We demonstrate an optical data wavelength converter based on an electrically driven photonic molecule structure comprising two coupled active silicon microring resonators. The converter, supplied by a continuous-wave (CW) microwave drive signal equal in frequency to the desired wavelength shift, replicates an input optical signal at a new wavelength. The optical coupled-cavity system matches supermode resonances to the input and wavelength-converted optical waves maximizing the conversion efficiency. Two device designs that perform wavelength up- and down-conversion by 0.19 nm (24 GHz) with -13 dB conversion efficiency and 6 GHz bandwidth; and by 0.45 nm (56 GHz) with -18 dB efficiency and 5 GHz bandwidth are demonstrated. A 4 Gbps non-return-to-zero (NRZ) optical data stream is shifted in wavelength and successfully recovered. This architecture accepts CMOS-level RF drive voltages and can be integrated in monolithic CMOS electronic-photonic platforms with a simple signal source circuit as part of a self-contained subsystem on chip that generates and carries out the wavelength conversion, requiring no high-frequency (optical or electrical) and high-power external pump input to the chip. This type of device may become a new standard element in the component libraries of silicon and CMOS photonics processes.
We demonstrate an all-optical four-channel wavelength multicasting in a coupled Silicon microring resonator system. The scheme is based on two-photon absorption induced free carrier dispersion in Silicon. The coupled cavity facilitates resonance splitting that is utilized as individual channels for multicasting. Using the split resonances, we achieve an aggregate multicasted data rate of 48 Gbps (4X12 Gbps). Moreover, we also present a detailed analysis and performance of the multicasting architecture.
We present a new technique for sensing optical cavity mode mismatch and alignment by using a cylindrical lens mode converting telescope, radio-frequency quadrant photodiodes, and a heterodyne detection scheme. We show that we can convert to the HG basis optically, measure mode mismatched and alignment signals using widely produced radio-frequency quadrant photodiodes, and obtain a feedback error sign…

Mode-division multiplexing offers a promising solution to increase the data capacity for optical communications. Waveguide mode conversion is essential for on-chip mode-division multiplexing. It is challenging to simultaneously satisfy the phase matching conditions during multiple mode conversion processes. Here, we propose a scalable design method that overcomes this limitation and realizes the simultaneous conversion of multiple modes via an all-dielectric two-di…
We demonstrate an external cavity laser formed by combining a silicon nitride photonic integrated circuit with a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier. The laser uses an alignment tolerant edge coupler formed by a multi-mode waveguide splitter right at the edge of the silicon nitride chip that relaxes the required alignment to the III-V gain chip and equally splits the power among its two output waveguides. Both the ground and first order mode are excited in the coupler and reach the quadrature condition at the waveguide junction, ensuring equal power to be coupled to both. Two high-quali…

In particular, we observe constantly high Finesse values of up to $3000$ and a linear dispersion in the presence of the membrane. We observ…
Deterministic coupling of single solid-state emitters to nanocavities is the key for integrated quantum information devices. We here fabricate a photonic crystal cavity around a preselected single silicon-vacancy color center in diamond and demonstrate modification of the emitters internal population dynamics and radiative quantum efficiency. The controlled, room-temperature cavity coupling gives rise to a resonant Purcell enhancement of the zero-phonon transition by a factor of 19, coming along with a 2.5-fold reduction of the emitter's lifetime.
Integrated semiconductor mode-locked lasers have shown promise in many applications and are readily fabricated using generic InP photonic integration platforms. On-chip optical resonators have proven to be a promising platform for generating Kerr frequency combs. Whispering gallery mode resonators are particularly attractive because of their small footprint as well as low threshold and power consumption. This performance can be attributed to two characteristics: the cavity quality factor (Q) and the cavity dispersion. The input optical field into the cavity is amplified by the cavity Q, enabling nonlinear processes to occur with low input powers. In addition, the total span of the optical comb is governed by the dispersion. In an optical cavity-based …

Realizing multiply resonant photonic crystal cavities with large free spectral range is key to achieve integrated devices with highly efficient nonlinear response, such as frequency conversion, four-wave mixing, and parametric oscillation. This task is typically difficult owing to the cavity modes' sensitivity to fabrication disorder, which makes it hard to reliably achieve a comb-like spectrum of equally spaced modes even when a perfect matching is theoretically predicted. Here we show that a comb-like spectrum of up to 8 modes with very high quality factor and diffraction limited volumes can…
