We propose a model for predicting the fluctuations of electron states in thin films as function of film thickness. The model was derived based on the assumption of the existence of potential barrier fluctuations on the film surface. Since the wave functions of electrons in the film is determined by the boundary conditions of potential on the film surface, potential fluctuations on the film surface implies the fluctuations of electron states in the film. The model was then extended to predict the effect of size on the lattice constant of thin films or nanoparticles. The derived equations can explain fairly several experimental data.
Finite-thickness effects are analyzed theoretically for the plasma frequency and associated dielectric response function of plasmonic films formed by periodically aligned, infinitely thin, identical metallic cylinders. The plasma frequency of the system is shown to have the unidirectional square-root-of-momentum and quasilinear momentum spatial dispersion for the thick and ultrathin films, respectively. This spatial dispersion and the unidirectional dielectric response nonlocality associated with it can be adjusted not only by the film material composition but also by varying the film thicknes…
There is an ever increasing interest in the development of plasmonic 2D nanomaterials, with widespread applications in optoelectronics, high resolution microscopy, imaging and sensing, among others. With the current ability of ultrathin noble metal film deposition down to a few monolayers in thickness, there is a need for an analytical expression of the thickness dependent complex dielectric function for predicting optical properties for arbitrary thicknesses. The free and bound electron contributions to the dielectric function are dealt with independently, since their influences affect separa…
Electron transport is studied in surface oxidized single-crystal copper thin films with a thickness of up to 5.6 nm by applying density functional theory and density functional tight binding methods to determine electron transport properties within the ballistic regime. The variation of the electron transmission as a function of film thickness as well as the different contributions to the overall electron transmission as a function of depth into the the films is examined. Transmission at the oxidized copper film surfaces is found to be universally low. Films with thickness greater than 2.7 nm …
We report on a >100-fold enhancement of Raman responses from Bi2Se3 thin films if laser photon energy switches from 2.33 eV (532 nm) to 1.58 eV (785 nm), which is due to direct optical coupling to Dirac surface states (SS) at the resonance energy of ~1.5 eV (a thickness-independent enhancement) and due to nonlinearly excited Dirac plasmon (a thickness-dependent enhancement). Owing to the direct optical coupling, we observed an in-plane phonon mode of hexagonally arranged Se-atoms associated with a continuous network of Dirac SS. This mode revealed a Fano lineshape for films <15 nm thick, resul…
A systematic experimental and theoretical study about substrate induced molecular conformation in rubrene thin films by varying film thickness from sub-monolayer to multilayer, which currently attracts substantial attention with regard to its application in organic electronics, is performed. The clean polycrystalline Au and Ag were used as noble-metals, whereas, H passivated and SiO2 terminated Si (100) were used as dielectric substrates. Angle dependent near edge x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS) was employed to understand the molecular conformation whereas atomic force mi…
Interfacial electron-phonon coupling in ultrathin films has attracted much interest; it can give rise to novel effects and phenomena, including enhanced superconductivity. Here we report an observation of strong kinks in the energy dispersions of quantum well states in ultrathin Yb films grown on graphite. These kinks, arising from interfacial electron-phonon coupling, are most prominent for films with a preferred ("magic") thickness of 4 monolayers, which are strained and hole doped by the substrate. The energy position of the kinks agrees well with the optical phonon energy of graphite, and …
We propose a novel method for suppression of quasiparticle poisoning in Al Coulomb blockade devices. The method is based on creation of a proper energy gap profile along the device. In contrast to the previously used techniques, the energy gap is controlled by the film thickness. Our transport measurements confirm that the quasiparticle poisoning is suppressed and clear 2$e$ periodicity is observed only when the island is made much thinner than the leads. This result is consistent with the existing model and provides a simple method to suppress quasiparticle poisoning.
We study theoretically confinement related effects in the optical response of thin plasmonic films of controlled variable thickness. While being constant for relatively thick films, the plasma frequency is shown to acquire spatial dispersion typical of two-dimensional materials such as graphene, gradually shifting to the red with the film thickness reduction. The dissipative loss, while decreasing at any fixed frequency, gradually goes up at the plasma frequency as it shifts to the red with the film thickness reduced. These features offer a controllable way to tune spatial dispersion and relat…
We discuss the optical response peculiarities for ultrathin plasmonic films of finite lateral size. Due to their plasma frequency spatial dispersion caused by the spatial confinement of the electron motion, the film dielectric permittivity tensor is spatially dispersive as well and so nonlocal. Such a confinement induced nonlocality can result in peculiar magneto-optical effects. For example, the frequency dependence of the magnetic permeability of the film exhibits a sharp resonance structure shifting to the red as the film aspect ratio increases. The properly tuned ultrathin plasmonic films …
Thermal transport by phonons in films with thicknesses of less than 10 nm is investigated in a soft system (Lennard-Jones argon) and a stiff system (Tersoff silicon) using two-dimensional lattice dynamics calculations and the Boltzmann transport equation. This approach uses a unit cell that spans the film thickness, which removes approximations related to the finite cross-plane dimension required in typical three-dimensional-based approaches. Molecular dynamics simulations are performed to obtain finite-temperature structures for the lattice dynamics calculations and to predict thermal conduct…
Optical second harmonic generation (SHG) has been measured for the first time in reflection from the nanometer-thick films (6 to 40 nm) of the topological insulator Bi2Se3 using 1.51 eV (820 nm) Ti:Sapphire laser photons and revealed a strong dependence of the integral SHG intensity on the film thickness. The integral SHG intensity was determined by area integration of the SHG rotational anisotropy patterns measured for different input-output light polarization geometries. A ~100-fold enhancement of the integral SHG intensity with decreasing film thickness has been suggested to result from the…
When the thickness of the layer is smaller than the electrons mean free path, the morphology affects the conductivity directly based on the layer thickness. This issue provides basis in order to estimate the thickness of the layer by understanding the morphology and the value of the conductivity. This method is an inverse approach on thickness estimation and is applied to various samples. The comparison of the results with other thickness estimations shows good consistency. The benefits of this approach is that the only parameter that needs to be measured is the conductivity, which is quite tr…
Transient reflectivity measurements of thin films, ranging from 6 to 40 nm in thickness, of the topological insulator Bi2Se3 revealed a strong dependence of the carrier relaxation time on the film thickness. For thicker films the relaxation dynamics are similar to those of bulk Bi2Se3, where the contribution of the bulk insulating phase dominates over that of the surface metallic phase. The carrier relaxation time shortens with decreasing film thickness, reaching values comparable to those of noble metals. This effect may result from the hybridization of Dirac cone states at the opposite surfa…
The dependences of electrical conductivity of plasticized PVC films on mass fraction of plasticizer "A" and the film thickness are experimentally investigated. Non-monotonic dependence of conductivity on the concentration of plasticizer and strongly nonlinear dependence of the resistance of the film on its thickness are found. Possibility of construction of the models describing received results is shown and also discussed.
We present the results of electron delocalization in thin films of finite thickness at finite tem- parature induced by thickness of the film and temparature. The two dimensional results show temparature induced metal-insulator transition (MIT) obtaining both insulating and metallic so- lutions. The localization length in insulating regime and zero frequency conductivity in metallic regime are found to be as a function of temparature and disorder parameter. Similarly, in thin films of finite thickness, delocalization of electronic states takes place induced by temparature as well as film thickn…
We present a comparative investigation of the influence of crystallinity and film thickness on the acoustic and thermal properties of 2D layered PtSe2 thin films of varying thickness (0.6-24 nm) by combining a set of experimental techniques, namely, frequency domain thermo-reflectance, low-frequency Raman and pump-probe coherent phonon spectroscopy. We find a 35% reduction in the cross-plane thermal conductivity of polycrystalline films with thickness larger than 12 nm compared to the crystalline films of the same thickness due to phonon grain boundary scattering. Density functional theory cal…
Phase fluctuations in finite thickness layered superconducting films are studied theoretically. The model consists of a set of layers, coupled to each other via a gradient-like term in the phase-only action. It is shown that the effective phase stiffness of the whole system is proportional to its thickness (i.e. the number of individual layers). This result leads to a superconductor-insulator transition and an inverse dependence of $T_c$ on thickness,$T_c\sim d^{-1}$, both in accord with the experimental findings. The relevance to disordered thin films is discussed.
Terahertz time-domain conductivity measurements in 2 to 100 nm thick iron films resolve the femtosecond time delay between applied electric fields and resulting currents. This response time decreases for thinner metal films. The macroscopic response time depends on the mean and the variance of the distribution of microscopic momentum relaxation times of the conducting electrons. Comparing the recorded response times with DC-conductivities demonstrates increasing variance of the microscopic relaxation times with increasing film thickness. At least two electron species contribute to conduction i…
We report the observation of a Pt layer thickness dependence on the induced interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in ultra-thin Pt($d_{\text{Pt}}$)/CoFeB films. Taking advantage of the large spin-orbit coupling of the heavy metal, the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is quantified by Brillouin light scattering measurements of the frequency non-reciprocity of spin-waves in the ferromagnet. The magnitude of the induced Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya coupling is found to saturate to a value $0.45$ mJ$/$m${}^2$ for Pt thicknesses larger than $\sim 2$ nm. The experimental results are ex…
Within the context of superconducting gap engineering, Al-\alox-Al tunnel junctions have been used to study the variation in superconducting gap, $Δ$, with film thickness. Films of thickness 5, 7, 10 and 30 nm were used to form the small area superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) tunnel junctions. In agreement with previous measurements we have observed an increase in the superconducting energy gap of aluminium with a decrease in film thickness. In addition, we find grain size in small area films with thickness \textbf{$\geq$} 10 nm has no appreciable effect on energy gap. Finally, we …
Spectra of the differential tunneling conductivity for ultrathin lead films grown on Si(111)7x7 single crystals with a thickness from 9 to 50 monolayers have been studied by low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. The presence of local maxima of the tunneling conductivity is typical for such systems. The energies of maxima of the differential conductivity are determined by the spectrum of quantum-confined states of electrons in a metallic layer and, consequently, the local thickness of the layer. It has been shown that features of the microstructure of substrates, such …
Ultrathin FeSe films grown on SrTiO$_{3}$ substrates are a recent milestone in atomic material engineering due to their important role in understanding unconventional superconductivity in Fe-based materials. Using femtosecond time- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, we study phonon frequencies in ultrathin FeSe/SrTiO$_{3}$ films grown by molecular beam epitaxy. After optical excitation, we observe periodic modulations of the photoelectron spectrum as a function of pump-probe delay for 1 unit cell, 3 unit cell, and 60 unit cell thick FeSe films. The frequencies of the coherent inten…

We use real-time reflection high energy electron diffraction intensity oscillation to establish the Te-rich growth dynamics of topological insulator thin films of Bi2Te3 on Si(111) substrate by molecular beam epitaxy. In situ angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), scanning tunneling microscopy and ex situ transport measurements reveal that the as-grown Bi2Te3 films without any doping are an intrinsic topological insulator with its Fermi level intersecting only the metallic surface states. Experimentally, we find that the single-Dirac-cone surface state develops at a thickness of tw…
We report the epitaxial growth of PdTe$_2$ ultrathin films on topological insulator Bi$_2$Se$_3$. A prominent Moiré pattern was observed in STM measurements. The Moiré periodicity increases as film thickness decreases, indicating a lattice expansion of epitaxial PdTe$_2$ thin films with lower thicknesses. In addition, our simulations based on Moiré Metrology reveal uniaxial lattice strains at the edge of PdTe$_2$ domains, and anisotropic strain distributions throughout the Moiré supercell with a net change in lattice strain up to ~2.9%. Our DFT calculations show that this strain effect leads t…
An experimental study was carried out to investigate the existence of a critical layer thickness in nanolayer coextrusion, under which no continuous layer is observed. Polymer films containing thousands of layers of alternating polymers with individual layer thicknesses below 100 nm have been prepared by coextrusion through a series of layer multiplying elements. Different films composed of alternating layers of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and polystyrene (PS) were fabricated with the aim to reach individual layer thicknesses as small as possible, varying the number of layers, the mass co…
We studied flux pinning in exfoliated FeTe$_{0.6}$Se$_{0.4}$ thin-film devices with a thickness $d$ from 30 to 150 nm by measuring the critical current density $J_{\mathrm{c}}$. In bulk FeTe$_{0.6}$Se$_{0.4}$, the flux pinning has been discussed in the framework of weak collective pinning, while there is little knowledge on the pinning mechanism in the thin-film region. From the thickness $d$ dependence of $J_{\mathrm{c}}$ at a fixed magnetic field of 1 T, we found that the strong pinning is dominant below $d \approx 70$ nm, while the weak collective pinning becomes more important above $d \ap…
Thickness uniformity is regarded as an important parameter in designing thin film devices. However, some applications based on films with non-uniform thickness have recently emerged, such as gas sensors and optimized materials based on the gradual change of film composition. This work deals with superconducting Pb thin films with a thickness gradient prepared with the aid of a diffuse stencil mask. Atomic Force Microscopy and Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy show variations ranging from 90~nm to 154~nm. Quantitative magneto-optical images reveal interesting features during both the abrupt …
In quantum matters hosting electron-electron correlation and spin-orbit coupling, spatial inhomogeneities, arising from competing ground states, can be essential for determining and understanding topological properties. A prominent example is Hall anomalies observed in SrRuO3 films, which were interpreted in terms of either magnetic skyrmion-induced topological Hall effect (THE) or inhomogeneous anomalous Hall effect (AHE). To clarify this ambiguity, we systematically investigated the AHE of SrRuO3 ultrathin films with controllable inhomogeneities in film thickness (tSRO). By harnessing the st…
It is shown that for thin metallic films thickness of which does not exceed thickness of skin layer, the problem allows analytical solution. In the field of resonant frequencies the analysis of dependence of coefficients of transmission, reflection and absorbtion on an electromagnetic wave is carried out. Dependence on pitch angle, thickness of the layer and coefficient of specular reflection and on effective electron collision frequency is carried out. The formula for contactless determination (calculation) of a thickness of a film by observable resonant frequencies is deduced.
