We look at BPS systems involving two interacting Sine-Gordon like fields both when one of them has a kink solution and the second one either a kink or an antikink solution. The interaction between the two fields is controlled by a parameter $λ$ which has to satisfy $| λ|< 2$. We then take these solitonic static solutions (with solitons well localised) and construct from them systems involving two solitons in each field (kinks and antikinks) and then use them as initial conditions for their evolution in Lorentz covariant versions of such models. This way we study their interactions and compare them with similar interactions involving only one Sine-Gordon field. In particular, we look at the behaviour of two static kinks in each field (which for one field repel each other) and of a system involving kinks and anti-kinks (which for one field attract each other) and look how their behaviour depends on the strength of the interaction $λ$ between the two fields. Our simulations have led us to look again at the static BPS solutions of systems involving more fields. We have found that such ostensibly 'static' BPS solutions can exhibit small motions due to the excitation of their zero modes. These excitations arise from small unavoidable numerical errors (the overall translation is cancelled by the conservation of momentum) but as systems of two or more fields have more that one zero mode such motions can be generated and are extremely small. The energy of our systems has been conserved to within $10^{-5}\%$.
We rederive the nonrelativistic Lagrangian for the low energy dynamics of 1/4 BPS dyons by considering the time dependent fluctuations around classical 1/4 BPS configurations. The relevant fluctuations are the zero modes of the underlying 1/2 BPS monopoles.
In N=2 SYM theory with matter non-conservation of the S-charge of a BPS state under monodromies leads to so-called BPS state "decay". A mechanism for such a behavior on the semiclassical level could be established through consideration of soliton-fermion bound state. Solutions to classical equations of motion allow to observe the BPS state "decay" in vivo.
We study some aspects of enhanced gauge symmetries in F-theory compactified on K3. We find open string configurations connecting various 7-branes which represent stable BPS states. In this approach we recover $D_n$ and $E_n$ gauge groups previously found from an analysis of sigularities of the moduli space of elliptically fibered K3 manifolds as well as examples of non-perturbative realizations of $A_n$ groups.
In this paper, we show that the localization of three-dimensional N = 2 supersymmetric Chern-Simons theory on the ellipsoid-like squashed sphere is related to a nontrivial knot structure called torus knot. More precisely, we can capture the three sphere as the nontrivial so-called Seifert fibrations by regarding 1/2 BPS Wilson loops as U(1) fibers. The topology of knotted 1/2 BPS Wilson loops is controlled by squashing parameters. We calculate the 1/2 BPS condition of the Wilson loop and find perfect agreement with known results. We also remark on the level shift and framing anomaly.
We discuss a phenomenon in supersymmetric field theory and string theory whereby compactifying one of the dimensions of spacetime on an arbitrarily large circle can cause BPS states to become unstable. We exemplify this by considering 5d N=1 theories on a circle and their embeddings into M-theory via geometric engineering. This implicates a subtle relationship between the BPS states of M-theory on a Calabi-Yau threefold, X, and those of type IIA on X with an arbitrary value of the coupling constant. Intuition for this phenomenon is provided by considering F-theory on a complex K3 surface in a …
We formulate the problem of counting 1/16 BPS states of N = 4 Yang Mills theory as the enumeration of the local cohomology of an operator acting on holomorphic fields on C^2. We study aspects of the enumeration of this cohomology at finite N, especially for operators constructed only out of products of covariant derivatives of scalar fields, and compare our results to the states obtained from the quantization of giant gravitons and dual giants. We physically interpret the holomorphic fields that enter our conditions for supersymmetry semi-classically by deriving a set of Bogomolnyi equations f…
We look at simple BPS systems involving more than one field. We discuss the conditions that have to be imposed on various terms in Lagrangians involving many fields to produce BPS systems and then look in more detail at the simplest of such cases. We analyse in detail BPS systems involving 2 interacting Sine-Gordon like fields, both when one of them has a kink solution and the second one either a kink or an antikink solution. We take their solitonic static solutions and use them as initial conditions for their evolution in Lorentz covariant versions of such models. We send these structures tow…
In a recent paper (hep-th/0703157), Sen studied unstable D-branes in NS5-branes backgrounds and argued that in the strong curvature regime the universal open string tachyon (on D-branes of the wrong dimensionality) and the geometric tachyon (on D-branes that are BPS in flat space but not in this background) may become equivalent. We study in this note an example of a non-BPS suspended D-brane vs. a BPS D-brane at equal distance between two fivebranes. We use boundary worldsheet CFT methods to show that these two unstable branes are identical.
We write down two E11 invariant conditions which at low levels reproduce the known half BPS conditions for type II theories. These new conditions contain, in addition to the familiar central charges, an infinite number of further charges which are required in an underlying theory of strings and branes. We comment on the application of this work to higher derivative string corrections.
We review the derivation of a noncommutative version of the nonlinear sigma model on $\CPn$ and it's soliton solutions for finite $θ$ emphasizing the similarities it bears to the GMS scalar field theory. It is also shown that unlike the scalar theory, some care needs to be taken in defining the topological charge of BPS solitons of the theory due to nonvanishing surface terms in the energy functional. Finally it is shown that, like its commutative analogue, the noncommutative $\CPn$-model also exhibits a non-BPS sector. Unlike the commutative case however, there are some surprises in the nonco…
We investigate the existence of first-order vortices inherent to both the Maxwell-Chern-Simons-Higgs and the Maxwell-Chern-Simons-$CP(2)$ models extended via the inclusion of an extra scalar sector which plays the role of a source field. For both cases, we focus our attention on the time-independent configurations with radial symmetry which can be obtained through the implementation of the so-called Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) prescription. In this sense, in order to solve the corresponding first-order differential equations, we introduce some particular scenarios which are driven by …
It is shown that a method for constructing exact multi-solitonic solutions of the coupled BPS equations in the duality-based generalization of the hermitean matrix model, which was put forward in a recent paper, is not correct.
We discuss explicit examples of BPS solutions in four-dimensional N=2 supergravity with R^2-interactions. We demonstrate how to construct solutions by iteration. Generically, the presence of higher-curvature interactions leads to non-static spacetime line elements. We comment on the existence of horizons for multi-centered solutions.
We study a family of circular BPS Wilson loops in N=6 super Chern-Simons-matter theories, generalizing the usual 1/2-BPS circle. The scalar and fermionic couplings depend on two deformation parameters and these operators can be considered as the ABJ(M) counterpart of the DGRT latitudes defined in N=4 SYM. We perform a complete two-loop analysis of their vacuum expectation value, discuss the framing dependence and propose a general relation with cohomologically equivalent bosonic operators. We make an all-loop proposal for computing the Bremsstrahlung function associated to the 1/2-BPS cusp in …
We construct smooth supergravity solutions describing a BPS black ring with a BPS black hole centered at an arbitrary distance above the ring. We find that as one moves the black hole the entropy of the ring remains constant, but the angular momentum coming from the supergravity fluxes changes. Our solutions also show that in order to merge a BPS black ring with a BPS black hole one has to increase one of the angular momenta of the ring, and that the result of the merger is always a BMPV black hole. We also find a class of mergers that are thermodynamically reversible, and comment on their phy…
We explicitly construct a configuration of ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetry Yang-Mills theory with gauge group $U(N)$ on an interval on length $L$ with a D5-like boundary condition on one end and an NS5-like boundary condition on the other. For $N>1$, such a configuration violates the $s$-rule and is non-supersymmetric. We compute the energy relative to the BPS bound of these configurations and find that it is proportional to $N(N^2-1) g_{YM4}^{-2} L^{-3}$.
We construct a supersymmetric extension of the two dimensional Kaluza-Klein-reduced gravitational Chern-Simons term, and globally study its solutions, labelled by mass and U(1) charge c. The kink solution is BPS, and in an appropriate conformal frame all solutions asymptotically approach AdS. The thermodynamics of the Hawking effect yields interesting behavior for the specific heat and hints at a Hawking-Page-like transition at T_{critical} \sim c^{3/2}. We address implications for higher dimensions ("oxidation"), in particular D=3,4 and 11, and comment briefly on AdS/CFT aspects of the kink.
In three dimensional ${\cal N}=4$ Chern-Simons-matter theories two independent fermionic Wilson loop operators can be defined, which preserve half of the supersymmetry charges and are cohomologically equivalent at classical level. We compute their three-loop expectation value in a convenient color sector and prove that the degeneracy is uplifted by quantum corrections. We expand the matrix model prediction in the same regime and by comparison we conclude that the quantum 1/2 BPS Wilson loop is the average of the two operators. We provide an all-loop argument to support this claim at any order.…
We study the properties of a D-brane in the presence of $k$ NS5 branes. The Dirac-Born-Infeld action describing the dynamics of this D-brane is very similar to that of a non-BPS D-brane in ten dimensions. As the D-brane approaches the fivebranes, its equation of state approaches that of a pressureless fluid. In non-BPS D-brane case this is considered as an evidence for the decay of the D-brane into ``tachyon matter''. We show that in our case similar behavior is the consequence of the motion of the D-brane. In particular in the rest frame of the moving D-brane the equation of state is that of …
We prove that the NS cubic superstring field theories are classically equivalent, regardless of the choice of Y_{-2} in their definition, and illustrate it by an explicit evaluation of the action of Erler's solution. We then turn to examine this solution. First, we explain that its cohomology is trivial also in the Ramond sector. Then, we show that the boundary state corresponding to it is identically zero. We conclude that this solution is indeed a closed string vacuum solution despite the absence of a tachyon field on the BPS D-brane.
We study the possible BPS domain wall junction configurations for general polynomial superpotentials of N=1 supersymmetric Wess-Zumino models in D=4. We scan the parameter space of the superpotential and find different possible BPS states for different values of the deformation parameters and present our results graphically. We comment on the domain walls in F/M/IIA theories obtained from the Calabi-Yau fourfolds with isolated singularities and a background flux.
We explain a new construction of self-dual string solutions to the non-abelian two-form self-duality equation proposed in \cite{CK}. This class of self-dual strings is determined by the BPS monopoles in four-dimensions and the self dual string charge is given by the charge of the monopole. Our construction covers the SO(4) invariant self-dual string solutions found previously. We have also constructed, based on the 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole, a singular solution that describes two finitely separated M5-branes meeting midway in between. We comment that as BPS monopoles are generally given by th…
We construct and explore BPS states that preserve 1/4 of supersymmetry in N=4 Yang-Mills theories. Such states are also realized as three-pronged strings ending on D3-branes. We correct the electric part of the BPS equation and relate its solutions to the unbroken abelian gauge group generators. Generic 1/4-BPS solitons are not spherically symmetric, but consist of two or more dyonic components held apart by a delicate balance between static electromagnetic force and scalar Higgs force. The instability previously found in three-pronged string configurations is due to excessive repulsion by one…
We present an analytic solution for tachyon condensation on a non-BPS D-brane in Berkovits' open superstring field theory. The solution is presented as a product of $2\times 2$ matrices in two distinct $GL_2$ subgroups of the open string star algebra. All string fields needed for computation of the nonpolynomial action can be derived in closed form, and the action produces the expected non-BPS D-brane tension in accordance with Sen's conjecture. We also comment on how D-brane charges may be encoded in the topology of the tachyon vacuum gauge orbit.
We analyze a broad class of stationary solutions with residual N=1 supersymmetry of four-dimensional N=2 supergravity theories with terms quadratic in the Weyl tensor. These terms are encoded in a holomorphic function, which determines the most relevant part of the action and which plays a central role in our analysis. The solutions include extremal black holes and rotating field configurations, and may have multiple centers. We prove that they are expressed in terms of harmonic functions associated with the electric and magnetic charges carried by the solutions by a proper generalization of t…
We describe rules for computing a homology theory of knots and links in $\mathbb{R}^3$. It is derived from the theory of framed BPS states bound to domain walls separating two-dimensional Landau-Ginzburg models with (2,2) supersymmetry. We illustrate the rules with some sample computations, obtaining results consistent with Khovanov homology. We show that of the two Landau-Ginzburg models discussed in this context by Gaiotto and Witten one, (the so-called Yang-Yang-Landau-Ginzburg model) does not lead to topological invariants of links while the other, based on a model with target space equal …
We construct unstable system D8-brane+D8-antibrane as a kink solution on world-volume of non-BPS D9-brane in Type IIA theory. Further we will make other checks confirming validity of our appro.
We study a two-parameter family of Wilson loop operators in N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory which interpolates smoothly between the 1/2 BPS line or circle and a pair of antiparallel lines. These observables capture a natural generalization of the quark-antiquark potential. We calculate these loops on the gauge theory side to second order in perturbation theory and in a semiclassical expansion in string theory to one-loop order. The resulting determinants are given in integral form and can be evaluated numerically for general values of the parameters or analytically in a systematic expansi…
Massive maximally-supersymmetric sigma models are shown to exhibit multiple static kink-domain wall solutions that preserve 1/2 of the supersymmetry. The kink moduli space admits a natural Kahler metric. We examine in some detail the case when the target of the sigma model is given by the co-tangent bundle of CP^n equipped with the Calabi metric, and we show that there exist BPS solutions corresponding to n kinks at arbitrary separation. We also describe how 1/4-BPS charged and intersecting domain walls are described in the low-energy dynamics on the kink moduli space. We comment on the simila…
We show that the standard Skyrme model without pion mass term can be expressed as a sum of two BPS submodels, i.e., of two models whose static field equations, independently, can be reduced to first order equations. Further, these first order (BPS) equations have nontrivial solutions, at least locally. These two submodels, however, cannot have common solutions. Our findings also shed some light on the rational map approximation. Finally, we consider certain generalisations of the BPS submodels.
We study the low energy effective theory describing the dynamics of D-particles. This corresponds to the quantum mechanical system obtained by dimensional reduction of $9+1$ dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory to $0+1$ dimensions and can be interpreted as the non relativistic limit of the Born-Infeld action. We study the system of two like-charged D-particles and find evidence for the existence of non-BPS states whose mass grows like $λ^{1/3}$ over the BPS mass. We give a string interpretation of this phenomenon in terms of a linear potential generated by strings stretching from the t…
We compute the one-loop effective action of string configurations embedded in $AdS_4\times\mathbb{CP}^3$ which are dual to $\frac{1}{6}$-BPS latitude Wilson Loops in the ABJM theory. To avoid ambiguities in the string path integral we subtract the $\frac{1}{2}$-BPS case. The one-loop determinants are computed by Fourier-decomposing the two dimensional operators and then using the Gel'fand-Yaglom method. We comment on various aspects related to the regularization procedure, showing the cancellation of a hierarchy of divergences. After taking into account an IR anomaly from a change in topology,…
We study BPS solutions for a self-dual string and a neutral string in M5-brane worldvolume theory with constant three-form field. We further generalize such solitons to superpose with a calibrated surface. We also study a traveling wave on a calibrated surface in the constant three-form field background.
Using the BPS Lagrangian method we show that all known BPS submodels of the generalized Skyrme model, with a particular ansatz for the fields content, can be devided into three groups based on the (effective) number of derivative-terms in the BPS submodels. We are able to derive rigorously the Bogomolny's equations of those BPS submodels. The resulting Bogomolny's equations, along with possible constraint equations, are in general forms in which some of the known BPS submodels may contain other possible non-trivial (non-vacuum) solutions then the ones found in the literature. Furthermore, we d…
We review the boundary state description of the non-BPS D-branes in the type I string theory and show that the only stable configurations are the D-particle and the D-instanton. We also compute the gauge and gravitational interactions of the non-BPS D-particles and compare them with the interactions of the dual non-BPS particles of the heterotic string finding complete agreement. In this way we provide further dynamical evidence of the heterotic/type I duality.
We construct an exact soliton, which represents a BPS Dp-brane, in a boundary string field theory action of infinitely many non-BPS D(p-1)-branes. Furthermore, we show that this soliton can be regarded as an exact soliton in the full string field theory. The world-volume theory of the BPS Dp-brane constructed in this way becomes usual gauge theory on commutative R^{p+1}, instead of non-commutative plane. We also construct a D$p$-brane from non-BPS D(p-n)-branes by the ABS like configuration. We confirm that the Dp-brane has correct RR charges and the tension.
We introduce the spiked monopole, which is a 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole with two charged scalar Higgs fields, of which one enjoys a quartic self-interaction. The free Higgs field behaves as in a BPS monopole, reducing the inter-monopole repulsion. The other Higgs has a spiked profile similar to a non-BPS monopole. Using the methods from numerical relativity recently adapted to the Yang-Mills-Higgs theory by Vachaspati, we simulate the interactions of such monopoles. During the long lifetime of these simulations the individual monopoles are stable. We find that they are always repulsive, with a…
We propose a modified mode-expansion of the bulk fields in a BPS domain wall background to obtain the effective theory on the wall. The broken SUSY is nonlinearly realized on each mode defined by our mode-expansion. Our work clarifies a relation between two different approaches to derive the effective theory on a BPS wall, {\it i.e.} the nonlinear realization approach and the mode-expansion approach. We also discuss a further modification that respects the Lorentz and $U(1)_R$ symmetries broken by the wall.
Extremal charged black holes are BPS solutions. It is commonly thought that their nonextremal counterparts are not. Further, experience with BPS solutions in flat spacetime suggests that all BPS solutions are supersymmetric; i.e. that they are invariant under some supersymmetry charges of either the original field theory or an appropriately extended version thereof. Using nonextremal Reissner-Nordström black holes as counterexamples, we show that neither of these expectations is universally valid. These black holes correspond to a one-parameter family of BPS solutions. By showing that, subject…
For D=4 BPS state construction, counting, and wall-crossing thereof, quiver quantum mechanics offers two alternative approaches, the Coulomb phase and the Higgs phase, which sometimes produce inequivalent counting. The authors have proposed, in arXiv:1205.6511, two conjectures on the precise relationship between the two, with some supporting evidences. Higgs phase ground states are naturally divided into the Intrinsic Higgs sector, which is insensitive to wall-crossings and thus an invariant of quiver, plus a pulled-back ambient cohomology, conjectured to be an one-to-one image of Coulomb phas…
We localize the four-dimensional N=4 super Yang-Mills theory on a four-sphere to the two-dimensional constrained Hitchin/Higgs-Yang-Mills (cHYM) theory on a two-sphere S^2. We show that expectation values of certain 1/8 BPS supersymmetric Wilson loops on S^2 in the 4d N=4 SYM is captured by the 2d cHYM theory. We further argue that expectation values of Wilson loops in the cHYM theory agree with the prescription "two-dimensional bosonic Yang-Mills excluding instanton contributions". Hence, we support the recent conjecture by Drukker, Giombi, Ricci and Trancanelli on the 1/8 BPS Wilson loops on…
We consider a double OPE limit of the planar four-point function of stress tensor multiplets in N = 4 SYM theory. Loop integrands for this correlator have been constructed to very high order, but the corresponding integrals are explicitly known only up to three loops. Fortunately, the double coincidence limit of the four-loop integrals can be found by the method of expansion by regions, which reduces the problem of computing the four-point integrals to the evaluation of a large set of massless propagator integrals. These can in turn be evaluated by IBP reduction. The OPE limit of the stress te…
We complete the study of static BPS, asymptotically AdS$_4$ black holes within N=2 FI-gauged supergravity and where the scalar manifold is a homogeneous very special Kahler manifold. We find the analytic form for the general solution to the BPS equations, the horizon appears as a double root of a particular quartic polynomial whereas in previous work this quartic polynomial further factored into a pair of double roots. A new and distinguishing feature of our solutions is that the phase of the supersymmetry parameter varies throughout the black hole. The general solution has $2n_v$ independent …
We study the possible BPS Wilson loops in three-dimensional ${\cal N}=4$ Chern-Simons-matter theory which involve only the gauge field and bilinears of the scalars. Previously known examples are the analogues of the Gaiotto-Yin loops preserving four supercharges and "latitude" loops preserving two. We carry out a careful classification and find, in addition, loops preserving three supercharges, further inequivalent classes of loops preserving two supercharges and loops preserving a single supercharge. For each of the classes of loops, we present a representative example and analyse their full …
We demonstrate that in the supersymmetric extensions of a class of generalized (or K) field theories introduced recently, the static energy satisfies a BPS bound in each topological sector. Further, the corresponding soliton solutions saturate the bound. We also find strong indications that the BPS bound shows up in the SUSY algebra as a central extension, as is the case in the well-known supersymmetric field theories with standard kinetic terms.
We apply the BPS Lagrangian method~\cite{Atmaja:2015umo} to derive BPS equations of monopole and dyon in the $SU(2)$ Yang-Mills-Higgs model, Nakamula-Shiraishi models, and their Generalized versions. We argue that by identifying the effective fields of scalar field, $f$, and of time-component gauge field, $j$, explicitly by $j=βf$ with $β$ is a real constant, the usual BPS equations for dyon can be obtained naturally. We validate this identification by showing that both Euler-Lagrange equations for $f$ and $j$ are identical in the BPS limit. The value of $β$ is bounded to $|β|<1$ due to realit…
The complete forms of the S-matrix elements of a transverse scalar field, two world volume gauge fields, and a Potential $C_{n-1}$ Ramond-Ramond (RR) form field are investigated. In order to find an infinite number of $t,s, (t+s+u)$-channel bulk singularity structures of this particular mixed open-closed amplitude, we employ all the conformal field theory techniques to $<V_{C^{-2}}V_{ϕ^{0}} V_{A^{0}} V_{A^{0}}>$, exploring all the entire correlation functions and all order $α'$ contact interactions to these supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) couplings. Singularity and contact term comparisons wit…
By dealing with the evaluation of string theory correlators of $<V_C V_T V_{\barΨ} V_Ψ>$, the complete and closed form of the amplitude of two fermion fields, one tachyon and one closed string Ramond-Ramond field in type IIB superstring theory is found. Specifically by comparing infinite tachyon poles in field theory amplitude with infinite tachyon poles of the S-matrix of string amplitude (for $p+1=n$ case), all the infinite higher derivative corrections of two tachyons and two fermions (in type IIB) to all orders of $α'$ have been discovered. Using these new couplings, we are able to produce…
Within the class of field theories with the field contents of the Skyrme model, one submodel can be found which consists of the square of the baryon current and a potential term only. For this submodel, a Bogomolny bound exists and the static soliton solutions saturate this bound. Further, already on the classical level, this BPS Skyrme model reproduces some features of the liquid drop model of nuclei. Here, we investigate the model in more detail and, besides, we perform the rigid rotor quantization of the simplest Skyrmion (the nucleon). In addition, we discuss indications that the viability…
We show that the BPS property is a generic feature of field theories in (1+1) dimensions, which does not put any restriction on the action. Here, by BPS solutions we understand static solutions which i) obey a lower-order Bogomolny-type equation in addition to the Euler-Lagrange equation, ii) have an energy which only depends on a topological charge and the global properties of the fields, but not on the local behaviour (coordinate dependence) of the solution, and iii) have zero pressure density. Concretely, to accomplish this program we study the existence of BPS solutions in field theories w…
