In this note, we establish a local maximum principle along Ricci flow under scaling invariant curvature condition. This unifies the known preservation of nonnegativity results along Ricci flow with unbounded curvature. By combining with the Dirichlet heat kernel estimates, we also give a more direct proof of Hochard's localized version of a maximum principle given by R. Bamler, E. Cabezas-Rivas, and B. Wilking on the lower bound of curvature conditions.
We introduce the new notion of Bianchi-convex sets, a generalization of convex sets of algebraic curvature tensors inspired by the second Bianchi identity. It turns out that Hamilton's maximum principle for the Ricci flow can be generalized for Bianchi-convex sets.
We prove rigidity theorems for shrinking gradient Ricci solitons supporting the Heisenberg-Pauli-Weyl uncertainty principle with the sharp constant in $\mathbb{R}^n$. In addtion, we partially give analogous rigidity results of the Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequalities on shrinking Ricci solitons.
A graph is called Ricci-flat if its Ricci curvatures vanish on all edges, here the definition of Ricci curvature on graphs was given by Lin-Lu-Yau. The authors in arXiv:1301.0102 and arXiv:1802.02982 obtained a complete characterization for all Ricci-flat graphs with girth at least five. In this paper, we completely determined all Ricci-flat graphs with maximum degree at most 4.
Assuming local uniform bounds on the metric for a solution of the Chern-Ricci flow, we establish local Calabi and curvature estimates using the maximum principle.
In this thesis we give a review on Ricci flow, an overview on Poincare conjecture, maximum principle, Li-Yau-Perelman estimate, Two functional F and W of Perelman, Reduced volume and reduced length and k-non collapsing estimate
In this paper, we prove some rigidity results for both shrinking and expanding Ricci solitons. First, we prove that compact shrinking Ricci solitons are Einstein if we control the maximum value of the potential function. Then, we prove some rigidity results for non-compact gradient expanding and shrinking Ricci solitons with pinched Ricci and scalar curvatures, assuming an asymptotic condition on the scalar curvature at infinity.
It is shown that a self-dual neutral Einstein four-manifold of Petrov type III, admitting a two-dimensional null parallel distribution compatible with the orientation, cannot be compact or locally homogeneous, and its maximum possible degree of mobility is 3. Diaz-Ramos, Garcia-Rio and Vazquez-Lorenzo found a general coordinate form of such manifolds. The present paper also provides a modified version of that coordinate form, valid in a suitably defined generic case and, in a sense, "more canonical" than the usual formulation. Moreover, the local-isometry types of manifolds as above having the…
In this paper, we systematically study the heat kernel of the Ricci flows induced by Ricci shrinkers. We develop several estimates which are much sharper than their counterparts in general closed Ricci flows. Many classical results, including the optimal Logarithmic Sobolev constant estimate, the Sobolev constant estimate, the no-local-collapsing theorem, the pseudo-locality theorem and the strong maximum principle for curvature tensors, are essentially improved for Ricci flows induced by Ricci shrinkers. Our results provide many necessary tools to analyze short time singularities of the Ricci…
We consider the volume-normalized Ricci flow close to compact shrinking Ricci solitons. We show that if a compact Ricci soliton $(M,g)$ is a local maximum of Perelman's shrinker entropy, any normalized Ricci flow starting close to it exists for all time and converges towards a Ricci soliton. If $g$ is not a local maximum of the shrinker entropy, we show that there exists a nontrivial normalized Ricci flow emerging from it. These theorems are analogues of results in the Ricci-flat and in the Einstein case.
We obtain a local Sobolev constant estimate for integral Ricci curvature, which enables us to extend several important tools such as the maximal principle, the gradient estimate, the heat kernel estimate and the $L^2$ Hessian estimate to manifolds with integral Ricci lower bounds, without the non-collapsing conditions.
In this paper, by maximum principle and cutoff function, we investigate gradient estimates for positive solutions to two nonlinear parabolic equations under Ricci flow. The related Harnack inequalities are deduced. An result about positive solutions on closed manifolds under Ricci flow is abtained. As applications, gradient estimates and Harnack inequalities for positive solutions to the heat equation under Ricci flow are derived. These results in the paper can be regard as generalizing the gradient estimates of Li-Yau, J. Y. Li, Hamilton and Li-Xu to the Ricci flow. Our results also improve t…
We introduce a natural extension of the concept of gradient Ricci soliton: the Ricci almost soliton. We provide existence and rigidity results, we deduce a-priori curvature estimates and isolation phenomena, and we investigate some topological properties. A number of differential identities involving the relevant geometric quantities are derived. Some basic tools from the weighted manifold theory such as general weighted volume comparisons and maximum principles at infinity for diffusion operators are discussed.
We prove that a four-dimensional gradient shrinking Ricci soliton with $δW^{\pm}=0$ is either Einstein, or a finite quotient of $S^3\times\mathbb{R}$, $S^2\times\mathbb{R}^2$ or $\mathbb{R}^4$. We also prove that a four-dimensional cscK gradient Ricci soliton is either Kähler-Einstein, or a finite quotient of $M\times\mathbb{C}$, where $M$ is a Riemann surface. The main arguments are curvature decompositions, the Weitzenböck formula for half Weyl curvature, and the maximum principle.
Identifying any conformally round metric on the $2$-sphere with a unique cross section on the standard lightcone in the $3+1$-Minkowski spacetime, we gain a new perspective on $2d$-Ricci flow on topological spheres. It turns out that in this setting, Ricci flow is equivalent to a null mean curvature flow first studied by Roesch--Scheuer along null hypersurfaces. Exploiting this equivalence, we can translate well-known results from $2d$-Ricci flow first proven by Hamilton into a full classification of the singularity models for null mean curvature flow in the Minkowski lightcone. Conversely, we…
In this paper, we shall give a new upper diameter estimate for complete Riemannian manifolds in the case that the Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature has a positive lower bound and the norm of the potential function has an upper bound. Our diameter estimate improves previous ones obtained by Wei and Wylie (J. Differential Geom. 83, 377--405, 2009) and Limoncu (Math. Z. 271, 715--722, 2012). As an application, we shall give an upper diameter bound for compact Ricci solitons in terms of the maximum value of the scalar curvature. By using such a diameter bound, we shall provide some new sufficient condit…
In this note, we prove a uniform distance distortion estimate for Ricci flows with uniformly bounded scalar curvature, independent of the lower bound of the initial $μ$-entropy. Our basic principle tells that once correctly renormalized, the metric-measure quantities obey similar estimates as in the non-collapsing case; espeically, the lower bounds of the renormalized heat kernel, observed on a scale comparable to the initial diameter, matches with the lower bound of the renormalized volume ratio, giving the desired distance distortion estimate.
Let $g(t)$ be a complete solution to the Ricci flow on a noncompact manifold such that $g(0)$ is Kahler. We prove that if $|Rm(g(t))|_{g(t)}\le a/t$ for some $a>0$, then $g(t)$ is Kahler for $t>0$. We prove that there is a constant $ a(n)>0$ depending only on $n$ such that the following is true: Suppose $g(t)$ is a complete solution to the Kahler-Ricci flow on a noncompact $n$-dimensional complex manifold such that $g(0)$ has nonnegative holomorphic bisectional curvature and such that $|Rm(g(t))|_{g(t)}\le a(n)/t$, then $g(t)$ has nonnegative holomorphic bisectional curvature for $t>0$. These …
In this paper we obtain a splitting theorem for the symmetric diffusion operator $Δ_ϕ=Δ-\left<\nablaϕ,\nabla \right>$ and a non-constant $C^3$ function $f$ in a complete Riemannian manifold $M$, under the assumptions that the Ricci curvature associated with $Δ_ϕ$ satisfies ${\rm Ric}_ϕ(\nabla f,\nabla f)\ge 0$, that $|\nabla f|$ attains a maximum at $M$ and that $Δ_ϕ$ is non-decreasing along the orbits of $\nabla f$. The proof uses the general fact that a complete manifold $M$ with a non-constant smooth function $f$ with parallel gradient vector field must be a Riemannian product $M=N\times \m…
In this paper we show how techniques coming from stochastic analysis, such as stochastic completeness (in the form of the weak maximum principle at infinity), parabolicity and $L^p$-Liouville type results for the weighted Laplacian associated to the potential may be used to obtain triviality, rigidity results, and scalar curvature estimates for gradient Ricci solitons under $L^p$ conditions on the relevant quantities.
In this paper, we firstly establish an Interpolating curvature invariance between the well known nonnegative and 2-non-negative curvature invariant along the Ricci flow. Then a related strong maximum principle for the $(λ_1, λ_2)$-nonnegativity is also derived along Ricci flow. Based on these, finally we obtain a rigidity property of manifolds with $(λ_1,λ_2)$-nonnegative curvature operators.
We study closed, simply connected manifolds with positive $2^\mathrm{nd}$-intermediate Ricci curvature and large symmetry rank. In odd dimensions, we show that they are spheres. In even dimensions other than $6$, we show that they must have positive Euler characteristic. Under stronger assumptions on the symmetry rank, we show that such even dimensional manifolds must have trivial odd degree integral cohomology, and if the second Betti number is no more than $1$, they are either spheres or complex projective spaces. In the process, we establish new tools for studying isometric actions on close…
We prove uniform curvature estimates for homogeneous Ricci flows: For a solution defined on $[0,t]$ the norm of the curvature tensor at time $t$ is bounded by the maximum of $C(n)/t$ and $C(n) ( scal(g(t)) - scal(g(0)) )$. This is used to show that solutions with finite extinction time are Type I, immortal solutions are Type III and ancient solutions are Type I, where all the constants involved depend only on the dimension $n$. A further consequence is that a non-collapsed homogeneous ancient solution on a compact homogeneous space emerges from a unique Einstein metric on the same space. The a…
In this short note, we observe that the Bamler-Kleiner proof of uniqueness and stability for 3-dimensional Ricci flow through singularities generalizes to singular Ricci flows in higher dimensions that satisfy an analogous canonical neighborhood property. In particular, this gives a canonical evolution through singularities for manifolds with positive isotropic curvature. The new ingredients we use are the recent classification of higher dimensional $κ$-solutions by Brendle, Daskalopoulos, Naff and Sesum, and the maximum principle for the linearized Ricci-DeTurck flow on locally conformally fl…
In this paper, we investigate the behavior of the normalized Ricci flow on asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds. We show that the normalized Ricci flow exists globally and converges to an Einstein metric when starting from a non-degenerate and sufficiently Ricci pinched metric. More importantly we use maximum principles to establish the regularity of conformal compactness along the normalized Ricci flow including that of the limit metric at time infinity. Therefore we are able to recover the existence results in \cite{GL} \cite{Lee} \cite{Bi} of conformally compact Einstein metrics with conform…
We derive a family of weighted scalar curvature monotonicity formulas for generalized Ricci flow, involving an auxiliary dilaton field evolving by a certain reaction-diffusion equation motivated by renormalization group flow. These scalar curvature monotonicities are dual to a new family of Perelman-type energy and entropy monotonicity formulas by coupling to a solution of the associated weighted conjugate heat equation. In the setting of Ricci flow, we further obtain a new family of convex Nash entropies and pseudolocality principles.
The aim of this paper is to prove some classification results for generic shrinking Ricci solitons. In particular, we show that every three dimensional generic shrinking Ricci soliton is given by quotients of either $\mathds{S}^3$, $\erre\times\mathds{S}^2$ or $\erre^3$, under some very weak conditions on the vector field $X$ generating the soliton structure. In doing so we introduce analytical tools that could be useful in other settings; for instance we prove that the Omori-Yau maximum principle holds for the $X$-Laplacian on every generic Ricci soliton, without any assumption on $X$.
Discrete time random walks on a finite set naturally translate via a one-to-one correspondence to discrete Laplace operators. Typically, Ollivier curvature has been investigated via random walks. We first extend the definition of Ollivier curvature to general weighted graphs and then give a strikingly simple representation of Ollivier curvature using the graph Laplacian. Using the Laplacian as a generator of a continuous time Markov chain, we connect Ollivier curvature with the heat equation which is strongly related to continuous time random walks. In particular, we prove that a lower bound o…
In this paper, we establish a generalized maximum principle for pseudo-Hermitian manifolds. As corollaries, Omori-Yau type maximum principles for pseudo-Hermitian manifolds are deduced. Moreover, we prove that the stochastic completeness for the heat semigroup generated by the sub-Laplacian is equivalent to the validity of a weak form of the generalized maximum principles. Finally, we give some applications of these generalized maximum principles.
A Riemannian manifold $M$ is said to satisfy the Omori-Yau maximum principle if for any $C^2$ bounded function $g:M\to \Bbb R$ there is a sequence $x_n\in M$, such that $\lim_{n\to \infty}g(x_n)=\sup_M g$, $ \lim_{n\to \infty}|\nabla g(x_n)|=0$ and $\limsup_{n\to \infty}Δg(x_n)\leq 0$. It is shown that if the Ricci curvature does not approach $-\infty $ too fast the manifold satisfies the Omori-Yau maximum principle. This improves earlier necessary conditions. The given condition is quite optimal.
Based on ideas of L. Alías, D. Impera and M. Rigoli developed in "Hypersurfaces of constant higher order mean curvature in warped products", we develope a fairly general weak/Omori-Yau maximum principle for trace operators. We apply this version of maximum principle to generalize several higher order mean curvature estimates and to give an extension of Alias-Impera-Rigoli Slice Theorem
Based on works by Hopf, Weinberger, Hamilton and Evans, we state and prove the strong elliptic maximum principle for smooth sections in vector bundles over Riemannian manifolds and give some applications in Differential Geometry. Moreover, we use this maximum principle to obtain various rigidity theorems and Bernstein type theorems in higher codimension for minimal maps between Riemannian manifolds.
Ricci curvature was proposed by Ollivier in a general framework of metric measure spaces, and it has been studied extensively in the context of graphs in recent years. In this paper we prove upper bounds for Ollivier's Ricci curvature for bipartite graphs and for the graphs with girth at least 5. We also prove a general lower bound on the Ricci curvature in terms of the size of the maximum matching in an appropriate subgraph. As a consequence, we characterize the Ricci-flat graphs of girth 5. Moreover, using our general lower bound and the Birkhoff-von Neumann theorem, we give a necessary and …
The principle of convergence stability for geometric flows is the combination of the continuous dependence of the flow on initial conditions, with the stability of fixed points. It implies that if the flow from an initial state $g_0$ exists for all time and converges to a stable fixed point, then the flows of solutions that start near $g_0$ also converge to fixed points. We show this in the case of the Ricci flow, carefully proving the continuous dependence on initial conditions. Symmetry assumptions on initial geometries are often made to simplify geometric flow equations. As an application o…
On compact surfaces with or without boundary, Osgood, Phillips and Sarnak proved that the maximum of the determinant of the Laplacian within a conformal class of metrics with fixed area occurs at a metric of constant curvature and, for negative Euler characteristic, exhibited a flow from a given metric to a constant curvature metric along which the determinant increases. The aim of this paper is to perform a similar analysis for the determinant of the Laplacian on a non-compact surface whose ends are asymptotic to hyperbolic funnels or cusps. In that context, we show that the Ricci flow conver…
