In this paper, we study the single kink and the kink-antikink collisions of a nonlinear beam equation bearing a fourth-derivative term. We numerically explore some of the key characteristics of the single kink both in its standing wave and in its traveling wave form. A point of emphasis is the study of kink-antikink collisions, exploring the critical velocity for single-bounce (and separation) and infinite-bounce (where the kink and antikink trap each other) windows. The relevant phenomenology turns out to be dramatically different than that of the corresponding nonlinear Klein-Gordon (i.e., $ϕ^4$) model. Our computations show that for small initial velocities, the kink and antikink reflect nearly elastically without colliding. For an intermediate interval of velocities, the two waves trap each other, while for large speeds a single inelastic collision between them takes place. Lastly, we briefly touch upon the use of collective coordinates (CC) method and their predictions of the relevant phenomenology. When one degree of freedom is used in the CC approach, the results match well the numerical ones for small values of initial velocity. However, for bigger values of initial velocity, it is inferred that more degrees of freedom need to be self-consistently included in order to capture the collision phenomenology.
We show that a number of nonlinear equations including symmetric as well as asymmetric $ϕ^4$, modified Korteweg de Vries (MKdV), mixed KdV-MKdV, nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS), quadratic-cubic NLS as well as higher order neutral scalar field theories, higher order KdV-MKdV and higher order quadratic-cubic NLS admit superposed periodic kink and pulse solutions and some of them also admit superposed hyperbolic kink solutions.
For a large number of real nonlinear equations, either continuous or discrete, integrable or nonintegrable, uncoupled or coupled, we show that whenever a real nonlinear equation admits kink solutions in terms of $\tanh βx$, where $β$ is the inverse of the kink width, it also admits solutions in terms of the PT-invariant combinations $\tanh 2βx \pm i \sech 2 βx$, i.e. the kink width is reduced by half to that of the real kink solution. We show that both the kink and the PT-invariant kink are linearly stable and obtain expressions for the zero mode in the case of several PT-invariant kink soluti…
We show that a number of nonlocal nonlinear equations including the Ablowitz-Musslimani and the Yang variant of the nonlocal nonlinear Schröd-inger (NLS) equation, nonlocal modified Korteweg de Vries (mKdV) equation as well as the nonlocal Hirota equation admit novel kinklike and pulselike superposed periodic solutions. Further, we show that the nonlocal mKdV equation, in addition also admits the superposed (hyperbolic) kink-antikink solution. Besides, we show that while the nonlocal Ablowitz-Musslimani variant of the NLS admits complex (parity-time reversal or) PT-invariant kink and pulse sol…
We consider effectively one-dimensional planar and radial kinks in two-dimensional nonlinear Klein-Gordon models and focus on the sine-Gordon model and the $ϕ^4$ variants thereof. We adapt an adiabatic invariant formulation recently developed for nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equations, and we study the transverse stability of these kinks. This enables us to characterize one-dimensional planar kinks as solitonic filaments, whose stationary states and corresponding spectral stability can be characterized not only in the homogeneous case, but also in the presence of external potentials. Beyond that, t…
We obtain novel solutions of a coupled $ϕ^4$, a coupled nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) and a coupled modified Korteweg de Vries (MKdV) model which can be re-expressed as a linear superposition of either the sum or the difference of two hyperbolic kink or two hyperbolic pulse solutions. These results demonstrate that the notion of superposed solutions extends to coupled nonlinear equations as well.
The study of kink interactions in nonlinear Klein-Gordon models in $1+1$-dimensions has a time-honored history. Until a few years ago, it was arguably considered a fairly mature field whose main phenomenology was well understood both qualitatively and at least semi-quantitatively. This consensus was shattered when H. Weigel and his group established that the effective model that had allowed this detailed understanding contained an all-important typo. Remarkably, they found that correcting this error wipes out both the quantitative and qualitative agreement and, in fact, leads to additional pro…
We study the evolution of fronts in the Klein-Gordon equation when the nonlinear term is non-homogeneous. Extending previous works on homogeneous nonlinear terms, we describe the derivation of an equation governing the front motion, which is strongly nonlinear, and, for the two-dimensional case, generalizes the damped Born-Infeld equation. We study the motion of one- and two-dimensional fronts, finding that the dynamics is richer than in the homogeneous reaction term case.
Nonlinear space-time dynamics, defined in terms of celebrated 'solitonic' equations, brings indispensable tools for understanding, prediction and control of complex behaviors in both physical and life sciences. In this paper, we review sine-Gordon solitons, kinks and breathers as models of nonlinear excitations in complex systems in physics and in living cellular structures, both intra-cellular (DNA, protein folding and microtubules) and inter-cellular (neural impulses and muscular contractions). Key words: Sine-Gordon solitons, kinks and breathers, DNA, Protein folding, Microtubules, Neural c…
We introduce a novel class of stable nonlinear modes trapped in a lower-index film core sandwiched between two optical lattices, or in the cylindrical core of a radial lattice, imprinted in defocusing media. Such family of nonlinear modes transforms into defect lattice solitons when the core width is sufficiently small or into an array of kinks when the width is large enough. We find that higher-order modes with multiple zeros inside the guiding core can be stable in one-dimensional settings.
Molecular dynamic simulations are performed to investigate a long-time evolution of different type initial signals in nonlinear acoustic chains with realistic Exp-6 potential and with power ones. Finite number of long-lifetime kink-shaped excitations is observed in the system in thermodynamic equilibrium. Dynamical equilibrium between the processes of their growth and decay is found.
We obtain exact traveling-wave solutions of the coupled nonlinear partial differential equations that describe the dynamics of two classical scalar fields in 1+1 dimensions. The solutions are kinks interpolating between neighboring vacua. We compute the classical kink mass and show that it saturates a Bogomol'nyi-type bound. We also present exact traveling-wave solutions of a more general class of models. Examples include coupled $ϕ^4$ and sine-Gordon models.
We study the properties of a relativistic model with logarithmic nonlinearity. We show that such model allows two types of solutions: topologically trivial (gaussons) and topologically non-trivial (kinks), depending on a sign of the nonlinear coupling. We focus primarily on the kinks' case and study their scattering properties. For the kink-antikink scattering, we have found a critical value of the initial velocity, which separates two different scenarios of scattering. For the initial velocities below this critical value, the kinks form a bound state, which then decays slowly. If the initial …
We consider the propagation of sine-Gordon kinks in a planar curved strip as a model of nonlinear wave propagation in curved wave guides. The homogeneous Neumann transverse boundary conditions, in the curvilinear coordinates, allow to assume a homogeneous kink solution. Using a simple collective variable approach based on the kink coordinate, we show that curved regions act as potential barriers for the wave and determine the threshold velocity for the kink to cross. The analysis is confirmed by numerical solution of the 2D sine-Gordon equation.
We consider a prototypical model in which a nonlinear field (continuum or discrete) evolves on a flexible substrate which feeds back to the evolution of the main field. We identify the underlying physics and potential applications of such a model and examine its simplest one-dimensional Hamiltonian form, which turns out to be a modified Frenkel-Kontorova model coupled to an extra linear equation. We find static kink solutions and study their stability, and then examine moving kinks (the continuum limit of the model is studied too). We observe how the substrate effectively renormalizes properti…
We develop a general mapping from given kink or pulse shaped travelling-wave solutions including their velocity to the equations of motion on one-dimensional lattices which support these solutions. We apply this mapping - by definition an inverse method - to acoustic solitons in chains with nonlinear intersite interactions, to nonlinear Klein-Gordon chains, to reaction-diffusion equations and to discrete nonlinear Schrödinger systems. Potential functions can be found in at least a unique way provided the pulse shape is reflection symmetric and pulse and kink shapes are at least $C^2$ functions…
We study properties of the localized solitons to the sine-Gordon equation excited on the attractive impurity by a moving kink. The cases of one- and two-dimensional spatially extended impurities are considered. For the case of one-dimensional impurity the possibility of excitation of the first even and odd high-amplitude impurity modes by the moving kink is demonstrated. For the case of two-dimensional impurity we show the possibility of excitation of the nonlinear high-amplitude waves of new type called here breathing pulson and breathing 2D soliton. We suggest different analytical expression…
We present a stability theory for kink propagation in chains of coupled oscillators and a new algorithm for the numerical study of kink dynamics. The numerical solutions are computed using an equivalent integral equation instead of a system of differential equations. This avoids uncertainty about the impact of artificial boundary conditions and discretization in time. Stability results also follow from the integral version. Stable kinks have a monotone leading edge and move with a velocity larger than a critical value which depends on the damping strength.
We present the theory of nonlinear ac magnetic response for the highly nonlinear regime of the chiral soliton lattice. Increasing of the dc magnetic field perpendicularly to the chiral axis results in crossover inside the phase, when nearly isolated $2π$-kinks are partitioned by vast ferromagnetic domains. Assuming that each of the kink reacts independently from the other ones to the external ac field, we demonstrate that internal deformations of such a kink give rise to the nonlinear response.
We develop a dynamical model of the propagating nonlinear localized excitations, supersonic kinks, in the cation layer in a silicate mica crystal. We start from purely electrostatic Coulomb interaction and add the Ziegler-Biersack-Littmark short-range repulsive potential and the periodic potential produced by other atoms of the lattice. This approach allows the construction of supersonic kinks which can propagate in the lattice within a large range of energies and velocities. The interparticle distances in the lattice kinks with high energy are physically reasonable values. The introduction of…
We review research on the role of nonlinear coherent phenomena (e.g breathers and kinks) in the formation linear decorations in mica crystal. The work is based on a new model for the motion of the mica hexagonal K layer, which allows displacement of the atoms from the unit cell. With a simple piece-wise polynomial inter-particle potential, we verify the existence of localized long-lived breathers in an idealized lattice at 0K. Moreover, our model allows us to observe long-lived localized kinks. We study the interactions of such localized modes along a lattice direction, and in addition demonst…
The scattering of kinks and low-frequency breathers of the nonlinear sine-Gordon (SG) equation on a spatially localized $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric perturbation (defect) with a balanced gain and loss is investigated numerically. It is demonstrated that if a kink passes the defect, it always restores its initial momentum and energy and the only effect of the interaction with the defect is a phase shift of the kink. A kink approaching the defect from the gain side always passes, while in the opposite case it must have sufficiently large initial momentum to pass through the defect instead of being t…

We predict theoretically that surface of an optical lattice imprinted in defocusing nonlinear media can support shock, or kink waves. Such new surface waves contain a modulationally stable pedestal and are strongly localized at the edge of the optical lattice due to Bragg-type reflection. The kink steepness and localization degree can be controlled by the lattice depth. We found two types of kinks, which exhibit distinct stability properties for each finite gap in the lattice spectrum. Our findings open the way to experimental observation of optical surface kink waves.
We develop {\em the first analytical theory of multikinks} for strongly {\em dispersive nonlinear systems}, considering the examples of the weakly discrete sine-Gordon model and the generalized Frenkel-Kontorova model with a piecewise parabolic potential. We reveal that there are no $2π$-kinks for this model, but there exist {\em discrete sets} of $2πN$-kinks for all N>1. We also show their bifurcation structure in driven damped systems.
The dynamics of nonlinear waves with controllable dispersion, nonlinearities, and background continues to be an exciting line of research in recent years. In this work, we focus to investigate an integrable (3+1)-dimensional nonlinear model describing the evolution of {water waves} with higher-order temporal dispersion by characterizing the dynamics of lump and soliton waves on different spatially-varying backgrounds. We construct explicit lump wave and kink-soliton solutions for the considered model through its trilinear and bilinear equations with appropriate forms of the polynomial and expo…
To study the propagation of nonlinear waves across Y- and T-type junctions, we consider the 2D sine--Gordon equation as a model and study the dynamics of kinks and breathers in such geometries. The comparison of the energies reveals that the angle of the fork plays no role. Motivated by this, we introduce a 1D effective equation whose solutions agree well with the 2D simulations for kink and breather solutions. For branches of equal width, breather crossing occurs approximately when $v > 1 - ω$, where $v$ is the breather celerity and $ω$ is its frequency. We then characterize the breathers in …
We consider the interaction of solitons in a biharmonic, beam model analogue of the well-studied $ϕ^4$ Klein-Gordon theory. Specifically, we calculate the force between a well separated kink and antikink. Knowing their accelerations as a function of separation, we can determine their motion using a simple ODE. There is good agreement between this asymptotic analysis and numerical computation. Importantly, we find the force has an exponentially-decaying oscillatory behaviour (unlike the monotonically attractive interaction in the Klein-Gordon case). Corresponding to the zeros of the force, we p…
We study the evolution of fronts in a bistable reaction-diffusion system when the nonlinear reaction term is spatially non-homogeneous. This equation has been used to model wave propagation in various biological systems. Extending previous works on homogeneous reaction terms, we derive asymptotically an equation governing the front motion, which is strongly nonlinear and, for the two-dimensional case, generalizes the classical mean curvature flow equation. We study the motion of one- and two- dimensional fronts, finding that the non-homogeneity acts as a "potential function" for the motion of …
The transition from integrable to non-integrable highly-dispersive nonlinear models is investigated. The sine-Gordon and $ϕ^4$-equations with the additional fourth-order spatial and spatio-temporal derivatives, describing the higher dispersion, and with the terms originated from nonlinear interactions are studied. The exact static and moving topological kinks and soliton-complex solutions are obtained for a special choice of the equation parameters in the dispersive systems. The problem of spectra of linear excitations of the static kinks is solved completely for the case of the regularized eq…
We investigate the ratchet dynamics of nonlinear Klein-Gordon kinks in a periodic, asymmetric lattice of point-like inhomogeneities. We explain the underlying rectification mechanism within a collective coordinate framework, which shows that such system behaves as a rocking ratchet for point particles. Careful attention is given to the kink width dynamics and its role in the transport. We also analyze the robustness of our kink rocking ratchet in the presence of noise. We show that the noise activates unidirectional motion in a parameter range where such motion is not observed in the noiseless…
We study the classical dynamics of the Abelian Higgs model employing an asymptotic multiscale expansion method, which uses the ratio of the Higgs to the gauge field amplitudes as a small parameter. We derive an effective nonlinear Schrodinger equation for the gauge field, and a linear equation for the scalar field containing the gauge field as a nonlinear source. This equation is used to predict the existence of oscillons and oscillating kinks for certain regimes of the ratio of the Higgs to the gauge field masses. Results of direct numerical simulations are found to be in very good agreement …
The algebraic geometric approach to $N$-component systems of nonlinear integrable PDE's is used to obtain and analyze explicit solutions of the coupled KdV and Dym equations. Detailed analysis of soliton fission, kink to anti-kink transitions and multi-peaked soliton solutions is carried out. Transformations are used to connect these solutions to several other equations that model physical phenomena in fluid dynamics and nonlinear optics.
The stability of topological solitary waves and pulses in one-dimensional nonlinear Klein-Gordon systems is revisited. The linearized equation describing small deviations around the static solution leads to a Sturm-Liouville problem, which is solved in a systematic way for the $-l\,(l+1)\,\sech^2(x)$-potential, showing the orthogonality and completeness relations fulfilled by the set of its solutions for all values $l\in\mathbb{N}$. This approach allows to determine the linear stability of kinks and pulses of certain nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations. Two families of novel nonlinear Klein-Gordo…
We study topological solitary waves (kinks and antikinks) in a nonlinear one-dimensional Klein-Gordon chain with the on-site potential of a double-Morse type. This chain is used to describe the collective proton dynamics in quasi-one-dimensional networks of hydrogen bonds, where the on-site potential plays role of the proton potential in the hydrogen bond. The system supports a rich variety of stationary kink solutions with different symmetry properties. We study the stability and bifurcation structure of all these stationary kink states. An exactly solvable model with a piecewise ``parabola-c…
It was recently proposed a novel discretization for nonlinear Klein-Gordon field theories in which the resulting lattice preserves the topological (Bogomol'nyi) lower bound on the kink energy and, as a consequence, has no Peierls-Nabarro barrier even for large spatial discretizations (h~1.0). It was then suggested that these ``topological discrete systems'' are a natural choice for the numerical study of continuum kink dynamics. Giving particular emphasis to the phi^4 theory, we numerically investigate kink-antikink scattering and breather formation in these topological lattices. Our results i…
We study the nonlinear dynamics of a completely inhomogeneous DNA chain which is governed by a perturbed sine-Gordon equation. A multiple scale perturbation analysis provides perturbed kink-antikink solitons to represent open state configuration with small fluctuation. The perturbation due to inhomogeneities changes the velocity of the soliton. However, the width of the soliton remains constant.
