We report on measurements of the hyperfine $A, B$ and $C$-constants of the $3d4s^2 ~^2D_{5/2}$ and $3d4s^2 ~^2D_{3/2}$ atomic states in $^{45}$Sc. High-precision atomic calculations of the hyperfine fields of these states and second-order corrections are performed, and are used to extract $C_{5/2}=-0.06(6)$ kHz and $C_{3/2}=+0.04(3)$ kHz from the data. These results are one order of magnitude more precise than the available literature. From the combined analysis of both atomic states, we infer the nuclear magnetic octupole moment $Ω= -0.07(53) μ_N b$, including experimental and atomic structure-related uncertainties. With a single valence proton outside of a magic calcium core, scandium is ideally suited to test a variety of nuclear models, and to investigate in-depth the many intriguing nuclear structure phenomena observed within the neighboring isotopes of calcium. We perform nuclear shell-model calculations of $Ω$, and furthermore explore the use of Density Functional Theory for evaluating $Ω$. From this, mutually consistent theoretical values of $Ω$ are obtained, which are in agreement with the experimental value. This confirms atomic structure calculations possess the accuracy and precision required for magnetic octupole moment measurements, and shows that modern nuclear theory is capable of providing meaningful insight into this largely unexplored observable.
$\textit{Background}$: Nuclear fusion has been shown to be a perfect probe to study the different nuclear shapes. However, the possibility of testing octupole deformation of a nucleus with this tool has not been fully explored yet. The presence of a stactic octupole deformation in nuclei will enhanced a possible permanent electric dipole moment, leading to a possible demonstration of parity violation. $\textit{Purpose}$: To check whether static octupole deformation or octupole vibration in fusion give qualitatively different results so that both situations can be experimentally disentangled. $…

Reflection asymmetric, octupole shapes in nuclei are a prominent aspect of nuclear structure, and have been recurrently studied over the decades. Recent experiments using radioactive-ion beams have provided evidence for stable octupole shapes. A variety of nuclear models have been employed for the related theoretical analyses. We review recent studies on the nuclear octupole shapes and collective excitations within the interacting boson model. A special focus is placed on the microscopic formulation of this model by using the mean-field method that is based on the framework of nuclear density …
We present a generator-coordinate calculation, based on a relativistic energy-density functional, of the low-lying spectra in the isotopes $^{150}$Nd and $^{150}$Sm and of the nuclear matrix element that governs the neutrinoless double-beta decay of the first isotope to the second. We carefully examine the impact of octupole correlations on both nuclear structure and the double-beta decay matrix element. Octupole correlations turn out to reduce quadrupole collectivity in both nuclei. Shape fluctuations, however, dilute the effects of octupole deformation on the double-beta decay matrix element…
We report the first beyond-mean-field study of low-lying parity-doublet states in 224Ra by extending the multireference relativistic energy density functional method to include dynamical correlations related to symmetry restoration and quadrupole-octupole shape fluctuation with a generator coordinate method combined with parity, particle-number, and angular-momentum projections. We clarify full microscopically that the origin of spin-dependent parity splitting in low-spin states is related to the octupole shape stabilization of positive-parity states, the dominated shapes of which drift gradua…
The physical conditions for the emergence of the extremely low-lying nuclear isomer $^{229m}$Th at approximately 8 eV are investigated in the framework of our recently proposed nuclear structure model. Our theoretical approach explains the $^{229m}$Th-isomer phenomenon as the result of a very fine interplay between collective quadrupole-octupole and single-particle dynamics in the nucleus. We find that the isomeric state can only appear in a rather limited model space of quadrupole-octupole deformations in the single-particle potential, with the octupole deformation being of a crucial importan…
The hyperfine constants of the $^3$P$^{\circ}_2$ state in neutral Yb have been measured using three different dipole transitions. This state was recently shown to have a comparatively large hyperfine magnetic octupole splitting, and thus a puzzlingly large magnetic octupole moment. The measurement is performed using collinear laser spectroscopy on a fast atomic beam, which provides a straightforward route to probing long-lived metastable atomic states with high resolution. From the combined analysis of all three lines we find no significant evidence for a non-zero octupole moment in $^{173}$Yb…
A "breathing'' octupole $^{208}$Pb nucleus: resolving the elliptical-to-triangular azimuthal anisotropy puzzle in ultracentral relativistic heavy ion collisions
The observed baryon asymmetry of the universe (BAU) cannot be explained by the known sources of charge-parity (CP)-violation in the Standard Model (SM). A non-zero permanent electric-dipole-moment (EDM) for fundamental particles, nuclei or atoms, violates CP. Measuring a non-zero EDM allows us to gain a handle on additional sources of CP-violation required to explain the observed BAU. The EDM of an atom with an octupole and quadrupole deformed nucleus is enhanced. Therefore, the search for such atoms has become important in the quest to measure an EDM. Viability of EDM searches in $^{225}$Ra a…
It is now well established that atomic nuclei composed of certain combinations of protons and neutrons can adopt reflection-asymmetric, or octupole-deformed, shapes at low excitation energy. These nuclei show promise in the search for a permanent atomic electric dipole moment, the existence of which has implications for physics beyond the Standard Model. Theoretical studies have suggested that certain isotopes of thorium may have the largest octupole deformation. However, due to experimental challenges, the extent of the octupole collectivity in the low-energy states in these thorium nuclei ha…
Mid-heavy nuclei offer unique opportunities to study the collective and single-particle aspects of nuclear structure. This mass regime is a dynamic area where protons and neutrons generally occupy different orbitals, giving rise to complex structures with a wide variety of shapes, shape evolution and shape coexistence. To that end, measurements of nuclear lifetimes and electromagnetic moments ($μ$,$Q$) can be invaluable. Recent experimental activities of the NuSTRAP group in Athens have focused on $γ$-spectroscopy studies employing the RoSPHERE array in Magurele, Romania. In recent studies [1,…

Impacts of nuclear structure on multiplicity ($N_{ch}$) and anisotropic flows ($v_{2}$ and $v_{3}$) in the isobaric collisions of $^{96}_{44}$Ru + $^{96}_{44}$Ru and $^{96}_{40}$Zr + $^{96}_{40}$Zr at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 7.7, 27, 62.4 and 200 GeV are investigated by using the string melting version of A MultiPhase Transport (AMPT) model. In comparison with the experimental data released recently by the STAR collaboration, it is found that the impact of quadrupole deformation $β_{2}$ on the $v_{2}$ difference is mainly manifested in the most central collisions, while the octupole deformation $β_{…
Nuclear forces and the nuclear many-body problem have been some of Gerry Brown's main topics in his so productive life as a theoretical physicist. In this talk, I outline how Gerry's work laid the foundations of the modern theory of nuclear forces and ab initio calculations of atomic nuclei. I also present some recent developments obtained in the framework of nuclear lattice simulations.
The accuracy of atomic theory calculations limits the extraction of nuclear charge radii from isotope shift measurements of odd-proton nuclei. For Na isotopes, though precise spectroscopic measurements have existed since more than half a century, calculations by different methods offer a wide range of values. Here, we present accurate atomic calculations to reliably extract the Na charge radii. By combining experimental matter radii with nuclear coupled-cluster calculations based on nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon forces, we constrain the parameters obtained from the atomic calculations. The…
The radioactive radium-225 ($^{225}$Ra) atom is a favorable case to search for a permanent electric dipole moment (EDM). Due to its strong nuclear octupole deformation and large atomic mass, $^{225}$Ra is particularly sensitive to interactions in the nuclear medium that violate both time-reversal symmetry and parity. We have developed a cold-atom technique to study the spin precession of $^{225}$Ra atoms held in an optical dipole trap, and demonstrated the principle of this method by completing the first measurement of its atomic EDM, reaching an upper limit of $|$$d$($^{225}$Ra)$|$ $<$ $5.0\!…
There is a large body of evidence that atomic nuclei can undergo octupole distortion and assume the shape of a pear. This phenomenon is important for measurements of electric-dipole moments of atoms, which would indicate CP violation and hence probe physics beyond the standard model of particle physics. Isotopes of both radon and radium have been identified as candidates for such measurements. Here, we have observed the low-lying quantum states in $^{224}$Rn and $^{226}$Rn by accelerating beams of these radioactive nuclei. We report here additional states not assigned in our 2019 publication. …
