We discuss theoretically the magnetically ordered phase induced by magnetic and nonmagnetic impurities in three-dimensional and quasi-low-dimensional systems with singlet ground states separated by a gap from excited triplet states. Using ideas of the percolation theory, we estimate the transition temperature $T_N(n)$ to the Néel phase at a small concentration $n$ of defects, derive the density of states of low-energy elementary excitations, and examine the contribution of these excitations to the specific heat and magnetization. Our expressions for $T_N(n)$ and for the specific heat describe well available experimental findings obtained in various appropriate systems: spin-$\frac12$ dimer materials, spin-ladder compounds, spin-Peierls and Haldane chain materials. However, our expression for $T_N(n)$ differs considerably from many of those proposed before.
We show that boundaries of 3D weak topological insulators can become gapped by strong interactions while preserving all symmetries, leading to Abelian surface topological order. The anomalous nature of the weak topological insulators manifests itself in a non-trivial action of symmetries on the quasiparticles; most strikingly, translations change the anyon types in a manner impossible in strictly 2D systems with the same symmetry. As a further consequence, screw dislocations form non-Abelian defects that trap $\mathbb{Z}_4$ parafermion zero modes.
We study the gapped phase of Kitaev's honeycomb model (a Z_2 spin liquid) in the presence of lattice defects. We find that some dislocations and bond defects carry unpaired Majorana fermions. Physical excitations associated with these defects are (complex) fermion modes made out of two (real) Majorana fermions connected by a Z_2 gauge string. The quantum state of these modes is robust against local noise and can be changed by winding a Z_2 vortex around a dislocation. The exact solution respects gauge invariance and reveals a crucial role of the gauge field in the physics of Majorana modes.
A simple picture for the spectrum of the one-dimensional Hubbard model is presented using a classification of the eigenstates based on an intuitive bound-state Bethe-Ansatz approach. This approach allows us to prove a "string hypothesis" for complex momenta and derive an exact formulation of the Bethe-Ansatz equations including all states. Among other things we show that all gapped eigenstates have the Bethe-Ansatz form, contrary to assertions in the literature. The simplest excitations in the upper Hubbard band are computed: we find an unusual dispersion close to half-filling.
We demonstrate that local modulations of magnetic couplings have a profound effect on the temperature dependence of the relaxation rate of optical magnons in a wide class of antiferromagnets in which gapped excitations coexist with acoustic spin waves. In a two-dimensional collinear antiferromagnet with an easy-plane anisotropy, the disorder-induced relaxation rate of the gapped mode, Gamma_imp=Gamma_0+A(TlnT)^2, greatly exceeds the magnon-magnon damping, Gamma_m-m=BT^5, negligible at low temperatures. We measure the lifetime of gapped magnons in a prototype XY antiferromagnet BaNi2(PO4)2 usin…
While a quantum spin liquid (QSL) phase has been identified in the $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model on a triangular lattice via numerical calculations, debate persists about whether or not such a QSL is gapped or gapless, with contradictory conclusions from different techniques. Moreover, information about excitations and dynamics is crucial for the experimental detection of such a phase. In this work, we use exact diagonalization to characterize signatures of a QSL phase on the triangular lattice through the dynamical spin structure factor $\mathcal{S}(q,ω)$ and Raman susceptibility $\mathcalχ(ω)…
Symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases are gapped quantum phases which host symmetry-protected gapless edge excitations. On the other hand, the edge states can be gapped by spontaneously breaking symmetry. We show that topological defects on the symmetry-broken edge cannot proliferate due to their fractional statistics. A gapped symmetric boundary, however, can be achieved between an SPT phase and certain fractionalized phases by condensing the bound state of a topological defect and an anyon. We demonstrate this by two examples in two dimensions: an exactly solvable model for the boundar…
KCuCl$_3$ is a three dimensionally coupled spin dimer system, which undergoes a pressure-induced quantum phase transition from a gapped ground state to an antiferromagnetic state at a critical pressure of $P_{\rm c} \simeq 8.2$ kbar. Magnetic excitations in KCuCl$_3$ at a hydrostatic pressure of 4.7 kbar have been investigated by conducting neutron inelastic scattering experiments using a newly designed cylindrical high-pressure clamp cell. A well-defined single excitation mode is observed. The softening of the excitation mode due to the applied pressure is clearly observed. From the analysis …
We study the correspondence between boundary spectrum of non-chiral topological orders on an open manifold $\mathcal{M}$ with gapped boundaries and the entanglement spectrum in the bulk of gapped topological orders on a closed manifold. The closed manifold is bipartitioned into two subsystems, one of which has the same topology as $\mathcal{M}$. Specifically, we focus on the case of generalized string-net models and discuss the cases where $\mathcal{M}$ is a disk or a cylinder. When $\mathcal{M}$ has the topology of a cylinder, different combinations of boundary conditions of the cylinder will…
We report a neutron scattering study of the magnetic excitation spectrum in each of the three temperature and pressure driven phases of URu$_2$Si$_2$. We find qualitatively similar excitations throughout the (H0L) scattering plane in the hidden order and large moment phases, with no changes in the $\hbarω$-widths of the excitations at the $Σ$ = (1.407,0,0) and $Z$ = (1,0,0) points, within our experimental resolution. There is, however, an increase in the gap at the $Σ$ point from 4.2(2) meV to 5.5(3) meV, consistent with other indicators of enhanced antiferromagnetism under pressure.
We use the variational matrix-product ansatz to study elementary excitations in the S=1/2 ladder with additional diagonal coupling, equivalent to a single S=1/2 chain with alternating exchange and next-nearest neighbor interaction. In absence of alternation the elementary excitation consists of two free S=1/2 particles ("spinons") which are solitons in the dimer order. When the nearest-neighbor exchange alternates, the "spinons" are confined into one S=1 excitation being a soliton in the generalized string order. Variational results are found to be in a qualitative agreement with the exact dia…
The integrable su(4)-invariant spin-ladder model with boundary defect is studied using the Bethe ansatz method. The exact phase diagram for the ground state is given and the boundary quantum critical behavior is discussed. It consists of a gapped phase in which the rungs of the ladder form singlet states and a gapless Luttinger liquid phase. It is found that in the gapped phase the boundary bound state corresponds to an unscreened local moment, while in the Luttinger liquid phase the local moment is screened at low temperatures in analogy to the Kondo effect.
We study symmetries and defects of a wide class of two dimensional Abelian topological phases characterized by Lie algebras. We formulate the symmetry group of all Abelian topological field theories. The symmetries relabel quasiparticles (or anyons) but leave exchange and braiding statistics unchanged. Within the class of $ADE$ phases in particular, these anyonic symmetries have a natural origin from the Lie algebra. We classify one dimensional gapped phases along the interface between identical topological states according to symmetries. This classification also applies to gapped edges of a w…
Fracton phases exhibit striking behavior which appears to render them beyond the standard topological quantum field theory (TQFT) paradigm for classifying gapped quantum matter. Here, we explore fracton phases from the perspective of defect TQFTs and show that topological defect networks---networks of topological defects embedded in stratified 3+1D TQFTs---provide a unified framework for describing various types of gapped fracton phases. In this picture, the sub-dimensional excitations characteristic of fractonic matter are a consequence of mobility restrictions imposed by the defect network. …
This article reviews low-temperature heat transport studies of spin-gapped quantum magnets in the last few decades. Quantum magnets with small spins and low dimensionality exhibit a variety of novel phenomena. Among them, some systems are char-acteristic of having quantum-mechanism spin gap in their magnetic excitation spectra, including spin-Peierls systems, S = 1 Haldane chains, S = 1/2 spin ladders, and spin dimmers. In some particular spin-gapped systems, the XY-type antiferromagnetic state induced by magnetic field that closes the spin gap can be described as a magnon Bose-Einstein conden…
The structure of extrinsic defects in topologically ordered states of matter is host to a rich set of universal physics. Extrinsic defects in 2+1 dimensional topological states include line-like defects, such as boundaries between topologically distinct states, and point-like defects, such as junctions between different line defects. Gapped boundaries in particular can themselves be \it topologically \rm distinct, and the junctions between them can localize topologically protected zero modes, giving rise to topological ground state degeneracies and projective non-Abelian statistics. In this pa…
We have mapped from the quantum to the classical limit the spin excitation spectrum of the antiferromagnetic spin-1 Heisenberg chain system CsNiCl3 in its paramagnetic phase from T=5 to 200K. Neutron scattering shows that the excitations are resonant and dispersive up to at least T=70K, but broaden considerably with increasing temperature. The dispersion flattens out with increasing temperature as the resonance energy Delta at the antiferromagnetic wave-vector increases and the maximum in the dispersion decreases. The correlation length xi between T=12 and 50K is in agreement with quantum Mont…
Using the conventional $T$-matrix approach, we discuss gapped phases in 1D, 2D, and 3D spin systems (both with and without a long range magnetic order) with bond disorder and with weakly interacting bosonic elementary excitations. This work is motivated by recent experimental and theoretical activity in spin-liquid-like systems with disorder and in the disordered interacting boson problem. In particular, we apply our theory to both paramagnetic low-field and fully polarized high-field phases in dimerized spin-$\frac12$ systems and in integer-spin magnets with large single-ion easy-plane anisot…
We consider the fully anisotropic Heisenberg spin-1/2 antiferromagnet in a uniform magnetic field, whose ground-state is characterized by broken spin rotation symmetry and gapped spinon excitations. We expand on a recent mean-field approach to the problem by incorporating fluctuations in a loop expansion. Quantitative results for the magnetization, excitation gap and specific heat are obtained. We compare our predictions with new DMRG and exact diagonalization data and, for zero field, with the exact solution of the ${XYZ}$ spin chain from the Bethe Ansatz.
Defects between gapped boundaries provide a possible physical realization of projective non-abelian braid statistics. A notable example is the projective Majorana/parafermion braid statistics of boundary defects in fractional quantum Hall/topological insulator and superconductor heterostructures. In this paper, we develop general theories to analyze the topological properties and projective braiding of boundary defects of topological phases of matter in two spatial dimensions. We present commuting Hamiltonians to realize defects between gapped boundaries in any $(2+1)D$ untwisted Dijkgraaf-Wit…
We report on the spin dynamics of 13C isotope enriched inner-walls in double-wall carbon nanotubes (DWCNT) using 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Contrary to expectations, we find that our data set implies that the spin-lattice relaxation time (T1) has the same temperature (T) and magnetic field (H) dependence for most of the innerwall nanotubes detected by NMR. In the high temperature regime (T > 150 K), we find that the T and H dependence of 1/T1T is consistent with a 1D metallic chain. For T < 150 K, we find a significant increase in 1/T1T with decreasing T, followed by a sharp drop be…
Sr$_{3}$Cr$_{2}$O$_{8}$ consist of a lattice of spin-1/2 Cr$^{5+}$ ions, which form hexagonal bilayers and which are paired into dimers by the dominant antiferromagnetic intrabilayer coupling. The dimers are coupled three-dimensionally by frustrated interdimer interactions. A structural distortion from hexagonal to monoclinic leads to orbital order and lifts the frustration giving rise to spatially anisotropic exchange interactions. We have grown large single crystals of Sr$_{3}$Cr$_{2}$O$_{8}$ and have performed DC susceptibility, high field magnetisation and inelastic neutron scattering meas…
Some magnets due to particular geometry of the exchange bonds do not undergo transition to the conventional magnetically ordered state despite of the presence of significant exchange couplings. Instead, a collective paramagnetic state is formed. The later state can remain stable down to $T=0$ if the ground state of this magnet turns out to be nonmagnetic singlet separated from the excited triplet states by an energy gap. Low-temperature spin dynamics of the collective paramagnets with gapped excitations spectrum (or spin-gap magnets) can be described in terms of a dilute gas of the triplet exc…
We study the dynamical spin excitations of the one-dimensional $S=1$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain with single-ion anisotropy by using quantum Monte Carlo simulations and stochastic analytic continuation of imaginary-time correlation function. Using the transverse dynamic spin structure factor, we observe the quantum phase transition with a critical point between the topological Haldane gapped phase and the trivial phase. At the quantum critical point, we find a broad continuum characterized by the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid similar to a $S=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain. We furth…
We study lattice Hamiltonian realisations of (3+1)d Dijkgraaf-Witten theory with gapped boundaries. In addition to the bulk loop-like excitations, the Hamiltonian yields bulk dyonic string-like excitations that terminate at gapped boundaries. Using a tube algebra approach, we classify such excitations and derive the corresponding representation theory. Via a dimensional reduction argument, we relate this tube algebra to that describing (2+1)d boundary point-like excitations at interfaces between two gapped boundaries. Such point-like excitations are well known to be encoded into a bicategory o…
Particle-hole continuum (PHC) for massive Dirac fermions in presence of short range interactions, provides an unprecedented opportunity for formation of two collective split-off states, one in the singlet and the other in the triplet (spin-1) channel in undoped system. Both poles are close in energy and are separated from thec continuum of free particle-hole excitations by an energy scale of the order of gap parameter $Δ$. They both disperse linearly with two different velocities reminiscent of spin-charge separation in Luttinger liquids. When the strength of Hubbard interactions is stronger t…
We report a new kagome quantum spin liquid candidate Cu$_3$Zn(OH)$_6$FBr, which does not experience any phase transition down to 50 mK, more than three orders lower than the antiferromagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature ($\sim$ 200 K). A clear gap opening at low temperature is observed in the uniform spin susceptibility obtained from $^{19}$F nuclear magnetic resonance measurements. We observe the characteristic magnetic field dependence of the gap as expected for fractionalized spin-1/2 spinon excitations. Our experimental results provide firm evidence for spin fractionalization in a topologicall…
Magnetic excitations and the spin Hamiltonian of the spin-1 J1-J1-J2 trimer chain compound CaNi3P4O14 have been investigated by inelastic neutron scattering. Experimental data reveal gapped dispersive spin wave excitations in the 3D long-range ordered magnetic state (TC = 16 K), and gapless magnetic excitations above the TC. Simulated magnetic excitations, by using the linear spin wave theory, for a model of coupled trimer spin-chains provide a good description of the observed experimental data. The analysis reveals both ferromagnetic J1 and J2 interactions within the chains, and an antiferrom…
NaOsO3 hosts a rare manifestation of a metal-insulator transition driven by magnetic correlations, placing the magnetic exchange interactions in a central role. We use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering to directly probe these magnetic exchange interactions. A dispersive and strongly gapped (58 meV) excitation is observed indicating appreciable spin-orbit coupling in this 5d3 system. The excitation is well described within a minimal model Hamiltonian with strong anisotropy and Heisenberg exchange (J1=J2=13.9 meV). The observed behavior places NaOsO3 on the boundary between localized and itine…

Recently we conjectured that a certain set of universal topological quantities characterize topological order in any dimension. Those quantities can be extracted from the universal overlap of the ground state wave functions. For systems with gapped boundaries, these quantities are representations of the mapping class group $MCG(\mathcal M)$ of the space manifold $\mathcal M$ on which the systems lives. We will here consider simple examples in three dimensions and give physical interpretation of these quantities, related to fusion algebra and statistics of particle and string excitations. In pa…
A realistic material may possess defects, which often bring the material new properties that have practical applications. The boundary defects of a two-dimensional topologically ordered system are thought of as an alternative way of realizing topological quantum computation. To facilitate the study of such boundary defects, in this paper, we construct an exactly solvable Hamiltonian model of topological orders with gapped boundary junctions, where the boundary defects reside, by placing the Levin-Wen model on a disk, whose gapped boundary is separated into multiple segments by junctions. We fi…
It is widely believed that magnetic excitations become increasingly incoherent as temperature is raised due to random collisions which limit their lifetime. This picture is based on spin-wave calculations for gapless magnets in 2 and 3 dimensions and is observed experimentally as a symmetric Lorentzian broadening in energy. Here, we investigate a three-dimensional dimer antiferromagnet and find unexpectedly that the broadening is asymmetric - indicating that far from thermal decoherence, the excitations behave collectively like a strongly correlated gas. This result suggests that a temperature…
Due to its unique structure, graphene provides a condensed-matter model of particle physics phenomena. One is the critical charge which is highly interested. The investigation of critical charge in gapped graphene is performed within single particle approach by means of Dirac equation integration. The screened Coulomb interaction between charged defect and graphene electron excitations is investigated. Two kinds of mass gap generation and various values of substrate dielectric permittivities are considered. It is shown that the critical charge phenomenon can be observed even with quite small c…
Dividing the lattice into blocks with singlet ground state and knowing the exact low energy spectrum of the blocks and of dimers (or trimers) of blocks, it is possible to approach the lowest part of the lattice spectrum through an excitonic type effective model. The potentialities of the method are illustrated on the 1-D frustrated chain and the 1/5-depleted square and the plaquette 2-D lattices. The method correctly locates the phase transitions between gapped and non-gapped phases.
$2+1$D bosonic topological orders can be characterized by the $S,T$ matrices that encode the statistics of topological excitations. In particular, the $S,T$ matrices can be used to systematically obtain the gapped boundaries of bosonic topological orders. Such an approach, however, does not naively apply to fermionic topological orders (FTOs). In this work, we propose a systematic approach to obtain the gapped boundaries of $2+1$D abelian FTOs. The main trick is to construct a bosonic extension in which the fermionic excitation is "condensed" to form the associated FTOs. Here we choose the par…
This paper attempts to establish the connection among classifications of gapped boundaries in topological phases of matter, bosonic symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases and fault-tolerantly implementable logical gates in quantum error-correcting codes. We begin by presenting constructions of gapped boundaries for the $d$-dimensional quantum double model by using $d$-cocycles functions ($d\geq 2$). We point out that the system supports $m$-dimensional excitations ($m<d$), which we shall call fluctuating charges, that are superpositions of point-like electric charges characterized by $m$-…
We argue that a relatively simple model containing only SU(2)-invariant chiral three-spin interactions on a Kagome lattice of S=1/2 spins can give rise to both a gapped and a gapless quantum spin liquid. Our arguments are rooted in a formulation in terms of network models of edge states and are backed up by a careful numerical analysis. For a uniform choice of chirality on the lattice, we realize the Kalmeyer-Laughlin state, i.e. a gapped spin liquid which is identified as the nu=1/2 bosonic Laughlin state. For staggered chiralities, a gapless spin liquid emerges which exhibits gapless spin ex…
In quantum spin liquids, fractional spinon excitations carry half-integer spins and other fractional quantum numbers of lattice and time-reversal symmetries. Different patterns of symmetry fractionalization distinguish different spin liquid phases. In this work, we derive a general constraint on the symmetry fractionalization of spinons in a gapped spin liquid, realized in a system with an odd number of spin-$1/2$ per unit cell. In particular, when applied to kagome/triangular lattices, we obtain a complete classification of symmetric gapped $\mathbb{Z_2}$ spin liquids.
We define a class of lattice models for two-dimensional topological phases with boundary such that both the bulk and the boundary excitations are gapped. The bulk part is constructed using a unitary tensor category $\calC$ as in the Levin-Wen model, whereas the boundary is associated with a module category over $\calC$. We also consider domain walls (or defect lines) between different bulk phases. A domain wall is transparent to bulk excitations if the corresponding unitary tensor categories are Morita equivalent. Defects of higher codimension will also be studied. In summary, we give a dictio…
We consider the effect of imperfect nesting in quasi-one-dimensional unconventional density waves in the case, when the imperfect nesting and the gap depends on the same wavevector component. The phase diagram is very similar to that in a conventional density wave. The density of states is highly asymmetric with respect to the Fermi energy. The optical conductivity at T=0 remains unchanged for small deviations from perfect nesting. For higher imperfect nesting parameter, an optical gap opens, and considerable amount of spectral weight is transferred to higher frequencies. This makes the optica…
Often, exotic phases appear in the phase diagrams between conventional phases. Their elementary excitations are of particular interest. Here, we consider the example of the ionic Hubbard model in one dimension. This model is a band insulator (BI) for weak interaction and a Mott insulator (MI) for strong interaction. Inbetween, a spontaneously dimerized insulator (SDI) occurs which is governed by energetically low-lying charge and spin degrees of freedom. Applying a systematically controlled version of the continuous unitary transformations (CUTs) we are able to determine the dispersions of the…
We consider the absorption of light with emission of one S(tot)=1 magnetic excitation in systems with a spin gap induced by quantum fluctuations. We argue that an electric dipole transition is allowed on the condition that a virtual phonon instantaneously breaks the inversion symmetry. We derive an effective operator for the transition and argue that the proposed theory explains the polarized experiments in CuGeO(3) and SrCu(2)[BO(3)](2).
We study gapped boundaries characterized by "fermionic condensates" in 2+1 d topological order. Mathematically, each of these condensates can be described by a super commutative Frobenius algebra. We systematically obtain the species of excitations at the gapped boundary/ junctions, and study their endomorphisms (ability to trap a Majorana fermion) and fusion rules, and generalized the defect Verlinde formula to a twisted version. We illustrate these results with explicit examples. We also connect these results with topological defects in super modular invariant CFTs. To render our discussion …
We show that line defects in a non-Abelian Kitaev spin liquid harbor gapless one-dimensional Majorana modes if the interaction across the defect falls below a critical value. Treating the weak interaction at the line defect within a mean-field approximation, we determine the critical interaction strength as a function of the external magnetic field. In the gapless regime, we use the low-energy effective field theory to calculate the spin-lattice relaxation rate for a nuclear spin near the defect and find a cubic temperature dependence that agrees with experiments in the Kitaev material $α\text…
Motivated by recent experiments on the material Ba_3NiSb_2O_9 we consider a spin-one quantum antiferromagnet on a triangular lattice with the Heisenberg bilinear and biquadratic exchange interactions and a single-ion anisotropy. Using a fermionic "triplon" representation for spins, we study the phase diagram within mean field theory. In addition to a fully gapped spin-liquid ground state, we find a state where one gapless triplon mode with Fermi surface coexists with d + id topological pairing of the other triplons. Despite the existence of a Fermi surface, this ground state has fully gapped b…
Exactly soluble spin-$\frac{1}2$ models on three-dimensional lattices are proposed by generalizing Kitaev model on honeycomb lattice to three dimensions with proper periodic boundary conditions. The simplest example is spins on a diamond lattice which is exactly soluble. The ground state sector of the model may be mapped into a p-wave paired state on cubic lattice. We observe for the first time a topological phase transition from a gapless phase to a gapped phase in an exactly soluble spin model. Furthermore, the gapless phase can not be gapped by a perturbation breaking the time reversal symm…
We study the ground state of three-leg $S=1/2$ Heisenberg tube using the density-matrix renormalization group method. The dimerization order-parameter and spin-excitation gap are calculated in a wide range of leg exchange interactions. We confirm that a gapped state with the dimerization order is realized even when the leg exchange interactions are ferromagnetic. Furthermore, the topological configuration of spin-singlet pairs in the ordered state is determined from the results of the Berry phase of each spin coupling as well as the structure factor of singlet-singlet correlation functions. We…
The low-energy excitations of the lightly doped cuprates were studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. A finite gap was measured over the entire Brillouin zone, including along the d_{x^2 - y^2} nodal line. This effect was observed to be generic to the normal states of numerous cuprates, including hole-doped La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} and Ca_{2-x}Na_{x}CuO_{2}Cl_{2} and electron-doped Nd_{2-x}Ce_{x}CuO_{4}. In all compounds, the gap appears to close with increasing carrier doping. We consider various scenarios to explain our results, including the possible effects of chemical disorder,…
We use exact diagonalization and the modified Lanczos method to study the finite energy and finite momentum spectral weight of the longitudinal and transverse spin excitations of the anisotropic zig-zag ladder. We find that the spin excitations form continua of gapless or gapped spinons in the different regions of the phase diagram. The results obtained are consistent with a picture previously proposed that in the anisotropic case there is a transition from a gapped regime to a gapless regime, for small interchain coupling. In this regime we find a sharp low-energy peak in the structure functi…
Fractons are gapped point-like excitations in $d=3$ topological ordered phases whose motion is constrained. They have been discovered in several gapped models but a unifying physical mechanism for generating them is still missing. It has been noticed that in symmetric-tensor ${\rm U}(1)$ gauge theories, charges are fractons and cannot move freely due to, for example, the conservation of not only the charge but also the dipole moment. To connect these theories with fully gapped fracton models, we study Higgs and partial confinement mechanisms in rank-2 symmetric-tensor gauge theories, where cha…
We study gapped boundaries of Abelian type-I fracton systems in three spatial dimensions. Using the X-cube model as our motivating example, we give a conjecture, with partial proof, of the conditions for a boundary to be gapped. In order to state our conjecture, we use a precise definition of fracton braiding and show that bulk braiding of fractons has several features that make it \textit{insufficient} to classify gapped boundaries. Most notable among these is that bulk braiding is sensitive to geometry and is "nonreciprocal," that is, braiding an excitation $a$ around $b$ need not yield the …
