When using dimensional regularization, the bare couplings are expressed as a power series in (2 - n/2)^{-1} where n is the number of dimensions. It is shown how the renormalization group can be used to sum the leading pole, next to leading pole etc. contributions to these sums in scalar electrodynamics (or any theory with multiple couplings.)
The renormalized photon and electron propagators are expanded over planar binary trees. Explicit recurrence solutions are given for the terms of these expansions. In the case of massless Quantum Electrodynamics (QED), the relation between renormalized and bare expansions is given in terms of a Hopf algebra structure. For massive quenched QED, the relation between renormalized and bare expansions is given explicitly.
We study a nonlocal theory that combines both the Pseudo quantum electrodynamics (PQED) and Chern-Simons actions among two-dimensional electrons. In the static limit, we conclude that the competition of these two interactions yields a Coulomb potential with a screened electric charge given by $e^2/(1+θ^2)$, where $θ$ is the dimensionless Chern-Simons parameter. This could be useful for describing the substrate interaction with two-dimensional materials and the doping dependence of the dielectric constant in graphene. In the dynamical limit, we calculate the effective current-current action of …
The Casimir effect is one of the most remarkable consequences of the non-zero vacuum energy predicted by quantum field theory. In this paper we use a local approach to study the Lorentz violation effects of the minimal standard model extension on the Casimir force between two parallel conducting plates in the vacuum. Using a perturbative method similar to that used for obtaining the Born series for the scattering amplitudes in quantum mechanics, we compute, at leading order in the Lorentz-violating coefficients, the relevant Green's function which satisfies given boundary conditions. The stand…
We consider a four-dimensional theory in the z=3 Lifshitz context, with an exponential (Liouville) potential. We determine the exact renormalized potential of the theory and derive the non-perturbative relation between the renormalized and bare couplings. In addition, we show that Lorentz symmetry is naturally generated by quantum fluctuations in the infrared regime, and conclude that the model can be relevant to High Energy Physics.
We study the renormalization flow of axion electrodynamics, concentrating on the non-perturbative running of the axion-photon coupling and the mass of the axion (like) particle. Due to a non-renormalization property of the axion-photon vertex, the renormalization flow is controlled by photon and axion anomalous dimensions. As a consequence, momentum-independent axion self-interactions are not induced by photon fluctuations. The non-perturbative flow towards the ultraviolet exhibits a Landau-pole-type behavior, implying that the system has a scale of maximum UV extension and that the renormaliz…
In this paper, a formulation, which is completely established on a quantum ground, is presented for basic contents of quantum electrodynamics (QED). This is done by moving away, from the fundamental level, the assumption that the spin space of bare photons should (effectively) possess the same properties as those of free photons observed experimentally. Within this formulation, bare photons with zero momentum can not be neglected when constructing the photon field; and an explicit expression for the related part of the photon field is derived. When a local gauge transformation is performed on …
Starting from a well defined local Lagrangian, we analyze the renormalization group equations in terms of the two different arbitrary scales associated with the regularization procedure and with the physical renormalization of the bare parameters, respectively. We apply our formalism to the minimal subtraction scheme using dimensional regularization. We first argue that the relevant regularization scale in this case should be dimensionless. By relating bare and renormalized parameters to physical observables, we calculate the coefficients of the renormalization group equation up to two loop or…
The two-loop anomalous dimension of the chiral matter superfields is calculated for a general ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theory regularized by higher covariant derivatives. We obtain both the anomalous dimension defined in terms of the bare couplings, and the one defined in terms of the renormalized couplings for an arbitrary renormalization prescription. For the one-loop finite theories we find a simple relation between the higher derivative regulators under which the anomalous dimension defined in terms of the bare couplings vanishes in the considered approximation. In this case the o…
In this paper a model describing fermions and gauge field localized on a domain wall is considered. The zero-mode sector of the model reproduces four-dimensional spinor electrodynamics. It is shown that in the resulting four-dimensional effective theory the lowest-order renormalized amplitude of the elastic $γγ$ scattering process is divergent due to the contributions of higher modes and thus such a scenario can not be considered as a realistic mechanism for fields localization on a domain wall.
A variational method is discussed, based on the principle of minimal variance. The method seems to be suited for gauge interacting fermions, and the simple case of quantum electrodynamics is discussed in detail. The issue of renormalization is addressed, and the renormalized propagators are shown to be the solution of a set of finite integral equations. The method is proven to be viable and, by a spectral representation, the multi-dimensional integral equations are recast in one-dimensional equations for the spectral weights. The UV divergences are subtracted exactly, yielding a set of coupled…
The background field method is adopted for studying the dynamics of coherent states within an interacting scalar field theory. Focusing on a coherent state that corresponds to the homogeneous condensate, the quantum depletion of the expectation value of the field-operator is demonstrated to be due to the annihilation of the condensate constituents into relativistic quanta. Moreover, due to the fact that the initial field acceleration and energy for the non-squeezed coherent states are determined in terms of bare coupling constant, instead of the renormalized one, the appearance of perturbative…

We study the supersymmetric N=(2,2) Wess-Zumino model in two dimensions with the functional renormalization group. At leading order in the supercovariant derivative expansion we recover the nonrenormalization theorem which states that the superpotential has no running couplings. Beyond leading order the renormalization of the bare mass is caused by a momentum dependent wave function renormalization. To deal with the partial differential equations we have developed a numerical toolbox called FlowPy. For weak couplings the quantum corrections to the bare mass found in lattice simulations is repr…
Three-loop $β$-functions of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model regularized by higher covariant derivatives are obtained for an arbitrary supersymmetric subtraction scheme. For this purpose we first calculate two-loop anomalous dimensions for all MSSM chiral matter superfields defined in terms of the bare couplings. Then we use the NSVZ equations for the renormalization group functions defined in terms of the bare couplings, which are valid in all orders in the case of using the higher covariant derivative regularization. This gives the three-loop $β$-functions defined in terms of the ba…

We briefly review the calculations of quantum corrections related with the exact NSVZ $β$-function in ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric theories, paying especial attention to the scheme dependence of the results. It is explained, how the NSVZ relation is obtained for the renormalization group functions defined in terms of the bare coupling constant if a theory is regularized by higher derivatives. Also we describe, how to construct a special renormalization prescription which gives the NSVZ relation for the renormalization group functions defined in terms of the renormalized coupling constant exactl…
In supersymmetric quantum electrodynamics there is the exact relation between the expressed through the unrenormalized coupling gauge beta-function and the anomalous dimension of matter superfields. In the present report we describe the subgroup of general renormalization group transformations, conserving this relation exactly in all orders of the perturbation theory in terms of the renormalized coupling constant.
Wigner's famous 1939 classification of positive energy representations, combined with the more recent modular localization principle, has led to a significant conceptual and computational extension of renormalized perturbation theory to interactions involving fields of higher spin s>1/2. The starting observation was that the well-known clash between point-localized gauge theories and the Hilbert space, which hitherto has been solved by using a Krein space setting, can also be solved by preserving the Hilbert space setting; in this case the theory selects the tightest covariant localization whi…
