Electronic spin precession and filtering are measured in the molecular field of magnetic thin films. The conducted lab-on-chip experiments allow injection of electrons with energies between 0.8 and 1.1 eV, an energy range never explored up to now in spin precession experiments. While filtering angles agree with previous reported values measured at much higher electron energies, spin precession angles of 2.5° in CoFe and 0.7° in Co per nanometer film thickness could be measured which are 30 times smaller than those previously measured at 7 eV. Band structure effects and layer roughness are responsible for these small precession angle values.
Measurements of frequency dependent ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) and spin pumping driven dc voltage (V_{dc}) are reported for amorphous films of Fe_{78}Ga_{13}B_{9} (FeGaB) alloy to address the phenomenon of self-induced inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE) in plain films of metallic ferromagnets. The V_{dc} signal, which is antisymmetric on field reversal, comprises of symmetric and asymmetric Lorentzians centered around the resonance field. Dominant role of thin film size effects is seen in setting the magnitude of static magnetization, V_{dc} and dynamics of magnetization precession in thinner …
Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in thin films enables extraordinary spin-wave phenomena: anti-Larmor precession, negative reflection and refraction, multi-reflection and multi-refraction
Dynamical strain generated upon excitation of a metallic film by a femtosecond laser pulse may become a versatile tool enabling control of magnetic state of thin films and nanostructures via inverse magnetostriction on a picosecond time scale. Here we explore two alternative approaches to manipulate magnetocrystalline anisotropy and excite magnetization precession in a low-symmetry film of a magnetic metallic alloy galfenol (Fe,Ga) either by injecting picosecond strain pulse into it from a substrate or by generating dynamical strain of complex temporal profile in the film directly. In the form…
Using a scattering matrix approach, the precession of the magnetization of a ferromagnet is shown to transfer spins into adjacent normal metal layers. This ``pumping'' of spins slows down the precession corresponding to an enhanced Gilbert damping factor in the Landau-Lifshitz equation. The damping is expressed in terms of the scattering matrix of the ferromagnet-normal metal interface, which is accessible to model and first-principles calculations. Our estimates for permalloy thin films explain the trends observed in recent experiments.
We study the magnetization dynamics of thin-film magnetic elements with in-plane magnetization subject to a spin-current flowing perpendicular to the film plane. We derive a reduced partial differential equation for the in-plane magnetization angle in a weakly damped regime. We then apply this model to study the experimentally relevant problem of switching of an elliptical element when the spin-polarization has a component perpendicular to the film plane, restricting the reduced model to a macrospin approximation. The macrospin ordinary differential equation is treated analytically as a weakly…
We demonstrate coherent control of time domain ferromagnetic resonance by all electrical excitation and detection. Using two ultrashort magnetic field steps with variable time delay we control the induction decay in yttrium iron garnet (YIG). By setting suitable delay times between the two steps the precession of the magnetization can either be enhanced or completely stopped. The method allows for a determination of the precession frequency within a few precession periods and with an accuracy much higher than can be achieved using fast fourier transformation. Moreover it holds the promise to m…
Bismuth substituted lutetium iron garnet (BLIG) films exhibit larger Faraday rotation, and have a higher Curie temperature than yttrium iron garnet. We have observed magnetic stripe domains and measured domain widths of 1.4 μμm using Fourier domain polarization microscopy, Faraday rotation experiments yield a coercive field of 5 Oe. These characterizations form the basis of micromagnetic simulations that allow us to estimate and compare spin wave excitations in BLIG films. We observed that these films support thermal magnons with a precessional frequency of 7 GHz with a line width of 400 MHz. …
We study transport in normal metals in an external magnetic field. This system exhibits an interplay between a transverse spin imbalance (spin Hall effect) caused by the spin-orbit interaction, a Hall effect via the Lorentz force, and spin precession due to the Zeeman effect. Diffusion equations for spin and charge flow are derived. The spin and charge accumulations are computed numerically in experimentally relevant thin film geometries. The out-of-plane spin Hall potential is suppressed when the Larmor frequency is larger than the spin-flip scattering rate. The in-plane spin Hall potential v…
The precessional magnetization dynamics of GaMnAs thin films are characterized by broadband network analyzer ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) in a coplanar geometry at cryogenic temperatures. The FMR frequencies are characterized as function of in-plane field angle and field amplitude. Using an extended Kittel model of the FMR dispersion the magnetic film parameters such as saturation magnetization and anisotropies are derived. The modification of the FMR behavior and of the magnetic parameters of the thin film upon annealing is analyzed.
The potential of a point charge in a thin semiconducting film with the thickness below the de Broglie wavelength of the free charge carriers is calculated with and without the screening.
We show that photoluminescence properties of PbS nanocrystal thin films are directly related to film morphology and nanocrystal density. In densely packed PbS nanocrystal films, low-temperature donor-to-acceptor energy transfer is mainly responsible for the photoluminescence spectra narrowing and shift toward longer wavelengths. At elevated temperatures, back energy transfer is proposed to be responsible for an unusual photoluminescence intensity temperature dependence. In thin films with a low PbS nanocrystal density, the energy transfer is suppressed, and the effect is dramatically reduced.
We propose a model for predicting the fluctuations of electron states in thin films as function of film thickness. The model was derived based on the assumption of the existence of potential barrier fluctuations on the film surface. Since the wave functions of electrons in the film is determined by the boundary conditions of potential on the film surface, potential fluctuations on the film surface implies the fluctuations of electron states in the film. The model was then extended to predict the effect of size on the lattice constant of thin films or nanoparticles. The derived equations can ex…
The ferromagnetic resonance frequencies are obtained for a thin ferromagnetic film with surface anisotropy for the cases when the external magnetic field is applied perpendicularly or parallel to the film surface, and for various combinations of boundary conditions on the film surface. It is shown that in the presence of surface anisotropy the ferromagnetic resonance frequency essentially depends both on the film thickness and on the value of the surface anisotropy constant. The results obtained provide a basis for the correct interpretation of experimental data obtained by means of broadband …
We study the electric dipole absorption in small metal particles and thin films in a longitudnal electric field. In diffusive approximation, we give both the phenomenological and microscopic derivations with the account for Thomas-Fermi screening and Drude relaxation.
We suggest the nondestructive method for determination of the dielectric constant of substrate-deposited thin films by capacitance measurement with two parallel wires placed on top of the film. The exact analytical formula for the capacitance of such system is derived. The functional dependence of the capacitance on dielectric constants of the film, substrate, and environment media and on the distance between the wires permits to measure the dielectric constant of thin films for the vast set of parameters where previously proposed approximate methods are less efficient.
Development of energy efficient techniques for generation of spin waves (magnons) is important for implementation of low-dissipation spin-wave-based logic circuits and memory elements. A promising approach to achieve this goal is based on the injection of short strain pulses into ferromagnetic films with a strong magnetoelastic coupling between spins and strains. Here we report micromagnetoelastic simulations of the magnetization and strain dynamics excited in Fe$_{81}$Ga$_{19}$ films by picosecond and nanosecond acoustic pulses created in a GaAs substrate by a transducer subjected to an optic…
We study spin conductivity of the surface states in a thin film of a topological insulator with Kubo formulas. Hybridization between the different sides of the film opens a gap at the Dirac point. We found that in the gapped region spin conductivity remains finite. In the gapless region near the band gap spin conductivity is enhanced. These findings make a thin film of a topological insulator as a promising material for spintronic applications.
Transient reflectivity measurements of thin films, ranging from 6 to 40 nm in thickness, of the topological insulator Bi2Se3 revealed a strong dependence of the carrier relaxation time on the film thickness. For thicker films the relaxation dynamics are similar to those of bulk Bi2Se3, where the contribution of the bulk insulating phase dominates over that of the surface metallic phase. The carrier relaxation time shortens with decreasing film thickness, reaching values comparable to those of noble metals. This effect may result from the hybridization of Dirac cone states at the opposite surfa…
The classical Heisenberg Hamiltonian was solved for oriented spinel thin and thick cubic ferrites. The dipole matrix of complicated cubic cell could be simplified into the form of dipole Matrix of simple cubic cells. This study was confined only to the highly oriented thin films of ferrite. The variation of total energy of Nickel ferrite thin films with angle and number of layers was investigated. Also the change of energy with stress induced anisotropy for Nickel ferrite films with N=5 and 1000 has been studied. Films with the magnetic moments ratio 1.86 can be easily oriented in 90 direction…
We present a universal nanomechanical sensing platform for the investigation of magnetostriction in thin films. It is based on a doubly-clamped silicon nitride nanobeam resonator covered with a thin magnetostrictive film. Changing the magnetization direction within the film plane by an applied magnetic field generates a magnetostrictive stress and thus changes the resonance frequency of the nanobeam. A measurement of the resulting resonance frequency shift, e.g. by optical interferometry, allows to quantitatively determine the magnetostriction constants of the thin film. We use this method to …
A novel approach to control the grain size of oxide thin film materials has been investigated. Perovskite BaTiO3 shows interesting grain structures when deposited on gold predeposited, (111)-oriented, singlecrystal SrTiO3 substrates. Solid oxide films grow epitaxially on patterned seed layers and show variations in grain size relative to the films deposited on SrTiO3 directly.
We explore a thermal mechanism of changing the anisotropy by femtosecond laser pulses in dielectric ferrimagnetic garnets by taking a low symmetry (YBiPrLu)3(FeGa)5O12 film grown on the (210)-oriented Gd3Ga5O12 substrate as a model media. We demonstrate by means of spectral magneto-optical pump-probe technique and phenomenological analysis, that the magnetization precession in such a film is triggered by laser-induced changes of the growth-induced magnetic anisotropy along with the well-known ultrafast inverse Faraday effect. The change of magnetic anisotropy is mediated by the lattice heating…
In this paper a detailed numerical study (in frames of the Slonczewski formalism) of magnetization oscillations driven by a spin-polarized current through a thin elliptical nanoelement is presented. We show that a sophisticated micromagnetic model, where a polycrystalline structure of a nanoelement is taken into account, can explain qualitatively all most important features of the magnetization oscillation spectra recently observed experimentally (S.I. Kiselev et al., Nature, vol. 425, p. 380 (2003), namely: existence of several equidistant spectral bands, sharp onset and abrupt disappearance …
Magnetization dynamics are strongly influenced by damping. An effective damping constant αeff is often determined experimentally from the spectral linewidth of the free induction decay of the magnetization after the system is excited to its non-equilibrium state. Such an αeff, however, reflects both intrinsic damping as well as inhomogeneous broadening. In this paper we compare measurements of the magnetization dynamics in ultrathin non-epitaxial films having perpendicular magnetic anisotropy using two different techniques, time-resolved magneto optical Kerr effect (TRMOKE) and hybrid optical-…
The magnetic domain structure of the multiferroic Bi1-xDyxFeO3 (BDFO) deposited on ZnO at the macroscopic level has been demonstrated in this paper. Magnetic properties are observed by saturated magnetic and ferroelectric hysteresis loops at room temperature. The coupling behaviour and magnetic transition are verified using Multimode Atomic Force Microscope by applying bias between sample and MFM tip. ZnO thin film of 300 nm was deposited by dielectric sputtering using a ZnO target on Si p-type conducting (.0001-0005 Ω cm) substrate. BDFO thin films of 300 nm were deposited on Si/ZnO using PLD…
Sol-gel spin coating technique was employed to synthesize CuO thin films at 1500 rpm, 2200 rpm and 2400 rpm for 30 seconds, and subsequently annealed at 150-550°C for 1 hour. Multi-layered CuO thin films with 3 and 5 layers were prepared. These thin films were characterized using XRD, FTIR and polarizing light microscopy. The XRD and FTIR analysis confirmed the crystallization of CuO phase in thin films annealed above 350 °C, and corresponding crystallite sizes were observed to be increasing with the annealing temperature. The Scherrer formula was applied for (111) and peaks of XRD patterns of…
We report on the observation of metallic behavior in thin films of oxygen-deficient SrTiO$_3$ - down to 9 unit cells - when coherently strained on (001) SrTiO$_3$ or DyScO$_3$-buffered (001) SrTiO$_3$ substrates. These films have carrier concentrations of up to 2$\times10^{22}$ cm$^{-3}$ and mobilities of up to 19,000 cm$^2$/V-s at 2 K. There exists a non-conducting layer in our SrTiO$_{3-δ}$ films that is larger in films with lower carrier concentrations. This non-conducting layer can be attributed to a surface depletion layer due to a Fermi level pinning potential. The depletion width, trans…
The electrical conductance of molecular beam epitaxial Bi on BaF2(111) was measured as a function of both film thickness (4-540 nm) and temperature (5-300 K). Unlike bulk Bi as a prototype semimetal, the Bi thin films up to 90 nm are found to be insulating in the interiors but metallic on the surfaces. This result has not only resolved unambiguously the long controversy about the existence of semimetal-semiconductor transition in Bi thin film but also provided a straightforward interpretation for the long-puzzled temperature dependence of the resistivity of Bi thin films, which in turn might s…
Mn doped GaAs thin films were grown using molecular beam epitaxy at high and low substrate temperatures. The elemental concentration depth profiles in the thin films were determined by using Auger electron spectroscopy combined with ion etching. The Mn concentration is higher near the surface and then decreases with depth for films grown at high substrate temperatures. The Mn concentration profile is much more uniform when films are grown using a low substrate temperature. What was unexpectedly found are high levels of oxygen in the low substrate temperature grown thin films.
We report pulsed laser deposition synthesis and characterization of polycrystalline Fe1-xCox Si thin films on Si (111). X-ray diffraction, transmission electron, and atomic force microscopies reveal films to be dense, very smooth, and single phase with a cubic B20 crystal structure. Ferromagnetism with significant magnetic hysteresis is found for all films including nominally pure FeSi films in contrast to the very weak paramagnetism of bulk FeSi. For Fe1-xCoxSi this signifies a change from helimagnetism in bulk, to ferromagnetism in thin films. These ferromagnetic thin films are promising as …
We study the recently introduced 'critically coupled' model of magnetic Skyrmions, generalising it to thin films with curved geometry. The model feels keenly the extrinsic geometry of the film in three-dimensional space. We find exact Skyrmion solutions on spherical, conical and cylindrical thin films. Axially symmetric solutions on cylindrical films are described by kinks tunnelling between 'vacua'. For the model defined on general compact thin films, we prove the existence of energy minimising multi-Skyrmion solutions and construct the (resolved) moduli space of these solutions.
We report the magnetic properties of yttrium iron garnet (YIG) thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition technique. The films were deposited on Si (100) substrates in the range of 15-50 nm thickness. Magnetic characterizations were investigated by ferromagnetic resonance spectra. Perpendicular magnetic easy axis was achieved up to 50 nm thickness. We observed that the perpendicular anisotropy values decreased by increasing the film thickness. The origin of the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) was attributed to the texture and the lattice distortion in the YIG thin films. We anticipate…
We have synthesized epitaxial Ba2IrO4 (BIO) thin-films on SrTiO3 (001) substrates by pulsed laser deposition and studied their electronic structure by dc-transport and optical spectroscopic experiments. We have observed that BIO thin-films are insulating but close to the metalinsulator transition boundary with significantly smaller transport and optical gap energies than its sister compound, Sr2IrO4. Moreover, BIO thin-films have both an enhanced electronic bandwidth and electronic-correlation energy. Our results suggest that BIO thin-films have great potential for realizing the interesting ph…
Surface-patterned ZnO thin films were fabricated by direct imprinting on ZnO sol and subsequent annealing process. The polymer-based ZnO sols were deposited on various substrates for the nanoimprint lithography and converted to surface-patterned ZnO gel films during the thermal curing nanoimprint process. Finally, crystalline ZnO films were obtained by subsequent annealing of the patterned ZnO gel films. The optical characterization indicates that the surface patterning of ZnO thin films can lead to an enhanced transmittance. Large-scale ZnO thin films with different patterns can be fabricated…
