We consider the interaction of solitons in a biharmonic, beam model analogue of the well-studied $ϕ^4$ Klein-Gordon theory. Specifically, we calculate the force between a well separated kink and antikink. Knowing their accelerations as a function of separation, we can determine their motion using a simple ODE. There is good agreement between this asymptotic analysis and numerical computation. Importantly, we find the force has an exponentially-decaying oscillatory behaviour (unlike the monotonically attractive interaction in the Klein-Gordon case). Corresponding to the zeros of the force, we predict the existence of an infinite set of field theory equilibria, i.e., kink-antikink bound states. We confirm the first few of these at the PDE level, and verify their anticipated stability or instability. We also explore the implications of this interaction force in the collision between a kink and an oppositely moving antikink.
Interaction of asymmetric $ϕ^6$ kinks with a spatially localized $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric perturbation is investigated numerically. It has been shown that when the kink (antikink) hits the defect from the gain side, a final velocity of the kink decreases (increases), while for the kink and antikink coming from the opposite direction their final velocities remain unchanged. It is also found that when the kink interacts with the defect from the gain side multiple pair of the kink-antikink are formed from small amplitude waves (phonons) in the final states depending on the initial velocity of the…
We show that constrained $CP^1$ instantons, combined with the Relativistic Moduli Space approach, can accurately describe kink-antikink collisions in the $ϕ^4$ model.
We study kink-antikink collisions in the one-dimensional non-integrable scalar phi^6 model. Although the single-kink solutions for this model do not possess an internal vibrational mode, our simulations reveal a resonant scattering structure, thereby providing a counterexample to the standard belief that existence of such a mode is a necessary condition for multi-bounce resonances in general kink-antikink collisions. We investigate the two-bounce windows in detail, and present evidence that this structure is caused by existence of bound states in the spectrum of small oscillations about a comb…
We explore a class of $ϕ^{4n}$ models with kink and antikink solutions that have long-range tails on both sides, specializing to the cases with $n=2$ and $n=3$. A recently developed method of an accelerating kink ansatz is used to estimate the force between the kink and the antikink. We use state-of-the-art numerical methods to initialize the system in a kink-antikink configuration with a finite initial velocity and to evolve the system according to the equations of motion. Among these methods, we propose a computationally efficient way to initialize the velocity field of the system. Interesti…
We study kink-antikink collisions in a particular case of the double sine-Gordon model depending on only one parameter $r$. The scattering process of large kink-antikink shows the changing of the topological sector. For some parameter intervals we observed two connected effects: the production of up to five antikink-kink pairs and up to three solitary oscillations. The scattering process for small kink-antikink has several possibilities: the changing of the topological sector, one-bounce collision, two-bounce collision, or formation of a bion state. In particular, we observed for small values …
This paper investigates a model containing $ϕ^4$ kinks interacting with fermions. The fermion back-reaction is included in the equations of motion, which affects the kink-antikink collisions. We show that the fermion field generates a force that can be either attractive or repulsive. Moreover, we investigate three different scenarios, which exhibit a wide variety of behaviors including the usual scenarios observed in the $ϕ^4$ model as well as the formation of two oscillons, reflection without contact, one-bounce resonance windows, and the creation of kink-antikink pairs. We also find evidence…
We study excitations and collisions of kinks in a scalar field theory where the potential has two minima with $Z_2$ symmetry. The field potential is designed to create a square well potential in the stability equation of the kink excitations. The stability equation is analogous to the Schrödinger equation, and therefore we use quantum mechanics techniques to study the system. We modify the square well potential continuously, which allows the excitation to tunnel and consequently turns the normal modes of the kink into quasinormal modes. We study the effect of this transition, leading to energy…
In this Letter, we address the {long-range interaction} between kinks and antikinks, as well as kinks and kinks, in $φ^{2n+4}$ field theories for $n>1$. The kink-antikink interaction is generically attractive, while the kink-kink interaction is generically repulsive. We find that the force of interaction decays with the $(\frac{2n}{n-1})$th power of their separation, and we identify the general prefactor for {\it arbitrary} $n$. Importantly, we test the resulting mathematical prediction with detailed numerical simulations of the dynamic field equation, and obtain good agreement between theory …
In this work we consider model of asymmetric kinks, where the behavior of the solution in one side is different from the other side. Also, the models depend of an integer $n$ and, with the increase of $n$, the constructed kink assumes a hybrid character: a compactlike profile on one side and a kinklike profile on the other side. We investigate numerically the kink-antikink and antikink-kink dynamics, with the aim to understand the effect of the transition of the usual kink to the semi-compacton structure. The kink-antikink process shows the formation of one-bounce windows for small values of $…
We show that thick spectral walls exist in antikink-kink collisions in the $ϕ^6$ model. In this model, they are triggered by the so-called $delocalized$ $modes$ which do not exist in the single-soliton sector but emerge in antikink-kink ($\bar{K}K$) collisions. Therefore, spectral walls are a rather common phenomenon that should occur in many solitonic collisions involving non-symmetric kinks as, e.g., in the $ϕ^8$ or higher power models.
For kink-antikink scattering within the ϕ^4 non--linear field theory in one space and one time dimension resonance type configurations emerge when the relative velocity between kink and antikink falls below a critical value. It has been conjectured that the vibrational excitation of the kink would be the source for these resonances because (simplified) collective coordinate calculations, that emphasized on this excitation, qualitatively reproduced those resonances. Surprisingly a numerical study in the ϕ^6 field theory also exhibited such resonances even though it does not contain the vibratio…
In this paper the scattering between the non-topological kinks arising in a family of two-component scalar field theory models is analyzed. A winding charge is carried by these defects. As a consequence, two different classes of kink scattering processes emerge: (1) collisions between kinks that carry the same winding number and (2) scattering events between kinks with opposite winding number. The variety of scattering channels is very rich and it strongly depends on the collision velocity and the model parameter. For the first type of events, four distinct scattering channels are found: \text…

The maximal energy density that can be achieved in the collisions of the particle-like wave trains in the $ϕ^4$ model has been investigated numerically for different wave train parameters. From these results the prediction is made on how many kink-antikink pairs can be produced in wave train collisions taking into account that in collision of $N$ kinks maximal energy density is equal to $N^2/2$ for even $N$. Our numerical results are in a reasonably good agreement with the predicted maximal number of kink-antikink pairs formed in wave train collisions.
The main focus of the present work is to study quasi-one-dimensional kink-antikink stripes embedded in the two-dimensional sine-Gordon equation. Using variational techniques, we reduce the interaction dynamics between a kink and an antikink stripe on their respective time and space dependent widths and locations. The resulting reduced system of coupled equations is found to accurately describe the width and undulation dynamics of a single kink stripe as well as that of interacting ones. As an aside, we also discuss two related topics: the computational identification of the kink center and its…
In this paper, we employ the bifurcation theory of planar dynamical systems to investigate the traveling wave solutions of a 2-component of the Degasperis-Procesi equation. The expressions for smooth soliton, kink and antikink solutions are obtained.
We studied the kink-antikink collision process for the "double sine-Gordon" (DSG) equation in 1+1 dimensions at different values of the potential parameter $R>0$. For small values of $R$ we discuss the problem of resonance frequencies. We give qualitative explanation of the frequency shift in comparison with the frequency of the discrete level in the potential well of isolated kink. We show that in this region of the parameter $R$ the effective long-range interaction between kink and antikink takes place.
We investigate generalizations of the $ϕ^4$ and sine-Gordon models, including interactions with Dirac Fermions. We observe new resonance phenomena by taking the fermion back-reaction into account. First, we show that the vibrational mode responsible for the resonance structure of the $ϕ^4$ model has the same frequency as the energy of the fermion excited state when the back-reaction becomes more significant. Second, we consider the sine-Gordon model with the addition of a fermion field and find that a resonant structure appears, despite the absence of a scalar vibrational mode. The vibrational…
We borrow the form of potential of the well-known kink-bearing $φ^4$ system in the range between its two vacua and paste it repeatedly into the other ranges to introduce the periodic $φ^4$ system. The paper is devoted to providing a comparative numerical study of the properties of the two systems. Although the two systems are quite similar for a kink (antikink) solution, they usually exhibit different behaviors throughout collisions. For instance, they have different critical velocities, different results during collisions, and a different rule in their quasi-fractal structures. Their quasi-fr…
We study final states in the scattering of kinks and antikinks of the $φ^8$ field-theoretic model. We use the initial conditions in the form of two, three or four static or moving kinks. In the numerical experiments we observe a number of different processes such as emergence of static and moving oscillons, change of the kink's topological sector, scattering of an oscillon by a kink, production of kink-antikink pairs in oscillon-oscillon collisions. In antikink-kink collisions for asymmetric kinks, we found resonance phenomena -- escape windows.
We consider the interaction of solitary waves in a model involving the well-known $ϕ^4$ Klein-Gordon theory, but now bearing both Laplacian and biharmonic terms with different prefactors. As a result of the competition of the respective linear operators, we obtain three distinct cases as we vary the model parameters. In the first the biharmonic effect dominates, yielding an oscillatory inter-wave interaction; in the third the harmonic effect prevails yielding exponential interactions, while we find an intriguing linearly modulated exponential effect in the critical second case, separating the …
We study the kink-antikink scattering within the double sine-Gordon model. In the numerical simulations we found a critical value $v_{cr}$ of the initial velocity $v_{in}$, which separates two different scenarios: at $v_{in}<v_{cr}$ the kinks capture each other and form a bound state, while at $v_{in}>v_{cr}$ the kinks pass through each other and escape to infinities. We obtain non-monotonous dependence of $v_{cr}$ on the model parameter $R$. Besides that, at some initial velocities below $v_{cr}$ we observe formation and interaction of the so-called oscillons (new phenomenon), as well as esca…
In this paper, we numerically study the scattering of kinks in the noncanonical sine-Gordon model using Fourier spectral methods. The model depends on two free parameters, which control the localized inner structure in the energy density and the characteristics of the scattering potential. It has been conjectured that the kink solutions in the noncanonical model possess inner structures in their energy density, and the presence of these yields bound states and resonance structures for some relative velocities between the kink and the antikink. In the numerical study, we observed that the class…
We study collisions of coherent structures in higher-order field-theoretic models, such as the $ϕ^8$, $ϕ^{10}$ and $ϕ^{12}$ ones. The main distinguishing feature, of the example models considered herein, is that the collision arises due to the long-range interacting algebraic tails of these solitary waves. We extend the approach to suitably initialize the relevant kinks, in the additional presence of finite initial speed, in order to minimize the dispersive wave radiation potentially created by their slow spatial decay. We find that, when suitably initialized, these models still feature the mu…
We consider the (1+1)-dimensional Lorentz-symmetric field-theoretic model with logarithmic potential having a Mexican-hat form with two local minima similar to that of the quartic Higgs potential in conventional electroweak theory with spontaneous symmetry breaking and mass generation. We demonstrate that this model allows topological solutions -- kinks. We analyze the kink excitation spectrum, and show that it does not contain any vibrational modes. We also study the scattering dynamics of kinks for a wide range of initial velocities. The critical value of the initial velocity occurs in kink-…
Recent studies have emphasized the important role that a shape deformability of scalar-field models pertaining to the same class with the standard $ϕ^4$ field, can play in controlling the production of a specific type of breathing bound states so-called oscillons. In the context of cosmology, the built-in mechanism of oscillons suggests that they can affect the standard picture of scalar ultra-light dark matter. In the present work kink scatterings are investigated in a parametrized model of bistable system admitting the classical $ϕ^4$ field as an asymptotic limit, with focus on the formation…
We study some properties of kink solutions of the model with non-polynomial potential obtained by deforming the well-known $φ^6$ field model. We consider the excitation spectrum of the kink. We also discuss the properties of the `kink+antikink' system as a whole that are not inherent to a solitary kink or antikink.
We study interactions of kinks and antikinks of the $(1+1)$-dimensional $φ^8$ model. In this model, there are kinks with mixed tail asymptotics: power-law behavior at one infinity versus exponential decay towards the other. We show that if a kink and an antikink face each other in way such that their power-law tails determine the kink--antikink interaction, then the force of their interaction decays slowly, as some negative power of distance between them. We estimate the force numerically using the collective coordinate approximation, and analytically via Manton's method (making use of formula…
In this paper, we study the single kink and the kink-antikink collisions of a nonlinear beam equation bearing a fourth-derivative term. We numerically explore some of the key characteristics of the single kink both in its standing wave and in its traveling wave form. A point of emphasis is the study of kink-antikink collisions, exploring the critical velocity for single-bounce (and separation) and infinite-bounce (where the kink and antikink trap each other) windows. The relevant phenomenology turns out to be dramatically different than that of the corresponding nonlinear Klein-Gordon (i.e., $…
We compare numerical solutions to the full field equations to simplified approaches based on implementing three collective coordinates for kink-antikink interactions within the $φ^4$ and $ϕ^6$ models in one time and one space dimensions. We particularly pursue the question whether the collective coordinate approximation substantiates the conjecture that vibrational modes are important for resonance structures to occur in kink-antikink scattering.
We present several one-parameter family of higher order field theory models some of which admit explicit kink solutions with an exponential tail while others admit explicit kink solutions with a power-law tail. Various properties of these families of kink solutions are examined in detail. In particular for models harboring kink solutions with a power-law tail, we show that there is no gap between the zero mode and the beginning of the continuum in the kink stability potential. Further, by applying the recent Manton formalism, we provide estimates for the kink-kink and antikink-kink acceleratio…
The (2+1)-dimension Klein-Gordon generalised equation is numerically solved through the finite differences method. Only the sine-Gordon case is focused: kink and antikink solutions are obtained in cartesian coordinates and evidence of interaction in kink-kink collision is looked for in propagation velocity. Then the change of shape in light bullet solutions is quantified during propagation and in head-on collision. Lastly, the robustness of light bullets is verified in head-on collisions with kink, antikink, standing kink and standing breather. A 30o-collision between a light bullet and a stan…
We study the scattering of the $φ^8$ kinks off each other, namely, we consider those $φ^8$ kinks that have power-law asymptotics. The slow power-law fall-off leads to a long-range interaction between the kink and the antikink. We investigate how the scattering scenarios depend on the initial velocities of the colliding kinks. In particular, we observe the `escape windows' -- the escape of the kinks after two or more collisions, explained by the resonant energy exchange between the translational and vibrational modes. In order to elucidate this phenomenon, we also analyze the excitation spectra…

In this paper the study of collisions between kinks arising in the family of MSTB models is addressed. Phenomena such as elastic kink reflection, mutual annihilation, kink-antikink transmutation and inelastic reflection are found and depend on the impact velocity.
It was recently proposed a novel discretization for nonlinear Klein-Gordon field theories in which the resulting lattice preserves the topological (Bogomol'nyi) lower bound on the kink energy and, as a consequence, has no Peierls-Nabarro barrier even for large spatial discretizations (h~1.0). It was then suggested that these ``topological discrete systems'' are a natural choice for the numerical study of continuum kink dynamics. Giving particular emphasis to the phi^4 theory, we numerically investigate kink-antikink scattering and breather formation in these topological lattices. Our results i…
In this paper the scattering between a wobbling kink and a wobbling antikink in the standard $ϕ^4$ model is numerically investigated. The dependence of the final velocities, wobbling amplitudes and frequencies of the scattered kinks on the collision velocity and on the initial wobbling amplitude is discussed. The fractal structure becomes more intricate due to the emergence of new resonance windows and the splitting of those arising in the non-excited kink scattering. Outside this phase the final wobbling amplitude exhibits a linear dependence of the collision velocity whereas the final freque…
We present a computational analysis of the long-range interactions of solitary waves in higher-order field theories. Our vehicle of choice is the $φ^8$ field theory, although we explore similar issues in example $φ^{10}$ and $φ^{12}$ models. In particular, we discuss the fundamental differences between the latter higher-order models and the standard $φ^4$ model. Upon establishing the power-law asymptotics of the model's solutions' approach towards one of the steady states, we make the case that such asymptotics require particular care in setting up multi-soliton initial conditions. A naive imp…
We look at BPS systems involving two interacting Sine-Gordon like fields both when one of them has a kink solution and the second one either a kink or an antikink solution. The interaction between the two fields is controlled by a parameter $λ$ which has to satisfy $| λ|< 2$. We then take these solitonic static solutions (with solitons well localised) and construct from them systems involving two solitons in each field (kinks and antikinks) and then use them as initial conditions for their evolution in Lorentz covariant versions of such models. This way we study their interactions and compare …
The two major effects observed in collisions of the continuum $ϕ^4$ kinks are (i) the existence of critical collision velocity above which the kinks always emerge from the collision and (ii) the existence of the escape windows for multi-bounce collisions with the velocity below the critical one, associated with the energy exchange between the kink's internal and translational modes. The potential merger (for sufficiently low collision speeds) of the kink and antikink produces a bion with oscillation frequency $ω_B$, which constantly radiates energy, since its higher harmonics are always within…
In this report, the various 1D single soliton and multi-soliton solutions of the Sine-Gordon equation are explored. First the topological kink solitons and their properties for the Sine-Gordon, as well as the $ϕ^{4}$ model are investigated. This includes energy and momentum conservation laws for both models, as well as static kinks and antikinks. The Bogomol'nyi equation and the importance of Lorentz invariance are also discussed. Then in the second half, the focus is on Sine-Gordon multi-kink solutions, which are found by a separation of variables method rather than using inverse scattering o…
We consider kink-antikink collisions in the topological discrete sine-Gordon system. We find that the TDSG kink supports extra internal modes of vibration and this results in resonance effects of the kind seen for the continuum phi^4 theory.
The scattering of kinks and low-frequency breathers of the nonlinear sine-Gordon (SG) equation on a spatially localized $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric perturbation (defect) with a balanced gain and loss is investigated numerically. It is demonstrated that if a kink passes the defect, it always restores its initial momentum and energy and the only effect of the interaction with the defect is a phase shift of the kink. A kink approaching the defect from the gain side always passes, while in the opposite case it must have sufficiently large initial momentum to pass through the defect instead of being t…
We consider a novel one dimensional model of a logarithmic potential which has super-super-exponential kink profiles as well as kink tails. We provide analytic kink solutions of the model -- it has 3 kinks, 3 mirror kinks and the corresponding antikinks. While some of the kink tails are super-super-exponential, some others are super-exponential whereas the remaining ones are exponential. The linear stability analysis reveals that there is a gap between the zero mode and the onset of continuum. Finally, we compare this potential and its kink solutions with those of very high order field theorie…
Antikink-kink ( $\bar{\rm K} $$ {\rm K}$) collisions in the $ϕ^6$ model exhibit resonant scattering although the $ϕ^6$ kinks do not support any bound states to which energy could be transferred. In Phys. Rev. Lett. 107 (2011) 091602 it was conjectured that, instead, energy is transferred to a collective bound mode of the full $\bar{\rm K} $$ {\rm K}$ configuration. Here we present further strong evidence for this conjecture. Further, we construct a collective coordinate model (CCM) for $\bar{\rm K} $$ {\rm K}$ scattering based on this collective bound mode trapped between the $\bar{\rm K} $$ {…
We propose a system of sine-Gordon equations, with the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry represented by balanced gain and loss in them. The equations are coupled by sine-field terms and first-order derivatives. The sinusoidal coupling stems from local interaction between adjacent particles in the coupled Frenkel-Kontorova (FK) chains and related sine-lattices, while the cross-derivative coupling, which was not considered before, is induced by \emph{three-particle} interactions, provided that the particles in the parallel FK\ chains move in different directions. Nonlinear wave structures are then studied…
