We reformulate the quantization of the gravitational field and its sources, including the electric and magnetic fields as they appear in the knot algebra.
We revisit the problem of plane monochromatic gravitational waves impinging upon a Schwarzschild black hole using complex angular momentum techniques. By extending our previous study concerning scalar and electromagnetic waves [A. Folacci and M. Ould El Hadj, Phys.\, Rev.\, D {\bf 99}, 104079, (2019), arXiv:1901.03965], we provide complex angular momentum representations and Regge pole approximations of the helicity-preserving and helicity-reversing scattering amplitudes and of the total differential scattering cross section. We show, in particular, that for high frequencies (i.e., in the shor…
We develop the Tree-Loop Duality Relation for two- and three-loop integrals with multiple identical propagators (multiple poles). This is the extension of the Duality Relation for single poles and multiloop integrals derived in previous publications. We prove a generalization of the formula for single poles to multiple poles and we develop a strategy for dealing with higher-order pole integrals by reducing them to single pole integrals using Integration By Parts.
We advocate for an alternative description of gravitational radiation from black holes based on complex angular momentum techniques (analytic continuation of partial wave expansions, duality of the ${\cal S}$-matrix and effective resummations involving its Regge poles and the associated residues, Regge trajectories, semiclassical interpretations, etc.). Such techniques, which proved to be very helpful in various areas of physics to describe and analyze resonant scattering, were only marginally used in the context of black hole physics. Here, by considering the multipolar waveform generated by …
Duality and four-dimensional black holes: gravitational waves, algebraically special solutions, pole skipping, and the spectral duality relation in holographic thermal CFTs
When using dimensional regularization, the bare couplings are expressed as a power series in (2 - n/2)^{-1} where n is the number of dimensions. It is shown how the renormalization group can be used to sum the leading pole, next to leading pole etc. contributions to these sums in scalar electrodynamics (or any theory with multiple couplings.)
We provide simple and accurate analytical expressions for the Regge poles of the Schwarzschild black hole. This is achieved by using third-order WKB approximations to solve the radial wave equations for spins 0, 1 and 2. These results permit us to obtain analytically the dispersion relation and the damping of the "surface waves" lying on the photon sphere of the Schwarzschild black hole and which generate the weakly damped quasinormal modes of its spectrum. Our results could be helpful in order to simplify considerably the description of wave scattering from the Schwarzschild black hole as wel…
In the framework of dimensional regularization, we propose a generalization of the renormalization group equations in the case of the perturbative quantum gravity that involves renormalization of the metric and of the higher order Riemann curvature couplings. The case of zero cosmological constant is considered. Solving the renormalization group (RG) equations we compute the respective beta functions and derive the recurrence relations, valid at any order in the Newton constant, that relate the higher pole terms $1/(d-4)^n$ to a single pole $1/(d-4)$ in the quantum effective action. Using the …

We extend the double copy picture of scattering amplitudes to a class of matrix elements (so-called form factors) that involve local gauge invariant operators. Both the Bern, Carrasco and Johansson (BCJ) and the Kawai, Lewellen and Tye (KLT) formalisms are considered and novel properties are observed. One remarkable feature is that through the double-copy construction, certain spurious poles hidden in the gauge form factors become physical propagators in gravity. This mechanism also reveals new hidden relations for form factors which can be understood as a generalization of the BCJ relations.
The features of the ordinary least squares method, which gives a possible way to a solution of the overdetermined systems of algebraic equations and allows to estimate the uncertainties of the obtained solutions, are considered. As the important physical example we define four-loop QCD coefficients in the dependence of the relation between pole and running heavy quarks masses on the number of light flavors, using the existing results of numerical supercomputer based calculations of the corresponding four-loop contributions at different fixed numbers of light flavors. Stability of the found sol…
Recently the four-loop perturbative QCD contributions to the relations between pole and running masses of charm, bottom and top quarks were evaluated in the $\rm{\overline{MS}}$-scheme with identical numerical error bars. In this work the flavour dependence of the $\mathcal{O}(α_s^4)$ correction to these asymptotic series is obtained in the semi-analytical form with the help of the least squares method. The numerical structure of the corresponding asymptotic perturbative relations between pole and running $c$, $b$ and $t$-quark masses is considered and the theoretical errors of the $\mathcal{O…
In contrast to the common wisdom, we discover that, instead of the exponential fall-off of the form factors with Regge-pole structure, the high-energy scattering amplitudes of string scattered from Domain-wall behave as power-law with Regge-pole structure. This is to be compared with the well-known power-law form factors without Regge-pole structure of the D-instanton scatterings. This discovery makes Domain-wall scatterings an unique example of a hybrid of string and field theory scatterings. The calculation is done for bosonic string scatterings of arbitrary massive string states from D-24 b…
We consider a holographic thermal state and perturb it by a scalar operator whose associated real-time Green's function has only gapped poles. These gapped poles correspond to the non-hydrodynamic quasinormal modes of a massive scalar perturbation around a Schwarzschild black brane. Relations between pole-skipping points, critical points and quasinormal modes in general emerge when the mass of the scalar and hence the dual operator dimension is varied. First, this novel analysis reveals a relation between the location of a mode in the infinite tower of quasinormal modes and the number of pole-…
A specific representation of the known one-loop EW correction to the relation between the pole and running $\msbar$-scheme masses of the top-quark through particle masses of the Standard Model is given within the Fleischer-Jegerlehner tadpole scheme, where the vacuum expectation value of the Higgs field is renormalized. The importance of taking into account both the EW and QCD effects in this relation in the considered case is emphasized. It is noted that the discard of the EW corrections leads to over $10\;{\rm{GeV}}$ shift in the difference between the pole and running $t$-quark masses. This…
The anomalous effective action describing the coupling of gravity to a non-abelian gauge theory can be determined by a variational solution of the anomaly equation, as shown by Riegert long ago. It is given by a nonlocal expression, with the nonlocal interaction determined by the Green's function of a conformally covariant operator of fourth order. In recent works it has been shown that this interaction is mediated by a simple pole in an expansion around a Minkowski background, coupled in the infrared in the massless fermion limit. This result relies on the local formulation of the original ac…
It is shown that the commonly accepted relationship between the Landau singularity in the running coupling constant of QED or QCD and the renormalon singularities in the Borel sums of perturbation theory expansions is only a particular feature of the restriction of the perturbative $β$--function to the one loop level.
In this paper we present an iterative method to generate an infinite class of new nonlocal field theories whose propagators are ghost-free. We first examine the scalar field case and show that the pole structure of such generalized propagators possesses the standard two derivative pole and in addition can contain complex conjugate poles which, however, do not spoil at least tree level unitarity as the optical theorem is still satisfied. Subsequently, we define analogous propagators for the fermionic sector which is also devoid of unhealthy degrees of freedom. As a third case, we apply the same…
We study the main options for a unitary and renormalizable, local quantum field theory of the gravitational interactions. The first model is a Lee-Wick superrenormalizable higher-derivative gravity, formulated as a nonanalytically Wick rotated Euclidean theory. We show that, under certain conditions, the $S$ matrix is unitary when the cosmological constant vanishes. The model is the simplest of its class. However, infinitely many similar options are allowed, which raises the issue of uniqueness. To deal with this problem, we propose a new quantization prescription, by doubling the unphysical p…
The trace anomaly of quantum fields in electromagnetic or gravitational backgrounds implies the existence of massless scalar poles in physical amplitudes involving the stress-energy tensor. Considering first the axial anomaly and using QED as an example, we compute the full one-loop triangle amplitude of the fermionic stress tensor with two current vertices, <T^{mn} J^a J^b>, and exhibit the scalar pole in this amplitude associated with the trace anomaly, in the limit of zero electron mass m -> 0. To emphasize the infrared aspect of the anomaly, we use a dispersive approach and show that this …
I discuss the relation between harmonic polynomials and invariant theory and show that homogeneous, harmonic polynomials correspond to ternary forms that are apolar to a base conic (the absolute). The calculation of Schlesinger that replaces such a form by a polarised binary form is reviewed. It is suggested that Sylvester's theorem on the uniqueness of Maxwell's pole expression for harmonics is renamed the Clebsch-Sylvester theorem. The relation between certain constructs in invariant theory and angular momentum theory is enlarged upon and I resurrect the Joos--Weinberg matrices. Hilbert's pr…
A common strategy to investigate the fate of gravitational singularities in asymptotically AdS spacetimes is to translate the question from the gravitational side to a dual field theory using the gauge/gravity correspondence and to do a field theory computation. Given recent progress in singularity resolution via non-perturbative quantum gravity, it is natural to now turn the question around and to ask about field theory signatures of resolved singularities. An investigation along this line has been initiated in a companion paper, where a finite-distance pole exhibited by the two-point correla…
We study quantum chaos of rotating BTZ black holes in Topologically Massive gravity (TMG). We discuss the relationship between chaos parameters including Lyapunov exponents and butterfly velocities from shock wave calculations of out-of-time-order correlators (OTOC) and from pole-skipping analysis. We find a partial match between pole-skipping and the OTOC results in the high temperature regime. We also find that the velocity bound puts a chaos constraint on the gravitational Chern-Simons coupling.
A toy-model is studied, which considers two flat directions meeting at an enhanced symmetry point such that they realise the usual hybrid inflation mechanism. The kinetic term of the waterfall field features a pole at its Planckian vacuum expectation value (VEV), as with $α$-attractors. Consequently, after the phase transition which terminates hybrid inflation, the waterfall field never rolls to its VEV. Instead, it drives a stiff period, where the barotropic parameter of the Universe $w\approx 1/2$ results in a peak in the spectrum of primordial gravitational waves, which will be observable b…
We study the relationship between many-body quantum chaos and energy dynamics in holographic quantum field theory states dual to the simply-spinning Myers-Perry-AdS$_5$ black hole. The enhanced symmetry of such black holes allows us to provide a thorough examination of the phenomenon of pole-skipping, that is significantly simpler than a previous analysis of quantum field theory states dual to the Kerr-AdS$_4$ solution. In particular we give a general proof of pole-skipping in the retarded energy density Green's function of the dual quantum field theory whenever the spatial profile of energy f…
We analyse the structure of solutions of the Ginsparg-Wilson relation for lattice Dirac operator in topologically trivial gauge sector. We show that the properties of such solutions relating to the perturbative stability of the pole of the fermion propagator as well as to the structure of the Yukawa models based on these solutions are solely determined by the non-local chirally invariant part of these Dirac operators. Depending on the structure of this part, the pole in the fermion propagator may or may not be stable under radiative corrections. We illustrate this by explicit examples.
Bounds on transport represent a way of understanding allowable regimes of quantum and classical dynamics. Numerous such bounds have been proposed, either for classes of theories or (by using general arguments) universally for all theories. Few are exact and inviolable. I present a new set of methods and sufficient conditions for deriving exact, rigorous, and sharp bounds on all coefficients of hydrodynamic dispersion relations, including diffusivity and the speed of sound. These general techniques combine analytic properties of hydrodynamics and the theory of univalent (complex holomorphic and…
