sign pattern class is $S$. On the other hand, $S$ is said to require algebraic positivity if any matrix $M$, having sign pattern class $S$, is algebraically positive. Motivated by open problems raised in the work of Kirkland, Qiao and Zhan (2016) on AP matrices, we list down all nonequivalent irreducible $3\t…
In this paper, we obtain the sharp upper and lower bounds for the spectral radius of a nonnegative irreducible matrix. We also apply these bounds to various matrices associated with a graph or a digraph, obtain some new results or known results about various spectral radii, including the adjacency spectral radius, the signless Laplacian spectral radius, the distance spectral radius, the distance signless Laplacian spectral radius of a graph or a digraph.
A $Cretan(4t+1)$ matrix, of order $4t+1$, is an orthogonal matrix whose elements have moduli $\leq 1$. The only $Cretan(4t+1)$ matrices previously published are for orders 5, 9, 13, 17 and 37. This paper gives infinitely many new $Cretan(4t+1)$ matrices constructed using $regular~Hadamard$ matrices, $SBIBD(4t+1,k,λ)$, weighing matrices, generalized Hadamard matrices and the Kronecker product. We introduce an inequality for the radius and give a construction for a Cretan matrix for every order $n \geq 3$.
Let ${\cal A}=\{A_1,\ldots, A_r\}$ be a partition of a set $\{1,\ldots,m\}\times\{1,\ldots, n\}$ into $r$ nonempty subsets, and $A=(a_{ij})$ be an $m\times n$ matrix. We say that $A$ has a pattern ${\cal A}$ provided that $a_{ij}=a_{i'j'}$ if and only if $(i,j),(i',j')\in A_t$ for some $t\in\{1,\ldots,r\}$. In this note we study the following function $f$ defined on the set of all $m\times n$ matrices $M$ with $s$ distinct entries: $f(M; {\cal A})$ is the smallest number of positions where the entries of $M$ need to be changed such that the resulting matrix does not have any submatrix with pat…
Handelman (J. Operator Theory, 1981) proved that if the spectral radius of a matrix $A$ is a simple root of the characteristic polynomial and is strictly greater than the modulus of any other root, then $A$ is conjugate to a matrix $Z$ some power of which is positive. In this article, we provide an explicit conjugate matrix $Z$, and prove that the spectral radius of $A$ is a simple and dominant eigenvalue of $A$ if and only if $Z$ is eventually positive. For $n\times n$ real matrices with each row-sum equal to $1$, this criterion can be declined into checking that each entry of some power is s…
Let $G=(V(G),E(G))$ be a simple graph with vertex set $V(G)=\{v_{1},v_{2},\cdots, v_{n}\}$ and edge set $E(G)$. The $p$-Sombor matrix $\mathcal{S}_{p}(G)$ of $G$ is the square matrix of order $n$ whose $(i,j)$-entry is equal to $((d_{i})^{p}+(d_{j})^{p})^{\frac{1}{p}}$ if $v_{i}\sim v_{j}$, and 0 otherwise, where $d_{i}$ denotes the degree of vertex $v_{i}$ in $G$. In this paper, we study the relationship between $p$-Sombor index $SO_{p}(G)$ and $p$-Sombor matrix $\mathcal{S}_{p}(G)$ by the $k$-th spectral moment $N_{k}$ and the spectral radius of $\mathcal{S}_{p}(G)$. Then we obtain some boun…
Given a real symmetric $n\times n$ matrix, the sepr-sequence $t_1\cdots t_n$ records information about the existence of principal minors of each order that are positive, negative, or zero. This paper extends the notion of the sepr-sequence to matrices whose entries are of prescribed signs, that is, to sign patterns. A sufficient condition is given for a sign pattern to have a unique sepr-sequence, and it is conjectured to be necessary. The sepr-sequences of sign semi-stable patterns are shown to be well-structured; in some special circumstances, the sepr-sequence is enough to guarantee the sig…
The spectral $p$-norm of $r$-matrices generalizes the spectral $2$-norm of $2$-matrices. In 1911 Schur gave an upper bound on the spectral $2$-norm of $2$-matrices, which was extended in 1934 by Hardy, Littlewood, and Polya to $r$-matrices. Recently, Kolotilina, and independently the author, strengthened Schur's bound for $2$-matrices. The main result of this paper extends the latter result to $r$-matrices, thereby improving the result of Hardy, Littlewood, and Polya. The proof is based on combinatorial concepts like $r$-partite $r$-matrix and symmetrant of a matrix, which appear to be instrum…
A sign pattern matrix is a matrix whose entries are from the set $\{+,-,0\}$. If $A$ is an $m\times n$ sign pattern matrix, the qualitative class of $A$, denoted $Q(A)$, is the set of all real $m\times n$ matrices $B=[b_{i,j}]$ with $b_{i,j}$ positive (respectively, negative, zero) if $a_{i,j}$ is + (respectively, $-$, 0). The minimum rank of a sign pattern matrix $A$, denoted $\mr(A)$, is the minimum of the ranks of the real matrices in $Q(A)$. Determination of the minimum rank of a sign pattern matrix is a longstanding open problem. For the case that the sign pattern matrix has a 1-separatio…
This paper treats two topics: matrices with sign patterns and Jacobians of certain mappings. The main topic is counting the number of plus and minus coefficients in the determinant expansion of sign patterns and of these Jacobians. The paper is motivated by an approach to chemical networks initiated by Craciun and Feinberg. We also give a graph-theoretic test for determining when the Jacobian of a chemical reaction dynamics has a sign pattern.
We say a zero-one matrix $A$ avoids another zero-one matrix $P$ if no submatrix of $A$ can be transformed to $P$ by changing some ones to zeros. A fundamental problem is to study the extremal function $ex(n,P)$, the maximum number of nonzero entries in an $n \times n$ zero-one matrix $A$ which avoids $P$. To calculate exact values of $ex(n,P)$ for specific values of $n$, we need containment algorithms which tell us whether a given $n \times n$ matrix $A$ contains a given pattern matrix $P$. In this paper, we present optimal algorithms to determine when an $n \times n$ matrix $A$ contains a giv…
