The hyperfine constants of the $^3$P$^{\circ}_2$ state in neutral Yb have been measured using three different dipole transitions. This state was recently shown to have a comparatively large hyperfine magnetic octupole splitting, and thus a puzzlingly large magnetic octupole moment. The measurement is performed using collinear laser spectroscopy on a fast atomic beam, which provides a straightforward route to probing long-lived metastable atomic states with high resolution. From the combined analysis of all three lines we find no significant evidence for a non-zero octupole moment in $^{173}$Yb.
Collinear laser spectroscopy of fast atomic beams has been established as one of the main tools to perform precision experiments with atoms containing short-lived nuclei. Although highly sensitive, the spectral resolution of these techniques is typically limited to several MHz. Here, we study the use of transient interference phenomena to potentially improve the experimental resolution. Previous attempts to implement Ramsey-type measurements with fast beams were limited by the lack of understanding of the observed line shapes. By using a simple model, we provide a satisfactory description of t…
A high-voltage divider with accuracy at the ppm level and collinear laser spectroscopy were used to calibrate the highvoltage installation at the radioactive ion beam facility ISOLDE at CERN. The accurate knowledge of this voltage is particularly important for collinear laser spectroscopy measurements. Beam velocity measurements using frequencycomb based collinear laser spectroscopy agree with the new calibration. Applying this, one obtains consistent results for isotope shifts of stable magnesium isotopes measured using collinear spectroscopy and laser spectroscopy on laser-cooled ions in a t…
We report on a novel detection system for collinear laser spectroscopy which provides an almost $4π$ solid angle for fluorescence photon detection by employing curved surface mirrors. Additional parabolic angular filters offer passive stray light suppression and can be configured to match the experimental conditions. The mirror surfaces have an excellent reflectivity over a broad band of wavelengths in the optical spectrum and can be substituted to expand the wavelength acceptance range even further. Experiments with this system were performed at two collinear laser spectroscopy setups, includ…

Long-lived isotopes of plutonium were studied using two complementary techniques, high-resolution resonance ionisation spectroscopy (HR-RIS) and collinear laser spectroscopy (CLS). Isotope shifts have been measured on the $5f^67s^2\ ^7F_0 \rightarrow 5f^56d^27s\ (J=1)$ and $5f^67s^2\ ^7F_1 \rightarrow 5f^67s7p\ (J=2)$ atomic transitions using the HR-RIS method and the hyperfine factors have been extracted for the odd mass nuclei $^{239,241}$Pu. Collinear laser spectroscopy was performed on the $5f^67s\ ^8F_{1/2} \rightarrow J=1/2\; (27523.61\text{cm}^{-1})$ ionic transition with the hyperfine …
Hyperfine structure $A$ and $B$ factors of the atomic $5s\,5p\,\; ^3\rm{P}_2 \rightarrow 5s\,6s\,\; ^3\rm{S}_1$ transition are determined from collinear laser spectroscopy data of $^{107-123}$Cd and $^{111m-123m}$Cd. Nuclear magnetic moments and electric quadrupole moments are extracted using reference dipole moments and calculated electric field gradients, respectively. The hyperfine structure anomaly for isotopes with $s_{1/2}$ and $d_{5/2}$ nuclear ground states and isomeric $h_{11/2}$ states is evaluated and a linear relationship is observed for all nuclear states except $s_{1/2}$. This co…
We demonstrate the first application of a liquid-metal ion source for collinear laser spectroscopy in proof-of-principle measurements on naturally abundant In$^+$. The superior beam quality, i.e., the actively stabilized current and energy of a beam with very low transverse emittance, allowed us to perform precision spectroscopy on the $5s^2\;^1\mathrm{S}_0 \rightarrow 5s5p\;^3\mathrm{P}_1$ intercombination transition in $^{115}$In$^+$, which is to our knowledge the slowest transition measured with collinear fluorescence laser spectroscopy so far. By applying collinear and anticollinear spectr…
An approach to determine the kinetic beam energy at the $10^{-5}$ level is presented, which corresponds to an improvement by more than one order of magnitude compared to conventional methods. Particularly, collinear fluorescence and resonance ionization spectroscopy measurements on rare isotope beams, where the beam energy is a major contribution to the uncertainty, can benefit from this method. The approach is based on collinear spectroscopy and requires no special equipment besides a wavelength meter, which is commonly available. Its advent is demonstrated in a proof-of-principle experiment …
The velocity distribution of a hot ionic beam can be filtered with a narrow stimulated Raman process to prepare a colder subensemble, as substantiated in this theoretical analysis. Using two counter-propagating, far-detuned lasers, we can define a $π$-pulse for the resonant velocity to transfer atoms within the linewidth of the Raman resonance between the ground-states of a $Λ$-system. Spontaneous emission from the two single-photon resonances, as well as the ground-state decoherence induced by laser noise, diminishes the efficiency of the filter. From a comprehensive master equation, we obtai…
Absolute transition frequencies of the $2s\,^2{\rm{S}}_{1/2}$ $\rightarrow$ $2p\,^2{\rm{P}}_{1/2,3/2}$ transitions in Be$^+$ were measured with a frequency comb in stable and short-lived isotopes at ISOLDE (CERN) using collinear laser spectroscopy. Quasi-simultaneous measurements in copropagating and counterpropagating geometry were performed to become independent from acceleration voltage determinations for Doppler-shift corrections of the fast ion beam. Isotope shifts and fine structure splittings were obtained from the absolute transition frequencies with accuracies better than 1\,MHz and l…

We examine the influence of probe laser intensity fluctuations on hyper-Ramsey spectroscopy. We assume, as is appropriate for relevant cases of interest, that the probe laser intensity $I$ determines both the Rabi frequency $(\propto\sqrt{I})$ and the frequency shift to the atomic transition $(\propto I)$ during probe laser interactions with the atom. The spectroscopic signal depends on these two quantities that co-vary with fluctuations in the probe laser intensity. Introducing a simple model for the fluctuations, we find that the signature robustness of the hyper-Ramsey method can be comprom…
Efficient Separation of the Isomeric State $^{26\text{m}}\text{Al}$ from the Intense Ground State Background via Sequential Optical Pumping in Collinear Laser Spectroscopy
We perform high resolution spectroscopy on $^{176}$Lu$^+$ including the $^1S_0\leftrightarrow{^3}D_1$ and $^1S_0\leftrightarrow{^3}D_2$ clock transitions. Hyperfine structures and optical frequencies relative to the $^1S_0$ ground state of four low lying excited states are given to a few tens of kHz resolution. This covers the most relevant transitions involved in clock operation with this isotope. Additionally, measurements of the $^3D_2$ hyperfine structure may provide access to higher order nuclear moments, specifically the magnetic octupole and electric hexadecapole moments.
We present two methods for studying reactive collisions between two atomic or molecular species: a collinear merged-beam method, in which two gas pulses from a single supersonic beam source are coalesced, and an intrabeam-scattering technique, in which a single gas pulse is used. Both approaches, which rely on the laser cooling and deceleration of a laser-coolable species inside a Zeeman slower, can be used for a wide range of scattering studies. Possible experimental implementations of the proposed methods are outlined for autoionizing collisions between helium atoms in the metastable $2^3\ma…
The electric dipole-forbidden, quadrupole 6S1/2 <-> 5D3/2 transition in Ba+ near 2051 nm, with a natural linewidth of 13 mHz, is attractive for potential observation of parity non-conservation, and also as a clock transition for a barium ion optical frequency standard. This transition also offers a direct means of populating the metastable 5D3/2 state to measure the nuclear magnetic octupole moment in the odd barium isotopes. Light from a diode-pumped, solid state Tm,Ho:YLF laser operating at 2051 nm is used to coherently drive this transition between resolved Zeeman levels in a single trapped…
This work reports on the application of a novel electric field-ionization setup for high-resolution laser spectroscopy measurements on bunched fast atomic beams in a collinear geometry. In combination with multi-step resonant excitation to Rydberg states using pulsed lasers, the field ionization technique demonstrates increased sensitivity for isotope separation and measurement of atomic parameters over non-resonant laser ionization methods. The setup was tested at the Collinear Resonance Ionization Spectroscopy experiment at ISOLDE-CERN to perform high-resolution measurements of transitions i…
The neutron-rich 6He and 8He isotopes exhibit an exotic nuclear structure that consists of a tightly bound 4He-like core with additional neutrons orbiting at a relatively large distance, forming a halo. Recent experimental efforts have succeeded in laser trapping and cooling these short-lived, rare helium atoms, and have measured the atomic isotope shifts along the 4He-6He-8He chain by performing laser spectroscopy on individual trapped atoms. Meanwhile, the few-electron atomic structure theory, including relativistic and QED corrections, has reached a comparable degree of accuracy in the calc…
A new beamline for Resonant Excitation of Beams with Electromagnetic fields and Lasers (REBEL) and Stopping and Trapping of Radioactive Isotopes for Precision Experiments (STRIPE)
We report on experimentally observed addition, subtraction and cancellation of orbital angular momentum (OAM) in the process of parametric four-wave mixing that results in frequency up- and down-converted emission in Rb vapour. Specific features of OAM transfer from resonant laser fields with different optical topological charges to the spatially and temporally coherent blue light have been considered. We have observed the conservation of OAM in nonlinear wave mixing in a wide range of experimental conditions including a non-collinear geometry of the applied laser beams and furthermore that th…
Background: Octupole-deformed nuclei, such as that of $^{225}$Ra, are expected to amplify observable atomic electric dipole moments (EDMs) that arise from time-reversal and parity-violating interactions in the nuclear medium. In 2015, we reported the first "proof-of-principle" measurement of the $^{225}$Ra atomic EDM. Purpose: This work reports on the first of several experimental upgrades to improve the statistical sensitivity of our $^{225}$Ra EDM measurements by orders of magnitude and evaluates systematic effects that contribute to current and future levels of experimental sensitivity. Met…
Unique spectroscopic possibilities open up if a laser beam interacts with relativistic lithium-like ions stored in the heavy ion ring accelerator SIS300 at the future Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research FAIR in Darmstadt, Germany. At a relativistic factor gamma = 36 the 2P 1/2 level can be excited from the 2S 1/2 ground state for any element with frequency doubled dye-lasers in collinear geometry. Precise transition energy measurements can be performed if the fluorescence photons, boosted in forward direction into the X-ray region, are energetically analyzed with a single crystal monochro…

Collinear double-pulse seeding of the High-Gain Harmonic Generation (HGHG) process in a free-electron laser (FEL) is a promising approach to facilitate various coherent nonlinear spectroscopy schemes in the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) spectral range. However, in collinear arrangements using a single nonlinear medium, temporally overlapping seed pulses may introduce nonlinear mixing signals that compromise the experiment at short time delays. Here, we investigate these effects in detail by extending the analysis described in a recent publication (Wituschek et al., Nat. Commun., 11, 883, 2020). Hi…
The classical or quantum nature of optical spectroscopy signals is a topic that has attracted great attention recently. Spectroscopic techniques have been classified as quantum or classical depending on the light-source used in their implementations. In this way, experiments performed with quantum light---such as entangled photon pairs---have been labeled as quantum spectroscopies, whereas those performed with coherent laser pulses are generally referred to as classical ones. In this work, we highlight the fact that typical laser-spectroscopy signals should sometimes be deemed quantum too, as …
